A Life of Service, A Line-of-Duty Death On April 12, 2024, Officer Ross Bartlett was conducting a traffic stop on southbound Highway 77, just south of Ceresco, Nebraska. He was seated in his patrol car when a pickup truck struck his vehicle from behind, forcing it into the car he had stopped. Bystanders immediately rushed in, attempting life-saving measures. Officer Bartlett was airlifted to Bryan Health West Campus, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the stopped vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Most nutrition debates revolve around the wrong questions: Should we eat vegetables or not? Grains or no grains? Animal-based or plant-based? But as I discuss in this episode, framing nutrition solely by food categories overlooks the single most crucial factor: food quality.  Modern debates often miss that eggs aren't simply eggs, grains aren't just grains, and vegetables aren't uniformly nutritious. The way food is grown, raised, processed, and prepared makes an enormous difference — far greater than the simplified categories we typically argue about. I had this realization vividly when comparing an airport lounge breakfast in Atlanta to one in Norway. On the surface, both offered similar categories of foods – eggs, meat, fruit, yogurt — but the underlying reality was starkly different. One was laden with industrial additives, pesticides and inflammatory oils, while the other represented cleaner sourcing and superior quality. In practical terms, I've learned it's often simpler to cut out entire food groups than to consistently source high-quality versions within them.  Avoiding grains or poultry entirely can sometimes yield better health outcomes than struggling to find properly raised, chemical-free options.  Real health doesn't live in nutrition dogma but in understanding nuance. The same food can either support your metabolic health or quietly undermine it, entirely depending on how it was produced.  In other words, sometimes quality matters more than category. Hispanoamérica se encuentra en estos momentos inmersa en un cambio de ciclo político marcado por un desplazamiento del electorado hacia la derecha. Este fenómeno, todo un "pendulazo" conservador, tuvo su punto de partida simbólico con la llegada de Javier Milei a la presidencia de Argentina a finales de 2023. Desde entonces, esta región ha encadenado una serie de victorias de candidatos de derechas que prometen orden, seguridad y más libertad económica. Sus nombres se han ido acumulando en los últimos dos años: Daniel Noboa en Ecuador, Rodrigo Paz en Bolivia tras dos décadas de dominio del MAS, José Antonio Kast en Chile, Nasry Asfura en Honduras y, hace solo unos días, Laura Fernández en Costa Rica. Este vuelco político responde a un cansancio generalizado hacia la clase política y a problemas estructurales que los gobiernos de izquierda que han sido saliendo no lograron resolver. Los ciudadanos han utilizado las urnas para castigar el deterioro de la seguridad, impulsado por el narcotráfico y la violencia de las pandillas, así como el estancamiento económico y una inflación que en algunos países no da tregua. Además, el colapso de la Venezuela chavista, que fue el referente durante veinte años, ha erosionado el atractivo de las ideas de izquierda. En este escenario la propuesta de "mano dura" contra el crimen y la reducción del aparato estatal ha encontrado un terreno fértil. Un factor determinante en este nuevo mapa político es la influencia de Donald Trump desde la Casa Blanca. El gobierno estadounidense está ejerciendo una notable presión diplomática y financiera, premia a los Gobiernos alineados con sus intereses y presiona a aquellos que mantienen relaciones estrechas con China. Presidentes como Bukele, Milei y Noboa han capitalizado su sintonía con el trumpismo. Además, la reciente caída de Maduro en Venezuela ha reforzado la percepción de que Estados Unidos está dispuesto a intervenir de forma directa o indirecta para recuperar su influencia histórica en el continente. Pero esta alineación ideológica tiene un límite infranqueable: la dependencia económica de China. A diferencia de lo que ocurría en el siglo XX, Estados Unidos ya no es el socio comercial dominante para gran parte de Sudamérica. Países como Brasil y Chile exportan mucho más a China que a EEUU, algo que ni los presidentes más alineados con el trumpismo pueden ignorar sin arriesgarse a un suicidio económico. Incluso figuras como Milei, a pesar de que se prodiga en buenos gestos hacia Trump, sabe que necesita estar a buenas con los chinos si quiere que sus políticas de apertura económica den los frutos esperados. De este modo, aunque Hispanoamérica parece decidida a adoptar modelos de derecha en otros ámbitos, en el de la economía seguirá vinculada a China. El éxito de esta nueva ola conservadora dependerá de su capacidad para ofrecer resultados tangibles en seguridad y empleo. En una rueda de prensa que concedió nada más hacerse públicos los documentos aseguró que se había cumplido estrictamente con la ley y que no se estaba protegiendo a nadie, tampoco al presidente. Pero, como era de esperar, las críticas no han tardado en arreciar. Unos creen que las ediciones sobre los textos y las imágenes son demasiado agresivas y ocultan importante material que debería ser público. Otros denuncian que se ha revelado indebidamente la identidad de al menos 43 víctimas. El dólar estadounidense atraviesa un periodo de debilidad, acaba de alcanzar su nivel más bajo en casi cuatro años. Esta situación, lejos de ser un accidente, es el resultado de una estrategia deliberada del presidente Donald Trump, que considera que una moneda devaluada es una herramienta imprescindible para impulsar la competitividad de las empresas estadounidenses en el extranjero. Pero lo que el gobierno presenta como una ventaja estratégica podría comprometer la estabilidad de la mayor economía del mundo ya que genera efectos secundarios que afectan al consumo, la inflación y la confianza en las instituciones. La caída ha sido notable: hace solo un año el dólar rozaba la paridad con el euro, mientras que hoy apenas se cambia por 83 céntimos. Este desplome fue a más tras unas declaraciones de Trump en las que decía que la debilidad del dólar era algo netamente positivo. A esto se suma un clima de caos político marcado por varios terremotos que han ido produciéndose en los últimos meses, desde los elevados de aranceles a socios históricos como la Unión Europea, Canadá y Corea del Sur, a disputas territoriales como la intención de anexionarse Groenlandia, que forma parte de un aliado de la OTAN. Estas acciones han erosionado la confianza de los inversores, que están buscando refugio en activos como el oro, que ha disparado su precio por encima de los 5.000 dólares la onza ante la cuestionable gestión del Tesoro y las presiones sobre la Reserva Federal. A pesar del optimismo que muestra Trump, la estructura de la economía estadounidense invita a pensar que un dólar debilitado no es la solución idónea. Las exportaciones representan apenas el 11% del PIB de EEUU, lo que significa que el 90% restante de la economía se verá perjudicado por el encarecimiento de las importaciones. Una moneda devaluada se traduce en una inflación mayor y menos margen para que la Reserva Federal reduzca los tipos de interés. Además, existen barreras no monetarias que impiden que las exportaciones crezcan solo por el precio; por ejemplo, la falta de demanda en Europa y Japón de los productos industriales estadounidenses o las diferencias regulatorias que dificultan la entrada de ciertos productos en otros mercados. Un problema crítico es la dependencia de insumos extranjeros. Muchas industrias exportadoras, como la aeroespacial y la petrolera, necesitan componentes importados que ahora son más caros debido a la devaluación y a los nuevos aranceles. Esto volatiliza los beneficios de competir por precio. El mundo, además, está reaccionando: la Unión Europea, por ejemplo, ha acelerado la firma de acuerdos comerciales con India y el Mercosur para proteger sus inversiones y reducir su exposición al dólar. En última instancia, el valor del dólar funciona como un referéndum sobre la confianza global en Estados Unidos. La cancelación de las jornadas “1936: la guerra que todos perdimos” en Sevilla ha reabierto un debate que los españoles parecemos incapaces de cerrar. Lo que debía haber sido un encuentro intelectual coordinado por Arturo Pérez-Reverte, ha terminado en polémica tras la renuncia del escritor David Uclés. Decidió darse de baja del evento por la presencia en el mismo de José María Aznar e Iván Espinosa de los Monteros. Uclés considera que no es cierto que la guerra la perdiésemos todos, de hecho el se tiene entre los perdedores. El hecho es que hay un realidad biológica ineludible: la Guerra Civil es ya pasado absoluto. No hay un solo español vivo que combatiese en la guerra. Los soldados más jóvenes, los de la llamada, “quinta del biberón”, hoy tendrían más de 105 años y sólo quedan unas 500 personas en España que superen esa edad, casi todas mujeres que no combatieron. Ya no queda apenas memoria viva, por lo que las causas, el desarrollo y las consecuencias de la guerra son ya trabajo de los historiadores. Pero la política y el activismo que la sirve insiste en resucitar dos bandos enfrentados en un país que, por lo demás, es muy distinto al de los años 30. La España de 1936 era un país menos poblado, mucho más joven, pobre y rural. Uno cada tres ciudadanos era analfabeto y la esperanza de vida rozaba los 50 años. La España de aquella época nos es muy extraña y difícilmente la reconoceríamos. Intentar traérsela al presente es un anacronismo que sólo sirve a quienes viven de la discordia y el enfrentamiento para obtener réditos políticos y, en demasiadas ocasiones, también económicos. Pero eso no puede cambiar lo esencial: los españoles de hoy no somos responsables de lo que hicieron nuestros antepasados. Ni ganamos ni perdimos en 1936, del mismo modo que ni conquistamos América ni luchamos en Lepanto. Heredamos los genes y parte de la cultura de nuestros ancestros, pero no la culpa de lo que hicieron. Revivir la guerra en términos de victoria o derrota solo sirve a quienes buscan hacerse con el poder (o retenerlo) agitando heridas que los propios protagonistas, en un ejercicio de generosidad, decidieron cerrar hace ya muchos años. Tras la desaparición del imperio romano en Gran Bretaña la isla cayó en manos de un conjunto de pueblos llegados de la Europa continental, fundamentalmente de lo que hoy es Alemania y Dinamarca. Estos pueblos de origen germánico, los anglos, los sajones y los jutos, se apoderaron paulatinamente de la antigua Britannia romana, donde se encontraron con una población local, los britanos, que estaba tibiamente romanizada. Siempre se creyó que la invasión había sido violenta y se materializó desplazando a los britanos. Esta idea tan bien asentada y glosada por las crónicas de aquella época, entre ellas la de Beda el Venerable, ha evolucionado a raíz de los descubrimientos de la arqueología moderna. Fue un proceso mucho más orgánico y tranquilo en el curso del cual las distintas tribus se fueron colonizando el territorio y asimilando a los britanos. Conforme estos grupos se asentaron, la geografía política de la isla se fragmentó en una serie de reinos rivales conocidos como la Heptarquía. Estos reinos eran Northumbria, Mercia, Anglia Oriental, Essex, Kent, Sussex y Wessex. Este periodo fue una era de guerreros y jefes tribales, pero también el escenario de una de las conversiones al cristianismo más famosas de la historia de Europa. Los germanos abandonaron el paganismo y se pasaron en masa a la iglesia de Roma. En ello tuvo mucho que ver la llegada de la misión gregoriana a Kent en el año 597 y la influencia de las iglesias celtas desde el norte. Aquello marcó un renacimiento cultural que floreció especialmente en los monasterios. Fue en estos centros donde se preservó el conocimiento clásico y donde surgieron obras maestras de la literatura y el arte, como el poema épico Beowulf y los manuscritos iluminados que fusionaban la estética entrelazada germánica con la simbología cristiana. La estructura social anglosajona estaba rígidamente jerarquizada. A la cabeza estaba el rey y su séquito de nobles guerreros, conocidos como “thegns”, que estaban vinculados al monarca por lazos de lealtad personal. Debajo de ellos, la gran mayoría de la población estaba compuesta por los “ceorls”, hombres libres que cultivaban la tierra y formaban la base de la economía, que en la Gran Bretaña de entonces era eminentemente agraria. Esta relativa estabilidad se vio sacudida a finales del siglo VIII con la aparición de una nueva amenaza: las incursiones vikingas. Los ataques escandinavos desmantelaron casi todos los reinos anglosajones. Sólo quedó el de Wessex como último bastión de resistencia con el rey Alfredo el Grande a su cabeza. Alfredo detuvo el avance danés y emprendió ambiciosas reformas educativas y militares. Con los sucesores de Alfredo, especialmente el rey Athelstan, se consolidó por primera vez la idea de una Inglaterra unificada, la llamada “Englaland”. Este periodo de madurez política vio el desarrollo de instituciones administrativas algo más complejas, como el consejo de sabios o Witan, y la división territorial en condados o shires. A pesar de la conquista normanda en 1066, que marcó el fin de la era anglosajona, el legado de este pueblo perduró en el idioma inglés antiguo, en el sistema legal de derecho consuetudinario y en una estructura parroquial que sobreviviría durante siglos, lo que vendría a demostrar que los anglosajones no fueron simples invasores, sino los padres de lo que terminaría siendo Inglaterra. La semana pasada Donald Trump se presentó en el Foro de Davos con un anuncio que nadie se esperaba: el nacimiento del Consejo de la Paz, un nuevo organismo internacional que se encargará de velar por la paz en el mundo. El nombre era familiar para los asistentes ya que ese consejo existe, pero con una misión algo distinta. Nació en noviembre del año pasado con un mandato específico del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU: el de supervisar la reconstrucción y la desmilitarización de Gaza. Pero el presidente de EEUU lo ha transformado en algo mucho más ambicioso que, en la práctica, podría llegar a sustituir a la propia ONU. El nuevo consejo no solo servirá para encargarse de Gaza hasta que todo se normalice, Trump pretende que se convierta en una institución permanente en la que estén representados los Estados que quieran sumarse a él. La estructura del organismo refleja la visión personalista de Trump: ejerce como presidente ejecutivo con plenos poderes, derecho a veto y un mandato vitalicio que va más allá de su permanencia en la Casa Blanca. Pero su característica más insólita es su modelo de financiación. Está concebido casi como un club de golf. Los tres primeros años serán gratuitos, a partir de ahí los gobiernos tendrán que abonar mil millones de dólares para asegurarse una plaza permanente. La idea ha atraído ya a unos 25 países, entre ellos Arabia Saudita, Egipto, Turquía y Argentina, lo que viene a demostrar que el acceso directo a Trump pesa más que las alianzas tradicionales. La reacción internacional pone de manifiesto la fragilidad de bloques como los BRICS, que se han mostrado incapaces de ofrecer una respuesta unificada. El brasileño Lula da Silva ha sido el crítico más feroz. Otras potencias como China o la India se han decantado por la cautela para evitarse problemas y represalias comerciales en forma de aranceles. En el Kremlin, por su parte, miran desde la barrera con algo de suspicacia ya que este nuevo foro diluye el poder que Rusia tiene en la ONU desde el final de la segunda guerra mundial. Aún así, Putin ha fingido cierto interés para no complicar su relación con Trump. El éxito inicial de este Consejo de la Paz radica en que ha aprovechado el fracaso en Gaza tanto de la ONU como de los países musulmanes. Trump consiguió que el Consejo de Seguridad entregase su autoridad a una sola persona que ha entendido a la perfección hasta dónde puede expandirse. Eso sí, a Trump sólo le quedan tres años en el poder, cuando lo abandone es improbable que el resto de líderes mundiales sigan tratando de complacerle. A largo plazo seguramente no funcione esta iniciativa, pero a corto si que lo está haciendo. En última instancia este proyecto de Trump desmonta la idea de un "sur global" unido por su oposición a Estados Unidos. También demuestra que los BRICS son una coalición heterogénea e inestable frente a la hegemonía del dólar y el poder duro de Estados Unidos. El orden mundial se está redibujando no mediante consensos diplomáticos, sino a través del frío cálculo del interés nacional y la conveniencia económica. Aunque la viabilidad del Consejo de la Paz a largo plazo es incierta, su mera existencia ya ha roto el mito de la resistencia frente a Estados Unidos, dejando claro que, ante la oferta de Trump, la mayoría de los Gobiernos prefiere no significarse.
