Health law attorney Dennis Hursh discusses his article, "Why hospitals are quietly capping top doctors' pay." For nearly 40 years, he has reviewed physician employment agreements and reveals a shocking recent trend: hospitals are increasingly capping physician salaries, often at the 90th or even 75th percentile of national benchmarks. Dennis explains that hospitals often justify this practice with the ludicrous claim that it prevents fraud, an argument that illogically presumes 10 to 25 percent of the top-earning physicians are breaking the law. The conversation details the legitimate reasons for high compensation—from top-tier productivity to practicing in undesirable locations—and exposes the flaw in allowing hospitals to use their own biased, in-house staff to determine "fair market value." Listeners will learn actionable advice on how to demand an independent, third-party valuation and the specific contract language needed to protect their compensation. Finally, Dennis warns how this practice has an insidious, long-term effect of artificially lowering salary benchmarks for all physicians, penalizing the very workhorses the health care system relies on. In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I sat down with Fred Helou, founder and CEO of Vagaro, a platform reshaping how service-based businesses in the beauty, wellness, and fitness sectors operate in a digital world. What began as an idea sparked by a frustrating haircut booking experience during a business trip to Korea has evolved into a platform used by over 250,000 professionals worldwide. Fred walked me through his journey from developing the concept in 1999 to officially launching Vagaro in 2009 after being laid off during the financial crisis. Along the way, he navigated shifting technology trends, from desktop tools to mobile apps and now artificial intelligence. At its core, Vagaro has always aimed to be a digital assistant for its users, allowing solopreneurs and large enterprises alike to focus on their craft while automation handles the rest. Our conversation explored how AI is quietly transforming the day-to-day operations of small businesses. From writing emails and responding to reviews to answering customer chats and booking appointments in real time, Vagaro's AI tools are making it easier for service providers to grow without hiring additional staff. Fred outlined a future where professionals simply set goals for their schedule and let AI optimize bookings, promotions, and customer engagement around the clock. What stood out was Fred's commitment to enhancing—not replacing—the human experience. He spoke candidly about the irreplaceable role of the hairdresser or personal trainer and why no one wants scissors near their neck managed by a robot. Instead, the platform empowers professionals with enterprise-grade tools once out of reach for smaller operators. Fred also shared how his experience growing up during the Lebanese Civil War shaped his resilience as a founder. That perspective has influenced Vagaro's long-term approach to product development, culture, and navigating uncertainty. As AI evolves from assistance to autonomy, how is your business preparing to scale without losing the human touch that sets it apart?

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Would you like access to our advanced agency training for FREE? https://www.agencymastery360.com/training With clients increasingly expecting their agencies to leverage AI, are you waiting for client direction, or leading the way on how to use it? Today's featured guest has a unique vantage point on this shift. He runs a platform that connects clients with credible agencies while helping agencies showcase their expertise, giving him a front-row seat to what clients truly want and what agencies fear about AI. With hundreds of thousands of agencies on his platform, he's seen firsthand that the agencies standing out are the ones leading the AI conversation, not waiting for permission to start it. He'll share why educating your clients on the possibilities of AI is now a competitive advantage and how his company's new verification layer aims to bring trust and clarity to an increasingly crowded agency marketplace. Tim Condon is the Chief Revenue Officer at Clutch, the largest B2B service provider marketplace online, boasting over 300,000 agencies. Tim helps agencies showcase services, collect reviews, and attract qualified buyers. With a front-row seat to the challenges and wins of agencies across industries, Tim sees exactly how the best adapt—and how others risk falling behind. Tim has been on the show before with advice on how agency owners can separate from the pack and position their agencies for success. In this episode, we'll discuss: Is AI coming for your agency? Document your AI processes before it gets expensive. How you should be starting the AI conversation. The power of documented proof. Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio Sponsors and Resources This episode is brought to you by Wix Studio: If you're leveling up your team and your client experience, your site builder should keep up too. That's why successful agencies use Wix Studio — built to adapt the way your agency does: AI-powered site mapping, responsive design, flexible workflows, and scalable CMS tools so you spend less on plugins and more on growth. Ready to design faster and smarter? Go to wix.com/studio to get started. Is AI Coming for Your Agency? It Depends The elephant in every agency Slack channel: Will AI replace us? Tim sees a spectrum. Some agencies think they're immune (“We only serve local dentists, so we're safe.”), while others are already using AI to transform delivery, productizing what used to be manual labor into scalable SaaS products for other agencies. Most agencies are stuck in the middle - unsure where to begin and afraid to fall behind. Basically, if your clients are tech-savvy DIYers, yes, you're at risk. But 99% of clients aren't like that. They want the results AI brings, but they don't want to build or manage it themselves. Hence, those who adopt AI to streamline delivery and elevate their positioning—not those who ignore it or just dabble, will win. AI Isn't a Threat. It's Your Edge AI is already making agencies faster, leaner, and more profitable if they leverage it correctly: Custom GPTs for marketing, sales training, and operations Automated research and lead qualification Speeding up delivery while maintaining quality Tim shared an example of a San Francisco agency using LLMs to automate internal processes. It wasn't complicated: structured folders, an AI model to search and output organized results. Simple, but powerful. If your agency isn't at least experimenting with AI to remove repetitive manual work, you're falling behind—not because AI will replace you, but because other agencies will outpace you by using AI to do what you do, faster and cheaper. Document Your AI Processes Now (Before It Gets Expensive) AI pricing today is like Uber in the early days: cheap to get you hooked, but it won't last. AI's current affordability is saving agencies the equivalent of multiple salaries annually. Eventually, these tools will increase in price to reflect their true value. What can you do about this? Jason recommends documenting your workflows and data used to train custom GPTs or AI agents now. If pricing spikes or a model goes down, you can pivot to another provider without losing your institutional knowledge. Why Agencies Must Shift from Order-Takers to Advisors Most agencies fail not because they lack skills, but because they act like order-takers. As a clients, it's frustrating for Jason when agencies ask, “What do you want us to do?” instead of showing him what's possible. Remember that as agencies, your purpose is to solve problems for your clients. Clients (dentists, local businesses, even large brands) don't know what's possible with AI. They think it's just a fancy chatbot. If you step up to educate and advise clients on what's possible with AI, you become indispensable. Look to build systems that: Research prospects automatically before calls Automate competitor and market analysis Help clients leverage AI in their workflows Agencies that step into this advisor role, showing clients what's possible and taking accountability for delivering results, become irreplaceable. You're not just executing tasks; you're creating outcomes they can't create alone, and that's where real value lies. Don't Be Another “Nomad Agency.” Be the Real Deal Too many people who failed at running agencies pivot into teaching how to run an agency while living the “digital nomad” lifestyle, without having actually built sustainable businesses. This creates noise and mistrust in the marketplace, making it harder for real agencies to stand out. Most of the time, agency owners are accidental entrepreneurs—people who mastered a skill and were asked to help, not those who started for the lifestyle. If you're listening to this, you're likely the latter. To stand out, you need to showcase not just what you can do but what you've actually done. Your wins, client results, and case studies speak louder than lifestyle photos on Instagram. The Power of Specific, Documented Proof If you want to stand out from the fly-by-night agencies, talk specifics. Others mostly speak in generalities. Instead, credible agencies share specifics. If you can clearly articulate, “Here's the exact problem we solved for a client just like you,” then you instantly separate yourself from the pack. Tools like Clutch help because they use AI to pull themes from your reviews to match buyer intent, but your agency still needs to collect, showcase, and share detailed case studies and client stories. Documentation matters. If you're working with SMBs or mid-market clients, they want to see clear, verified results before investing. When you can present proof, it's hard for low-quality competitors to compete, no matter how flashy their pitch decks look. Start gathering your “receipts” now to future-proof your positioning. Verification Adds Trust in a Crowded Marketplace Tim's company Clutch now offers Clutch Verified as an additional trust layer. They don't just take your word for it; they check your business registration, credit history, and operating longevity to separate real agencies from “gaming-the-system” players. It's a powerful way to signal to potential clients, “We're credible, stable, and vetted.” For clients, it's a good indicator of who you'll be working with and for agencies it becomes a sales asset. When potential clients research you on Clutch, verified agencies are prioritized, giving you an edge over competitors. It's a practical, low-cost step to build trust and signal legitimacy, especially if you're competing for premium clients. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset? “If we look at the entire history of the human experience, if you saw some text or you heard some spoken language, you could 100 percent reliably infer that there was a human who created that. Our experience of having that text or that image generated for us is very akin to the experience of a magic trick, and we sort of pre-subconsciously want to attribute some kind of intelligence to what's going on on the other side.At the core of the work is that sense of curiosity, that sense of joy, that sense of beauty, and that sense of learning. I've been fortunate to have all kinds of strange and interesting experiences, whether that's seeing weird things in the sky over secret military bases in the middle of the Nevada desert, going scuba diving and finding internet cables on the bottom of the ocean, or tracking spy satellites in the sky and being able to predict when they'll appear in a flash against the backdrop of stars. The world around us is extraordinary and embodied, right? It is not on screens, and I'm very privileged to have that be so much a part of my process.”Trevor Paglen is an artist whose work makes the invisible visible, whether he's photographing secret government sites from miles away or revealing the hidden infrastructures of mass surveillance. He's a geographer by training, and he combines investigative journalism with his art practice to explore the hidden power structures of our time, including military technology and artificial intelligence. His work has been exhibited in major museums around the world, and he's also an award-winning author. His exhibitions, like 'The Black Sites' and 'Limit Tele-photography,' have earned him critical acclaim, including a MacArthur Fellowship. Dave Sobel interviews Raffi Jamgotchian, founder and CEO of Triada Networks, about the current landscape of AI adoption in the financial services sector, particularly among small to medium-sized investment firms. Jamgotchian notes that while some clients are eager to embrace AI, others remain hesitant, mirroring trends seen with cloud technology. For those leaning into AI, Triada Networks is focusing on proof of concepts, helping clients structure their data effectively to leverage AI tools, especially in data analytics and research.Regulatory considerations play a significant role in how firms approach AI implementation. Many of Jamgotchian's clients operate in regulated environments, which affects their choice of data models and the types of large language models (LLMs) they can use. The challenge lies in handling sensitive, non-public information without risking regulatory violations. As firms navigate these complexities, the importance of data preparation becomes evident, with varying levels of readiness among clients impacting their ability to utilize AI effectively.Cybersecurity is a critical aspect of the conversation around AI and data management. Jamgotchian highlights that clients are increasingly proactive in seeking guidance on cybersecurity implications related to their business decisions. This shift is attributed to a combination of heightened regulatory scrutiny and a growing awareness of cybersecurity risks in the market. The conversation has evolved from being initiated by service providers to clients actively engaging in discussions about their cybersecurity needs.Looking ahead, Jamgotchian emphasizes the importance of monitoring regulatory developments, particularly from organizations like FINRA and the FCC, as they relate to AI. He anticipates that AI-related lawsuits will emerge, prompting changes in laws that could impact managed service providers (MSPs). The conversation concludes with a recognition that while the MSP landscape is evolving, the core mission of solving business problems through technology remains unchanged, and those who adapt will thrive in the future. Friday Night Live 1 August 2025In this episode, I explore philosophical inquiries that connect deeply with our lived experiences, focusing on consciousness, existence, and morality. We examine the relevance of these questions in our daily lives and challenge the tendency to stray into abstract theorization. Emphasizing the importance of moral frameworks, I distinguish between deviance and dissent in the context of societal behavior, reflecting on how these concepts apply in our current socio-political landscape. Throughout the discussion, I invite listeners to engage actively, sharing their thoughts to enrich our collective understanding. We conclude by affirming the power of individuals to redefine their identities and narratives, encouraging personal growth and the pursuit of truth and virtue in the face of life's complexities.FOLLOW ME ON X! https://x.com/StefanMolyneuxGET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025

In today's episode of Tech Talks Daily, I sat down with Andy Bell, Head of Data Product Management at Precisely, to explore a challenge that many organizations continue to underestimate: the role of data integrity in AI strategies. With only 12 percent of businesses expressing confidence in the quality of their AI data, it's clear that the rush to implement AI is often outpacing the readiness of the data that supports it. Andy and I unpack what happens when enterprises leap into generative or agentic AI without addressing foundational data issues. From hallucinations to bias to unreliable outputs, the risks are significant. As we discussed, these risks don't just impact models — they erode trust with customers and complicate accountability, especially in regulated industries where traceability is non-negotiable. We then explored the power of third-party data enrichment and how it can offer much-needed context that internal datasets often lack. Andy shared real-world examples, including how a major delivery company saved 65 million dollars by optimizing address accuracy and how San Bernardino County used Precisely's wildfire risk models to improve emergency planning. These aren't abstract use cases — they show measurable business value. Andy also introduced the Precisely Data Link program, a solution designed to make it easier to connect, manage, and query multiple third-party datasets. With persistent IDs and flexible delivery methods through APIs, managed services, and platforms like Snowflake and Databricks, Precisely is helping organizations speed up time to value while reducing integration headaches. Looking ahead, Andy shared how Precisely is building AI capabilities that allow users to query third-party data using natural language. This shift aims to make complex data interactions more intuitive and accessible to business users who may not be data engineers. If data is the fuel for AI, then the quality and context of that data will define the road ahead. Is your organization doing enough to ensure its data can be trusted by the AI it deploys?
On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, in the wake of Elon Musk's xAI Grok chatbot turning anti-Semitic following a recent update, Razib catches up with Nikolai Yakovenko about the state of AI in the summer of 2025. Nearly three years after their first conversations on the topic, the catch up, covering ChatGPT's release and the anticipation of massive macroeconomic transformations driven by automation of knowledge-work. Yakovenko is a former professional poker player and research scientist at Google, Twitter (now X) and Nvidia (now the first $4 trillion company). With more than a decade on the leading edge computer science, Yakovenko has been at the forefront of the large-language-model revolution that was a necessary precursor to the rise of companies like OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity, as well as hundreds of smaller startups. Currently, he is the CEO of DeepNewz, an AI-driven news startup that leverages the latest models to retrieve the ground-truth on news-stories. Disclosure: Razib actively uses and recommends the service and is an advisor to the company. Razib and Yakovenko first tackle why Mark Zuckerberg's Meta is offering individual pay packages north of $200 million, poaching some of OpenAI's top individual contributors. Yakovenko observes that it seems Meta is giving up on its open-source Llama project, their competitor to the models that underpin OpenAI and ChatGPT (he also comments that it seems that engineers at xAI are disappointed in the latest version of Grok). Overall, though the pay-packages of AI engineers and researchers are high; there is now a big shakeout as massive companies with the money and engineering researchers pull away from their competitors. Additionally, in terms of cutting-edge models, the US and China are the only two international players (Yakovenko notes parenthetically that Chinese engineers are also the primary labor base of American AI firms). They also discuss how it is notable that almost three years after the beginning of the current booming repeated hype-cycles of artificial intelligence began to crest, we are still no closer to “artificial general intelligence” and the “intelligence super-explosion” that Ray Kurzweil has been predicting for generations. AI is partially behind the rise of companies like Waymo that are on the verge of transforming the economy, but overall, even though AI is still casting around for its killer app, big-tech has fully bought in and believes that the next decade will determine who wins the future.
Law Smith and Eric Readinger discuss various topics, including their podcast's milestone of reaching episode 490 and potential future guests like Vinnie Tortorich. They debate the impact of AI on jobs, noting that jobs requiring human touch are more secure. They also discuss the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, its unusual characteristics, and speculations about its origin, including the possibility of it being an alien spacecraft. Additionally, they touch on the challenges of driving in Tampa, the impact of AI on comedy and art, and the importance of human touch in creative fields. “There's a word for this brain rot, right? I think that's very real. There are studies coming out now that are showing that the more and more of our cognitive labor we offload to AI systems, the less creative we become, the less critical we become, and the less of our human faculties for reason we use. There's something sad about that, but there's also something dangerous about it because that leaves us very open to being manipulated. The surveillance capitalism kind of economy of extracting data from every possible moment of everyday life in order to extract value. The sensor systems that we're surrounded with are not simply passive devices that are recording us; they are increasingly becoming active sculptors of our experience of reality. Playing dirty. If we look at the entire history of the human experience, if you saw some text or you heard some spoken language, you could 100 percent reliably infer that there was a human who created that. Our experience of having that text or that image generated for us is very akin to the experience of a magic trick, and we sort of pre-subconsciously want to attribute some kind of intelligence to what's going on on the other side.I'm trying to think about these other media strategies, whether that's UFO photography, psychological operations, magic, or neuroscience, and take them seriously as contributing factors to the changing visual culture. With the collection at Pace Gallery, (New York, Jun 26–Aug 15) it was really just to put those images together and show them. They're all photographed on film. A lot of them are photographed on instant film. They're not images that are made with AI; they're not images that are photoshopped. What I really wanted to get at was thinking about the ways in which what we see in an image is very often what we're predisposed to see. I am playing with these mechanics of perception and proposing that as a way of thinking about images now.At the core of the work is that sense of curiosity, that sense of joy, that sense of beauty, and that sense of learning. He's recently opened a new exhibition at Pace Gallery in New York called Cardinals, which delves into the intriguing connections between UFO sightings, AI, and the spread of disinformation.Episode Websitewww.creativeprocess.info/podInstagram:@creativeprocesspodcast
