In a country where birth control access is in jeopardy and women's medical needs have been historically overlooked, how do social media trends like #lutealphase and "cycle syncing" complicate the narrative? This is... Your Body, Whose Choice? And for the next few weeks, we're looking at the cultural, legal, and ideological frameworks shaping reproductive health in America...and what this means for the near and far future of our families, our personal agency, and our planet. Today, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professor Kate Clancy and reporter Lindsay Gellman join the show to clear up the misinformation around menstruation and how the search for guidance can lead to murky waters.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Send us a textFor centuries, people speak of a mystical connection between the cycles of the Moon and the menstrual cycle. But is there any truth to it—or is it just ancient symbolism carried into modern wellness culture? In this episode, I dive into both the science and the sacred stories surrounding this possible connection. I share with you the current (and past) research on whether the menstrual cycle truly synchronises with the lunar phases—and why this idea continues to resonate deeply with many women and those who menstruate. We'll explore:✨ The origins of lunar-menstrual synchronisation.
The title explains it all but we discuss where focusing on this type of specific training falls in a much larger area of performance, nutrition, training, and sleep.Article LINK: https://drive.google.com/file/d/11-xcw23uN4BgoQbUxSwrSaJ9jbxUi1DK/view?usp=sharing #complicatedsimple #resultsthatgiveback #researchreview
Did you know that 3-8% of women and people with cycles experience PMDD, which stands for premenstrual dysphoric disorder? If you are one of these people, or you are close to or work with someone with PMDD, this episode is especially for you. It's also for you, if you - like me - have experienced intense, debilitating, dark and challenging emotional disturbance in the premenstrual phase of your cycle, often known as PMS or premenstrual syndrome. Today Alexandra and Sjanie explore the inner autumn of the cycle as a gateway to our power. As they share, our premenstrual symptoms aren't a design flaw, but can be better understood as a truth-telling signal or a warning sign from the deepest part of ourselves about all that needs to be healed within us, and all that needs to be healed in our world. Part of the challenge we all face here is that we live in a world that dismisses and denies our cyclical experience, which creates a disconnect with our cyclical wisdom. In other words, what if it's not the menstrual cycle that is the problem, but rather it's a culture that pathologises, shames and denies the power and value of our cycles, and especially the power of the premenstrual phase? We explore:How the premenstrual phase of the cycle gives you feedback about your sensitivity and how to tend to it, so it can be in service to your power - because the world needs your depth of feeling. The emotional spirals that PMDD can evoke, where intense feelings arise, attack becomes your best defense, you lash out at others, and then, a couple of days later, often once your period has arrived, you have to pick up the pieces and negotiate the aftermath of self-hatred and shame. Why we all need to take what we feel in inner autumn more seriously. The premenstrual phase of the cycle is the emotional ‘novocaine' wearing off, a time where you come to your senses, and you have heightened intuition and insight. ---Receive our free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. Join Dr. Carrie Bedient (Fertility Center of Las Vegas), Dr. Susan Hudson (Texas Fertility Center), and Dr. Abby Eblen (Nashville Fertility Center) as they welcome their special guest Erica Johnston-MacAnanny from Shady Grove Fertility in Richmon for a candid and informative conversation about what's really going on with your period. Erika breaks down what's considered “normal” in terms of cycle length and dives into what heavy or scant bleeding might be telling you about your health. From anatomical issues like fibroids and polyps to hormonal causes such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or hypothalamic amenorrhea (common in elite athletes), this episode covers it all. Erica also shares insight on how IUDs and uterine scar tissue can affect your flow. The doctors also tackle some common myths—like whether a regular period always means you're fertile—and explore what it could mean if your once-regular cycle suddenly shortens. Whether you're just curious or actively trying to understand your fertility, you won't want to miss this essential episode… period.

Menstruation is the cyclical shedding of the endometrium triggered by falling progesterone levels. Menstruation is a rare trait found in less than 2% of mammals and likely evolved independently at least 4 times. Why do some mammals menstruate while most do not? The leading hypothesis is that menstruation occurs as a nonadaptive consequence of spontaneous decidualization of the endometrium, which evolved to increase biosensoring of embryo quality. While the trait of spontaneous decidualization (and as a byproduct, menstruation) was likely shaped by natural selection, menstruation also disposes women to conditions such as endometriosis, pre-menstrual syndrome, and bleeding disorders, especially in the contemporary context. A few months ago, our guest today, the founder of Cycle Seeds Iris Josephina Verstappen, was hosting a retreat in a goddess temple in Malta when she began to miscarry. Having accompanied many women through pregnancy loss, both as a doula and a holistic hormone and cycle coach, she's witnessed the storm of emotions that can arise with miscarriage, as well as the taboo surrounding it. So she decided to publicly share about her experience with her 60,000 followers, to be a permission slip for others, so that they don't have to suffer in silence. In our conversation Iris shares generously and vulnerably about how she has navigated the grief, loneliness, confusion and earth-shaking fear that it could all happen again, as well as the paradoxical feelings of love, possibility, and gratitude for how the experience of pregnancy opened her up. Our hope is that if you're one of the one in four women and people who experience pregnancy loss, this conversation helps you to feel less alone with whatever you're feeling. We explore:The imposter syndrome that arose for Iris when she tried to go back to work, and found herself questioning how this could have happened to her when she was doing everything “right”, especially as an educator in the field of cyclical living and women's health, and how the antidote was simply to lie with her belly flat on the earth. The lack of community support around grief and loss, but especially in the post-partum window after miscarriage where the body is still recovering from the pregnancy, and Iris offers some great ideas for how to support a friend going through this. How Iris is navigating the identity crisis that comes with inhabiting the liminal space between maiden and mother, between becoming and unbecoming, as well as being in a body that looks and feels different after her pregnancy loss.---Receive our free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. In this episode, Katie Crane explores the increasingly popular concept of training with your menstrual cycle. Is it legit—or just another wellness trend? She breaks down the four phases of the menstrual cycle and explains how each phase can affect energy, strength, motivation, and emotional health. The menstrual cycle is a vital sign. So why isn't it treated like one? 10 years after ACOG said we should be assessing every teen girl's cycle… most clinicians still aren't doing it. We need to change that. Follow this link to view the full show notes page! This episode is sponsored by Lisa's new book Real Food for Fertility, co-authored with Lily Nichols! Grab your copy here! Today's episode dives into something that's frankly underestimated and not talked about enough: women's health. Not only are women underrepresented in clinical studies, but they're frequently told that their suffering is either “normal” or “all in their head.” Or they're prescribed a bunch of pharmaceuticals that haven't been extensively studied in their bodies, especially for long-term effects. My guest today believes that when women's health is optimized, they can GIVE 100% to their daily tasks and FIND MORE JOY in life. It's that simple. And women's health is intimately connected to their hormones, emotions, and their menstrual cycles. So let's stop making menstrual health a taboo subject, and make it a priority instead. Dr. Robinson always felt a calling to help others in the area of health and wellness. At the age of 9, she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that was put into remission using conventional medicine. She never forgot the kindness shown by her doctors and wanted to ‘pay it forward'. This passion for health took her to the medical field. She graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 2011 and began working for the U.S. Army as a pharmacist. Upon completing her time in the service, she began working for CVS pharmacy in 2017. In 2020, Dr. Robinson was introduced to the world of Functional Medicine. Within a few months, she achieved certification as a practitioner through Functional Medicine University, quit her job at CVS and branched out on her own. All this time, she recognized there were still some unresolved issues in her health. Using a holistic approach, she started doing the work, seeing results and helping others do the same. A Functional Medicine Approach for the Best Menstrual Cycles You've Ever Had with Nicole Robinson, PharmD Today's episode dives into something that's frankly underestimated and not talked about enough: women's health. She currently owns a 1-on-1 practice where she inspires, educates and coaches women to the healthiest version of themselves. As part of our ongoing series about the connection between menstrual cycle awareness and our health & wellbeing today we're exploring how getting to know your cycle can be a vital foundation for mental and emotional health.Alexandra and Sjanie are both retired therapists, and today they share their learnings from their own personal cycle awareness practice, as well as working with thousands of students over several decades about how mental and emotional health rests on us knowing ourselves, feeling our value and worth, and understanding the nature of cyclicity - all of which are skills we learn from connecting to our cycles. We also explore how the root of much of our collective menstrual and emotional turmoil as women and people who have, or have had cycles is the cultural denial, shutting down, ignoring, belittling, and suppression of our cyclical nature. We explore:Alexandra's personal journey with dissolving the shame of her early years and claiming her worth through cycle awareness and menopause, so that now she is emotionally resilient to the extent that she is immune to toxic shame. The two stable poles of the menstrual cycle, and the two transitional phases and how to work with them all to understand ourselves better and create emotional and psychological wellbeing. How following the call to stop and rest at menstruation is medicinal for us emotionally and psychologically. ---Receive our free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. Together, we unpack the common claims around hormones and training—from whether you should change your workouts based on your cycle, to the real effects of fasted cardio and birth control on performance and muscle growth. In the latest episode of the HHH Podcast, Coach Kara and Coach Lauren delve into the topic of how women can manage their training and health during their menstrual cycle. They share personal anecdotes and practical advice based on their experiences as athletes. They emphasize the importance of understanding one's own body and cycles, including how menstrual phases can affect energy levels and overall fitness. The conversation highlights that while many women might feel hesitant about exercising on their periods, both coaches find that they often experience increased energy and improved performance during menstruation rather than before it. They touch upon the importance of nutrition, particularly consuming whole foods and managing iron intake during the menstrual cycle. Additionally, they discuss the impact of sleep, hydration, and the necessity of tracking menstrual cycles to optimize health and training.

Menstrual cycle awareness can guide us to create more rest in our lives, including a mini menstrual sabbatical each month to renew us and restore our connection to joy. Our guest today, author, poet and teacher Edveeje Fairchild has been a devotee to rest for her entire life, having been raised in a spiritual tradition that honoured the weekly sabbath. And this non-negotiable rhythm of rest has been one of the key practices that has formed her philosophy of joy as a compass for our lives.Edveeje's first book, Joy as the Compass: Freeing Yourself from the Seven Activist Addictions has just been published. Today we're exploring how menstrual cycle awareness is a vital ingredient to a joy-focused life, through the lens of our environmental activist work together, and how we applied menstrual cycle awareness and cyclical living within the reforestation non-profit TreeSisters to plant a million trees. Edveeje also shares generously from the midst of her menopause transition, which has included the trauma of the sudden loss of her beloved twin sister, as well as the devastation of her small mountain town due to hurricane Helene. We explore how her connection to the ancient trees and wild nature in the ‘Mother Forest' around her have held her in this sacred menopause territory, even when life feels like death. We explore:What it means to be the ‘dream of the earth', how our menstrual cycles can help us to reconnect our inner nature with our outer nature and show up in our full glory, on behalf of Life itself. How Edveeje used menstrual cycle awareness to create all the policies, procedures, internal operations and organisational planning tools at TreeSisters, and anchor the theory of menstruality in very practical ways inside an emerging international non-profit. How Edveeje's discovered that her inner spring was her challenging hotspot in the menstrual cycle, and how this eventually led her to take a long sabbatical and follow the promptings of her menstrual cycle towards deeper joy. ---Receive our free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. When Toko-pa Turner first started to experience signs of perimenopause, she was simultaneously diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called rheumatoid arthritis, and the combination led to severe insomnia. Sleep deprivation is challenging for all of us, but in Toko-pa's case it was especially disorientating because for over twenty-five years she has been working with dreams in a mythopoetic way to answer life's deep soul questions.Sometimes called a Midwife of the Psyche, Toko-pa is the author of The Dreaming Way, and her work focuses on belonging, restoring the feminine, reconciling paradox, elevating grief, and facilitating ritual. She founded the Dream School in 2001 and has now grown a network of more than a hundred thousand dreamers worldwide.Toko-pa's journey with her dreams as her guide began when she was orphaned in her teens and entered the care system, and in our conversation today we track Toko-pa's personal dreaming journey, as well as how we can all take an intimate, deep-dive into the magical world of our dreams as a gateway to a different kind of intelligence. We explore:Why our cultures often dismiss the power of our dreams and how to reclaim your dreaming capacities in a world that has been stuck in a centuries-long patriarchal phase of worshipping rationality and materialism. How to ‘court' our dreams, and why we don't need to hire an expert to help us interpret our dreams, but rather to follow the wisdom of indigenous cultures and reclaim our dreaming as our mother tongue. How to keep a dream journal, and the key practice to do when you wake up after a big dream to ensure you remember it and can connect to the power of the symbols and wisdom within it. ---Receive our free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Kelly: What are your thoughts on HRT? Jacob: I recently watched your video ‘Is too much REM sleep an issue, in the last month I've been having a lot more REM sleep due to more stress, I just wanted to know if being on my phone before bed could be contributing to more REM Sleep, because my phone helps me take my mind off things but then maybe because it makes my brain active it causes me to have many dreams but that's why I am here asking for help. Tina: Hi Dr. Cabral. I'm hoping you can help me since nobody else has been able to. I have been low on vitamin D for years (steadily at 19), but have a strange reaction whenever I try to supplement with it. I'll immediately start my period, even if I had just finished my cycle a week or 2 prior, it will start again. I have done DNA testing and discovered that I am compromised in every pathway when it comes to vitamin D. I have tried various forms of vitamin D3 from gummies, capsules, and even patches, with always the same result of starting my cycle prematurely. Every doctor I've talked to has never heard of this reaction and can't figure it out. Please help. Erin: Middle of the night question HELP! So this has been going on awhile and it's so frustrating. I wake up during the night and have the sensation of a gnawing/gurgling sensation somewhere above the belly button. Sometimes if I don't eat something I start feeling awful.I can't figure out what is happening and what to do. I did the OAT test which came back for fungal/mold overgrowth. Is it related to this? Will i ever be able to sleep without having a snack during the night? So frustrated on this. Thank you so much E: Hello and thank you so much for your care and generosity. A couple questions, all related: 1)When I emailed support they emphasized NOT recommended to combine protocols. But on episode 837 (detox dos & don'ts), you said it was fine. I feel confused. When and which protocols is it ok to combine? I'm currently doing CBO and want to do mold and HMD, I'm wondering if any can be combined to speed up the process. 2)Relating to the CBO finisher: It sounds like it can be helpful to start sealing gut during CBO? Could you talk about this a bit? Would this be in addition to doing it afterwards or…? Also, I mistakenly bought clean gut probiotic for use during the finisher. Is it ok to use that for first 2 months of finisher and then transition to the daily probiotic?
