Just a quick fyi that this episode was recorded in a pre-Covid world, so if you notice the sound quality is extra great, and we make reference to some stuff that is currently not applicable, that’s why.In this episode I get to talk to Emily Readman about how to put your work out into the world. She has some great insights you can definitely apply to your field, so if you aren’t a writer, I think it’s still worth a listen.Em is a writer, student and playwright, and all around charismatic creator who runs an Instagram which balances aesthetic with substance. I love the mini Zine she recently published on her profile about how white allies can continue to support the BLM movement and continue ally work.Pre-order the third issue of Good Material Mag here to see her yes on a page.Keep well,PaulaEPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Here is a quick list of some of Em’s biggest gems:- Read the publication or journal, read and support their stuff and do your research!- Identify places which are appropriate for you to submit. Find your kinda people, spaces where your values and experiences are reflected, respected, and even sought after.- See the value in your work but don’t take it too seriously.- Always be polite. Editors are people too!- Observe pitching etiquette and follow the style guide! Sure, you might think it cramps your style or somehow twists the meaning or integrity of your work. Here’s some tough love: get over it. Do not take your work so seriously. That could well result in your sending something which feels like a middle finger to the receiver.- In the same vein: submit in the way they want you to. It makes their job easier, and they may well decide that anyone who can’t be bothered to do the thing they ask will not be considered at all- Highball what you ask for, what’s the worst that could happen?- Exposure work can be useful, especially when you have a small portfolio......Rejection. Honestly I think we could do any entire episode on rejection, because it is something that will taste just as acrid no matter how old, talented, experienced or confident you are. Rejection will never not sting; the only thing to do is learn to manage it better so that we can grow further and faster. Here’s are two articles on just that from the Harvard Business Review and O Magazine......Having the confidence to submit is sometimes tricky. Statistically there WILL be people who resonate with what you write. There WILL be people who are looking for exactly what you are creating. But of course, it’s one thing to say that and another thing to believe it.Confidence and creativity have an interesting relationship dynamic, here’s a TED talk on how you can build your creative confidence by David Kelley......The phrase I was trying to remember is apparently from Kevin Durant, and it goes “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.”And that’s the thing about a good work ethic: it will carry you much farther in life than any fickle inspiration will. And if you match it with a lethal combination of self-care and discipline, you will be unstoppable......Cool zines and organisations we mentioned:Gulp is a Brisbane based, genre-based magVoice Works Is a national literary journalVis Ink, AKA Visible Ink is a Brisbane City Council funded youth hub which enables young creatives to access materials, tools and a community which promotes growth in the arts sector at a grass roots level.Good Material Mag is a Brisbane based mag.....You can find Em’s work here:Pre-order the third issue of Good Material Mag here so you can read her work! The aftermath of the most recent Australian Bushfires for Kos magazineOn the desire to edit herself for Glass MagazineTalking about domestic violence for Glass MagazineAn interview with Em for Good Material MagAnd here she is talking about Glass magazine, which is QUT’s student run magazine. Wrote Surfing the Black Wave [3:44] Dan tells us about his clients and the type of work he does. “We started with two types of clients. We started in healthcare and pizza. First two clients, Henry Ford health system, and Domino’s pizza.” “Our experience is really in taking chain based organizations, local organizations that are widespread and building that local connection in the local community for those organizations.” Gives example of Chick-Fil-A. When they work with a chain like this, the focus is more on local communities and local engagement. Daddy-daughter date nights, military appreciation nights, etc. [4:56] Dan continues: “In doing that over the years, what we’ve learned is that connection happens in the community, connections happens through values… That’s great to have a pizza on sale, a $5 hot and ready, but you can beat that with a $7 pizza that cares.” They ran a campaign for Hungry Howies that donated proceeds to breast cancer research. They experienced a 23% increase of sales that month, and they gained a quarter of a million Facebook fans and followers. “We saw how that local connectivity is about connecting to the values that people care about there and then bringing that together for maybe a promotion, maybe not… it’s more important that you have that values connection. [5:53] Brad reflects on first meeting Dan years ago. He recalls that Dan had a very clear vision that had nothing to do with advertising. Brad asks Dan what that “Why” core value system looks like these days. [7:22] Dan responds: “Many of us started with writing or artistic or musical skills, and it kind of drove us into this industry, which gave us a way to compensate those skills… for me it went back to when I was a kid. I was sitting on the couch watching tv… mom walks into the room and says turn that off, that’s bad for you. Go out and do something good for you. And it was that moment… it was this though, Why does it have to be bad for me? Why does this content, this entertainment, this advertising have to be bad for me? Maybe I can make that change.” [8:10] He recalls Nike’s “Just Do It” campaign impacting him strongly. As a runner, he found himself truly inspired by the commercials that he’d seen. “It inspired me to be a better runner, to be a better person, overcome the pain in my life, and just take on the challenges… why can’t advertising always do that type of thing?” [8:35] Dan: “So we started building a model around that… we call it Better Brands for a Better Human Condition. So we put everything we do through that filter: Is what we’re doing building a better brand for a better human condition?” “As a team, we started pull all-nighters, pretty much the slave shifts. We’ve all done it in this business… one of my staff members said ‘How is this a better brand for a better human condition?’” Helping your clients be the best they can be oftentimes comes at the expense of your internal team. Dan talks about how traditionally, advertising is terrible on employees. One client drops off and cuts have to be made, so there is a sense of very real fear every day. So he has worked hard to make his agency a great place to work. [10:01] Ken speaks about how advertising has had a “churn and burn” kind of experience in the past. Not having come from advertising, he’s had a different experience of the work. [11:37] Ken continues: “We focused on how do we create a business that is different and the purpose is really not the product we put out. It’s the message that we stand for… How do we do things like create a staff environment that’s not continually expanding and contracting- literal financial stability that is not necessarily dependent on any one particular client..” [12:37] Dan interjects- “We hear about flattening the curve right now- we’ve been flattening the curve our entire careers!” Reflects on the common experience of many ad agencies- working long hours sacrificing family and personal time, busting your butt to get things out the door only to find that the client isn’t happy and you both lose in that situation. [12:56] Dan: “So we now have been thinking through how do we flatten that curve so that through the course of the year, it’s fairly level… you have a few peaks, but it’s not all spikes and then drop offs. Managing that is really about managing a client… getting them on course and managing their calendar, building out longterm plans… looking for the kinds of clients who marry, who don’t date around.” Everyone feels the pain of clients who are not interested in settling down into a longterm plan with you- you, the client, and your team especially. [13:46] Brad speaks about a common theme here on Agency Exposed: “Are our businesses just a commodity or do we have a value that is unique enough that we’re not on that list of customers that are going to go and burn out agencies… our business has struggled because some of our offerings are commodities and others are not.” The fast pace of technology has increased the pace of the agency industry and it’s easy to fall out of step with the changes if you’re not intentional about it and learn to pivot quickly. [15:04] Bob segues into Dan’s book and the principles that he talks about. “Can you talk a little bit about that and maybe contextualize it for what’s going on right now. This whole idea that everything becomes commoditized… if it’s a new technology, new knowledge base, people start to learn it, more people start to learn it and it becomes a commodity… so what digital marketing was 15 years ago you can now pay $5 for someone to do it.” Lately there is a shift that has happened. Where the focus was on quick results expertise, very much focused on bottom dollar ROI, now we read requests for high level Facebook ad specialists, conversion rate optimization specialists. [16:33] Bob: “It almost feels like the tide is going back out again… what are you seeing in the context of what you write about in that kind of tsunami, black wave metaphor.” [16:47] Dan reflects on his childhood proclivity for invention. “My grandfather was an inventor and he taught me a lot about how inventors think.” Modern acceptance is that Amazon IS ecommerce, that it was a battle and Amazon won. Same with social media- there was a war and Facebook won. But an inventor always has hope for something new, for change. They will take ideas, put them together and create social media commerce. There WILL be another shift. [17:54] Dan speaks about the Third Wave Model based on a tsunami metaphor. A tsunami hit Hawaii and many people went out to the shore to marvel at the fish flopping out of water after the first wave hit. Little did they know, that marvel that they were distracted by was a sign of the next wave to come. Many lives were lost to that tsunami, people who were just spectators watching what had taken place. [18:31] Dan says “I believe we’re in the same place. We’re all spectators watching social media saying ‘Well, that’s over, Facebook won, Zuckerberg had the final say’ but there is another shift coming because there’s a mindset shift that took place over the first two waves. The mindset shift came in and said ‘It’s no longer the big three, the big five, whatever the number is in any particular industry to control everything.’” The first wave was thousands of years of agricultural society… the industrial revolution was the first great wave of society’s change in thought. Anyone can get a product. The next wave is information. It allowed everyone to have access to content, and people like Steve Jobs came and said let’s make this kind of computer technology available to the people and not just the big companies. The third wave is the mindset shift. This is where people are given all the power, we call it the participation age. Everyone can participate (this podcast, for example) and everyone can influence. [20:00] Dan talks about how it is no longer the focus to make one company the BIGGEST around, that model is outdated and useless in this day and age. [20:36] “Eventually that model is going to break, well all of them are breaking… It’s better when Daniel Brian meets three other guys who have specific skills that I don’t have, and we intertwine our relationships and build out towards something bigger to serve a bigger population. The participation age is about collaboration and smaller units of power. Getting more access and creating a greater weight than any one big organization could ever create.” [21:04] Brad asks what Dan’s suggestions would be for business owners to position themselves for this next wave. [21:18] Dan responds: #1: Don’t be afraid to talk to your competitors. They have skillsets that help your ability to reach bigger audiences. #2: “Always take the sale, then price yourself out it rather than saying no.” Say yes, then fall back on your connections within your network to help you execute things you could never do by yourself. [22:45] Ken agrees with Dan and recalls that that is the reason that Agency Exposed exists. In advertising things tend to be secretive and closed-off from collaboration, everything is a competition and so we tend to be closed off in disclosing what we’re ACTUALLY really good at versus what we say we are really good at. [24:15] Ken adds: “we often say collaboration over isolation… there’s a balance between saying you can do everything and being specialized.” [24:47] Dan: “It’s about vertical integration… your best new business is your current business.” When a client talks about how they want to explore a new solution, tell them you can figure it out for them. He gives an example of working with Henry Ford healthcare. When they started they had a tiny sliver of a budget with the client, and they began to see things they could do and took on those challenges. They grew from a very niche organization to a broad advisor- “solving the operational problems of the organization with marketing solutions”. [28:04] Bob asks: “What are some lessons you’ve used over 30 years that you could offer to some agency owners right now?” [29:07] Dan responds: “Own the media, it is our future, it is the Black Wave.” He talks about how in the early days of Facebook, if you got 9 million followers, that was a lot and felt very much like your platform like your community. But then Facebook changed that title, and now it’s just likes that you’re getting. So that’s no longer your community, that’s Facebook’s community. And THEN Facebook came in and said hey we can charge you to talk to these followers… “.. So the future is no longer about going to other people’s media and trying to find your way. It’s about creating your own platform, owning that platform, and getting more and more visibility.” [32:24] Bob asks for practical advice for agency owners. [32:37] Dan: “Marketing automation… building around your CRM platform.” [33:39] Brad asks: “What are some ways during Covid-19 that you’ve had to help your customers pivot?” [34:06] Dan says “Don’t look at it as a negative.” He gives the example of Papa John’s sales being up to Superbowl numbers. “And so rather than just start to gouge the customer we tried to say how do we endear our customer and connect to them during this time.” Papa John’s gave away pizza in communities where school lunches were needed. Now in those areas they are far outpacing the market because the communities know what they stand for during this time. Speaking on healthcare opportunities: “We’ve now flattened the curve for the most part, but there’s a second curve coming. The second curve coming is the mental health crisis… the next crisis is the fact that people have lost their jobs… they’ve been rejected from transplant procedures… the mental health crisis is bound to happen.” [36:14] Dan continues: “So now’s the time for us to engage our communities with messages of hope. The future. Finding ways for our health systems to engage people and say, we have a model for getting virtual care because people are afraid to go to the hospital so they’re not getting their care.” Market these new products and give insurance programs that make no copay or half copay for doing the virtual programs that are cheaper. “Build encouragement like Nike did back in the day saying Hey you have hope, you have a future, it’s going to be okay.” [37:05] Brad asks how he is personally staying “up” in all the chaos and working from home. [37:25] Dan: “I’ve been following the stats and trying to be very very informative with them of where I think things are at, telling them about their future. A lot about where we’re going to be… how we’re using this to leverage on Covid marketing. We’re doing a lot of Covid campaigns so we’ve actually seen an increase in our business during this.” He focuses on being human with them, talking about things like impact on families and ability to be with families. Encourages them to be happy about this time and enjoy it. [38:35] Ken asks for elaboration on 2 points. Do you see this changing the way you guys do business? How so? You mentioned that some business has increased- how has that happened and how have you positioned yourself to not be an opportunist in that place, but actually increase your ability to sell well? [39:08] Dan: “I’d be cautious to say that my business has increased… The first moment of the crisis… it took us less than 24 hours to lose a million dollars in contracts.” But they did reach out to clients and say ‘There are things you CAN do to survive and thrive through this, let’s tell people that you’re creating solutions through this.’ Many were not previously in ecommerce but were brought into that world. [41:15] Ken speaks on the shock of losing that much money in 24 hours. “How’d you lead your company through that? How did you take action without freaking out inside?” [41:30] Dan: “Well first I didn’t take action without freaking. I freaked out… for me it’s a faith thing… once I got past that point, I got to my center.” He began looking at government programs, calling his team to see what was needed and what was missing. Did have some layoffs and gave them a long furlough. He applied to gov’t programs and received assistance that brought real encouragement. [43:08] Ken: “As far as opportunities now, as our entire population shifts, how does this shift your business? You talked about the next wave being owned channels… how are you adjusting?” [43:15] Dan: Hospitals without an address are what will win. Telehealth solutions are the next frontier. “Whoever owns that particular market will dominate the market because it’ll be your first call…” [44:38] Ken asks about the same but for Dan’s agency specifically. [44:41] Dan: “Our own media platform is… we’re starting to do a lot more of things like this, content that’s going out to our clients.” Creating their own studies that allow them to inform their clients of where they rank against competitors in the marketplace. [45:44] Bob asks for advice for young solo-preneurs. As the trend of a solo model is becoming more and more popular and talent and resources are being outsourced more and more, what kind of advice can he give to people in the early stages of business? [46:17] Dan: “A lot of the things that I accidentally did when I started DBA.” Keep a small home office to keep costs down- stay lean. Don’t hire people who talk a big talk for the long haul. “Find your experience partners but keep them at arms length, let them have their own business… bring them in when you need it and pay them a premium for short windows of work. Don’t hire full-time people for part-time problems.” [47:20] Bob asks how to scale this. [47:22] Dan: “I’ll tell you when I get there!” Working in this way has allowed him between 5 and 10M in revenue regularly, but getting beyond that is the challenge. [48:45] Brad asks: “How much approximately of your revenue do you spend on specifically reinventing your company, to move your company to the next wave?” [49:00] Dan: “Great question. Critical question. I nearly killed my company three times by missing the point of this question.” “Innovation is very attractive...so we end up getting distracted sometimes… it can become your core. And there’s no financial model for return on it. So if you put all your effort into innovation, you’re overinvesting.” There is an illustration in his book about this, an 80/20 rule. “New business is not a slice in your pie. It’s a completely separate pie...it has to stay away from your core, it has to be a completely separate entity, a separate model, separate team, separate everything, but you want to make sure you’re central and focused on 80% of your business at all times.” [51:20] Bob asks Dan for info on his book and website.
The irony that we are in lockdown during April is not lost on me. April is Stress Awareness Month The Mental Health Foundation discovered that in 2019, 74% of adults felt so stressed that they were overwhelmed and unable to cope (and that was before the current challenges that we're facing!) April is always a busy month for me, delivering stress awareness workshops and sessions to organisations who want to support their employees and give them coping strategies for the year ahead. With this year looking so different, I've decided to run an online Managing Stress Training session on Tuesday 14th April 2-3pm (UK time) This is for a small group of individuals who want: Simple tools to manage stress so that you can think more clearly Strategies to stay calm so that you can function more effectively Easy things that increase your resilience so that you’re able to cope with the coronavirus crisis and the impact it's having on you as a worker and family member It’s just £50 per person to join and I’m keeping the number of attendees small so that the session will include aspects that are personalised and specific for you. https://bit.ly/stressLI In today's episode I'm talking about how we manage stress during this strange lockdown period, how we can recognise stress, what we can do about it and tips for the adjustment period too. I don't deliberately mean to stress you even more, however - I want to share some facts, and my thoughts on this because sometimes getting information and changing the way we think about things is a key part to coping with stressful situations. The answer to the question everyone is asking — "When will this be over?" — apart from gawd knows - is going to be the same answer I used to give adoptive parents when they were dealing with traumatised children..... erm, it might be never be over completely. Sorry to burst your bubble The other question ... when can we get back to normal. What does normal usually look like. What will it look like in the future. It won't be the same. This is going to bring about change. There's going to be change in how we work - maybe more companies, having been forced to accept working from home, will see that it's possible and people / staff / workforce DO still get stuff done. There's going to be a bigger need for looking after mental health. There's going to be changes in how we connect / keep in touch There's going to be changes in all sorts of things that we haven't even thought of yet - NHS, health, shopping, schooling - surely? we can't possible go back to 'how it was' - people have died, people have lost jobs, people have changed and adapted. This is how it is. We change and adapt, but rarely go back. What do common stress responses look like? A tight feeling in your chest Poor memory or struggling to remember everyday things Difficulty sleeping or waking up through the night or early mornings Aches and pains for seemingly no particular reason – tight shoulders, clenched jaw, stiff back or perhaps you're eating chocolate, crisps, carbs and rubbish .. oh and alcohol too! The survival aspect creates the stress response, so our bodies release cortisol (the stress chemical) that makes us crave CRAP (Carbs, Refined food, Additives and Processed food). It's supposed to keep us going whilst we run from the tiger (so to speak) - the only thing is, in modern day, we're sat at our desk, on our sofas, in our cars etc, so we don't burn it off!!! So, we need to calm the internal system. To do this, we need some deep breathing. I talk about it all in more detail on my Managing Stress trainings and webinars ... (there's one happening on 14th April if you want to join or know more) but I also provide a guided relaxation on these because they've been so helpful for people in the recent weeks. What Do We Need to Do with the Stress? Whilst this totally normal it’s also very hard. This will be happening because of the build up of pressure / change / emotions. It’s really important -where you can - to be able to own and admit the difficulties. Remember it’s ok not to be ok. Just as long as you don’t stay in that place for long. Allowing time for a good moan / offload / cry is helpful then it creates space to smile, laugh and do the the positive uplifting things. Know that you are not failing. Let go of all of the ideas you have about what you should be doing right now. Instead, focus on your physical and psychological feelings and what you can do about them. Some people are outwardly active and like to keep busy when they're stressed and anxious. Others stop, freeze, struggle to do anything. It's all normal I'm definitely a hide under the duvet and read a book person. Any response is fine - just know what yours is and don't try to keep up with others who have a different response! The Adjustment Period No-one really feels good during a stressful situation and that's OK. Find ways to stay connected. Pick up the phone - don't just text or email or message Use video calling because eye contact is incredibly connecting, more than we realise. When you've calmed your internal system, with deep breathing, rest, or working off the stress chemical, then you look at your adjustment better. In time your brain can re-set - it will begin to look for opportunities / things to do / different ways to respond. Switch off the 'keep smiling' and 'power through' stuff on social media. Ignore the neighbour who has re-decorated his whole house already!! Your mental shift and adjustment will happen when it's right for you - the more pressure you put on yourself, the more stressed you'll make yourself and then you'll need to go back to point 1 of this podcast! There WILL be a range of emotions that you go through. I spent a day crying last week. No particular reason, just the whole sadness of how it's changing people, places, how we life, my business and personal stuff too. But it's OK to cry, get upset, be pissed off. Allow the emotions to be there, it's part of the process - the adjustment, healing, acceptance. We might be on week 3 of lockdown, but this is just the beginning. As The Queen said, we'll meet again. And we will. Give it time. We must give ourselves time to accept, react and adjust. Then we create a new normal, for a while and hopefully not too long! Before you leave, don't forget to go over a leave a review. Share this with people who will find it helpful. Check out the Managing Stress training session HERE Email me or book a call using this link if you want to talk about working with me on 1:1 basis or getting me to help your workforce.

Gab & Jam Episode Ep 118 Coronavirus Canceled Our Trip; Now What? Video Description As you may already know, our major trip for this year is to Austin, Texas, for the South By Southwest 2020 conference. Needless to say, we were taken aback, since just a week ago, South By Southwest had said that they wouldn’t cancel. Here we were, in the middle of packing and there was no conference to go to. The Coronavirus caused the city of Austin to declare a state of emergency and the conference could not go on. As you might imagine, we have plenty to consider, as we are decide what to do next. We decided upon the following strategies that helped us change our perspective when major plans change suddenly. 4 Tips for Dealing with a Change in Plans: 1. Don’t over-exaggerate its meaning. (God wants what’s best for you and your creative empire. There WILL be other opportunities to showcase your ideas.) 2. Find quality alternatives. (In our case, we thought about going to other synch and/or music conferences, but we’re afraid that travel to it and/or the conferences themselves would be similarly affected. However, we have decided to take a creative and productive stay-cation, where we can refresh blog posts, landing pages, and clean out and organize our creative spaces.) 3. Start planning for next year. (Hell, yeah, we’re planning to attend next year! And the way it stands, there is a possibility that our tickets will be deferred for next year, if they honor their word. So, we’ll start early to get the hotel that we REALLY wanted for a better price than we were going to this year. 4. Keep moving toward your goals. (We’re not going to let this be our crowning moment; the fact that we DIDN’T get to South By Southwest and reminiscing over what COULD HAVE happened. Instead, we are focused on finding other activities we can do to network, partner up, and pitch our songs. We know that this is just a blip on the screen and that there will be more, more, more meetups, conventions and opportunities, if we keep moving in the right direction.) Has the Coronavirus affected your journey to building your creative empire? If so, we’d love to hear your thinking. Please share it in the comments below. FINALLY! An episode of Go Fact Yourself that celebrates trivia AND elitism! In July, Atsuko Okatsuka had perhaps the most on-brand experience that a comedian can have in LA: she got on stage ready to perform right as an earthquake struck. She’ll tell us about why she was so poorly equipped to deal with the situation. Atsuko is also the host of "Let’s Go Atsuko!" a woke Japanese game show. What exactly makes a game show woke? Well… she’ll explain. Joel Stein is a writer whose work has appeared in TIME magazine. It’s been an avenue of great success... but it’s also led to a lot of people wanting him fired. Joel is excited to discuss some of the trivia topics he knows about. But they all pale in comparison to his greatest passion: elitism. In celebration of his new book In Defense of Elitism: Why I’m Better Than You and You are Better Than Someone Who Didn’t Buy This Book, he’ll tell us why we need to embrace expertise over instinct. This week’s discussion topics include cleanliness, classic sitcoms and fancy fountains. What’s the Difference: What a dump What’s the difference between a cobweb and a spiderweb? What’s the difference between "unkempt" and "unkept"? If you’d like to submit a question for our What’s the Difference round, go to gofactyourpod.com and click on "Get Involved." Areas of Expertise Atsuko Otatsuka: Kiehl’s products, the Netflix series "Queer Eye" (seasons 3 & 4) and The Americana at Brand shopping mall. Joel Stein: Old world wine, the TV show, "Taxi" and the first 30 years of president Lyndon B. Johnson’s life. Appearing in this episode: Keith van Straaten Helen Hong Atsuko Okatsuka Joel Stein With guest experts: Jim Doyle, Oscar-winning effects designer and director of design technology at Water Entertainment Technology. Randall Carver, actor from There Will be Blood and "Taxi". Go Fact Yourself was devised by Jim Newman and J. Keith van Straaten, and produced in collaboration with Maximum Fun. Pastor Kurt Carlson - "There Will be Light" - December 1, 2019 by Northwest Covenant Church
Robby Baumgartner began his film career 28 years ago in New York City. His interest in lighting inspired him to choose the unconventional route to DP via Gaffing. This career path allowed him to light films and learn from some of the most talented DP’s in the business: Rodrigo Prieto, Chris Menges, Robert Elswit, Dante Spinotti, Darius Khondji, Janusz Kaminski, and Emmanuel Lubezki. Some of the films include: “8 Mile”, “25th Hour”, “21 Grams”, “Babel”, “Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”, and “There Will be Blood”. In between Gaffing gigs he took every opportunity to DP or camera-operate on feature films, 2nd-unit photography, commercials, and shorts. Then in 2008 “There Will be Blood” shot by Robert Elswit, won the Oscar for Best Cinematography; the highest honor for any DP/Gaffing team. That event was the impetus for Robby to stop gaffing and DP exclusively. In 2009 Robby joined the International Cinematographers Guild as a DP. Since then he has gone on to shoot 2nd unit on both “Hunger Games” l and ll, “Water for Elephants”, and “Argo” amongst other films. For the last 5 years he has been concentrating on shooting main unit for films such as “The Guest”, “Blair Witch (2016)” and now “Blindspotting”, which has been selected for competition in the US Dramatic category at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

It focuses on the clash of Chinese and American cultures in terms of individualism, collectivism and hard work. It’s the first film released by Higher Ground, Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company. Then John talks about the novel Oil!, the basis for the film There Will be Blood. Oil! tells the story of Bunny, the son of an oil magnate who rose from the working class. On this episode I talk about one undeniable truth... There WILL be situations in life that you will hate. My objective with this episode is to convince you that hate can be a very powerful motivator if you allow it.
This is it! Some of you thought we'd never make it to the end. Some of US thought we'd never make it to the end! Aim: Jesus is the resurrection and the life, the Christ, the son of God and we can trust Jesus, his love and purposes. Concluding encouragements: Trust Jesus, His love for you, and His purposes for you in whatever painful circumstances you are in right now. Perhaps your circumstances tempt you to question God’s love for you. Remember that He is accomplishing purposes beyond what we can even imagine. He is good, He is God and we are not. He loves us and wants us trust him, the resurrection and the life. The sisters expected Jesus to come and heal their brother, but he didn’t. Their hearts were broken, but they learned that when Jesus writes their story, He has a purpose much bigger and much better than theirs. God’s glory is shown in His incredible love for us. Please don’t be tempted to put the love of God up against the glory of God. This passage tells us that Jesus stayed where He was for two reasons: the glory of God (v. 4), and his love for this family (v. 5). Preach to yourself the truth of God’s love. There WILL be times in your life that your feelings [or other people] will try to convince you that God doesn’t love you. Maybe answers to your prayers are delayed. You may be tempted to think that God has failed you, betrayed you, that He doesn’t love you. Stand on His promises in the Word. Sometimes change happens super gradually, and sometimes in lightning strikes. Ryan’s was definitely the latter. Ten years ago, on a seemingly random walk through London, Ryan Mathie experienced a profound breakdown that became a huge breakthrough. Since then he’s been incredibly motivated to help other people see how much they’re getting in their own way (like he was, pre-breakthrough), and help them set themselves free. He really LOVES busting through blocks, so we challenged him to help our listeners bust through their oldest, crustiest problems. We picked submissions from six listeners for Ryan to tackle, and he totally delivered. We got into questions like: “I sabotage every job and relationship I enter into it. How can I get out of this vicious cycle?” “How can I stop feeling guilty for saying ‘no’ and having boundaries?” “How can I overcome the fear and perfectionism that keeps me from pursuing my creativity full-out?” “Should I say in my 22-year-long marriage? Or should I call it quits?” “How do I move past ‘just getting by’ when it comes to money and actually thrive?” We also got into what almost every submission we got had in common, and what’s often at the root of our most difficult blocks, regardless of what it may look like on the surface. After you’ve listened, come leave a comment to let us know how Ryan’s coaching resonated with you! FREE WORKSHOP ON JANUARY 28! Three years ago, I wrote this blog about things I wanted to want but didn’t actually care about. Reading it now, in 2019, was fascinating because a lot of these things I have NO energy or shame around anymore. So, what follows is my original blog from 2016, with (in the true spirit of a high school theater nerd) semi-dramatic asides from my 2019 self: I want to tell you that I’m a go-getter. I’d like for you to believe that I spend my days hustling, achieving, and generally “crushing it.” (2019 aside: I actually DON'T want you to think this about me anymore. All of this implies that "crushing it" is the absolute pinnacle of life success, and I know now that it's so NOT). It’d be great if when you thought of me, you envisioned someone who easily and breezily works 8-10 hours a day. Someone who’s constantly on top of her inbox. Someone who has great hair and makeup and puts on real clothes and who juggles everything with a smile and a winning attitude. (2019 aside: The number of hours you work per day is not the only metric of productivity. And I'm writing this from a Starbucks where I'm not wearing makeup, but I AM wearing jeans, so do with that what you will. Also, I was born with chronic bitch face. How likely is it that I’d EVER be someone who smiles constantly??). I want to want that. But I don’t actually want any of it. After you’ve listened, come share the things you WANT to want (but don’t) in the comments. FREE WORKSHOP ON JANUARY 28! OK, procrastinators, it’s time to face the music. (Does anyone here actually NOT procrastinate?? First of all, how dare you? And second, kindly show yourself out). It seems like everyone is forever trying to overcome procrastination. A lot of us believe that if we just read enough “life hacking” articles we can force ourselves into submission. But if you couldn’t guess, we aren’t down with that. In this month’s Side Chat, we’re talking about: When procrastination means something deeper, and when it’s not a big deal When your intuition uses procrastination to try to send you a message, and how to interpret it Using education and research as a form of sneaky procrastination When procrastination masquerades as perfectionism How you can release the pressure so you don’t feel the compulsion to procrastinate as often After you’ve listened, leave a comment to let us know how you’ve been procrastinating how this episode resonated with you! Friends, the reality is that we need to search for a partner who will stand by our side through the storms of life. The first time Kait heard the story of today’s guests she was brought to complete tears. It moved Kait so deeply to see the vast amount of trauma this couple had been through but were able to triumphantly OVERCOME. Today Kait interviews the amazing Gerard and Jeannie Long. Gerard has an extensive banking career background that eventually led him to actually leaving this career to join Alpha USA. Today he is married to the lovely Jeannie and together they live in Malibu. The amazing couple also recently launched the TRIUMPH FOR MARRIAGE COURSE which is an e-learning course for strengthening couples. It’s AMAZING and powerful and we encourage you all to check it out! Gerard and Jeannie have an incredible story of devastation, heartbreak, grief and then restoration and HOPE and love. Today they share about their tragically beautiful story and how they conquered it together with ultimate LOVE and SACRIFICE and SURRENDER through overwhelming healing and STRENGTHENING from God. Friends, the reason why their message is so pivotal is that we believe this lie that relationships are about making us happy. We focus on how the other person can serve our needs and once it gets hard we often see that as a red flag and usually LEAVE for the next thing. The fact of the matter is AND what Jeannie and Gerard’s story shows us is that life is SO much more than just being happy. The storms will come, the unexpected will happen, and at the end of the day you might be left in shambles with your spouse. This is where we have to admit that having a partner to see you through life’s biggest hardship is SO PIVOTAL. Some themes of today’s episode: -Relationships are more about making us HOLY than they are about making us happy. -Character and a person of God is of much greater value than attraction. -There WILL be storms in life. How can we look for a partner to conquer the times of trauma and pain together? -How can we love another person through their seasons of brokenness and darkness? -The pivotal importance of SACRIFICIAL love in relationships. We hope you will listen to todays episode with an open heart. The reality is LIFE will probably get ugly, and painful and hard and sometimes tragic…. so who is it you want standing by your side when that happens? FRIENDS also, we are SO excited to announce the launch of our Dating COURSE: The Date Great Course. Just for Heart of Dating listeners you can be on our list to be the first to get access to this course! Just go to heartofdating.com/dategreat to reserve your spot!
There Will always be an America but what kind of America will it be by Hancock Assembly of God
There WILL be a new episode up tomorrow (Wednesday) and we're back on schedule. There's just been some...butt stuff (nothing dire).
For 20 years Paul Dano has been a revelation in front of the camera. He began in L.I.E., evolved in Little Miss Sunshine, emerged in There Will be Blood, and transmuted in 12 Years a Slave. (There are others, but the list is too long for a podcast description.) Most recently, he's moved behind the camera with "Wildlife", a searing portrait of a fractured family set in 1960s' America. He talks to Sam about his stunning directorial debut, growing up in "East Manhattan", what he learned from filmmaking titans like Kelly Reichardt, Spike Jones, Paul Thomas Anderson, and why he's always - since his days as a child actor - been skeptical of Hollywood.
Hello from the other side … of 30. It’s been a month since I left my 20s, and I’m (Rachel) honestly still processing this milestone. I didn’t expect it to bring up so much grief – anger, frustration, sadness, and waves of anxiety and depression. And while I’ve been riding those waves, it’s become obvious that a lot of people around me are also battling that same current, just for different reasons. So, this mutual experience got me thinking about big life transitions. What do they have in common? How do we ride them out? Why are they so emotional? In this month’s Side Chat we’re talking about: What counts as a transition (that might not have occurred to you) Why all transitions always come with grief, even when they’re happy The true purpose of grief, and how to let yourself feel the deep emotions of a transition phase, without bottling them up Why you don’t need to try to understand your feelings about the transition you’re in The difference between grief and depression How can you use the often chaotic emotions of a transition to help catapult you forward in life After you’ve listened, leave a comment to let us know if you’re in a transition phase, and how this episode resonated with you! My client Dawn was in a major internal tug-of-war. Her boss had just announced he was leaving, which meant his job was opening up. As soon as the job was posted, several of Dawn’s coworkers forwarded her the job listing with notes like, “You would be perfect for this,” and “This has your name all over it.” Dawn was flattered, but torn. She’d never considered applying for her boss’ job, and she wasn’t totally sure she wanted it. It would mean a lot more responsibility, as well as becoming a manager, all of which made her extremely uncomfortable. On the other hand, everyone kept telling her it would be such a great growth opportunity, and it would be a step up the ladder in her career, not to mention a bigger paycheck. It seemed like the logical next step. She asked me, “How do I know if this is worth stepping out of my comfort zone?” As someone who loves being in my comfort zone (whatever the opposite of an adrenaline junkie is … that’s me), but also knows that I can’t stay there forever if I want to keep learning and growing and making an impact, I grapple with this same question frequently. While conventional self-help advice — not to mention countless inspirational Instagram messages — will tell you that all the good stuff in life is outside of your comfort zone, I don’t believe that’s true 100% of the time. I think it’s more nuanced than that. Sometimes getting out of your comfort zone is the best thing you can do to grow as a person. And other times, discomfort is a sign that you’re doing something inauthentic. So how do you tell the difference? I’m sharing 3 questions to ask yourself to determine if something is worth getting out of your comfort zone. Much Love, Rachel (& Kristen) FREE WORKSHOP ON SEPTEMBER 25! Four years ago Teanca Shepherd was burnt out and craving a change. So she picked up and moved about as far away from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as you can get—all the way to Japan. She taught English in Japan for two years, but making a dramatic change hadn’t suddenly solved all of her problems. She was still unsure of what she really wanted out of life, and the clock was ticking loudly on her remaining time overseas. It was at this point that Teanca discovered The Passion Profile Quiz and reached out to us. After coaching with me (Rachel) for a couple months, she felt clear about what she wanted, but her dream job hadn’t instantly landed in her lap … and it didn’t, for another two years. When Teanca emailed me to tell me that she had FINALLY found her dream job, she said that she was SO glad that she waited, even though it had taken so much longer than she had hoped. For that reason alone, I HAD to have Teanca on the podcast. We all (myself included) need to know—how do you weather rejection, uncertainty, fear, and doubt for YEARS, without giving up or losing your faith? So, on this interview with a “normal person” I talk to Teanca about that, and: How she stopped seeking approval, got over her passivity, dropped her people-pleasing habits, and learned how to speak up (& the specific homework I gave her that helped with this) Why your life sometimes NEEDS to be hard, and how you can weather tough times with confidence How she ended up on a team where people root for her success, naps are encouraged, and creativity is a virtue Why your desperation to get a dream job may be the very thing preventing it from happening Why you shouldn’t give in to the temptation to tell people what you think they want to hear in interviews, PARTICULARLY when you really want the job After you’ve listened, leave a comment to let us know how Teanca’s wisdom has resonated with you! Today’s question: Today’s question comes from Bijon in Egypt. What would you do differently when beginning your startup? Jake’s answer: As I think back on the beginnings of Launchpeer, there are definitely a few things I’d do differently. There Will be Setbacks If I could go back to the beginning, I wouldn’t be so naïve about how much work it takes to get a startup off the ground. It’s never smooth sailing from the beginning. When you read about startups that reach profitability rapidly or other reach other key milestones seemingly easily, they are glossing over all of the hardships they encountered on the way. Whether it was not paying the bills for months while waiting for the money to come it or how their technical co-founder screwed them over, all startups have some type of setback that makes their road to success harder. If I could go back I’d plan for things to go wrong and remind myself how much work it takes to get through the obstacles and setbacks in the beginning. Have More Cash on Hand When I started Launchpeer, we had some early small customers and some cash, but I wish we would’ve had more. I wouldn’t put pause on starting Launchpeer without the extra cash, but it would have been nice to have. I didn’t plan well for how long the money was going to last - you have to remember that your money on hand is not only for your business, but for your everyday expenses, which all add up. I would’ve put away six months of expenses before quitting my full-time job to focus on my company. Sales and Marketing are Key I would have learned more about sales and marketing before starting my company. I knew I could manage people and projects, but I did’t know enough about sales and marketing. Even though we had a few early customers, it wasn’t enough. We didn’t spend any money on marketing in the first six months of Launchpeer. Not money, not time, not energy. I didn’t even put money in the budget for marketing. The problem with a services business is that once projects are over, you have to refill your pipeline (over and over again). I wish I would’ve spent more time when we were busy continuing to fill the pipeline. It took us a long time to figure out which marketing and sales tactics we needed to use. Track your Data I didn’t track my data soon enough. We didn’t really track anything - not how many calls we were making, website traffic, etc. You need that data to make good decisions. It won’t matter right away, but as you get into the first 4-6 months of your business, those data points will help you decide how and where to spend your time and money to optimize your business moving forward . Hire the Right People Sooner When we were at a peak of customers, I would have hired someone to do the extra work rather than saving money and doing it myself. You can’t spend time closing deals if you are spending on the day-to-day tasks. This is not a good roller coaster to be on because you’ll never grow. Know your Customer After about a year and a half of Launchpeer, we niched down into one type of customer. Since we do agency-type work, it was hard to set ourselves apart from our competitors. Once we decided we were going to work with startups looking to do Series A fundraising, we were able to change our messaging and brand to target those customers and we began to take off very quickly. If I could go back, I would niche down to one type of customer much sooner. Check out my interview on Mixergy to learn more about our journey or read more on Medium. On today's Mompreneur Model Show, hosts Dori DeCarlo and Traci Timmons share recent developments in their lives and most particularly with Word of Mom Radio, as well as with StadiumBags.com and Safety Bags, Inc. Any entrepeneur who puts a strict timeline on the financial success of their business is almost destined to fail. There WILL be obstacles in your way, and you must find a way to go on. Safety Bags started as a way to help schools become gun and drug free after Columbine. Traci became a health coach to help others achieve optimal health, after she was blessed to learn about mindful choices on nutrition and fitness and then make began a healthier lifestyle. Sometimes I feel like I’ve lived most of my life with only one foot in this realm. The other foot has been exploring Hogwarts, or on a stroll with Lizzie at Longbourn, or running away from white walkers (and TOWARD Jon Snow, if you know what I mean). I’ve spent nearly three decades being mildly annoyed that real life gets in the way of fantasy. To me, fiction and art and music often feel more REAL and TRUE than the monotony of everyday life, with its bills and laundry and mountains of responsibilities. Could you make a case that maybe this is a PROBLEM? That I’m trying to escape reality and live in a perpetual state of denial? You probably could. But hey, I’m still paying my bills, and my laundry gets done, and I’m not shirking my responsibilities. So cut me SOME slack. Thankfully, I’ve found a way to weave creativity into my daily life. I’m not just absorbing other people’s creativity—in the form of books, movies, TV, music, and art—I’ve also built a business that’s fueled by my own creative inspiration (in the form of blogs and podcasts, mostly). But I get that a lot of people don’t have that kind of seamless integration. I was talking to one of my clients, Gwen, about this recently. She was feeling guilty about wanting to pursue writing—something she finds really fun and inspiring—because it’s not “practical.” It got me thinking about how warped our definition of “creativity” is, and how many weird “rules” we silently follow about what we’re “allowed” to pursue, creatively. In this week’s blog I’m (Rachel) talking about why you should never feel guilty about doing what you love (be it writing, Netflix, or anything else), and what the REAL definition of creativity is. Do you ever feel a little bit crazy? Like you’re alone in a crowd of people who don’t FEEL things as deeply as you do? Maybe sometimes you find yourself wondering, “Am I broken? Why is life so much easier for these people?” If so, you’re likely a Highly Sensitive Person. Being highly sensitive is an awesome gift. It means you’re probably extra creative, intuitive, and capable of being deeply moved by the small things in life. But here’s the problem—we don’t live in a world that places a high value on those things. So what do we do when the world wants to tell us we’re broken? That the very traits that make us awesome are also what people believe need fixing? On this episode we talk about: How to tell if you’re a Highly Sensitive Person (we run through a list of attributes and give you guidance on where to take a self-assessment) Why the most highly sensitive people are always the most genius artists and creatives, too Why HSPs are VERY likely to get diagnosed with anxiety, depression, and other disorders How to let yourself feel all the things without shutting down or going crazy The most critical things you can do to protect and take care of yourself so that you can have the best of both worlds—getting to be sensitive without feeling crazy, anxious, or overwhelmed FREE WORKSHOP ON 4/27/18 If you enjoy any of our current episodes and decide to subscribe, rate, and review before Tuesday, April 24, then we’d love to invite you to a FREE online workshop and Q&A session we’re doing about Passion Profiles on Friday, April 27 at 1pm Eastern. You know how it goes … you see someone’s incredible vacation photos on social media, while you watch the rain pour down outside your tiny office window (or, worse, as you stare at the windowless grey walls of your cube). Or you hear about an old friend who just got an amazing promotion at a company you’d kill to work at. Or your coworker gushes about how sweet her husband was for surprising her with concert tickets for their one-year anniversary, while you haven’t even been on a date in months. The envy starts to creep in, and you’re left feeling annoyed, resentful, deflated, or just plain sad. The worst part of jealousy is the self-judgment and shame that often comes along with it. Many of my clients, after embarrassedly sharing a situation where they felt envious, will say things like, “I have to plaster on a smile and fake excitement, even though I feel like the jealousy is strangling me. What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I just be happy for that person??” I’m guilty of this, too — both feeling jealous and judging myself for it. Thankfully, in the past few years I’ve completely reframed how I feel about jealousy and I stopped feeling guilty and ashamed of it. In my first podcast edition of our blog, I’m (Kristen) talking about how I now actually LOVE when I get jealous because I believe it’s one of the very best tools for figuring out what you’re passionate about, making authentic decisions, and getting over analysis paralysis. This blog was originally published in December of 2016, but I brought it back for our podcast launch because it’s something I remind myself and my clients of often, so I figured you might benefit from the same reminder. Welcome to the inaugural episode of Dear Krachel, a monthly advice segment where we answer audience questions about life, career, relationships, and anything that helps you become a more whole, fulfilled version of yourself. On this episode we’re answering questions from: Jen, who wants to find a mentor in a field where women (and particularly women of color) are scarce. Matt, who’s taking the road less traveled and is wondering how to find life satisfaction outside of a career. Eryn, who’s questioning how important “career direction” really is, and why there’s so much pressure to be a “girl boss.” Saska, who’s been through a whirlwind year of loss and upheaval in her life, and want’s to know why we’re all so obsessed with “change for the sake of change.” Want to submit a question for our May episode of Dear Krachel? Making friends in college was easy. How could you NOT, when you’re in a bubble with people your own age that you have so much in common with? But eventually that bubble bursts. We enter the “real world” and find that it’s HARD to make authentic, genuine connections as an adult. We live in a world that’s as connected as we’ve ever been, while simultaneously feeling as lonely and DISCONNECTED as we’ve ever felt. Neither of us are great at making friends (introvert problems), so for our inaugural interview with an expert we brought on one of our favorite extroverts and certified coaches, Carolyn Birsky, to help us get to the root of how to find your tribe—be they friends, colleagues, or ANYONE we want to build a meaningful, fulfilling relationship with. On this episode we talk about: Why letting your guard down and being vulnerable is the prerequisite to finding your tribe How to ask someone on a “friend date” How to stay connected with friends when you start to drift apart When to “break up” with a friend, and when to try harder Where to go to find likeminded people and strategies for staying in touch once you’ve met a potential tribe member How to navigate your way around the awkwardness of networking and small talk FREE WORKSHOP ON 4/27/18 If you enjoy any of our current episodes and decide to subscribe, rate, and review before Tuesday, April 24, then we’d love to invite you to a FREE online workshop and Q&A session we’re doing about Passion Profiles on Friday, April 27 at 1pm Eastern. I believe that every person is actually two people: The person you really are (deep down, on the inside, where you think no one can see). And the person you think you should be in order to be liked, loved, and accepted. Glennon Doyle (who wrote one of my favorite books of 2016, and maybe my favorite memoir ever, “Love Warrior”) calls that second person “the representative.” Your representative is a version of you that’s sent into the world in your place. It’s a blander, less authentic person who stands in for you when it doesn’t feel safe to expose the REAL you. Your representative is the one who … Plasters on a fake smile, when you’d rather be anywhere else than the meeting you’re sitting in. Doesn’t speak up, even when you’ve got an opinion, for fear of being judged. Knows exactly what to say to keep being liked and praised. Keeps you jumping through hoops, constantly trying to prove your worth. Has a bunch of acquaintances, but very few real connections. Most of us have been sending out representatives for so long that we can’t remember NOT having one. They spring to life for almost all of us at a VERY early age. And every time a representative is born, it ALWAYS emanates from the same deep fear: Who you really are is not good enough. In this inaugural blog reading, I’m (Rachel) talking about how to let go of your representative, and actually be accepted for who you are. This blog was originally published in October of 2016. I brought it back for our podcast launch because it touches on the themes of connect and belonging—things that kept coming up in our other episodes. When Kyle Ramsvig was a teenager she found out that nearly all of the girls in the senior class of her small, private high school were either in therapy or on anti-depressants—all of them had thought they were broken, but none of them were talking about it with each other because they were ashamed. In this inaugural interview with a “normal person,” Rachel talks to Kyle (one of her clients) about why we’re so afraid of our feelings and how to live a happy, fulfilled life in a world that often makes us feel wrong for being human. We talked about: Why millennials being told that they’re “special” may have backfired How almost everything you feel is normal, and why none of it makes you a freak How you can experience all that life has to offer—the high-highs, low-lows, and the vast amounts of mediocrity in between—and be happier than you’ve ever been Why so many of us pour ourselves into trying to find an identity through our careers, why that never works, and what actually DOES work instead How to be content with life even when you don’t have a “title” or ton of career direction FREE WORKSHOP ON 4/27/18 If you enjoy any of our current episodes and decide to subscribe, rate, and review before Tuesday, April 24, then we’d love to invite you to a FREE online workshop and Q&A session we’re doing about Passion Profiles on Friday, April 27 at 1pm Eastern. Women didn’t have the right to vote in America until 1920. We couldn’t apply for a credit card on our own, without the permission of a father or husband, until 1974. And in 2018, we’re STILL waiting for a guarantee of equal pay. We’ve come a long way, but there’s a lot further to go. When women entered the workforce en masse in the first half of the 20th century, the system had already been built in a way that suits people who are masculine—but not necessarily people who are wired in a feminine way. And having to fit into that system is taking a HUGE toll on us. It’s a quiet way that we’re still struggling for equality, and it’s about time we started talking about it. On this episode we talk about: Why “equality” doesn’t mean having to become masculine in order to succeed in your career What “masculine” and “feminine” actually mean (we guarantee you’ve got some misconceptions on this one) Why you might be struggling with burn-out, fatigue, and overwhelm How to go after freedom and flexibility, even if you feel trapped in a rigid environment How to embrace your intuition and emotions in a workplace that doesn’t encourage you to How you can get more done, in less time, and still feel rested and energized FREE WORKSHOP ON 4/27/18 If you enjoy any of our current episodes and decide to subscribe, rate, and review before Tuesday, April 24, then we’d love to invite you to a FREE online workshop and Q&A session we’re doing about Passion Profiles on Friday, April 27 at 1pm Eastern. In this inaugural episode you’ll meet us, Kristen and Rachel (two best friends from college and certified life coaches), and get a taste of what we’re here to do. Namely, help you cut through the information overload, get unstuck, and focus not JUST on how you can have a career you’re passionate about, but how to create a whole LIFE that feels fulfilling. New episodes will drop twice a week. On Tuesdays you’ll get quick 7-10 minute audio editions of our weekly blog, and on Fridays you’ll get a rotating array of interviews with experts, fireside chats with the two of us, interviews with normal people (because the wisdom of 95% of humanity is way underrated), and a listener advice column called Dear Krachel (don’t you have a celebrity couple nickname with your BFF? #135 Navigating to Nowhere? – with Michael Fuehrer Our guest this week proves that you don’t have to be an interior designer to live in a lovely, comfortable, and impressive space on wheels. While attending tiny house events in Washington, Texas, and Florida; Michelle noticed an increasing number of Schoolies joining the party! And, known to go where the party is, Michelle met our guest this week and was immediately comfortable in his space; a renovated school bus. What tiny houses lack in mobility, busses more than make up for! Imagine. Just get in the driver’s seat and GO! What are the unique challenges of driving and parking these funky houses on wheels? What motivated Michael to renovate a bus, instead of an RV? How easy, or hard, are they to drive and heat and occupy? And, what do his parents think? This professor on wheels has a lot to teach us so sit down, be quiet, and take notes. There WILL be a quiz!! www.navigationnowhere.com
Welcome to Sex Archie: The Riverdale Recap Podcast This episode covers Chapter 28: There Will be Blood by Aaron Allen, directed by Mark Piznarski Everyone references their favorite Robert Redford movies as it's time to pick a new mayor. Meanwhile, the Blossom fortune is divided and the Lodges' secret comes out.
Rundown: Any Paul Thomas Anderson movie, like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, There Will be Blood or Inherent Vice, is something to be paid attention to even if they do not always land in a satisfying way. We're looking at you Inherent Vice. And any movie with a Daniel Day Lewis performance is something to be cherished because they don’t come around that often. So to have this movie, about a dressmaker in 1950s Britain come out in New York and LA last November but not being able to see it until the latter half of January is irritating. I’m Theo Mayer - the Chief Technologist for the Commission and your host. Welcome to the show. [MUSIC] This was a big week 100 years ago in the War that changed the world. Looking back - --- America declares war 6 months ago and the first American troops arrive in Europe 4 months ago. This week 100 years ago, the Army’s 1st division quietly deploys to Sommervillier - in france - a village near the western front almost directly between Belgium and Switzerland. We put a link in the podcast notes to some National Archive footage showing the the soldiers of the 1st division moving their horse drawn wagons, mechanised trucks, artillery and men to the fighting front. This is in the midst of a lots of controversy, conflicting agendas… opinions, and a very dire situation in the war “over there”. So let’s jump into our wayback machine to see what going on and how things play out 100 years ago this week. World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week [MUSIC TRANSITION] We are nearing the end of November 1917 and in the US, speculation is high about “Our Boys” getting into the fight. The official bulletin says NOTHING about this, the Wilson administration is being obscure, but the public press is sensing that something is up. [Sound Effect] Dateline: October 22, 1917 The headline in the New York Times reads: Hints Our Army is Near Action…. Secretary Baker’s guarded review is taken to mean that soldiers soon will be in the trenches. In the story it reads: In his review to press, Secretary of War Baker emphasized the status of the Pershing expedition by giving it the most prominent position in his analysis of the military equation. He declares that “our men in France, after three months of intensive training, are in splendid physical condition and efficient fighting trim” and that they “Now feel at home in the war zone”. The Secretary had no comment to make on the statement, but the interpretation placed on his words, when carefully weighed here tonight, is that they mark the verge of the actual entrance of the American Troops into the fighting line. Now Over in Europe, the situation is both complex and dire. We are going to zoom out for an overview of the situation. The troops on all sides are deeply war weary from the intense multi-year carnage of this unprecedented conflict. The Russians are effectively falling out of the fight with internal revolution and mass mutinies within their ranks. Everyone is clear that Russia is dropping out. This will free up a massive resources for the Germans for an expected major spring offensive. Although the Americans have come to join the fight, and despite having been technically at war since April, the United States has just four infantry divisions in France. These are not seasoned troops. These are young civilians short on training, equipment, modern staff techniques and without combat experience. This raises a contentious concept called Amalgamation. Amalgamation would have the United States insert its men directly into existing British and French units at the company level. This, argue the europeans, would compensate for the American officers and NCOs lack of familiarity with modern staff arrangements and technologies like aviation, armor, machine guns and heavy artillery. American troops would thereby be commanded at the tactical level by American junior officers, but the operational and strategic direction of American forces would be handled by more experienced Europeans. Though this sounds practical, many Americans including General Pershing look at the enormous casualty levels on the western front and recoil against the thought of our young men being used as cannon fodder by European generals. Pershing believes that the Europeans have become too tied to trench warfare. He has a different concept embodied in his "open warfare" doctrine, which, he argues, will restore mobility to warfare by emphasizing American aggressiveness and marksmanship. Politically, Wilson and his advisors also recognized that amalgamation of American forces will not allow for a distinctive American presence on the western front. Wilson believes that he will need to be able to point to an American contribution to victory if he is to represent American interests in any post-war peace conference. Yet it is obvious that the Americans are not yet ready to fight on their own. Americans have virtually no experience in this new modern warfare. They need time to learn about it, trench warfare and modern tactics. They also need time to build relationships with their French and British allies and to overcome the crazy inefficiencies of their own mobilization. There is great confidence that we can do it. The question is whether we can be trained, blooded, and effective in time to stop the German spring offensive. So on October 21, the first of the doughboys pack up, and General John J. Pershing leads the 1st Division to Sommervillier - a relatively quiet part of the western front to take the men of the American Expeditionary force to the fight 100 years ago this week! We want to thank Michael s. Neiberg and Harold K. Johnson professors of Military history at the US Army War College for their great and insightful article on the subject. The endless carnage, devastating conditions and futile progress at Passchendaele is taking its toll on men and morale - especially with the British troops under a seemingly uncaring British commander - General Douglas Haig. Discontent is boiling up in the ranks. Mike - please tell us the story… [Mike Shuster] Thank you Mike. That was Mike Shuster from the Great War Project blog. The Associated press has a reporter that gets to see a intact captured german Zeppelin. [Sound Effect] Dateline: Sunday October 21, 1917 The Headline in the NY times reads: “Americans Inspect Captive Zeppelin” “French also throng to see the great airship that was brought down intact! Germans Tried to wreck it… Prevented by victorious French Aviator who showed great pluck!” In this illustrative story we learn many things about these giants of the sky what were sometimes referred to as Baby Killers or Pirates because of their bombing of civilian areas. The story reads: The crews of the Super-Zeppelins L49 and L50 have been interrogated and their replies confirm the supposition that they made up part of a single expedition against England. The Pirate fleet numbered twelve and left their stations separately. The prisoners say that when they reached the English coast, they were much bothered by anti-aircraft guns and even more by searchlights. L-50 quickly dropped its bombs and then rose to a height of three miles where they were caught by strong winds. Zeppelin L-49 came down near Bourbonne-Les-Bains--- intact, as were its machinery and its instruments. When the Zeppelin’s commander saw that it was impossible to save his ship, he destroyed the wireless apparatus and tried to explode the airship by firing his pistol into it. An opportunity was given to some American Officers to inspect the craft with French flying men. The whole body of the Zeppelin is painted black except the top, which is silvered. There is a small German Cross on each side amidships. The German airmen seemed surprised to see the Americans who had an opportunity to talk with some of them, and also with the Zeppelin commander, a slight blonde Lieutenant, speaking excellent english. A young French aviator told how he flew in pursuit of the Zeppelin to such an altitude that his cheeks froze and how he succeeded finally in forcing the craft down with his machine gun. When he saw they were about to land, he dived to earth. Other french aviators landed near. At the point of his pistol, the germans were prevented from damaging the craft further and were made prisoner. This is from an Associated Press report and a newspaper article published in the New York Times - and it is a story that unfold in the great war in the sky one hundred years ago this week. You’ll be able to tune in to Facebook live to watch the ceremonial groundbreaking for the National World War I Memorial at Pershing Park in Washington DC. It may surprise our listeners to learn that in Washington DC there is no national WWI memorial honoring our doughboys, their sacrifice and their victory in WWI. It’s true! There is a memorial for WWII, for Korea and for Vietnam but none for WWI. With is today is a man who has passionately been addressing this issue for the better part of a decade - maybe longer. He is also the Vice Chair of the World War One Centennial Commission - Edwin Fountain. Edwin welcome to WW1 Centennial News! [Edwin - Why is it important that we build a national WW1 Memorial in our nation’s capital.] [Edwin - tell us about America’s WWI Memorial in Pershing Park what is it going to be like?] [We will post a link to that sculpture design in the podcast notes.] [How can our listeners help build this memorial for our doughboys?] Thank you Commissioner Edwin Fountain. That was Edwin Fountain - the vice-chair of the US World War One Centennial Commission. Really… So was there a drug culture in the trenches and informants to the military narcotics vice squad?? - well no - Contrary to popular belief, the word “nark” -- spelled n-a-r-k -- doesn’t come from the word “narcotics” at all. In fact, it’s origin comes from the word for nose, “Nak”, N-A-K in Romany, the language of the Romany or Gypsy people. It’s original use in pre-war England was in relation to people who stick their nose in other people’s business - informers, or perhaps because they sniffed out trouble! During the war, the word was brought into the trenches and spread into the American and ANZAC vocabularies. It came to mean a soldier who would reveal other private’s secrets, usually in order to improve his own standing. Nark -- the last kind of soldier you want to be! Last month, we announced the first 50 “WWI Centennial Memorials”. We’ll be awarding another 50 matching grants early next year. If you live in a town that has a WWI memorial that might want a little attention… now is the time to go to ww1cc.org/100memorials and learn what you can do about it, what others have done and how to apply for the matching grants. The 100 Cities / 100 Memorials project in Danville, Pennsylvania was one of the first 50 awardees - and here to tell us about the project is Jamie Shrawder, the Administrator of Governmental Affairs for the borough of Danville. Welcome, Jamie! [exchange greetings] [Jamie - Danville has a memorial park with several monuments - The four sided WWI monuments is really striking with an eagle atop a four sided granite base. When did it get erected?] [How do you and how does Danville feel about being one of the awardees and your memorial getting designated as a WWI Centennial Memorial?] [I saw in your proposal that you approached various veterans organizations to support the restoration - how did that work out?] [Cleaning up one of these historic memorials isn’t done by grabbing a can of brasso and polishing up the brass (BTW - I just felt 1000 conservators cringe at once) - how do you go about it?] [do you have plans for a rededication?] [exchange thanks] That was Jamie Shrawder, the Administrator of Governmental Affairs for the Borough of Danville. We are going to continue to profile 100 Cities / 100 Memorials projects - not only awardees but also teams that are continuing on to round #2 which is now open for submissions. So listeners - this weekend - if you are in the United States - take a few minutes look around your town and find your local WWI memorial. There WILL be one.. The Battle was so devastating for the combatant Italian forces that the word Caporetto gained a particular resonance in Italy. It is used to denote a terrible defeat – the failed General Strike of 1922 by the socialists was referred to by Mussolini as the "Caporetto of Italian Socialism". In 1917 - the Italians lost 305,000 men, 265,000 of those as prisoners of war. Though not as devastating, the German and Austro Hungarian lost 70,000 men in that battle. Commemorations at the Kobarid Museum include a new exhibition with the title "Kobarid, Caporetto, Karfreit 1917"; there will also be a ceremony along the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic, lighting candles at the memorials and cemeteries on the way. Many more events are scheduled, including a cross country running event in the region that will join the former combatants as colleagues - You can find out more by heading to the Kobarid Museum’s website and the Walk of Peace website. On November 3rd 1917, Corporal James Gresham, and Privates Thomas Enright and Merle Hay, were killed in action during a German trench raid near the little village of Bathelémont (baa-tel-ay-mon) in France. These soldiers -- all members of F Company, 16th Infantry -- were the first three American combat casualties in World War I. The 16th Infantry Regiment Association will honor Gresham with the dedication of a plaque at his mother’s home in Evansville, Indiana, at 10:00 am, on November 3rd this year. The article includes a conversation with the Association's President, Steven E. Clay, about about the 16th Infantry's soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. US WWI Centennial commissioner Monique Seefried attended the ceremony at Versailles. This week at ww1cc.org/news -- she talked to us from France about the event, the statues, and what they mean for the future of the French-American legacy. " Consider those women who write about the contortions on domestic life and feminine sensibility brought about by war... Author, veteran, and teacher, Peter Molin, explores the idea this week in a post about poet Aline Murray Kilmer, wife of well-known American WWI poet, Joyce Kilmer, who was killed during the Second Battle of the Marne in 1918. Aline's poetry conveys the urgency and nuance of a war wife's uncertainty as she finds her tranquility and self-worth vexingly dependent on her husband, even in his permanent absence. Don't miss this rich, insightful post about the often-overlooked and, yes, war poet, Aline Kilmer! Old Rhinebeck Aerodome We’ll start with a Facebook post from the Old Rhinebeck Aerodome. They had a WW1 Airshow on October 15th, the last for their season this year, and someone in attendance shared a bunch of really great photos from the event on Facebook. Pilots wore WW1 era uniforms, both Doughboy and German, and there was even an old Ambulance and stretcher bearers in case anyone got hurt. The afternoon included a hero, a heroine (Cheer!), the villainous Black Baron of Rhinebeck (Boo!), and pyrotechnics, as well as some really beautiful aircraft, including a Fokker Triplane and, my personal favorite, a reproduction 1910 Hanriot. See the photos, and visit the Aerodome website, at the links in the podcast notes. link:https://www.facebook.com/groups/oldrhinebeckaerodrome/permalink/1746902505342287/ http://oldrhinebeck.org/ Unknown Soldier Finally this week, I wanted to share an article from History.com that is yet another powerful story as we lead up to Veterans Day: the selection of the Unknown Soldier. On October 24th, 96 years had passed since the first Unknown Soldier was selected by a US Officer in the French town of Chalons-sur-Marne. According to the official records of the Army Graves Registration Service, four bodies were transported to Chalons from the cemeteries of Aisne-Marne, Somme, Meuse-Argonne and Saint-Mihiel. French and American officials then underwent the ceremony of selecting one of the four caskets displayed, each draped with an American flag. Sergeant Edward Younger, the man given the task of making the selection, carried white roses to mark the chosen casket. According to the official account, Younger “entered the chamber in which the bodies of the four Unknown Soldiers lay, circled the caskets three times, then silently placed the flowers on the third casket from the left. He faced the body, stood at attention and saluted.” The “Unknown Soldier” remains in Arlington National Cemetery to this day, honored among and for the approximately 77,000 United States servicemen killed on the Western Front during World War I. And with that, we continue the countdown to veterans day. That’s it this week for the Buzz! link:https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/unknown-soldier-is-selected Thank you Katherine. Special guest host Lizzie Buehler joins us to discuss not throwing away our shots, toxic masculinity, and the musical stylings of Glee. Ambition is our topic of the hour: is it a good thing or a bad thing (in general and for our main characters), is it different from having drive or passion, and how do our featured stories treat it differently when the ambitious character in question is a gal or a dude? Homework for the episode: the soundtrack to Hamilton, There Will be Blood, and a couple episodes of Glee for good measure.

What We Heard: Rodney Wilson, Pastoral Counselor at LifePoint Church in Smyrna, TN, reminds us that marriage takes work! There WILL be conflict. It’s not a question of ‘if’ it will happen but instead ‘how’ will we respond when it does happen. Married couples will face issues on many fronts. Some will seem very small and others will appear unresolvable. Are we prepared for the conflict? Rodney, who celebrates 40 years of marriage, gives several great insights to help us prepare for various conflicts we’ll face in marriage. The goal is ‘civil disagreement’, learning to be civil with one another as we walk through conflict resolution. One of the biggest battles we will face in reaching this goal will be our internal battle with an “I attitude”. We should always strive to take our eyes off of ourselves. It’s important to remember that “what we feed grows and what we starve dies” so we should starve selfishness, anger, lust, pride and other ungodly things. Rodney points out that men tend to have a fight or flight mentality when dealing with conflict resolution .It’s important for us to learn how to fight and how to step away from the conflict to create space to breathe and hopefully avoid responding out of emotion. Get the anger out of the conflict. Yelling to get your point across is NOT more clearly communicated or understood by your spouse, it’s only louder. This is also true for resolving conflict with children- get anger out of the conflict. Train them in the way they should go not in the way they want to go. What It Means It will take energy, it can be hard work, but we must be intentional in preparing for conflict. There is so much at stake. How we invest today in our marriage will show up tomorrow, so we must invest wisely. What We Do Next: Communicate, communicate, communicate! Speak honestly with your mate about whatever issue you’re facing and then allow space, a time to process. As conflicts arise, we should always be willing to say to our spouse, “I need your help with this”. This nurtures a feeling that you’re working together on the problem. Our leadership sets the tone for our homes so we should strive to be servant leaders, thinking of the other as more important. Final Takeaways: We grow together as we walk together through conflict. How we resolve the ‘little’ conflicts will inform how we resolve the bigger conflicts.
Let’s face it, modern relationships can be kinda complex. And if you’re in a relationship with someone who has been divorced, and has children from their previous relationship - or if you have children from a previous relationship, then you’re probably in the middle of that kind of complexity. Back in Episode 21, with Katherine Woodward Thomas, we talked about Conscious Uncoupling and the inner work required to heal from past relationships so you can be present for your current relationship. In today’s episode, we’re going to tackle the topic of success in a post-divorce family head-on. There are challenges that are unique to this situation - and you’ll find that the strategies for succeeding come down to themes that we’ve been covering on the show. How do you connect, communicate, co-parent, and get really clear in a potentially complicated situation? That’s what today’s show is about. Our guest is Susan Wisdom, retired therapist and author of the classic book “Stepcoupling: Creating and Sustaining a Strong Marriage in Today’s Blended Family”. It’s one of the few books on the topic - and fortunately it offers a lot of helpful information and strategies for strengthening your relationship, and your family, when you’re operating in a post-divorce world. If you’re not in this situation, then I think you’ll find that today’s show has some great insight that can help any relationship, especially if children are present. In this conversation, Susan Wisdom and I cover the following: The 4 C’s are helpful building blocks for successfully navigating stepcoupling, they are: CONNECTION COMMUNICATION COPARENTING CLARIFICATION CONNECTION: Connection is that wonderfully good feeling that is the glue that keeps couples together. It can be in the form of a thought, a behavior, a caring action, or a feeling that conjures togetherness. The more connection that exists in the stepcouple, the better coparents you will be, and the sooner the children will feel safe and trusting of their new family dynamics. COMMUNICATION: Communication is key in building and sustaining the stepcouple (and any relationship). It is important to learn to communicate in healthy ways, and from a place of deep respect and curiosity. Remember that listening and receiving is just as much part of communicating as voicing and articulating. When you hear your partner say something that begins to boil your blood or trigger you, try on a “hmmm” response- switching from immediate reactivity to questioning and curiosity. Clear communication relies on calmness- calm language and a calm nervous system- if you find yourself drifting out of this, take a deep breath and try again. CO PARENTING: Issues around co parenting go hand in hand with a dedication to communication. Successful co parenting does not necessarily come naturally, rather it is a dynamic that must be addressed head on, created together, and continually nurtured. Face this directly- develop a plan and find strategies that work for the two of you. As you do this, be patient with each other- you are not always going to get your own way. Instead, observe your partner as they parent, and be open to their influence. Furthermore, be open to the concept that by letting go of some control, you are helping to create a stronger team. CLARIFICATION: Be willing and able to look at your coparenting dynamic from multiple perspectives, and with a curious mind. Notice, inquire, and remain aware of how issues from the past are manifesting in your current relationship. Stepcoupling- The foundation of a strong blended family relies on the health and strength of the step-couple themselves. When all's said and done, are you each fully committed and in love? Your YES will carry you through the constant challenges (and blessings) inevitable when raising a blended family. It is common for children of split families to try to drive a wedge into the new couple as a reaction to their still being upset about the loss of the original parental couple. If the stepcouple themselves does not feel like a team, the couple AND the children will begin to feel threatened, weakened, and ultimately untrusting. If on the other hand the couple is strong, then the children will begin to trust, adjust, and it will be more natural. Be aware that an adjustment period is natural for all- and be careful to balance your attention between the bond you must maintain with your children, and your excitement for this new blossoming relationship you are in. Know that it is possible! The good news is that if you travel the distance together, there is a tremendous amount of love and fun that is possible! Differences are inevitable and beautiful. There is often a period of shock for partners after deciding to move in together because there are dynamics and details that were never visible or experienced during the honeymoon phase. Accept that these challenges are inevitable. Be patient, join support groups, get counseling, and begin to bust through these unrealistic co parenting expectations and myths: MYTH 1: You will quickly and naturally adjust to your partner’s children once you get married. MYTH 2: You will instantly love your stepchildren as you love your own children MYTH 3: You will attach and bond equally with all children in the family You don’t have to immediately love your step children. Shall we repeat this? You do not have to immediately love your step children. In fact, it is very natural and normal to not love your step children. So stop shaming yourself if you find that you do not love your partner’s children as if they are your own, and focus on being a responsible adult, caring for the children, and responding and providing for their needs. Honor the fact that your relationship with your stepchildren is a unique and different form of relationship, and allow the love to grow in its own time. It is all a work in progress. It can be helpful to acknowledge that blending your families together is essentially an exercise of figuring out how a group of strangers can fit together. This adjustment is going to look different for every family, and for every member of the family. It will develop over time, and it will develop that much stronger if the couple does not hold tightly to expectation that “we love each other so this should be easy”. It is unrealistic to believe that you will agree on how to raise or discipline your children, in fact, you may never together agree- but you can find ways to compromise and to create new ways together. Remember the beauty and gift of blending families is that you get to develop your own family system! Styles and value differences in families can be DELIGHTFUL. Parenting is always difficult, and coparenting can be exponentially harder because there are inherently more differences in the picture. Not only is the couple coming from different backgrounds (as is true in all couples) but the children also come into the new family with their own differences in backgrounds, experiences, temperaments, genes, traditions, values, senses of humor, etc. In original families it is possible to maintain an illusion of some cohesion in values, but as soon as you are working in a blended family, all bets are off! It is up to the stepcouple to hold a space for all these differences, and in order to do so there must be strength, love, humor as the glue to hold together the differences of the couple themself! You will have to try to do anything and everything to foster acceptance of the breadth of experience and values that are now essentially being married together. On the toughest days, try on the mantra: different can be delightful! Can you find ways with your partner and your kids to celebrate this chance you have to redefine values, create new patterns, and cohabitate a myriad of differences? Do you want to be right? Or do you want to be together? As you figure out what is going to help make your family stay together over time, return to this question often. Learn to recognize when you are triggered, stop playing the right/wrong game, and find ways to ground yourself in a process (versus immediate result) oriented view. There WILL be compromises. There WILL be adjustments. There WILL be misunderstandings. And there WILL be solutions. Try to not take it personally. Do you find yourself saying “my stepkids do not respect me” or “my stepkids never listen to me”? Taking behavior personally is a common and nearly universal reaction for stepparents. Have patience with your vulnerability, while trying to not take your stepchildren’s actions too personally. The truth is that they do not know you yet, and they are likely not excited about your entry into the family- for reasons having nothing to do with who you are, rather with that you represent a loss and change. Furthermore, the children are protecting themselves from more disruption and change by testing you to see if you will stay. This trust takes time. And in the meantime, remind yourself often that these children have good reason to not trust, and that their extreme behavior is likely a manifestation of their incredible self-protective instincts. Get curious. Bear in mind, especially in the hardest moments, to embody the qualities of RESPECT and CURIOSITY. Get seriously curious. Who are these children? Where did these children come from? What do they like? What do they not like? Get to know these children. Try dedicating time to get to know each kid independently, while also creating times and ways for the whole family to come together, whether this is during meals, weekend activities, or certain rituals and traditions. Your place as a stepparent will develop over time, and it will come from personal authority versus positional authority. You are setting yourself up for major struggle and tension if you come in believing that “these children should respect me- I’m the adult here”. Personal authority, instead of positional authority, develops from the slow building of rapport and trust. It is slower to develop but it is genuine and long lasting. Extend curiosity to your partner. As you begin to blend your families, you will begin to observe reactions, responses, actions, and patterns in your partner that you might not have been aware of before. Do not assume you understand why your partner does or believes what they do- ask! The more questions you ask yourself and your partner the more clarity and connection you will feel that will help to create that sense of togetherness that is essential in building a strong family foundation. Ask your partner what their relationship is to cleanliness, to religion, to money. Ask how their parents disciplined them, how their parents showed affection, how they were taught to respect their parents, and on and on. You can get creative with your curiosity! This inquiry will yield helpful insight, at the same time as it will develop a sense of feeling respected and invested in. Nothing is more loving than asking those open-ended questions that say ‘my heart wants to understand you’. Acknowledge the children’s feelings and discomfort. Even in the best case scenarios, familial transitions and blending of families is disruptive for children. It is confusing for kids, and it must be known and appreciated that it will take a while for kids to trust the new arrangements. It takes time, gentleness, developmentally appropriate responses, flexibility, and consistency. Truly be there. For the good, the bad, and the ugly, the stepcouple must be there. The stepcouple must show the children that their relationship is strong enough to keep the kids safe, and they must model for the children that having mixed emotions is okay and tolerable. Be aware that the stress that you feel as a couple reverberates throughout the family, and take responsibility for looking inwards when there is stuff coming up with kids. See yourself as the source of your experience- Be mindful of any victim narrative you are living in. Meaning that if you find yourself feeling like this family happened to you, instead of it being a conscious choice you made, then take a moment to step back. Check your triggers. Check your sense of self. No matter how lost, weak, small, or helpless you feel, remind yourself that you are an adult who has the power to shift the dynamics, and that you are always able to change how you relate to the reality that is your new family situation. The children, and your spouse, will respond to your sense of self confidence, and the whole family will feel more stable and safe when you are able to reconnect with your own strength. When you are rocked, reach out for support- ask your partner, your friends, your community to help you find the strength to be with what is, and to change what is needed. Self Directed Investor Talk: Alternative Asset Investing through Self-Directed IRA's & Solo 401k's
If you’re thinking of buying a rental property right now, STOP! Do you know what you should ACTUALLY pay for that property? I’m Bryan Ellis. I’ll tell you how to know if you’re overpaying RIGHT NOW in Episode #112 ---------- Welcome, my friends, back to another exciting edition of the podcast of record for self directed investors the world over! Let’s talk about rental properties, shall we? Many of you have the impression that I disapprove of owning rental property, or that I somehow disapprove of the notion of “turnkey” rental properties, in which you buy a rental property from a company who also stocks the house with a tenant and selects a property manager so that all of that stuff is in place without your having to do anything. Both of those things are wrong. I absolutely approve of owning rental property. And I absolutely approve of solid turnkey rental deals. But let’s be careful to pay the right prices, ok? Remember: The core value of a self-directed investor is to RESPECT YOUR OWN CAPITAL… and the most basic, fundamental way to do that is to NEVER, EVER pay too much for an investment. So what is the right price to pay for a rental property? Let’s start with what ISN’T the right price. Do this: Before you buy your next rental property, call up a real estate agent in the area. Ask them what that property would sell for on the open market. Whatever they tell you is a good approximation of the retail value of that property. The right price for you to pay for a rental ISN’T the retail value. You must pay LESS than that. My friends, remember this: you will be successful primarily as a result of getting good deals. What makes for a good deal? Property bought below it’s retail value. How much below? I’d say 10% below is a good starting place. 15-20% or more is better. But what does NOT make any sense is to pay full retail value for that property. Paying retail is for bush league investors who don’t know what they don’t know. That’s not you… now you know better. But I’d like to give you a warning. Many people selling turnkey rental property will try to confuse you by basing their pricing on something called cap rate, or capitalization ratio. Honestly, if you hear the word “cap rate” in connection with single family houses, somebody is probably trying to confuse you. It’s VERY, VERY easy – repeat, VERY easy – to do some financial magic such that it looks like your “cap rate” is very high, at 12-15% or more. They want to do that because it’s easy to justify charging higher prices for the property when you perceive the rate of return to be stronger. My friends: Repeat after me: Cap rate doesn’t matter. What DOES matter is the REAL VALUE – what would the house sell for on the retail market? And then, you ALWAYS pay LESS than that number! Folks, this is one of those places where your intelligence actually puts you at a disadvantage. If you’re like 95% of my audience, then you’re a smart, successful person who is probably an engineer or a sales person or a computer programmer or a physician or some other type of professional who is very good at your job, and it’s likely you have a high income. It’s also likely you’re not a real estate expert, and that’s OK! Here’s the thing: Like me, and like everyone else, you simply don’t know what you don’t know… and like me, you may be inclined to think that because you don’t see any holes in the argument being put in front of you, that there are, therefore, no holes in the argument. And buying a turnkey rental property presents a fertile ground for you to be confused while falsely feeling very confident. What happens is that you are redirected to focus on other issues like CAP RATE or the potential for tax savings through depreciation or discussions about the difference between “nominal” and “actual” dollars, and of course, why real estate is such a great hedge against inflation. My friends, all of that is interesting stuff, but it’s not relevant at the point of your portfolio balance. All of that stuff exists in EVERY real estate deal… not just the one they’re trying to sell you. Can I show you how I might evaluate a deal? This, by the way, is a real deal… it’s actually available right now. So this is a little house in a strategically VERY attractive area of the country. The property is solidly worth $95,000, arguably even $100,000… and that’s based on comparing it to other houses in the area, not based on any cap rate-related sleight of hand. It’s totally rent-ready and rents for $850. Here’s a really simple analysis: $850 rent means $10,200 in gross income per year. By the time we factor out property taxes, insurance and property management, you’ll net $8,186 per year. So what’s your ROI? Well, that’s the interesting thing. If you’re buying this from a typical turnkey rental company, you’re going to pay – repeat after me – FULL RETAIL or higher. In this case, that would mean $100,000 or more. Not here. You’ll get this property for $80,000 – a full $15,000 to $20,000 below it’s REAL value. And based on that price of $80,000, your cash-on-cash yield will be 10.2%! Folks, that’s cash-on-cash of 10.2% - and that doesn’t even include the substantial EQUITY position that you’ll have from day 1! Now, let’s be clear: That’s the pre-maintenance profit. There WILL be maintenance costs. Likely less to begin with and more as the property ages. And I’ll tell you… you’d be VERY wise to set aside the entire first year of cash flow for use as rental reserves. That’s an aggressive approach… but it’s one that will make sure you don’t find yourself in trouble. So what makes this deal a good deal? Well, it’s a very attractive price – well below retail value – the cash flow is very solid… and… it’s in a great, appreciating area! This one is really attractive. I think that buying a turnkey property 10% below retail is a really good start… but when they’re 15-20% below retail like this one… well… it’s a no-brainer. And do you see that I didn’t have to try to confuse you with discussions about tax benefits or inflation rates… and a really big one – I didn’t try to tell you that equity doesn’t matter, and that you should look ONLY at your results in terms of cash flow. Whenever you hear that one, my friends, you should RUN. Sure, you get tax benefits with this property, just like every other property in America. Sure, this property is a hedge against inflation, just like the property you’re considering from a turnkey property provider. But the difference is – this is ACTUALLY a really good deal… and you simply don’t need a degree in finance to understand that. Remember the S3 Investment Criteria, my friends: Simple. Safe. Strong. This investment is SIMPLE… it’s a rental in an appreciating and growing market! It’s SAFE… you’ve got a solid equity position and very good cash flow from DAY #1. And it’s STRONG – strong cash flow, strong equity, strong market. This one, I believe, makes a LOT of sense. Incidentally, this property is a real deal and really available. It came across my desk this morning. We only get about 10-15 deals like this a month where you get a GREAT cash-flowing rental property with a vetted tenant and solid property management… along with a GREAT below-market price. In fact, many of our deals are so inexpensive, that you’re getting the house BELOW what it costs to build, and you’re getting the land, effectively for FREE! So, those deals tend to go very, very quickly. Are you interested in getting into some GREAT turnkey rental properties that actually MAKE SENSE… Well, my friends, I’ve got them! If you’ve got at least $100,000 of capital – which is about where most of these properties are priced – and you’d like to be on the Self Directed Investor rental Top Picks notification list, just text the word TOPPICKS to 33444. That’s just one word, with no spaces. Text the word TOPPICKS to 33444 – but only if you’d like to be notified as we receive access to great turnkey rental properties you can buy well BELOW retail cost… in other words, truly SMART deals! My friends, invest wisely today…and live well forever! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Red Sox split with the Seattle Mariners over the weekend, even though the Sox received their best starting pitching of the season. Bobby Valentine announced that he may stick with the six-man rotation after the All Star Break, which Alex feels is nothing but a good thing. A little competition never hurt anybody... Alex also spends several minutes lavishing praise upon Felix Hernandez, and even conjures up a scenario where he is traded to the Red Sox this season (seriously). Other stories from the weekend, David Ortiz's selection to the All Star team, and more is talked about too. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex recaps the AL East standings, where the Orioles and Rays are both falling. Jim Thome was acquired by Baltimore over the weekend, and Alex explains why that is a "no-lose" trade for the Orioles. The plummeting Phillies and Dodgers, as well as several thoughts on the All Star Game are mentioned as well. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. There WILL be a show this Thursday, July 5th. Happy 4th of July! Enjoy this summer week.
