This week's All One Song guest is the definition of a multi-hyphenate — your friend and ours, Jesse Jarnow. Jesse is an incredible writer, having penned such essential books as Big Day Coming: Yo La Tengo and the Rise of Indie Rock, Heads: A Biography of Psychedelic America,  Wasn't That a Time: The Weavers, the Blacklist, and the Battle for the American Soul, and the forthcoming epic, The Invisible Hit Parade: A People's History of Recorded Music. You're probably going to recognize Jesse's voice. He's a longtime DJ over at WFMU, the world's greatest free-form independent radio station, hosting the Frow Show every Tuesday night, bringing strange and wonderful sounds to the masses. He's also a podcaster, writing and co-producing the amazing Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast, which recently kicked off its 12th season. The Deadcast's depth of research, insight and sweet vibes puts pretty much every other podcast to shame—including this one. Finally, Jesse is one-third of Sloppy Heads, a long-running Brooklyn-based band with two excellent albums, Useless Smile and Sometimes Just One Second under their belt. Now that we've gotten Jesse's bona fides out of the way … which Neil Young song did he select to talk about with us on All One Song? Well, Jesse dug way down in the rust bucket for “Sedan Delivery,” a raucous number that first appeared on the classic 1979 Crazy Horse LP Rust Never Sleeps.  “Sedan Delivery”'s history stretches back several years, though — Neil and the Horse first tried it out during the Zuma sessions in 1975, giving it a somewhat lumbering lope. You can hear that version these days on Chrome Dreams. But with the subsequent dawning of punk, Neil and the crew injected this weird, semi-sci-fi with a dose of pure, demonic energy. Though it was hard to find in setlists for a little while there, by the mid-'90s, it became a mainstay in Crazy Horse's live repertoire, giving the band a chance to gleefully drive 90 miles an hour down a dead-end street. For borrowers who are unemployed or experiencing hardship, this is a significant loss. The end of pandemic-era protections, including deferments, has left many unprepared and falling behind.Adding to the challenge, federal collections resumed on May 5, signaling a firm end to COVID-19 relief. More than that though, they're a sentient infection utterly antithetical to our existence, for which we are woefully unprepared, which makes them the perfect monster to explore today, half a century on from their debut. "I adore The Seeds of Doom - not just for its B-movie brilliance, but for the creeping feeling it evokes that this time, for the first time, the Doctor really might lose. I've done one before actually, in Mark Gatiss's TV episode Sleep No More. It's a nice thing to play, because it's a very conflicted part." "The best monsters work on a really visceral, almost childlike level. The Krynoids are like that. You can take the interest if you want to at the end of the term and do what you want with your money. MYGAs are basically the annuity industry's version of a CD.  Treasury bonds are a no-brainer. Go to treasurydirect.gov to buy them for yourself. The only downside of treasury bonds is that there's a limitation on how much money you can put in it.  Of these three safe principal protection options, treasury bonds are the safest because the government can tax or confiscate money in order to pay it, and they will. The second safest one is CDs since they are government-based as well.  MYGAs are safe products to invest in, and their safety is based on the annuity company's ability to pay. They are commodity products, and the money you'll get from them can be used to buy another MYGA from another company. Keep Driving, developed and published by YCJY Games, is a management RPG with turn-based combat, and the thickest of vibes. You play as a young person, heading out onto the open road in your trusty car, traveling across the country to meet your friend at a music festival. Along the way, you encounter every facet of life: the good, the bad, and the surprising. You can pick up hitchhikers, take on odd jobs, refill at gas stations, and explore both small roadside towns and big cities. But along the way you have to face off against all manner of road events. Welcome back to All One Song, a Neil Young podcast presented by Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. This week is going to be slightly different. This week, we're talking about a song that was not written by Neil Young. Nevertheless, it's a song that is very much a part of the Shakey multiverse: Danny Whitten's “I Don't Want To Talk About It,” which appeared on Crazy Horse's debut LP in 1970. Danny Whitten, of course, was one of Neil's key collaborators and musical soul mates before his untimely death in late 1972. A little while later that decade, Rod Stewart took “I Don't Want To Talk About It” to the top of the charts. But it's Whitten's version that remains definitive. Here to guide us through the impossibly lonesome landscapes of “I Don't Want To Talk About It” is singer-songwriter Rosali Middleman—or just Rosali if you prefer. She's been a longtime fixture over at Aquarium Drunkard. But even though we've loved pretty much everything she's done, she somehow seems to get better with each new album. Her latest release, Bite Down on Merge Records, may well be her best effort yet. And that's saying something! It's packed with exceptionally well-crafted songs that feel as if you've known them your whole life. An instant classic, as they say.   Bite Down is Rosali's second album with the Omaha-based Mowed Sound, which features David Nance, James Schroeder and Kevin Donahue. This week, Pearl E. Gates (aka Pearl Harbour) from Bay Area new wave faves Pearl Harbor & The Explosions gives us a glimpse of some of the artists of the era who had the biggest impact on her. Along the way, Pearl shares her fascinating story: a military brat growing up in Germany who makes her way to San Francisco with a plane ticket and $75, joins The Tubes as a backup singer and dancer, which led to joining Leila and the Snakes before spinning off to form Pearl Harbor & The Explosions. After the moderate success of their single "Drivin'" for indie label 415 Records, the band was signed to Warner Bros. Records for their self-titled debut album, released in January 1980. It's a dynamic record that mixes new wave energy with pop, R&B, rockabilly, and jazz. They shared stages with the likes of Talking Heads, The Police, The Clash, and The B-52's. Differences in opinion regarding the Explosions' musical direction led to Pearl departing for England, where she recorded her rootsy, rockin' 1980 solo album Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Too, with a dream band including Wilko Johnson from Dr. Feelgood and members of the Blockheads and the Clash. In fact, in the '80s, Pearl was married to Clash bassist Paul Simonon. She also takes us through her rare mid-'80s album that never saw a U.S. release (Pearls Galore), her blazing '90s set Here Comes Trouble, and how her countrified return was sidelined by a lung cancer diagnosis. Now thankfully in remission, we are blessed to have this living icon of new wave history share her story. Oh, and in a head-turning twist, Uncle Gregg tackles the one question that nobody else has dared to ask!
