Buying ladybugs for biological control of pests can contribute to depleting the ladybug population in the wild and raises other concerns as well. Meanwhile, non-native ladybugs do the same valuable work — eating aphids and other pests that harm crops — but are often cast in a bad light anyway. My guest in this week's encore, Dr. Kaitlin Stack Whitney, an environmental studies scholar as well as a home gardener, explains that non-native insects don't always deserve their bad rap. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Christmas is often called the most wonderful time of the year, yet for many, it’s also one of the most exhausting. Between the holiday to-do lists, family obligations, and the weight of expectations - both our own and others’- this season can leave us physically weary, emotionally drained, and even spiritually depleted. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. Today, we’re talking about how to release those expectations, embrace true rest in Christ, and find renewal in Him. If your soul feels weary, this conversation is especially for you. Today we’ll be talking about Hope for the Weary Soul. Quotables from the episode: It’s no surprise that Christmas can leave us feeling depleted. We put pressure on ourselves to create the perfect holiday - perfect gifts, perfect décor, perfect meals and table settings, and perfect gatherings. Social media only adds to this burden, making it seem like everyone else has it all together. But the truth is, exhaustion isn’t just about being physically tired. It’s about the weight we carry in our hearts - disappointment, grief, unmet expectations, and the struggle to meet everyone’s needs, often while neglecting our own. Jesus knew we would experience this. That’s why in Matthew 11:28, He says, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. He invites us to exchange our striving for His peace. But that requires us to let go of what we were never meant to carry in the first place. If you’re feeling weary, I encourage you to take a moment and ask yourself: What am I holding onto that God never asked me to carry? Maybe it’s the expectation of making everyone happy. Maybe it’s guilt over what you can’t do. Maybe it’s the grief of a loved one who isn’t here this Christmas. Whatever it is, the first step toward rest is recognizing what is making us weary and laying it at Jesus’ feet. Christmas is a busy time with many annual traditions and expectations. Others have expectations of us, we have expectations of others, and we have expectations of ourselves. As a result, sadly, it’s a recipe for failure. Part of the problem with expectations is that it’s impossible to meet unvoiced expectations. Everyone’s picture of the holiday varies. Some celebrate with family on Christmas Eve, others celebrate on Christmas. Some families draw names for gifts and possibly set a monetary limit, while other families give gifts to everyone. Some families get up early while others sleep in late. There is as much variability to the who, what, when, and where of the celebration as there are people celebrating. So how do we actually release those expectations? It starts with shifting our perspective. The world tells us Christmas is about performance, about how much we do, how beautiful we make it, how much we give. But God’s Word tells us something different. Christmas is about receiving. Receiving the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ. Martha was distracted by all the preparations, while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, simply being with Him. And what did Jesus say? Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Does that ever sound like you? I’ve certainly been guilty. This season, instead of being like Martha - running from one thing to the next, trying to make everything perfect, and meet a list of unspoken expectations - what if we chose to be like Mary? What if we sat at His feet, even in the middle of the chaos, and let His presence be enough? One practical way to do this is by setting boundaries. Say no to the things that drain you. Say yes to the things that nourish your soul. You don’t have to attend every event, bake every cookie, or create a Pinterest-worthy Christmas. Choose rest. Choose Jesus. Releasing expectations is only part of the equation. True renewal comes when we replace striving with abiding. John 15:4 says, Abide in me, and I in you. When we stay connected to Jesus, He renews our strength. One way to abide in Him this Christmas is by spending time in His Word. Even if it’s just a few minutes a day, let Scripture be your source of renewal. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint. When we take time to be with God, He refreshes our weary souls. Christmas isn’t about what we do. It’s about what’s already been done for us through Christ. No matter how much is on your plate, you don’t have to carry it alone. Jesus came to bring us peace, not pressure. So this Christmas, let’s step out of striving and into His rest. Prayer for the Weary Soul Heavenly Father, we come before You weary, but we know that You are our source of strength. Help us release the burdens we were never meant to carry and rest in Your perfect peace. Teach us to abide in You, to embrace Your presence above all else, and to find renewal in Your love. Thank You for the gift of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. In His name, we pray. Amen. Scripture References: Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Luke 10:38-42 tells the story of Mary and Martha. “Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” John 15:4 says, Abide in me, and I in you. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint. The black girdle hanging in your closet. The jeans you promise yourself you'll wear "this Christmas." The drive to your family's house wearing shapewear so tight you can't breathe, feeling ashamed the entire night because you're not "good enough" to wear those jeans. If this story sounds painfully familiar, this special Christmas episode is my gift to you—because you deserve to stop hiding behind Spanx and start actually enjoying your life. After struggling with my weight since my early twenties, I finally cracked the code of permanent weight loss in a way I never expected. On my 52nd birthday, I tried on my wedding dress and weighed 12 pounds less than on my wedding day. I also fit into the bridesmaid dress I wore at 16. But here's what nobody tells you: weight loss isn't the goal. Weight gain is a symptom of unaddressed emotional issues. Until you dig into the real patterns—the loneliness that makes you reach for baked goods, the fear of being kicked out of the tribe if you don't eat chocolate with your coffee group, the perfectionism that keeps you paralyzed—no app or diet will ever work long-term. This week, I'm sharing the most vulnerable stories from my Conquer Emotional Eating class: the retired woman who's "really good all day" but needs that cookie every night (spoiler: it's not about the cookie), the coffee group that bonds over complaining about weight while eating chocolate (what happens if you break the pattern?), and the perfectionist who couldn't start her workbook because she was afraid to use pen instead of pencil. Plus, I'm getting deeply honest about my own Christmas Eve girdle story—the shame, the uncomfortable drive, the shadow of "not good enough" that ruined what should have been joyful family time. My Christmas gift to you: Stop wasting time on Pinterest boards and apps. In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik sits down with Rich Ashton to unpack the real reason small businesses stall. Leadership gaps. Rich shares what he learned across a 45-year career acquiring and turning around small businesses. Hiring “experienced” leaders from outside often fails because they miss the realities of small business and they can break trust with internal teams. Promoting great employees can fail too when people get a title without training. Rich explains how self-imposed limitations show up in frontline employees. From emotional baggage and self-doubt to the belief that “I'm just a technician.” He also lays out what actually works. Practical support, direct feedback, consistent leadership conversations, and a culture rooted in shared values. If you want to build leaders who can run the business without you, this is the blueprint. About the Guest: Rich Ashton is a longtime entrepreneur and operator who developed an internal leadership training program after repeatedly seeing outside hires fail and internal promotions struggle. He is the author of “Growing Your Own. Common Sense Advice for Developing Leaders in Small Business.” Key Takeaways: Outside hires can flop in small businesses because they do not understand the pace, constraints, and culture. Internal promotions fail when people are expected to lead without training and real coaching. Self-imposed limitations often sound like “I'm not leadership material” or show up as emotional reactivity and low confidence. Some employees never saw leadership modeled at home or at work. That shapes what they believe is possible for them. Leadership growth works best as a step-by-step process. Not a one-time workshop. Make development mentally safer by pairing support with clear accountability. Kind but direct beats vague and “nice.” Connection comes first. Leaders get better results when they understand what makes people tick. A simple operating rhythm matters. Rich used bi-weekly leadership blogs and then forced discussion in meetings. That unlocked real behavior change. If you are a business owner you are not automatically a leader. Build your own leadership skills or get help fast. Shared values like integrity, customer service, and employee empowerment create culture alignment and reduce leadership friction. Welcome to episode 550 of The Food Blogger Pro Podcast! This week on the podcast, we are sharing a replay of our December Live Q&A from within the Food Blogger Pro membership — our annual Ask Bjork Anything session. ----- Every month within the Food Blogger Pro membership we host a Live Q&A for our members to attend. For most of these Q&As we welcome Food Blogger Pro Experts — people like Casey Markee, Andrew Wilder, and Allea Grummert — to answer questions based around their expertise. But every December we like to host an 'Ask Bjork Anything' to answer a wide range of questions from members! We wanted to share an edited version of the Q&A with our podcast listeners over our holiday break so that you could get a taste of what the Q&As are like in the membership and learn from all of the great questions our members asked! Happy Holidays! Here's a quick overview of the questions answered during the episode: Can you please refer a good SEO audit person for a small and newish blogger? What are best practices for URL slug? should you have the word recipe in them or does it not matter? I'm currently at 800k–900k page views/month in the high holiday season (usually 650k–800k throughout the year)- what do you recommend to push the site traffic to over 1 million page views/month as the baseline in even lower traffic seasons? After a hiatus from posting on my blog I'm wondering what are one or two things I should do that are the most important moving into 2026 for growth. Do you have any tips for Facebook? I see really little engagement on my posts and I'm wondering if it's worth it or not. Any suggestions for getting more comfortable on camera? I'm trying to film more videos/Reels and it's so hard! What is Pinch of Yum focusing on for 2026? Are you changing any strategies because of AI search? For someone starting this year, what would you prioritize? Social media? SEO? Newsletters? When should I start thinking about monetization? Is it still worth diving into onsite ads? What are some best practices for growing my email list? Is it still worth it to post on Pinterest with the rise of AI slop? Lately i've had a lot of spam ad comments on blog posts. I have to delete them and it's getting to be time consuming. I have the control to approve or delete the comments so the are not showing up on the blog thank goodness. How do you prevent these?! Is this a commen problem? I'm starting to notice the same issue with newletter signups. I'm curious how Pinch of Yum plans their content far enough ahead to thoroughly test recipes before publishing. How far in advance do they plan their editorial calendar, and how much time do they usually spend testing each recipe? If I want to run a food blog that focuses less on recipes and more on how to cook or how to use recipes in practical ways, how should I attract an audience, and how can I still use recipes to promote my work? How niche does one need to go these days? For example, I am in the toddler nutrition space, obviously very challenging to compete with the sites like yummy toddler food… do I need to go even further niche? I am a dietitian so I try and bring in that lens around supportive feeding and nutrition in the recipes/meals I create… but curious if I need to go further niched down If I want to shift my recipe blog into more of a "business hub" and focus on digital products rather than relying mainly on recipes and ad revenue, how would you approach that transition? I recently started a YouTube channel (thanks to your advice!), but I haven't monetized either my blog or YouTube yet. What would be the most strategic steps to move forward? Resources: ChatGPT Vs. Start selling digital products and services with MiloTree for FREE! If you're an online coach, course creator, or digital product seller, you've probably experienced this: You're working 35-45 hours a week managing sales, manually sending products, and personally following up with every customer. You're making some money, but you're completely burnt out. Sound familiar? In my newest episode, I shared the exact automation strategy that helped our MiloTree customer Ava transform her business. She went from making $1,800 a month while working 45 hours a week to earning over $11,000 a month working just 9 hours a week. The secret? She automated three key parts of her sales process using MiloTree. And in this post, I'm going to show you exactly what she automated and how you can set up the same system to sell digital products on autopilot. Show Notes: MiloTree Free Plan MailerLite (recommended email service provider) Goldmine Product AI Prompt Join The Blogger Genius Newsletter Become a Blogger Genius Facebook Group Subscribe to the Blogger Genius Podcast: iTunes YouTube Spotify The Problem: Manual Sales Are Killing Your Business Growth Here's what's happening to most digital product creators. You've built amazing products—courses, coaching packages, memberships, digital downloads. You're getting some sales, but you're stuck in a manual sales cycle that looks like this: Someone downloads your freebie → You manually add them to your email list → You manually send follow-up emails → You manually process orders → You manually deliver products → Repeat. This manual process has three major problems: Time Drain: You're spending hours every week on tasks that could be automated Revenue Cap: You can only make as much money as the hours you can physically work Burnout Risk: Eventually, managing everything manually becomes unsustainable The good news? You can automate your entire sales process so your business runs without you working harder—you just work smarter. The Solution: Three Types of Sales Automation That Actually Work There are three powerful ways to automate your digital product sales: tripwires, order bumps and upsells, and email sequences. Let me break down each one and show you exactly how they work together to create a sales system that runs on autopilot. 1. Tripwires: Turn Freebie Seekers Into Buyers Instantly A tripwire is a low-cost product (usually $7-$27) that you offer immediately after someone opts in to get your free lead magnet. Here's how it works: Someone sees your content on social media → They click to download your free cheat sheet → They enter their email on your opt-in page → They land on the thank you page → Right there, they see an offer for your complete toolkit for just $17 → They click, they buy → MiloTree delivers the product automatically. You do nothing. It all happens automatically. The beauty of tripwires is that they convert freebie seekers into paying customers right away. Once someone has bought from you once, they're 9 times more likely to buy from you again. 2. Order Bumps and Upsells: Increase Average Order Value Without More Traffic Here's where things get really powerful. Someone's already buying your $47 course. At checkout, you offer a $12 complimentary workbook with one simple checkbox. They tick the box—boom, they've added it to their order. After they complete the purchase, they land on your thank you page. Now you offer them your $97 "done-for-you" premium version. With another click, they've purchased that as well. You just turned a $47 sale into a $156 sale without getting a single additional customer. Order bumps and upsells can increase your revenue by 30-50% without any additional marketing. You're simply maximizing the value of customers you're already getting. 3. Email Sequences: Build Relationships and Sell While You Sleep This is the foundation that makes everything else work. An email sequence is a series of automated emails you set up once that go out to new subscribers automatically. One of our MiloTree customers, Amanda, set up her main email sequence six months ago. That one sequence generates over $1,500 a month for her business, and she hasn't touched those emails since she initially created them. Here's what a good email automation does: Builds Relationships: Your subscribers get to know, like, and trust you through consistent communication Delivers Value: You're providing helpful content that solves their problems Sells Naturally: You're making offers that feel like helpful solutions, not pushy sales pitches Email is one of the best channels for sales. For every $1 you spend on email marketing, you typically make about $36 in return. That's a 3,600% ROI. Why You Can't Do Email Marketing Through Gmail (And What You Need Instead) Here's something crucial to understand: You cannot do email marketing through Gmail, Yahoo, or any regular email account. You need what's called an email service provider (ESP). An email service provider is a platform like MailChimp, MailerLite, Kit, or Flodesk. It's built specifically for business email marketing. Here's what ESPs do that regular email can't: Deliverability: They get your emails into people's inboxes instead of spam folders Analytics: They track who opens your emails, who clicks links, and who buys Segmentation: They let you organize subscribers based on their interests and behavior Automation: They let you set up those money-making email sequences we talked about My favorite email service provider is MailerLite. We use it ourselves for MiloTree's email marketing. I recommend it for three reasons: Free to Start: You get your first 1,000 subscribers completely free User-Friendly: It's the easiest ESP I've used—intuitive drag-and-drop design Seamless Integration: It works perfectly with MiloTree for automated product delivery MiloTree integrates with 24 email service providers, including MailChimp, Kit (formerly ConvertKit), Flodesk, ActiveCampaign, MailerLite, Klaviyo, and many others. We're always adding new integrations based on customer requests. But if you're just starting out and asking me what to try first, I'd go with MailerLite. How MiloTree and Your Email Service Provider Work Together Let me show you the exact flow of how MiloTree and your email service provider work together to automate your sales. This is where the magic happens. Here's the complete automated workflow: Step 1: Someone sees your content on Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, or your blog Step 2: You offer a lead magnet (a free download, cheat sheet, template, etc.) Step 3: They click and land on your MiloTree opt-in page where they enter their name and email Step 4: MiloTree captures that email and automatically sends it to your email service provider Step 5: MiloTree instantly delivers the freebie to your new subscriber on the thank you page—they can download it immediately Step 6: At the same time, MiloTree sends a "tag" to your email service provider Step 7: That tag triggers your automated email sequence to start Step 8: Your welcome sequence begins—usually 5-7 emails that go out over the next week Step 9: These emails build the relationship, provide value, and make offers Step 10: When someone clicks to buy, MiloTree processes the payment and delivers the product automatically You do nothing. It all runs on autopilot. The Power of Tags: How to Trigger Different Email Sequences Here's what makes this system so powerful: tags. A tag is simply a label you assign to a subscriber based on what they've downloaded or purchased. Let's say you have three different freebies: A "Social Media Content Calendar" (tagged: social-media-freebie) A "Product Launch Checklist" (tagged: launch-freebie) An "Email Marketing Guide" (tagged: email-freebie) When someone downloads your Social Media Content Calendar, MiloTree automatically tags them with "social-media-freebie" in your email service provider. That tag triggers your social media email sequence. The beauty of this system is that different freebies can trigger different email sequences. Someone interested in social media gets emails about social media. Someone interested in email marketing gets emails about email marketing. You're sending the right message to the right person at the right time—all automatically. How to Set Up Your MiloTree and Email Service Provider Integration in 2 Minutes Setting up this automation sounds complicated, but it literally takes about two minutes. Let me walk you through it step by step. Step 1: Log into your MiloTree dashboard at milotree.com Step 2: Click on "Email Integration" in the menu Step 3: Select your email service provider from the dropdown menu (MailerLite, MailChimp, Kit, etc.) Step 4: Follow the simple connection instructions—every platform is slightly different, but we have step-by-step guides for each one Step 5: Test the connection to make sure it's working That's it. Now every time someone opts into your freebie, their email automatically flows into your email service provider and triggers your automated sequence. If you have any trouble with the setup, just email me at jillian@milotree.com and I'll personally help you get it working. Your Action Plan: Set Up Your Automated Sales System Today Here's exactly what I want you to do right now to start automating your sales: First, if you don't have an email service provider yet, sign up for one. I recommend MailerLite to start because it's free for your first 1,000 subscribers and it's incredibly user-friendly. Second, sign up for MiloTree if you haven't already. Start with our free plan to test everything. You can create a freebie opt-in page for free, sell a product for free, and see how the system works. Then when you're ready to scale, upgrade to one of our paid plans to run your entire digital product business with MiloTree. Third, connect MiloTree to your email service provider using the two-minute process I outlined above. Don't worry if you get stuck—just reach out and we'll help you. Fourth, create your first lead magnet if you don't have one yet. Download my free AI prompts that will help you create an irresistible freebie in about 10 minutes: The 3 AI Prompts You Need to Create a Freebie Cheatsheet Fifth, set up your welcome email sequence. In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik sits down with Dr. Caroline Crocker to unpack what “unforgivable” feels like through a child's eyes. They explore childhood trauma, shame, grief, and the hidden ways pain rewires identity. Caroline shares a deeply personal story about her father's Holocaust-era childhood and how trauma can silently shape families for generations. You will also hear practical, grounded steps for healing, like naming one truth, finding one safe witness, and building nervous system safety without forcing a “quick fix.” This conversation is for anyone navigating PTSD, intergenerational trauma, emotional healing, and mental health recovery. About the Guest: Dr. Caroline Crocker is an international speaker, multi-genre author, and storyteller. She has a background as a microbiologist, immunologist, medical researcher, professor, nonprofit founder, and tech startup CEO. As the daughter and granddaughter of World War II survivors, she writes and speaks on trauma, survival, and how painful history can echo through families. Key Takeaways: Childhood trauma can feel “unforgivable” because kids process danger through fear, rage, numbness, and shutdown, not adult logic. Survivors often internalize blame, believing they are “unforgivable”, which fuels shame, silence, and self-sabotage. Trauma echoes through generations via learned rules like hypervigilance, food hoarding, and emotional disconnection, even when no one names the root cause. A single memory can define a lifetime, like a child being unable to save a friend, and the grief resurfacing decades later. What looks like “rebellion” or “acting out” can be an intelligent survival strategy for an unsafe home or institution. Forgiveness is framed as a practical tool for forward movement, not instant forgetting or excusing harm. Healing benefits from sharing the story with one safe witness, a friend, therapist, support group, or helpline, to break isolation and reality-check shame. Notice family beliefs you inherited, especially fear-based messages about safety, trust, or relationships, and choose new scripts. Focus on daily regulation, small moments of beauty, breath, nature, and kindness, to retrain the nervous system toward safety. One concrete next step: write one honest sentence about what still affects you, then share a small piece of it with someone safe within a week. Send us a textWhat do you need more of right now?Your brain will say: time, sleep, money, peace on earth, a functioning Epic inbox. Fair. But this week, we're naming the thing that quietly drives everything else: connection. Not “more people.” Not “more social plans.”More moments where you actually feel connected—to your people, to your purpose, and to yourself.Because you can be surrounded all day (patients, staff, family) and still feel… nothing. Or worse: irritated, numb, braced, and already mentally leaving the room while your body is still sitting there. This episode is a gentle—but very real—invitation to come back.In this episode, we talk about:Why connection is often the missing ingredient for stressed, high-functioning women physiciansThe difference between being around people and feeling connectedThe secret ingredient you can't skip: presenceHow to recognize what connection feels like in your body (not someone else's Pinterest version)Three kinds of connection to practice this week:Connection to other humansConnection to a cause/passionConnection to yourselfThe hard truth: if connection feels totally inaccessible right now, that's not a character flaw—it's a signal you need supportYour Week 9 Challenge: Micro Moments of ConnectionPick one focus area this week—don't do all three unless you genuinely want to.Connection to other humansTry one “micro moment” per day:Put the phone down, face someone, make eye contactGive a real hug (not the drive-by shoulder bump)Share one honest sentence instead of your highlight reelBe fully there for 60 seconds (yes, even at the dinner table)2. Connection to a cause or passionIf connection with people feels like… a lot right now, connect to something that matters:Contribute, participate, show up, or simply remember why you careLet your work link you to meaning (even if the system is a mess)3. Connection to yourselfThis one is underrated—and powerful:Notice your self-talk: is it kind, or is it a hostile attending who never goes off service?Try a few minutes of journaling, stillness, prayer, meditation, or a walk with no inputChoose one moment where you stop abandoning yourselfA quick reflection (do this right now)Think of a time you felt genuinely connected. Ask:What did that feel like in my body? What thoughts were present? What made that moment possible? Then choose your tiny practice for the week.Because connection isn't a grand gesture. It's a repeatable skill. You're not behindIf you're joining mid-challenge, welcome. This episode focuses on the second step of the Research Like a Pro process: creating a timeline and analyzing the sources in the ongoing quest to find the father of Cynthia (Dillard) Royston. Diana begins by detailing the research objective for this phase: to discover a candidate for Cynthia's father residing in Cass County, Georgia, during the 1830s. Diana discusses compiling a timeline for Cynthia, analyzing her census records, and explaining why she estimates Cynthia's birth year as 1815, based on her marriage and the birth of her oldest child. Nicole introduces the section on Elijah Dillard of Alabama, a possible genetic brother to Cynthia, whom Diana includes in the timeline for comparison. Diana reviews Elijah's records and estimates his birth year to be close to Cynthia's. Listeners learn how to critically evaluate conflicting ages in census records and use other family events to narrow down a probable birth year. Diana then adds the unresearched Cass County, Georgia, Dillards from the 1840 census to the timeline, identifying Elizabeth and John Dillard as the most likely parents based on their age. She notes a second Elijah Dillard in the Cass County group, which prompts her to use geographic identifiers in the timeline to distinguish the two men. Diana concludes with a source analysis of the federal census records, discussing their value as original records and the difference between direct evidence and undetermined information. She also observes that the proximity of John, William, and Elijah in the 1840 census district suggests a connection, while Elizabeth's location requires further research. Listeners see how to use timelines to organize existing research and how initial record analysis can lead to new research questions. This summary was generated by Google Gemini. In this Healthy Mind, Healthy Life episode, host Charu sits down with Matt Johnson to unpack how hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) can help people clear PTSD, anxiety, emotional baggage, and subconscious programming that keeps life stuck on autopilot. Matt shares his real-life recovery story after a severe brain injury and a PTSD diagnosis, then breaks down why many people don't get lasting results when they only work with the conscious mind. If you're tired of surface-level self-help, this conversation gets straight into practical tools, mindset rewiring, and what real healing looks like when you upgrade the “operating system” running your behaviors, habits, and reactions. About the Guest: Matt Johnson is a hypnosis and NLP specialist who helps people shift subconscious patterns behind anxiety, trauma responses, limiting beliefs, and emotional overwhelm. After years of struggling with PTSD and a brain injury, he built a practical approach to healing by combining hypnosis, NLP, and deep research into subconscious change. Key Takeaways: A brain injury can be amplified by unresolved trauma responses, especially when PTSD keeps the nervous system locked in fight or flight. Matt's turning point came after a SPECT scan showed abnormal brain activity patterns linked to PTSD, not permanent tissue damage. Many people get limited progress when they only use talk therapy or medication, because most change requires working with the subconscious mind. The subconscious can run automatic “programs” that shape habits, stress responses, and relationship reactions without conscious permission. Hypnosis is not mind control. You can accept or reject suggestions at any time, even in deep trance. NLP can create fast shifts by giving emotions a “structure” (color, shape, direction) and then changing that structure intentionally. “You're not broken” is not a quote for the wall. It's a strategy shift from identity blame to pattern change. Early-life imprinting (roughly ages 0–7) can install beliefs that feel like truth, but they are editable with the right tools. Real healing looks like removing the root patterns so the same stress does not keep returning in new forms. If traditional routes are not working, it's logical to diversify approaches and build a roadmap that actually fits you. How Listeners Can Connect with the Guest: Matt Johnson NLP Free course: NLP Mind Magic (includes exercises for anxiety, procrastination, imposter syndrome, and more). You know exactly what you should eat. You know you need eight hours of sleep. You know you should move your body. Yet here you are at 10 PM with a pint of ice cream, wondering why you can follow through on work deadlines and family responsibilities but can't stick to your own health goals. The disconnect isn't about willpower—it's about how you talk to yourself when things don't go according to plan. This week, I'm breaking down how to have actual peace during the holidays with your weight loss goals—not the fake "I'll start in January" peace that's really just procrastination wrapped in holiday lights. You'll discover why your approach to failure determines everything about whether you'll succeed, how the same encouragement you'd give a five-year-old learning to tie shoes is exactly what you need to give yourself, and why your battlefield-like inner self-talk is the real reason you sabotage your own goals. I'll share Brené Brown's marble jar concept and how I adapted it for building self-trust with urges, plus my own vulnerable story about catching myself in diet mentality last Friday even after years of doing this work. Tune in as I walk you through the three pillars of peaceful goal-setting: making goals with possibility instead of fear, understanding the real science of how your brain and body connect, and implementing practical strategies that actually create change. You'll learn why 99% of diets fail (and why beating yourself up guarantees you'll be part of that statistic), discover the power of accountability partnerships inside my program, and understand why all the Pinterest boards and saved recipes in the world won't create permanent change without addressing your unique baggage. Ready to stop saying "I'll start in January" and actually mean it? My January course starting January 9th teaches you how to make goals without the failure spiral, or join my lifetime membership program for ongoing support and accountability. Details are HERE! What You'll Learn in this Episode: How your experience with failure shapes your ability to make goals The five-year-old shoe-tying analogy: when did you stop letting yourself learn? Why your inner dialogue sounds like screaming at a child (and how to stop) The connection between Christmas anticipation and post-holiday letdown How negative self-talk creates procrastination, people-pleasing, and perfectionism Brené Brown's marble jar concept adapted for building self-trust with urges Why feelings only come from thoughts (even when circumstances feel urgent) Peace-building thoughts: "I can do hard things" and "I haven't figured this out yet" Dara's vulnerable Friday story: catching diet mentality after years of coaching Why 99% of diets fail and how to be in the 1% The power of accountability partners and real-time coaching Why Pinterest boards and saved recipes won't create permanent change How program connections help women through devastating losses Stay in touch! This week we're diving into one of my favourite topics: systems. If quantity is the outer layer of the onion, systems are the next layer in. Maybe you've decluttered and reduced your possessions, but something still isn't working. You look around and think, I've kept the right things… so why does my home still feel hard? That's a classic systems problem.A systems problem shows up when items don't have clear homes, when tidying feels complicated, or when things you genuinely need end up in piles on every flat surface. It's not about too much stuff anymore — it's about giving what you do have a simple, logical place to live. The good news? Systems problems are fun to solve. This is where organising comes in — not the Pinterest-perfect, colour-coded kind (unless that brings you joy), but the functional, sustainable kind that's easy for your whole household to follow. When a system works, tidying stops feeling like a battle and starts feeling like… well, life just flowing.I always come back to three organising foundations:1. Like with like. Keep similar items together. It saves you time, brainpower, and frustration. No more chargers in eight different rooms.2. Set limits. Containers — drawers, baskets, shelves — help you define “how much is enough.” Limits create boundaries that keep systems working over time.3. A home for everything. If you can answer “Where does this belong?” you've solved 80% of your systems problem.Once these are in place, your home becomes easier to use, easier to tidy, and easier to enjoy. So if you've decluttered and you're still feeling stuck, you're likely in the systems stage. And that's a beautiful place to be — because from here, everything starts to click.Next week, we'll talk about maintenance and how habits keep your space working long-term.You may also like to listen to these episodes:What's Your Problem?... Is 19 Too Young To Be a Police Officer? A Florida, USA Perspective on Trauma Impact and PTSD. Special Episode. At just 19 years old, Michael A. Laidler was already wearing a badge and responding to some of the most intense calls a police officer can face. Sworn in as a police officer in Tallahassee, Florida, USA, his early entry into law enforcement placed him on the front lines at an age when most of his peers were still navigating college life or their first civilian jobs. The question at the heart of this Special Episode is simple, yet deeply complex: Is 19 too young to be a police officer? Look for The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. Michael's story, shared through the Podcast available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and most major podcast platforms, offers a rare firsthand look at how early exposure to trauma can shape both a career and a life. “At 19, I thought I was ready,” Michael reflects. “I passed the tests, I met the requirements, but nothing truly prepares you for repeated exposure to trauma at that age.” Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . Trauma at the Start of a Career Early in his career, Michael encountered extreme stress and traumatic incidents that would leave lasting impressions. He recounts two particularly disturbing events that occurred while he was still a teenager in uniform, experiences that many officers don't face until years into the job. Is 19 Too Young To Be a Police Officer? A Florida, USA Perspective on Trauma Impact and PTSD. Special Episode. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and other podcast platforms. “You don't just see trauma,” he explains. “You absorb it. And when you're that young, it hits differently.” These experiences didn't just affect his work performance; they influenced his personal life, emotional regulation, and long-term career decisions. Like many officers of his generation, Michael says there was little discussion about mental health, PTSD, or the long-term Trauma Impact on young officers. “Back then, the mindset was to tough it out,” he says. “You handled it the best you could, often without the tools or language to understand what was happening inside.” The Science Behind Age and Trauma In the United States, the minimum age to become a police officer typically ranges from 18 to 21, depending on the state and department. Florida is unique in that it sets the minimum age for sworn law enforcement officers at 19 years old, while corrections officers may be hired at 18. However some agencies have higher minimum ages. Research suggests that while 18 and 19-year-olds possess adult-level reasoning abilities, the brain, particularly the prefrontal cortex responsible for impulse control, emotional regulation, and decision-making, continues to develop well into the early 20s. This ongoing development may make younger officers more vulnerable to the effects of repeated traumatic exposure. Is 19 Too Young To Be a Police Officer? A Florida, USA Perspective on Trauma Impact and PTSD. Special Episode. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Studies cited by the National Institutes of Health indicate that trauma exposure can double the risk of major depressive disorder and is a key criterion for developing PTSD. Adolescents and young adults may be especially susceptible, as trauma can intersect with critical stages of identity formation and emotional development. “You're still becoming who you are,” Michael notes. “When trauma gets layered onto that process, it can redirect your entire path.” Florida Standards and the Bigger Debate Under Florida Statute 943.13, individuals seeking certification as law enforcement officers must meet strict criteria, including U.S. citizenship, a high school diploma or GED, good moral character, and a clean criminal history. In cities like Miami, applicants must be at least 19 years old to apply. The interview can be found on The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and across most podcast platforms where listeners will find authentic law enforcement stories. While these standards ensure legal and ethical readiness, they don't fully address developmental readiness or long-term mental health outcomes. Critics argue that agencies should more seriously consider age, maturity, and access to trauma-informed support systems when hiring young officers. According to broader research, trauma experienced during sensitive developmental periods may carry a higher risk for long-term psychological effects, including PTSD, substance abuse, and relationship difficulties, especially if left untreated. Is 19 Too Young To Be a Police Officer? A Florida, USA Perspective on Trauma Impact and PTSD. Special Episode. Turning Pain Into Purpose Today, Michael A. Laidler uses his experiences to help others. His career path ultimately shifted toward leadership development and training, driven by a desire to support officers before trauma defines them. “If sharing my story helps even one young officer recognize the signs of PTSD or seek help earlier, then it's worth it,” he says. The full podcast episode is streaming now on their website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. This Special Episode isn't just about age requirements or policy, it's about people, development, and the hidden costs of early exposure to trauma in law enforcement. As the conversation continues across News, Podcast, and social media platforms, Michael's story adds an essential human perspective to the ongoing debate. “Nineteen isn't too young to care,” Michael concludes. “But it might be too young to carry trauma alone.” Listeners can tune in on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and most every major Podcast platform and follow updates on Facebook, Instagram, and other major News outlets. Hey y'all ! Welcome to another Friday with CWCOI ! In this week's episode, our host, Ally Yost talks about modesty. Ally touched on this topic once before, but she wanted to record an updated version and share how we can dress and display ourselves in a way that is modest and biblically sound. "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!"
