Since their first detection, powerful bursts of X-rays from distant galaxies, known as fast X-ray transients (FXTs), have mystified astronomers. FXTs have historically been elusive events, occurring at vast distances away from Earth and only lasting seconds to hours. Einstein Probe (EP), launched in 2024, is dedicated to observing transient events in the X-ray and is changing the game for astronomers looking to understand the origin of these exotic events. Quin Cho is an accomplished historian and author specializing in the history of global conflict and geopolitics in the Asia-Pacific region. A 2023 summa cum laude graduate of the University of Southern California, Quin earned a 4.0 GPA as a double major in History and International Relations. His academic excellence and rigorous training in archival research and historiography earned him the prestigious Outstanding Senior Award from USC's Phi Beta Kappa society, an honor bestowed upon only three students in his graduating class.Quin's debut book, Competing Empires in Burma: A Chronicle of the China Burma India Theater of World War II, achieved critical acclaim, ranking in the top 10 of Amazon's military regiments category and earning an average rating of 4.91 stars on Goodreads.Currently, he is authoring a multi-volume work on the Kwantung Army, exploring its role in the false flag attack on the South Manchuria Railway that precipitated Japan's conquest of Manchuria and set the stage for World War II in the Asia-Pacific.As a fellow at Pacific Atrocities Education since January 2024, Quin has made significant contributions to the organization's mission. Despite a three-month sabbatical to study Korean through the State Department's Critical Language Scholarship, he wrote 176 pages of his forthcoming book, which now totals approximately 427 pages. In March 2024, Quin conducted extensive archival research at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland, scanning thousands of pages of primary source documents. These materials enriched his book and expanded PAE's archival collection. Additionally, he completed a 40-page mini-book on the Battle of Wuhan, slated for release in early 2025.​Looking ahead, Quin's first volume on the Kwantung Army (150–200 pages) is scheduled for release in September 2025, coinciding with a commemorative event at the Officers Club in San Francisco marking the 80th anniversary of World War II's end. This strategic launch aims to amplify the book's reach, with subsequent volumes planned for future years. Her career has been committed to serving vulnerable populations and decreasing health disparities locally as well as globally. She founded the Stanford section in Social Emergency Medicine, a field which uses the perspective of the Emergency Department (ED) to identify patient social needs which contribute to disease and to develop solutions to decrease these health disparities. As such, she directed the Social Emergency Medicine fellowship and was medical director for a student-run group which screened ED patients for social needs (Stanford Health Advocates and Research in the ED (SHAR(ED)). She has worked clinically and educated trainees and faculty globally, including at sites in Chiapas, Mexico; Borneo Indonesia and Galapagos, Ecuador. Her current research and advocacy includes investigating disparities in specialty care access and quality, including trauma and mental health. Dr. Wang also works with community organizations to understand best models to provide wraparound social and medical services for unaccompanied immigrant children, for which she has received Stanford Impact Labs, Center for Innovation in Global Health and Office of Community Engagement grants. She presently serves as a medical expert with the Juvenile Care Monitoring team for the U.S. Federal Court overseeing the treatment of migrant children in U.S. detention. In 2023, she was appointed as the inaugural Faculty Director of the Health Equity Education MD/Masters Program at the Stanford School of Medicine. Secondary teachers want more support and more money as they get ready to strike again next week. The Post Primary Teachers' Association says its members voted overwhelmingly to reject an improved offer from the government. The strike is staggered, so each day until Thursday, they will refuse to teach or supervise a particular year level. But the Public Service Commission says the union is choosing strikes over students and should get back to the bargaining table. Tess Brunton reports.

Detecting the Often Undetectable One family's insight into ovarian and uterine cancer, finding support, cherishing family and making change through philanthropy. Diane Trounson-Chaiken, PsyD Diane was born and raised in Long Island City, NY and as a true New Yorker did all of her schooling in NYC. She received her BA in Psychology and Education from Barnard College, Columbia University in 1988 then traveled downtown to New York University where she received her MA and Doctor of Psychology in Child Clinical Psychology in 1994. For many years she worked in early intervention with developmentally delayed preschoolers and their families. She also taught psychology graduate courses to Masters and Doctoral students at several universities, most notably Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Diane met her husband Warren in 1989. They were married in 1993 and moved to the Philadelphia area in 1994. They have two sons, Ben (27 years) and Josh (23 years). Ben graduated from Colgate University in 2020 and lives in Manhattan. Josh graduated from Wake Forest University in 2024 and currently lives in Chicago. Spending time with her husband and sons is what Diane loves most in life. Whether traveling the world, a passion they all share, or sitting on the beach at the Jersey shore, it's all about being together. In April 2023, Diane was diagnosed with Stage 3B Clear Cell Ovarian Cancer & Stage 1 Uterine Cancer. She is treated at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, recognized as a nationally leading cancer center for both clinical care and research. After surgery and chemotherapy Diane achieved remission in October 2023. A year later in November 2024 she suffered a recurrence that resulted in surgery.  Again, this summer in June 2025 she had a more significant recurrence with several areas of metasteses. Diane is currently undergoing chemotherapy which will be followed by surgery and continued chemo. She has learned that this journey is not a sprint but much more of a marathon and is so grateful for the love and support of  her family and many dear friends.  Following are several organizations and programs the Chaiken family supports philanthropically.  -Fox Chase Cancer Center, Ovarian cancer research -Unite for Her, a national organization that provides free services and support for breast and ovarian cancer patients -We Are Wake, a campus wide program at Wake Forest University that supports students' mental health. -Her Health Compass -Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America  Warren Chaiken is a seasoned executive with over two decades of experience leading complex organizations and driving growth through strategic innovation, operational excellence, and customer-centric leadership. This Day in Legal History: SCOTUS Rejects Challenge to BrownOn September 12, 1958, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision in Cooper v. Aaron, firmly rejecting a challenge by the State of Arkansas to the enforcement of Brown v. Board of Education. In the wake of Brown, which declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, Arkansas officials sought to delay desegregation efforts in Little Rock, citing violent resistance and the need to preserve public order. The state's governor and legislature argued they were not bound by the Court's ruling.The Supreme Court rejected that claim unequivocally. In a rare decision signed by all nine justices, the Court reaffirmed the supremacy of the Constitution and the binding nature of its interpretations. It stated that the Constitution is the "supreme law of the land," and that the Court's rulings are final and must be followed by all states, regardless of political disagreement or local unrest.The ruling was a direct rebuke to Governor Orval Faubus, who had used the Arkansas National Guard to block the entry of nine Black students into Little Rock Central High School in 1957. President Eisenhower had responded by sending federal troops to enforce the desegregation order. Cooper v. Aaron underscored the federal judiciary's power to enforce constitutional rights, even in the face of open defiance by state authorities.The Court's opinion in Cooper was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement, signaling that federal law could not be nullified by state action. It also clarified that resistance to judicial decisions, especially on constitutional matters, was itself unconstitutional. By reasserting its own authority and that of the federal government, the Court helped ensure that desegregation would proceed, however slowly, across the South.Senate Republicans pushed through a rule change aimed at speeding up the confirmation of President Donald Trump's executive-branch nominees. In a 53-45 vote, the GOP majority limited the ability of Senate Democrats to slow the process, allowing groups of nominees to be confirmed together rather than individually. The change does not apply to Cabinet heads or federal judges.Senate Majority Leader John Thune defended the move, saying the chamber was being bogged down by procedural delays. In contrast, Democratic Senator Adam Schiff warned the rule change weakens institutional checks on presidential power, calling it a further erosion of Senate independence. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized it as enabling a “conveyor belt of unqualified nominees.”This is the third significant alteration in 12 years to Senate rules that weaken the minority party's influence, a trend that began with Democrats in 2013 and continued under Republicans in 2017. The first group of Trump nominees could see expedited confirmation as early as next week. Judge Ricardo Martinez ruled that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) lacked the authority to impose immigration-based restrictions on access to Head Start, criticizing the agency for failing to follow proper rulemaking procedures.The decision followed a similar ruling one day earlier from a federal judge in Rhode Island, which halted the policy in 21 Democratic-led states and the District of Columbia. The Seattle lawsuit was brought by Head Start associations from Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin, along with two parent advocacy groups. They challenged a July directive that expanded the interpretation of the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) to include Head Start among programs limited to legal residents.Since 1998, HHS had interpreted the law as not applying to non-postsecondary education programs like Head Start. Judge Martinez stated that Congress had effectively endorsed that interpretation by not altering the law and had even broadened access to Head Start over time.
