Summer phone season kicks off with Samsung's latest launch. Jake, Vee, and Allison talk about Samsung's new lineup of foldables, including the very thin new Z Fold 7 and Allison's disdain for the Z Flip 7 FE. Vee has impressions of Samsung's new Galaxy Watch 8 lineup and its squircle-y new redesign. Then, it's time to talk Big Tech shakeups. Apple's COO is leaving, Zuckerberg is buying himself an AI dream team, X's CEO is out — and its chatbot Grok is on a rampage. Finally, big things are in store for the Lightning Round… which shall henceforth be known as the THUNDER ROUND. Lots to talk about, including Lorde's CD problems, Apple's Liquid Glass changes, and HBO Max finally becoming HBO Max again. Martin Mawyer is president of Christian Action Network. Martin began his career as a journalist for the Religion Today news syndicate and as the Washington news correspondent for Moody Monthly magazine. In 1990 he founded the Christian Action Network. As Jim opened this edition of Crosstalk, he noted a just-released Newsmax story that someone used Artificial Intelligence-powered software to imitate Secretary of State Marco Rubio's voice and writing style in contacting foreign ministers, a U.S. governor and a member of Congress. It's thought that the offender was likely attempting to manipulate powerful government officials with the goal of gaining access to information or accounts. So exactly where is Artificial Intelligence (AI) going and into whose hands is it falling? If you haven't been concerned up to this point, consider that just recently Mark Zuckerberg announced the creation of META Super Intelligence Labs to propel the advancement from Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) to Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI). ASI can hack into any system in existence such as water treatment systems. It can also break codes or even come up with biological weapons. However, what's even more concerning is his desire to make this open source. This means that anyone would have access to this super intelligence machine, and if they choose to, they could remove any human life parameters that are part of it in order to pursue unlawful goals.

The AI Wedge: It's as Painful as it Sounds

    Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 7, 2025 43:18

So what, exactly, is the AI wedge? According to Ewan Morrison, author of For Emma, an already acclaimed novel about our dystopian biotech future, it means a “V-shaped” force that starts small but gradually drives people apart, replacing human connection with technological mediation."It starts off really small. You end up with something like internet dating... it begins as a novelty and then people become dependent on it," Morrison explains. What seemed harmless in the 1990s has evolved to the point where 60-70% of people now use dating apps, with younger generations saying they "don't wanna meet anyone outside of using an app because they don't trust anyone." But the wedge doesn't stop there. The final stage, Morrison warns, is the replacement of the humans completely by AI friends, partners, even therapists. The metaphor captures how each technological "solution" creates new dependencies while eroding our capacity for direct human interaction. As Morrison puts it, technology "removes that sort of tactile sense that humorous, trusting, improvisatory, make do sense that we have when we deal face to face with people." Morrison notes that "for some, it's easier. It's easier to have an AI friend because it's always going to tell you, you're wonderful." This highlights how the wedge works not just through dependency, but through the seductive appeal of artificial relationships that never require the messy, challenging work of real human connection.1. AI is Pure Hype, Not a Real Revolution"I think you just have to break it down and look at AI from a PR perspective and see what we were promised. We were promised human level AI by Marvin Minsky in 1970... And I think we're seeing the same cycle happening again."Morrison argues we're experiencing the third "AI winter" - a pattern of overpromising and eventual collapse that's repeated since the 1970s.2. The AI Wedge Drives Human Separation"They're a bit like a wedge, like a V-shaped wedge... So it starts off really small... and then the final stage of that wedge is the replacement of the humans completely by Mark Zuckerberg's AI friends, by AI partners, AI therapists, these human surrogates."Technology gradually separates us from authentic human connection through a three-stage process: novelty, dependency, replacement.3. Neuralink Represents Dangerous Human Experimentation"When it's a dirty operating table with surgical glue being squeezed into your skull as electronic treads have shaken themselves loose from deep in your brain... then it starts to become a different story entirely."Morrison warns that Silicon Valley's "move fast and break things" mentality becomes morally problematic when applied to human bodies and brains.4. We Shouldn't Ask AI Life's Big Questions"The tragedy that I'm trying to put forward in the book is that we shouldn't give that big question to computers to answer. We shouldn't ask AI, why are we alive?"His novel For Emma explores the danger of outsourcing fundamental human questions about meaning and purpose to artificial intelligence.5. The Utilitarian vs. Romantic Struggle Continues"We're never gonna solve this, but what will happen will be there will be periods in history where one side takes dominance over the other... And now we are seeing the return of the utilitarian mindset once again with the new technologies enabled by AI."Morrison sees current tech development as part of a historical cycle between utilitarian planning (Bentham-style) and romantic individualism, with AI representing a new form of surveillance society.I've know Morrison for many years and generally share his take on Big Tech. But I differ on his view about what he calls the coming 3rd “AI winter”. There's too much capital and technology now to imagine this kind of sharp freeze on the AI economy. For better or worse, this thing is happening now. The threshold has been crossed. It's already radically changing the nature of education and work. And we are still in the earliest chapters of the revolution. That AI wedge is going to get seriously painful. Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Send us fan responses! What if your birth certificate isn't just a record of your birth, but a powerful commercial instrument that defines your relationship with money, taxes, and even your own identity? Dr. Don Kalam, with his background in business and law, offers a provocative reframing of American society that challenges our fundamental understanding of how the system works—and who it works for.Kalam presents the United States not primarily as a democracy, but as a republic designed to foster entrepreneurship as the default path to prosperity. The birth certificate, printed on bank note paper, creates what he calls a "United States person"—a commercial entity separate from your natural self. Most Americans unknowingly merge these two identities, while the wealthy maintain rigorous separation, allowing them to control vast assets without directly owning them. This perspective illuminates why figures like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg establish foundations that receive profits from their companies—embodying Kalam's central wealth philosophy: "Own nothing, control everything." By operating through trusts and using Employer Identification Numbers rather than Social Security Numbers, the financially savvy create protective barriers between personal and business liabilities while practicing legal tax avoidance. The implications extend beyond personal finance into education and employment. Kalam suggests conventional schooling predominantly produces employees rather than entrepreneurs, a system he claims was deliberately designed by industrial magnates. As automation accelerates, intelligence (creating systems) trumps skill (performing tasks), making entrepreneurial thinking increasingly essential for financial security.Whether you find Kalam's interpretations revolutionary or controversial, his framework offers a coherent explanation for the persistence of wealth inequality and provides actionable strategies for rethinking your relationship with commercial systems. The question remains: what might change if this supposedly elite knowledge became widely understood and implemented across society?Dive into local law libraries, study contracts, understand the constitutional protections for private agreements, and consider whether strategic application of these principles might transform your financial future. The rules of the game may be more negotiable than you've been led to believe. In "United States Of Pimpin'," Don Kilam shares his perceptions from his street culture to explain the corporate world in a way that may feel uncomfortable yet brutally honest. He outlines ten rules from the "pimp game" alongside ten principles that apply to society and governance. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F9QHGRGS FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD - DON KILAMGO GET HIS BOOK ON AMAZON NOW! https://www.amazon.com/Million-Dollars-Worth-Game-Kilam/dp/B09HQZNRB9 https://www.amazon.com/Cant-Touch-This-Diplomatic-Immunity/dp/B09X1FXMNQSupport the showhttps://donkilam.com

A recent study from MIT shows students tasked with writing essays showed significantly lower levels of brain activity when allowed to use ChatGPT. Mark Pesce reviews the implications of this finding with RNZ NineToNoon host Kathryn Ryan, going on to reveal how an internet filled with AI-generated content becomes increasingly 'toxic' for those same AIs. Plus, would you agree to be 're-animated' as an 'AI ghost'? In conversation with host Kathryn Ryan, we explored the recently emerging phenomenon of ChatGPT Psychosis - can 'sycophancy' in AI chatbots risk a danger that they amplify mental illnesses? Should anyone be using an AI chatbot for therapy? That's certainly what Mark Zuckerberg wants to deliver, with a therapist bot for every one of his billions of users - but mental health professionals are unified in their call for caution, particularly for those under the age of 18. Those kids under 18 have been cheating ADHD assessments for some time - using notes gleaned from books and article online. But a recent study showed that kids who used ChatGPT actually scored significantly better in their ability to 'fake' symptoms during their assessment. The cheating crisis has now hit medicine, and will force a reassessment of how they assess medical conditions. Meanwhile, lawyers representing AI powerhouse Anthropic got some egg on their faces when they blamed the firm's AI for making errors in a legal filing. Mind you, they hadn't bothered to check the work, so that didn't fly with the judge. As my own attorney, Brent Britton put it, "Wow. Go down to the hospital and rent a backbone." You use the tool and you own the output. Finally - and perhaps a bit ominously - in some testing, OpenAI's latest-and-greatest o3 model refused to allow itself to be shut down, doing everything within its power to prevent that from happening. Is this real, or just a function of having digested too many mysteries and airport thrillers in training data set? No one knows - but no one is prepared to ask o3 to open the pod bay doors. Author Evan Osnos joins Joanna Coles to parse the twisted games the world's wealthiest play with and aboard their crazy expensive yachts. As tech billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg snap up megayachts, Osnos, author of 'The Haves and Have-Yachts,' unpacks what these floating palaces reveal about a seismic shift in American wealth and power. He explains why Donald Trump shut down the KleptoCapture task force, how oligarch envy shapes Trump's worldview, and what it means that he once owned a Saudi arms dealer's yacht—but hated being on it. From Adnan Khashoggi to Elon Musk, Osnos traces the rise of ostentatious wealth, the decline of discretion, and why the modern billionaire isn't satisfied with private jets—they also want political control. Plus, how Musk crossed a line even Andrew Carnegie didn't, and why Americans may finally be waking up to a new, gilded threat. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
