Politically-motivated euphemism for French fries in the United States

Blake Lively says that the slander campaign against her hurt sales of her hair and beverage products. Which, it might have done. Or, people just weren't interested in her hair and beverage products. It's a bit silly, but, so is life. —Because they're kind people, Canada has sent firefighting planes to the U.S. to help scoop and dump water on the flames. So, naturally, one of them is currently out of commission, because it hit a civilian drone doing lookie-loo nonsense. In the chat, a commenter who worked on these planes gives insight into what happened. —Well, the accidental death Rust lawsuit has ended, and Alec Baldwin is in the clear. Which means he wants to move on with his life, right? Nope! He's going after the prosecutors, for prosecuting him. It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for him. —Trump wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America. Which is hilarious. Good for him. The Panama Canal, Greenland, this… The best part of it is: feckless Republicans go along with every one of his dumb ideas, because he's a toddler throwing a tantrum, and they're cowards. Following the fall out of 9/11, America turned its guns toward Afghanistan and Iraq. France, a long time ally, did not sanction or support the US's interest in fighting Iraq and Saddam Hussein. In an effort of Bush era lunacy, Americans started renaming French Fries in “Freedom Fries.” In an act of Patriotic fervor, the … Continue reading "Episode 110: Freedom Fries"

Hello Interactors,This episode kicks off the summer season on the environment and our interactions with it and through it. I’m starting with food. Food is a big topic that impacts us all, albeit in uneven ways. It got me wondering about the global food system and how it’s controlled. Who are the winners and who are the losers? And why is there competition for nourishment in first place? As interactors, you’re special individuals self-selected to be a part of an evolutionary journey. You’re also members of an attentive community so I welcome your participation. Please leave your comments below or email me directly. Now let’s go… Srochno vernite Big Mak. Moy trebuyem etogo pryamo seychas. Pryamo seychas. Pryamo zdes'. Big Mak!)“Bring back the Big Mac! Bring back the Big Mac. We demand it right now. Right now. Right here. Big Mac!” Holding a handwritten sign that read “Bring back the Big Mac” a protestor in Moscow took advantage of a press conference a couple weeks ago at the reopening of McDonalds under a new name. Albeit a bit tongue in cheek, he was demanding the return of one popular product not on the menu. The Big Mac name and special sauce are both copyright protected. But the new owner of the new McDonald’s, Alexander Govor – who was a Siberian McDonald’s franchise owner before buying the entire Russian chain – promised he’d find a suitable replacement for the Big Mac. As for a new name, I vote for Большая говядина (Bol'shaya Govyadina), Big Beef. Or given the new owners last name how about just Bol’shaya Gov – Big Gov.Govor claims he paid below market price for the world’s most recognized fast-food chain and he’s already slashed prices. McDonald’s priced the double cheeseburger at 160 rubles ($2.95) but it’s now 129 rubles ($2.38). The fish burger was 190 rubles ($3.50) and is now 169 rubles ($3.11). The composition of the burgers stays the same as does the equipment, but they did add pancakes, omelets, and scrambled eggs to the morning menu. However, the golden arches are gone, and the name has changed to Vkusno & tochka's (Delicious and that’s it or Delicious, full stop). After 32 years, that’s it for McDonald’s in Russia but it’s promised to remain delicious. Back in 1990 the American based company had to import all the ingredients to fulfill the promise of a true McDonald’s. It made for an expensive introduction of the American icon. French fries were a problem. The Russian potatoes were too small, so McDonalds had to import seeds to grow larger russet potatoes locally. Apples for the McDonald’s ‘apple pie’ had to come from Bulgaria. After three decades McDonald’s managed to source just about everything locally and ultimately employed 62,000 Russians throughout their operations. But those McDonald’s branded red, yellow, and blue uniforms have been replaced with just red ones. Judging from the lines and enthusiasm at the grand opening, I suspect the new MickeyD’s will continue to be popular…and delicious, full stop.McDonald’s was popular in Russia from the day it opened in 1990. The Berlin wall had come down, perestroika was nearing its peak, glasnost embraced a blend of socialism and traditional liberal economics that allowed more U.S. companies to enter the former Soviet Union. It was the age of exceedingly fast globalization. A year after McDonald’s showed up Microsoft offered a Russian version of DOS. Just as I was starting at Microsoft in 1992, localized versions of software were flying on floppy disks around the world. By 1996 localized versions of Windows and Office 95 were on a computer on every desk a new McDonald’s was being built every three days. 1996 was the first year McDonald’s made more revenue from outside the United States than within. And McDonald’s wasn’t just pushing their McMunchies on unsuspecting countries. Many were clamoring for their own MickyD’s. James Cantalupo, president of McDonald's International at time, said, “'I feel these countries want McDonald's as a symbol of something -- an economic maturity and that they are open to foreign investments. I don't think there is a country out there we haven't gotten inquiries from. I have a parade of ambassadors and trade representatives in here regularly to tell us about their country and why McDonald's would be good for the country.'”There were some who believed the proliferation of McDonald’s symbolized the spread of freedom and democracy. Thomas Friedman of the New York Times offered in 1996 a “Golden Arches Theory of Conflict Prevention -- which stipulates that when a country reaches a certain level of economic development, when it has a middle class big enough to support a McDonald's, it becomes a McDonald's country, and people in McDonald's countries don't like to fight wars; they like to wait in line for burgers.” There goes that theory. Though, Russians are still waiting in line for a burger…just not from McDonald’s.I’m reminded of the “freedom fries” scandal from 2003. That’s when the Republican senator from Ohio, Bob Ney, changed the name of ‘French Fries’ to ‘Freedom Fries’ in three Congressional cafeterias. It was in response to French opposition to the American invasion of Iraq. The name was changed back in 2006 after Ney was forced to retire. He was implicated in a scandal involving a group of lobbyists that swindled $85,000,000 from Native American tribes. Ney was bribed by one of the guilty lobbyists. On the satirical Saturday Night Live news show Weekend Update, Tina Fey quipped, “‘In a related story, in France, American cheese is now referred to as 'idiot cheese.'"SEEDS OF GREEDOf course, McDonald’s wasn’t the only multinational food company spreading fast food around the world. I, for one, was grateful to come across a Burger King on the Champs-Élysées in Paris back in 1984. It was my first trip to Europe and my 18-year-old palette wasn’t quite tuned to fine French cuisine. Truth be told, my 56-year-old palette isn’t either. I find French food to be highly overrated. I remember my 18-year-old self thinking that “Le Whopper” and Pepsi with ice, amidst pumping French disco, was both surreal and comforting.Pizza Hut, Domino’s, and Taco Bell are found in all corners of the world today. Except Mexico. Despite many gallant attempts, Taco Bell can’t seem to crack the Mexican market. I suspect Mexicans find their interpretation of the taco insulting…and gross. But it’s not just fast food. Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, General Mills, Kellog’s, Kraft, and Mars are all American companies that make a plethora of processed and packaged products marketed as food. There are other multinational companies outside of the U.S. doing the same. Mexico’s Grupo Bimbo is where Thomas English muffins, Orowheat, and Sara Lee treats come from. They also own Colonial bread: a white bread that originated in colonized America by a Scandinavian immigrant and is now run out of colonized Mexico by the grandson of a Spanish immigrant who could pass as just another white billionaire CEO.And who hasn’t heard of Switzerland’s Nestlé products? They are so big there’s a wiki page just to list their products. Chips Ahoy cookie anyone? What about the Anglo-Dutch company Unilever? They bring us Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, Dove Bars, and Hellman’s mayonnaise. Have you ever had Nutella? That comes from the Italian company Ferrero. That single company consumes one quarter of the world’s supply of hazelnuts. Increasingly those nuts are coming from my neighboring state, Oregon. I love Oregon hazelnuts, so save some for me Ferrero. This select group of companies produce, market, and sell most of the food around the world that is baked, canned, chilled, frozen, dried, and processed. Adding to the fat and sugar found in fast-food chains, they make dairy products, ice cream, meal replacements, bars, snacks, noodles, pasta, sauces, oils, fats, TV dinners, dressings, condiments, spreads, and an array of beverages. This gives them massive market leverage over the source ingredients produced by farmers around the world. The very seeds needed to grow these crops are also controlled by a select group of multinational companies. The food policy advocacy group Food and Power reported: “In 2020, the top four corporations, Bayer (formerly Monsanto), Corteva (formerly DuPont), Syngenta (part of ChemChina), and Limagrain together controlled 50% of the global seed market, with Bayer and Corteva alone claiming roughly 40%. And when it comes to genetic traits, this control is even more pronounced: Bayer controls 98% of trait markers for herbicide-resistant soybeans, and 79% of trait markers for herbicide-resistant corn.” Carlos J. Maya-Ambía, a professor of Political Economy and Agriculture at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico, uses an hourglass as a metaphor to explain the control these companies have over the food making process. Imagine the top of the hourglass are the world’s farmers producing edible plants and animals and the bottom are the world’s human inhabitants – consumers. Both are wide and round. The middle of the hourglass is relatively narrow. These are the few multinational companies mentioned above who control most of the flow from the top of the hourglass (the farms) to the bottom (our tables).Because these seeds are engineered for largescale monoculture farm productions that these corporations require. They tend to rely on agrochemicals to achieve desired yields. It’s a short-term positive yield strategy optimized for quarterly earnings reports, but with severe long-term negative consequences. And guess who controls an estimated 75 percent of the global pesticide market? Those same top tier seed companies. These chemicals are largely petrochemicals, so the fossil fuel industry also profits from global food production and consumption. These processes, genetically modified seeds, and chemicals no doubt have helped bring countless people out of poverty and starvation. Especially where increasingly harsh conditions make it hard to grow crops. But at what cost? These industrial scale schemes not only leach nutrients from the soil and pollute water supplies, but exposure to these chemicals can also cause neurological disorders, birth defects, infertility, stillbirths, miscarriages, and multiple forms of cancer.Worse yet are the inequities. Many of these chemicals and genetically modified foods are banned in developed countries. Before Monsanto was purchased by Bayer, massive protests across Europe led to the company pulling out of parts of the EU. Those countries with the most organized farmer and consumer protests had the biggest effect. It’s testimony to the power of democracy and organized protest. But Monsanto, and companies like them, just move on to more willing governments or vulnerable people and places. They seek lands far away from the peering eyes of consumers with a conscience. Many of whom who sit there munching snacks, and tapping on their phones to make that next online fast-food delivery. Guilty as charged. Sad as it may be, when the exploitive interdependent global food system is out of sight, it’s also out of mind.As Maya-Ambia puts it, “the scenario becomes clearer if we consider agriculture as a global system and as a long global value chain, composed of several links where agents interact and connect with the whole economy, nationally and globally. Accordingly, the global economy is formed by a complex web of value chains, whose links are located in different places around the world. Therefore, it is correct to speak of…the global value chain of agriculture that does not begin at the production process, but rather with the appropriation of nature and the transformation of natural objects into economic inputs, including the current land-grabbing in several places by transnational corporations. Driven by profit, these corporations have appropriated land, resulting in disastrous ecological effects.”He continues, “These practices of appropriation and consumption have created a ‘new international division of labor’: the Global South has become the place of appropriation of nature and in some ways a type of dumping ground.”FAIR TRADE LAY BAREMany of the same places these powerful corporations exploit are also the first to be hit with food insecurity. The United Nations Food and Agricultural Association (FAO) reported last year that “the number of undernourished people in the world continued to rise in 2020. Between 720 and 811 million people in the world faced hunger in 2020.” This includes 480 million people in Asia, 46 million in Africa, and 14 million in Latin America. Food insecurity has been climbing steadily over the last six years. One in three of the world’s 2.37 billion people do not have adequate access to food. This isn’t a supply issue. The world has enough food to feed everyone. This is about fair access. Many of the same people responsible for producing food exported to more developed countries are the one’s who reap the smallest rewards from the value chain. The smallest share of value goes to those farmers in developing countries. And the smaller the farm, the worse the effect. This fact is revealed by observing stagnating long-run trends of producer prices compared to rising consumer prices. These prices are controlled through governance schemes that squeeze the middle of the hourglass. Firms can exert extreme market power, leverage advanced financial and technological mechanisms, influence local, regional, and state leadership, and assert a particular cultural influence. My Parisian “Le Whopper” influenced the culture of the Champs-Élysées. American fast-food culture in Russia lives on in the new ‘Delicious’ McDonald’s. Full stop.Inequities are also found in the devastating effects of industrialized agriculture at the hands of these powerful firms. Large swaths of sensitive and diverse habitat in developing countries are violently destroyed – like in the Amazon. They’re making space for more croplands and pastures to grow more food and animals, to make more food products, that are sold to increasingly affluent populations who are rising out of poverty in search of the famed Western consumer lifestyle. This only further destroys the land and water making living conditions in these already poor areas even more stressed. As criminal as it is to live poor in a developed country like the United States, it’s not nearly as worse as living poor in unfairly exploited countries. Especially when it comes to acute food insecurity. On the other hand, living in developed countries – or desiring to adopt a similar lifestyle – comes with a higher risk of death by obesity…in large part due to fast and junk food. In 2021 the World Health Organization reported that worldwide obesity has tripled since 1975. More people in the world are likely to die of obesity than malnutrition. And because the globalization of high calorie junk and fast-food production exists to drive prices as low as possible, it makes it more accessible to poor people in both developing and developed countries. This puts poorer people at higher risk of both malnutrition and obesity.Naturally occurring factors, like the pandemic and a changing climate also unfairly impact those most vulnerable. As does war. How naïve to believe countries with a McDonald’s would never take arms against one another; that French fries, freedom fries, would somehow united the world. Russia and Ukraine have proven otherwise. Conflicts in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America have resulted in millions of people fleeing for safety and starving in the process. Many of whom were farmers. Much of the food needed to feed these refugees historically came from Ukraine and Russia but that is all at risk now.But American farmers might be able to help. In a rare bipartisan partnership on Capital Hill, just this week President Biden signed into law the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022 (OSRA). U.S. agricultural shippers complained to the federal government that the world’s top ocean carriers unfairly denied them container space. Shippers on the West coast found it more profitable to return empty boxes to Asia so they could be re-loaded for the next round of more profitable exports back to the U.S. Of course, this is all fed by increasing consumer demand by overconsuming Americans. But these interruptions made it difficult for farmers and shippers to predict when their time sensitive goods should be delivered to ports before they spoiled. But with the passing of this law, ocean shippers are required to report to the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) how many exports they’re loading and from where. The bill also includes rules that determines what makes a denial to export agricultural goods unreasonable. Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Co., and Transfar Shipping have already offered container space for U.S. agricultural shippers and others are soon to follow. Hopefully, food grown in America can stand a better chance of making it to those in most need in Asia, Africa, Latin America and beyond. The world seems to be swimming in so many crises that the word has somehow lost urgency. But between war, climate change, and economic inequalities the global food system needs transformation. Here are six ways the FAO believes the global food system could be made more healthy, sustainable, and inclusive:Integrating humanitarian, development and peacebuilding policies in conflict-affected areas.Scaling up climate resilience across food systems.Strengthening resilience of the most vulnerable to economic adversity.Intervening along the food supply chains to lower the cost of nutritious foods.Tackling poverty and structural inequalities, ensuring interventions are pro-poor and inclusive.Strengthening food environments and changing consumer behaviour to promote dietary patterns with positive impacts on human health and the environment. These steps read a lot like the steps McDonald’s took 32 years ago after entering the Russian market. The introduction of fast-food chains was believed to be a peacebuilding exercise in a conflict-affected area. Freedom fries brought hope and russet potatoes to Russia. McDonald’s scaled up a resilient food system by investing in local farming. They optimized food supply chains within the region. Impoverished Russian’s adjusting to a post communist reality were given jobs growing McDonald’s produce, delivering goods, and working in restaurants. They strengthened the local food environment and changed consumer behavior. And while McDonald’s may not be the healthiest food, not the healthiest habit, it may have been better than what was offered before and it certainly made people happy.“Delicious and That’s It” just might make it even better. It could be their menu alterations make it a healthier version of McDonald’s. They’ve already made it cheaper. But judging from the Hugo Boss shirt one customer was wearing at the grand opening in Moscow, I have a hunch the new MickeyD’s just might be an elite treat. Still, they may be on to something. Perhaps this is a model that could be used in other places. Maybe more globetrotting fast-food restaurants and junk food producers should be selling out to the locals. Pizza Hut in Japan already offers squid as a pizza topping, but maybe a Japanese owned franchise would result in even more localized interpretations of a food that originated in Italy. After all, flatbreads exist in a variety of forms all over the world. Imagine مناقيش بيتزا (Manakish pizza), pisa bing 披薩餅 (Bing pizza), or a Catalonia coca? They could all be made with local ingredients, sourced from smaller sustainable farms, sold in locally owned franchises, employing local residents with wages high enough to live on. Who knows where the next Big Mac could be invented? Maybe Russia. Bol’shaya Gov anyone? This is a public episode. ACTS OF THE APOSTLES 2:1-11WHEN THE DAY of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontos and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God." It feels like just a few years ago, but I think we're heading on two decades. It just a couples years before Thomas came home. Beth and I spent a week touring Paris with Beth's sister Becky. I have to say Paris was amazing and that I'd go back in a heartbeat, but one of the most interesting parts of our trip - something that was a bit unique - was the timing. You see, it was 2003 and we landed in Paris on the same day that President George W. Bush launched the US's invasion of Iraq. It was the beginning of our nation's military response to 9/11, which you could say finally ended just last year with our withdrawal from Afghanistan. The US launched that invasion with support from an international coalition that included the United Kingdom, Poland, and Australia, but we weren't in England, Poland, or Australia. We were in France. And France had taken a stand against our invasion.I remember seeing posters at bus stops with French headlines reading “Guerre Bush” or Bush's War. I have photographs of the protestors outside the US Embassy and French police lining up in riot gear including bulletproof shields shields and batons, all standing at the ready, waiting to keep the peace by force if necessary. I don't remember any personal trouble related to our presence as American tourists in Paris, but I do remember one time, as I was browsing a little gift shop, the owner of that shop had the radio playing. It was a talk show, and I couldn't understand a thing, of course, because the announcer and his guest were speaking French, but then in the middle of his monologue, I heard two English words and I had to laugh because I knew exactly what they were talking about. Those words were: “Freedom Fries.”You see, in reaction to the French pushback to our invasion, some Americans had decided to shun anything French. And that included the most popular fast food side dish in America, French Fries. And so a small number of restaurants and the Congressional Cafeteria renamed French Fries as Freedom Fries. Forget the fact that French Fries were invented in America, that “French” in the name is a reference to a style of cutting, not the country. But who ever really started saying “Freedom Fries.” It was 100% a stunt. And a laughable one, at that. But 2003 was notthe first time Americans had decided to change the names of their foods to reflect their negative feelings about other ethnicities. Have you ever heard of “Liberty Cabbage” or “Liberty Sandwiches?” Well, in 1918, as America fought Germany in World War I, anti-German sentiment here at home led to the renaming of sauerkraut as “Liberty Cabbage” and hamburgers as “Liberty Sandwiches.” Those names didn't stick, either. But unfortunately, this anti-German sentiment during World War I went even deeper than it's 2003 equivalent, leading to the banning of German classes in schools and the speaking of German in public. It even led to prohibiting German preaching in German-speaking churches.Right here in Iowa, our Governor at the time, passed the “Babel Proclamation,” an executive order forbidding the use of any language other than English in public. This executive order, a gross and obvious infringement of the first amendment, was enforced by local municipalities who would fine violators. Fines were often in the $25 range, which would be the equivalent of about $450 today. Right here in Scott County four women were fined $225 (or $2,250 of today's dollars) by the County Defense Council when they were heard speaking German to one another over their a party line. And if you're too young to know what a party line is, when telephones were first invented they were shared by communities, not just households, and you could listen in on your neighbor. These women were fined for simply speaking to their friends and family in their native tongue. This proclamation was made, accepted, and enforced because people were afraid. In spite of the fact that these very same German immigrants had fled to America in an attempt to escape the oppression of the government that the US now fought, Americans feared what they could not understand. Iowa's Governor Harding argued that his proclamation would "save the lives of American boys overseas by curbing sedition at home." His rhetoric was backed by none other than President Theodore Roosevelt who said in reference to the proclamation in Iowa: “America is a nation—not a polyglot boarding house ... There can be but one loyalty—to the Stars and Stripes; one nationality—the American—and therefore only one language—the English language.”I have to say I love the irony of the name of the “Babel Proclamation,” a reference to the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. Doubtless Governor Harding or his advisors chose this name to give the proclamation an air of Christian authority. But did Governor Harding or his advisors know that they were naming their proclamation after the bad guys in that story? That evil king Nimrod was able to gather all the people together in one place and attempt to build his sacrilegious tower specifically because all the peoples of Earth spoke one language. And did he stop to think that it was God who sent the various languages to make sure that humanity huddle together in this way again, but rather fulfill his commandment to be “fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.” By insisting that all Americans speak only one language, Governor Harding and Teddy Roosevelt were standing on the side of King Nimrod and the Tower of Babel. And they were standing against the will of God.I thought talking about separation caused by languages, fear of what we don't understand, and the Tower of Babel would be a good place to start this morning, because many of our hymns see what happened at Pentecost as an answer to what happened at the Tower of Babel. For example, today's Kontakion reads, “When the High One descended, confusing tongues, He divided the nations. And when He distributed the fiery tongues He called all to one unity.” I think it is important to remember that this miracle didn't sudden make everyone understand Aramaic. It didn't make everyone suddenly start speaking a single language like Hebrew or Latin. The very first miracle performed upon the descent of the Holy Spirit was to see the Church preaching and teaching in a variety of tongues. The passage read from Acts today begins with the disciples—the very same disciples who had fallen asleep in the garden of Gethsemane, who had fled in the face of persecution, who had hidden themselves behind locked doors when their Lord was hung on a cross—all gathered together and praying. Our icons always very stylistically show the twelve disciples or the twelve disciples and Mary, which is kind of how I always pictured it, but John Chrysostum makes the point and I think he is right that we are supposed to understand from the text that this was the entire 120 mentioned a few sentences earlier. So this group included not just the 12, but also Mary the mother of Jesus, Jesus' brothers, and about 100 other disciples, men and women gathered together in prayer. And then suddenly a wind roars through the room, and tongues of fire come to rest upon each of these 120 individuals. As the Holy Spirit rests upon all these men and women in that upper room, we are witnessing the birth of the Church. Ezekiel had described the Glory of the Lord leaving the Temple in Jerusalem, and notice here that the Holy Spirit did not simply move into some central Christian Church. Instead, just as St. Paul would later describe, every person had become the Temple of the Lord. And just as Jesus had promised the woman at the well, the time had come for every person to worship in Spirit and in truth. After the apostles and disciples are filled with the Holy Spirit, only then are they moved to leave their silent prayer and begin proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. We are told that in the streets of Jerusalem that day were many devout people who had journeyed to Jerusalem from all over the world to celebrate Pentecost, the major Judean festival. The author of Acts goes out of his way to describe the very diverse audience: “Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Judeans and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs.” Europe, Asia, and Africa are all represented in this list of visitors. This is a mix of Judean travelers; those who are not Judean, but simply interested in the Judean religion; and those with no Judean ties at all. And in a crowd like that, it would be most likely that all of these visitors would be trying to speak Greek, the most common language in the Greco-Roman world. And it would have probably been acceptable for the Aramaic speaking disciples to attempt to reach out to this crowd and do their best in Greek. But this was not enough for the birthday of the Church. Instead of insisting on Aramaic or Greek or Latin, the disciples miraculously begin to speak to each of these people in this crowd in their own native languages. The first thing the Holy Spirit does on Pentecost is demonstrate the path forward for this new Christian religion destined to reach the ends of the earth, and it is not to enforce some single language like reborn King Nimrod. Instead, the Holy Spirit caused the apostles to speak the various languages of these foreigh visitors. God spoke to these men and women in their own tongues. And yes, in this story, the language is learned with miraculous speed. But when a missionary dedicates his or her life to learning the language of a people they hope to serve, it is no less the miraculous just because it takes longer. It is every bit the work of the Holy Spirit that drives this action. When Sts. Cyril and Methodius worked with the Slavs, or when St. Nicolai Kasatin evangelized the Japanese, or St. Herman ministered to the Aleuts, or St. Patrick to the Irish, or St. Olaf the Norwegians, or St. Sava the Serbs, or St Nina to the Georgians, it was no less the Holy Spirit that led them to learn, work, and write in the language of the people. It was love, patience, kindness, and faithfulness that allowed them to do their work. In fact, it is always a loving act to take the time and effort to understand the many different peoples who live around us. It is fear causes us to mistrust what we can't understand. And perfect love drives out fear. And “different languages” doesn't always have to mean literal linguistics. We all know different generations can have a hard time understanding one another. Or different occupations, whether you are a teacher or a manager or a grandmother or a meteorologist or a nurse or a technician, we each speak different languages in our daily lives. But each of you were called to carry the Spirit of Christ to all of those you work with every day. We come here, like the disciples gathered in the upper room, to pray, to purify our hearts, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, so that we can carry that Spirit out into the world. Each of you was chosen specifically and on purpose to be the hands and feet and mouth of Christ, spreading his love into places that only you can reach with words that only you know.As St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “To the Judeans I became as a Judean, that I might win Judeans; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law, that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people that I might by all means save some.” We must learn to speak the languages – both literal and figurative - of all those around us.The story of Pentecost concludes with Peter, the same Peter who had sunk in the waves when he tried to walk on the water, who had fallen on his face in fear at the Transfiguration, who had denied Jesus three times on the night of His betrayal—preaching his first sermon, witnessing to Jesus Christ's lordship without fear—in the streets of the very same city who had so recently – only 50 days earlier - crucified his Lord. Thousands are converted by his words and a community founded in love grows up in Jerusalem. Acts tells us that this community “continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.”We often come to this passage to explore the beginnings of the Eucharist, the meal that we are here today to participate in today. Or we like to emphasize the notion communal living. It is easy to admire this lifestyle, this sharing of everything in common that still happens to this day in our monastic communities. But today, I'd really just like to emphasize the spirit of unity among these new Christians as they “continued daily with one accord” - with one accord. What a miraculous witness we would be to the world if we could do just this one simple thing. In an ever increasingly polarized society where so many are willing to post on Facebook about how others are “stupid” or “evil” and how “I know better than you,” what a glory it would be if there were just one community where love, patience, and humility were the rule. Where we listen to people who we disagree with. Where we show patience with people who make mistakes. And we are able to show humility, to demonstrate an understanding the limits of our own knowledge. Just like the apostles, I have little doubt that a place that that we would find “favor with all the people.”Love is always the truest sign of the Church. This is why the Eucharist, a shared meal, lives at the heart of our faith. We prove, or at least try to prove, every week that we are one, that we are a family, that we are indeed the Church, by our willingness to come together to share a meal. To be the Church, we must do our best to remember that within the Church there is “neither Judean nor foreigner, slave nor free, male nor female.” Indeed, St. Maximus the Confessor takes this Pauline notion even further, saying: “Men, women, and children, profoundly divided as to race, nation, language, manner of life, work, knowledge, honor, fortune…the Church recreates all of them in the Spirit. To all equally she communicates a divine aspect. All receive from her a unique nature which cannot be broken asunder, a nature which no longer permits one henceforth to take into consideration the many and profound differences which are their lot. In that way all are raised up and united in a manner which is truly universal. In her none is in the least degree separated from the community, all are grounded, so to speak, in one another, by the simple and indivisible power of faith.” This is what the Church is. It is not a place to sing the prettiest songs or display the best icons - though those things certainly can happen here. It is where humanity is called together in order to practice and grow our love. Jesus taught this to his disciples as he washed their feet. He said: “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”I hope this is why you are here today; to love and forgive one another; to live and pray in humility. If we had thousands here with us and we couldn't love, we would be wasting our time. But I tell you that even when there are only a few of us are here, we have the potential to change the world. “Acquire the Spirit of Peace and a thousand souls around you will be saved,” St. Seraphim of Sarov famously taught. If you are able to find peace here and carry that peace out into the world, it will not go unnoticed. People are craving peace – especially right now - and they will seek you out and ask you where you found it. I promise you that.May we be the kind of community where we love one another in spite of our differences, where we make sacrifices for one another in spite our own needs. May the fire of the Holy Spirit burn so brightly among us that it is unmistakable. May we be instantly recognizable to any who walk through our doors as the very icon of the Church founded over 2000 years ago when the Holy Spirit rested upon each of those one hundred and twenty disciples in that upper room.

We have learned nothing from the "freedom fries" movement. Yet again, we're seeing a performative movement to rename or destroy drinks/products/foods etc. to...somehow...support Ukraine's defense against Russian invasion. Learn why that does nothing but make you feel like you've done something (all while doing absolutely nothing). Then, AMC is bumping up prices for their blockbusters. Is it a smart business move or a sneaky way to recoup the money lost since 2020? Finally, we talk Horizon Forbidden West, sequel to the incredible first entry of now-franchise, Horizon Zero Dawn. Does it improve enough to warrant a buy? Well, with Elden Ring out now as well (and receiving an incredibly positive critical reception), you may have to pick the open world that most fits your fancy. *Beer of the Week* Schneider-Weisse Aventinus Weizen-Dopplebock
We're very excited to announce our guest host Tilde! She's a unionist and organiser and twitch streamer and a confirmed poster and came on to talk to us about the Religious Freedom / Anti-Trans Kids Bill and to explain the sad machinations of our political parties. There's a content warning for our First Nations story which involves an Indigenous man who was killed by police, and the use of his name. The story runs from 44:40 to 55:50. Oh and by the way, sorry about the little peeps from Bagel. He was in dog jail while we recorded and was protesting his unfair treatment. This week we're serving up... Aperitifs: South Australian politicians did a sit-in in the Lower House to demand something that literally can't happen. And a Victorian Labor MP will likely be expelled from the party because she crossed the floor to support a petty revenge bill. First Nations: CW from 44:40 to 55:50. We talk about the murder trial of the Indigenous man killed by Officer Zachary Rolfe in Yuendumu in 2019. Kook Watch: This show could pretty much just be renamed Kook Watch at this point because there's so much cooker nonsense going on in the nation's capital that we have to keep talking about it. Luckily this week we also have... SPOTW: which goes to @ThoughtlessDeed on twitter for his personalised playing cards of all the key cooker leaders. And also a... Happy yesterday, listeners! Today is not the 4th of July, but it was when Matthew was drinking fireworks and Ben was drinking Freedom Fries or whatever. They lament going 0-for-LA with RISP before admitting that beating the Dodgers is a want, making the playoffs is a need. Later they discuss the improving bullpen and whether they were wrong to demand trades to improve. Spoiler alert: yes, but they won't admit it. Alcohol free content begins at 11:35

Season 3. Episode 1: Expos Funeral. And here’s the story we wanted to figure out for history: In the Fall of 2004, following a decade of fits and starts, Major League Baseball finally announced that the Expos would be leaving Montreal for Washington D.C. Just weeks later, a band of indie rockers from Montreal, calling themselves Arcade Fire, would arrive in New York and begin to take America by storm. Did Arcade Fire right a wrong? Were they manifested by Andre Dawson and Gary Carter? In the season three premier, Matty & Kevin test out a theory that they surely imagined but are also 100% convinced are real. The co-hosts believe that, in 2004, when the Montreal Expos left for Washington DC, the void that was left was replaced by Arcade Fire. In the post-9/11 era of “Freedom Fries,” Major League Baseball could not tolerate a colorful, European team from Canada. Their logical destination — the nation’s capitol. The crater that the left behind, however, was filled with Indie Rock. First, The Unicorns. Eventually, Wolf Parade. But within weeks of The Expos last game, it was the beloved, and iconoclastic Arcade Fire. On this episode, Matty & Kevin wonder if this rebalancing of the universe was metaphysical or whether it was a North American trade agreement. Then, with the help of DJ Steve Porter, known for his sports / music mash-ups, they get perspective from a musician who was straddling both worlds in 2004. Amazingly, Steve confirms that the trade was very real and widely understood in Montreal. What the city lost in sports, they gained in the most important band on Earth. Together, the trio then confirms that the Expo most likely to be invited into Arcade Fire was Andre Dawson (on drums) and that the band’s eventual debut in New York in the Fall of 2004 was very much an act of revolution. Finally, Matty and Kevin fast forward to 2016, when Win Butler led the Canadian celebrity All-Stars to a convincing victory against American funny-hipster, Jason Sudekis, and the American team. The Expos were gone. The Nationals were winning. But, for Montreal, justice had finally prevailed. Special thanks to Steve Porter and to Quincy, Gabe, Matt and the Blue Duck Media team for their work on this episode.

In this episode of RTN Theology hosts Bob Crawford and Keith Larson share personal reflections on the life of North Carolina 3rd District Congressman Walter B. Jones who passed away on February 10th, 2019. Jones served Eastern North Carolina in Congress and the State Legislature for over 34 years. He became a household name in the run up to the war in Iraq when he led a campaign to change the name of French fries to Freedom Fries. A couple of years into the war, he attended a funeral for a fallen soldier and had a spiritual conversion, becoming the first Republican in Congress to come out against the war. A fiercely independent politician and a devout Catholic, Jones' faith framed the way he viewed issues. Bob and Keith both shared a personal relationship with the Congressman. Keith interviewed Jones many times over the years as a radio host at WBT in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bob and Walter B. Jones first became friends through conversations about politics, but their friendship grew much deeper following Bob’s daughter’s illness.

This week it's about morality versus freedom. Are they at odds? Nah, America's got just enough of both. It's a damn good flapjack... *** Topic - Morality vs freedom From - Meredith Murphy ...Download the Media File
A simple telegram plunged America into the Great War. The Zimmermann telegram, intercepted by American intelligence in April 1917, revealed Germany’s efforts to encourage Mexico to invade the United States. For a towheaded kid from Arizona named Frank Luke, Jr., and other citizens of the states along the Mexican border, the threat of invasion was real and personal. Anti-German sentiment swept the nation that spring. Sauerkraut became “Victory Cabbage”, the precursor to Freedom Fries, and suspicion fell on families of German descent such as the Lukes, whose name had been Luecke just a generation before. The immigrants’ son Frank Luke, Jr. had a lot to prove when he joined the Army a few months later. By the time Luke completed flight training, received his commission, and joined the 27th Aero Squadron in France in July 1918, the surge of American forces onto the Western Front promised a swift end to the war – and the life expectancy of a pursuit pilot at the front was just three weeks. If Frank Luke was going to prove anything, he needed to work fast. In just a few months, he would demonstrate how well he could work under pressure, becoming one of the most decorated flyers of the First World War.
Freedom Fries Ain’t Free! This week on Let’s Get Real, Erica gets real about how war created foodiness; how foodiness created a nation of obese SUV driving potato people, who then needed oil for their SUVs (and now for their mobility scooters), and who now can’t pass the army physical fitness test because they’re too fat to fight. Tonight she is joined by special guest and First Gulf War veteran Corporal Chad Pagano to take us down the foodiness foxhole full of M.R.E.’s and, now, Marys. Hear him retell stories of food, hunger and everything in between in the military. This program was sponsored by Fairway Market “They have portable field kitchens they would set up behind the lines. Generally depending on the tactical situation you could end up going there three times a day. As an infantry man you’d be lucky if you got in there once a day. The food was pretty bad for the most part.” –Corporal Chad Pagano on Let’s Get Real
Professor Nancy Siegel tracks the origins of the use of food in American politics. From Election Cake to Freedom Fries, it's all food for thought.

Aprender ingles gratis con La Mansion del Ingles. Un podcast para mejorar la gramatica, el vocabulario y la pronunciacion del inglés. Una leccion del ingles con ejemplos y ejercicios.Learn English free with podcasts from La Mansion del Ingles. Improve your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. This English lesson contains examples and exercises. Podcast Transcription Good morning and welcome to another Mansión Inglés podcast from mansióninglés.com, recorded for February 2010. Is it two thousand and ten or twenty ten? I don’t know. Twenty ten has fewer syllables and it’s easier to say, but two thousand and ten seems more natural to me. I think we’ll have to wait and see what the majority of English speakers decide to say. Why not “two zero, one zero” just to be different? Anyway, here’s where we talk about English. English vocabulary, English grammar, English expressions, pronunciation; “pronunciation” British English, American English, Spanglish English. All hopefully, to improve your English a little. This month in our monthly newsletter – el cuaderno mensual, you probably saw a few general expressions in the basic section of the newsletter – la parte básico. If you did the exercise (and even if you didn’t) I want to test you. So I’m going to say the Spanish with my really bad Spanish pronunciation, and I want you to say the English translation before I do. So speak after you hear the tone. Di la traducción de las siguientes frases antes que las digo yo y después del tono. OK are you ready? ¿Listo? Gracias – Thank you. De nada - You’re welcome. ¿Qué tal? - How are you? No entiendo - I don’t understand. Tengo una reserva - I have a reservation ¿Cuánto cuesta? - How much is it? Quisiera un café - I’d like a coffee. ¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? - What’s your phone number? ¿Te puedo dar un beso? - Can I kiss you? - Can I kiss you? Tomaré lo mismo que ellos - I’ll have what they’re having. Now listen to the English again and repeat. Escucha y repite. Thank you You’re welcome How are you? I don’t understand I have a reservation How much is it? I’d like a coffee What’s your phone number? Can I kiss you? I’ll have what they’re having Good. Now let’s move on to the intermediate and advanced part of the newsletter where you saw vocabulary connected to the five senses – los cinco sentidos. Do you remember what the five senses are in English? oído - hearing vista - sight tacto - touch gusto - taste olor - smell We can use five basic verbs to talk about the five senses. Listen and repeat: to sound ; to look ; to feel ; to taste ; to smell These verbs are usually modified by an adjective, not an adverb. For example: My new iPod sounds fantastic. Repeat: My new iPod sounds fantastic. She looks really sexy. Repeat: She looks really sexy It felt weird (weird means raro o extraño). Repeat: It felt weird This chicken tastes wonderful. Repeat: This chicken tastes wonderful. The cake smelt delicious. Repeat: The cake smelt delicious. In the hearing exercise there were six adjectives to describe sound. Listen and repeat: noiseless – a noiseless environment. silent – a silent prayer. A prayer, P-R-A-Y-E-R is oración in Spanish. Repeat- a silent prayer. quiet – a quiet person noisy -. A noisy bar loud – loud music deafening – a deafening noise. Sordo is deaf, so we say a deaf person. “Can you hear me? Are you deaf?” - The verb is to deafen. And the adjective is deafening. Repeat: a deafening noise. Do you remember the sight vocabulary? Maybe there are some words here that you haven’t heard before. For example: to glimpse – vislumbrar. Glimpse is a verb and a noun. The noun glimpse likes to go together with the verb to catch. To catch a glimpse of something. What’s the past of the verb to catch? …….caught. ¡OJO! - Be careful of the pronunciation of caught C-A U-G-H-T. I caught a glimpse. Repeat..I caught a glimpse. I caught of glimpse of Penelope Cruz - I caught of glimpse of Penelope Cruz in a restaurant in Madrid last week. To catch a glimpse of someone or something. Then we had the verb to gaze - mirar fijamente I can gaze out of the window for hours just thinking of nothing. Actually I’m lucky to have a flat with a view of the sea, so I do gaze out of the window quite often. Just gazing out to sea and daydreaming – when I should be working! To daydream is soñar despierto/a. to stare also means mirar fijamente, but I think it is with more intensity - más intensidad - than to gaze. “Who are you staring at?” ¿A quién estás mirando? It’s staring you right in the face – Salta a la vista. “She was staring into the distance” - tenía la vista fija en la distancia o miraba fijamente a lo lejos. The verb to peer P-E-E-R means tratar de ver, esforzarse por ver. To look at something with difficulty.”He peered into the fog, but he couldn’t see anything.” “My grandmother peered at me over the top of her glasses.” to glance means to look quickly - echarle una ojeada o un vistazo a algo. “She glanced at me as I walked past her desk.” “We glanced at each other discreetly.” to notice is notar, o darse cuenta, o fijarse – “I didn't notice what he was wearing that day.” no me fijé en lo que llevaba ese día – “I noticed some words painted on the wall.” Me fijé en algunas palabras pintadas en la pared. Sight verbs often have the preposition at. To look at, to gaze at, to stare at, to glance at etc. The next group of words was connected to the verb to touch. Listen and repeat: to snatch – arrebater, arrancar – A thief snatched her handbag. to press – apretar – press the button to turn it on to grab – agarrar – Can you grab that box for me? to stroke – acariciar – My cat loves to be stroked. to tap – dar un golpecito a – The screen is touch-sensitive. Just tap on an icon to open an application. Next we had the verb to taste with some taste adjectives. How does a lemon taste? A lemon tastes sour. And sugar? Sugar tastes sweet Black coffee? Black coffee tastes bitter. Crisps are papas. In British English, we say crisps for papas. In American English, papas are chips or potato chips. Of course, chips in British English are patatas fritas. How do you say patatas fritas in American English? Fries or French fries. Well they used to say French fries before the Gulf War, and when France refused to support America against Iraq, French fries became Freedom Fries. So I don’t know what they are called in America now. Probably just fries. Anyway, how do crisps usually taste? Crisps or chips in the USA taste salty. Indian food, Mexican food, some Thai food taste very spicy. Repeat Spicy. I love spicy food, especially curry. One of the best things in the world is to go to the pub, drink 6 or 7 pints of good English beer and then go for a Curry in a good Indian restaurant. You should try that sometime. It’s good for your English. And finally, we had four adjectives connected to the sense of smell. Listen and repeat: scented – perfumado - repeat: scented – a scented candle fragrant – fragante - repeat: - a fragrant perfume smelly – que huele mal, maloliente - repeat: smelly feet stinking – apestoso/a, pestilente - repeat: stinking rubbish Listen and repeat: I feel great It tastes delicious That smells fantastic It sounds brilliant Hey, you look great He smells disgusting I never put vinegar on salads. It tastes too sour for me. She smiled at me, gazed into my eyes and I fell in completely in love with her. Strong cheese gets really smelly if you leave it out of the fridge too long in the summer. If I’m too noisy while my dad’s reading the newspaper, he peers over his glasses at me and stares at me until I’m quiet. To turn on the computer, press the silver button until you see a green light. You forgot to put the milk back in the fridge. It tastes sour. It must have gone off. Get your smelly feet off the table immediately! Would you mind if we went to a different pub? This one’s too noisy. I can’t hear myself think. Here’s some more vocabulary with the word ‘sense’. Listen to the Spanish and try to say the English word or expression before I do, then repeat to practise pronunciation. un sentido del oído - a SENSE of hearing un sentido del olfato - a SENSE of smell un sentido del gusto - a SENSE of taste un sentido del tacto - a SENSE of touch entrar en razón - to come to one's SENSES un sentido de la orientación – a SENSE of direction un sentido del humor – a SENSE of humour no tiene el más mínimo sentido del humor - He's got absolutely no sense of humour. perdí completamente la noción del tiempo - I lost all SENSE of time sentido común - common SENSE Tuvo la sensatez de dejar su número de contacto - She had the SENSE to leave her contact number no puedo hacerlo entrar en razón - I can't make him see SENSE ser comprensible, tener sentido - To make sense en cierto modo ambos tienen razón - In a SENSE they're both correct" - Esto no tiene sentido - That doesn't make SENSE lo que dijo era muy razonable - What he said made a lot of SENSE un sentido de la justicia - A SENSE of justice un sentido del ritmo - A SENSE of rhythm un sentido de la orientación - A SENSE of direction un sentido de satisfacción - A SENSE of satisfaction no tiene sentido ser violento - There is no SENSE in being violent dar un sentido de responsabilidad - to give a sense of responsibility buen juicio - good sense de cierto modo - in a sense dar sentido – to make sense sentido metafórico - metaphorical sense buen sentido al conducir - road sense sentido del deber - sense of duty sentido del bien y el mal - sense of right and wrong sexto sentido - sixth sense That was a podcast from mansioningles.com.
