This week co-host Chris Teague and host Jack Nerad were up to their eyeballs in modern luxury. Teague had the honor of testing the newest model from the prestigious Genesis brand, while Nerad took the wheel of the performance version of the brand's dedicated battery-electric SUV. Both were equipped with the top-rated powertrains in each model's lineup, and both provided impressive eye candy both inside and out. The 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe Chris tested features a high-performance powertrain—a "twin-charged" V6 engine with both a turbocharger and an “electric supercharger,” delivering 409 horsepower. Inside, it swaps the standard GV80's three-row layout for a sportier two-row cabin, highlighted by a sweeping 27.0-inch digital display and racy design touches like a flat-bottomed steering wheel and metal-accented pedals. Nerad tested the 2025 Genesis GV60 Performance AWD, a small, battery-electric SUV built for enthusiasts, featuring dual motors that produce up to 429 horsepower—or 483 horsepower in Boost Mode. Powered by a 77.4 kWh battery and riding on Hyundai's E-GMP platform, it pairs sharp performance with high-end comfort, offering Nappa leather seats, a 12.3-inch digital cockpit, Bang & Olufsen audio, and cutting-edge tech like facial recognition and fingerprint authentication. With sleek touches like 21-inch wheels and a Vision Roof, it delivers both dynamic driving and premium convenience in a zero-emissions package. But at $72,000 as-tested is it a smart luxury-vehicle buy? Jack and Chris will offer their opinions. We have a primo guest this week. Bob Broderdorf is the chief executive officer of the Jeep brand and he has also served in top positions with Ram and Dodge. With the American car market in turmoil recently, he will describe how the legendary Jeep brand is making its way forward. We think you'll enjoy the discussion he had with host Jack Nerad. In the news this week, Nissan has announced some new products for North America as it tries to shore up its position here in the United States. We'll have details. Hyundai has just announced that it is making a huge investment in U.S. manufacturing and parts operations, and it includes the establishment of new plant that is likely the first in decades. We'll have more on that. Porsche is upping its tech game, perhaps in response to the BMW announcement we told you about last week. And Toyota has announced a new racing series that might get Chris into the cockpit on the race course. We'll tell you all about that coming up. So we have a lot of show for you this week. It isn't Pi day if we don't mention it, and we are excited to ask Michael Wood what his favorite “pie” is. Today, we are all in the EV space chatting about broadening lineups for Hyundai, VW, and Jaguar.Hyundai is gearing up to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the IONIQ 9, a first-of-its-kind three-row electric SUV from the automaker. The IONIQ 9, Hyundai's first three-row electric SUV, follows the success of the IONIQ 5 and 6, with the IONIQ 5 ranking as the sixth top-selling EV in the US last year.Utilizing Hyundai's E-GMP platform, the IONIQ 9 promises exceptional space and performance, possibly offering more rear legroom than luxury competitors like the Cadillac Escalade.Set to start production in the first half of the year, with US sales expected in mid-2025, the IONIQ 9 will be manufactured at Hyundai's new EV Metaplant in Georgia, aiming to qualify for the $7,500 EV tax credit. The brand is expected to unveil the model in June.Volkswagen, once embroiled in the Dieselgate scandal, is now at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, embarking on its most ambitious product launch to date on its way to a 100% EV future.VW's transformation into an EV powerhouse is marked by the announcement of over 30 new models across its brands, aiming for a record year in 2024."We will invest in our last-generation of ICE vehicles,” which are especially key for hybrids, board member and CFO Arno Antlitz said. Then, he said, “These investments are going to be phased out.”In 2023, the VW Group saw deliveries rise 10% globally with an operating profit of €22.6 billion (about $25 billion.)Jaguar is embracing an all-electric future with plans to exclusively produce electric vehicles by 2025, including luxury SUVs. This bold transition marks the end of the line for its internal combustion engine (ICE) models as Jaguar seeks a fresh start with a trio of new electric vehicles on a brand-new platform.Jaguar will discontinue all current ICE and EV models, including the I-Pace, by 2024 and 3 new electric vehicles, including SUVs, will replace the existing lineup, signaling a major shift towards sustainability and innovation. The introduction of a 600 bhp electric four-seat GT car, comparable to the Porsche Taycan, will kickstart Jaguar's new era, with indicative pricing around $127,000 and a range nearing 400 miles on U.S. EPA methods."The most powerful and impressive Jaguar ever produced" signals the brand's aim to compete in the high-performance electric sedan market against rivals like the Audi e-tron GT.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Did you know: electrons are powering the latest cars tested on the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, and also everything around you? We're slowly coming to terms with that as Benjamin and Sami try out some new EVs and hybrid vehicles. First up on the show, (beyond the food tangent that infrequently occurs on the podcast) is the 2023 Genesis GV60 and its oh so tempting BOOST button. Benjamin shares his thoughts on the Korean luxury EV, and why he hasn't gotten his E-GMP badge yet. To show that times are really changing, Benjamin even warms up to some of the biometric features found in the Genesis - a discussion you won't want to miss. Then Sami jumps into action to talk about the recently updated 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid. As large sedans lose their fun factor, Sami seems convinced that the Accord is managing the transition to comfy, family vehicle, with impressive fuel efficiency. At just over $30k this Honda should work for a lot of people, but time will tell if it maintains its popularity in this Crossover-crazy world. Speaking of crazy, if you were worried about something, would being forced to go into an escape room help? Don't miss our wacky news analysis coming straight from VW's recently concerned employees. Listen, rate, subscribe and do all that fun stuff!

PANASONIC PLANNING ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERY PLANT IN U.S. - Japan's Panasonic Corp. is looking to purchase land in the United States for a massive factory to make a new type of electric vehicle battery for Tesla, public broadcaster NHK reported on Friday. - Panasonic is looking at building the several billion dollar factory in either Oklahoma or Kansas for their proximity to Texas, where Tesla is preparing a new EV plant, NHK reported. NHK gave no timeline for Panasonic's U.S. project. - A long-time Tesla supplier, Panasonic has already announced plans to begin mass-producing the new type of lithium-ion battery for Tesla before the end of March, 2024 with two new production lines at its western Japanese plant in Wakayama. Original Source : https://www.autonews.com/automakers-suppliers/panasonic-planning-electric-vehicle-battery-plant-us KIA AIMS TO SELL 1.2 MILLION EVS IN 2030 - Following in Hyundai's footsteps, Kia has now also presented its strategic roadmap for accelerating its electrification ambitions by 2030. To achieve the sales target, at least two new electric models are to be introduced each year. - Kia assumes – based on 160,000 BEV sales this year – that it will already sell 807,000 BEVs in 2026 and then 1.2 million battery-electric cars in 2030. - With the 1.87 million electric cars Hyundai is targeting, according to its strategy update unveiled the day before, Hyundai-Kia would have sales of more than three million electric cars in 2030. - While Hyundai has announced further development of its current EV platform E-GMP for 2025, Kia does not mention this Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA). Hyundai plans to rely not only on standardized e-motors and chassis designs, but also on batteries with cell-to-pack technology from CATL, which does not require modules. In its announcement, Kia refers to everything from the upcoming EV9 – the large E-SUV is still based on the current E-GMP. - Kia announces production of “small and mid-sized electric vehicles” in Europe starting in 2025 – this will likely be located at the Zilina plant in Slovakia Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/03/03/kia-aims-to-sell-1-2-million-bevs-in-2030/ KIA AUTOMODE TO LAUNCH IN 2023, COMING TO EV9 SUV FIRST - Korean car manufacturer Kia is to launch an autonomous driving mode for select vehicles from 2023 on. - AutoMode uses a range of proprietary autonomous driving technologies, which include Highway Driving Pilot to enable driver-less travel on motorways and highways. It will feature first in next year's Kia EV9 SUV and, by 2026, will be available in all new models launched in major markets. - AutoMode will receive regular over-the-air updates as new features are developed. Kia will also enhance and improve the system with the goal of eventually offering fully autonomous technology. But unlike the E-GMP, which has different battery systems for each vehicle it supports, the IMA will have a standardized battery. The motors (of which there will be five types) and key chassis components will also be standardized, all helping to improve production efficiencies. - the platform will suit all segments and will be used for both passenger vehicles and purpose-built vehicles, such as delivery vehicles and shuttles for self-driving taxi services. - From 2025, Genesis will only launch EVs. - the redesigned Genesis G90 will offer a self-driving capability at Level 3 on the SAE scale in some markets by the second half of 2022 Original Source : https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1135204_hyundai-brands-to-use-new-ev-platform-with-standardized-batteries-and-motors MERCEDES EQS SUV SPIED UP CLOSE TESTING IN CALIFORNIA - The EQS is currently the most technologically advanced EV from the Stuttgart-based firm and it will soon morph into a high-riding EQS SUV. We've seen it testing on a number of occasions and a new video shows us a prototype on a parking lot in South California. - This new sighting of the model doesn't give us a look under the camouflage, though we get a very quick look inside the cabin. For now, everything remains heavily camouflaged - The EQS will join the already existing EQA, EQB, and EQC, all built on modified platforms for combustion cars. The range-topping EV SUV will be assembled in the United States at the Tuscaloosa plant from 2022 along with the smaller EQE SUV. - The only piece of confirmed information available so far is that Mercedes estimates the range between charges will be up to 373 miles (600 kilometers), depending on the configuration. Organizers say one of the big-ticket items that car enthusiasts will come to check out is the Fully-electric Ford F-150 Lightning. - The newest attraction this year is the e-Track, the show's first-ever multi-brand electric vehicle test track. This involves turning the Group's largest engineering unit with 11,500 employees into a pace-setter for the Volkswagen brand's transformation into a technology company. - The main emphasis is on a complete redesign of the development process, making it interdisciplinary, focused squarely on software, customer requirements and SSP, Volkswagen's electric platform of the future, and centered on functions rather than individual components. - This is expected to cut development time by about a quarter, increase the speed of new software releases and also significantly accelerate manufacturing processes in production. - In the 1990s, vehicle development centered primarily on components. As functions and electronics were added in the early 2000s, connectivity began to play an increasingly important role. Now and in the future, the vehicle must be viewed as one system in the customer's entire ecosystem and communicate seamlessly with all systems outside the vehicle. - vehicle projects will be completed in 40 months instead of 54 months as before Original Source : http://www.automobilsport.com/cars-tuning--37/cars-tuning--37,234746,Volkswagen-realigns-Technical-Development-shorter-product-cycles-and-faster-digital-offerings,news.htm AUDI REVEALS UPDATED Q4 E-TRON EV WITH FASTER CHARGING AND UPDATED INTERIOR Original Source : https://www.aol.co.uk/motoring/audi-reveals-updated-q4-e-132743050.html 2022 FIAT E-ULYSSE DEBUTS AS AN ELECTRIC MINIVAN FOR EUROPE Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/571006/fiat-e-ulysse-electric-mpv/ GLOBAL BATTERY DEMAND TO INCREASE 15-FOLD AS EV BOOM TAKES OFF Original Source : https://oilprice.com/Energy/Crude-Oil/Global-Battery-Demand-To-Increase-15-Fold-As-EV-Boom-Takes-Off.html TESLA FEARS HAVING TO SHUT DOWN SERVICE CENTERS IN OKLAHOMA AS NEW BILL PASSES COMMITTEE Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/03/03/tesla-fears-having-to-shut-down-service-centers-oklahoma-new-bill-passes-committee TESLA ROADSTER MAKES HISTORY WITH $250K SALE Original Source : https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/02/25884348/tesla-roadster-makes-history-with-250k-sale-heres-the-worlds-most-expensive-tesla THE ARC ONE IS AN ELECTRIC BOAT WITH A BATTERY PACK THREE TIMES THE SIZE OF TESLA'S Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/3/22958830/arc-electric-boat-pre-proudction-photo-video-battery BYD SELLS 88,283 NEVS IN FEB, UP 752.6% YEAR-ON-YEAR Original Source : https://cnevpost.com/2022/03/03/byd-sells-88283-nevs-in-feb-up-752-6-year-on-year QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What's the best looking EV on the market right now? NEW 2022 GENESIS GV60 CONFIRMED FOR LAUNCH IN EUROPE THIS YEAR | AUTO EXPRESS - Genesis, the Hyundai Group's premium spin-off brand, has announced that its pure-electric GV60 coupe-SUV will go on sale in Europe later this year. - Key rivals include the Audi Q4 e-tron, Tesla Model Y and Jaguar I-Pace. - The Genesis GV60 is built on the same E-GMP underpinnings as the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. It's powered by a 77.4kWh battery pack, which offers a maximum range of 280 miles with the entry-level, single-motor, rear-wheel drive model. - Prices for all three models in the SUV's line-up will be confirmed closer to the car's European launch date. - At the top of the GV60 line-up, there's an even faster Sport Plus variant. It shares the same dual-motor powertrain as the Kia EV6 GT, which means it produces 429bhp and 605Nm of torque. Genesis says this model will sprint from 0–62mph in four seconds flat - Boost Mode. It's activated by a button on the steering wheel, and gives the EV an extra 54bhp and 95Nm of torque to improve overtaking performance. - Drift Mode, which sounds a little out of place on an electric SUV. Genesis hasn't gone into too much detail about how the system works, but we know it alters the torque split of the all-wheel drive system to send more power to the rear motor. - 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes, while the car's maximum AC charging performance (for home charging, for example) has been increased from 7.2kW to 11kW, compared to its Hyundai and Kia-badged siblings. - The infra-red camera picks up the user's face and automatically loads their pre-saved seat and mirror positions, infotainment and head-up display preferences. - The GV60 can also wirelessly receive upgrades for systems such as the suspension, brakes, steering wheel, driver assistance technology and the central brain that controls the car's electric motors and charging system. "As a result, we've made replacements available to Bolt EV owners who were in our high priority groups." - Flores said once a dealer receives a Bolt EV or EUV made after April 4, they can sell those vehicles immediately. Recalled vehicles on dealer lots are on stop-sale and will need to have their battery modules replaced before they can be sold. - Orion will build the electric versions of the light-duty 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups alongside the Bolts when the expansion is complete late next year. As standard it has 617 horsepower and 701 pound-feet (950 Nm), but you can have that increased to 677 horsepower and 738 pound-feet (1,000 Nm) with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package. - With the pack, the EQE 53's sprint time to 60 mph drops from 3.4 seconds to 3.2 seconds and top speed is upped from 137 mph to 149 mph. Powering all of this performance is a 90.6 kWh battery pack that is made up of ten modules totalling 360 pouch-type cells whose chemistry is less reliant on cobalt. - The EQE 53 can be charged at a maximum rate of 170 kW, and according to the manufacturer, this will add 112 miles (180 km) of range in 15 minutes. Its WLTP range (EPA numbers not yet available) is up to 518 km (321 miles). Original Source : https://www.evo.co.uk/polestar/202256/2024-polestar-5-details-emerge-british-engineering-base-established-for-porsche 2024 POLESTAR 5 WILL DEBUT THE BRAND'S FIRST IN-HOUSE EV PLATFORM | THE DRIVE - Polestar says the 5 will boast segment-leading handling, rigidity, and safety thanks to this new in-house chassis. Torsional rigidity is supposedly higher than a "traditional two-seat sports- or supercar" while the weight is apparently lower than that of smaller cars - What's more, a new manufacturing process lets the company build the Polestar 5's platform and body simultaneously, cutting down on the time it takes to get a car on the road. - Not only does this in-house platform enable the automaker to build the Polestar 5 quicker and have the car be stiffer and lighter, but it has also allowed the upcoming production EV to stick close to the Precept concept when it comes to aesthetics. Not a bad thing, given how good the Precept looks. - While the Polestar 5 sedan is set to debut for the 2024 model year, the South Carolina-built Polestar 3 crossover is going to launch sometime this year. We therefore don't know if the final production interpretation of the model will look like this prototype or if it will even more closely resemble the stunning Prophecy concept that previewed it." asks InsideEVs: "while previous prototypes were spotted with cameras instead of regular side mirrors, these newer prototypes featured the latter. Hyundai is building the Ioniq 6 on it E-GMP dedicated electric vehicle platform and thus it will surely share many components with the Ioniq 5. However, the largest available battery will be bigger than the Ioniq 5's 72.6 kWh pack and it could be closer to 100 kWh (with around 300 miles of range), according to some rumors." VOLKSWAGEN REVEALS PHEV PLANS WITH >100 KM RANGE ""In the course of a presentation of its current plug-in hybrid models, Volkswagen has given an outlook on its upcoming PHEV strategy. A new generation of plug-in hybrid drives is expected to be used from 2023." says electrive :"the battery capacity and thus the electric range are to increase significantly – the latter to around 100 kilometres. Volkswagen's PHEVs will in future have a fast-charging option with a CCS connection, enabling significantly faster charging processes than with the existing single-phase onboard chargers with only 3.6 kW charging power. Olaf Scholz, of the center-left Social Democrats, appealed to the environmentally minded Greens and pro-business Free Democrats to back a three-way coalition following his narrow victory in Sunday's election." reports Bloomberg: "Just a few hours later, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess took to Twitter to sketch out the car giant's vision for a new government. His 10-point wish list includes calls to expand renewables, curb coal, raise the price of CO2 and scrap subsidies for gasoline and diesel fuel. VW's CEO openly trying to speed up the demise of the internal combustion engine would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. the SPD has repeatedly called on the industry to be more ambitious when it comes to phasing out the combustion engine. The party was instrumental in denying the industry's request for a scrapping bonus for older gasoline and diesel vehicles at the height of the pandemic last year." POWER CUTS MAY STIFLE CHINESE DEMAND FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES "China's power cuts could put a dent in the booming electric vehicle (EV) sector as the suspension of charging stations in parts of the country keeps some battery-powered cars off the roads, analysts said." according to South China Morning Post: "The power blackouts in more than 10 provinces across the mainland are likely to further sap drivers' appetite for EVs in regions where their take-up is already low. “In northeast China, electric cars have been greeted with a lukewarm response for many years,” said Zhang Fan, a car insurance broker in Jilin province. “The power cuts could further siphon off buying interest in electricity-powered vehicles.”" https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3151085/chinas-switch-financing-overseas-renewable-energy-projects CHINA'S CARMAKERS ARE MAKING CHEAPER ELECTRIC VEHICLES "As the world enters the era of the electric vehicle (EV), are we about to see a sea change in the identity and makeup of Europe's streets? The quality, and, more importantly, the affordability of Chinese EVs is becoming a situation that is harder for European manufacturers to ignore with each passing year, and it could be just a matter of time before the market becomes flooded with imports from China." says Euronews.com: "According to a report from automotive data analysis firm Jato Dynamics, the average price of a new electric car in China since 2011 has fallen from €41,800 to €22,100. While China's significant manufacturing capabilities have never been in doubt, the question was whether it would be able to innovate to the same degree as its Western counterparts. That question has been answered in the form of their batteries and the technology they are able to implement inside their vehicles (although parts of the industry are still subsidised by the Chinese government)." HYUNDAI IONIQ 6 DELAYED "The Ioniq 6, Hyundai's second bespoke electric car, has been spotted out on the road for the first time, but reports from Korea suggest the final design will change substantially" reports Felix Page for Autocar. "According to the Korean Economic Daily, the launch of the Ioniq 6 has been pushed back to mid-2022 to allow the body to be lengthened by 20mm, the bumpers and lights to be restyled and the battery to be upsized from 72.6kWh to 77.4kWh. " "The EV's belated launch has also been attributed to a delayed overhaul of the Asan factory where it will be produced. That site currently builds the combustion-engined Sonata saloon and needs refitting to build cars based on the E-GMP platform." "The 77kWh battery pack is already available in sibling brand Kia's new EV6 crossover, which suggests the Ioniq 6 could be more closely related to that car technically, in line with its performance billing." The company acknowledged that its fast-growing clean-energy business - including its solar, EV-charging and wind ventures - continues to lose money. BP does not expect profits from those businesses until at least 2025. "For bp pulse, that means operating 70,000 charging points by 2030, up from 11,000 now." In addition, LG is adding capacity to provide more cells to GM. As a result, replacement battery modules will begin shipping to dealers as soon as mid-October. The root cause of the rare circumstances that could cause a battery fire is two manufacturing defects known as a torn anode and a folded separator, both of which need to be present in the same battery cell. LG has implemented new manufacturing processes and has worked with GM to review and enhance its quality assurance programs to provide confidence in its batteries moving forward. LG will institute these new processes in other facilities that will provide cells to GM in the future." “GM will continue to prioritize Chevy Bolt EV and EUV customers whose batteries were manufactured during specific build timeframes where GM believes battery defects appear to be clustered. The company has established a notification process that will inform affected customers when their replacement modules will be available.” The good news for owners is that the new batteries will include an extended battery 8-year/100,000-mile limited warranty." Even though it's fully camouflaged, one can easily notice the large multi-spoke wheels with a two-tone look that appear to be borrowed from the larger AMG EQS." says Motor1.com "The amped-up EQE rides low to the ground on low-profile tires and hides a bigger spoiler at the back. It's starting out with the Pioneer, a go-anywhere brick outhouse of a thing designed for monster range figures under the most extreme circumstances on Earth." " Fering has gone with a lithium-titanate-oxide (LTO) battery pack. These have advantages and drawbacks; they're renowned for extremely long life cycles, they can charge quickly and they work from -40 to 60 °C" "the Pioneer can only go about 80 km (50 miles) on pure, silent, zero-emissions battery power. e Pioneer also carries a 70-kW (94-hp), 800cc, three-cylinder biodiesel combustion generator to keep the batteries topped up. Running constantly at its most efficient speed, the combustion engine is capable of delivering impressive fuel efficiency around 50 miles per gallon. With long-range tanks fitted, Fering estimates a whopping 7,000-km (4,350-mile) range between fuel stops." "Drive comes from a pair of electric motors at the front and rear axles, offering some 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque. " "Fering, founded by former McLaren Head of Advanced Concepts Ben Scott-Geddes, has got its first prototype up and running, and it's undergoing a series of tests both by Fering and by early customer organizations evaluating it for various use cases. The company says it's targeting the first half of 2022 for the start of serial production." However, Schäfer says the volume model, which has so far been offered as a combustion engine and plug-in hybrid, will not be launched as a purely electric vehicle until after 2025." "Homendy had harsh words for Tesla's use of the term “full self-driving,” which she called “misleading and irresponsible,” adding that Tesla “has clearly misled numerous people to misuse and abuse technology.” The NTSB can conduct investigations and make recommendations, but has no enforcement authority." "In May, Tesla's director of Autopilot software had told the California Department of Motor Vehicles that Musk overstated the capabilities of the company's advanced driver assist system, a precursor to FSD. In February 2020, the NTSB found Tesla's Autopilot driver assistance system was one of the possible causes in a fatal 2018 crash, stating that the driver, who was playing a mobile game while using Autopilot, was overly confident in Autopilot's capabilities." FIRST VW ID.4 ELECTRIC SUV PRE-PRODUCTION UNITS ROLL OFF THE LINE AT CHATTANOOGA FACTORY - The first VW ID.4 electric SUV pre-production units have rolled off the assembly line at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory. - Scott Keogh, president and CEO at Volkswagen Group of America, has confirmed that the first pre-production units have rolled off the assembly line. He shared images in a LinkedIn post: - That moment certainly came during my last visit to the Volkswagen Chattanooga assembly plant in Chattanooga, TN. While I was there to tour our electric vehicle expansion at the plant, I had the pleasure of watching a pre-production version of the VW ID.4 come down the line with Thomas Du Plessis. This early model is a way for us to validate the build process, components, and procedures in advance of full assembly which is scheduled to begin next year. Just as important, it represents our $800 million dollar investment in EV assembly for the region – and our commitment to the high-tech jobs that will keep this facility humming. - VW most recently launched the ID.4 AWD Pro electric SUV in the US starting at just $36,175 with incentives. Today, consumers in China can buy a brand new EV for as little as €3,700. In stark contrast, the average retail price for an EV in the US continues to rise faster than any other major global market and now stands at €36,200, up from €26,200 in 2011. - . In May 2021, EVs were on average 52% more expensive than ICE cars in the UK, and 54% more expensive in the Netherlands. In Germany, the average retail price of an EV is €39,755 compared to €36,979 for ICE vehicles. Norway is the only exception – the average retail price for EVs is €44,500 compared to €53,000 for ICE cars. TESLA MAY BEGIN SOURCING BATTERIES FROM BYD - Tesla plans to use blade batteries from BYD with LFP cells from the second quarter of 2022, according to rumours from China. Tesla electric cars with BYD batteries are already in the “C-sample test phase”. - The rumours come from the portal cls.cn, which refers to information from the Financial Associated Press. - BYD will “supply Tesla with blade batteries in the second quarter of next year”. BYD would not comment on the information to the portal. - Tesla relies on LFP cells from CATL for the standard range versions of the Model 3 and Model Y produced in China. - Either Tesla wants to test and establish an alternative supplier for the standard range models here, or it could be the planned new entry-level model. This model, preemptively called the ‘Model 2', is being developed in China - BYD uses the Blade battery in its Han EV electric sedan and Tang EV electric SUV, among others – but it was announced from the start that external customers would also be supplied. - According to PushEVs, BYD is supposed to achieve 140 Wh/kg at pack level. With the LFP cells that CATL supplies to Tesla, on the other hand, only 125 Wh/kg are said to be possible. Expected to be called the Genesis GV60, the vehicle will be e a more luxurious alternative to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, and based on this photo, it's also going to be a bit more conventional looking too. - The rear end of the GV60 has the same fastback look as the EV6 and it also has an interesting detail in the C-pillar. It looks like the chrome trim that follows the upper part of the side glass dips and makes a V shape behind the rear door - this is quite an unusual detail and it looks like the inside of the V will be black to make it seem part of the rear glass. This is the first time the Arrival Van has completed an autonomous drive of this kind, which now paves the way for road testing. - Last month, Arrival received an order for five of its electrified Arrival Buses from the City of Anaheim, California, which followed the company's news in May that it had partnered with Uber to design an Arrival Car specifically for rideshare drivers. - Arrival shared news of a successful live demonstration of its ADS within an Arrival Van at a fully functional parcel depot in the UK. The Arrival Van successfully completed all operations a commercial fleet driver would perform on an average day, but did so autonomously. - Max Kumskoy, Arrival's head of advanced driver assistance and automated driving systems, elaborates: At Arrival, we are building supplementary technologies that will help drivers. Depot maneuvers are the most accident-prone parts of a worker's shift and with our technology, we hope to introduce greater safety by removing human driving errors happening in confined environments. We are starting with a fixed controlled environment in the depot, where we are truly able to test and validate our technology. We can then understand how it will operate on public roads, in our vehicles, and how it can be implemented worldwide. After a great run at the Hill Climb, it headed to Laguna Seca to develop the car even further. The UP Plaid was so heavily modified that it no longer counts as a production car, but regardless, it set a damn impressive new EV lap record of 1:28.213 with Randy Pobst at the wheel. In case you're wondering, that's within one second of the track's production car lap record, which was also set by Pobst in a McLaren Senna. - The vehicle Pobst drove is known as "Dark Helmet" - There's a new steering wheel, too, so no comedy yoke. NEW 2021 KIA EV6 BOASTS UP TO 328 MILES OF RANGE - Kia has confirmed more specifications for its new EV6 electric crossover, with the bespoke electric car to offer a maximum of up to 328 miles of range from a full charge. Kia EV6 prices start from £40,895, with first deliveries expected to arrive in October, while the range will consist of three trim levels of two drivetrains. Every UK model also comes as standard with the company's long-range 77.4kWh battery, rather than the entry-level 58kWh unit offered in other markets. - Thanks to the new E-GMP underpinnings, which features the latest 800-volt electrical architecture, the EV6 can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes, while maximum DC rapid charging capability stands at 239kW. As a world first, the EV6 also has the capability to transform a power feed from a more common 400-volt rapid charger to 800 volts thanks to a clever motor and inverter set-up, allowing the EV6 to charge at its maximum capacity. - To help boost range the EV6 features six different regenerative braking settings. This includes completely off, modes 1 to 3, ‘i-Pedal' – which allows maximum energy harvesting and brings the car to a stop without touching the brakes, allowing one-pedal driving – and an auto setting. - The Kia EV6's wheelbase is 2,900mm long despite the EV6's relatively compact dimensions, pushing the wheels close to the model's extremities to maximise space inside. - Boot space stands at 520 litres, rising to 1,300 litres with the rear seats folded down. There are also an additional 52 litres of storage space at the front in rear-drive models - Kia claims that with more than 35 percent charge left in the battery, the EV6 can also tow loads weighing up to 1,600kg, which is strong for an electric car. Details are still slim. For instance, it's unclear where it would initially open up, which automakers have reached agreements with Tesla and whether Tesla owners would get priority. However, Musk did finally attach a timeline of sorts by noting this would kick off before the end of 2021. - Way back in 2014, Musk said he'd be willing to open up the designs in order to build a standard that can be used interchangeably across the industry. - Tesla has its own connector, which means automakers would have to provide or sell an adapter to owners of its EVs to access the Supercharger network. It's a different story in Europe. Tesla uses the CCS direct current connector in Europe, making this the most likely region for Tesla to open up first.
Jim Hackett, President and CEO: "It's a question that when maybe a year ago, we started to see lines starting to arrange around make versus buy, own versus source, so we had a deep discussion about this. I've met with a number of the people that you know that are in the supply side of this. And it was our estimation, in fact, our whole team went through a really deep dive on this six months ago, that the supply chain has ramped up since Elon built his Gigafactory. And so there's plenty there that does not warrant us to migrate our capital into owning our own factory. There's no advantage in the ownership in terms of cost or sourcing as what Ford can draw on." https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2020/07/31/ford-f-q2-2020-earnings-call-transcript.aspx " Ford Motor plans to invest $185 million into a new battery lab as a step toward manufacturing its own battery cells for electric vehicles, the company announced Tuesday. The funds will go toward constructing Ford Ion Park, a “pilot facility” for production that’s expected to open by the end of next year outside Detroit. The planned 200,000-square-foot lab is designed to accelerate development of the technologies as the company plans to “eventually manufacture” new battery cells and batteries" writes CNBC: "The company currently purchases cells from suppliers such as South Korea-based SK Innovation. Ford’s new facility will not be a full battery cell production facility like Tesla has or like General Motors has announced as part of $4.6 billion investments in two U.S. battery cell production plants with LG Energy Solution. Ford is hiring 150 people for Ion Park and has already brought on some employees." https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/27/ford-moves-to-make-electric-vehicle-battery-cells.html Ford Authority said: "The Ford Ion Park team also is exploring better integration and innovation opportunities across all aspects of the value chain – from mines to recycling – working with all teams within Ford, including experts at Ford’s new Battery Benchmarking and Test Laboratory, Ford Customer Service Division, plus key suppliers and partners." The continue: "This 200,000 square-foot learning lab will include pilot-scale equipment for electrode, cell, and array design and manufacturing and will use state-of-the-art technology to pilot new manufacturing techniques that will allow Ford to quickly scale breakthrough battery cell designs with novel materials once the company vertically integrates battery cells and batteries" https://fordauthority.com/2021/04/ford-ion-park-revealed-as-new-battery-research-and-development-center-video/ THE WILD WAYS GM'S GETTING THE LYRIQ AND HUMMER EV TO MARKET SO QUICKLY "Reservations for the $59,990 2023 Cadillac Lyriq will begin in September. Meanwhile, deliveries of the vehicle are set for the first quarter of 2022. The original timeline saw the Lyriq going on sale at the end of 2022." so how did GM engineers knock 9 months off the timeframe? asks MotorTrend: "Credit a mix of cost-cutting necessity, a need for speed, the flexibility of a new electric vehicle architecture, and the realization that greater reliance on virtual tools can get the job done. The Lyriq is part of a new wave of electric vehicles from GM on its new BEV3 electric vehicle architecture, now referred to as the Ultium platform because it uses Ultium batteries developed by the automaker with LG Chem. The first Ultium-based vehicle to hit the market will be the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup this fall. The Lyriq will be second to bat. Both vehicles are being developed twice as fast as core GM products were created in the past." And neccessity is the mother of invention. GM slashed costs by $4.5bn annually from 2018, and that forced designers to use virtual development more extensively. Also less reliance on building prototypes, wind tunnels and physical crash tests. Which you can do hundreds of times over without the month it takes to rig a real test car with all the sensors. So what are the other platforms important to EVs? They include MEB at VW, and E-GMP at Hyundai. https://www.motortrend.com/news/gm-cadillac-gmc-lyriq-hummer-ev-market-launch/ VOLKSWAGEN’S PROJECT TRINITY EV "Volkswagen is hard at work on its next-generation electric vehicle currently known as Project Trinity is expected to debut in 2026. It will be one of the first VW group vehicles to be built on a new dedicated electric vehicle architecture, called Scalable Systems Platform (SSP for short), that will allow for more range, more advanced tech and a slight rethink of VW’s business model (because most of the group's models will end up using this platform)." reports InsideEVs: "The SSP chassis architecture is also important to delve deeper into. It will eventually not only replace today’s MEB platform, but also the PPE platform used in the VW group’s larger and more luxurious electric offerings. PPE isn’t even out yet, but Audi used it to underpin its close-to-production A6 e-tron concept that recently bowed at the Shanghai auto show. The plan is said to be for SSP to be used for around 80 percent of the VW group’s future models." https://insideevs.com/news/503889/vw-project-trinity-ssp-platform/ https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/volkswagen-project-trinity-herald-car-buying-revolution TESLA TO TWEAK APPLICATION FOR GERMAN GIGAFACTORY, MINISTRY SAYS "Tesla (TSLA.O) plans to tweak the application for its planned gigafactory in Europe, the German state in which the plant is being built said on Tuesday, adding it was not possible at this stage to say how long it would take to approve the site." reports Reuters: "Tesla had said on Monday that the construction of the factory, located in Gruenheide outside Berlin, was moving forward, adding production and deliveries were "on track for late 2021". The Ministry of Agriculture in the German state of Brandenburg said the amended application would include the construction and operation of a battery cell factory, which was previously flagged by Tesla." https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/no-timetable-approve-teslas-german-gigafactory-german-state-2021-04-27/ RENAULT IS GEARING UP FOR EV SALES OF 65% BY 2025 "Renault CEO Luca de Meo has set new targets for the electrification of the brand in Europe. In 2025, the share of electrified passenger cars should be 65%. By 2030, that figure should be at least 90%." says Next Greencar: "By 2030, emissions from Groupe Renault vehicles sold in Europe (i.e. including brands such as Alpine or Dacia) are to be reduced by 65%, but only by 35% worldwide. This suggests the French company expects a significant hybrid share of new car sales in 2030. The CEO also announced that Renault will not develop a new engine for the “last generation” of diesel vehicles. Instead, he said, an existing engine will be adapted. Renault develops and builds its own internal combustion engines, some of which have been supplied to other carmakers, including Daimler." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9139/renault-is-gearing-up-for-ev-sales-of-65-by-2025/ AMAZON’S FIRST ELECTRIC VANS STARTED DELIVERING PACKAGES IN THE DENVER AREA "The first Amazon deliveries using new Rivian electric vans reached Denver this week, one of 16 U.S. locations the online retailer plans to deploy electric vehicles on its routes." says ColoradoSun.com: "The Denver-area routes are part of an initial test in different climates that is also occurring in a few other U.S. cities before the Rivian EV program expands. But its R1T electric truck and R1S electric SUV are different from the custom Amazon vans. The consumer models are expected to have a range of 300 miles, compared with 150 for the Amazon vans. The limited range means Colorado delivery routes will be in the Aurora, Boulder, Denver and Thornton neighborhoods near existing Amazon warehouses, said Nikki Wheeler, an Amazon spokeswoman. “The range we’re sharing is what we have seen based on current testing,” she said." https://coloradosun.com/2021/04/27/amazon-electric-vans-denver-rivian/ https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/transportation/amazons-custom-electric-delivery-vehicles-are-starting-to-hit-the-road HYUNDAI'S N-DAY - TEASES PERFORMANCE ELECTRIC "Hyundai is on a wild streak lately, building high-performance versions of its existing vehicles like the Kona N, revealed today. However, in announcing that sporty compact crossover, the company also teased that it would soon build a full-blown N vehicle based on its all-electric E-GMP platform, indicating that zero-emissions performance will soon be on the menu from Hyundai." says Motor1: " Lessons from the Veloster N ETCR program seem to have informed Hyundai’s high-performance aspirations, evidenced by the RM20e concept that debuted last year. The RM20e prototype, which was developed in partnership with Rimac, boasts a wild 810 horsepower" https://www.motor1.com/news/503719/hyundai-electric-hydrogen-n-model/ SAMSUNG FIRST US BATTERY FACTORY "Samsung's first megafactory on American soil is looking more likely after it agreed a deal to provide batteries for electric vehicle (EV) startup Rivian. The potential development of a mega-plant in the US would represent a massive step forward for Samsung SDI — the battery affiliate of the South Korean tech giant — which to date only has one facility outside of Asia, in Hungary." says Business INsider: "While Rivian has yet to reveal its production targets, Bloomberg reports that the company will try to produce as many as 40,000 new EVs in its first year with that figure eventually rising to 300,000." Simon Moores, managing director at research group Benchmark Mineral Intelligence: "At a production rate of 40,000 EVs a year, Rivian will need over 7 gigawatt-hours of lithium-ion battery cells annually. If all of this supply is from Samsung that's the equivalent of 12% of the Korean battery maker's annual capacity in 2020. Any multi-gigawatt-hour contract with an automaker will need a plant on the same continent" Moores said that shipping large quantities of lithium batteries over long distances was "difficult" and that they were registered as hazardous goods. https://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-first-us-megafactory-battery-rivian-2021-4?r=US&IR=T QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Whats the most effective consumer education regarding EVs?
