Robert P. George is not a passive observer of the proverbial culture wars; he's been a very active participant. As a Catholic legal scholar and philosopher at Princeton University, he was an influential opponent of Roe v. Wade and same-sex marriage, receiving a Presidential medal from President George W. Bush. George decries the “decadence” of secular culture, and, in 2016, he co-wrote an op-ed declaring Donald Trump “manifestly unfit” to serve as President. Although George disagrees with the Administration's tactics to change universities' policies by punishment, he agrees with its contention that campuses have become hotbeds of leftism that stifle debate. He regards this not as a particular evil of the left but as “human nature”: “If conservatives had the kind of monopoly that liberals had,” George tells David Remnick, “I suspect we'd have the same situation, but just in reverse.” His recent book, “Seeking Truth and Speaking Truth: Law and Morality in Our Cultural Moment,” tries to chart a course back toward civil, functioning debate in a polarized society. “I encourage my students to take courses from people who disagree with me, like Cornel West and Peter Singer,” the latter of whom is a controversial philosopher of ethics. “Cornel and I teach together for this same reason. Peter invites his students to take my courses. That's the way it should be.”

Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour host Scot Bertram fills in for Jim on Friday's 3 Martini Lunch. Join Scot and Greg as they break down the end of taxpayer-funded subsidies for electric vehicles, Zohran Mamdani's push to dismantle gifted education, and trust in the news media falling to yet another all-time low.First, they welcome the expiration of $7,500 federal subsidies for electric vehicle buyers, which ended in September under the Republicans' One Big Beautiful Bill. The subsidies were paid for with your tax dollars. Automakers enjoyed a brief sales surge before the deadline but are now bracing for a steep drop in demand. Scot points out that despite Democrats' efforts to force us to accept EV's, most people just don't want one.Next, they groan as Democrat New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani vows to end gifted education from kindergarten through second grade. Scot and Greg explain how the left is obsessed with equity instead of excellence. So instead of pushing every student to be the best they can be, they hold back the higher-achieving students to create more equal outcomes. Finally, they review the latest Gallup poll showing only 28 percent of Americans have trust in the media, which is yet another record low. Scot gives one example from just the past few weeks to explain why that loss of trust is fully justified. They also explain how this gives other news sources to win that trust. They also note efforts by CBS and The Washington Post to bring in more voices and more perspectives to their news and opinion content. Please visit our great sponsors:Get 20% off your first purchase of classic menswear. 10 Financial Mistakes To Avoid

Financial blunders aren't new. Consider this: the web portal Excite once passed on buying Google for just $750,000. Today, Google's parent company is worth over $2 trillion. That, my friends, is a legendary missed opportunity. Most of us won't miss out on trillions, but we've all made financial mistakes. The good news is that God's Word offers wisdom for recovery and direction when we stumble.Learning from FailureScripture reminds us that falling isn't the end for those who walk with God:“For the righteous falls seven times and rises again” (Proverbs 24:16).“For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you” (Psalm 86:5).“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God … and it will be given him” (James 1:5).Failure can be a stepping stone when we let God guide us forward. With that encouragement, here are 10 financial mistakes to avoid—and biblical wisdom to help you course-correct.1. Borrowing from Your 401(k)It feels like “borrowing from yourself,” but it often masks overspending or debt. While repaying, you may miss out on employer matches and the compounding growth that comes with them. Worse, leaving your job could trigger taxes and penalties.2. Claiming Social Security Too EarlyStarting at 62, benefits are reduced by up to 30%—for life. If possible, wait until full retirement age (or beyond) for a larger monthly check that lasts as long as you do.3. Only Paying the Minimum on Credit CardsA $5,000 balance at 20% interest can take nearly a decade to pay off with minimum payments, costing more than $8,000 in interest. Pay extra and utilize debt payoff strategies, such as the snowball or avalanche method.4. Delaying Retirement SavingsCompound interest rewards the early saver. Even small contributions in your 20s can grow into a significant nest egg. Don't panic if you're starting late—just start now.5. Overextending Yourself for Your KidsHelping with college, weddings, or down payments shouldn't jeopardize your own financial stability. Generosity is good, but if you sacrifice retirement now, you may depend on your kids later.6. Going It Alone Without Wise CounselMany sell low during downturns because they lack guidance. Proverbs 15:22 says, “Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” Seek out wise, faith-based financial advice.7. Co-Signing a LoanScripture warns: “One who lacks sense gives a pledge and puts up security in the presence of his neighbor” (Proverbs 17:18). About 40% of co-signers end up paying the loan themselves. Be wise in your generosity.8. Quitting School Too SoonEducation—whether a four-year degree, trade school, or certification—equips you with marketable skills. Think of it as an investment in your future, not just a cost.9. Buying a TimeshareTimeshares are marketed as affordable luxury, but often come with steep fees, little flexibility, and low resale value. They're rarely the “investment” they claim to be.10. Falling for ScamsScammers prey on fear, urgency, and greed. Whether through fake calls, emails, or investment pitches, their goal is always the same—to separate you from your money. Be vigilant and discerning.Walking Forward in FreedomJesus warned His disciples: “I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16).Wise stewardship isn't about never failing—it's about learning, leaning on God's wisdom, and moving forward faithfully. With His help, you can recover from mistakes and grow into a more faithful steward of His resources.———————————————————————————————————————At FaithFi, we believe money is a tool to advance God's Kingdom. RIF'd State Department workers get confusing furlough messages; Education workers' automatic email replies changed to blame shutdown on Democrats

    The Daily Scoop Podcast

Former State Department employees whose roles were eliminated as part of a reduction-in-force still received information about whether they would be needed during the government shutdown — including some workers who were told their positions were “excepted.” While the full extent of the issue wasn't immediately clear, three such employees shared those notifications with FedScoop on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. Others were also aware of the problem even if they didn't receive the messages themselves. In response to a FedScoop request for comment, a State spokesperson indicated the department was aware of the issue and had taken steps to address it, confirming there were “minor” discrepancies with data, saying that the department immediately worked to resolve any outstanding issues. Of the three State Department notices reviewed by FedScoop, one informed the RIF'd employee that their position was “excepted” and explained that those roles are defined as those needed for emergencies that threaten life and property or are essential for national security. It then ordered that worker to “report to work on your next regularly scheduled workday.” The other two already RIF'd employees were told that they would be furloughed during the shutdown but that it was “in no way a value judgement on the work you do for the Department.” Those employees were also instructed to review their department emails for updates despite not being able to access that information. Of the three RIF'd employees, only one — a foreign service officer — is still on the department's payroll. As employees at the Education Department prepared for a looming government shutdown this week, several set an automatic email reply to inform others of their furloughed status. But by Thursday morning, some furloughed workers discovered that their automatic email replies had been altered, without their knowledge, to include a message blaming Democratic senators for the ongoing government shutdown. According to two furloughed Education Department employees, the agency sent workers suggested language to use for their out-of-office messages earlier this week, but the language was “neutral” regarding the shutdown. One of the employees, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told FedScoop they and other furloughed staff mostly cut and paste from the suggested language with little to no changes when setting their automatic replies. But when they checked their automatic email replies Thursday morning, the message changed and included partisan language mentioning Democrats, the employee said. The other furloughed worker said they set the generic text for their OOO email Wednesday morning and the message was changed by Wednesday night. Emily Kircher-Morris welcomes Dr. Jennifer Dall, a grief-informed neurodivergence specialist and the founder of ADHD Holistically. Jennifer was diagnosed with ADHD in her 50s, and is now an educator, administrator, coach, and grief specialist. They talk about grieving over what might have been, a struggle that often accompanies late-diagnosis. They discuss Jennifer's lived experience with late diagnosis, as well as some common misconceptions about ADHD, especially those faced by women. They also talk about the challenges of identifying ADHD in school settings, particularly for girls and students who may not present with typical disruptive behaviors, and how dependence on a behavioral lens can lead to greater consequences, rather than providing necessary support. TAKEAWAYS There's a lack of training about the diverse presentations of ADHD among educators and professionals. It's a persistent myth that people "grow out of" ADHD. There can be profound grief and trauma after a late diagnosis, stemming from lost time, opportunities, and years of internalizing negative narratives. ADHD often compounds the symptoms of grief. Dr. Jennifer Dall is a Grief-Informed Neurodivergence Specialist and the founder of ADHD Holistically, where she helps individuals—particularly women—navigate ADHD with practical, personalized strategies that prioritize self-awareness and sustainable growth. With over 25 years of experience as an educator and a background in ADHD coaching, yoga instruction, and grief education, her holistic approach is rooted in both professional expertise and lived experience. Diagnosed with ADHD in her 50s, Dr. Jennifer brings deep insight into the challenges of late diagnosis, masking, and misinformation—especially for women. Through her courses, workshops, and speaking engagements, she supports neurodivergent individuals and the professionals who serve them, including therapists, coaches, and HR leaders. Her work centers on reframing ADHD as a source of strength, helping others unlock their potential with strategies that work in real life. We wanted to take a macro approach and examine the current state of AI in education, its promise, the fears, and what the near future may look like. The Questions:Is AI in the classroom a force for good? Can we still produce critical thinkers in an AI-driven classroom? Will AI just be another ed tech flash in the pan?To have this conversation, we brought together two leading eduction experts with nuanced, divergent views on the roles technology, and AI specifically, should play for teachers and students.Eric Westendorf is a former principal who founded the ed tech company LearnZillion, and now is the co-CEO of Coursemojo, which is using AI to enhance in-class learning by supporting teachers in providing the right support for every student.Justin Reich is an Associate Professor in Comparative Media Studies and Director at MIT Teaching Systems Lab, and is the author of a new book, Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Can't Transform Education. Two notes on terms.
