In this episode, we shall look into five films of the silent era. Three of these films are now unfortunately lost: Robbing Cleopatra's Tomb (Cléopâtre) (1899), The Mummy (1911), and The Fool and Death (Narr und Tod) (1920).The other two films, survive to this day, Die Augen der Mumie Ma (1918), and Egyptian Melodies (1931), a Disney film which although not technically a silent film, is relevant nonetheless.Email: mummymoviepodcast@gmail.comBibliographyAlcott, L. Unless otherwise noted, all Web addresses mentioned were functional as of 9-15-21. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of September 20, 2021.  This revised episode from October 2015 is part of a series this fall of episodes on water connections to the human body and human biology. MUSIC – 16 sec – Instrumental That's part of “Halloween,” by John McCutcheon on his 1998 album “Autumnsongs.”  In this first week of autumn, with Halloween merchandise already in stores and on some people's minds, that organ music sets the stage for exploring a vital human organ system that's also one of Halloween's most familiar spectres.  Have a listen for about 15 second to some mystery sounds, and see if you can guess that organ system.  And here's a hint: we couldn't move at all, much less rattle around, without this remarkable framework. SOUNDS  - 13 sec If you guessed the skeleton or skeletal system, you're right!  The rattling you heard was from a plastic Halloween skeleton, accompanied by some creepy laughter from a talking skull decoration.  Since ancient times, human skeletons have been used in art, literature, and culture as symbols of danger, death, and dryness. In fact, the word “skeleton” comes from Latin and Greek words meaning “dried up.”  But there's nothing dead nor dry about a functioning human skeleton.  Our 206 bones contain active cells and tissues that continually take in and release calcium and phosphorus while producing new bone, blood, and fat cells. Bone is about 25 to 30 percent water by weight, with the rest consisting of minerals plus connective protein fibers called collagen.  Water is the main component of cartilage, the relatively flexible tissue in our nose and ears and between bones, including in the disks between the vertebrae in our spine.  In those spinal disks, cartilage fibers enclose a watery core, and this water's resistance to being compressed helps vertebrae move while not being pushed together. Ligaments and tendons join bone and cartilage in the complex, multi-purpose skeletal system.  Aided by water, the skeleton supports the body; protects internal organs; produces cells; and provides levers, pivot points, and cushions to the forces acting on and within the body.  All that, and it's also a classic Halloween image! Thanks to John McCutcheon and Appalseed Productions for permission to use this week's music, and we get the jump on the season of scary skeletons with about 25 more seconds of “Halloween.” MUSIC – 28 sec – Lyrics: “For just one night, I'm allowed to fantasize.  Halloween, here we go.” SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Ben Cosgrove for his version of “Shenandoah” to open and close the show.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of September 6, 2021.  This revised episode from October 2017 is part of a series this fall of episodes on water connections to the human body and human biology. SOUND - ~3 secHow is a human heartbeat part of a water story?  Have a listen for about 25 seconds to the following mystery sounds, and see if you can guess the heart-and-water connections they represent.  And here's a hint: if you have the energy, you could follow many branches to this solution.SOUNDS - ~21 secYou've been listening to sounds from a platelets donation at the American Red Cross' New River Valley Donor Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.  The sounds—a blood-pressure measurement, a needle stick into an arm vein, and the machine separating blood components and recirculating fluid to the patient—illustrate three connections between the human circulatory system and water.First, the heart provides a force—measured by blood pressure—to keep blood circulating around the body, like the sun's energy powers evaporation and winds that help keep water circulating around the earth.  Second, arm veins are part of an intricately branched system of arteries, veins, and capillaries, resembling a watershed's branching pattern as one travels uphill from ocean to river to headwater streams.   Humans have an estimated 60,000 to 100,000 miles of blood vessels, compared to Virginia's approximately 100,000 miles of rivers and streams.  Finally, blood's components are mostly water: blood plasma is a solution of water and many biochemicals, mixed with water-based red and white blood cells and with platelets.  As a result, blood in the human system has water's physical and chemical properties for transporting materials and regulating heat.Cells and transported substances make blood “thicker” than water, just as the saying goes.  But the water we borrow temporarily from the global water cycle is at the chemical and physical heart of blood and the circulatory system's vital functions. Thanks to staff at the New River Valley Donor Center for participating in this episode, and thanks to Soundbible.com for the heartbeat sound. We close with some music inspired by the action of the human heart.  Here's about 20 seconds of “Heartbeat,” by the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Va.-based band, The Steel Wheels. MUSIC - ~23 sec –Lyrics - “Feel my heartbeat comin' in next to you; heartbeat, yes you do.” SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment. AUDIO NOTES AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This Virginia Water Radio episode revises and replaces Episode 392, 10-30-17, and Episode 236, 10-20-14. To recreate a whole and sacred America, it is important to piece together the forgotten fragments of history that are currently keeping the country divided. The most significant forgotten piece is the profound effect Native America had on the founding values of this nation. Join Oren Lyons, Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga Nation, author of Exiled in the Land of the Free: Democracy, Indian Nations, and the US Constitution, and Bruce Johansen, author of Forgotten Founders: How the American Indian Helped Shape Democracy, for a scintillating peak into the true history of America. Dear listener, due to some noise on the phone lines, the sound quality on this episode has been somewhat compromised. We hope this will not prevent you from enjoying this fascination discussion. “It's about time that people in our country woke up to who was doing what to whom.” ~Bruce Johansen “The American public has been deliberately kept ignorant of the real history of this nation…Let's have a real talk, not an I'm sorry talk. That doesn't cut it. How do you reconcile that the greatest genocide at the time took place right here on this continent after Columbus arrived” ~ Oren Lyons Glenn Aparicio Parry, PhD, of Basque, Aragon Spanish, and Jewish descent, is the author of Original Politics: Making America Sacred Again (SelectBooks, 2020) and the Nautilus award-winning Original Thinking: A Radical Revisioning of Time, Humanity, and Nature (North Atlantic Books, 2015). Parry is an educator, ecopsychologist, and political philosopher whose passion is to reform thinking and society into a coherent, cohesive, whole. The founder and past president of the SEED Institute, Parry is currently the director of a grass-roots think tank, the Circle for Original Thinking and is debuting this podcast series of the same name in conjunction with Ecology Prime. He has lived in northern New Mexico since 1994. www.originalpolitics.us Oren Lyons is Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga nation, and his history as an advocate for Indigenous and environmental justice goes back to the Red Power movement of the 1960s. Oren went on to become a leader in Native American right movements in the 1970s, including his important role in the Trail of Broken Treaties caravan which marched on Washington in 1972. He helped establish the United Nations working group on Indigenous rights and is the recipient of many honors, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the National Audubon Society's Audubon medal, The Earth Day International Award of the United Nations, and the Elder and Wiser Award from the Rosa Parks Institute for Human Rights. Oren served as Professor of American Studies and Director of the Native American Studies program at the State University of New York-Buffalo for more than three decades. He has authored many books and articles, and was the editor for Exiled in the Land of the Free, a 1992 book that made the case for the influence of the ideas and values of the Iroquois Confederacy on American democracy and the Constitution.  Bruce E. Johansen is a Frederick W. Kayser Research Professor emeritus of Communication and Native American Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In the late 1970s, Bruce wrote his doctoral dissertation on the influence of Native America on the founding of the United States. This research would lead to the publication of Forgotten Founders (Harvard Common Press, 1982). He has since authored dozens of books, including Global Warming in the 21st Century (Praeger, 2006), The Global Warming Desk Reference (Greenwood Press, 2001), The Dirty Dozen: Toxic Chemicals and the Earth's Future (Praeger, 2003), Indigenous Peoples and Environmental Issues (Greenwood Press, 2003), and Silenced! Burma was a mountainous country nestled between British India and Japan occupied China. Prior to 1941, Burma was of little importance to countries such as Great Britain and the United States. The mountainous region of Burma discouraged any type of trade or travel. Only once did the campaign of the Japanese to control Southeast Asia began, did Great Britain and the United States realize the value of Burma. From the beginning, Great Britain and the United States agreed that Burma was strategic in defeating Japan. Interestingly enough, Great Britain and the United States differed in their motives for protecting Burma. First, Great Britain viewed Burma as a barrier between British India and Japan occupied China. The barrier between these two countries would secure the safety of the “Crown Jewel of the British Empire”. In contrast, the United States saw Burma as a lifeline for China, which was under occupation by Japan. The United States believed that if they were to hold Burma, the Chinese could overthrow Japan and take back their country. The continued support of the Chinese was an effort by Franklin D. Roosevelt to gain a potential ally in China. References Xu, Guangqiu. War Wings: The United States and Chinese Military Aviation 1929-1949. Greenwood Press (2001). American Office of War Information. In which we discuss the British investigation into the causes for the Rebellions... before they actually ended... and the controversial report by Lord Durham that resulted from it! NOTE: Patrick refers to the report as "unofficial". It was considered official by the British and, for all intents and purposes, is. Patrick used that term because of the odd circumstances surrounding its creation, but that might not be clear for listeners. Also, Mackenzy swears a lot in this one (yes, I'm throwing him under the bus). Durham just brings out the worst in people! -- Sources & Further Reading: Buckner, Phillip A. Welcome to our first ever listener question episode! Thanks to Deb for this intriguing idea. 1:00 Tom Shippey, sources 1:20 Hi Deb! 1:37 Orc clans - warlike 1:50 Sauron and Morgoth found ways to unite them. 2:00 Nature of evil 2:30 People asked Tolkien this very question! Specifically Peter Hastings, the manager of the Newman Catholic Bookshop. 2:50 Naturally bad, but not irredeemably bad. 3:20 Who is Tom Shippey? 4:20 Orcs made by Morgoth 4:30 Evil can’t create, can only corrupt. 5:00 Morgoth made orcs in mockery of the elves and Eru. 5:15 It’s an example of subverting God’s will. 5:30 Orcs in other literature are generally derived from Tolkien (discussion of Bright). 7:10 Orcs and loyalty. See Tom Shippey’s Orcs, Wraiths, and Wights. Orcs show knowledge of good and evil. 7:38 “Regular Elvish Trick” 8:00 Elvish = bad, orcs are the opposite of elves. 8:20 Dan thought orcs would have opposite morals but they don’t. 8:40 Elves can be bad too, just look at Fëanor (or Eöl). 8:50 Orcs are the infantry of the old war against the Vala and the elves in the first age. 9:18 Morgoth put his power into his works, the evil dilutes. 9:40 Erica’s amazing hand gestures. 9:50 Morgoth’s diluted evil - this idea has spread to other fantasy. 10:14 The dilution of evil is also dilution of control, so Sauron has a harder time controlling them than Morgoth did. 10:20 Tolkien tossed around the idea of a hive mind, but never really settled on it. They misbehave. 10:40 Ocrs that were elves vs. orcs that were men? 11:00 Orcs vs. goblins - idea for future research for Erica! Or, if you know, please tell us where Erica can look it up! 11:20 Goblins/elves = Moria, Orcs/men = Mordor? (upon further consideration, Erica doesn’t think this part is terribly likely because both of those places are extremely far East considering when orcs came into being) 12:10 We solved everything! Wait… not in any way… 12:27 Melkor corrupted orcs and they serve him out of fear. 12:47 The alternative is unpleasant 13:00 Born, not manufactured like the goo chamber in Orthanc in the movies. 14:00 Initial group created in the first age and the rest descended from them. 14:20 Is the goo chamber in Orthanc corruption? (Erica needs to watch the special features again) 14:54 Could there be a good orc? Yes. Not irredeemable. 15:00 It’s important to Tolkien to have redemption as an option. 15:24 Catholic background - post-fall beings with free will 15:50 Nothing can be created without Eru Tokien’s letters p 195 - “by accepting or tolerating their making… orcs would become part of the World, which is God’s and ultimately good”. 16:28 Orcs know good and evil so they MUST be redeemable. 16:40 Only Eru could create things with independent thought 17:05 Eru wouldn’t sanction Melkor’s works like he did Aulë’s. 17:24 Corruption isn’t inheritable 17:50 Don’t know about socialization of orcs. 18:00 Children of a warlike, violent life.   References: A lot of research went into this episode. Most of the information is from the following resources. Erica’s reference librarian brain is annoyed that these citations are not in a style or alphabetized, but she’s in a bit of a hurry today. Season 3 of the podcast continues with Victoria Barnett! Dr. Barnett recently visited Saint Leo University at the invitation of our Center for Catholic Jewish Studies to speak on theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. She sat down to speak with Steve Okey (with an assist from Center Director Matt Tapie) about how studying liberation theology set her on the path to Bonhoeffer, her work with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, and what the study of Bonhoeffer can teach us about Christian and religious life today.   Dr. Victoria Barnett is the Director of Programs on Ethics, Religion, and the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. She is an alumna of Indiana University, Union Theological Seminary, and George Mason University. She has published several books, including For the Soul of the People: Protestant Protest Against Hitler (Oxford, 1992) and Bystanders: Conscience and Complicity during the Holocaust (Greenwood Press, 1999). From 2004-14, she was one of the general editors for The Complete Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works Series from Fortress Press. Special thanks for this episode to Dr. Matthew Tapie, Director of the Center for Catholic Jewish Studies at Saint Leo University, for all his work to bring Rabbi Skorka to campus and for making this conversation possible.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Robert Matzen, Author of Mission: Jimmy Stewart and the Fight for Europe. About Robert Matzen: Robert Matzen is the author of seven books, including the award-winning Errol & Olivia: Ego & Obsession in Golden Era Hollywood and the bestselling Fireball: Carole Lombard and the Mystery of Flight 3, which rose to #2 on the Amazon bestseller list for Biographies, won the 2015 ‘Biography of the Year' Benjamin Franklin Award, and earned praise from the Smithsonian Institution. Regularly interviewed by international press, including the New York Post, Hollywood Reporter, and BBC, Matzen's previous print work includes many articles about classic films, and the Greenwood Press reference volume, Carole Lombard: A Bio-Bibliography. His work as a filmmaker earned national awards and his feature documentary about George Washington, When the Forest Ran Red, is a genre classic. He has also written and directed several films for NASA. In March 1941, Jimmy Stewart, America's boy next door and recent Academy Award winner, left fame and fortune behind and joined the United States Army Air Corps to fulfill his family mission and serve his country. He rose from private to colonel and participated in 20 often-brutal World War II combat missions over Germany and France. In mere months the war took away his boyish looks as he faced near-death experiences and the loss of men under his command. The war finally won, he returned home with millions of other veterans to face an uncertain future, suffering what we now know as PTSD. Younger stars like Gregory Peck were now getting roles that might have been Stewart's, and he didn't know if he would ever work in Hollywood again. Then came It's a Wonderful Life.
