In this episode of New Books Network, Laura Goldberg speaks with Thomas David DuBois, Professor at Beijing Normal University, about his book China in Seven Banquets, which traces Chinese history through seven extraordinary meals. Gastronomy and dining rituals offer a revealing historical framework: they make visible social order, ethical values, and political power, expressed through ingredients, preparation, display, and etiquette. DuBois shares stories of early ritual feasts shaped by Confucian thought and of vast imperial banquets with hundreds of dishes – diving into fermented meat sauces, courtly excess, and the arrival of new foods via the Silk Road. Conversation also turns to the modern period, considering the globalization of Chinese cuisine and the circulation of foreign foods within China. A feast from film – in the opening sequence of cult classic Eat, Drink, Man, Woman – is explored, as is the potential of food security impacting China's culinary future. In addition, DuBois shares how he recreated dozens of traditional recipes using modern kitchen techniques – all of which he includes in the book for the intrepid home cook. Thoughtful and engaging, the discussion invites listeners to see meals not simply as nourishment, but as moments where culture, power, and history come together. Learn more about your ad choices. We have devoted several podcasts to the issue of how parents get children to read - off screens and into pages. We talk about it - others DO something about it. You might not expect to find Stephen Curry, the great pro basketball player, to be among that group. However, Stephen and his wife Ayesha have a foundation - Eat.Learn.Play - and over the past few years they've given books every Christmas to every elementary school child in Oakland, California where Stephen started his pro career. They invited us to Oakland to see the program in action. Charlie went and had a chance to talk to the Currys about why they, like the two of us, think this issue is so critical. 1 These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out. 2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. 3 As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable. 4 Take away the dross from the silver, and material comes out for the refiner. 5 Take away the wicked from the king's presence, and his throne will be established in righteousness. 6 Don't exalt yourself in the presence of the king, or claim a place among great men; 7 for it is better that it be said to you, "Come up here," than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom your eyes have seen. 8 Don't be hasty in bringing charges to court. What will you do in the end when your neighbor shames you? 9 Debate your case with your neighbor, and don't betray the confidence of another, 10 lest one who hears it put you to shame, and your bad reputation never depart. 11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. 12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover to an obedient ear. 13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to those who send him; for he refreshes the soul of his masters. 14 As clouds and wind without rain, so is he who boasts of gifts deceptively. 15 By patience a ruler is persuaded. A soft tongue breaks the bone. 16 Have you found honey? Eat as much as is sufficient for you, lest you eat too much, and vomit it. 17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he be weary of you, and hate you. 18 A man who gives false testimony against his neighbor is like a club, a sword, or a sharp arrow. 19 Confidence in someone unfaithful in time of trouble is like a bad tooth or a lame foot. 20 As one who takes away a garment in cold weather, or vinegar on soda, so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart. 21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat. If he is thirsty, give him water to drink; 22 for you will heap coals of fire on his head, and Yahweh will reward you. 23 The north wind produces rain; so a backbiting tongue brings an angry face. 24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop than to share a house with a contentious woman. 25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. 26 Like a muddied spring and a polluted well, so is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked. 27 It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it honorable to seek one's own honor. 28 Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint. Calories. They've been at the heart of dieting advice for decades. Eat fewer, burn more, lose weight. simple, right? Except it's not that simple. Calories only tell us a fraction of the story. To really understand what's going on, we need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Helping us take this step is biologist Giles Yeo. He'll explain why obsessing over the numbers doesn't work, and how we can change the way we approach weight loss.

1 When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you; 2 put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite. 3 Don't be desirous of his dainties, since they are deceitful food. 4 Don't weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint. 5 Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky. 6 Don't eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and don't crave his delicacies, 7 for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. "Eat and drink!" he says to you, but his heart is not with you. 8 You will vomit up the morsel which you have eaten and waste your pleasant words. 9 Don't speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words. 10 Don't move the ancient boundary stone. Don't encroach on the fields of the fatherless, 11 for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you. 12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge. 13 Don't withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die. 14 Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol. 15 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine. 16 Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak what is right. 17 Don't let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear Yahweh all day long. 18 Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off. 19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path! 20 Don't be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat; 21 for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags. 22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and don't despise your mother when she is old. 23 Buy the truth, and don't sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding. 24 The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him. 25 Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice! 26 My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways. 27 For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well. 28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men. 29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? 30 Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine. 31 Don't look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. 32 In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper. 33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things. 34 Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the middle of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging: 35 "They hit me, and I was not hurt! They beat me, and I don't feel it! When will I wake up? I can do it again. I will look for more." Listen Donate Subscribe: Proverbs Daily Podcast Psalms Daily Podcast

In this episode, Dr. Anthony Youn dives into the glow-ups everyone is talking about — from Lindsay Lohan's refreshed look to Christina Aguilera's youthful transformation — and asks the question on all of our minds: What's really behind these changes? Are they the result of strategic, modern cosmetic procedures… or something more? Dr. Youn pulls back the curtain on today's most buzzed-about facial rejuvenation techniques, especially the so-called “ponytail lift,” a newer approach that's giving traditional facelifts some serious competition. He breaks down what actually goes into these subtle-yet-powerful makeovers — from brow and mid-face lifting to fat grafting, lasers, and all the little tweaks that add up to a natural, lifted look. With his signature blend of honesty and expertise, Dr. Youn explains what works, what to be cautious about, and why “less is more” is becoming the golden rule in modern aesthetic medicine. Whether you're curious about celebrity transformations or simply want to understand the future of facial rejuvenation, this episode offers a clear, candid look at how people are getting younger-looking results without the old-school facelift vibe.

Care More Be Better: Social Impact, Sustainability + Regeneration Now
Guest: Dr. William W. Li, NYT-Bestselling Author of Eat to Beat DiseaseOriginally Recorded: May 2022 on Nutrition Without CompromiseSponsor of Original Episode: ÖRLÖ Nutrition Co-Hosts: Corinna Bellizzi & Tia Walden This episode is shared with permission from Nutrition Without Compromise and ORLO Nutrition. Episode Summary Today's bonus episode comes from the archives of a show I once hosted—Nutrition Without Compromise—a series created to explore nourishment that never sacrifices human health, planetary health, or ethical integrity. While Dr. Li has joined us on Care More Be Better a few times, this conversation has never before aired here, and it remains one of my favorites. Dr. William Li, internationally renowned physician, scientist, and author of the bestseller Eat to Beat Disease, breaks down the body's five health defense systems, the science of using food as medicine, and how we can personalize nutrition to strengthen immunity, support longevity, and reduce disease risk. We talk about dietary diversity, the joy of eating, the role of omega-3s, the pitfalls of low-quality supplements, and how modern research is reframing what it means to live vibrantly at every age. This episode originally aired under the sponsorship of ÖRLÖ Nutrition, makers of carbon-negative, algae-based omega-3s grown in Iceland using clean geothermal energy. Their commitment to regenerative nutrition aligned beautifully with the ethos of that show—and with the work we continue here. Topics We Cover Dr. Li's journey from medical researcher to food-as-medicine pioneer The Five Health Defense Systems: angiogenesis, stem cells, microbiome, DNA protection, and immunity Why dietary diversity—not restriction—is the foundation of vibrant health How food can enhance medical treatments, not just prevent disease The rise of planetary-aware eating and the importance of responsible sourcing Omega-3s: fish vs. algae, and why quality matters The 5x5x5 framework for daily eating without rigidity How lifestyle, joy, and cultural food traditions shape well-being Dr. Li's free masterclasses and practical tips for getting started Referenced In This Episode Eat to Beat Disease by Dr. William W. Guest: Elizabeth Gilbert: author of the new memoir, "All the Way to the River." She is also the author of several other bestselling novels including "Eat, Pray, Love" and "City of Girls." In this episode of The Rainmaking Podcast, Scott Love speaks with executive coach and author Luci Gabel about optimal performance for high achievers—and Luci's definition is simple and practical: optimal performance equals energy. She explains that rainmakers and senior professionals aren't just managing tasks; they are managing the internal capacity to think clearly, communicate well, make high-stakes decisions, and stay steady under pressure. Luci introduces a framework of six “pillars” of energy that combine the physical and mental sides of performance: nutrition, movement, rest/sleep, mindset, communication, and vision. Her point is that you cannot separate physiology from leadership—small shifts in hydration, rest, movement, or self-talk can immediately improve focus, mood, decision quality, and resilience. Luci also emphasizes that most professionals don't pay attention to energy until they're already depleted; the first step is simply noticing what drains you and what elevates you throughout the day. Rather than overwhelming people with a complete lifestyle overhaul, she advocates high-leverage, minimal viable changes—one small adjustment practiced consistently for a week or two (like increasing water intake, taking a 10-minute walk, or turning screens off an hour earlier). She recommends turning the six pillars into a simple monthly self-audit: draw a “wheel,” rate yourself from 1–10 on each pillar, identify the lowest score, and focus on one small improvement there. Over time, this creates compounding gains in energy and clarity. Luci closes by pointing listeners to her coaching and group programs built on these pillars, along with her podcast, Leadership Life, Health and Happiness, for continued strategies on sustainable performance. In this episode, Dr. Anthony Youn sits down with Dr. Mindy Pelz — bestselling author, women's health expert, and someone who has lived the menopause journey herself. Dr. Pelz opens up about how menopause completely reframed her life, not as an ending or a decline, but as a powerful transition into greater clarity, confidence, and leadership. She breaks down the science in a way that actually makes sense — from how our brains shift during this stage to why our bodies demand different kinds of movement, sleep habits, and even fasting rhythms. Together, she and Dr. Youn dig into the evolutionary story behind menopause, the neurological upgrades no one talks about, and the practical daily strategies that help women feel strong, energized, and mentally sharp. This conversation is equal parts inspiring and actionable — an invitation to see menopause not as something to survive, but as a chance to step into a new, stronger version of yourself.
Ending Well: A Pruning Deep Dive This is week six of the Ending Well series, and we're talking about something a lot of us are living through in real time: pruning—the cutting away, the stripping back, and the strange mercy of God doing holy surgery on our lives at the end of a hard year. "Every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit." – John 15:2 ⏱ Episode Timestamps 00:00 – Intro + Why open enrollment and health insurance feel like a bad rite of passage 03:00 – CrowdHealth: what it is, how it works, and why it's different from insurance 06:00 – Week six of Ending Well: why pruning is the theme of this year 09:30 – Defining "pruning," "fruit," "wilderness," and "discipline" (without the Christianese) 15:30 – John 15 and how Blake accidentally prayed for pruning this year 20:00 – Wilderness seasons: dry, slow, hidden growth, and deep dependence on God 25:30 – Seven "flavors" of pruning Blake walked through this year 30:00 – Loss and closed doors: when God rips things out of your hands 36:00 – Being forced to slow down or stop: "You can't heal on the battlefield that broke you" 41:00 – Loneliness, isolation, and when God clears the table so you can hear His voice 46:00 – Idols exposed: productivity, performance, and the golden statue God started tearing down 52:00 – When God prunes even good things (like the gym, routines, and rhythms you love) 57:00 – "Show me the purpose, Lord": praying for clarity in the middle of the mess 1:02:00 – How pruning makes you more like Jesus and prepares you for the "next level" 1:08:00 – Toy bins, clutter, and why fewer branches can mean more joy 1:12:00 – How to walk through pruning differently next time: slow down, surrender, obey faster 1:17:00 – Being honest with God instead of stuffing frustration and disappointment 1:21:00 – Why opening your Bible became survival, not a checkbox 1:25:00 – Friendship breakups as pruning: betrayal, loneliness, and healing with a limp 1:30:00 – Counting the fruit at the end of a brutal year What This Episode Is Really About In this deep dive, Blake unpacks pruning not as a punishment but as proof that God cares too much to leave you overgrown and exhausted. You'll hear about: How this year's pruning looked like: job pivots relational shifts homeschooling struggles closed doors and changed direction Why pruning is always connected to fruit, but not the kind the world celebrates Not achievement, numbers, or hustle But love, joy, peace, wisdom, humility (Galatians 5:22–23) The difference between: Punishment vs. discipline Chaos vs. God's clarifying love (Hebrews 12:6) Seven "flavors" of pruning Blake walked through: Loss of things she thought she needed Doors slamming shut at the last second Conviction and refinement in hidden places Being forced to slow down or stop entirely Loneliness and isolation when life got too loud Idols exposed—especially productivity and performance The trimming of even good things to make room for better Blake also shares how her prayer shifted from: "God, why are You doing this?" to "Show me the purpose, Lord." And how that shift opened the door to real trust, deeper Bible hunger, and new fruit she couldn't see while God was still hacking away at the branches.
