Brandy Shufutinsky is the newly appointed Director of the Education and National Security Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. In this important conversation, we disciuss how today's ethnic studies curriculum, originally intended to promote understanding among diverse communities, is instead fueling division, promoting an oppressor-vs-oppressed worldview, and teaching students that capitalism is synonymous with white supremacy and exploitation. Brandy brings deep expertise to this topic, holding a doctorate in International and Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco, an MSW from USC, and an M.A. in International Relations from the University of San Diego. Today, at least 22 states mandate ethnic studies in K–12 education, 24 more have incorporated elements of it, and California has made it a graduation requirement. Yet there are no national standards for what's being taught, and no real education on the dangers of communism, the importance of civics, or an emphasis on nurturing diverse opinions and critical thinking. Brandy shares how you can get involved locally to push for rigorous standards, honest history, and an end to the ideological indoctrination in our classrooms. If we want to preserve a strong and free Republic, the way we educate the next generation must change. Quotable Moments: "The ideology holds that I'm suffering from internalized oppression because I'm not willingly categorizing myself as part of the oppressed class." "If you are, or simply appear to be white, you're automatically put in the oppressor category." "We cannot have the Republic we have today with an ill-informed, miseducated next generation." "It's easy to be a communist when you're living in a capitalist society." "We need to teach civics and the benefits of our system, but we also have to teach the dangers of the other." Remastered and featuring updated content, Raven reconnects with Holly Archer to discuss the heartbreaking cold case of Britney Tiger Gomez from Ada, Oklahoma. Originally recorded in 2020, the episode now includes new developments that came to light in 2023, leading to an arrest, though not the kind anyone had hoped for.The MMIW crisis refers to the staggering and disproportionate number of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit individuals who go missing or are murdered across the United States and Canada, often with little to no media coverage or resolution. Systemic failures, jurisdictional gaps, and historical trauma have left families searching for answers and justice. In Oklahoma—home to many tribal nations—the crisis is especially urgent, and cases like Britney Tiger's shine a light on just how much work still needs to be done.Anyone with tips on Britney's case can leave an anonymous tip with the FBI at tips.fbi.gov or leave us a tip on our website's homepage. Across the country, K-12 teachers are prepping classrooms, reviewing lesson plans, and bracing for another school year that, for some, feels politically and personally charged. The Department of Education is slowly being dismantled by the Trump administration. In some districts, immigration officials have shown up at schools, which likely contributed to a rise in student absences last spring. And artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping what both teaching and learning look like. We hear directly from educators and what's at the top of their minds as they head into the new school year. Susie hasn't been this happy since we found out Luigi Mangioni's name thanks to the Coldplay cheaters on the kiss cam. We discuss how it's not the crime, but the cover-up once again that got them into trouble. We debate which concerts are cheater concerts, whether it's ok to make fun of people like them who go viral, and what we think will happen to them now. We talk about the Amy Bradley Is Missing documentary, the insanity of cruise "law" and security, and what we think happened to this woman who disappeared mysteriously from a cruise ship. Sarah explains why young people need more "little treats" than previous generations, and for once Susie defends younger generations. Plus, we hear about the Gilgo Beach Long Island serial killer's family, why they can't accept that he killed people despite the overwhelming evidence pointing to him.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Get $10 off your first month's subscription and free shipping when you go to https://nutrafol.com and enter the promo code BRAINCANDYThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Do you work to live…or live to work? For many, the answer is simple: “I work to make a living.”But what if there's more to work than just earning a paycheck? Could it be that work holds deeper meaning—something essential to who we are and how we're made? David Bahnsen joins us today to offer a perspective on work you might not have considered.David Bahnsen is the Founder, Managing Partner, and Chief Investment Officer of The Bahnsen Group, a national private wealth management firm managing over $7 billion in client assets. He is a frequent guest on CNBC, Bloomberg, Fox News, and Fox Business. He is also the author of Full Time: Work and the Meaning of Life. Rethinking Work and IdentityWe live in a world that often tells us our identity has nothing to do with our work. Unfortunately, that idea has not only crept into culture but also into the church. But let's be honest: that's simply not true. Our identity is tied to our work—not in the sense that a job title defines us, but because we are made in the image of a working God.We all instinctively know this. We don't look at someone who is contributing meaningfully to society and compare them equally to someone who spends every day in idleness. That's not about transactional worth—it's about reflecting the nature of our Creator. God created us to be productive, useful, and active. That's not a controversial claim. It's Genesis 1. Work isn't all of who we are, but it is a vital part of who we were created to be.Too often, we treat faith like an add-on. We make decisions about money, career, education, even family, and then sprinkle a few Bible verses on top. But the goal isn't to balance faith and work—it's to integrate them. That begins by grounding our understanding of work in a creational theology: God made work good. What we need in the church is not more dichotomy between sacred and secular, but an integrated vision that sees every good job—yes, even spreadsheets, sales, and software—as part of God's design. This mindset shift must begin in our pulpits. Our congregations need to hear that their Monday through Friday labor is not second-tier spiritual activity. It is sacred. The Relationship Between Work and RestInstead of chasing a “work-life balance,” Scripture offers a “work-rest paradigm.” God modeled six days of work followed by one day of rest—not the other way around. The purpose of rest isn't to escape work; it's to be restored for more of it. Rest has meaning because work has meaning. That's why we push back on the cultural narrative that says rest, leisure, and early retirement are life's ultimate goals. While rest is essential, its purpose is to equip us to return to the good, God-glorifying work He's called us to do.Culture often treats retirement as the finish line—an end to productivity, as if people cease to offer value once they reach a certain age. But that view is deeply flawed. We must challenge the financial industry's narrative that the goal is to accumulate enough so that we never have to work again. That mindset undermines the dignity and purpose of work. Yes, physical limitations may alter what work looks like in later years, but wisdom, experience, and the capacity to contribute remain. Companies and churches alike lose something precious when they usher older workers out instead of tapping into their gifts.Job, Career, or Calling? So, how should we think about our work? Is it just a job? A stepping stone? Or something more?Every Christian, no matter their vocation, should view their work as a calling. That doesn't mean God gives us a divine word about every job transition, but it does mean that the act of producing goods and services, solving problems, and serving others is inherently meaningful. That's our calling: to work with excellence, for the good of others, and the glory of God.To young adults wondering what to do with their lives: Don't believe the lie that you need to find your dream job tomorrow. Instead, embrace the next opportunity in front of you with excellence, humility, and a long-term view.Work is not just a means to a paycheck. It's how we serve our neighbors, develop skills, build character, and participate in God's ongoing work in the world. Some jobs may be stepping stones—but every job matters. The key is to remember the why behind your work: it's about loving God and loving others. Here's the truth: work isn't something we do just to meet our needs. It's something we do because God made us to work. He worked in creation, and He continues to work in redemption. When we work, we join Him in that sacred task—creating, restoring, cultivating, and contributing to human flourishing. Our work builds families, economies, culture—and yes, even the Kingdom of God.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I recently retired and now work part-time delivering food for a restaurant using my personal vehicle. Am I allowed to deduct mileage, gas, or other vehicle expenses when I file my income taxes? My son is having a hard time covering his business expenses and has turned to several payday loans just to stay afloat. I'm looking for advice on how he can get sound financial guidance—or if there's a way he can consolidate that debt and get back on track.Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Full-Time: Work and the Meaning of Life by David L. This week’s guest is Renée Bryan, a Licensed Professional Counselor and educator with a Master's in Education from Mercer University and a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Richmont Graduate University. What makes Renée's work particularly compelling is her role as a mental health co-responder with law enforcement. This growing field many mental health professionals may not even know exists. In today's conversation, we explore what it's like to ride alongside police officers daily, responding to mental health crises in real-time. Renée takes us inside the day-to-day realities of co-response work, from gas station interventions to family crises, sharing the de-escalation strategies that work in the field and the safety protocols that protect both clinicians and community members. We discuss the challenges of navigating different professional languages between mental health and law enforcement, the current state of community mental health resources, and how this collaborative model is achieving a 98% diversion rate from incarceration to treatment. In this episode of All Things Wildfire, host OP Almaraz sits down with Brad Sawyer and Robert Clemmons of Marsh & McLennan Agency to unpack the growing urgency of wildfire resilience. Together, they explore practical home hardening strategies, the power of community collaboration, and the often-overlooked complexities of the insurance claims process after a wildfire. Listeners will gain insight into how homeowners can take proactive steps to reduce risk, better understand their insurance policies, and improve their chances of recovery post-disaster. The discussion wraps with a strong call to action—resilience isn't optional, it's essential. Show Notes Highlights: Wildfires as Wake-Up Calls: Recent wildfire events have highlighted the urgent need for communities to act before disaster strikes. Home Hardening Musts: Learn how features like ember-resistant vents, non-combustible materials, and defensible space can dramatically reduce wildfire risk. Insurance Gaps & Misconceptions: Many homeowners are unaware of what's actually covered—understanding your policy is critical. The Claims Process: Why documentation matters and how being unprepared can delay or reduce your claim. The Role of Community: Fire resilience goes beyond individual homes—neighborhoods that collaborate are safer. Preparedness is Prevention: Investing in wildfire prevention today means fewer losses tomorrow. Education is Lacking: Despite growing threats, awareness and understanding of wildfire preparedness remain low. Key Takeaways: Wildfires should be a trigger for action, not reaction. Home hardening and defensible space are foundational to fire resilience. Don't wait until disaster hits—document home contents now. Know your policy. Know your risk. Community-wide strategies are the future of wildfire prevention.

"For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7 "We must remember that the phenomenon of internal discipline is something which. This book serves as a companion to the second volume, The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old. Executive function is often defined as “having good time management skills”. While this isn't completely off-base, it's a vast oversimplification. The REASON people are good at time management is because they have the ability to estimate and sense the passage of time. Most “textbook” definitions of executive functioning don't fully call this out, and as a result many educators and clinicians have a difficult time figuring out how to design instruction and intervention that supports executive functioning. Instead of embedding support across the day, interventions get siloed in special education, or lumped into long lists of cookie cutter classroom accommodations that overwhelm general education teachers. Kids don't generalize skills from one setting to another, even though people think they're working on “time management”, and well-meaning adults find themselves giving constant “five minute warnings” as they try to help their students keep up with the pace of classroom activities or even basic functional tasks (e.g., getting things together, making transitions). Let's be honest: If “five minute warnings” were an effective method of teaching executive functioning and “time management”, we wouldn't have to be doing them constantly. What if there was a way to help kids develop these skills, so we could fade all the prompting? The good news is, there is. The first step is recognizing that the core skill we're teaching is TIME PERCEPTION. When you google a definition of executive functioning, you'll likely get a list of 8 or 9 skills. Things like attention, working memory, shifting, ideational fluency, and self-regulation. It's important for educators, clinicians, and school leaders to understand these terms and what they are, but then they need to organize these abstract cognitive skills into concrete skills that can be both taught explicitly and layered across a students' day. That's why the framework I teach organizes executive functioning into 5 areas: 1. Time perception2. Self-talk3. Future pacing4. Episodic memory5. Encoding. In this first episode of a 5-part podcast series, I discuss the first one: Time perception. In this episode, I'll reveal:✅ What “time perception” means in the context of executive functioning (beyond simply knowing how to tell time).✅ How time perception deficits interfere with task initiation, sustained attention, and task completion.✅ Why students may appear "defiant" or "unmotivated" when the real issue is inaccurate time estimation/perception.✅ How poor time perception creates barriers for following schedules, meeting deadlines, or pacing tasks appropriately.✅ Intervention principles to help build a student's internal sense of time as part of a larger EF support plan.In this episode, I mentioned my upcoming free live virtual training hosted by Parallel Learning that's coming up on August 14, 2025 from 6:30-8:00 PM EST. It's called “Executive Functioning: Beyond Checklists and Planners”. In this insightful conversation, host Susan Ryan sits down with senior living innovator Andy Carle, consultant and founder of UniversityRetirementCommunities.com. Andy shares his personal journey into eldercare and the bold moves he's made to elevate the field, from founding a 70-community company to creating the first university-level curriculum for senior living executives. Andy also dives into the concept of “nana technology”—his term for tech that supports aging with dignity—and explores the rise of University Retirement Communities (URCs), a model that merges lifelong learning with purposeful aging. He outlines the five essential criteria for certification and shares how URCs foster mutual benefit for both older adults and students through intergenerational connection, shared resources, and collaborative programming. This episode takes a deep dive into what's possible when we stop settling for outdated models and start designing for a future that values older adults as engaged, capable, and vital members of society. When Katharine Graham took over the Washington Post in 1963, she was a shy socialite who'd never run anything. By retirement, she'd taken down a president, ended the most violent strike in a generation, and built one of the best-performing companies in American history. Graham had no training, no experience, not even confidence. Just a newspaper bleeding money and a government that expected her to fall in line. When her editors brought her stolen classified documents, her lawyers begged her not to publish. They said it would destroy the company. She published them anyway. Nixon came after her, attacking her with the full force of the executive. Then Watergate. For nearly a year she was ridiculed and isolated while pursuing the story that would eventually bring down the president. Graham proved that you can grow into a job that initially seems impossible and no amount of training can substitute for having the right values and the courage to act on them.
