With regular host Donald Theriault out in Los Angeles covering E3, the inmates run the asylum as Neal Ronaghan, Alex Culafi, Justin Berube, and Zach Miller take you through E3 2019 from their perspective at home. (Recorded June 12.)
We tried really hard to make an RPG themed episode of Jeopardy but things went south after David volunteered to create the questions. The panel tonight consists of David Lloyd, Jordan Rudek, Donald Theriault and Casey Gibson. In the year's most stunning upset that didn't involve the Maple Leafs making the playoffs... Just in time for the first business day of the new fiscal year, it's the long-awaited GOTY show. There's three parts this year. Part 1: A full countdown of the top 10s. Or in some cases, the top 8s. Part 2: A Whatcha Watchin' recap. Sadly, Donald's participation for this in 2018 may have been DELETED. Part 3: Other miscellaneous awards. This podcast was recorded on March 17 and edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. A new version of the episode has been uploaded to resolve an issue with the audio.
FEATURING: Jon AND Greg couldn't join us, but Donald Theriault joins us for New Business, and then Jonathan Metts comes in for the second segment!(00:08:49) New Business - Fire Emblem Warriors. (00:28:37) Nintendo of Canada Holiday Event. (00:47:37) Listener Mail - Unpopular opinions. (01:01:44) Super Mario Odyssey.
The only thing missing from this momentous episode is a Brass Bonanza.Somehow, against all logic, we've reached 100 episodes of Nintendo Free Radio. So it's roundabout time for some changes. In New Business, it's a group chat as for Mushroom-related reasons all three members of the team snagged SNES Classics, and between them managed to play a full third of the lineup. Donald picks up with Culdcept Revolt on the 3DS, before Stephen tries his hand at virtual head formation and also busts out the Super Scope VR... er, the Farpoint controller. Austen's big ones for this episode are the last Microsoft published title not to be loot boxed to hell in Cuphead, and in time for Dishonored Halloween his return to the world of Dishonored 2.Whatcha Watchin' serves as a nice summary of our collective tastes. Stephen brings the sci-fi with Seth MacFarlane's Orville, which should probably last a bit longer than every show Fox greenlit between cancelling and reinstating Family Guy. Austen goes superheroic with Best Picture nominee Wonder Woman, while Donald represents the anime faction with a few rounds of Code Geass. The Feature discussion is two parts, as we are keeping the show going under a new name that you'll probably see on our Twitter account, before doing the traditional look back at some of the highs and lows of production. Even the Mushrooms have a theme, as traditional punching bags of trade shows, Square Enix and recent foe Amazon come around for a good pillorying along with the continued ineptitude of PlayStation Network (seventy bucks a year!).We'll be back with you soon and will let you know when the email address change goes through, but for now we'll forward all the mail sent to the old address. This podcast was recorded on October 2 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
After this month, we've fully banned "Rock You Like a Hurricane".The Great One episode of Nintendo Free Radio has quite a bit packed into two and a half hours or so. In New Business, Stephen kept pecking away at the Monster Hunter Stories demo - did we mention this thing is LONG? - but we're not sure if he took the plunge. Maybe the Zelda DLC will help. Donald grabbed the demo for Project Octopath Traveler as well as the second good Metroid game of this decade (or ever) in Metroid: Samus Returns. Austen has some brief mentions including blatant Square selling out (because none of their games are) before dealing with the double main event of Life is Strange: Before the Storm episode 1 and the dreaded Knack 2. Thanks to the Nine Network for adding those bits to Donald's hard drive.Whatcha Watchin' covers the Netflix Voltron season 3, with a pitstop at the end of modern Ninja Turtles, before Austen castigates bad casting in Batman v Harley Quinn and violates about twenty copyrights when he visits Big O. Billion dollar debts not included, but probable in that universe. The Feature sort of got rolled into the Mushrooms as we encourage you to donate to a quality organization to help Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, which are still completely without power as of press time and has a member of the NWR fora living in the former. Also covered: The passing of The Brain, debates over the All-22 film, and Nintendo being Doomed this Christmas. Some big changes are coming to the podcast after the next episode, so keep it locked to our Twitter feed for updates as well as to send suggestions for things to discuss on said episode. If you can't keep it to 14... sorry, 280 characters and need a bit more space to breathe, then drop us an email or leave it here. Either way, we want to hear from you one more time. This podcast was recorded on September 17 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
We think they got out without needing deprogramming. The latest edition of Nintendo Free Radio has a lot of cults involved in it. For New Business, Stephen covered off the Monster Hunter Stories demo, before Donald lept in with the Danganronpa V3 demo and after a brief stop in Gunvolt land (review available here) he wrapped by taking one for the team and injecting himself with Sonic Mania. Austen shows determination in going through spoiler-free on Undertale, but the same can't be said for Dave Bautista Presents Guardians of the Galaxy by Telltale. His closer is a bit of a deeper dive into FFXII: The Zodiac Age for his 150th Platinum.Whatcha Watchin' is heavy on the reimaginings. Donald talks the recently released Death Note (Netflix US based crap version), while Stephen is catching up on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2010s). Austen's life might be in a hurricane right now, but before that he headed over to Duckburg to check out the new version of Ducktales before grinding for love in Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In Dungeons?.After a quick Feature covering Gamescom and another recent news of import, it's off to the Mushrooms for some retail pillorying between the SNES Classic preorder gong show and Amazon messing with Prime on the worst possible day. Also touched on: Stephen's new transportation, and Disney World nerdery. We're one episode away from 100, and because of Irma there's likely going to be an extra week+ of lead time for 99, so let us know if there's something you want us to discuss. This podcast was recorded on August 27 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
An apt description of Pyre's game, if you add an equal sign.A very brief summer doldrums edition of Nintendo Free Radio awaits this week as we don't even clear the two hour barrier. But it's packed with action. New Business is mostly Donald to start as he gives a quick Splatoon 2 update before rolling into Ever Oasis and Monster Hunter Stories's demo (full impressions here) as the 3DS lives despite some people's best efforts. Austen talks visual novel/NBA Jam hybrid Pyre - it'll make sense - and after some quick updates wraps the segment with permadeath faker Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.Whatcha' Watchin comes close to a Donald Sports-Ent Minute with GLOW (the 2017 Netflix show, not the promotion itself), before Austen runs wild on Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and the first season of the groin-grabbingly popular anime My Hero Academia. Then it's straight into the Mushrooms as we call out Telltale, celebrate Kickstarters, and Donald transitions from on severance to on vacation. And for the record, Agents of Mayhem's review embargo was midnight Pacific time on the 15th (so after it launched), and the best price we've seen in the interim is $43.74 on WinGamesStore for the PC version.Have something we can discuss to get back past 120 minutes? Drop us a line, either via email or the comments. This podcast was recorded on August 13 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
You know Rock, that's a very good question you ask about the halfway mark. We try to stay positive in this Nintendo Free Radio... well, two of us anyway. New Business opens as Stephen breaks the glass on lords management with League of Legends before a freshly-unemployed Donald debates applying to work at Grizzco in Splatoon 2. After some hardware impressions of what in a just world would be that hot Liquid Metal Slime 2DSXL, we get medieval (and other time periods) on Fate:Extella. Austen provides updates on Injustice 2 and Prey as well as the most insane of speedruns, while also chatting about Sundered.Whatcha Watchin' gets real dark. Stephen brought Valerian while Donald and Austen tag team Castlevania and Donald didn't actually mind Rogue One. But Stephen brought the most horrifying film of the year, with an 8% rating on Metacritic that not even Langrisser could touch. We speak of course, of... The Emoji Movie. The Feature tries to stay positive with the yearly countdown of games we're hyped for, though the team finds itself on the same wavelength for a long time. The Mushrooms pay tribute to titans of animation and figure out how to borrow when you're a third of a Gates in the hole, while Donald is so mad at the world he forgot to do the paper toss at the end.The mailbox is barren - please to be filling it. And don't forget our @ replies, either. This podcast was recorded on July 31 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
Technical issues and Dragonites all up in this joint. A lot has changed since we recorded the show, and just getting it together was a beast, but due to various circumstances it's another NFR out the door. Stephen opens New Business with some VR chat and wondering what the hell happened to Skype, before seguing into a doubleheader of Borderlands games. Donald goes from Worst Character to a candidate for Worst Game in Valkyria Revolution, then finds something more to his tastes with Tokyo Xanadu and FFXII: The Zodiac Age. (Given his username on a different, more prominent message board, this was basically inevitable.) Austen wraps up with Tokyo Mirage Sessions, then after a brief Crash landing hits noted May success story Injustice 2 and noted May bomba Prey (2017). Space lesbians not included, we saved those for the next segment.Whatcha Watchin features a long superhero block, then moves into chat about Doctor Who's latest coin flip landing on tails for once. Finally, we wrap with the hilariously offensive Outlaw Star. As it was a slow news weeks, the Mushrooms replace the feature as we chat SNES Classic, getting stuck in Ohio, and mourn the death of a Hollywood legend. The next episode (96) is already in the can and should be out soonish, but we would still love to know what you're excited for the rest of this year. Lists can be sent to the usual methods or left below. This podcast was recorded on July 16 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
Hey, remember when we thought EA could have a press event? The E3 show ended up being a tricker edit than the shows it discussed, but it's finally available for your perusal. The crew chats all of the E3 shows and videos in order: EA, Microsoft, Bethesda, Devolver Digital, Ubisoft, Sony, and Nintendo. There was also some other news that surrounded the show, including Take Two's mod clampdown (since resolved), and another round of bile toward Konami. But it may not be the last E3 show we see this month...The podcast was recorded on June 17 and edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin.
It's no coincedence that the E3 preview show sets the Poison Mushroom record. Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb, despite the best efforts of the game industry starting from the day after this posts. So Nintendo Free Radio soldiers on. New Business sees Stephen get his rail on with Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, before Donald tags in for weekend 1 impressions from the Arms Testpunch and a portable strategy RPG block. Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia and Disgaea 5 Complete all present different slants on the strategy RPG, and all came out within four days proving this business has no imagination. Austen got some role-playing on with Okage: Shadow King, then after a trip to the NBA Playgrounds (where the Mailman still doesn't deliver on Sundays) he finishes with future Switch title RIME.The back end of the show got weird for Mushroom-discussed reasons, so Whatcha Watchin' got adjusted a bit. Donald deferred on Better Call Saul S2 and Stephen breezed past Logan to get to Lego Batman. Austen rips through most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before heading over to Britian (Doctor Who), Polynesia (Moana) and a space station filled with crap movies (Mystery Science Theater 3000, both original and Kickstarter-powered revival). The Feature discussion is the gaming industry's biggest millstone, E3. With the transition to PAX Southwest in progress, there's predictions ahoy - plus late breaking discussion of Nintendo's online service. The Mushrooms are heavy on the Poison, with special dispensation to Stephen's former AV program, Donald's most dreaded news story, and Square Enix. Because it's Square Enix. The next show will be the E3 recap show, and if you spot something worth talking about there, sock it to us.This podcast was recorded on May 30 / June 1 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
...and he got loose in the editing room.It was a busy few weeks for the NFR crew in the lead-up to the summer, and we're breaking it down for you. Stephen opens New Business with Kaz's Folly, as he made the eye-searing purchase of Playstation VR. Many trials ensued. A very puzzled Donald got it out of his system with Puyo Puyo Tetris before diving into Nier Automata and a pair of pickled Persona: The endgame of 5, and then another crack at 3 Portable (that has since gone on hold for review purposes). Also included: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, because BAAAAAAA. Austen got psychological with Little Nightmares and freaky with Yooka-Laylee, before heading back to the horror house with What Remains of Edith Finch and some quick hits including the first part of the latest Telltale cash grab, Guardians of the Galaxy. This becomes important later.Whatcha Watchin' sees Stephen keep on the VR train as it also serves as a 3D movie device before he tag teams the #1 movie in the country (on the weekend of its release), Dave Bautista's Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Austen then gets a little sacreligious with Noragami Aragoto and Sunday Without God before redeeming himself with Quantum Leap. The Feature discussion is part of a new annual tradition as we look back at the first four months of the year in games and try to guess which won't get the love they deserve, and then turn the cannon the other way to guess the rest of the year of the ignored. In the Mushrooms, we talk New 2DS, bonuses, and why The Witcher 3 can jump off a cliff.Next episode is the final Nintendo Free Radio E3 prediction show, and we want to know what you think will happen with the Nintendo Spotlight and the other overly long company dog and pony shows. Send us your predictions to us by email, Twitter (if they can fit in 140 characters) or just reply here. This podcast was recorded on May 7 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
Let's grant Satan immense amounts of power while we're at it. What's the worst that could happen? This edition of Nintendo Free Radio is probably going to have a lot of entries for Donald's GOTY list, if we're being honest. For New Business Stephen has played more of Breath of the Wild, including being ready for Ganon, while Donald dropped nearly 90 hours into Persona 5. (The game was completed a couple of days after we recorded, and NWR Patrons have access to a full review.) Austen was also into PS4 RPGs, but his are the nonsensical (Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep) and the retro-inspired (Cosmic Star Heroine) before finishing with Bafmodads 2017, aka Yooka-Laylee. Not included, but desperately needed: Cars.Whatcha Watchin' has Stephen cover Powerless, and in a sign that the TV industry is run by morons it's already been shelved. Austen has the 2017 Power Rangers movie at the right price, a quick hit on the Steins;Gate movie, and Mobile Suit Gundam: The 8th MS Team. Donald meanwhile got caught up in the NHL Playoffs, and apparently he jinxed things because the Leafs ended up losing three straight one-goal games (including two in overtime) while Austen's Jazz advanced in seven to get dealt with in Golden State's fo-fo-fo.The Feature discussion whips around some news including the recent Nintendo Direct, the death of the NES Classic, the rebirth of Nintendo actually selling things that hook up to a TV, and Microsoft bailing on gaming in the form of Scorpio. The Mushrooms hit streaming restrictions (thankfully relaxed mostly on P5's part), Starcraft Remastered, and the continuing price nosedive of one of 2016's most despised games. If you have something you want us to cover... especially since the last few weeks have been kind of slow in terms of news outside of earnings reports, then drop us a line, a Tweet or a comment below. This podcast was recorded on April 17 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
One sounds like he's on drugs, another dropped for a half hour. How did this show release?Following the stunning release of not one but two Game of the Year shows (you can grab 2015 and 2016 here if you missed them), the editing shabeen went into super lockdown trying to fix this episode of Nintendo Free Radio up. And they almost succeeded. New Business opens with Stephen tackling Starcraft (pre-remaster announcement) before Donald swings in with Austen's inevitable Game of the Year: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. The impressions are early, so no spoilers, but someone's trying something inspired by the initials LKD. Austen doubles back to Horizon: Zero Dawn before hitting some of the backlog including noted bomb Mafia 3 before finishing with four replays worth of Resident Evil 7. (The DLC mentioned, Not A Hero, was delayed on posting day. Go figure.)Whatcha Watchin' has Stephen and Austen discussing the merits of modern Disney in the context of them swimming in piles of money with Beauty and the Beast 2017, while Donald tries to avoid being left out by breaking the glass of children's card games: Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged is back. The Feature, extra clippy thanks to Donald's continued rivalry with audio recording software, features the other reason why he's only catching up on Q1 now: PAX East. It was his first con, and possibly the last. The Mushrooms hit the usual suspects - internet witch hunts, retailer idiocy (though Amazon did make good with FREE Take Your Heart editions for those whose orders were cancelled) and the recesses of Stephen's Mushrooms. Now that this monster has been slain, 92 (hopefully sounding WAY better) will follow shortly behind. If you're looking to get in on the road to 100, hit us up by email, Twitter or the comments below. This podcast was recorded on March 19/20 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
The sudden dip into the backlog will make sense on April 1, we swear. It's a rather depressed edition of Nintendo Free Radio delayed by PAX, audio issues, and the need to play some rather large games. Donald opens New Business with a bit of gacha good in Fire Emblem Heroes (still no bought orbs!) before a quick hit into a GOTY. Stephen takes out his "Game He Missed" with Crypt of the Necrodancer before Austen brings it to the break with Gravity Rush 2, the first of two nonsensical Kingdom Hearts collections that released this year, and early impressions of the game ten points worse than Zelda: Horizon Zero Dawn.Whatcha Watchin' sees Stephen deal with the second largest threat to America again before Austen gets technical with the BluRay release of Quantum Leap and a couple of heroic items in the Lego Batman Movie and Justice Leage Dark. Donald abstained for reasons that will become clear......because he was focused on his shiny new (at the time) toy in the Nintendo Switch. Opening weekend impressions are the Feature topic, and those reviews are now available for your perusal. The Mushrooms keep the Switch train rolling with its technical shortcomings and journo poisonings, before Donald sets up the episode title with his weekend from hell. (Donations were appreciated, and most of the games affected have returned in one form or another.)The feed will be jumping this weekend as not only will 91 be on the air, but a wormhole has opened in the editing bay...This podcast was recorded on March 5 and edited by Donald Theriault.
In other math news, Stephen = (Donald + Austen) Despite a technical hiccup in the recording booth, Nintendo Free Radio 89 is here for your eventual mockery. But first is a brief New Business as Stephen finally finished the first chapter of Dragon Quest Builders. Yes, it took that long. Donald jumps in with bar-filling and recipe discovery as among his brief mentions is the return of Final Fantasy XV (its last appearance until roughly April). Austen has some quick hits as well, including the finest use of a circular saw since Donald's shop class, Resident Evil 7.Whatcha Watchin' is also brief, as Stephen is celebrating an anniversary with Luther while Donald double-dips on game show controversey with Big Bucks: The Press Your Luck Scandal and Major Fraud. See if you can spot which one was done by the production company. Austen remains in England as he talks both of the famous Holmes shows, Elementary and Sherlock. The Feature is most of the show, so much that the recording jumped ahead three days in the middle. We look back at our ill-fated 2016 predictions, and make some new ones. Stephen is apparently trying to win on sheer volume, while Donald and Austen try to stick with things that will be proven right. Also, the Scorpio makes its first Price is Right appearance. Brief Mushrooms include a request for a disproval of Rule 34, hatred of Irwin R. Schyster, and a great voice actor possibly returning to work after telling cancer to sod off.NEXT EPISODE IS GAME OF THE YEAR 2017 - and 2016's will post first. If you'd like to submit a top 5 list, please hit us up with the usual methods. This podcast was recorded on January 29/February 1 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
EVERYBODY, RUN... oh, it's just some fat slob with a Dualshock 4.Following a longer than expected holiday break, Nintendo Free Radio has reconvened for your listening enjoyment. Off the top of New Business, Donald has bad news for the PS4: he has one, which based on the last four platforms he's bought can only mean one thing... the first game he bought for it after getting it, Doom (2016). Also, we may need a judge's ruling on episode 89. After some quick hits - literally, in one instance - Stephen finds our lack of faith in Star Wars: Battlefront disturbing. (Rest in power, Carrie Fisher.) Stephen then answers the most common EVO question (when's mahvel) with Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, before wrapping with the impossible as Final Fantasy XV actually launched. Austen grabs the miracle torch with The Last Guardian before trying to wrap up stuff for Game of the Year with Uncharted 4 and Stardew Valley (PS4) headlining. After a returning champion and a very... interesting intro, Donald opens Whatcha Watchin' wiith a last celebration of Pokémon's 20th anniversay before Stephen smells what The Rock is cookin' in Moana. And then of course, the contractually obligated Doctor Who Christmas special. Austen's twin bill is a brief Star Wars Rebels update before thinking more about the Assassin's Creed movie than anyone in history. The feature, of course, is Switchmas. A system that is constantly in flux, we break it down based on the information known as of recording time. Who's in, who's out, and who's waiting for a price drop? (And yes, we know we are derelict in our duty as it pertains to Xenoblade 2.) The Mushrooms include a farewell to Donald's system buying after Switchmas, Stephen's own difficult switch, and words of praise for punching holidays. Now that the December NPDs are out and we have been able to wrap the predictions for 2016, we will hit them AND step out on the ledge for 2017. Want a piece of the action? Send it to us by email, Twitter, or leave them here. We're also planning to do the annual Game of the Year show in early February, and we've received a top 5 list already so if you want to send us yours, don't be afraid to drop them in as well! This podcast was recorded on January 14 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
For sale: One person's dignity. Please contact Easy Allies, attention K. BosmanIn an attempt to keep new content flowing through the holidays, the Nintendo Free Radio team has assembled to talk sellouts and other game news. Donald starts out New Business with a quick look at DS Virtual Console on the Wii U (it's still weird) by way of an inexpensive Kirby Mass Attack before providing a Pokémon Sun and Moon update. The Pokédex is finished, by the by. Stephen transitions into the world of mecha with Titanfall 2, while Austen is less than impressed with Dishonored 2 so he settled into a couple of adventure games with King's Quest (2014 - 16) and Telltale's Batman.Stephen picks up the baton for Whatcha Watchin' with a report on the CW's great superhero show crossover, while Donald has been feeling a fair bit of despair lately so he settled down with a Funimation trial and watched Danganronpa 3. Austen gets Final Fantasy XV out of his system with Kingsglaive, before finding something soothing with Kubo and the Two Strings. It's a weekend double Feature as the crew covers the lows and... well, lows (unless you count the That Dragon, Cancer speech or Nolan North encouraging game developers to unionize) with the Game Awards before the question of "where's mahvel" is FINALLY answered at the PlayStation Experience. Also, it's kind of hard to tell Ys games apart. The Mushrooms hit on fading glory, hums, incentives not to preorder and some exciting announcements.Although circumstances may conspire to prevent it, we are going to try and squeeze in one more regulation recording before Christmas. If there's anything you wish to send us, you can do it by the usual methods. This podcast was recorded on December 5 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
Just watch out for a stray episode of This Week In Baseball.(Note: Due to a mishap possibly involving the Large Hadron Collider, Stephen's audio was not salvageable for New Business. We do apologize for the inconvenience and would like to congratulate Stephen on beating Monster Hunter Generations.)It's been another wacky few weeks for the Nintendo Free Radio crew, but they're back to lay down gaming and pop culture jocularity. Donald ended up opening New Business with Exist Archive, the Fogarty-class self-plagarism of Valkyrie Profile, before getting his stylus on in Severed (Wii U) and some review games. Plus a game we'd really rather not talk about. Austen pulled in some recent indie darlings of the PlayStation 4 with Seraph and Aragami, and following the latest sordid tales of the shooter realm finishes with the long awaited Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter.Stephen enters for Whatcha Watchin' with the newly relocated Supergirl, and following the superhero discussion Donald interjects with British comedy panel show Mock the Week and a very rare dub of a mid-90s Fire Emblem anime. And since it was before any of the games got localized or Smash Bros. made them famous, there's some interesting naming going on. (The full show can be viewed on Youtube.) Austen pays off a Kickstarter from early in the year as he provides a counterbalancing view of Vision of Escaflowne. The Feature discussion is a breakdown of the officially known information about the Nintendo Switch. Who's in? Will storage be a concern? Why the bloody hell do companies use .wav on shipping product? In the Mushrooms, we slam PSN and Xbox Live while celebrating the removal of a milstone and facepalming heavily about onesies with pockets for melee weapons and Doritos. The next episode might be 86, but it's also going to be recorded around the US Thanksgiving. And with that, we'd like to know what YOU'RE thankful for in a year that some people on the show have wanted to declare non-canon. Email, tweet or hit us up below and we'll make sure to enter it into the record for the next show! This podcast was recorded on November 6 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
The argument against using Skype is five minutes of using Skype. The planning for this episode was weird - there was a telethon segment to plan (coming soon to a feed near you), Austen had a fight with the one hit of The Scorpions, and Stephen's mid-move. Still, we soldier on. In New Business, Donald opens with a 3DS RPG - stop me if that sounds familiar - in Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse, then transitions to a couple of adventure titles with Paper Mario: Color Splash (touchscreen mostly not included) and Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness. Stephen leads a discussion of the Dragon Quest Builders demo, and two panelists ended up grabbing the full version. One's obvious, but one will *shock* you. Stephen has also been trying out future free-to-play shooter Paladins, while Austen grabs some quick hits and finishes with Bioshock 1, 2 and Minvera's Den. After a brief Whatcha Watchin' - Stephen grabbed Luke Cage, while Donald and Austen tag-teamed the fabric-challenged brawler Kill la Kill - we head straight to the Mushrooms. On the menu: Randy Pitchford is probably nuts, the Xbox One sucks at firmware updates, we're losing a chat program, Stephen needs to check his boots, Donald is saving money, and despite the Golden State Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals we may still find out if God hates Cleveland. Keep an eye out for our special segment from the NWR Live Podcast Telethon for Child's Play - and if you haven't gotten in on the giving, you've got a couple of days to fix that. Also, be sure to send us a tweet, a comment here or an email if there's something you'd like us to talk about. This podcast was recorded on October 13 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
Big Block of Cheese Day is Andrew Jackson's sole contribution to society. (Apologies in advance, but Donald's microphone had an issue until the end of New Business. It was dealt with from there, and the persons responsible were promptly sacked.) A quick episode gets a quick turnaround on Nintendo Free Radio, as we keep it all about the games. Donald takes the lead in New Business with the biggest game of the day, Dragon Quest VII. Will it win Best Remake by default, or is an hour and a half too long to wait for a slime to approach? Donald has also acquired a Xbox 360, so we hammer through some game library suggestions for those who are a decade late to the party, before ending on Noitu Love: Devolution. Stephen has been playing SteamWorld Tower Defense to get ready for the upcoming Wii U version of Heist, and he finds it a tad irritating. As a result, he jumps to join Austen in a massive post-update round of Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 (100% K-Log free). Austen has a quick collection of smaller downloads and disc games including Bioshock Even More HD, a game that will probably get someone sued when it hits the Vita, and PacMan Championship Edition 2. A brief Whatcha Watchin' covers a couple of chron-gaming projects and Star Wars Rebels before we dip into the West Wing for the feature. Yep, it's the return of the two-ton block of cheese, with nutball groups including TGS, the lack of an NX announcement, and a company apparently interested in killing itself. The Mushrooms are heavy on the Poison side, nut we do come up with a 1up at the end. If there's anything you've wanted to know or want us to cover, leave a comment below, hit us up on the Twitters or drop us an email! This podcast was recorded on September 18 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
Because there's absolutely no RPGs coming out right now, we recommend a dose of Nintendo Free Radio. New Business is a largely two-man affair following a brief Monster Hunter Generations update from Stephen. Donald spent the ideal amount for Skylanders SuperChargers but may have been screwed by his choice of platform, but he's OK with it since he got a hold of the consensus 2016 Game of the Year. Yes, Metroid Prime Federation Force is out and Donald brings the praise in his usual understated fashion. Since Austen never asked for this, he's playing a recent Deus Ex game... in Deus Ex Go. Following an update on his progress in a console version (Human Revolution), he finishes with PS4 indie game Valley. Despite comparisons to Metroid Prime (the original), it might actually be good. Whatcha Watchin' has Stephen exploring the life of Sinbad in Magi: Sinbad, before Donald talks commercial tie-ins again with Persona 5: Daybreakers. Thankfully, this OVA doesn't spoil. As a follow-up from last episode, Austen tuned into some animated busting in The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters, as well as a cautionary tale on executive meddling. For the Feature, the team re-assembled following a long week of presentations to talk the Nintendo Direct, the Sony conference (and various things surrounding it) and the first and last time we'll cover an Apple dog and pony show unless they bring back the iPod Classic. (With a 3.5mm headphone jack, kthnx.) The Mushrooms hit a price increase and other problems with Sony, but also folders. Finally. Seriously, this might be the longest discussion of Battleborn ever. Well muchachos, you asked for it: another Nintendo Free Radio has taken the air. Stephen's moving precluded him from much New Business, though he did give a brief overview of his Monster Hunter Generations progress. Donald tries to wrangle the team through discussions of 7th Dragon III Code: VfD, a couple of review games (Ambition of the Slimes, Tadpole Treble), the Blast Ball part of 2016 Game of the Year Metroid Prime Federation Force and... Minecraft. Yes, Minecraft. Like the game itself, it didn't last long. Austen has some brief mentions including Yooka-Laylee's Toybox demo, but his main event is Battleborn. 115 hours worth of non-whiny penguins, insane AI and stupid leveling systems. Whatcha Watchin' opens with Stephen talking Beat Bugs (Netflix) before engaging in a 4x100 relay with Donald on the Olympics (we recorded on Day 9). Donald wanted to keep his conversations short... and failed miserably since he made the mistake of dredging up The Force Awakens for another beating before going to the one movie more controversial than that: Ghostbusters (2016). The end result: One new crush, one whipping. The Feature discussion is normally related to our anniversary, as we dust off the first episode's feature and discuss games we're hyped for for the rest of the year. Note that at time of recording, Deus Ex: I Never Asked For This and Federation Force weren't out yet. The Mushrooms include the Final Fantasy XV delay that was all over but the shouting, Donald never darkening a doorstep again, and Stephen getting free surround sound equipment. You've got a little time to get your feedback to us for the next show, so drop it to the usual places or leave it below! This podcast was edited on August 14 and was edited by Donald Theriault, as the last thing he did as a 31 year old.
The reasons for the long delay are... complex. Following an unexpected summer hiatus due to various moving related concerns, Nintendo Free Radio has returned. And as befitting the first episode following E3, it's a massive New Business segment. Stephen's visiting arcades, then cursing the lack of Farfetch'd outside of Asia in Pokémon Go. (This is all prior to the update that made the game LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE, by the way.) Following a long session of Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, Stephen brings it home with Monster Hunter Generations. Donald grabs the portable baton and tries (badly) to talk Austen off the ledge over Zero Time Dilemma (if you want spoilers, we have that covered), then settles into a three week Fire Emblem Fates bender that covers all three paths. But the main event is the Non-Spite Game of the Year, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. Austen tries to stay cool in the Florida heat with I Am Setsuna, but he did play Mighty No 9 as well. Find out if it's better than nothing. New Business wraps with extended impressions of a shooter that released in May... we're talking about Battleborn, of course. What did you think he played? Oh, that one. It comes up too. Whatcha Watchin' sees Stephen investigate CBS drama in Person of Interest, before Austen checks out a couple of movies that made a lot of bloody money in China: Warcraft and Batman v Superman before swearing fealty to an Empire of Corpses. Donald lost his damn fool mind sometime around Canada Day, and the result is his contribution to WW: Yuri Kuma Arashi. All you need to know is the localized title would be "Lesbian Bear Storm". The crew then forgoes the feature and hits the Mushrooms which include moving, court proceedings and a pointed rant about a Canadian shipping company. Next time - whenever that is, for reasons that will become clear at the end of the episode - we will try to handle the top 5 games we're excited for the rest of the year. If you have a list, send it to us by the usual methods (Twitter, email, or leave it below). This podcast was recorded on July 24 and edited by Donald Theriault.
The deceased will deliver the eulogy, and those in attendance will have a couple of hours for rebuttal. The last show before E3 sees RPGamer co-owner / RPGCast regular Anna Marie Privitere return after an appearance on Episode 34 to talk games and the state of E3. Donald opens New Business with a brief NES mention before hitting his main event of Zero Escape: 999 and Virtue's Last Reward (including a Platinum trophy that will likely be his last). Anna then brings the maiden RPG love with Omega Quintet, which appears to be the result of sticking Disgaea, Stella Glow and a PS4 in a blender on puree. After that, we break down everything coming out in June for the role-playing fans (spoilers: A LOT). Stephen gets the dreaded montage as he played some, um, interesting things with his new fight stick, while Austen has been hitting the sauce in The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine before hitting the links for a little Dangerous Golf. It's golf made by the team who did Burnout 3. Need we say more? A brief Whatcha Watchin' ensues following the golf trip with Anna trying out "Diplomacy and Chili" with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Following a superhero block (including Captain America: Civil War) Donald keeps his streak alive with early impressions of Archer Season 6 - or should we say, Archer: Other M. But you're here for the big E3 preview and the crew does not disappoint. We make some predictions for the conferences - and like last year, some of them haven't been proven wrong yet. As well, we look at the state of E3 in an increasingly video-obsessed world. The Mushrooms prove one of Donald's predictions wrong while at the same time discuss the state of online conversation about localization, the joys of game collecting and... THAT trailer. Jon Stewart guest stars. The next show for us is the E3 recap, so please look forward to it, and send us things to talk about if the show's just going to get spoiled beforehand! You can find Anna on Twitter @amprivitere, on the RPGCast most weeks at rpgamer.com or twitch.tv/rpgamer - where you'll also find the archive of Omega Quintet streams. This podcast was recorded on June 5 and was edited by a hay-fever afflicted Donald Theriault.
This recording was meant to be a tribute to Alan Young, but connection issues made it out to Chuck Barris. Let's not mince words: This episode went poorly. The night of saw rampant internet issues, and the editor's come down with some sort of whooping cough, but we still want to get this out before the E3 preview show records. Stephen passed on New Business, so Donald tackles a couple of Vita hits of late 2015 with returning champion Superbeat Xonic and 2016 GOTY candidate (by virtue of a December 22/15 release date) Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel. Austen's big games were another Vita RPG in Ray Gigant (not recommended except for Kairon) and Valkyria Chronicles now on PS4. Also mentioned: Pocket Card Jockey, Project X Zone 2, Dark Souls The Third and Uncharted 4. Most of Whatcha Watchin was taken up by a nearly 50 minute look at RahXephon (which you can get here), but Donald knocked an item off the anime bucket list with Persona 4: The Animation while Austen braved Hideki Anno on the good drugs to watch Evangelion 3.33. On two hours sleep. The poor sod. The Feature discussion gives props to some of the under-appreciated games of 2016 that probably won't come back around, before swinging into a quick temperature check of where console gaming is going this year. Common complaint: Not enough time. In the Mushrooms, we bid farewell to a Disney icon, Disney Infinity, and Disney taking any risks. The next episode is the inevitable - and possibly the last? - E3 preview show, so if you have any bets you want the crew to take, send them to us by the usual methods. The next record date is this coming Sunday, June 5, so think real fast. This podcast was recorded on May 22 and was edited by Donald Theriault. For the record, that was the night Draymond Green hoofed a guy in the nuts.
On the plus side, Donald can put his LA money into a new podcasting setup. Following a very rough couple of weeks, it takes a nice, long episode of Nintendo Free Radio to let the crew decompress. Donald, having run out of fks to give about Langrisser Re:Incarnation -TENSEI- (his review runs down the crimes) for New Business, hits the Sega 3D Classics Collection in search of a good title and actually succeeded. Stephen has some brief mentions including Overwatch's beta, but his big hits are Ratchet and Clank plus Star Fox Zero (+a little bit of Guard from Donald). Austen, nonplussed, completes a long-standing objective before hitting the latest Vita exclusive (for now) Severed and dives into The Magic Circle... with interesting results. Whatcha Watchin opens with a look at life as number 2 with HBO's political comedy Veep, while Stephen takes the law into his own hands with Daredevil (S2). Austen ends up completing a rare tri(de)fecta before running into Tokyo Ghoul and taking in the Ratchet and Clank movie (based on the game based on the movie) and based on box office receipts, he's about the only one. The Feature discussion was going to talk Zelda, but then Nintendo went and lost their damn minds again. Telling E3 where to go (aside from Zelda)? Launching the NX in 2017? Putting Fire Emblem on mobile? A gobsmacked team tries to break it all down. The Mushrooms include the return of the popular "Fun with Preorders" segment, a word about fetishizing crunch, and words of praise for sales. We'll have more to talk about in a couple of weeks, but send us some questions, comments, complaints, etc by responding below, tweeting @nfrpodcast or shooting us an email! This podcast was recorded on May 1 and edited by Donald Theriault.
Contains the longest Mushroom ever Before we begin, a warning: With one exception, we have left the explicit tag on for this one as there are some issues that we need to talk about that definitely aren't family friendly. In New Business, Donald brushes off Miitomo in order to talk about a trio of Legend of Zelda games: Hyrule Warriors Legends, the de facto New 3DS exclusive, a surprising over-performer in Twilight Princess HD, and a brief pitstop in Link to the Past as an actual New 3DS exclusive. Stephen played the Platinum demo of Final Fantasy XV since that didn't take long, then decided to go fishing with Big the Cat for some crazy reason. Austen's menu includes gun-toting roguelikes with insane progression requirements (Enter the Gungeon), a blatant marketing attempt that will do better than its co-production (Ratchet and Clank 2016), a game that is the last gasp of TVTVSportsTV Microsoft (Quantum Break) and a game that don't give a f**k (Plants v Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, which shouts out to K-Log). Whatcha Watchin' includes a superhero run, followed by Stephen getting all up in the Zach Miller department with The Good Dinosaur. Donald counters the superheroes with... wrestlers emerging from cereal boxes devoted to a certain body part in the Shaymin Sports-Ent Minute, before getting thrown out of the show as he's Expelled from Paradise. Austen blasted through Psycho-Pass season 2, but follows that with the long-awaited extended breakdown of The Force Awakens. If you're trying to stay spoiler-pure, you'll need to jump ahead about 25 minutes. Because Whatcha Watchin' went long, we had to forego the feature which would have ran through the state of the Legend of Zelda series - and that's not going to be on 77 either. Instead, it's straight to the Mushrooms which Austen and Stephen tackle quickly, but Donald has the longest Mushroom in history as they break down everything known (at the time) about the Alison Rapp affair. Thankfully, SquareEnix is always around to provide a nice antidote. Our next show will record shortly and is going to break down some recent changes to a host's travel plans, but be sure to get in your comments and questions. Also, the show ran a little late as Donald is editing NWR's Connectivity after an injury, so go check out episode 202 to see his handiwork. This podcast was recorded on April 15 and edited by Donald Theriault.
One day, we'll get to the pay windah if you weeeeeel. Donald was a little under the weather the night of recording, so this is a slightly abbreviated episode 75 - no Whatcha Watchin', for one thing. Instead, Donald fires up New Business with a look at the dark side of Fire Emblem Fates in Conquest, after a big fat wedding in Birthright. Following some quick hits, Donald and Stephen form North American Alpha to tackle the two-man job that is Pokkén Tournament. Stephen gets the hot tag and tackles the original demo for Final Fantasy XV before hitting something quite unusual: A Telltale game that doesn't crash, and a Minecraft game that's only a slight affront to game programming (Minecraft Story Mode). Austen's brief mentions lead into a game that can be easily confused with the Internet in Salt and Sanctuary before addressing the PlayStation 3/Vita/some other thing strategy game Aegis of Earth - with its flagrant ripping off of music. Since there's no Whatcha Watchin', it's straight into a bunch of quick hits including PlayStation VR, the PS4k, rumor cat ownage and a legal case that may never get off the ground involving a game critic. (Disclaimer: Donald started backing Jim effing Sterling SON because of the threat of legal action.) The Mushrooms cover FLCL's apparent return, a rough season in the gastrointestinal area, and the continued heel turn of a noted racist, jack. We're almost caught up on the backlog, with just a GOTY show to go, so drop us a line if you want us to cover something on Interstate '76! This podcast was recorded on March 25 and was edited by Donald Theriault. We need more Brock Lesnar bearhugs in our lives.
We don't get hype or stay hype. As the race to catch up before the fiscal year ends continues, we've got quite a bit to cover in this episode. Stephen's New Business is light with just a little bit of co-op Starcraft 2, as his birth in the world championships slips away. Donald has the biggest game of the episode in the form of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright, including the sudden realization that this is probably going to be his answer to Final Fantasy X for Austen a couple of years ago (though there are a few brief mentions thrown in). Austen is still telling his Digimon Story, but the Cyber Sleuth is upstaged by a rather stacked Prince of Darkness. (Surpisingly, he's not weak to wind, but he is stacked.) Austen has also been wrangling Paper Toads in Mario and Luigi Paper Jam, but has an understated aquatic racer Riptide GP2 as a tribute to the then-unemployed Kyke Bosman. Whatcha Watchin' has the usual round of superhero tomfoolery, followed by Stephen coming up with the unpronouncable and as-of-yet undubbed Concrete Revoluio (knock it off, spellcheck). Donald got around to watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shambala, which seems to have forgotten something small - like a functioning atomic bomb. In other unexpected bursts of energy, Austen punched through the Angelic Layer and found some pretty illogical things waiting on the other side. It's another Big Block o' Cheese Day in the Feature, as Microsoft's console plans, Sony firmwares and a discussion of potential Japan/US relations serve as the warmup for a rapid-fire breakdown of this month's Nintendo Direct that Donald's still not sure he saw everything in. The Mushrooms are so extreme Austen's main recorder broke as we debut the Weird Mushroom and Donald's giving a Poison to a mainline Pokémon game. Episode 75 will be a hair shorter, but we want to know what's after that, so drop us an email or tweet @nfrpodcast to let us know anything we should cover. This podcast was recorded on March 5 and was edited by Donald Theriault. The editor would also like to congratulate friend/former financier of the show Ryan M on his impending nuptuals.
On the 6th week, GameTrailers was revived. A combination of new work, reviews and other fun stuff has kept this off the feeds, but we're going to get caught up - and the timing couldn't work out any better for us. Stephen takes the lead in New Business with a quick Final Fantasy Explorers update, but Donald quickly moves the discussion to another crossover with the then-new Super Smash Bros DLC. After that, the crossovers continue with Mario, Paper Mario and Green Mario's latest misadventures with Mario and Luigi Paper Jam, before Donald ends out with then-recent GBA Virtual Console release Kuru Kuru Kururin. Austen put most of his time into a monster raising RPG - Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. (His Pokémon turn will come.) We draw to a close for New Business with Gravity Rush Remastered and the other yarn-based platformer, Unravel. Whatcha Watchin' is mostly Stephen as he has the musical fun of Galavant, the latest from Syfy in Dark Matter, and the record breaking superheroics of Deadpool just in time for a certain DC flick to lose to it. Donald updates on season 1 of Better Call Saul. so cue up "Smoke On The Water" for the end of that segment. The Feature discussion came as Defy Media slammed the hammer down on GameTrailers, in the middle of Dan Bloodworth's honeymoon no less. We look at what that means for the state of internet video, aside from Donald's weekly Nintendo News Report/NWR @ Nite appearances. The Mushrooms go heavy on problems with certain social media platforms and also takes a gratuitous cheapshot at the Ice Capades, but has words of praise for investigative felines. Although we have our issues with Twitter, we're still using it - hit us up @nfrpodcast or grab the personal attention of the hosts @donaldmick, @cericme or @broodwars64. We haven't given up yet. This podcast was recorded on February 14, and was edited by Donald Theriault. Welcome back, Easy Allies.
We know how Donald opened Saints Row IV now! Like sands through the hourglass, so are the episodes of Nintendo Free Radio. Following a three week recording break, Stephen kicks off New Business with a couple of 71 follow-ups: Groove Coaster 2 and the further misadventures of Meg Ryan in Final Fantasy X HD(er). Donald then moves to follow up with a game he no longer owns as of publishing time, but he cedes to Stephen for most of a long Final Fantasy Explorersdiscussion. Donald picks up with his first GBA game on Wii U that he actually played, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3. Long name, but the e-Reader levels make it worth buying. After that, it's the return of the otome as we rewrite history with Code;Realize. Austen deals with a superstitious, cowardly lot in Assassin's Creed Syndicate - the last one of those we'll see for a while, sadly it means Watch Dogs 2 - before grabbing a couple of titles off PSN in The Deadly Tower of Monsters and Saturday Morning RPG. Also, we have our use of "The Touch" for 2016. Whatcha Watchin' comes out of the break with Donald dealing with a couple of murderous psychos in future Vita visual novel Psycho;Pass and a wrapup on Death Note. Stephen then gets a little investigation in with Rosewood and Elementary. Austen keeps the Baker Street express rolling with Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, before hitting every superhero show in the business. The first of a two-part Feature deals with something we didn't cover off last time; our personal 2016 hype trains. Some will get delayed, some may not work at all, and Donald makes the obvious pick for his #1. Then it's a news lightning round with EA out of E3, GameStop as game publisher and a Sony reorganization. In the Mushrooms, Stephen's Mushrooms get wildly hijacked while Donald casually invites a biological stain to commit a biologically impossible act. (Note that the second half is un-Pokemoned for a very particular reason.) We'll join you again shortly for a much shorter episode, but if there's something you want us to talk about when we record again, shoot us an email or leave it below. Also, keep an eye on our Twitter feed @nfrpodcast to find out when that next recording will be. This podcast was recorded on January 31 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
We'll get into it later as to why there's no GOTY show yet.Giving new meaning to the concept of the New Year's hangover, this is the first of a few episodes to come out over the next few days for reasons we'll get into on the show. But we're back, and the GOTY will be out when the editor isn't engaged with the business end of power sanding. The first New Business of 2016 opens with Donald's take on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Hell of a way to start the year. Donald finds himself longing for a return to Lorule while simultaneously cursing motion controls. Stephen had a bang-up holiday with some amiibo gifts, but also got the lump of coal known as Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival. Just how bad is the game that if it wasn't free to play, Amazon's sure as hell trying to make it that way? Stephen then gives his co-hosts the quality bends with SteamWorld Heist (3DS) and Final Fantasy X (PS4, and now Donald has to complete the tridefecta). Austen has a few brief mentions, including a non-crap phone game, before being heavily disappointed by Trine 3, somewhat impressed with Assassin's Creed Syndicate (even if Unity was made by les incompetents) and somewhat nervous about Harmonix's Kickstarter-fueled Hail Mary, Amplitude. The first Whatcha Watchin' segment of 2016 gets off to a rather shocking start before Stephen brings a touch of class to the proceedings with the Great British Bake-Off. Austen keeps it decidedly British with some more visits to Doctor Who, before Donald completely snaps and goes all megalomanical (more than usual) with Death Note. Watch as we take a podcast... AND EDIT IT.The Feature discussion rang long - hell, the whole show did - but we have the "beloved" prediction segments. How many of Donald's already came true, and how badly were they proven wrong? Does Austen still think the NX is a hybrid for some reason? Why does Stephen want an oven that can play Doom? Plus, special bonus predictions from friend of the show and Listener Mail regular Jason Friedman. In the Mushrooms, we have warnings about house renovations, laments over lost dinosaurs, and Donald's summer travel plans. Hint: It involves a potential visit to The Price is Right (assuming they're taping on his day off).Be sure to drop us a comment below, email us or Tweet us (@nfrpodcast) if you want to mock our predictions, Stephen's amiibo Festival, or anything else! This podcast was recorded on January 10 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
Offer not guaranteed if your hard drive is screwedJudging from the title, you can probably guess one of the main topics of conversation in this episode, but we've got some important warmup acts. Austen opens New Business with the fourth most important game to release on November 10 - noted bomba and reason for executive canning Rise of the Tomb Raider. He didn't pay full price, but Austen's none too thrilled with his purchase. In terms of things he did enjoyed, there's the follow up to March's masochism simulator Bloodborne with the Old Hunters expansion. Stephen got a little FF Type-0 HD in - for $20, so Donald can put it on the board - and then got ready for adventure with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Finally, Donald drops sixty five hours of perspective on Xenoblade Chronicles X, though that conversation will probably come back around next episode.Whatcha Watchin has a brief bit of Angelic Layer from Austen, then a mutual discussion of Doctor Who, the superhero show segment headed up by the dreaded Netflix queue's Jessica Jones, before Stephen finds the Seven Deadly Sins are missing at least two of those features. Donald has a brief mention here in between Xeno-sessions.The Feature was fortuitously provided by a week's delay in recording, as we cover The Game Awards and PlayStation Experience. Also, we didn't bother providing the Pokémon in this episode as, well, things got a little salty after a PR statement was read into the record. The Mushrooms cover a case of Konami not being preceded by an F-word, the joys of home construction and more Valkyria Chronicles. Now, if the PS3 version would just come out digitally...Next episode is the end of the year spectacular, and we want to hear from you! Send your top 5 games (all platforms eligible) or any awards you'd like us to hand out to the usual spots, or just drop them below. Also, if you missed our performance on the NWR Live Telethon for Child's Play, check it out - unfortunately, you've given Donald a get out of jail free card on Skyward Sword should he choose to use it. Until next time, Genei Ibunroku did it right. This podcast was recorded on December 6 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
Might as well get the jokes out of your system.Apologies for the late show, but something came up for the editor. The fun begins in this funny-numbered episode with New Business that has a heavy November 10 focus. Stephen has Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void as the trilogy in five parts continues, and also discusses the (now funded) Indivisible, back when that sort of thing was in doubt. Donald got in some Yo-Kai Watch and a quick Stella Glow update, but the main game(s) are the various versions of Rodea the Sky Soldier from the November 10 brigade. Austen talks the odd RPGs in the form of Ar No Surge+, and finishes with the last November 10 title Superbeat Xonic.Whatcha Watchin' opens with a Parasyte and superhero updates (Supergirl, Flash... and the BluRay of Justice League Unlimited), then Austen brings it home with Constantine - which isn't a superhero show - the Peanuts Movie, and Danganronpa: The Animation.A special double Feature deals first with a bunch of Activision news, including another frickin' cinematic universe before we play the most lethal game of all: Skylander or King Game? Then, Donald tries to defend the indefensible (which he also did in written form) by way of Cloud hitting Smash in the last Nintendo Direct... but who cares, THERE'S TWO DRAGON QUESTS COMING!!! Finally, the Mushrooms wrap it up with a callout of hypocrisy, a deal gone awry and Stephen's beating an important goal. We'll be talking about Xenoblade Chronicles X among other things on the next show, but you can read Donald's NWR review or check out his video discussion with NWR director Neal Ronaghan. But we need a favor from you - the 6th annual NWR telethon for Child's Play is coming up, and we're later than usual this year. If you want to hear us talking about Splatoon and what could come up with Nintendo's future IPs, get to donating! It's for the kids! And if we break the NWR telethon record ($7250), Donald will play one of the most controversial games in Nintendo history to completion. He didn't suffer Majora's Mask last year, so how about some Skyward Sword? This podcast was recorded on November 15 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
Dinosaurs, spooky cameras and gho... phan... Yo-Kai. I thought Hallowe'en was in October? Here's the scariest part about this episode: It's nearly an hour before we live up to our name. In New Business, Stephen begins the Nintendo parade with The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes - a tight little game that really believes in the rule of 3. Donald picks up the baton with Yoshi's Woolly World, which might have displaced dancing atop his GOTY list, then the musical SRPG Stella Glow (if you know where the CEO of Imageepoch is, we'd like to hear it) and talks Level 5 Game with Yo-Kai Watch (demo) impressions. The spoooooooky parade continues as Austen hits Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, before attending a somewhat dead Corpse Party and hitting three Platinum trophies along the way.For Whatcha Watchin', Stephen opens the bidding at Parasyte, which really got under his skin. Donald attempts to make a philosopher's stone with his own viewing of Fullmetal Alchemist (the good one), before snagging a few episodes of Yo-Kai Watch the TV show - which is more Teen Titans Go than Pokemon. Austen realizes that anime was a mistake, so he catches up on a couple of pilots in Ash v Evil Dead and Supergirl. The news round hits Paris Games Week (with enough VR to choke a horse), Nintendo's financials and mobile ambitions, and Microsoft wimping out on reporting Xbox numbers. Again. In the Mushrooms, it's morning again in Canada, but Stephen can't see it because of various updates.Be sure to save Saturday, December 5 on your calendar as we're going to be doing it live one more time (for the kids, y'know). And this year we might be going later than ever. In the meantime, drop us a line below, email or tweet us if there's something you want us to cover on the show! This episode was recorded on November 1 and edited by Donald Theriault. All music and clips provided for commentary purposes. Pray for Donald, who will be trying to edit the next shows while under November review pressure.
Nice little store of money you got there. Pray we don't alter it any further. As the game season winds up - or in some cases, down - Nintendo Free Radio brings a bit of calm in a sea of insanity. Stephen kicks off New Business with Planetary Annihilation, a 2014 real time strategy game in which the end game only involves blowing up planets sometimes, before providing a look at Star Wars Battlefront's beta and yet another frickin' Hoth stage. Donald is next with a beta of his own for The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, which went... poorly. Following a quick trip to the diamond with MLB 15 The Show's Vita version that you can actually take out to the ball game, the team hunts down snacks of various kinds in Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash. Austen has a quick preview of Yoshi's Woolly World before hammering down on Transformers Devestation, the most expensive bargain game in the history of man, and 2014 indie puzzler (now on PS4) The Talos Principle.Whatcha Watchin' is a return to the superhero brigade with updates on The Flash, Arrow and Agents of Shield, then it gets into the oddball anime territory. Stephen watched the eternally long-named Is It OK To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon, and Austen has the combative Selector Infector Wixoss and the... unusual Outbreak Company. The Feature actually was recorded separately in the event of a potential Direct before everyone forgot about quiet periods – but there was still some news to talk about. A potential hostile takeover of Ubisoft by a company who's even worse, microtransactions in $60+ games and a now somewhat out-of-date set of Paris Games Week predictions for Sony hit the board. Then comes the Mushrooms, in which people suffer for charity, customer service works and something Austen and Sony related breaks. Take a drink.Be sure to drop us a comment below, Tweet us or send us an email if there's something you want to see on the next show! This podcast was recorded on October 18, with a portion on October 22, and was edited by Donald Theriault. The podcast also contains a live posterization: see if you can find it!
We're dancing, swinging, and raging at Inafune.Donald makes no apologies for the intro to episode 66, nor any of the many games contained within. He kicks off a nearly all-September New Business with the demo for The Legend of Legacy, a game that somehow got localized along with its spiritual predecessor where eight Dragon Quest 3DS games wouldn't. A rapid fire discussion ends with one half of his NWR comparison feature, Hatsune Miku Project Mirai DX. But then he and Austen get down with the bear in Persona 4: Dancing All Night, which taught them the joy of bonds and the horror of "cubstep". After a couple of quick games on the PS4, the crew migrates to the PC to try out the demo for Mighty No 9 - and it went BADLY. For some more than others. Stephen provides actual Mega Man with recent PlayStation Network release Mega Man Legends before finishing a few weeks of old school with Pac Man Championship Edition DX+.Whatcha Watchin' has a few returning guests from Stephen with Doctor Who's latest series, a followup from last episode with The Awesomes and a quick hit of Elementary. The main event is Austen's look at the recent BluRay release of Fullmetal Alchemist - which Donald did start watching, but only 1-2 episodes at a shot so his impressions will be delayed. Donald *did* finish Vision of Escaflowne, and finds it needs more psychopath.Three weeks is a long time to go without news, so following an examination of Tokyo Game Show including the Persona 5 delay (LOVE IS OVER~) we discuss the joys of Star Citizen, other game delays and the return of the Jill Sandwich possibly coming sometime in the future. (The union voted 96% in favour of a second vote to strike if talks break down again.) In the Mushrooms, we avoid the Wheel of Morality on a technicality and Activision gets raked over the coals, while Donald's 1up has stayed alive for another day.Why not give us an email if there's something you want us to look into? You can drop it here, tweet @nfrpodcast or send us an email! This podcast was recorded on October 4 and edited by Donald Theriault. One game makes you dread humanity. The other game is a Danganronpa. The fall release season is in full swing, and Nintendo Free Radio has some choice cuts from the busy month of September for you. To kick off New Business, Donald has a Labour Day duo of LBX: Little Battlers eXperience, the review title that he ended up buying on his own ANYWAY, and follows it up by staring into the depths of the Bowhemoth in 13AMGames indie hit Runbow (Wii U). But of course, if you want to talk platforming on the Wii U, you play Super Mario Maker, and Donald actually managed to create a level that may not create a vacuum! (Hit it up at 6BDE-0000-002F-E5F9). Stephen keeps the platforming going with a couple of PS+ freebies in Sound Shapes and Grow Home, then Austen snags the other platformer of Mario Maker's release week with Tearaway Unfolded. Finally, the segment ends with a discussion of Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls that touches on some pretty messy subjects, so be prepared to skip ahead to about 1:14:30 to avoid them.A brief Whatcha Watchin has a distinct sci-fi animated bent, as Stephen watched The Awesomes and Austen hit up some Star Wars: Rebels (clumsy random blasters not included). Then it's Lightning Round time as the news includes Pikmin, Pokemon Go, a strange week at Capcom and a TGS preview (note the recording date). Finally, there's a double Poison and a double 1up in the Mushrooms that proves that playing tropes straight is for chumps. The releases aren't going to slow down, but we want to know what you want from the show as well, so drop a comment below, leave us an email or tweet @nfrpodcast. Be sure to check out the NWR forum Mario Maker thread for more insanity as well. This podcast was recorded on September 13 and was edited by Donald Theriault. All music/clips used for purposes of news discussion. Donald got points for two predictions during the editing process.
We're one short for a game of Mario Party 2.The backlog is over, we're back to parity with the Famicast, and the fall release season is about to fall upon us like a tidal wave of bankruptcy in this historic episode of Nintendo Free Radio. Donald opens the New Business proceedings with a visual novel - emphasis on the novel - in the form of one of his most anticipated games of the rest of the year, Steins;Gate. Stephen is paying off a longstanding bet by Walking With Dinosaurs, which may pay off a three year old Twitter promise. Austen takes it to the end of New Business with the teen slasher fic/game Until Dawn and an extended look at Tales from the Borderlands Episode 4 (assume spoilers from about 45m30 until the break music just after the 1 hour mark).Following a brief Whatcha Watchin' with some streets ahead paintball and a NXT update, it's time for an extended Feature discussion on the Nintendo 64 because really, we're contractually obligated to do one for this episode (and not invite Jon/James/Greg). Underrated games, Western influence and just how bad ***** ** really is (it's so bad) all appear. In the Mushrooms, Stephen has to be prepared, Austen's enjoying adventure while simultaneously cursing out Day 1 spoilers, and Donald may be about to reach an Amiibo breaking point. (During the edit of this show, he bought a Captain Falcon, so who knows at this point?)We'll be recording the next episode shortly, and we'd love to have some more Listener Mail, so drop us a line in the usual spots. Until next time, may the way of the hero lead to the Triforce. This podcast was recorded on August 30 and was edited by Donald Theriault. All music and clips used under fair use provisions and for context of discussion. RIP Wes Craven, whose death was announced immediately after we stopped tape.
There hasn't been this much Rare since the last vampire steak buffet.Regular service has almost resumed at Nintendo Free Radio, as the end of the editing backlog appears to be in sight. But first, we have some New Business to attend to, as Stephen and Donald took on respective Wii U 3D platformers in the form of Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Kay Anniversary. Donald follows up the roll of cat puns with some retro brawling goodness in Streets of Rage 2... then Austen takes the wheel on the left side of the road and steers the crew through 30 years of googly eyes with Rare Replay. Everything from the good (Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts) to the bad (Grabbed By The Ghoulies, Snake Rattle 'n Roll, BATTLETOADS) gets looked at as Austen pretty much blasted through the collection in a few days. When not getting his British up, Austen didn't want to see the PS4 get Left Behind so he took a walk on the morbid side with Everybody's Gone To The Rapture (semi-functional run button included).Whatcha Watchin' has returned from summer hiatus: Donald teases the next show and also talks Vision of Escaflowne, Stephen gets praise from at least one of our fans with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, the impossible to search K, and an Orange is the New Black update. Austen is satisfied with a Soul Eater spinoff... NOT.Following a rather emotional Listener Mail from our Canadian friend Jason, the crew looks at recent as-of-recording news with Gamescom, payola, MercurySteam x Metroid and the Mario Maker unlock kerfuffle on the docket. Finally, the Mushrooms cover Donald's employment woes with a bonus #ThanksHarper, Stephen's trouble with process, and virtual reality. Apologies for the downer ending. We'll be caught up with shows before we record another one - the editor would like to thank Labor Day - and we want to hear from you. Email (nintendofreeradio at gmail), tweet or comment below, if you please. This podcast was recorded on August 16 and edited by Donald Theriault. A grand catchup continues as we clear the track from a busy summer. We're getting slowly back to normalcy with these shows, and there's a few games that we need to get off our chests. Donald and Austen open New Business by tag teaming Lost Dimensions, the Vita (and PS3, but really...) strategy RPG that crosses betrayal, strategy and a stupid amount of DLC. After a double shot of bird watching with Hatoful Boyfriend and Badlands: GOTY Edition, it's time for Donald to stare down the beginnings of his favorite game of all time in Earthbound Beginnings. To say the least, it hasn't aged well. Stephen continues the retro kick with Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards before diving into the world of children's card games actually marketed to children by playing Pokemon TCG Online. Austen finishes with a GameFreak title of his own in Tembo the Badass Elephant before dealing with a couple of adventure games in Life is Strange Episode 4 (SPOILERS from 50 minutes to about 56 minutes) and episode one of the 2015-16 King's Quest titles. How many cheap deaths did Austen find? Tune in to find out.Whatcha Watchin' was scrapped due to games, but that gave us time to address Listener Mail in which we tackle the question of choice as multiplatform owners. (Well, most of us.) After that, it's another News Roundup covering game updates, Dragon Quest, Nintendo's financial, and the introduction of Democracy to the anarchy of PlayStation Plus. Finally, the Mushrooms include a Keiji Infaune takedown, getting stuck in Ohio, and late breaking news that the Final Fantasy XII remaster was actually born (in PITTSBURGH, of all places!)The goal is to be caught up on shows by Labor Day or thereabouts, but drop us an email as we try to return to Famicast parity, Tweet us @nfrpodcast or comment below! The podcast was recorded August 1 and edited by Donald Theriault. All music used under fair use provisions.
We wanted to do this one right.EDIT: We REALLY wanted to do this one right: the original version of this episode had a major audio issue with the intermission song, so we've replaced that version with a new version that has the music fixed & an extra Iwata clip at the end for good measure (for the sake of maintaining existing download links, it has the same name). Audacity lives to screw up edits. Please Understand.A combination of factors conspired to create a delay in posting this episode, but we wanted to make sure it got the treatment it deserved. This episode was the first one recorded after the passing of Satoru Iwata, so we spend the first part discussing the life of the late Nintendo president and where things go from here. Following that, an abbreviated New Business covers off Splatoon's last pre-update Splatfest, Tales of Graces f, and a collection of games including a unique puzzle game, DLC and walking simulators.Whatcha Watchin' deals with Food Fighters, the last comic book movie for a while (as Donald rejoices) in Ant-Man, and a couple of interesting animes in Noragami and K. Some of those are actually safe for work. Our Feature discussion was timed to the fact that this was going to be our third anniversary show based on a normal release schedule, so as usual we board the hype train for a look at the games we're excited for the rest of the year. Some have come out, some have hit their embargoes, and Donald may have picked games for dead systems in protest. There's also a brief bit of Listener Mail, though it is kind of hard to come up with a game that hasn't been remade. In the Mushrooms, it's Devil's Third drama, a curious missing feature, and a whole load of positive news from... Sega? Thanks for listening, and we'll be getting caught up over the next few weeks. Be sure to check out Donald's appearances on the Player One Podcast and see him every week on Nintendo News Report, including a special Iwata tribute show in which James Jones sports a suit. (Well, most of one.)This episode was recorded on July 19 and edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. All music/clips used under fair use and for context.

Starring squid kids, fireworks and a man dressed like a bat. Please note: The show was recorded on July 5, and as such does not touch on the events of July 11. We will address the passing of Satoru Iwata on the next show, but hope we can give you a bit of happiness in the meantime. The first show recorded after E3 is always a wild one, and 2015's post E3 show is no exception. In New Business, Donald has some rapid-fire impressions of the Nindies @ Home games and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D from the man who thought the original was the GOTY in 2012. However, the big story is that Donald has finally become a kid now (or a squid now, we can't tell) and both he and Austen embedded themselves on opposite sides of Splatoon's Splatfest I: The Fur Has Flown. After the mandatory Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate segment, Stephen decides to blow up a little bit of the Earth in a July 4 revisit of Fantavision, before blowing up the rest of the planet in Fallout: New Vegas. Game breaking bugs presumably not included, thanks to four and a half years of community QA. Speaking of things that could've used some QA, Austen has been getting his Batsune Miku on in Batman: Arkham City (SPOILERS FROM 57:50 TO 1:04:51) and some rapid fire quick hits that include the return of the greatest trailer in gaming history. The biggest fear with the post E3 show is with no Whatcha Watchin' for six weeks, it gets a little... crazy. And so it goes, with Stephen hitting SciFi's recent original Ascension by way of DUN DUN DUN and a Parks and Rec chaser. Donald finished off his own government show, but the stakes are a little higher when you're in The West Wing. Thankfully, Last Week Tonight provides a modern perspective on many of the same themes and has a British person. Austen fires through a load of insanity with Nobunagun and two seasons of SPAAAACE in Knights of Sidonia, while keeping things grounded with Pixar's perpetual bridesmaid Inside Out.We got Listener Mail this week, and it wasn't from our friend Thomas, so we tackle “stumble on” games that we might have missed back in the day. Then, it's a Lightning Round of post-E3 chatter as we cover Nintendo's recent investor QA, NOA PR repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot (and this is before the Devil's Third incident), and Batman: Arkham Knight's troubled PC release. The Mushrooms cover off cord hell, security updates making things extremely inconvenient, and Donald's amazing July 4 weekend.Next episode will feature our thoughts on the passing of Satoru Iwata and more – including possibly the annual summer Top 5 games list, time depending. We'd love to hear from you for either one, so send them to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com, leave a comment here or send a Twitter message to @nfrpodcast. Until we meet again... can we really understand? This podcast was recorded on July 5, and was edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. All clips used under fair use protection.
So E3 happened, despite our best efforts, and so we gathered to talk about it. And we went late into the night. Like, Donald was still recording at 2:30am local time. We were joined by Travis Broady (@trbroady) to go over our bulk predictions, so we've got so much the show had to be split into two parts. Please make sure you have both.In the first part, we cover off Oculus, Nintendo's super Sunday, and then the US based press conferences: Bethesda, Microsoft and EA. Much blood, sweat and Pele ensued.Following the break, it's the foreign representation of Ubisoft, Sony, Nintendo and Square-Enix - though really, the Sony conference was replaced by a prominent internet messageboard that's not NWR's.We also cover off the predictions and just what we want as well as some quick listener mail before we give our final grades. But there's so much here, we didn't even get a chance to cover the Nindies@Home or the PC conference, and one of them we actually wanted to.Once regular service resumes, we'd love to hear what you thought of E3. So send us an email, tweet @nfrpodcast or leave a comment below. This podcast was recorded on June 19/20 and was edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. The Explicit tag is well-earned.
FEATURING: James, J.P. Corbran, and Donald Theriault break down all the Nintendo news from before the Digital Event. We cover leaked 3DS ports, new Smash content, the Nintendo World Champonship, and more.We break down some non-Nintendo news from Monday's announcements that may be important for Nintendo fans.
Fight through the space zombies and you too will find our E3 predictions. And some of them haven't been proven wrong yet! Like the flu, E3 comes around once a year and you can only inoculate yourself against it. Nintendo Free Radio starts the healing process with New Business as usual, though Donald's review game Lord of Magna: Maiden Heaven is a bit unusual for its tag cloud of bowling, maids and Valkyria Chronicles. Donald and Stephen then knock off a couple of RPG updates with Puzzle and DragonZ and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate before we kick off a round of Wild and Crazy Kids with Splatoon. (For the record, Donald's copy arrived the day this posted.) Austen did have to make the choice of kid v squid, but he also provides his updates on The Evil Within and The Witcher 3 before marathoning ALL UNITS... except Wars and Reach... in the now-larger Halo: Master Chief Collection. Following the break, Whatcha Watchin' takes its annual pre-3 vacation for an extended Feature in which we predict every E3 digital event and otherwise. Though to be fair, NOBODY could predict the Oculus gong show, so we didn't even try. The format involves some neck-sticking, and some of the predictions have already been proven right (Dishonored 2!) while others are already wrong (Scalebound). We also have a round of listener predictions and some last Nintendo questions. After that, it's a serving of Mushrooms as Austen finds the new home of noted bot Wario64, Stephen wants a feature and Donald is POed at Sony for a reason you can probably guess. The next show is the E3 wrap, which is going to get a very rapid turnaround - but you'll have a few days to get YOUR comments into the usual sources (leave them below, email us or tweet @NFRPodcast). See you on the other side. This podcast was recorded on June 6 and was edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. All music and clips used under fair use. Prepare for a salt overdose.
At least one of the causes should be done.Spend the end of your Memorial Day with a Nintendo Free Radio that may last until the next one! Three weeks of New Business kicks off with Donald's newest obsession, the Puzzle and Dragons 2-pack. It would actually come back around, in fact. After an update on Shovel Knight across two platforms and just as many cheat codes, the time comes for Donald to confront his worst fear - Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains. Amazingly, his NWR review isn't the lowest for the game on Metacritic anymore. After a couple of updates, Austen and Stephen command the floor for the game that turns normal podcasters into Maechens, Bloodborne. It's long, and we're pretty sure it actually managed to cover ground left uncovered by other shows. Austen's keeping on the masochistic RPG train with The Witcher 3, and finds the downgrade concerns to be highly overblown. Finally, a parade of shooters ends with Stephen outsourcing his New Business again as the whole family took a ride on the Splatoon train - though Stephen's more interested in the 8-bit action.Even with Donald bowing out, Whatcha Watchin' also has a lot of catching up to do. Stephen's Netflix queue introduced him to the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, while he inoculated Hulu with Naruto SD: Rock Lee and Friends. Then, it's all the superheroics our Archie-loving editor could stand as the NWR movie/TV threads get summarized by the Supergirl trailer, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Arrow and The Flash. Finally, Austen shows his softer side a bit by looking at the number one film of the weekend, Disney's Tomorrowland.A quick Feature covers off some of the news of the week, including Konami, Nintendo v SquareEnix in the battle of who could care less, amusement parkery and... Valve? Finally, Stephen makes up for lost time in the Mushrooms, while Austen is not too thrilled with an old friend and Donald has apparently missed his appointment with Mrs. Landingham.Next episode is ALL E3, ALL THE TIME BAYBEE! And we want to hear from you now that no less than seven companies and a concept are all vying for your frothing demand, so drop us an email, tweet your comments and hype train boarding passes to @nfrpodcast or leave a comment below. Until next time, Donald has some eggs to turn into Rare Candies...This podcast was recorded on May 23 and was edited by Donald Theriault. All music and clips used under fair use and for context of discussion.
We're going to ketchup on our listener mail come hell or high water. Please note: Due to an issue with Donald's audio, his track sounds a little... odd. We do apologize for any concerns and steps have been taken to ensure no issues in the future. So what happens when you have one listener mailer send a lot of feedback on every episode you've ever done? Well, you throw an audible and bring him on the show. It really helps that Thomas Robertson, our most consistent emailer ever, also happens to be Donald's current roommate, so getting him set up was a snap. For New Business, Stephen leads off with the lagamorph murder simulator Xenoblade 3D, in which we suggest a new strategy: Let the CPU tank. After that, Stephen actually outsourced his play of the Mario Kart 8 DLC to young Zane - thankfully, the rest of the crew has gotten to plaid. Donald quickly covers off his review games in the form of Ultimate Angler, Battleground Z and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker, then it's Thomas's turn. After the contractually obligated Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate update, he tortures Donald with Metroid: Other M, stumbles across a Game With Gold in Castlestorm (played on Wii U) and gets demonic on his own with the perpetually discounted Shin Megami Tensei IV. Austen got into some of the DLC for The Evil Within and the Borderlands Handsome Collection, but his major game is a game that Thomas is familiar with, and has received high praise on the show before. Like #3 on a GOTY list.Whatcha Watchin gets the superheroics out of the way early with Stephen having seen Avengers 2: Age of Ultron immediately prior to recording. Donald has an announcement about future segments, while Thomas revels in wanton destruction by asking one of the obvious questions: Will It Blend? Austen finishes with the Playstation Network's non-union superhero equivalent series in Powers and dips into an old enemy for some Sword Art Online, before finishing with another round of Farscape.Of course, we can't have Thomas on and not deal with a huge backlog of Listener Mail. Among the topics broached: Who's worse between Square and Sony, just what the deal with the podcast countdown is, and what Metroid game Donald would play at the required gunpoint. By this point, Stephen's recorder was running out of space so it's a hurry-up offense in the Mushrooms, which include TEH URN, a Konami update and Donald being able to do his job while Stephen takes a quick spin.Although it won't guarantee you a spot on the show, we'd love it if you sent some listener mail or other feedback in - you can tweet us or drop an email, or even leave a comment below. Be sure to check out Thomas on Twitter and the Streetpass Halifax group as well! This podcast was recorded on May 2 and was edited by Donald Theriault. All music and clips used under fair use provisions. Did you know that someone did a mockup of Metallica singing Kill the Wabbit?
We're out from under the backlog, finally. Now that everything seems to be (mostly) settled in the editing bay, we present an abbreviated edition of Nintendo Free Radio. Stephen has a quick Monster Hunter update for New Business, while Donald brings tales of miracles in Smash Bros (which can be viewed here) and how not to applaud Mario vs Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars. Austen has a lot of business to attend to, including a trip back to the past in Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures for Wii U, an update on Sunset Overdrive's final DLC that is one fragile eagle from a Donald auto-buy, and hits some of the character elements of a major PS4 RPG of March... we're talking about Final Fantasy Type-0, not MYSTIC QUEST. He's not a fool. The main thing watched this week is the Nintendo Direct, so after a brief Zelda delay chat it's straight into the Feature to talk Direct. Everything from SMT x FE and Fatal Frame's existence to the Virtual Console to Mario Kart brought to you by From Software is on the menu. And then there's the Mushrooms, which land on vehicle trouble, a tribute to another dead Canadian retailer, and more Robotech teases. Stay tuned after the outro for a bit of non-Thomas listener mail and something completely abhorrent.Be sure to check out Donald's recent appearance on Radio Free Nintendo, and drop us a line - we promise if it's good there'll be no mockery. Leave it below, tweet @nfrpodcast or email nintendofreeradio at gmail dawt com. Until next time, please understand. This podcast was recorded on April 4 and was edited by Donald Theriault. All audio provided under fair use provisions. Stephen doesn't actually need four new cars, but if you want to share the wealth...
And other revelaitons from a crazy breakAs Nintendo Free Radio emerges from a drama-induced backlog, we hit a bunch of March's finest. Leading off in New Business is the new-apartment dwelling Donald, who has a couple of flawed portable RPGs with Codename STEAM for the 3DS and Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines. After early impressions of an infamous Smash tournament and the remake of the year, the baton is thrown to Stephen for a Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate update and information on the trippy 3DS puzzler Ketzal's Corridors, now available on Club Nintendo for coins if you can access it. Austen gets off the portable train by hitting a whole shedload of Resident Evils, indie puzzle masochism simulator Ori and the Blind Forest, and the FFXV demo starring a giant enemy Ramuh who attacks the planet for massive damage.A brief Whatcha Watchin' has Donald passing, Stephen quick-hitting Fish Kings and S3 of House of Cards, before Austen catches up on Agents of Shield and the new Transformers: Robots in Disguise cartoon. (The Kotaku article referenced: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2015/03/the-new-transformersis-off-to-a-shaky-start-and-thats-just-prime/).The Feature was recorded a few weeks ago, but does feature a load of speculation about Nintendo's future in lieu of certain St Patrick's Day announcements, as well as a post-games Konami and how the hell Sony can sell 20 million systems when all their first party stuff gets delayed. For the Mushrooms, it's all about the changes, including some companies refusing to change.55 is in the can and will come out soon, but we can always use some feedback - tweet us @nfrpodcast or just drop it below. And you might notice something different about the NWR thread...This podcast was recorded on March 21 and edited by Donald Theriault. All clips/music used under fair use discussion.
If that's true, then this episode's going to be a laugh riot in 10 years. Honestly, we weren't even sure if this episode would even record because of various circumstances, but we're kind of glad it did so we could get some things off our collective chest. For New Business, Stephen and Donald have both fallen down the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate rabbit hole - including the dreaded mutual hunts - and their responses are pretty much what you'd expect. Donald follows up with another New 3DS showpiece in the free trial of Ironfall Invasion, followed by a dab of payola and a cheap shot at Nintendo's future plans before getting his ink on in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. Austen finally has a chance to go off on The Order: 1886, and apparently he's the only one who bought that full freight and liked it (ed. – Weekend Confirmed Alumni Jeff Cannata & Christian Spicer have my back. :P ). After quick-ish stops with the Screamride Demo and the 2nd of Resident Evil's many Revelations, it's time for a not-for-children's card game in Hand of Fate, and the 2nd part of a long discussion of Baten Kaitos Origins (continued from 52). Warning: Here be spoilers. For Whatcha Watchin', Donald finds out if they're doing phrasing anymore thanks to Archer Vice, while Stephen has been answering the immortal question of How The States Got Their Shapes. Amazingly, the History Channel produced something recently that doesn't involve aliens (we think). Austen reports on the horror and boredom of the 2015 Academy Awards, and also lets us in on if Tiger & Bunny fared better Rising than the Dark Knight. Finally, there are the obligatory DC/Marvel comic book TV minutes with Marvel's Agent Carter, The Flash, and The Arrow. With the controversial release of The Order fresh in our minds, we turned the Feature towards the dilemma of determining game value in an era of steam sales, flash sales, $20 price post-launch price drops, used games, and economic recession (and yet a time when games are cheaper than ever). The Mushrooms, well, kind of summarize why quarter 1 of 2015 should be declared non-canon as soon as is humanly possible (with maybe two or three exceptions), but also why there could be hope yet for Kickstarter. Finally, we top them off with a celebration of the late, great Leonard Nimoy, who passed away the day before recording. We promise the next episode will be much happier, especially since we'll be caught up from the backlog, so why not drop us a line so we can drive 55? You can email us (nintendofreeradio@gmail.com), tweet @NFRPodcast or drop it below. Until then, live long and prosper. This podcast was recorded on February 28, and was edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. Fear is their bacon bits.
Last time on Nintendo Free Radio, Western 3DSs still had one analog, Telltale was the only company doing episodic adventure, and Persona 5 had no gameplay footage. Thankfully, all of those things have changed. For New Business, Stephen played a game we don't have a clean joke for in PSN flash sale victim Monster Monpiece, then threw on Strike Suit Zero in an attempt to cleanse himself. Donald went Western indie in more ways than one with Gunman Clive 2 which marked the last game he played on the 2DS, as the New 3DS arrived and there was much rejoicing (as well as Codename STEAM demo and brief Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate demo discussion). To wrap his segment, Donald gives good news about a good Nintendo system's games being playable on Wii U as he grabbed the download of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and returned to the sweet embrace of EAD Tokyo. Austen has been wasting his Wii U on a system that clearly can't stack up, but has the very void-infused Vita platformer Nihilumbra, and the clearly moneyhatted adventure game Life is Strange to fill in good game content. After a round of Now Posted on motorcycles (you have got to be ****ting me - Ed), a brief round of Whatcha Watchin' ensues. You won't like Stephen when he's angry, but you may like Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Austen has an update on Log Horizon and extended impressions of Thundercats (2011), while Donald shows that when you need legal advice, you Better Call Saul. The Feature this time 'round is a super-charged Lightning Round originally codenamed "Twenty Minutes of Hell". Topics include PAX South, JRPG Week, Nintendo's multimedia endeavors and somehow turning Marble Madness into a MOBA (as Mark Cerny cries out in agony). The Mushrooms include two sad farewells, a host pulling a Jeffersons and Nintendo's horrible precedents. We'd love to hear from you on anything somewhat on topic, so drop it below, emal us (nintendofreeradio@gmail.com) or send it to @nfrpodcast on your local fire-breathing Twitter machine. Also, if you would like a nice followup to the Wizard talk from Episode 50, the good Dr Metts recently broke down the musical career of former child star Jenny Lewis on Discover Music Project (http://www.crosstawk.com/newbusiness/2015/2/14/discover-music-project-episode-65.html) so plug in for an hour and a half of great music discussion. This podcast was recorded on February 15th and edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. All clips and music copyright their respective owners. Yes, we’re working on catching up on the podcast backlog.
Double the Editors Means Double the Power We're very unlucky to have four+ hour recordings, but that’s nothing 50 hours in the editing room can’t fix (the resulting mental breakdowns are a different story)! Stephen had a light New Business due to illness, but he and Donald team up to get wiped out by the Brock Lesnar of Japanese monsters Gore Magala in the demo for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Donald makes up for the game content by needing a revocation of his Citizens of Earth experience until a patch, so he called up a lawyer for Phoenix Wright Trilogy on 3DS. After that, the grand New Year's resolution begins with very early impressions of Tales of Symphonia HD. Austen has a double remake of his own with Resident Evil HD (PS4 which evolved from some system we don't talk about which evolved from PS1) before finally getting Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII out of his system. It's a complicated game, so it gets a good while. Following that is the strangest Now Posted ever, and that's saying something. Listener discretion is advised. In Whatcha Watchin', Stephen was able to recover from a nasty flu to attend the Nashville The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddess concert and have a disturbing meeting with one of NWR's finest, before plowing through a lot of Fairy Tail, Parks & Recreation and the latest example of comic oversaturation, Marvel’s Agent Carter. Austen got a little TNT on with The Librarians and also tackled Log Horizon, which is basically Sword Art Online without the squick. In the interest of time, Donald had to keep it quick, but he did finish Cowboy Bebop and thanks to a Netflix miracle, saw the movie that nearly spawned M*A*S*H II, The Interview. It's a very rare triple Feature, as discussion of the January 14 Nintendo Direct began a week of Nintendo trolling that also included the mercy killing of Club Nintendo, before a countdown of the group's Top 5 Games of 2015 that could have easily gone to 10 or even 20. The Mushrooms star the flu and international finance, but Austen can't hear the complaints over the dulcet tones of Liberi Fatali playing in his head. We'd love to get some listener questions for the next show, so drop them below or send an email to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or tweet them @NFRPodcast. Also, be sure to check out Donald pontificating about the Greatest Tank Battles on Connectivity 165 (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/39496/episode-165-alex-sandwich), or check out Pocket Console (http://www.pocket-console.com) for a massive 3DS-focused Direct writeup, Monster Hunter demo impressions, and a review of 3D After Burner II! We love Christopher Walken as Captain Hook. He's so bad. After a long holiday away from the microphones the NFR team rings in the new year with a milestone episode that will simultaneously delight and frighten all those who hear it. For New Business, Donald opens with hardware impressions as he picked up a 2DS and can't wait for the XL to return, before completely misinterpreting a Kenny Rogers song (it's "condition", not situation) and talking about the obscene deal he got on Akiba's Trip (Vita). Stephen's New Business falls on the disappointing end for the rest of the team, as he discusses Vita Game of the Year in an absolutely insane universe Child of Light, before being somewhat disappointed in Civilization: Beyond Earth. Austen's main events feature Voltorb pinball (Pokemon Pinball Ruby/Sapphire) and, apropos of the feature, dealt with some wizard action with Frozenbyte's Trine series. Now Posted is back, and there was much rejoicing. Whatcha Watchin' gets off to a bit of a weird start, as Donald completely forgets the purpose of the segment, but Serial is a good enough excuse for it. Following that it's a long anime block as Donald also started Cowboy Bebop for the first time ever before handing the torch over to Stephen for the Bebop team's next work, Eureka Seven. After that, Stephen sits back and spins us all a wondrous Fairy Tale. Austen has some anime of his own - Patema Inverted, Haibane Renmei, and Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. And even with those titles, he managed to find something weirder. For the Feature, in honor of the 25th anniversary of both its theatrical release and the release of the thing it was created specifically to promote... as promised, we all watched The Wizard. Come hear us wax rhapsodic on the movie once guaranteed to never appear on Box Office Poison under threat of stabby, and see who is actually positive about the movie. Finally, the Mushrooms get a little out of order as the crew tries to make sense of Sony's insane pricing for everything and Ubi's continued inability to do QA. At the end of the show, we guessed right that Iwata would cash In the Please Understand contract, so that's going to be part of Episode 51. Anything else we should include? Email us (nintendofreeradio@gmail.com), tweet @NFRPodcast or drop it below. Until next time, bow at Stephen getting 50k in Double Dragon. A delayed podcast eventually releases. A bad podcast is bad forever. (Original recording date: May 18. Not kidding.) Yes, we readily admit this episode took a loooooooooong time to edit. But we hope the content is worth the several months of baking this nearly-lost episode had. Donald's New Business begins with one of the ten best games of 2014 in Kirby Triple Deluxe, in which you can almost hear Austen considering the game. After that, Donald hits the links and finds Mario Golf World Tour to be... par for the course. Finally, Donald provides proof that yes, he did in fact play a freaking otome game in the form of Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsegumi. Stephen was heavy with the roleplaying as he got into the mix with Atelier Totori Plus, but saves most of his praise for the game that would have been his Game of the Year if it had come out a few months later, Tales of Xillia. Austen brings it to the break with the final wrapup of Final Fantasy X HD - yes, lightning was dodged - and the only old game he'd play all year that counts, Captain America: Super Soldier. Also, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is there for some reason. In Whatcha Watchin', Donald wound his way through the byzantine requirements to bring you word of the early days of the WWE Network, while Stephen clocked in a little Adventure Time. Austen's group of shows is superheroic, as you might expect, with the BluRay releases of Spectacular Spider-Man and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. At the time of the recording, friend of the show Neal Ronaghan was getting a lot of heat for his Mario Kart 8 review - if only that would be the stupidest threat of the year. Anyway, since the plan was to have this out around the time of Mario Kart 8's release, the Feature is a look at the Mario Kart series. The Mushrooms contain change recommendations for a multi-billion dollar franchise, dancing on the grave of motion gaming... and vinyl siding? Also, a rather important medical update. In case you missed it on the GOTY show, we're talking The Wizard soon. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the movie or anything connected to it, so tweet it to us @nfrpodcast, email it to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or leave it below! Ringing in the New Year and Holiday Cheer with Games Near and DearThe last minute games are under the tree, the hosts are scattered to the four winds, and we leave 2014 with a collection of the best - and worst - in gaming and other televised entertainment. As always, the year-ender starts with a countdown of each host's top 5 games of the year. Did Austen put a Nintendo game in his list? Could Donald have a top 10 list without a Pokemon RPG? What in tarnation did Stephen pick? (Hint: One of his games is confirmed on sale during Christmas.) After the countdown comes some other awards, ranging from the Cluster-*ditto* Of The Year to Best Re-Game and more. After that, we run the countdown back to 3 and tackle the year in Whatcha Watchin', which is probably the most predictable list of the night. After a brief bit of podcast year-in-review, we look back at the predictions we made on the last show and continue to live up to the guarantee: All predictions wrong or your money back. Finally, we predict our 2015 GOTYs as a lead-in to a massive prediction segment - you know it's big when even Donald is in double digits for his prediction count. This will wrap up the year in Nintendo Free Radio, but we can proudly announce that our most prominent blank will be filled in New Year's Day, as the long-lost Episode 37 will be released. See why it's the nexus of the show in general. Also, next time we have a new episode, for our dramatic episode 50 we will be watching a movie that recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, In honor of the 25th anniversary of what it was made for... THE WIZARD. We hope you'll join us as we poison the well on the movie too hot for Box Office Poison. This podcast was recorded on December 14 and edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. Have you ever been (Playstation) Experienced? As the stockings are hung by the chimney with care in hopes that Saints Gaben, Reggie, Layden and Nelson soon will fill them with deals, we come to discuss the stragglers coming across the finish line. Stephen has a few brief items for 2015 to start New Business in the form of Guilty Gear Xrd (demo) and the alpha for Heroes of the Storm, but also has several words for a game that maybe Nintendo was right to reject? Donald polished off Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and then turned his RPG energies to Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, with a brief stop at the ultra-charming Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Austen has a double-header (phrasing) of Telltale adventure with Game of Thrones and Tales from the Borderlands, as well as a couple of shooters - the award-nominated Wolfenstein and an UbiSoft game that you can actually get the best ending in in approximately 12 minutes.Whatcha Watchin' has a few rounds of anime from Stephen's Netflix queue - The Irregular at Magic High School, My Little Monster and Noragami, while Austen goes to the dogs with Bolt and since the TV/film industries can't produce anything else, we have to talk about the Arrow v Flash crossover. Donald's WW is entirely centered around The Game Awards, with all of the world premieres and offstage awards that ensue. Also, Korobeniki with lasers. Following that, we have an extended look at the Playstation Experience, in which a shocking acknowledgement was made. The Mushrooms include a tribute to a gaming pioneer, an old target getting 1uped for trolling, and SPAAAAAACE.By the time you hear this, we're in full Game of the Year mode. Stay tuned to this feed for the word on what games this year were TOTALLY AWESOME... as well as our plans for Episode 50. Not just referring to innuendo anymore.Sick of hearing family or Joe Buck on this Thanksgiving? Drown it all out with some Nintendo Free Radio as the team aims to keep you out of a turkey coma. For New Business, it opens with a mutual admiration society for two of the biggest Nintendo releases - the Mario Kart 8 DLC and Super Smash Bros 4 (Wii U), and extended impressions are provided for both. The plan was for a third mutual game, but the Wolf Among Us discussion spiraled off into its own brief episode. Stephen has a Fantasy Life update, Donald returns to the land of tropical trumpets with Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, and Austen has two major PS4 releases in... Little Big Planet 3 and Chariot. (Stop laughing.) Also mentioned: A game that may be worth a lot of money for Donald someday. In Whatcha Watchin', Stephen has continued down the wild road of Wakfu, keeping other things from his Netflix queue at bay. Donald has been getting his game show gimmicks on with a brief report on Price is Right's Big Money Week and the biggest event of the year in quizzery, the Jeopardy Tournament of Champions. (The full postgame chat Donald mentions can be found here.) Austen has gotten heavy on the CW with more on Arrow, Flash and the not-Dr. Metts-approved The 100, before bringing it home on Big Hero 6.The Feature topic is a somewhat brief overview of the "next-gen" consoles (PS4 and Xbone) entering Year 2. Someone's cruising, someone's dumping and someone's abstaining - you'll find out who. The Mushrooms feature a return even more unwanted than Denis Dyack's that might get Donald in a boatload of trouble and/or Twitter spam, as well as slamming of Smash and Blizzard love that comes from some rather unusual places.Next time around is the last regulation episode before Christmas, and we would love to hear from you with holiday memories or plans. Email, tweet or post 'em here, and don't forget to send in ideas for categories you want to see for the Game of the Year show as well. This podcast was recorded on November 23 and was edited by Donald Theriault. Six Dragonite and a Ditto and it DOESN'T happen on Route 34? Color me shocked. The day after the live telethon for Child's Play, the crew gathered to discuss things with more traditional funding. New Business begins with a couple of tag team matches (playa) as Stephen and Austen test PS4 2.0's best non-sleep related feature in Shareplay, bringing new life to old local multiplayer games (even if the devs don't agree). To follow up, Stephen and Donald get a (Fantasy) Life and tackle the game from two wildly different perspectives. Donald then goes for the other end of the Shinovi spectrum by representing his (brother's) hometown in Vita prison life sim Freedom Wars, and after a brief warning about the Sonic Boom 3DS demo ends with early gushing over presumptive GOTY from all right-thinking outlets, Bayonetta 2. Austen sold out to The Man and picked up an Xbone, which explains the Explicit tag, and had a blast with Insomniac's revenge fantasy/Dreamcast tribute Sunset Overdrive and a couple of other mentions. Including a sequel to a game with the rare double release of WiiWare and physical DS - which Donald got wrong. For Whatcha Watchin', Stephen leads with a brief Slugterra update before diving into quality animation in the form of Big Hero 6, and the extremly rote Freezing. Donald keeps the assassination theme going with the recent Keanu Reeves vehicle John Wick and still can't wrap his head around Bayonetta: Bloody Fate. Austen has some issues with some anime dubs - Hellsing Ultimate and the Cardcaptor Sakura movie - but is a little happier with the CW's best show since Smackdown, Arrow.A brief double-feature touches on the Nintendo Direct including the announcement Donald was dreading, the announcement Austen was apathetic toward, and the lack of an announcement to get Stephen excited. After a quick debrief of the telethon segment - thanks to everyone who helped it clear $6,000 and get us catching prehistoric predators with Zach Miller - it's on to the Mushrooms for the return of old friends and Stephen's terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad week. It's coming up on the end of the year, and we wouldn't mind your ideas for categories for the end of the year show - you know it's coming! Email us, tweet @nfrpodcast or leave them below! Until next we meet, please make sure a prominent internet messageboard doesn't eat us alive. This podcast was recorded on November 9 and edited by Donald Theriault. Live from Mossdeep City, it's the segment nobody asked for!The fall marches on, but we still had time to squeeze a few more words out of your friendly neighborhood editor before the deluge of November. New Business opens with Stephen following up last episode's odd Netflix selection of Wakfu by playing the massively multiplayer SRPG that inspired it. A brief Smash 3DS update gives the crew an excuse to go over the 50+ Things That Make Smash 3DS Obsolete special, and then Stephen doubles back to finish with a Tales of Graces f update. Donald has another demo to talk about in the form of the special Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire demo of no MegaSteelix before starting a two-part exploration of Platinum with the thing they took to keep the lights on, Legend of Korra. Austen wrapped Alien Isolation and after some ultra-violent brief things, needed to unwind... with Peggle 2, of all things. Cue screaming.Following Now Posted, the rumor was Whatcha Watchin' would be brief. And if you believe that, you also believe it's about [censored]. On tap; Stephen's Devil is a Part Timer, Deadman Wonderland and Arrow, Austen's The Flash and Heavenly Sword while Donald passed for time.Well, time and the feature. In an effort to get Donald to have something on the waveform, we opened the floor to all of you for an Ask Me Anything segment. And some of you actually delivered. As a result, there's a near-half hour of grilling Donald on subjects far and wide. For time reasons, we had to cut a few questions, which Donald helpfully took to the blog to answer. Following that, it's an extra large helping of Mushrooms because some returning champions done goofed hard. Our next appearance will be live and for the kids, but only with your help! Head on over to the main page for the NWR Live Podcast Telethon for Child's Play and give what you can to a worthy cause before November 8! Just because we have $2k at press time doesn't mean you can make Tim Hudson do all the work! This podcast was recorded on October 26 and edited by Donald Theriault. When all you have is games, everything looks like a way to spend moneyIt's October, which you can tell by the leaves turning color, and the NFR team staring down bank loans as EVERYTHING is coming out. In fact, the oldest full game discussion in New Business is for a game released on September 26. Stephen opens with the PS4 version of Dust: An Elysian Tail, which brings its unique art style and Microsoft-published characters to Sony for the first time, before puzzling through another cross-platform PS+ freebie in Pix the Cat, once described as "Snake means Chu Chu Rocket on acid". But his main event is extensive discussion of pretty much everything in Smash Bros 4 (3DS). Donald is worrying about releases to come as he ripped through the Bayonetta 2 demo in order to "git gud", and took his frustrations out on that by bombing some Dodongos and other things in major league 2014 GOTYC Hyrule Warriors. Austen has some big AAA games to round out, hitting wife simulator Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor, the creepy and kooky Alien: Isolation, and... Sherlock Holmes, Crimes and Punishments? Yes, it's still valid.Since New Business was so long, that clearly doesn't leave much time for Whatcha Watchin', so it boils down to three things: Wakfu, Attack on Titan (all of S1 spoiled) and the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. There's a brief plug for a couple of things to be mentioned below, and then the Mushrooms as Donald clearly doesn't understand the point of these things, Austen is pleased by Sony paying off an E3 tease, and Stephen provides some nice trivia questions. The first thing to mention is that next episode is a very special "Ask Donald Anything" feature, and we want ANYTHING you want to know about Donald that doesn't involve the three taboos. Email your questions to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com, tweet them to @nfrpodcast or post them here and you'll be entered into a draw to win some valuable DLC for Hyrule Warriors. (Entries are due before October 26.) The other is that it's coming up on Child's Play show time, and NFR is back in the saddle - we're going to be talking crowdfunding, but only if you give! Drop your donations on the NWR page and be ready for a wild ride on November 8!This podcast was recorded on October 9, and edited by Donald Theriault. All music is copyright their respective owners and used under fair use protection. We don't want to have to resort to Sarah from Iowa City.
As so often happens, when you have a good discussion you want to make it its own release. And that's exactly what happened when Tyler Ohlew, owner/operator of Stick It In Your Pocket, took some time to join Stephen and Austen in grilling Donald on why this game is his 3/4 Game of the Year. Stunning revelations abound in this distubing, distressing, despairing... class trial. This podcast was recorded on October 1, was edited by Donald Theriault, and may also appear on episode 153 of Nintendo World Report Connectivity. Unlike a normal NFR show, the podcast is uncensored and contains extremely mature themes. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
Alternate Title: "Destiny Loot Leaves Stephen Shook"Gird your loins and get your buttons/stylus/what have you ready, as NFR kicks it old school. In New Business, Donald leads off with discussion of Theathrythm Curtain Call, the blown out version of an early NFR favorite, which dovetailed into a discussion of Final Fantasy XV: What Is Love when the internet randomly crapped out during recording. Although the full game is out right now, all we had at recording time was the demo of Super Smash Bros 4 (3DS), so you get limited early impressions of the game so powerful it needs a system rev to handle it. Stephen's only been playing one thing, and you'll be stunned at the issues Destiny had. Austen has a few quick hitters, but the main game he played for reasons clear at the end is Wii U Indie Puzzle Platformer With Unique Artstyle (tm Player One Podcast) Teslagrad. The results will definitely shock you.Following a congratulatory Now Posted, there's a heavy Whatcha Watchin' component as well. Stephen leaves his co-hosts in a James Jones position while discussing Slugterra, before showing that Donald is not the only Idiot Abroad and getting in a NBC-approved Food Fight. Donald's participation in this segment has usually been Pointless, but he did bring Madoka Magica back for a full drubbing. Austen meanwhile, has wrapped up Cardcaptor Sakura and entered the tenth layer of hell - phone tech support - in The Devil Was A Part-Timer.Since the feature had to be saved for the end, it's right into the Mushrooms from there as we slam acquisitions, discontinuations, and lazy localizations. We don't ask for it to come that way, but we work with what we're given. As for the feature... since the show was a) going to run past our time limit, and b) contained a lot of things not really appropriate for a clean show, our discussion of Danganronpa 2 was actually spun into a separate podcast that MIGHT be familiar to listeners of other Nintendo World Report shows. You can find us and Tyler Ohlew discussing Donald's Game of 3/4 Of The Year right here. This podcast was recorded on September 28, and was edited by Donald Theriault. All music and clips copyright their respective owners and used under fair use protection.
Duck Hunt Dog: CONFIRMED FOR EPICNow that it's September for real, games are allowed to come out again, so why not let Nintendo Free Radio take you down the well-worn path? Austen leads off New Business in a stunning upset, as he examines the arena combat expansion Infamous: First Light and the beta for Mighty No 9. But the main event is the rematch of Hope vs Dis Bear in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. The truth bullets are flying, but there are no full-on spoilers. Donald has no objections to court drama, but prefers his with a side of British class in Professor Layton v Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney. After that, it's a double dose of reasons why Mighty No 9 is a 2015 game as the crew fires on Azure Striker Gunvolt and its free (until the end of November) 8-bit demake Mighty Gunvolt. Stephen's Destiny has to wait, but he does complete a tridefecta with Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and gets heavy into crafting systems in Tales of Graces F (the F is for freaking complicated). We bid someone a "fond" farewell in Now Posted, then bypass Whatcha Watchin in order to give the Nintendo news (up to taping date) a full rundown. Mario Kart 8, the Smash leaks, and the New 3DS all go under the microscope, as well as Sony's pre-Tokyo Game Show press event that really bears down on trying to revive a dead system in Japan, and also had some Vita stuff. The Mushrooms hit the joys of retailers who don't care, when cross buy goes horribly wrong, and when social media goes right. In case you haven't heard, we're all a-Twitter now; cozy up to @nfrpodcast for show updates, a quick way to send feedback, and the occasional code we're too lazy to cash in or picture of a host getting drunk. We'd love to hear from you for future shows, as well, so give us a look. The podcast was recorded on September 7 and was edited by Donald Theriault. All music and clips are used under Fair Use provisions. Donald will be drinking, but is waiting for his import to arrive because by god, he's doing it right.
We have normality. Repeat: We have normality. Anything you can't deal with is therefore your own problem. After delaying the show a week to get in some European trade show action, Nintendo Free Radio has returned to brighten your Labor Day. Stephen opens New Business on a somber note by leading a discussion of the extremely controversial Depression Quest, but the controversy is set aside in favor of discussing it as a game and teaching tool. Continuing the theme of psycho-analysis, Stephen dives into the odd world of Doki-Doki Universe. Austen returns to the Cold War with cross-platform stealth action game Counterspy, completely sells out by talking about the three good mobile phone games that aren't Twitter (tm Dr. J. Metts), and finishes with a rare family-friendly PS4 game in The Last Tinker: City of Colors. Donald was clearly in a violent mood, so he takes his frustrations out on Persona 4 Arena and Ultra Street Fighter IV with a couple of brief stops on Vita fighters as well. DON'T PANIC - Now Posted's back (ok, panic a bit), then it's down to Whatcha Watchin'. Stephen attended the Ultimate Car Build-Off while diving into the 1980s BBC rendition of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and finishes with a look at Hunter x Hunter. Donald keeps the anime train rolling with the beloved cyberpunk talker Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, while Austen hits Cardcaptor Sakura (dodgy East Asian English dub included), Muppets Most Wanted and a brief Korra update before discussing the number one movie in the nation that stars a former world heavyweight champion, Guardians of the Galaxy. Think we'd ignore Gamescom? NEIN! Although it didn't get the full E3 blowout, the spate of game announcements and removals provides plenty of fodder for discussion. Also, you may slap the nearest EA executive for using "selfie" and "all the feels" in the same presser. The Mushrooms throw shade on hoarders, mourn the passing of Robin Williams, and celebrate the return of Cowboy Bebop. There's not a lot of Nintendo here, but that's probably going to change next time - why not send us your thoughts on the Smash leaks, Mario Kart 8 add-ons or the New 3DS? Send that over to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or leave it below. Until next time, eat, tweet, delete, repeat. This podcast was recorded on August 24 and edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. Wait, Austen's playing WHAT???A historic episode of Nintendo Free Radio awaits your ears this week, in more ways than one. Donald Galactic Punts New Business to start off, as he actually finished Persona 4 Golden, but finds the Golden-added content to be slightly tarnishing. Needing a break from all that, he dives headlong into the 2014 Club Nintendo Platinum reward Game and Wario, which spirals off into a discussion of the Platinum and Gold selections - and if you're still waiting for the last minute to decide, that minute's coming. Austen picks up from there with Kirby Triple Deluxe and finds......wait...*rubs eyes*...no, that's not a typo. Austen played a Kirby game. In order to maintain his cred, he also played Vita indie rougelike Rogue Legacy and finds it to be far better than Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, though we damn with faint praise. For reasons that will be clear in the Mushrooms, Stephen has had other things to deal with, so he leads the whole crew including the dry Donald into an extended look at the Destiny "beta".After Now Posted's full, glorious return Whatcha Watchin' takes another turn for the weird. Donald caustions the group that Sharknado 2 is barely worth a New York minute, while Stephen's possessed Netflix queue landed on harem (Tenchi Muyo GXP), space (Knights of Sidonia) and classic (Death Note). Austen also took a trip to space with Star Trek: TNG (Season 3) and is better for the experience after the Blu-Ray transfer. After an extended Listener Mail (which you can read in full here), the crew looks at some recent gaming controversies - though really, is there any other kind of news in gaming - touching on things like games as a service, preorder DLC, adblockers and the apparent KotakuPolygon personality swap. A heavy set of Mushrooms wraps as Stephen and Austen take different tracks to discussing tough life situations, while Donald just wants some damn folders. With Gamescom coming, there's bound to be some things to talk about, so why not drop us an email at nintendofreeradio at gmail dot com if something catches your eye? This podcast was recorded on August 3 and was edited by Donald Theriault. All music is used under fair use protection. Earthbound and Mandatory Fun is the best entertainment combo you can get for twenty bucks if you haven't paid the Black Knight everything yet..
You seen Stephen? Yeah, me, him and Funky Student... we're forming a jazz trio. There's a giant storm coming, but the calm right now allows us to pick things off the ol' backlog. For New Business, Donald returns to 2012's finest loot-based Zelda clone by playing the Wii U version of Darksiders II. Is it worth your time, or just another example of #THQuality? Stephen has a classic RPG on the docket, as he returns to high school for the slow-starting Persona 4 Golden. Austen brings a few games around with the surprisingly sane-named Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition, returns to the Vita lemming platfomer Dokuro, and accepts Charlie's Challenge by taking a few shots at Sniper Elite v3. Also mentioned: Which game developer is actually Tommy Wiseau.Following an important call to action, Whatcha Watchin' returns to the realm of ramen and gigabytes of images as Donald stares into the abyss of Welcome to the NHK and finds some disturbing similarities staring back at him. Stephen goes to the vegetable and risotto dimensions In quick-hitting MasterChef, Cutthroat Kitchen and Next Food Network Star, while Austen finds Space Dandy and The Legend of Korra (season 3) to be quite dandy, but the security around Korra to be decidedly not.Since this is the closest we'll come to an anniversary show, our Feature flashes back to episode 1 with a look at 2014's games we're excited for - and we actually blew it out to a full top 5 list, with no repeats. The conclusion: If you tell AAA games to get knotted, there's some major league games coming for the rest of the year. The Mushrooms look at pricing concerns in anime and shooter expansion packs, but also supplies words of praise for Butt Butt.We still want to hear from you for feature ideas, game discussions or corrections (thanks Thomas!) so drop us an email at nintendofreeradio at gmail dot com or leave it below. This podcast was recorded on July 13 and edited by Donald Theriault. All music is used under fair use provisions and for context of the discussions. Satan is still weak to wind. The podcast was reuploaded on July 21 to correct a clipping error.
On Second Thought, let’s not go to the NWR Funhouse. ‘Tis a silly place. So we haven't had a normal show in a while, thanks to a certain trade show. And given that there's no feature, it's still not your normal edition of Nintendo Free Radio. But we sacrificed the feature at the altar of seemingly every 2014 release. Donald's shopping list for New Business: Tomodachi Life, Mario Kart 8 and Shovel Knight (with a dash of I've Got To Run and a grip of Pushmo World). Stephen hits the past with Magicka and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, but the big one is the "alpha" of Destiny, the new Bungie joint that is going to dominate the industry for the next decade. Austen's Platinum brigade: the Vita's Sly Collection, Watch Dogs (underscore withheld until the WiiU version actually comes out), Valiant Hearts: The Great War, Murdered: Soul Suspect (RIP Airtight Games), and Mind=0. Whatcha Watchin' returns for the first time in a LONG time, and it's turning Japanese as well - Donald (and Austen) both saw the first half of the first season of Attack on Titan, and there be spoilers for that. Stephen's Netflix queue fires away with returning chump-ion Chaos;HEAD, Blue Exorcist, and Madoka Magica - which is apparently the Spec Ops of anime? Austen completes a Psycho-Pass, throws up some bricks with the Lego Movie, and Warehouse 13 goes down in 5. Also, there's no basketball pun for Game of Thrones, so we're not trying. After that... it's straight to the Mushrooms as we complain about Club Nintendo and Playstation Now, and someone has a double 1up. We will say no further on that subject. The next recording is going to be episode 40, and we're doing a 2nd half preview since nothing comes out until mid-August - so we want to know the ONE game you're hyped for that's coming out the rest of this year. And yes, someone has already responded with 2015, so let us know before the next recording July 13! Email it to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com, send it to the guys on Twitter (@donaldmick, @cericme and @broodwars64) or leave it in the comments below! 90% of the industry once again comes out next February. We apologize for the inconvenience, but not for the snark. There's a Great Big Beautiful 2015...Shining at the end of these Delays! In a year where the industry has collectively decided to let us all focus on the backlog, there are still a few games announced at E3 that managed to turn heads in a sea of violence and delays. The NFR team, in various states of readiness, looks back at the various press conferences in heavy detail and tries to read the tea leaves about what's going to happen. Grades are handed out - and does anyone get an F, or worse? This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault, Stephen Shook, and Austen Parkin. All music contained is used under provisions of fair use.
It's a show of infinite possibilities for release In 2015.(Editor's Note: We are aware that Episode 37 hasn't posted yet. It will post very shortly, or it too will end up in 2015.) Tragically, there's no getting off of this train we're on and it's headed right for the row of bombs that is the Electronic Entertainment Expo. But first, Nintendo Free Radio picks up some New Business as Stephen sees if Scram Kitty (And His Buddy On Rails) is worth wasting one of your nine lives on before supplying us with an Atelier Totori update. Donald was introduced to the life of Cmdr Raina Shepard in Mass Effect, but BioWare needed a real quad to create an unwinnable situation for him. Austen has a few games, including Transistor, a game which ends up being similar to something that has come up in another segment, before Stephen and Austen pull into the pits to discuss Mario Kart 8.But that's not why you're here, as the second half sees Whatcha Watchin' chucked in exchange for what two members of the team will be watching the week after this releases - press conferences and Digital Events. Predictions are made, systems are villified, and the winner is predicted (Best Buy Canada). To close out, there's still time for a serving of piping hot Mushrooms including the fate of team based shooters on PC, new PCs to play the old shooters, and chldhood memories that need your help ASAP. Next time we meet, it'll be after the E3 press conferences. WIll it be a great big beautiful tomorrow, or just another year to pare down your backlog? Let us know what you think in the comments below or drop us an email! This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault. All music contained is used under provisions of fair use. We're not going to be this short again for a while.
No, we didn't get temporarily possessed by Anna Marie - there's just a lot of RPGs to talk about.Time: 2'51"33Some days, you just need to sit down and vent a spleen, and so Nintendo Free Radio returns to air out its body parts in elongated glory. Stephen is up first in New Business with a look at a Kickstarter project that actually managed to reach its goal... the programming/wildlife board game Robot Turtles, which may or may not be Frog Fractions 2. In actual video game news, Stephen also got on the Tales of Xillia train a few months back and gives you an extended look at the game that spawned a $130 LE. Donald has a Final Fantasy X HD update with a little history being made, then proceeds to go HAM on his Vita memory card and hits a couple of platformers in the news lately before finishing with extended impressions of UbiSoft's Child of Light - a game that actually came out at the usual price Ubisoft games get bought at. Austen was in on FFX and Child of Light, but saves his main RPG ire for South Park: The Stick of Truth, which in true Obsidian fashion managed to crash before he could boot the game. After a special all-Talkback episode of Now Posted, Whatcha Watchin' is animation-free for the first time in a long time. Stephen discusses Gold Rush Alaska and Burn Notice, while Donald lets his Google Glass freak flag fly on a visit to Silicon Valley. Austen has the super-heroic (and super-average) duo of Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 to finish things off. For the Feature discussion, since three Vita owners represents a quorum the trio looks at the future of Sony and Nintendo's dedicated handheld business in light of some bad NPD results. Is the only thing keeping the VIta alive in Japan Akiba's Trip? Possibly. You'll have to listen to find out. Finally, the Mushrooms feature a purchase Stephen will enjoy, a purchase we KNOW Austen will inevitably regret, and a purchase Donald's really conflicted about. Unfortunately, E3 is coming up, and we want to hear from you in the run-up to the big show - so drop us an email, will ya? Looking for some more inside baseball? We aim to please. There's been a rush of episodes lately, but now Nintendo Free Radio appears to be back at standard operation. For New Business, Austen leads off (surprisingly) with quick hits on "it's-not-a-puzzle-game-Donald" Towerfall Ascension (PS4), which is pretty good for an Ouya port, and Tecmo's newest dungeon crawler-destroyer Deception IV: Blood Ties. Austen follows up with brief updates on three games of recent vintage: Final Fantasy X HD, Infamous Second Son and Knack. Stephen hasn't had a chance to play much, but after a quick trip to the Castle of Illusion he does lead the crew down the aisles of Sony's Easter weekend flash sale. (Note: We are well aware this segment includes complaints about the lack of Vita support. It literally came and went during editing. Blame Sony for its inclusion.) Donald wraps with a game fresh off its one Shine Get Moment in the NFRIT, Beyond Good and Evil and surprisingly hasn't encountered a single matchstick in Profesor Layton and the Azran Legacy, but has encountered back loot luck in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. In Whatcha Watchin', Austen finally did get around to seeing Captain America: Winter Soldier, but saves most of his time for classic combat/harem anime Ranma 1/2 (Season 1) and CBS's take on Sherlock Holmes in Elementary. Stephen takes a few minutes to provide catchup on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D before grabbing the latest frightning find from his Netflix... Turbo FAST. Turns out, rocket-powered snails is as insane as it sounds. Donald's turn covers Miyazaki's return to child-friendly fare in Ponyo before being reminded of a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, as well as acknowledging a recent passing and the end of an era. The Listener Mail had a couple of extended pieces, one posted without comment on our website and the other addressed in detail, as Shawn wants to know how the show is edited. War stories are traded and we hope it makes clear why these episodes can take a while. The Mushrooms address gaming parodies, Square re-releases, and plagiarists getting awards... though we do risk redundancy. Want to give us some more mail to chew on in extended detail, or just comment in general? Leave a comment below or send an email to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com. Until next time, eat, sleep, and end the streak. This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault, and all music is used under fair use protection. We'd tell you to follow the buzzards but they have a bad social media presence.
Neither length of episode nor PC near-death experience can stop this episode from launching! For this episode, we have made two pieces of history. The first is that we have a guest from outside the NWR family, as RPGamer forum admin/RPGCast regular Anna Marie Privitere lent several hours of her time to talk shop with us, and the second is that the editor nearly split the show in two until the final product wouldn't set a record for longest episode ever.First up, it's all New Business led off by Anna's look back at the alchemic action of Atelier Meruru (you can see her entire playthrough here) and finds out if they passed Soul Society in the DS tactical RPG Bleach: The 3rd Phantom. Austen picks up the RPG torch with early impressions of Final Fantasy X HD and the multi-ethnic group action of Infamous: Second Son. Stephen goes to the wall for impressions of Pokemon Battle Trozei, a game so addictive it literally kept Donald up all night, before clicking into Diablo III: Reaper of Souls and infecting parts of the rest of the show. Finally, Donald proves that even shonen soccer has crap officiating in Inazuma Eleven (3DS), before dropping a truth bomb (and making a business deal) on Yoshi's New Island. For the second half of the show, it's everything else's time to shine. Anna opens with the Lifetime comedy Drop Dead Diva, which somehow manages to combine 2014's Whatcha Watchin' into one show, and also watched some Bleach to follow up from earlier. Donald engaged in time travel with a wrapup of Steins;Gate, while Austen finished off his Robotics;Notes from 32 and managed to squeeze in the entire run of Veronica Mars including the Kickstarted movie. Stephen finishes with another selection from his haunted Netflix queue, bring Sword Art Online from the land of the Magic Waifu before a discussion of Captain America: Winter Soldier dives headfirst into a discussion of the role of movies in the Marvel universe. For the Feature Discussion, there is an extended look at recent statements made by SquareEnix on the nature of their business going forward (source article translation: http://www.siliconera.com/2014/03/31/bravely-defaults-success-west-making-square-enix-rethink-jrpgs/) along with some information on the difficulty of getting niche titles on Virtual Console from someone who is asked about it quite frequently. An extra-large order of Mushrooms finishes the show as Atlus, EA, Blizzard, and frequent punching bags Sony all get rapidly fired at.The plan for next episode is to catch up on some Listener Mail, so would you kindly drop us a line to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or leave a comment here? You can also find Anna most weeks on the RPGCast or streaming RPGs - follow her on Twitter @amprivitere for updates on her streaming schedule. This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault. All celebrity voices are impersonated. Poorly. This podcast took forever to edit and should be listened to by everyone. There's something slightly... off... about this episode of NFR, and we can't quite place what it is. Is it Donald leading off New Business with a western-developed 360 RPG in South Park: The Stick of Truth? If not, maybe the game this one ACTUALLY borrows from will frighten you. Austen picks up the western torch with SquareEnix's Thief reboot, before violating the first rule of NFR and talking about an iOS game... thankfully, it's tied to PS4 launch platformer Knack, so it's OK. Sort of. Stephen finishes with impressions of the soon-to-go-F2P MMO Wildstar and Vita hunting game Ragnarok Oddysey. There's a third game for Stephen, but we'll get to that later. After Now Posted sells out, Whatcha Watchin' hits up recent controversy as the sanctity of game shows is placed in Jeopardy by a ten-day champ, Stephen enrolls the crew in The Guild and gives spoiler-free impressions of Japan's biggest anime hit in years, Attack on Titan. Austen keeps the anime love going with the answer to the most important question of all: Is This A Zombie? Finally, we return to late 80s animation for An American Tail on its recent BluRay release. In the Feature Discussion, Lightning returns... and this time, it doesn't get outsold by Bravely Default. Topics on the dock: Game of the Decade, the role of spokespeople, game pricing, and games we're sick of hearing about. The Mushrooms deliver a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week for a frequent target, live Mario Kart in Austin, and hit some "recent" game announcements... and stay tuned after the outro, as Stephen played Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and the crew breaks into an extended, spoiler filled discussion of the game's merits before executing a noted NWR forum loon. To which we say, he had it coming.Want to help spread the word about the show? Use our new, actually easy to say shortlink at http://bit.ly/nfradiopodcast or drop a review into your podcatcher of choice if available! Perhaps you could send us an email as well; the address is still nintendofreeradio@gmail.com. Until next time... From the First World Problems Department, there were WAY too many games in February 2014!Editors Note: This is the first of two recent NFR episodes that have been stuck in the editing backlog. The other should be out within the next week or so.We're warning you up front: There's a lot of games up in this here episode, and the oldest one we cover is a little over six months old. Stephen opens the bidding in New Business with Level 5's rhythm comedy 3DS game Weapon De Omasse Shop, which will no doubt be on sale in an eShop near you shortly, then blasts away our expectations for Killzone Mercenary and finishes by Russian into the PS4 version of Strider. Although nobody asked for Donald's list, he takes Deus Ex: Human Revolution (WiiU) for a spin before tackling Bravely Default and recommending one character in particular for a good booting. To finish, Donald goes ape over Retro's greatest game ever [citation needed], Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropcial Freeze. Austen gets his inner vampire on with Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2, revisits his old friend Elle in The Last of Us: Left Behind, and takes Donald to trial for not playing enough Danganronpa. After a brisk visit to the forums for Now Posted, the group calls an audible to try and finish the show quickly so Stephen blasts through a considerable Whatcha Watchin' list that includes the following: The incredibly redundant Legend of Legendary Heroes, Kenchi: Mightiest Disicple, Kaze no Stigma, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, House of Cards (S2), The Lego Movie and an Olympic update. Donald shows off a wrestling show you DON'T want to end up on with Botchamania, and plays the role of Oracle of Delphox as a critical eye is cast upon the Mankeys in Twitch Plays Pokemon. Austen has a brief stop at Steins;Gate sequel Robotics;Notes, in which you can apparently build a walking mecha for US$10,000. Find out how on this podcast. Listener Mail had to be reduced for time considerations, but the crew does present advice to a listener in Germany who lacks console experience and wants to try Chrono Trigger, as well as looks at their history with PC gaming. Finally, the Mushrooms call out Nintendo, Spike Chunsoft, Sony and Namco and we dare you to guess which one ends up with the 1up from that group. We still want to hear from you, so send any feature ideas, feedback and fun to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or leave it in the comments below. Also, Donald didn't completely ruin a recent episode of Radio Free Nintendo (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/36690/episode-372-mystic-quest-is-not-okay) so be sure to listen to that when you're done if you haven't already! This episode was produced by Austen Parkin, Stephen Shook and Donald Theriault. All music is used for discussion purposes under Fair Use provisions. Praise be unto Helix. And yes, we know this episode was extraordinarily late.
There was a feature here. It's gone now. Please understand.Into every life a little podcast must fall - for certain definitions of little. Nintendo Free Radio is back with a brisk jaunt through the world of games, starting in New Business with Donald's first non-douche early impressions of Tales of Xillia. After that, come along to the Pokemon Bank and marvel at the service's eerie similarities to (insert crap bank of choice here) before skating away at extreme speeds in OlliOlli. Austen keeps the handheld train rolling with Everyday Shooter, then transitions into Vita puzzler Surge Deluxe and cross-platform psychoanalysis program Doki Doki Universe, before taking aim at villianry in episode 2 of Telltale's Wolf Among Us. Stephen, not to be outdone, takes another crack at Walking Dead and finds the rarest specimen of all: A platform where Walking Dead exists WITHOUT game-breaking bugs.We always think Whatcha' Watchin is going to be short, then the recording happens. Donald has brief impressions on perennial NFR favourite Steins;Gate, Austen follows up on Clannad with the postscript Clannad:Love Story and finds out that Justice League: War is good for absolutely nothing before finding something decent to watch in Kokoro Connect. Speaking of decency, Stephen continues to make the tragic mistake of leaving his selections up to the horndog Netflix algorithim, as his contribution is the "life" laden Sekirei. We swear, this time around the Feature Discussion was going to blow your mind, make you change your pants and lead to Mother 3 on Virtual Console. Unfortunately, Iwata chose to cash in the Please Understand contract right after recording, so the crew gathered immediately following the February 13 Nintendo Direct for a round of off-the-cuff impressions. Find out how much Donald spent that day (a lot), if Stephen's on the X bandwagon (maybe?) and if Nintendo going free-to-play is sinking to new depths. Finally, the Mushrooms have a farewell to podcasts, a call to action, and a tribute to... high speed network cable. Yeah, it's been that kind of week.Next time 'round we're going to be emptying out the listener mailbag, so be sure to get your questions in to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com - or leave them below. Until next time, consider this... can love bloom on a baseball diamond? This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault. All music is used under fair use protection. Mrgrgr.
Ecchi, grinding and tanuki – just another episode from the Land of the Rising Sun As the post-Christmas game drought begins to wind down, let Nintendo Free Radio be your guide through the perils of this little industry of ours. Stephen leads off New Business with impressions of the game that unleashed Kickstarter on the world, Broken Age before getting his cheap tower defense on in PixelJunk Monsters HD… and given his television preferences, it’s no surprise that he also picked up eShop food service sim Brunch Panic. Donald, having only now gotten over a long cold, had no choice but to see… Dr. Luigi! Also, he attempts to make Austen sick by talking Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on behalf of the Anti-Social Gamers of North America. Austen counters with the power of broken street dates with Tomb Raider: Enhanced Edition and folklore by looking at the DLC for Muramasa Rebirth before wrapping with impressions of the FFXIII: Lightning Returns demo that include some content that may have jacked up the ESRB rating. Following the insanity and possible quality content of Now Posted, Donald opens Whatcha Watchin’ with a Price is Right episode that hits a little close to home for one member of the team, followed by a trip to the Danger Zone with Archer. Stephen demonstrates the danger of letting Netflix pick anime for you as he hits in sequence Welcome to the NHK, Heaven’s Lost Property and Okami-san And Her Seven Companions, while Austen knocks Clannad, Good Luck Girl! and Hunger Games: Catching Fire off the backlog. This time around, the Feature is the impending tidal wave of games that will both amaze and bankrupt you. The crew gives predictions for what will actually sell and what will end up in a bomba bin by Memorial Day, and someone has apparently developed an immunity to the stupid naming conventions of the Atelier series. In the Mushrooms we mourn the passing of Justin “JewWario” Carmichael and net neutrality, among other topics. Want us to discuss something on the show? Have an idea about just what the hell a “quality of life” platform is? We want to hear it! Send it to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or leave it below. Until next time, be sure to keep coming for more episodes (PHRASING – Ed). Editor's Note: My Apologies for the late episode. Listener discretion is advised. This episode may not be safe for your sanity. Hot off a holiday break and fresh from "The Happiest Petri Dish on Earth", it's Nintendo Free Radio's first recorded episode of 2014. And we have a big release right out of the hopper in New Business, as Donald recounts his experience with Disaster: Day of Crisis before heading into his comfort zone with the demo for Square/Nintendo's upcoming life-destroying RPG Bravely Default. Stephen had some more time to play over the holidays, so his card is filled with Pac-Man's Ghostly Adventure (bad cartoon opening warning), the closest thing you'll ever see to F-Zero in this decade with the Vita's Wipeout 2048, and gets his platforming on with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. A side discussion of DGOTY Super Mario 3D World is also there, with a stunning character reveal. Austen brings it home with final thoughts on Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, the PSP (yes, they still make those) visual novel Sweet Fuse... and a game so horrible and awful it had Donald spamming the "drop cow" button. We're not going to spoil it here except to say it has come up on extremely early episodes of the show and never fails to bring the house down. Or in this case, the beef. Whatcha Watchin' is pretty packed for just a 2/3 activity rate, as Stephen gets his explosion on in Mythbusters, updates us on life in the bakery with Cake Boss and goes north of the border with Lost Girl. Austen, ever the Disney fan, looks at a fanciful version of the development of a Disney classic with Saving Mr Banks, gets some OK advice from an unlikely source for Pushing Daisies and finishes in an elementary fashion with British import Sherlock (no major S3 spoilers, but 1-2 are fair game.) With a new year comes the need to clear out the inbox, and so we have some Listener Mail. First is a listener who you may know from the telethon, Donald knows personally, and who could one day become our Tony Reali. As well, we play Gaming Hot Stove in this apparent off-season for releases and send games to developers who might treat them right. Finally, the Mushrooms feature love for a key video feature and a hack for avoiding massive photography charges should you ever have to go to the aforementioned petri dish. The inbox is empty, so would you kindly email nintendofreeradio@gmail.com with what you'd like to talk about? This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. Despite the best efforts of Microsoft and prominent ISP *redacted*, it's obsessive PS4 detail time!U R NOT (red)E for this much Playstation discussion in this episode of Nintendo Free Radio! But first, New Business goes heavy casual as Stephen tackles the combination of Nintendo HD upgrades, Wii Sports Club and Wii Fit U for the low, low cost of NOTHING. Donald keeps the casual theme going with his own free-but-for-his-time game in Doberman of Duty (note; we're retiring the dog puns) and reps the platforming with Sonic Lost World. Austen finishes out the PS3 with the last great platformer Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus, and a cavalcade of brief mentions with a little heavy detail on Batman: Arkham Origins. After the (un)wanted return of Now Posted... we scrapped Whatcha Watchin' because Austen and Stephen spent most of their time watching firmware updates and downloads on their brand new PS4s. Everything from the purchase experience, including Austen breaking the speed of light itself, to the UI and launch lineup is covered in minute detail (while Donald sits back with a mai tai and curses the editing). There was still time left for the Mushrooms, but there's a heavy poison theme as bricked PS4s, medical drama, the ability of *redacted* to hook up quality internet and the Jacksonville Jaguars bring a dark cloud to the proceedings. You won't believe who has the only 1up, nor what it goes to, but you'll also understand why the editor went off his meds during the editing. On November 23, we're doing it live (for the kids) but not without your help! Nintendo Free Radio has been asked to contribute to a 3DS report card, but you have to earn it - so get over to the page at NintendoWorldReport and boost the total so we can go live on November 23rd! Also, next time around, it's Virtual Insanity as they're talking Earthbound - so send your thoughts to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com before Thanksgiving! This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault. All music is used for discussion purposes under fair use. *redacted*, once someone finds a new job, you have my permission to die.
Recovered from 25 yet? Too bad, here comes another one.In the last episode of Nintendo Free Radio before the next-gen stragglers drag their systems smoking to the finish line, we offer warnings and advice for the future. A largely handheld-focused New Business is led off by the vanguard of the handheld master race, as Donald opens with the explorative platforming of Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Beware of homicidal renegades and - if you're like Austen and playing the Vita version, game-ending bugs. Donald follows up with the cathartic handheld murder simulator, Hotline Miami (PS Vita version), which may help him clean his fridge for Soul Sacrifice in a most unusual fashion. We hope you don't have any objections to the brief mention of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Duel Destinies, since it came out a short time before recording. Stephen picks up Donald's Poke-torch as the best way to handle demonic swords in Pokemon Y is discussed, before Austen surprises everyone with a look at Donkey Kong Country Returns (IN 3D~). Finally, Austen brings it home with future Vita (and some mobile phone platform nobody cares about) adventure game, The Wolf Among Us. Is there a chance Telltale could get Austen's GOTY 2 years in a row?Whatcha Watchin... how would we describe that? Well, let's just hit the content: Stephen has more food reality with The Next Great Baker and oddball sci-fi with Iron Sky, Austen has Sakura Wars: The Movie and Last Exile: Fam The Silver Wing, and Donald's watched more Looney Tunes than should be allowed by law. There's two parts to the Feature this week, as our first frequent contributer Pete asks about who should go indie, and we debate briefly just what the hell that means. In part 2, we pull SquareEnix out of the Mushrooms with a look at their Final Fantasy Committee, whether the series needs saving, and what they can do to try and stop bleeding money. Think we're crazy? Email us and tell us! (nintendofreeradio@gmail.com) Finally, it's another round of Mushrooms with a construction update, laments over game delays... and an unexpected guest appearance that will blow your mind. The next time we talk, the PS4 will be out, and there might be some actual journalism on that episode. We know, we're shocked too. Also, it's coming up on that magical time of year when Nintendo World Report does it live for Child's Play, and we are going to be involved... so once the page goes up, get to donating. It's for the kids, y'see. This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault. All music and clips are used for discussion and clarification purposes under Fair Use provision. The cold lasted over a week.
We come not to bury the 360 and PS3... well, most of us, anyway. Hur-RAY, hur-RAY, hur-RAY, step right up and get your Nintendo Free Radio on for the 25th time! (Not actually the 25th episode, but who's counting?) New Business sees Stephen step up for the casuals with a couple of things the others wouldn't touch with a 39.5 foot pole: Windows Phone word game Wordament and Blizzard's new children's card... er, trading card game, Hearthstone. You might have heard of Donald's New Business, since it's the two biggest Nintendo releases of the year to date: Pokemon X (now with live trolling of Kentuckians!) and Wind Waker HD. Austen wraps with PSN's recent downloadable thriller Rain, proves that playing Lost Planet 3 is going beyond the impossible, and finishes with yet another dose of Ellen Page in Beyond: Two Souls. Now Posted got intentionally shortened to allow maximum time for Whatcha Watch'n. Stephen gets a little theatrical with Potted Potter and puts MasterChef through several dryer cycles to shrink it down to MasterChef Junior before talking Donald off the ledge over Revolutionary Girl Utena. Austen gives a quick update on Beware the Batman and goes a few episodes into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, but buckle up for extended, spoilery discussions of Transformers Prime now that the show has wrapped with the release of Transformers Prime Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising. For the Feature this time around, we're well aware that there's less than a month until the PS3 and 360 get taken out back and Old Yellered. As such, we look back at our memories of HD goodness and give you some recommendations for games you might have missed - as well as the warts. The Mushrooms bring us in for a landing with musings on a state's bad luck, the usual tribute of a common punching bag, and someone mentioning Beautiful Unique Sparkleponies (not Stephen). Did we miss a game in the HD discussion? Want to help Donald through therapy? Let us know in the comments below or send us an email! Including the best possible treatment of KIRBY'S EPIC YARNNot even Reggie's body is ready for the amount of game discussion on this week's show. New Business opens with Stephen's extended, indepth impressions of the biggest game to come out the week of September 17... The Wonderful 101. Austen loves him some Puppeteer and Killzone Mercenary, but if you're looking for crime from him, how about a little GATV available in Saints Row 4? Donald brings the representation from the handheld side with the indie Vita (and PS3, but we don't talk about that) RPG Dragon Fantasy Book II and wraps back around to an early 3DS contender for Game of the Year, Fire Emblem Awakening. In Whatcha Watchin, the updates continue as Stephen finishes off MasterChef, and Austen delivers on a promise from last episode with The Legend of Korra while checking on a recent Ghibli import, From Up On Poppy Hill. Donald goes to the extremes of anime with the mysterious Paranoia Agent and the... how does one describe Gurren Lagann? The Feature discussion is a series of topics featuring one theme: Chaos in the land of the rising sun. Subjects touched on include the passing of Hiroshi Yamauchi, the Sony announcements including Vita TV and Vita2000, Sega x Atlus and, uh, Tetris and Puyo Puyo being a good combo? The Mushrooms bring it home with our general love/hate relationship with SquareEnix and social interaction in general - and stay tuned after the outro for quick Steam Controller impressions.Until next time... UNITE UP!!This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault. All music and clips used under fair use and for discussion purposes only. Female vocals provided by Jessica (Stephen's wife).
STILL not as delayed as Rayman Legends was! There are three metaphysical certainties in gaming: Nintendo is doomed, a certain open-world game will get 10s undeservedly and... NFR will eventually release. This time around in New Business, Stephen doubles back to current AGOTY (Austen Game of the Year) Tomb Raider, and may not be as generous in his ranking of the game at the end of the year. Austen tries his hand at solo co-op in Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons before turning his attention to a couple of under-the-radar platformers, Castle of Illusion HD (PS3 version) and Rayman Legends (Vita). Donald can indeed dig it sucka, as he proves with the 3DS's newest indie megahit SteamWorld Dig, but saves his effusive praise for a somewhat larger purchase... and apparently triggered Sony to go completely insane the night after the recording. (We'll talk about those announcements on the next show. Also, you're welcome.) Now Posted has updates on the unnecessary search for forum replacements, followed by the shortest Whatcha Watchin' in quite a while. Stephen revisits the dead-before-its-time Alphas, Donald continues the theme of underground hits with Gurren Lagann, and Austen sticks around for the final act of Inuyasha. Yeah, that's it. Since Nintendo decided to announce a bunch of stuff right after 22 recorded, we had to cover it - and unlike other outlets, we don't bury the lede. The Feature discussion covers the WiiU price drop in somewhat heavy detail, with a side of 2DS and some PS4/Xbone chasers. Finally, the Mushrooms have the very rare Double Mushroom, the trouble with Kickstarters and A NEW CAR~! Have any mail for us, hate or otherwise? Send it to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com - and until next time, BUY RETRO/GRADE. We need to cure some depression. This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. We're playing Nintendo games and 4chan hates us, woo-hoo! Round out your Labor Day long weekend with the results of our own labor, as Nintendo Free Radio 22 is on the air! New Business opens with largely Stephen-ran but group-aided impressions of Pikmin 3, as you find out who is too stupid and/or lazy to use Wii controls (hint: today's loser is editing it). Donald dipped his toes into the Wonderful 101 demo, but saved most of his love for WayForward's love letter to our collective childhoods, Ducktales Remastered, Austen is glad that a demo actually made him buy Mario and Luigi Dream Team, but finds The Bureau: XCOM Declassified perhaps a little too nutty for its own good. Mind the mess in Now Posted as we kiss a longtime piece of flamebait goodbye, then settle down for another highly animated Whatcha Watchin'. And we mean highly animated: Stephen has Wild Kratts and enough Funimation anime to choke a horse - Ouran High School Host Club, Fairy Tail, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Baka and Test and Soul Eater. Not to be undone, Austen brings his own wacky brand of anime with the incredibly psychotic Penguindrum and gets ultra-violent with Black Lagoon, while Donald attempts to ground things in reality with Wargames: WCW's Most Dangerous Matches (you call THAT reality? - Ed) and Breaking Bad. Yes, Breaking Bad. Certain incidents have caused us to evaluate the nature of the internet and the people who post on it, mostly the racists, misogynists and Anonymous in a Feature with the working title "The Internet Is For Jerks" (note: present company excluded in all examples). Finally, the Mushrooms feature much-needed takedowns of plagiarists, car salesman and the ridiculous demo limits on the eShops. Have any rebuttals for our ways of fixing the conversation on the internet? Have we missed a game that we should talk about? No matter what, send your feedback to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or post it below. This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault. Music and trailers used under Fair Use protection. Already proven wrong about Layton x Wright, what else will be awesome in 2013? Despite the games only coming out AFTER recording, NFR has managed another full round of discussion. This time in New Business, Donald takes an appetizer in Attack of the Friday Monsters before digging into the full meal deal of RPGs in Shin Megami Tensei IV. Austen rolled through Borderlands 2 quickly enough that he took a +1 to DLC with Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep, while Stephen inflicts whiplash on his co-hosts with Cut the Rope on the Leap Motion and a PC-bundled Shark Dash and the incredibly hardcore Anno 2070. After a fabulous Now Posted segment, Whatcha Watchin' starts with a round of everything made up and irrelevant points as Donald celebrates the return of Whose Line Is It Anyway?. Austen brings some sci-fi goodness with a full recap of Warehouse 13 before a rash of superheroism with Justice League's "Flashpoint Paradox". Stephen keeps the superheroing alive with Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Superman Apocalypse and Planet Hulk, with a side of prison comedy with Netflix's original Orange Is The New Black and sci-fi (Generator Rex). We asked - repeatedly - and you came through with a Feature Discussion centered around a preview of the fall, including our Games We're Most Excited For - and some of the answers are already outdated, while others will probably stun you. The Mushrooms put a bow on things with appreciation of well-used system features and... fruit, but also contains a fierce rebuke of recent gaming news. This podcast was edited by Donald Theriault, Austen Parkin and Stephen Shook. All music is used under Fair Use provisions. For the love of Goddish, don't sue us.
Aslyums, Borderlands, Sharknadoes and Other Disasters As far as podcasts go, this is a short one - but one packed full of juicy content. New Business is inaugurated by Donald's jumping headlong into the Open World insanity of Saints Row The Third, a land where Havok physics are abused beyond recognition. Scared witless by this, he then retreats to the relative safety of 2013's most massive crossover, Project Cross (or X) Zone, a game that doesn't attempt to live up to Fire Emblem but will inevitably draw comparisons. Austen is buried under piles of editing and guns in Gearbox's Borderlands 2, a game that is almost worth getting sued over. Stephen wraps the segment with the g-d Batman in Batman: Arkham Aslyum before closing with some harsh words for former Retroactive winner Metroid II: Return of Samus. After an actually informative Now Posted segment, Whatcha Watchin' is even more massive than before. Donald has former and current reality shows in WWE NXT and MasterChef, before bringing us the movie event of 2013... Sharknado. Austen has some caped crusader action of his own with the Beware the Batman premier, as well as one hell of an action packed double feature with White House Down and Guillermo del Toro's love letter to mecha anime, Pacific Rim. Stephen gets a little animated near the end as he and Austen tear into Despicable Me 2. In the Feature Discussion, the Lightning Round boomerangs its way back into the conversation, with topics hitting all three console manufacturers and PC as well as general gaming trends. Subjects such as incompetent PR, zombies, and the effect of Playstation Plus beyond giving people lots of free games are put under the five-minute microscope. A melancholy set of Mushrooms brings the show to a close with reflections on the passing of Ryan Davis, as well as tanking in sports and bad computers. Next show will mark one year since we started Nintendo Free Radio, and we couldn't do it without the knowledge that you're listening - so drop us an email, will ya? The address is nintendofreeradio@gmail.com, and here's something to chew on - what's your most anticipated game coming out before the end of the year and why? Whether it's our longest show since the first one or actual Listener Mail, the apocalypse is nigh Radio Free Nintendo might've taken the weekend off, but that just means you can listen to NFR if your ears stopped ringing from the fireworks (North America only). First off is New Business, and make no bones about it - this one is Xbone-sized. We've got: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, The Last of Us, Remember Me, Metroid Other M, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, Thomas Was Alone, Runner 2, New Super Luigi U and KERSPLOOSH! It's so many games we had to forego the puns to keep the show post under a page! After Now Posted makes you question your own sanity, Whatcha Watchin goes even farther down the rabbit hole with Stephen's menagerie of Continuum, Scooby Doo Mystery Inc., the Penny Arcade Strip Search (not what you're thinking)… and Equestria Girls (it might be what your thinking). Donald, a known fan of monsters, steps up to Monster and ponders its Del Toro-fueled fate, while Austen beams into Star Trek Into (or is it into? Wikipedia's not clear) Darkness and a whole mess of animated BluRays. In a very special Double Feature, the crew is forced to confront what brought them together while pondering the listener question of "Why do you play Nintendo games"? After that, E3 is tackled one more time a few weeks out, as they look back at the Xbone's 180 and wonder if gamers have an advocate anymore. A fresh crop of Mushrooms ends the marathon with more Bethesda trouble (Donald's article is here: http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/06/05/what-went-wrong-with-human-heads-prey-2?abthid=51af79d92aabedda5500000c), Stephen's musical talent, and an ice cold NBA Draft. Steps will be taken to ensure shorter shows - but if you'd like to combat those plans, why not drop us an email? Send it to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com - and until next time, watch out for that mutagen! This podcast was edited by Austen Parkin, Donald Theriault and Stephen Shook. Is there any hope left for the gaming industry? Only the #PS4NoDRM knows When we last left our intrepid heroes, Donald was ready to ragequit the entire industry... could Nintendo or Sony save the day? After a recap of post-E3 Microsoft hilarity (most of which is now invalid thanks to 8:1 preorder ratios and the United States armed forces), the crew dives into the Sony press event. Needless to say, one five minute period saved everything, but did another five minute period cost Sony some PS4 controller sales? And how many press conferences contain Tesla coil shotguns AND Octodad? Before moving onto Nintendo, you'll hear from Nintendo World Report community manager JP Corboran on his E3 thoughts. Much money will be spent, and many copies of FIFA will be purchased. Also, if you don't like Mario 3D World, you're a communist and a fascist. Finally, it comes to Nintendo, in a segment plagued with as many technical issues as the Nintendo Direct itself was. Megatons are discussed, tears are shed over Retro's choice to take another run at Donkey Kong instead of lowering themselves to Metroid (That's enough - Ed) and everyone loses their mind over X, except Stephen who, you can probably tell, was crazy by this section anyway. Nintendo couldn't win E3, but did they at least try for the silver? The team will reconvene in a few days to get over their own E3 hangovers, and are looking forward to your comments - send them by email to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or leave them here. Until next time, #DealWithIt. This episode was edited by Austen Parken, Stephen Shook and Donald Theriault. All music contained in this episode is used in accordance with fair use provisions.
It's E3 hype time! But first, games! Get in, sit down, and hold on - it's an extra-large even by our standards edition of Nintendo Free Radio, and we're joined by special guest/banhammer wielder JP Corboran! JP throws out the first pitch in New Business with the only good baseball series since Ken Griffey went to Cincy, MLB The Show 13 in varieties both standard and Vita. He then hops over to the WiiU with the eShop exclusive Kung Fu Rabbit, and you carrot believe what the panel thinks about bringing an iOS game to the WiiU. JP closes out with a game that's been a bone of contention for us in the past, Metroid Prime - only this time, the opinions might actually be positive! Nevertheless, Stephen then kicks it old school with the original explorative platformer, Super Metroid. Run, don't crawl to check out this review. Austen threatened/promised something at the end of 17, but first he talks about the other, other Bionic Commando game on PS3 (the 2009, retail, insert-nasty-spoiler-here version) and since it's Austen we have the whole Vita playing Population, we have to talk a AAA Vita game in the form of Soul Sacrifice. But of course, you came for his thoughts on Swery's wacky, barely playable drama Deadly Premonition, in which a noted reviewer and commentator is recommended for drug testing. Finally, it's (reference deleted due to Nintendo copyright) as Donald has the newest game of the bunch, Donkey Kong Country Returns (IN 3-D!) Is he going ape, or are the controls still funky like a monkey? As usual, Now Posted brings its own brand of insanity before we dive into the realm of Whatcha Watchin'. JP learns the joys of people who have never been in Donald's kitchen during a marathon of Cheers, while Stephen brings the odd assortment of Cold Diggers, Doctor Who (sadly, Hugh Laurie will *not* be the 12th Doctor), Ben 10 and Tron Uprising. Austen has a follow-up on Tiger & Bunny, as well as a series from the Steins;Gate producers with just as many grammatical (and otherwise) atrocities - Chaos;HEAd. No, that is not a typo (back off, Clippy). You might notice that Donald's not in the last paragraph, largely for editing-related reasons, but that's also because the only thing he watched was the Xbox One (hereafter referred to as the Xbone) reveal, which provides a handy springboard to the Feature and we look ahead to E3. What will the fate of the Xbone and PS4 be, and what can Nintendo do to stem the tide? Plus, special advice from JP, who had the advantage of actually attending the show and providing some tips for those of you attempting to sneak into the LACC this year. Finally, the Mushrooms hate on the future of humanity, meeting software and spam filters before JP provides news to pull us all from the Darkest Timeline. We hope to have a show up for the end of E3 week looking at the press conferences and a regular show shortly after. Until next time, say hi to NORM~ for us. The people responsible for screwing up JP Corboran's audio have been sacked. Please understand.
We Hope to Make You Understand the Value of Those Sharks. Please Understand. Once again, it's 80s Night here at Nintendo Free Radio (settle in, folks...we're old. We're contractually obligated to do this every once in a while), and we're back to bring you the latest outdated gaming coverage in the industry. Donald kicks off New Business with Atlus' latest foray into Digital Devil madness with Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, a 3DS port of an obscure Sega Saturn game...AND IT'S OUT RIGHT NOW! After conquering Mario's latest 3D Land, the group briefly discusses their impressions of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. (Let us pause for a moment of silence in honor of the Twinkies analogy Hostess' demise now denies us.) Afterwards, reinforcements have arrived, as Stephen fires up the Ion Canon and spins-up an old 1st person shooter classic (?): Command & Conquer: Renegade. Meanwhile, Austen readies his laser bow and 20-sided die for a neon-lit journey through Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Does it have The Touch, or would you Dare to Be Stupid for playing it? Finally, Austen asks "What DO you do with a Druken Whaler?" with his Dishonored replay (+ Knife of Dunwall DLC), with perhaps a Kameo from his Xbox 360 as well. After the latest sojourn into the 7th & 8th Circles of the NWR Forums with Now Posted, Whatcha Watchin' returns with a look at Donald's financial problems in Trading Places. Afterwards, Stephen decides to also kick-it old school with Naked Gun 33 1/3, as well as a round of the best game show Austen's never heard of: Let's Ask America. Finally, Austen closes the feature out with a look at Siffy's (SyFy to those of you who don't care about spelling) new Science Fiction drama Defiance. After beholding the horror that is Teen Titans Go, we then initiate the Ghost Protocol (Mission Impossible 4). Once again, the Feature Discussion doesn't have a full subject, but the Lightning Round seemed to get a charge out of you last time, so we figured we'd Electrify your Boogaloo. Topics for discussion include the Fate of E3, the Fall of LucasArts, our New Japanese Overlord, and hilariously inaccurate (in retrospect) predictions for the Microsoft Xbox One Unveiling 2 weeks ago. As always, the show wraps-up with The Mushrooms, featuring Canada's Public Enemy #1; Multiplayer Woes; and A Crack in the Tradition of Terrible Video Game Movies. We'd love to hear some feedback (even if you apparently don't), so don't be afraid to send us an email at nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or leave a comment on the Talkback! Welcome to episode 87 of Connectivity, or as we are calling it, "Episode One." Hope there is no confusion with the actual episode one from two years ago, but this is the true "Episode One." Because it's the only "One" you'll need! That is, until it is obsolete and we move on to the next iteration. Then it is "One" for the dump or the back of your closet somewhere. If you hadn't guessed, our main segment this week deals with the announcement of the Xbox One as well as last week's Nintendo Direct. Scott, Neal, and special guest Donald Theriault (from Nintendo Free Radio!) break down both events and look ahead to E3 and more dog gifs. After that, we have two bonus segments for you. First up is the return of The Dr. Jonathan Metts' Crazy Fun Time Space Show! This week, in lieu of answering questions from you fine listeners, Dr. Metts has me take a quiz about rockets he wrote years ago for a sophomore college class he was teaching. If you'd like to play along at home and see just how much YOU know about rockets, the quiz can be found here: https://docs.google.com/a/nintendoworldreport.com/document/d/1zgiQeTPpWFNq0u5xqRSNih9y9U2uEchEcSlOl3t0Fi4/pub Bonus segment number two is all about the season finale of Doctor Who. Patrick, Scott, Nicholas, and Amanda return to discuss the wacky Doctor's latest exploits and postulate about what the final few minutes mean for the future of Who. SPOILER WARNING!!! Also, be sure to check out Amanda's portfolio for plenty of excellent Doctor Who inspired art (http://supinternets.com) AND check out Nicholas' excellent Doctor Who shorts he recorded with some friends (http://youtu.be/xAyw4g0X98s). He's the best Doctor of them all. That's it for this week! Send us your listener mail to Connectivity@nintendoworldreport.com. What did you think about the Xbox One announcement? What it does it mean for the future of the Wii U? Tell us what you think! See you next week for Episode 88, or "Episode 2"!
After last week's 3DS blowout and news-a-palooza, this week's episode is a little svelte. Kicking things off, Scott, Mike and Patrick discuss the Rayman Legends Challenges App. The free download is meant to appease fans over the inexplicable delay of Rayman Legends. Does it do that job? Yeah, it kind of does! After that, Scott, Zach and Neal dive deep into Injustice: Gods Among Us, the DC fighter from the people who brought you Mortal Kombat. The trio has much to say about the impressive array of game modes, the simple and intuitive combat, and more! Long story short, if you are a fighting game fan or a DC fan, Injustice is for you. After the outro, stick around for a bonus segment all about the ongoing NHL playoffs with Scott, JP, and special guest Donald Theriault (who you may know as Shaymin). The crew breaks down each match-up, makes some tame predictions, and generally hates on the Canucks. As always, you can send your listener mail to connectivity@nintendoworldreport.com; which you should totally do. Until next week!
