Welcome back to All One Song, A Neil Young Podcast presented by Aquarium Drunkard. We're spending the summer talking to a few of our favorite artists and writers about their favorite Neil Young song. This week, we've got someone very special: Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth. Steve spent about 25 years behind the drum kit for Sonic Youth as the band radically redefined and reimagined rock and roll. He's easily one of the greatest drummers of the past four decades, as heard on such classics as Sister, Daydream Nation, Washing Machine, Murray Street, and beyond. His style is explosive, sensitive and always imaginative. Steve is so much fun to listen to, in pretty much any context.   Since Sonic Youth called it quits, Steve has kept incredibly busy, not only managing the ever-expanding SY archives, but also playing with his former bandmates Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, Can vocalist Malcolm Mooney, Bush Tetras, Tape Hiss and the forthcoming Orcutt / Shelley / Miller LP coming out on Silver Current Records later this year. We've heard this one already and it is absolutely fantastic. Steve also currently is handling drumming duties for the killer Winged Wheel. For those of you seeing Neil at Bethel Woods in upstate New York on August 24 this year, be sure to get there a little early. Winged Wheel will be warming things up on a separate stage, which is sure to be amazing. Now, the topic has already come up in previous episodes — Sonic Youth's early 1991 tour with Neil Young & Crazy Horse, which saw both bands bringing their ear-shredding, feedback-laced sound to arenas across North America. Steve goes deep into that never-to-be-repeated moment in time plenty over the course of our discussion. But we also talk plenty about Steve's All One Song selection, "Vampire Blues." A song that just so happens to have inspired the name of Steve's record label, too. "Vampire Blues" was released in the summer of 1974 on the classic Ditch LP On The Beach. A seedy, bluesy shuffle, it seems to be sung from the point of view of an oil tycoon of some sort; though it doesn't really sound like it at first, this is one of Neil's ecological songs. He barely ever played it live at first, but he's revived it in the past decade or so; it showed up most recently in solo electric guise on the Coastal soundtrack. Tim Berners-Lee uploaded a photo of parody doo-wop group Les Horrible Cernettes on 18th July 1992 - the first image to be shared online. The photograph was taken at the CERN Hardronic Festival by Silvano de Gennaro, an analyst in the Computer Science department. The girlband were striking a pose for their forthcoming CD cover, little realising their comedy love songs about colliders, quarks, liquid nitrogen, microwaves, and antimatter would soon go down in internet history. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider the spooky social media resonance of this earliest online picture; explain how Berners-Lee used ‘sex' to ‘sell' the world wide web; and check out the Cernette's biggest banger, ‘Collider'... Again email follow@bestcelticmusic Last month, I led my Celtic Invasion of County Wexford. We visited the National 1798 Irish Rebellion Museum. I learned a lot. In the summer of 1798, in the town of Enniscorthy, a spark was lit that echoed across the centuries. Inspired by the ideals of liberty and self - determination that fueled the American and French Revolutions, ordinary Irish men and women rose up against British rule—hoping to shape a freer, more equal Ireland. The United Irishmen, a movement of Protestants and Catholics alike, dreamed of unity. But their rebellion was met with brutal force. The most haunting chapter came to a head on Vinegar Hill, where rebels made their last stand. Though the 1798 Rebellion was crushed, the spirit behind it lived on. It became a quiet current beneath Irish history, resurfacing again in 1916 during the Easter Rising—and carrying through to modern Ireland. Today's episode features songs and tunes inspired by the 1798 rebellion. These are songs of hope, defiance, heartbreak, and memory. This episode is not about blame. They're about telling the stories of those who dared to dream of freedom. GET AN IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC PODCAST ALBUM PIN Want to wear your love of Celtic music? Trouble? We eat trouble for breakfast! In Romans 12:12 we see three atmospheres, requiring three different attitudes from us. Trouble, or affliction, is just one of those atmospheres. No one likes difficulties, but they will come. The good news is that we can make our problems serve us. Jim will explain, and he'll walk us through the "Hope" and "Prayer" elements of this verse, as well. From touring rapper to barbershop owner, Mike Shelton's journey exemplifies the unpredictable path of entrepreneurship and the power of following your calling. When life threw him a curveball at age 34, learning that new cars wouldn't even have CD players for his music, he found himself at a crossroads. A moment of clarity on Highway 485 in Charlotte pointed him toward barber school, despite having a wife, young son, and mortgage to support. What unfolds is a remarkable story of faith and determination. Mike shares how he went from being the only white student at the all-Black owned No Grease Barber School to opening Uptown Barber Lounge in Bentonville. Starting in the back of a house and eventually growing to an 11-chair operation, his business philosophy challenges conventional thinking about competition."There's more people to cut than we can handle," Mike explains, rejecting the scarcity mindset that often pits similar businesses against each other. Instead, he embraces collaboration and community-building, recognizing that when an industry thrives, everyone within it benefits. This refreshing perspective resonates throughout the conversation as he describes the barbershop as much more than a place for haircuts. It's a sanctuary where authentic connections happen. The emotional depth of Mike's experience shines through as he recounts praying with clients, crying with grown men, and building relationships across social divides. "A barbershop will give you the pulse of what a community is like," he observes, highlighting how these spaces create neutral ground where CEOs and hourly workers become equals for 40 minutes in the chair.Whether you're contemplating a career change, running a small business, or simply appreciate authentic storytelling, Mike's journey offers wisdom about following your passion and serving others along the way. His story reminds us that sometimes the most fulfilling path emerges when you're willing to listen to that surprising inner voice telling you to try something completely new.Visit Uptown Barber Lounge at 502 Southwest 12th Street in Bentonville or check out uptownbarberlounge.com to experience this unique community hub for yourself.

Welcome back to All One Song, A Neil Young Podcast presented by Aquarium Drunkard. We're spending the summer talking to a few of our favorite artists and writers about their favorite Neil Young song.  This week, you're getting two fantastic guests for the price of one: Meg Baird and Charlie Saufley. Meg first came to my attention thanks to her work with the innovative Philadelphia psych-folk collective Espers, and since then she's created a pretty much flawless solo career — her most recent record, 2023's Furling, is a perfect showcase for her pristine guitar work and beautiful vocals. Charlie Saufley co-produced that record with Meg and the duo also played in Heron Oblivion with Ethan Miller and Noel Von Harmonson — a group that only managed one studio record during their existence, but that's ok. That one studio record was awesome. Charley also played in the Bay Area psychedelic rock group Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound; he's a killer guitarist, and — like Meg — is a serious Neil head. That last fact should be apparent in the tune Meg and Charlie selected for their All One Song appearance: “Interstate.” This brilliantly moody number is a strong candidate for the best Neil Young song that barely anyone knows about. Though you probably know about it if you're here. Neil debuted “Interstate” onstage in 1985 with the International Harvesters. But like so many of his strongest songs during that era, it was set aside for reasons that only Shakey can fathom. A few years later, producer David Briggs convinced him to cut the song with Crazy Horse during the Ragged Glory sessions. It's an incredibly haunting performance, with skeletal acoustic guitars and high, lonesome Horse harmonies. But Neil still wasn't feeling it —we guess “Farmer John” needed to be heard! Finally in 1996, that Ragged Glory performance was released on the Big Time CD single and as a vinyl only bonus track on Broken Arrow. These days, you can get it on the recent “Smell The Horse” edition of Ragged Glory. So yeah, it's a long, twisted story, as is the case with a lot of things in the Neil Young world. But “Interstate” deserves a place in the pantheon of Neil classics, regardless of its relative obscurity. It's this kind of song that turns a casual fan into, well, an obsessive, promising that there's always more buried treasure lurking in the Shakey archives. The thing about serving the Lord is, there are no days off! The difference between the sacred and the secular in the Christian's life is exactly zero. "Do all to the glory of God," Paul would write to the Corinthians. In his letter to the Romans, he talks about what that feels like from the inside. It feels like something bubbling over. Are we "fervent" - hot, boiling, heated by the flame of the Spirit? Here's the conclusion of Jim's sermon, Too Hot to Handle. They even admit to a couple of near-misses, including passing on a song that ended up becoming a massive hit for another artist. They also go deep on the real impact of love songs, how tracks like “Promise” and “Let's Get Married” helped shape a generation, and reveal some of the personal stories behind the music. Things get even more interesting when the F** It Bucket* comes out, sparking hilarious debates about ghosting, the art of the compliment, and the unexpected wisdom in a woman who “don't gotta take all her clothes off.”Whether it's the origin of their group name, behind-the-scenes So So Def moments, or their favorite small cities to perform in, this episode is packed with soulful memories, industry game, and classic Jagged Edge energy. Don't be a sloth! Romans 12, verse 11 gives us three directives (one "don't" and two "do's"). They have to do with our outer work ethic, our inner state of excitement in the Spirit, and the purpose of it all: to "serve the Lord." A Christian working with diligence will certainly stand out next to someone advocating a 4-day work week and free paid everything, serving only his own comfort. On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we share Jas Obrecht's world debut of one of Edward Van Halen's happiest, most memorable interviews. On that special morning — May 20, 1991 — Edward was on top of the world. He was celebrating the birth of his son, Wolfgang… his relationship with Valerie was strong… and he had just finished mixing For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Van Halen's first album in three years. The interview took place in the control room of Edward's expansive 5150 home studio. The console was a perfect snapshot of his world — cigarettes, tools, bottlecaps, a bowl of guitar slides, and Motley Crüe and Led Zeppelin CDs scattered around. “Before we do the interview,” Edward said, “I want you to hear the new album.” He cued up an advance CD of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, showed Jas the volume slider, and with a grin, said, “Hope ya like it,” before walking out the door. When the album finished, Edward returned, flipped a switch, and lit up two massive rooms behind the control room window — one filled with his guitars and amps, the other with Alex's drum setup. Right then, Jas and Edward launched into the wide-ranging interview you're about to hear. https://youtu.be/pG7e5crFnpE?si=R8MfBwPC_X8JNMQL Listening back after 34 years, Jas was struck by how joyful, relaxed, and full of life Edward sounded. This is the Edward Jas will always remember — and now you'll get to hear him that way too. The black-and-white photo of Edward is by Jon Sievert. Portions of this interview appeared in Guitar Player magazine's August 1991 issue. If you're into hard rock and heavy metal guitar, check out Jas's Talking Guitar interviews with Edward — plus conversations with legends like Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker, Joe Satriani, Vivian Campbell, and Ratt's Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby. Are Spotify and YouTube poisoning podcasting?I keep hearing how "What used to work in the past - doesn't work anymore? Well I disagree. Making great content that resonates with your audience has been around since the early days of radio, and if it make them FEEL something, you've got something that is golden. Giant companies always put profit over people, and with the latest AI band called the Velvet Sundown which has six figure streams. Why are AI Bands better than real musicians? They don't get sickThey don't complain about not getting paidThey can provide more music, more frequentlySo if the world starts to accept AI artists, if you're Spotify, why wouldn't you introduce an AI podcaster to deliver an evergreen topic? Spotify could promote it to make it popular and then run advertising against it and not have to worry about splitting the revenue with a podcaster. Both YouTube and Spotify entice you in with free services, and then once you grow dependent on them, they can do whatever they want and you don't have a lot of control. If you say the wrong thing, you're kicked off the platform. Rosanne Barr (who is Jewish) for saying something deemed hate speech about Jewish people while she is herself Jewish. It was Sarcasm. Rosanne started her career as a comedian. Big Companies Often Put Profit Over Doing the Right ThingPurdue Pharma has been accused of mislabeling opioids that lead to lots of overdoses. Johnson and Johnson faced lawsuits about cancer and talcum power. Wells Fargo was fined millions for having employees open millions of account without the customer consent. I could go on and assemble a very long list. Just keep your eyes open, and watch as these companies that have come into podcasting with free offerings to interrupt the space, take control and bend it to suit their needs (not those of the host or the listener).Sponsor Magnet Book ReviewThe Ultimate Book on Sponsorships/Partnerships, "Sponsor Magnet: How to Attract, Price, & Execute Your Dream Brand Partnerships" by Jusin Moore. It is THE book for those looking to create partnerships with brand (not just a one time payment). he book shows you how to find out who to talk to, what to say, how to say it, and to overdeliver to they keep sponsoring the show. The audio book has bonus content that was very cool as you hear people talking about putting the strategies into practice. You can get it on Audible if you're more of a listener than reader.Takeaways: If you're hunting for sponsors, check out the book 'Sponsor Magnet' - it's a game changer. Podcasts don't need to follow trends; old-school content is still valuable and effective. Big corporations could ruin podcasting, so let's just not invite them to the party. YouTube is saying things that make no sense. A CD is not a cassette. Spotify seems to have issue always delivering all the facts about their activities.Hashtags no longer carry any clout on instagram per Brock JohnsonA podcast is audio, video or pdf delivered via RSSPodcasting existed before people put in advertisements, and it will exist if advertising goes away.
