Thomas Sowell is one of the thinkers I have recommended for years, particularly for his criticism of simplistic explanations for racial disparities. But I think one of the central arguments in Black Rednecks and White Liberals does not hold up as well as many conservatives assume.In this reaction, I respond to Hunter Matz's discussion of Sowell's thesis on the Joe Rogan Experience and examine the argument that Southern “redneck” culture was largely responsible for the cultural problems of black Americans.I look at the West Indies comparison, the distinction between Appalachian and Southern plantation culture, the influence of the planter class, the history of slavery and Reconstruction, Northern education, Booker T. Washington, the Great Society, and the cultural changes that followed.My argument is not that culture does not matter. Quite the opposite. Culture matters enormously. But history is complicated, and I do not think we can explain modern black American problems by simply pointing to Southern rednecks.As I say toward the end of the video, I have not argued that anything is in anyone's DNA or blamed one group of white people for everything. This "Deep Dive" series revisits a few of our past episodes on back-to-school challenges such as the morning rush, school projects which require lots of parental oversight, and how to help our kids navigate intensifying academic pressure. Whether it's the science fair, the pinewood derby, or a pre-K shoebox diorama, sooner or later every kid gets assigned a school project that is, without question, a PARENTS' project. What four-year-old can fashion her own “Dress As Your Patron Saint” costume? What sixth-grader can attempt proper MLA citation format without extreme maternal participation?  It's not so much the projects we mind— it's the feeling that however we handle it, we're doing it wrong. If we make the origami cranes for the kid, we're snowplow parents. If we send them in with a social studies project they made entirely themselves out of paper plates and crayons, we also own their cheek-burning shame when their projects pale in comparison to the professionally produced ones of their peers.  In this episode, we discuss how to discern the right amount of help such projects require: not too much, and not too little. Marianne Downing has a master's degree in Education (counseling) and began her career as a therapist before combining it with various roles within the nonprofit sector. She has been an entrepreneur since 2002. Since becoming a Latter-day Saint, Marianne served in the New Zealand Auckland mission, and as Relief Society president, counselor in her stake Primary presidency, stake Relief Society president, early morning Seminary teacher, and Young Women president. While living in Paris, France, she was called as part of a committee by the European Area Presidency to establish LDS Family Services in the French-speaking areas of France, Switzerland, and Belgium. She currently serves as a ward missionary. Alan Downing has a bachelor's degree in music from the Hartt School of Music. He sang professionally for ten years, including in synagogues and churches, while also working as an IT administrator with IBM, Verizon, and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. He left the corporate world to become a life coach and has created several men's retreats and trainings. He has led or staffed well over 100 experiential retreats in the United States, Europe, and South and Central America. After his conversion as a Latter-day Saint, he served in the France Toulouse Mission, and has served in callings including as a member of his stake high council, elders quorum counselor, Sunday School teacher, ward finance clerk, ward and stake executive secretary, and many positions related to music.
