Na półce pod tytułem tragedia, jedną z najbardziej rozpychających się opowieści, wprost domagającą się własnej półki, jest historia o dwóch siostrach, historia w europejskiej kulturze ludowej opowiadana we wszystkich językach. I we wszystkich językach śpiewana (te śpiewane wersje należą do nurtu tzw. murder ballads) Jedna z moich ulubionych wersji morderczych ballad to „The Cruel Sister”. To jedna z wielu wersji ballady „The Twa Sister”. A tych wersji jest ponad 20, noszą różne tytuły, m.in. „Minnorie”, „Binnorie”, “The Wind and Rain”, “Dreadful Wind and Rain”, “The Bonny Swans” i“ Two Sisters” . Historia zazwyczaj opowiada o dwóch siostrach zakochanych w jednym zalotniku, nie zawsze jest to książe. Ale zawsze wybiera młodszą. Starsza więc zabiera młodszą na spacer nad rzekę lub morze najczęściej. Tam spycha siostrę do wody, ta oczywiście tonie. Ciało zamordowanej dziewczyny po jakimś czasie wypływa na brzeg. Ktoś zwłoki znajduje i zazwyczaj wykonuje z nich instrument muzyczny najczęściej harfę lub skrzypce. W końcowej scenie instrument sam gra, wyśpiewuje historię zbrodni i ujawnia morderczynię. Ocenia się, że najstarsza mordercza ballada o dwóch siostrach, „The Miller and the Knights Daughter” ( jej zapis pojawił się w 1656 roku na broadside'ach) pochodzi najprawdopodobniej z Northumbrii. I tak mieszkańcy wysp brytyjskich od 500 lat zbierając się przy ogniskach czy w tawernach wyśpiewują historię o siostrzanej zazdrości. Ale nie tylko na wyspach śpiewają tę historię. Śpiewają w całej Europie. Prym w tym wiodą Skandynawowie. W samym języku szwedzkim znanych jest 125 różnych wariantów i jeśli dołożyć wersje w języku duńskim, farerskim, Islandzkim czy norweskim zbierze się tego podobno grubo ponad 200. A jeśli rozejrzymy się po naszej części Europy to również znajdziemy bogactwo motywu zbrodni siostrzanej. Śpiewają o niej choćby Słoweńcy i Węgrzy, u nas motywy ludowych opowieści wykorzystał Słowacki w „ Balladynie”. Mają swoją muzyczną opowieść o dwóch siostrach również Ukraińcy. W tej wersji ojciec ma dwie córki. Starsza, a jakże, pyta młodszą: kogo kochasz siostrzyczko? A młodsza na to, że Wasyla. I tu pojawia się problem, bo starsza chyba też. Zaprosiła więc młodszą na spacer, do brodu, nad rzekę. No i dalszy ciąg znamy. Zna go cała Europa. Znają go (ten ciąg dalszy) nawet w małej pomorskiej wsi Michałowo. Tam dwie siostry, Anna i Justyna oraz mąż Justyny Kuba, potomkowie Łemków przesiedlonych w ramach operacji „Wisła” założyli zespół Michalove. Zespół przy nienachalnym akompaniamencie akordeonu, bębnów i handpanu (takiej cudnie grającej miski) śpiewa stare ludowe pieśni z naszej części świata, głównie z Ukrainy. Śpiewa oczywiście wielogłosowo. I uwaga - 6 lutego wydał swoją debiutancką płytę „Rano” a na niej, między innymi, prawdziwą perełkę, balladę o dwóch siostrach właśnie. Stara ukraińska pieśń „Bulo w batka” jest jak cała płyta - zjawiskowa. Co tu opowiadać, posłuchajcie. Sail-Ho Audycja zawiera utwory: „Den talende strengeleg” (w tle) w wykonaniu zespołu ALBA, muzyka: tradycyjna “The Cruel Sister” w wykonaniu grupy Old Blind Dogs, słowa i muzyka: tradycyjne „Two Sisters” w wykonaniu zespołu Clannad, słowa i muzyka: tradycyjne „Två Systrar” w wykonaniu zespołu Garmarna, słowa i muzyka: tradycyjne „Bulo w batka” w wykonaniu zespołu Michalove, słowa i muzyka: tradycyjne

This episode of the podcast will feature music that has a personal connection for me, from artists who have inspired me in my early folk music days, to those I know personally from my area, to those I've performed with live in venues from Canada's east coast to my original and current province of Ontario. Another of my main influences is our next artist, Scotsman Jim Malcolm. His former work with the band Old Blind Dogs, and his solo material have been very important for me. He now records with his wife Susie Malcolm, herself a talented musician. The tradition here is alive and kicking, and from my early days getting into Celtic music, it has incorporated pride in our past with embracing modern musical approaches. They've long been a fixture of The Glengarry Highland Games, in Maxville, which was a crucial place for nurturing my love of Celtic music. We played a regular gig at a little wine bar called The Sour Grape in a small town called Oromocto. We didn't make much money, but it sure was a lot of fun. Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. Actually went to school with Seamus Kennedy who you have featured on some shows. In 1980 I moved to US and I now live in Somersworth NH, next to Dover for past  25+ years. Dover is where Tommy Makem made his home and whose family are friends of ours– people from the textile mills in Armagh were some of the founders of the City. It was here where I came back to the music and started dancing again at age of 50 and picked up a mandolin that I love to play, albeit not great, but have fun One of my daughters is married and lives in Dartmouth Nova Scotia and I fell in love with the NS Scottish/Irish music and song during my visits, she is an accomplished artist and did artwork for an album I made with a group called An Banna Ceoil several years ago; we don’t play out anymore but are still playing “house” music Came across your podcast through iTunes a couple of months ago and will now be a regular; love the live sessions from the pubs Keep the music alive Marc, it keeps  us young in mind and heart. BTW I was able to download the Free Music – very easy process – just have to get them onto my phone in iTunes to carry them with me – if you have any advice on this would love to hear it."
