La semana pasada Donald Trump sorprendió al anunciar el indulto al expresidente hondureño Juan Orlando Hernández, condenado a 45 años por narcotráfico. Se encargó de anunciarlo personalmente a través de Truth Social con una calurosa felicitación. Esto ocurrió dos días antes de las elecciones presidenciales en Honduras, que se celebraron el pasado día 30, lo que provocó cierto estupor entre los hondureños. Hernández, presidente del país entre 2014 y 2022, fue condenado el año pasado por un tribunal de Nueva York por colaborar con cárteles de la droga para introducir cientos de toneladas de cocaína en EEUU a cambio de sobornos millonarios. Honduras, en el corazón de la ruta centroamericana del narcotráfico, se transformó de este modo en tiempos de Hernández en un narcoestado. Las investigaciones de la DEA demostraron que recibió dinero en cooperación con familiares y altos cargos policiales para permitir el tránsito de drogas. No es la primera vez que sucede. El panameño Manuel Noriega y el guatemalteco Alfonso Portillo ya fueron juzgados y condenados en Estados Unidos hace años. El indulto de Hernández ha sido especialmente llamativo ya que se produjo en la recta final de la campaña electoral, una campaña en la que Trump manifestó su preferencia por uno de los candidatos, Tito Asfura, un conservador del Partido Nacional (el mismo de Hernández) y exalcalde de Tegucigalpa. Dijo de él que es “el único verdadero amigo de la Libertad en Honduras” y condicionó la ayuda estadounidense a su victoria. Durante su primer mandato Trump mantuvo una muy buena relación con Hernández, un político muy astuto que durante sus años en la presidencia se trabajó buenos contactos entre los políticos de Washington y los empresarios e inversores estadounidenses de California. A estos últimos les ofreció zonas especiales dentro del país que tendrían unas condiciones favorables para facilitar la inversión. Algunas se llegaron a poner el marcha, pero aquel esquema, denominado ZEDE, se interrumpió con la llegada de la izquierdista Xiomara Castro al poder en 2022. La investigación sobre las actividades ilícitas de Hernández había comenzado años antes, en la época de Obama, y continuó con Trump. Extraditado en 2022 tras dejar el poder, cumplía su condena en un penal de Virginia Occidental. El indulto, gestado en Mar-a-Lago, ha sido el resultado final de una campaña muy intensa de cabildeo que encabezó Roger Stone, el famoso consultor político y confidente personal de Trump. Stone persuadió al presidente de que sería a un golpe para Castro y mejoraría la suerte de los inversores estadounidenses en Honduras. El hecho es que Hernández ya era muy impopular en Honduras y allí no ha terminado de entenderse. Tampoco en Estados Unidos, donde muchos ven en esto una contradicción ya que, por un lado, está sitiando a Maduro tras acusarle de narcotráfico, mientras que, por otro, indulta a un narcotraficante condenado. Todo en medio de unas elecciones que están resultando mucho más difíciles y divisivas de lo que se esperaba. As a retired Baltimore Police Sergeant, I use the word intentionally and unapologetically. Growing up in the job, cop was always a compliment. It was what fellow cops called you when they knew you were reliable, when they trusted you to show up, back them up, and do the work. It was never whispered as an insult or tossed around in a derogatory way. It was a term of respect shared among people who understood exactly what the job demanded. A Word Big Enough for the Whole Profession One of the greatest misconceptions about law enforcement is the idea that it's a single job with a single title. In reality, it's a massive profession made up of countless roles: Police Officers, Deputy Sheriffs, State Troopers, Highway Patrol, Game Wardens, Wildlife Officers, Park Rangers, Corrections Officers, Probation and Parole Officers, Federal Agents, and many more. Each agency has its own mission, culture, and rank structure: Officer, Agent, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Chief. Titles and ranks matter in this profession because they're earned. It cuts across agencies, uniforms, patches, and ranks without erasing them. Whether someone works urban streets, rural highways, a jail tier, or a federal task force, “cop” recognizes the shared commitment to a job most people wouldn't last a week doing. What “Cop” Really Means on the Inside Among those who lived the job, being called a cop meant something very specific: you actually did the work. That behavior didn't just burden coworkers, it hurt the community by reducing real response and proactive policing. A cop, what our old-timers called “real police”, was different. A cop showed up. A cop backed their partners without hesitation. A cop stepped into chaos, took responsibility, and handled business when it mattered. The job wasn't about comfort, popularity, or fast promotions. The Fake Outrage Over Language Every so often, usually on social media, someone erupts in outrage when I use the word cop. What's telling isn't just the anger, but where it's aimed. When a headline reads A COP WAS SHOT and someone ignores the violence to lecture about terminology, priorities are clearly misplaced. Fixating on language while glossing over criminal violence raises serious questions about motive and intent. Outrage over vocabulary is easy. El documento dedica tres páginas a criticar al continente como una potencia “en decadencia”, que ha cedido su soberanía a una Unión Europea a la que acusa de estar acabando con la democracia y la libertad política. Asegura también que Europa está sufriendo una “eliminación civilizatoria” a causa de la inmigración ilegal. Según la Casa Blanca, en apenas dos décadas varios países europeos podrían tener una mayoría no europea, lo que los convertiría en aliados “no confiables” y, por lo tanto, en una amenaza para la seguridad estadounidense. Este lenguaje reproduce casi literalmente el discurso que el vicepresidente J.D. Vance pronunció en la Conferencia de Seguridad de Múnich a principios de este año. En aquel momento reprendió a los líderes europeos por su gestión migratoria y por, supuestamente, perseguir a los partidos “patriotas”. La Casa Blanca publicó la semana pasada la nueva Estrategia de Seguridad Nacional, un documento que marca un giro radical respecto a la política exterior estadounidense de las últimas ocho décadas. Su principio rector es el “America First” sin contemplaciones: Estados Unidos solo intervendrá en el mundo cuando sus intereses vitales estén directamente amenazados, abandonando de este modo el papel de policía del mundo que ha desempeñado desde el final de la guerra fría. El texto critica abiertamente el orden mundial acaudillado por EEUU desde 1945 y da por buenas ideas antes consideradas marginales. Habla, por ejemplo, de un colapso de la civilización occidental (pero solo en Europa), del “gran reemplazo” demográfico europeo y de la necesidad de restaurar la identidad occidental del continente. Por ello anuncia un apoyo explícito a los partidos identitarios europeos y celebra su auge como un “motivo de gran optimismo”. En Estados Unidos vincula la seguridad nacional con la natalidad e insiste en la importancia de “familias sólidas y tradicionales” para la “revitalización espiritual y cultural” del país. En América revive la Doctrina Monroe con un “corolario Trump” que declara el hemisferio occidental zona exclusiva de influencia estadounidense. Quieren mantener alejadas del continente a otras potencias como China y priorizan frenar la inmigración ilegal y el narcotráfico mediante alianzas regionales, despliegues militares en la frontera y, si es necesario, uso de la fuerza contra los cárteles. Las líneas entre diplomacia y negocios quedan un tanto difuminadas: todas las embajadas deben impulsar contratos para las empresas estadounidenses. En Asia el adversario es China con quien pretenden alcanzar un reequilibrio económico. Para ello pide a sus aliados en oriente y occidente que dejen de comprar productos chinos. También les exigen que movilicen todos sus activos financieros contra China pero siempre subordinándose a los intereses estadounidenses. Respecto a Taiwán mantiene cierta ambigüedad estratégica aunque rechaza cambios unilaterales en el statu quo. Para Europa el documento reserva sus peores dardos. Consolidan la tendencia de transferir progresivamente la carga de defensa a los propios europeos. Al mismo tiempo lamenta la “desaparición de la civilización” europea por la baja natalidad, la pérdida de identidad, la censura y las políticas migratorias laxas. En el tema ucraniano acusan a la UE de tener expectativas “poco realistas”, de ignorar el deseo mayoritario de paz y de subvertir la democracia. Propone también acabar con la percepción de una OTAN en “perpetua expansión”. En Oriente Medio abandonan la difusión de la democracia y los cambios de régimen. Aceptan a las monarquías del Golfo tal y como son y contemplan esa parte del mundo con cierto optimismo. Algo similar a lo de África, a la que despacha en sólo tres párrafos. Una aproximación meramente transaccional en la que se pase de la ayuda al desarrollo al comercio y la inversión con aquellos países que abran sus mercados a las empresas estadounidenses.
