No one says, "One day, I'd really like to be an addict." Whether it's drugs or food or sex or entertainment, we can be enslaved gradually, then suddenly. Our word "addiction" comes from a Latin word that means, "to deliver up, to devote, to sacrifice." So if we don't want to be the sacrifice, we won't sacrifice our time and treasure to idols - demons. Today we'll hear Jim's closing remarks on 1 Corinthians 10. When schools respond to “behavior problems” in students, the focus is often on the symptom, not the cause. Failing to look beyond the surface behavior does a disservice to students, which is why in this episode I share commentary and a clip from my conversation with Dr. Shameka Stewart on the school-to-confinement pipeline. Dr. Shameka Stewart is an Associate Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Juvenile Forensic Speech-Language Pathologist(r). Dr. Stewart is also a special education advocate trained by the Wright's Law training center. Dr. Stewart's clinical and scholarly work specializes in Juvenile Forensics, Law Enforcement Interaction with youth with CD, child language disorders, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Her primary research focuses on the Confluence and Impact of cognitive and communication disorders on the school-to-confinement pipeline, status offenses, involvement with the criminal justice system, law enforcement interaction, and criminal recidivism in youth placed at-risk for delinquency and crime (especially Black and Brown youth from under-resourced areas). Dr. Stewart is also a clinically certified and licensed speech-language pathologist and is licensed to practice in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and multiple other states. Through her work, Dr. Stewart has created cutting edge social justice and juvenile justice specialty courses for graduate CSD students, nationally known training programs for law enforcement and legal counsel, and national and international CE workshops and training for licensed SLP clinicians, students, and families of children with special needs.Discussion points from this episode include: ✅The relationship between reading challenges and the school-to-confinement pipeline.✅Why “behavior problems” could be related to language processing, reading, or writing challenges.✅“They should know better”: Why we can't assume kids comprehend language in the school discipline handbook. If you're working with students in K-12 of any age, this episode is a must-listen. You can listen to the original interview with Dr. Stewart on the De Facto Leaders podcast here: EP 180: The relationship of literacy and language skills and involvement with the justice system (with Dr. Shameka Stewart) Link here: https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-180-the-relationship-of-literacy-and-language-skills-and-involvement-with-the-justice-system-with-dr-shameka-stewart/You can connect with Dr. Stewart on her website here: www.juvforensicslp.comConnect with her on Instagram @drjuvenile_forensicslp (link here: http://drjuvenile_forensicslp/)Join her Facebook group SLPs 4 Juvenile Justice here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1226771284165745/membersIn this episode, I mention Language Therapy Advance Foundations, my program that helps SLPs and other service providers create a system for language therapy. "You shall have no other gods before Me." We're supposed to believe that the biggest problem in the Old Testament - the most intractable sin, and the most abhorrent to God - has just vanished from the earth. If we do talk about idolatry, we might confine the discussion to the love of money - and boy, do we know some other people who need to hear that message! Today our study of 1 Corinthians will help us think more seriously about the rivals for our affection, and what's behind them. Did you know that at it's peak America On Line was responsible for 50% of all Compact Disc production in America? Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Simple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [No Bull RV Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here alongside Stephen Semple. And Stephen, you've got mail. Stephen Semple: That's right. Dave Young: You've got mail. You've got mail. Stephen Semple: Could you imagine? Could you imagine if it's still happened that way? You got mail. You got, you got, you got mail. Dave Young: It'd be all day long. I can remember in those early days when getting an email was like, oh, shit, I got an email. Or, somebody sent me an email, or they replied to one of mine. Oh my gosh. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: So AOL, that's the... There was a time. Stephen Semple: America Online. Dave Young: There was a time they'd send out their what? CD-ROMs. Stephen Semple: Yep. Dave Young: You couldn't reach into the seat back pocket of a car without finding one. Stephen Semple: And we're going to explore that whole marketing campaign. But here's the crazy thing- Dave Young: [inaudible 00:02:37] cereal. Stephen Semple: All of it. Yeah. At its peak, one half of CD production in the United States was dedicated to America Online. Dave Young: Oh my God. Stephen Semple: Isn't that crazy? Dave Young: Say it isn't so. Stephen Semple: I can't. AOL was founded by Steve Case, William Von, Jim Kimsey and Marc Seriff in 1983 in Brooklyn. And as we know, it went on to become one of the biggest names in the internet. And in January 11th, 2001, it merged with Time Warner being one of the largest corporate mergers at the time, which actually it turned out was a disaster, but we're not going to talk about that. But back in the early days in 1983, let's put it in perspective, because sometimes it's really hard to think about these technological evolutions, but in 1983, Sony released the first consumer camcorder CD-ROMs were developed. And the first cell phone, remember the Motorola one that looked like it was a World War II walkie-talkie? Dave Young: Well, before that were bag phones. My first one was a bag phone. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: The cell phone that you carried around with a giant battery in a bag. Stephen Semple: Exactly. Yeah. So that's like 1983. And AOL did not start as AOL. It started as a company called Control Video Corporation, CVC, founded by Bill Von Meister. And here's what they created. They created this thing called Gamelink, and basically it's a modem that plugs into the Atari 2600 game module, and they would sell the modem for 50 bucks, and it was a $15 setup fee, and you could download games for a dollar over the phone. That was the idea. This whole idea of the internet did not exist. It was this idea. Now, Steve Case, who becomes the main character in our story, worked for Bill and less than a year later, 1984, CVC is struggling because the video game boom has gone bust. Atari cancels the 2600 because only 3,000 units are sold. So the business is a bit of a tough space. Dave Young: This is a couple of decades almost before the boom, the bust? Stephen Semple: Yes. Oh, yeah. Dave Young: The bursting of the .com bubble. Stephen Semple: But this is the video game business goes through this a little bit, softening. The board sidelines, Von Meister and parachutes in Jim Kimsey, who's a former military guy,

How's your credit score? Is it in tip-top shape, or maybe it could use a little bit of love? The fact is that your credit score is one of the most important financial metrics we use today and how we manage and nurture it makes a huge difference in shaping your financial opportunities. By managing and improving it, you can secure better loan terms and lower interest rates, paving the way for a healthier financial future.   Links: Explore the identity protecting benefits of a Better Checking account Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports | Consumer Advice Check out TCU University for financial education tips and resources! Learn more about Triangle Credit Union   Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast.   A credit score might seem like a mysterious three-digit number, but it holds significant influence over your financial life. Whether you're applying for a loan or a credit card, renting an apartment, or even setting up utilities, your credit score plays a crucial role in the decisions that lenders, landlords, and service providers make. Your credit is a valuable asset, and credit score awareness can be a crucial piece in overall financial wellness and identity theft protection. In this tip, we want to remind account holders of the importance of understanding credit scores and provide some tips to help them improve and maintain a healthy credit score.   What Is a Credit Score?   Simply put, a credit score is like a grade for how good you are at managing money. It is one of the most important tools that lenders and financial institutions use to assess the risk of lending money to you. A higher credit score indicates a healthy credit history; therefore, a lower credit risk, making you more appealing to potential creditors. Credit scores typically range from 300 to 850, with higher scores being better, indicating that you have consistently made payments on time to satisfy your credit obligations. While a "good" credit score varies based on the lender and the specifics of the loan request, it is typically around 700 or higher. Once your score is over 760, you may expect to be offered the best available rates. Credit agencies refresh scores once a month, but the exact timing of those updates may vary based on a myriad of factors.  How Is a Credit Score Calculated?   You might be surprised to learn that you can have multiple different credit scores at the same time. Based on where the lender obtained their data (from one, two, or all three credit reporting agencies), the credit score model that is used, the lender's own criteria for issuing credit, and the timing of when the score was produced. A hypothetical scenario for calculating a credit score might weigh the following factors this way:  Payment History (35%): This is the most important part. It's like getting a gold star for paying bills on time. If you pay on time, your score goes up. If you miss payments, it goes down.  Credit Utilization (30%): Imagine you have a money jar, and you use only a little bit of it. That's good for your score. But if you use a lot of it, it's not so good. This measures how much of your available credit you're using.  Length of Credit History (15%): The longer you've had credit (like a credit card or loan), the better. It's like experience points. More experience means a higher score.  Credit Mix (10%): Having different types of credit, like credit cards and loans, can be like having a diverse team. It's good for your score, but you don't need to have them all.  New Credit (10%): Every time you apply for new credit, like a loan or a credit card, it can slightly lower your score. Too many applications at once can hurt your score.  Lenders will also look at other factors, such as your income, your assets, or how long you have been at your current job. Note that a high credit score isn't the only sign of financial health. An individual who chooses to use cash or debit cards for major purchases rather than taking out loans will likely have a lower credit score than someone with a long record of multiple well-managed debts, even though they may be very financially responsible.      Why Does Your Credit Score Matter?   Getting Credit: When you need to borrow money, like for a credit card or a car loan, lenders look at your credit score. If it's high, they're more likely to say yes. Plus, you might get lower interest rates, which means you pay less in the long run.  Interest Rates: A good credit score can mean lower interest rates on loans and credit cards. Lower interest rates save you money, so it's a win.  Renting a Home: Landlords often check your credit score when you apply to rent an apartment. A good score can help you get the place you want.  Utility Bills: Some companies might look at your credit score before deciding if you need to pay a deposit for things like electricity and water.  Job Opportunities: Some jobs, especially those handling money, check your credit as part of the hiring process. A good credit score can make you more attractive to employers.  For those interested, here are 9 Tips to Improve Your Credit Score  Pay Bills on Time: Make sure you pay your bills by their due dates. Set up reminders or automatic payments to help you stay on track. Manage Credit Cards Wisely: Keep your credit card balances low compared to your credit limits. Aim to use less than 30% of your available credit. Pay off your credit card bills in full whenever you can. Mix Different Types of Credit: Having different types of credit, like credit cards, loans, and mortgages, can boost your score. Only open new credit when you really need it. Don't Close Old Accounts: The longer you've had credit, the better. So, avoid closing old credit card accounts, especially if they have high credit limits. Deal with Problems: If you have late payments or debts in collections on your credit report, work on fixing them. Pay off debts in collections and ask creditors to remove them, if possible. Ask for a Credit Limit Increase: If you've been good at paying your credit card bills, consider asking for a higher credit limit. Having a higher credit limit could reduce your total credit utilization, which can help your credit score. Be Careful with New Credit Inquiries and Too Many New Accounts: Every time you apply for new credit, it leaves a mark on your credit report. Too many marks can hurt your score, so be careful about applying for credit often. Likewise, opening lots of new credit accounts in a short time can worry lenders and lower your score. Only open new accounts when you need them. Check Your Credit Report Regularly: Dispute any errors you find in writing to all three credit bureaus. You'll want to include the credit bureau's dispute form as well as any supporting documentation and be sure to keep copies of everything you send. You can find sample letters and more information about how to file a credit dispute in an article from the Federal Trade Commission (link will be in the show notes.)  Stay Alert for Signs of Identity Theft: All the work you do to improve your credit score could be thwarted by someone who has stolen your personal identifying information to take out loans in your name. Review your credit report and watch for any signs of identity theft to ensure your credit score is impacted by only your own financial behavior. If you find evidence of identity fraud in your credit report, remember, we can help. Members with a Triangle Better Checking account with IDProtect, have access to Identity Theft Resolution Advocates who are standing by to dispute fraudulent activity that might damage their credit standing.      Build a Credit Score Without Debt  Young adults and those who have never had a need for credit may not want to go into debt but want to build their credit score. Here are a couple of ways that you can build your credit score without debt.  Apply for a credit-builder loan, which places the money you borrow into a certificate of deposit (CD) or savings account that you can claim after making 12 monthly payments.   Apply for a secured credit card, which gives you a line of credit that is backed by a cash deposit.  Remember, with your Better Checking account, you are entitled to receive convenient access to your TransUnion® credit score monthly. Your score is tracked on a timeline to help identify unexpected changes in your score's movement that could indicate identity theft.  Plus, with a Better Checking account, you have access to your annual credit report. Chuck Marohn of Strong Towns joins me in the studio to dive deeply into the world of housing finance and housing policy, fresh on the heels of his book, Escaping the Housing Trap: The Strong Towns Response to the Housing Crisis. For an architect and engineer to dive into this world might seem anathema to economists, but we go there anyway. The topics range from the thirty year mortgage and its distortions on the housing market to yield curve control to how social trust impacts the whole conversation. And we ask “do we actually have enough housing?” Coming soon I'll have an episode about Leon Krier and his impact on so many discussions for architecture, planning and design today, but for now Chuck and I talk about one aspect of his ideas: height limits. Naturally, we focus on how that plays out in Washington, D.C.Find more content on The Messy City on Kevin's Substack page.Music notes: all songs by low standards, ca. 2010. Videos here. Record nerd Harry Portnof started Greenway Records, revived Reverb Appreciation Society, and now leads Levitation's label operations - today we discuss the elaborate vinyl variants and the clear passion for music the Levitation festival inspires. Topics Include: Harry Portnof runs Greenway Records, Levitation, and Reverberation Appreciation Society labels. Dad blasted southern rock and Allman Brothers at excessive volumes throughout childhood. Discovered dad's CD collection, dove deep into classic rock discographies. Taught himself guitar in high school after getting kicked off tennis team. Found grandmother's records in attic with broken turntable playing in mono. Mesmerized by grooves holding information, felt more futuristic than digital files. Got Project turntable in college, started seriously collecting vinyl records. College dorm had file sharing programs to download everyone's music collections. Became obsessed with seven-inch singles and exclusive B-side hunting on Discogs. Studied accounting, got CPA, worked Manhattan while spending money on records. Brooklyn DIY scene 2010-12: Death by Audio, Glasslands, 285 Kent venues thriving. Third Man Records inspired with collectible releases, impossible to get from New York. Playing in surf rock cover band The Midnight Snacks around Long Island. Started Greenway with friend Joey's pop punk band, 300 hand-screened seven-inches sold. Online forum of ten new labels supporting each other, Greenway only one remaining. Artist Dan Curran created lino cut covers for first thirty Greenway releases. Met LA Witch outside Music Hall, promised European tour records in two months. LA Witch success led to more touring bands wanting Greenway releases. Met Levitation founder Rob Fitzpatrick backstage at Desert Daze festival in California. Pandemic hit, launched Levitation Sessions producing concert films with thirty bands. Suddenly working with dream artists like Ty Segall and The Oh Sees. Levitation started as Austin Psych Fest in 2008, became major three-day festival. Flash flood disaster canceled festival one year despite bands and fans arriving. Austin's psych legacy rooted in 13th Floor Elevators and Rocky Erickson era. Levitation Sessions are filmed concerts; Live at Levitation are actual festival recordings. King Gizzard bootleg program allows labels to press their live shows freely. Learned vinyl manufacturing hands-on at New Jersey plant, experimenting with color pours. Most proud of Frankie and the Witch Fingers KEXP recording for Record Store Day. Market tightened post-pandemic, had to adjust pressing quantities and strategy accordingly. Creates regional variants for Australia, UK, EU retailers using Precision Record Pressing. We know about the gift of sex, but there's another gift, too! As we continue in 1 Corinthians, we find some powerful principles governing God's gift of intimacy between husband and wife. Oh, what a different world we would live in if those who name the name of Christ would trust Him in this area! But we've also forgotten what the Lord said about celibacy. Paul presents it as a higher gift, without denigrating marriage. Here's Pastor Jim to begin the message, Sacred Sex. Section 115 officially names the Church as "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" and emphasizes the importance of building a temple in Far West, Missouri. Section 116 identifies Adam-ondi-Ahman as a significant location for future events. Section 117 instructs Church leaders to prioritize spiritual matters over temporal concerns. Section 118 calls for the Twelve Apostles to serve missions abroad. Finally, Section 119 introduces the law of tithing as a way to support the Church and its members, and Section 120 establishes the Council on the Disposition of the Tithes to oversee the use of these sacred funds. The International group "The Salt Collective" are releasing the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2023 album debut, Life. Their second full-length release "A Brief History of Blindness" is a widescreen exploration of hope, memory, and resilience that features contributions from Aimee Mann, Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Andy Partridge (XTC), and Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) among others (writing credits and list of featured performers below). A Brief History of Blindness is being released on 12" LP vinyl, CD, digital download and streaming services by Propeller Sound Recordings November 21. While the Salt Collective's first outing was recorded remotely with many vocalists and instrumentalists working separately on multiple continents at different times, A Brief History of Blindness features the core musicians gathered in the same space interacting together in real time. The bulk of the music was laid down by Rob Ladd (The Connells) on drums, Gene Holder (The dB's) on bass, Stéphane Schück on guitars & sound design, Mitch Easter (Let's Active) on guitars, and Wes Lachot on organ, piano, and Nord. These full-band sessions took place at the Fidelitorium (Kernersville, NC), with other work at Studio Ferber (Paris), and various home studios. The album was produced by Chris Stamey and mastered by Dave McNair. The first single, "In the Shadow of the Moon," followed up by the groups second single "Cloud To Cloud."  Instagram.com/thesaltcollectivemusic  Facebook https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100036783560990 About Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris The Music Matters Podcast is hosted by Darrell Craig Harris, a globally published music journalist, professional musician, and Getty Images photographer. It's been 25 years since Pearl Jam made one of the most impactful decisions in their history. After years of rampant tape trading of bootlegged live shows within the community, the band took matters into their own hands by creating their own official bootleg series where nearly every one of their shows would be released via CD or digital download. Ever since the 2000 tour, fans have been able to purchase any available show to be able to relive all of the amazing moments that they've witnessed live. This would go on to impact the distribution of live music from that point on. For this episode, we bring in Patrick and Brian of our Hallucinogenic Recipe team to discuss the end of the taping era and how the releases would go on to impact the fandom. They'll select some of their favorite shows from the 2000 run and talk about buzzworthy performances that still remain powerful today. If you enjoyed this episode and would like to hear more stories just like these, this entire series is available on our Patreon at http://patreon.com/liveon4legs. “I didn't do stink finger until sophomore year…”   Switzerland is known for a few things with holes in them, most notably their cheese (and quite possibly their chocolate). But the biggest hole Switzerland is known for (other than CERN) is the seemingly endless void between the last CORONER studio album (“Grin” in 1993) and their upcoming 2025 release “Dissonance Theory”, which makes the gap between Tool albums look like a couple of weeks by comparison.    As one of the most technically progressive, avant-garde thrash bands in the entirety of Metal, CORONER are the kings of odd time signatures, unusual chord shapes, and mathematically challenging riffs that set them apart from the rest of the pack, and we're so glad they're finally back!   Often called “the Rush of thrash metal”, most likely due to the incredible depth, musical complexity, and texture of music that a 3-piece band of their stature can deliver, CORONER doesn't sound like anyone else in the thrash metal canon.    Discover the potentially dark traits shared by those with middle names who write in notebooks, understand the line of distinction between “a millionaire and a billionaire”, and find out why sex on Christmas Day ensures you'll be celebrating birthdays “on the same day as Russell” when you JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with the best roadies Celtic Frost ever had, featuring Switzerland's masters of techno thrash sorcery, CORONER. How tough was it to pick our "album bookends" this week (that is, albums that have a great first and last track)? You could say that's impossible, that's im-poss-i-ble. But, fortunately, we're everywhere that you are! We're un-alone for this discussion, because (if you couldn't have guessed) we have guitarist/singer/songwriter Steve Barton and drummer Dave Scheff from one of the best American bands of the '80s, Translator! Translator released four excellent albums for 415/Columbia: Heartbeats and Triggers (1982), No Time Like Now (1983), Translator (1985), and Evening of the Harvest (1986). At the end of their initial run, they played a final gig at the Farm in their home base of San Francisco. Captured on a cassette, nearly 40 years later, that incendiary live set is out for the first time on download, LP, or CD as Beyond Today: Live at the Farm San Francisco: 1986. from Liberation Hall. https://translatorlive.bandcamp.com As an added treat for fans, Beyond Today also contains two brand new Translator songs, "These Days to Come" and "With Your Dreams", both wonderfully mixed by Ed Stasium.
