ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult

This episode offers a scholarly exploration into the ancient Japanese spirituality of Shinto, or Kami-no-Michi, to understand Shinto's core principles and rituals, unravelling its place within historical contexts and modern esoteric traditions. We address pivotal questions central to Shinto's spiritual narrative: * How do Shinto practices integrate into the daily lives of the Japanese? * What are the historical origins of Shinto rituals like Misogi and Saisen? * In what ways do Omikuji and Omamori embody the intersection of faith and practice? * How do the ceremonies of Shinto reflect Japan's cultural ethos and the broader animistic worldview? We delve into the Misogi ritual of purification, the meaning behind the traditional offering of Saisen, and the significance of bell-ringing in shrine visits. We demystify the Omikuji practice of fortune-telling and the role of Omamori as protective talismans, examining their relevance to both adherents and curious scholars. This video not only shares vivid images and descriptions from my recent visit to Japan but also embeds these experiences within a framework of peer-reviewed scholarship. It is an indispensable resource for those studying comparative religion, Japanese culture, or the diverse expressions of the sacred in daily life. CONNECT & SUPPORT

This video didn't contain the typically fabricated sounds of a library that someone had layered over each other like book pages turning and a fireplace crackling in the background, but a live recording of the sounds of a public library out there in the world. These sounds are what helped her to get through the isolation she felt during those long months at home. Having now been surrounded by ideas about libraries for the last two years, Maia decided to investigate the different sounds of libraries, how they have changed over time, and how they make people feel. For this episode, Maia interviews three staff members of the Edmonton Public Library Stanley A. Milner branch who work in unique spaces to get their perspectives on the way sound affects patrons and staff members alike. She interviews staff members who have worked in the Makerspace, Gamerspace, and the children's library in order to explore the relationship between feeling and sound in libraries, and how the sounds of libraries have changed over time. SpokenWeb is a monthly podcast produced by the SpokenWeb team as part of distributing the audio collected from (and created using) Canadian Literary archival recordings found at universities across Canada. The only Portuguese monarch to be assassinated, King Carlos I, was shot through the neck by Republican activists on 1st February, 1908, as his open carriage rode through Lisbon. His elder son Luis Filipe was also killed, leaving 18 year-old Manuel to become the last King of Portugal. The murder followed Portugal's former colony Brazil deposing its emperor; a politically disastrous agreement with the British over African expansion; and the appointment of the dictatorial João Franco as Portuguese Prime Minister. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly pore over the gossip about Carlos's lavish lifestyle and Parisian mistress; explain how the event was foreshadowed by the famous ‘Elevator Coup'; and reveal how Carlos's sea-faring knowledge made for an ill-advised epithet…  Further Reading: • ‘Historical Dictionary of Portugal - By Douglas L. Fifty Key Stage Musicals: The Podcast

WICKED COMPOSER: Stephen Schwartz LYRICIST: Stephen Schwartz BOOK: Winnie Holzman SOURCE: Gregory Maguire's book Wicked: The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of The West (1995) DIRECTOR: Joe Mantello CHOREOGRAPHER: Wayne Cilento PRINCIPLE CAST: Norbert Leo Butz (Fiyero), Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda), Idina Menzel (Elphaba),  OPENING DATE: Oct 30, 2003 CLOSING DATE: Still running as of this publication PERFORMANCES: +6000 SYNOPSIS:  Elphaba is a guarded young lady who is inflicted with green skin. Her roommate Glinda is an outgoing, popular student. Together, they navigate life at Oz's Shiz University. Their rocky partnership is made even more tumultuous when they discover they are both in love with Fiyero, a fellow classmate.  Though its tryouts and opening were met with mixed reviews, Wicked has maintained international popularity. Beginning with composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz's first encounter with Gregory Maguire's book, Wicked's path to Broadway included some of the American theatre industry's most notable talents, including Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Joe Mantello, and Wayne Cilento. Lauren Haughton makes the argument that the inclusion of screenwriter Winnie Holzman as the librettist for Wicked allowed the show to examine the relationships of adolescent girls in a uniquely authentic way, positing the musical as a pioneering exploration of feminine friendship. The musical's employment and subversion of standard musical theatre conventions is outlined through a feminist lens and broad ideologies of mainstream feminist movements are applied to the show's storyline. Winnie Holzman is an American dramatist, screenwriter, and poet. She is known for having created the ABC television series My So Called Life which led to a nomination for a scriptwriting Emmy Award in 1995, as well as her work writing for thirtysomething and Once and Again Holzman has garnered fame for her work on Broadway, most notably for co-writing the smash stage musical Wicked. Lauren Haughton Gillis is currently an Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre at Indiana University. She has served on faculty at Northwestern University and San Diego State University. As a director/choreographer she recently finished a fellowship at the La Jolla Playhouse on their production of Fly. Earlier this season she choreographed She Loves Me at San Diego Musical Theatre, was the associate director on Jesca Prudencio's PDA at the La Jolla Playhouse Without Walls Festival and directed and choreographed the world premiere of The Magic Hummingbird. As a performer, Lauren appeared on Broadway in Wicked, at the Goodman Theatre in Turn of the Century (with Tommy Tune), at The Old Globe in Sammy (with Leslie Bricusse), and at Maine State Music Theatre in Hans Christian Anderson (with Maury Yeston) Lauren holds an MFA in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University and a BFA in Musical Theatre from Syracuse University.  SOURCES Wicked, Original Cast Recording, Decca (2003) Wicked: The Grimmerie, a Behind the Scenes Look at the Hit Broadway Musical by David Cote and Joan Marcus, published by Hachette Books (2005) Unnaturally Green: One Girl's Journey Along a Yellow Brick Road Less Traveled by Felicia Ricci, published by Felicia/Ricci (2011) A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love, and Faith in Stages by Kristin Chenoweth, published by Touchstone (2010) How Wicked Made It to the Stage by Jeri Freedman, published by Cavendish Square Publishing (2018) Wicked: A Musical Biography by Paul R. Dear Dashhounds, are you one of the 75% (15% according to Beth) who know the term, Dewey Decimal System? Do you care? You will today as Strange Country hosts Beth and Kelly discuss the life and times of Melvil Dewey, which really encompassed a lot of misogyny, racism and antisemitism. Yet still he was lauded as a library great. How do we handle these people of the past, and how should we handle them now? Caregiver Connection Podcast
The Beetles Wrote This Song For You

Caregiver Connection Podcast

“Help… I need somebody…” Do you remember the Beetle's song?  I read the other day that Lennon wrote the song as an expression of the stress he was feeling due to the group's quick success as a band. It was a song from his heart. He was overwhelmed and knew his lifestyle, as it was, wasn't sustainable. John Lennon took a look at his life and knew he needed a change and he couldn't do it on his own. When was it that you realized you were over your head with caregiving and why is it so hard for you to ask for help? Write that down if you want… take a moment to think about it. When was it that you realized you were over your head with caregiving and why is it so hard for you to ask for help? Let all of that anger and frustration come out first. I know it's there. I've had the same thoughts. I know how it feels to be angry with the world. Asking why this has happened to me? This isn't the life I thought I would be living. I don't know if I can keep doing this. No one asks or cares how I am doing. Everyone wants to offer help for my loved one but I actually need help too.  Let that all out. Dump all of those words into a journal or record them into your phone. Don't let them circulate in your mind anymore. You need to read them or hear them. That way you'll begin to process those emotions in a different way.  Then, when you're done with that, I want you to come to the main questions.  When was it that you realized you were over your head with caregiving and why is it so hard for you to ask for help?  I know that the moment you become a caregiver everything is turned upside down and you find yourself overwhelmed with all the things you need to do to fight this threat in your life. The threat of cancer, the threat of a traumatic accident, the threat of disease, and disability. Your brain automatically goes into survivor mode and you find yourself unable to concentrate, unable to function in life, or do anything else. All you are focused on at first is what needs to be done in order to figure out what the heck is going on. How do I keep my loved one alive? But at some point, you have a break. You have that moment when for maybe just a second you take a breath and realize you can't keep doing things like this. Without you having a chance to notice, your life is completely different YOU are completely different.  You realize you can't do this all on your own.  That was when you found yourself at a fork in the road. You had the awareness that would allow you to continue on with doing it all on your own or try to figure out how to get some help.  There are lyrics in the song “Help” that say “When I was younger, so much younger than today I never needed anybody's help in any way” We all remember those days. When life felt so much easier because looking back at it now … looking back at your pre-caregiving life… whatever you thought was hard then feels like nothing now after all you've gone through. If you think about it, Lennon was acknowledging that he's changed. His life is different and he is different. The second half of that verse is: “But now these days are gone, I'm not so self-assured (but now these days are gone) (And now I find) now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors” Lennon realized that he not only needs help but that he is open to receiving that help. Opening up the doors to receive help That's the next step. Knowing you need help and being open to being helped are two different things. Being open to having help means you have to let go of some of the control you think you have. You have to be open to people doing things a different way. You have to be open to things not being perfect.  It takes energy to ask for help. You need the energy to handle the personal dynamic between you and the person you are getting help from. You need to find the energy to figure out what you need help with. People who care about you might not necessarily know how to help you. That's why so many times we hear  “Let me know how I can help”  or  “Call me whenever you need something.”  To a caregiver, that means nothing because it places the burden on us to figure out what and who to ask for help. We can't change how people offer help but we are in full control of when and how we ask for it. If you're a caregiver you should know that things don't happen when you are passive. Not only do you have to advocate for the person you are caring for you also have to advocate for yourself.  Finding the courage to ask The hardest part is… asking for help means you have to be vulnerable. You may feel like you should be able to handle everything. You actually may have not asked for help as an adult before and don't really know how to do it. Or you could see asking for help as a failure on your part to be able to cope.  Let's just remember that the person you are caring for has a full team of people who are helping and who are specialized at what they do. Not ever did you think - we can handle that surgery on our own, or we can run those blood tests at home… I'll figure it out. That is unheard of. You probably emphatically asked - who can help them? Who's the best surgeon that we can find?  So why wouldn't you do the same thing for yourself? Why does it feel so hard or wrong to get together a team of your own? Our lives have changed The next verse of “Help” by the Beetles reads: And now my life has changed in oh so many ways (and now my life has changed) My independence seems to vanish in the haze But every now and then I feel so insecure (I know that I) I know that I just need you like I've never done before If that isn't the most precise and beautiful verse to characterize what we all go through as caregivers I don't know what is! Our lives have changed without us even being able to have the luxury of witnessing that change. Because of that change in our lives, we become different people and at some point, we might find that we don't exactly like who we are. There comes a day when you actually… really look at yourself in the mirror and not recognize who you are anymore. Or maybe you had one small second to realize you aren't very happy.  Looking back on your life as a caregiver,  you probably can see how you have lost some of your independence. Having this strong sense of duty towards the person you care for you probably let go of a lot of who you are. When we are overwhelmed the last thing we think of doing is to continue our weekly coffee dates with a friend or taking those walks that used to really help clear our heads. You let go of playing or singing that music or reading that pile of books you were excited to have. We lose ourselves in caregiving, especially in the beginning, and because of that, we are filled with insecurities. We become a mess. A bundle of stress and anxiety mixed in with overwhelming worry and feelings of inadequacy because we have been thrown into a role we are not trained for and have no experience to pull from to help us. Lennon realizes this is where he is and then he says, “I know that I just need you like I've never done before.” That line brings tears to my eyes. Here is this man writing this song from his heart and being truly open and honest with what is going on in his life at that moment. He doesn't close himself off to the people around him but he instead says, I need you! You have to find the courage to be open and vulnerable enough to be able to ask for help. However, you have two choices. You can continue as you are… angry that no one is really helping you and trying to do it on your own. Or you can let go of some of that resentment and anger towards the world, let down some of that armor you put on to try to protect yourself, and ask. for. help. What do I need help with? When I work with caregivers this is a process we go through early on. Sometimes you just need someone that can support you in reaching out to your network of people to ask for help. Oftentimes we are so overwhelmed with things that we can't even think of what we could actually get help with. However, you need your own support team. Sometimes that support isn't from what task they can do for you but to just be able to be there to help you work things out in your head. Someone that can support you just by listening or just by being around. There are people who are better suited to help out with tasks. You have to identify what they are good at or the types of things they like to do before asking them to help. There is someone in your life that loves mowing the lawn or shoveling snow just don't ask them to be the person that bakes you cookies if that isn't something they know or like to do.  Once you get yourself to a place where you are ready to ask for help then you have to carefully think of what you need help with and who can fit that role. Sometimes that might mean you hire someone to do it because, just like a surgeon, they are skilled at that one thing. Once you have the tasks figured out and identify who you would like to reach out to for that specific task. Then you need to figure out how you are going to ask for it.  Asking for help is a big roadblock for the caregivers I work with. Asking for help means that you are opening yourself up for disappointment and rejection. It doesn't often happen, especially if you have gone through a well-thought-out process of figuring out who and what you need help with but the fear of someone saying no or not showing up is always there. It's ok to be nervous to ask for help. Think of it this way… you had no problem making that doctor's appointment for your loved one. In fact, you were probably upset that they wouldn't get you in sooner or that you have to wait for results from a scan. We feel so much more entitled to the help we want for our loved ones and a little bit of that energy can be useful in finding the courage to create your own team of people.  I read that a Music critic, Dave Marsh, wrote about the song saying “… it's bursting with vitality… [Lennon] sounds triumphant because he's found a group of kindred spirits who are offering the very spiritual assistance and emotional support for which he's begging. Marsh continues to explain the performance “…speak(s) to the heart of Lennon's passion, and though they cannot cure the wound, at least they add a note of reassurance that he's not alone with his pain.” (Sullivan, Steve (2013). Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings. Scarecrow Press. p. 224.) Listen to (Read) that again.  Lennon “sounds triumphant, because he's found a group of kindred spirits who are offering the very spiritual assistance and emotional support for which he's begging. …and though they cannot cure the wound, at least they add a note of reassurance that he's not alone with his pain.” That is what you can look forward to having if you go through the careful process of identifying what you need help with and who the best people are to ask for that help. Imagine, for just a minute, how it would feel to have people in your life that can support you spiritually and emotionally. We try to say that it is the stress of caregiving that breaks us down but that is also because we aren't continually meeting our emotional and spiritual needs. So to have a group of people that are there just for that could have a big impact on your life.  Having a team of people helping you also would give you that reassurance that you aren't alone, you don't have to do this all alone and that there are people out there that are willing to support you. There really are people out there that truly want to help. Just sometimes we let fear, and pride and stress, and exhaustion get in the way of us asking.  Finding your own team is one of the most important things for you to do as a caregiver. Often times it is difficult to do on your own and if that's the case please ask someone to help you figure it out or we can work together and find a way for you to begin to love your caregiving life. (Sorry this upload is a bit late!) In this episode, Laura and Will talk about Joël Gustave Nana Ngongang and Laura recommends: https://nuerda.org/. As of this episode, we are going on hiatus! Some of you may have noticed that the past couple of podcast episodes have come with a note saying that there are some issues with the audio quality. This is because our new apartment has a couple of noise sources our old one didn't. We have been trying a couple of things to combat this, but a new family with young children just moved in upstairs, and unfortunately, it seems like it is only likely to get worse.  Luckily, I have been doing some research, and there is a free-to-use recording studio at one of our local libraries, and I think recording the podcast there would be a fantastic solution. Unfortunately, because of COVID19, the studio is not open to podcasters right now. So in order to allow for the best possible quality of sound for future episodes, we have decided to go on hiatus! I am very excited for when we can start the podcast up again, but in the meantime, you can always re-listen to old episodes or read the articles on our websites. We also have a very exciting project this month that's all about King Kristina, so see our social media for that! As always, thank you so much for listening, and if you have any questions or comments, you can reach us at queerhistorypatreon@gmail.com.   [Disclaimer: some of the sources may contain triggering material] (2015). Listen to a conversation about race, class and geography with Keenan Norris and Crystal Sykes. Winner of the 2012 James D. Houston Award, Keenan Norris’s first novel is a beautiful, gritty, coming-of-age tale about two young African Americans in the San Bernardino Valley—a story of exceptional power, lyricism, and depth. Erycha and Touissant live only a few miles apart in the city of Highland, but their worlds are starkly separated by the lines of class, violence, and history. In alternating chapters that touch and intertwine only briefly, Brother and the Dancer follows their adolescence and young adulthood on two sides of the city, the luminous San Bernardino range casting its hot shade over their separate tales in an unflinching vision of black life in Southern California. Keenan Norris teaches English and African-American Literature and helps conduct the Affirm program at Evergreen Valley College. His work has appeared in the Santa Monica, Green Mountains and Evansville Reviews, Connotation Press, Inlandia: A Literary Journey Through California’s Inland Empire and BOOM: A Journal of California. He is also the editor of Scarecrow Press’s upcoming collection of critical essays, Street Lit. Crystal Sykes is a writer, photographer and blogger residing in San Francisco, California. Graduating from San Francisco State University with a degree in Magazine Journalism, her first feature story, "The Black Exodus" won the award for Best Feature in Xpress Magazine. Most recently, her feature story "I'm Not Your 'Black Friend'" remains one of The Bold Italic's most read story of the year for it's commentary on privilege and ironic racism.

New Jersey. Home to Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Yo La Tango. . .and the Misfits, a hardcore metal horror rock band from Lodi. In This Music Leaves Stains: The Complete Story of the Misfits (Scarecrow Press, 2013), James Greene Jr. let’s us in on the career of the band and of the various people who have claimed membership within it. The focus, of course, is on the “classic” Walk Among Us version of the band consisting of Jerry Only (the member with the longest tenure in the band), his brother Doyle, Arthur Googy and, arguably the most famous member, Glenn Danzig. Greene’s story highlights the ongoing personal conflicts within the Misfits, conflicts that broke-up some versions of the band only to create new ones. Along the way, Danzig becomes a certified rock star with his eponymously-named band, Danzig, Jerry and Doyle continue on with the Misfits until a rift sends Doyle out of the band, with Jerry continuing on to this day with the Misfits band, music, and (significantly) iconography. After the huge success of Elvis Presley there was a moment when it looked as if rock ‘n’ roll might, indeed, be nothing more than a fad. Its successor in the world of popular music would be folk music, and its undisputed leader was the Kingston Trio. In Greenback Dollar: The Incredible Rise of the Kingston Trio (The Scarecrow Press, 2013) William J. Bush details the history of this landscape altering band. In it, Bush details the biographies of, first, the original three members of the band – Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane, and Dave Guard – and their meteoric rise to fame from 1958 through 1961. He then tells of the falling out and eventual replacement of Guard with John Stewart and the continued artistic and commercial success of the band through the sixties. Along the way, Bush (a friend of all the members of these two incarnations of the band) describes the important places and events that led to the massive popularity that followed the Trio. So rock music never did fade away, but the influence of folk, thanks in large part to the Kingston Trio, became an integral part of popular music for decades to come. William J. Bush is a music journalist whose articles have appeared in a number of music magazines including Acoustic Guitar, Frets, Pennsylvania Heritage, The Guitar Player Handbook, and Artists of American Folk Music. Additionally, he has written for EMI/Capital Records, Folk Era Records, Bear Family Records, and Shout! Factory. He also appears in the 2006 documentary “The Kington Trio: Wherever We May Go.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

MAGNETIZEDTerence Blanchard (trumpet) is one of the most important musician/composer/band leaders of his generation. His emotionally moving and technically refined playing is considered by many jazz aficionados to recall earlier jazz trumpet styles. Born March 13, 1962, in New Orleans, the only child to parents Wilhelmina and Joseph Oliver Blanchard, a part-time opera singer and insurance company manager, the young Blanchard was encouraged by his father, Joseph Oliver, to learn to play the piano. In the third grade he discovered jazz trumpet when a big band, featuring Alvin Alcorn on trumpet, played at a school assembly. In his teens Blanchard attended the New Orleans Center of Creative Arts, where he studied and played with saxophonist Donald Harrison. While performing with Lionel Hampton's big band, he studied for two years at Rutgers University under the tutelage of Paul Jeffrey and Bill Fielder. In 1982 Blanchard replaced Wynton Marsalis under his recommendation in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, working in that band up to 1986 as lead soloist and musical director. He then co-led a prominent quintet with saxophonist Donald Harrison, recording seven albums for the Concord, Columbia, and Evidence record labels in five years, including a stirring in-concert tribute to the Eric Dolphy/Booker Little ensemble. In the '90s, Blanchard became a leader in his own right, recording for the Columbia label, performing on the soundtracks to Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing and Mo' Better Blues, and composing the music for Lee's film Jungle Fever. In fact, Blanchard has written the score for every Spike Lee film since 1991, including Malcolm X, Clockers, Summer of Sam, 25th Hour, Inside Man, and the Hurricane Katrina documentary When the Levees Broke for HBO. With over 40 scores to his credit, Blanchard and Mark Isham are the most sought-after jazz musicians to ever compose for film. In the fall of 2000, Blanchard was named artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Keeping up with his love of live performance and touring, Blanchard also maintains a regular studio presence, recording his own original music for the Columbia, Sony Classical, and Blue Note labels. Albums include The Billie Holiday Songbook (1994), Romantic Defiance (1995), The Heart Speaks (1996), the acclaimed Wandering Moon (2000), Let's Get Lost (2001), Bounce (2003), and especially Flow (2005), which was produced by pianist Herbie Hancock and received two Grammy nominations. Blanchard has been nominated for 11 Grammys and has won four in total, including awards for New York Scene with Blakey (1984) and the soundtrack A Tale of God's Will in 2007. In 2005, Blanchard was part of McCoy Tyner's ensemble that won the Grammy in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category for Illuminations. A quintessential sideman as well as leader, he has worked with prominent jazz players including Cedar Walton, Abbey Lincoln, Joanne Brackeen, Jay McShann, Ralph Peterson, Ed Thigpen, J.J. Johnson, Toots Thielemans, the Olympia Brass Band, Stevie Wonder, Bill Lee, Ray Brown, Poncho Sanchez, Dr. Billy Taylor, Dr. John, Lionel Loueke, Jeff Watts, and many others. Scarecrow Press published his autobiography, Contemporary Cat. By April of 2007, the Monk Institute announced its Commitment to New Orleans initiative, which included the relocation of the program to the campus of Loyola University in New Orleans, spearheaded by Blanchard. During 2007, the Monterey Jazz Festival named Blanchard Artist-in-Residence, and the festival formed a 50th Anniversary All-Stars ensemble featuring trumpeter James Moody, Benny Green, Derrick Hodge, Kendrick Scott, and Nnenna Freelon. In 2008, Blanchard helped scored the hit film Cadillac Records. Signing with Concord Jazz in 2009, he released Choices -- recorded at the Ogden Museum of Art in Blanchard's hometown of New Orleans -- at the end of that summer. In 2011, he paid tribute to the innovative Afro-Cuban recordings of Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo by teaming up with Latin jazz percussionist Poncho Sanchez for the studio album Chano y Dizzy! In 2012, Blanchard returned to his film work by scoring the soundtrack to director George Lucas' WWII action/drama Red Tails.“I’ve always believed that in life, what you keep in your mind is what you draw to yourself.” That’s how trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchardexplains the title of his 20th album, Magnetic, which finds a stunning variety of sounds and styles pulled together by the irresistible force of Blanchard’s vision. That credo stems directly from Blanchard’s personal faith; raised in the Christian church, he has turned in recent years to Buddhism after meditating with Herbie Hancock while on the road with the legendary pianist. The idea of a spiritual magnetism “is a basic concept in any type of religion,” he says. “Both Christianity and Buddhism have forms of meditation - one’s called prayer and one’s called chanting. But it’s all about drawing on those things to help you attain enlightenment in your life at the same time that you’re trying to give back to the community.”Magnetic gives expression to that belief through the combined voices of Blanchard’s always-scintillating quintet. Its latest incarnation brings together longtime members Brice Winston (saxophone) and Kendrick Scott (drums) with pianist Fabian Almazan, who made his debut with the group on its 2009 album Choices, and its newest member, 21-year-old bass prodigy Joshua Crumbly. In addition, they’re joined by a trio of remarkable special guests: master bassist Ron Carter, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, and guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke. The vast array of approaches undertaken by that ensemble is striking, from the blistering bop of “Don’t Run” to the fragile ballad “Jacob’s Ladder;” the psychedelic electronic haze of “Hallucinations” to the urgent edginess of “Another Step.” As Blanchard says, “It’s a wide range of musical ideas that come together through the efforts of the guys in the band.”Magnetic marks Blanchard’s return to Blue Note Records, which last released A Tale of God’s Will, his triumphant 2007 requiem for his home city, New Orleans, in the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. That harrowingly emotional song cycle is just one of many large-scale projects Blanchard has undertaken in recent years. Since first writing music for Spike Lee’s 1990 jazz-set movie Mo’ Better Blues, Blanchard has become a renowned film composer with over 50 scores to his credit, most recently the WWII drama Red Tails for producer George Lucas. This summer, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Jazz St. Louis will combine forces to premiere Blanchard’s first opera, Champion, an “Opera in Jazz” based on the story of the gay boxing champion Emile Griffith. This follows his recent score for Emily Mann’s Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. After the broad scope of such lofty undertakings, returning to a small group setting can be a challenge. “You get accustomed to having so many different colors at your disposal,” he says. “So I try to figure out a way to have as much diversity in everything that we play, the same expansive color palette as when you have an orchestra and voices.”One way that Blanchard expands his palette on Magnetic is through the use of electronics, creating an overdriven, electric guitar-like sound for his horn during “Pet Step Sitter’s Theme Song” or brewing the mind-altering atmospherics of “Hallucinations.” The latter tune, though titled by Blanchard’s 14-year-old daughter, also touches on the lifelong spiritual search evoked by the album-opening title track and “Central Focus,” which was originally recorded twenty years ago on Blanchard’s album Simply Stated. “When chanting for meditation,” he says, “you can have those moments of reflection that will bring new ideas to you. Some people may not call them hallucinations, but I think they’re all related in some fashion.”Not every tune comes from such profound motives. The hard-bopping “Don’t Run” was written solely with the intention of allowing the band to joust with Ravi Coltrane’s soprano and Ron Carter’s mighty bass runs. The title was inspired by a taunt from Carter to Blanchard, asking only half-jokingly when the trumpeter would call on the legendary bassist’s services. “Stop running from me, man,” Blanchard recalls him saying, and when Carter speaks, you listen.Coltrane’s contributions, which also include a taut, powerhouse turn on tenor for “Pet Step Sitter’s Theme Song,” came about simply because Blanchard was blown away by the saxophonist’s latest album, Spirit Fiction. “Ravi has developed a style and a sound that’s very unique,” Blanchard explains. “It’s an incredible feat given who his father was and what instrument his father played. But his being on my record has nothing to do with any of that; his being on my record is simply due to the fact that I love the way he plays.”The same goes for Benin-born Lionel Loueke, who first came to prominence through Blanchard’s quintet before becoming widely renowned as one of the most innovative guitarists and vocalists in modern jazz. “He’s a very unique talent,” Blanchard says. “Lionel always brings a certain spirit and energy to any project that he’s a part of.”Blanchard also readily sings the praises of his core group, which has been evolving over two years together to reach the deeply attuned point at which Magnetic finds them. “I’ve always appreciated the artistry of Brice and Kendrick,” he says of the band’s two veterans. “They’ve very seriously committed to developing their own unique styles of playing.”Of newcomer Crumbly, he says, “Josh is a young guy who’s very talented and brings a lot to the group.” And of Almazan, he continues, “Fabian has been growing by leaps and bounds. His harmonic knowledge has taken the band in interesting directions and he colors things in ways that I think are very fresh and forward-thinking.”So enamored is the bandleader of Almazan’s talents that he affords the pianist a solo spotlight, the captivating “Comet.” Almazan, Blanchard says, “plays with such grace and beauty. We did five or six takes and all of them were so beautiful that it was a hard to choose just one.”Each member of the group provides their own contributions to the album: Crumbly, the lovely and delicate “Jacob’s Ladder;” Scott, the forceful, rhythmically intense “No Borders Just Horizons;” Winston the lithe and intricate “Time To Spare;” and Almazan an “emotional roller coaster” dedicated to his mother, “Pet Step Sitters Theme Song,” which is later reprised as “Another Step.” “We had so much fun playing that tune that we just couldn’t leave it,” Blanchard explains. I thought it showed the diverse nature of the group, when you see the directions that it goes into, totally different from the first take.”In his role as mentor to his younger bandmates, Blanchard takes the mantle from his own onetime mentor, Art Blakey. Stressing the importance for young musicians to compose as well as improvise, Blanchard recalls the legendary drummer’s advice: “Art Blakey told us that composition was the path to finding your own voice. If you improvise, you don’t sit down and reflect coldly on what it is you’re playing because you’re moving so quickly onto the next thing. Whereas when you compose, you have to sit down and really contemplate what each note means and how you get from one to the next. That in itself will create a style.”Terence Blanchard’s own style continues to evolve and expand in exciting and compelling fashion. Magnetic is sure to capture listeners with an attractive power nearly impossible to resist. To Visit Terence Blanchard's website CLICK HERE
