If you have lived in New Orleans for any time at all you have heard about this fellow referred to simply as “Bienville” –although his baptismal name was Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. The native of Montreal gets the credit for founding New Orleans and being the Louisiana territory's colonial governor as part of the exploits, for the French crown, with his explorer big brother Iberville. Historian Sally Asher joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, and podcast producer Kelly Massicot, to tell about the founder and his many quirks, including a fondness for tattoos and an ability to communicate with local native tribes. Then there is the story about how he once fooled the British. There is a Louisiana parish and a prominent New Orleans street named after him, plus there is a statue in the French Quarter. There are also lots of stories and we will tell a few of them.

You may be thinking of switching brands, or you might also be looking to upgrade from a middleweight, but as Nic said, the big KTM super-naked gives you “the most fun for the buck”. It's a highly complex machine and Nic explains all. In our second segment this week, Arthur Coldwells chats with the thoughtful and brilliant motorcycle designer, JT Nesbitt of Bienville Studios in New Orleans. Actually, JT is the designer of the premiere edition cover bike of Robb Report Motorcycling magazine back in 2004—the Wraith. JT's latest project is the exquisite-looking Magnolia 4; a breathtakingly beautiful retro-styled, inline-4 motorcycle. Check out Bienville Studios for pictures and more information on the design journey that JT and his team have been on for the last few years.   By the way, if you're into Dual-Sport riding, then should check out the new Arai XD-5. It's completely redesigned, and typical Arai, every improvement is made with a priority for protection. For example, the new visor system is designed to maximize vision and surface area to glance off impact energy whilst at the same time offering easy installation and removal.  Arai is obsessed with every detail; there is such a thing as “The Arai Difference”. A helmet is not only about safety, it's also about comfort. The incredible fit and plush interior of any of the Arai helmets is immediately noticeable. So get to your local dealer and try out the full range of Arai helmets. You will be instantly amazed at the fit and all-day comfort of any Arai helmet. The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley  It's the opening night of The Manor, and no expense, small or large, has been spared. The infinity pool sparkles; crystal pouches for guests' healing have been placed in the Seaside Cottages and Woodland Hutches; the “Manor Mule” cocktail (grapefruit, ginger, vodka, and a dash of CBD oil) is being poured with a heavy hand. Everyone is wearing linen. But under the burning midsummer sun, darkness stirs. Old friends and enemies circulate among the guests. Just outside the Manor's immaculately kept grounds, an ancient forest bristles with secrets. And the Sunday morning of opening weekend, the local police are called. Something's not right with the guests. There's been a fire. A body's been discovered. THE FOUNDER * THE HUSBAND * THE MYSTERY GUEST * THE KITCHEN HELP It all began with a secret, fifteen years ago. Now the past has crashed the party. And it'll end in murder at… The Midnight Feast.   Southern Man by Greg Iles   Fifteen years after the events of the Natchez Burning trilogy, Penn Cage is alone. Nearly all his loved ones are dead, and his old allies gone. Pursued by enemies and demoralized by a divided community, he's found sanctuary on a former cotton plantation above the Mississippi River. But Penn's self-imposed exile comes to an abrupt end when a brawl at a Bienville rap concert triggers a shooting - one that nearly takes the life of his daughter Annie. Before the stunned city can process the tragedy, an arsonist starts torching antebellum plantation homes in Natchez and Bienville. When an unknown Black radical group claims the deadly fires as acts of historic justice, citywide panic ensues, driving a prosperous Southern town to the brink of race war. Drafted by Bienville's mayor to end the crisis and restore peace, Penn investigates the fires as casualties mount and armed marchers move toward a decisive clash. But Penn suspects that the arson attacks may not be what they seem - not retribution by radicals, but false-flag strikes designed to trigger the very chaos he sees roiling the streets. For that mayhem provides state and county leaders the excuse to dissolve the Black-run Bienville city government and seize control. It's up to Penn and a band of locals to uncover the truth and expose those trying to destabilize the city.   LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Orleans witnessed its first modern Mardi Gras procession - kick-started by a group of students eager to revive the traditional masquerade, banned for six decades - on 27th February, 1827.  The city's parades and revelry can trace their origins back to ancient pagan festivals and European traditions, cemented by the arrival of French-Canadian explorer (and MASSIVE ‘Fat Tuesday' fan) Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville into Louisiana in 1699.  In this episode, The Retrospectors Krewe dig into the celebration's impact on revenue and refuse; consider the discriminatory practices that accompanied the festivities until the late 20th century; and get angry about the British equivalent: Pancake Day…  Further Reading: ‘Here's a Brief History of Mardi Gras and How It All Started' (The Manual, 2024): https://www.themanual.com/culture/history-of-madi-gras/ ‘Unmasking the History of Mardi Gras in New Orleans' (The Crescent Magazine, 2022): https://tulanemagazine.com/unmasking-the-history-of-mardi-gras-in-new-orleans/ ‘Mardi Gras New Orleans Louisiana 4K' (Dan Usher Films, 2017): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bv1mFl9SI4 Love the show? "Today we visit where the TENNESSEE-TOMBIGBEE WATERWAY crosses the Natchez Trace Parkway about 30 miles north of Tupelo, Mississippi. "The Tombigbee River was known as the "River of the Chickasaw" -- Desoto crossed it when he came through the Chickasaw land in 1540. Bienville traveled with his troops up the Tombigbee from Mobile in 1736 with visions of destroying the Chickasaw Nation, before being routed by the Chickasaw at the Battle of Ackia. But Bienville saw the advantage of a waterway connecting the Tombigbee and the Tennessee Rivers and recommended it to Louis XIV. It would allow a more direct water route to the Gulf of Mexico for much of the territory East of the Mississippi River. Frontier settlers also recognized the advantage such a waterway would bring, and in 1810 residents along the "Tennessee River in the Knoxville Tennessee area proposed to Congress that the two rivers be connected. The Army Corps of Engineers made the first survey in 1827. Transportation by steam power and fossil fuel and a growing railway and highway system delayed further discussion of the waterway for quite sometime, but the economics of water transportation finally brought this project to the nations attention once again. "Join us on our next program when we will continue our discussion of the Waterway and visit the nearby Bay Springs Lock and Dam. For Natchez Trace a road through the wilderness, I'm Frank Thomas." "The next stop along the parkway is in Tupelo Mississippi. It is OLD TOWN OVERLOOK, where there's another marker erected by the Mississippi Daughters of the American Revolution. This one was presented to the City of Tupelo on November 19, 1914. The inscription mentions the Battle of Ackia. This is a partial quotation from that monument. 'Bienville fought the Battle of Ackia with the Chickasaw Indians near this spot May 26, 1736. Of the rage that repulsed him let it be recorded here, they die well who die for faith and home and native land.' "Of course the entire story doesn't end with the Battle of Ackia, but it was the beginning of the end for the French in this region, because after Bienville's defeat at the hands of the Chickasaws, French influence within the region declined rapidly. "This exhibit overlooks the flood plane of OLD TOWN CREEK as the Natchez Trace begins to make its way up into the Northeast hill section of Mississippi, and what are the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. OLD TOWN CREEK is one of the source streams of the Tombigbee River, which was first known as 'THE RIVER OF THE CHICKASAW' "Join us next time when we will visit the TUPELO VISITOR CENTER. "Along the Natchez Trace Parkway, within the city limits of Tupelo, Mississippi is an exhibit shelter that tells of Chickasaw Village life in the early 1700s. There are foundations there that show the size and shape of both summer and winter homes and of a fort the group would use in times of danger. "One threat to the Chickasaw came from the French following the Natchez Indian's massacre of French troops at Fort Rosalie in 1729 and the subsequent annihilation of the Natchez Tribe by the French. A few Natchez Indians took refuge with their friends the Chickasaws.   "Ackia was a fortified Chickasaw Indian village, located within the city limits of present day Tupelo, Mississippi. Bienville had returned from France and he decided to annihilate the Chickasaws because they sheltered the escaped Natchez Indians and because the Chickasaw were allies with the British and constantly threatening communications between French colonies in Louisiana and those in Canada. Bienville lead a French and Choctaw army up from Mobile while d'Artaguette brought an army down from the north. D'Artaguette got to the Chickasaws first, and the Chickasaws killed him. Then along came Bienville. Though Bienville survived, the Chickasaws forced him and his troops back to Mobile. "Join us next time and look at more of the battle. Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness

"After the French and the Choctaw annihilated the Natchez Indians tribe, the few remaining Natchez joined their friends, the Chickasaw. "The Chickasaw threatened communications between the French settlements in Louisiana and Canada, and they threatened French boats along the Mississippi River. The French joined forces with the Choctaw Indians to fight against the Chickasaw not only wanting to get the escaped Natchez Indians but to destroy the Chickasaw Nation as well. "When you travel the Natchez Trace you'll hear the story of the Battle of Ackia; it occurred in 1736. Ackia was a Chickasaw Indian Village located in what is present day Tupelo, Mississippi. The French, lead by Bienville, planned to attack the Chickasaw from the south while Pierre d'Artaguette came from Illinois to attack from the north. Bienville was delayed and d'Artaguette encountered the Chickasaw first and was defeated and killed. Two months later Bienville arrived and attacked the Chickasaw not knowing of d'Artaguette's defeat. The Chickasaw then drove the French all the way back to Mobile. After defeat by the Chickasaw Indians, French control in the river valley declined. Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness

"D'Iberville reinforced the French claim upon the Mississippi River valley in 1699 by landing along the Gulf Coast and trading with the Natchez Indians. D'Iberville came with his younger brother, Bienville, who founded New Orleans and served as governor of the French province of Louisiana. There was a trading post set up at the Natchez Capitol and later Fort Rosalie was built in 1716. "In 1724 Bienville was recalled to France, and in 1729 Sieur de Chopart was commander at Fort Rosalie. The Indians heard rumors that the French wanted them to abandon their villages and their land following the orders of Chopart. During the Indian's annual harvest celebration in November of 1729, the Natchez Indians rebelled against the French and massacred practically the entire French Garrison at Fort Rosalie. "The shocking news soon reached New Orleans. The French immediately and mercilessly annihilated the entire Natchez Indian Nation, only a few survivors escaped up the Old Trace to join their friends in the Chickasaw Nation. "Join us next time when we'll see how the French pursued the remaining Natchez Indians and planned to attack the Chickasaws. For Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness, I'm Frank Thomas." 401. Part 2 of our interview with Timothy Bartel about Evangeline. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Evangeline was a bestseller in nineteenth-century America, inspiring generations of readers with a heroine who overcomes colonial violence and exile in her romantic and spiritual quest across America. Long ignored by modernist scholars, Evangeline is finally getting the critical attention it deserves. Drawing on original research in Longfellow's scholarly manuscripts, Bartel explores the theological sources and spiritual world of Evangeline, arguing that Longfellow was inspired by the church fathers to craft Evangeline into a heroine who uniquely exemplifies, in her epic quest, the ancient Christian doctrines of deification and divine light. Bartel's Glimpses of Her Father's Glory returns Evangeline to its rightful place as a major poem of American literature, one that takes as its theme nothing less than the ultimate purpose of human existence. Dr. Bartel holds a PhD in Divinity from the University of St. Andrews and a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from Seattle Pacific University. He is one of the founding faculty members of The College at The Saint Constantine School, helping shape the writing and literature curriculum. This week in Louisiana history. January 23, 1680. Hi Folks, I hope everyone is doing well and we are glad that we get to bring you the show while you are stuck at home. This episode's drink that we will be covering is called the Ancient Mariner which is a Jeff "Beachbum" Berry cocktail. This drink was created by accident as Jeff was reverse engineering one of Trader Vic's recipe "The Navy Grog". This cocktail was a result of trying to re-create the drink and I must say that I'm glad he did as it is delicious. The two items of Trader Vic's that gave Jeff a hard time to figure out was the rum mix and the navy grog mix. Trader Vic and Don the Beachcomber would mix different rums from around the world to make their own special blend to make drinks. We found through time that Don would use honey syrup in his Navy Grog and Vic would use Pimento Dram and simple syrup. For the recipe to this drink, check out our website recipe page: https://tikicentralcanada.ca/recipes/ The reason for the name of the drink is not the Rime of the Ancient Mariner poem that most people would think but a play on words with Jeff as it took so long to make the drink and perfect it that they felt like ancient mariners. This drink has a nice mix of blended rums, pimento spice, grapefruit juice and lime juice. For the summertime, it's very refreshing. Tip: wait a bit for the ice to melt to get a better result as we found of the flavors. On "Mark's Adventures" segment: we will be talking about Jeff's place called Latitude 29 which is based in New Orleans. This unique bar is inside a classic hotel called the Bienville Hotel. This historical place was built in 1835 and named after Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the French founder of New Orleans, the Bienville House Hotel originally served as a manufacturing plant for Planters Rice Mill in the newly established state of Louisiana. It is modest in size with about 15 tables and 12 or so seats at the bar. It has an entrance from the street and one from the hotel, and one side over-looking a small indoor pool. Some of the drinks to mention are the Pontchatrain Pearl Diver, the Latitude 29, and Hell in the Pacific. On "Did You Know" segment: we go into our research to find out about an ancient mariner story based on a book written by H.P. Lovecraft called The Call of Cthulhu. This book depicts a unmapped island which is placed in the Cthulhu Triangle (real location between New Zealand and South America). A sailor who makes it back to New Zealand lives to tell the tale of horror and tragedy where all of his crew members died. A horrifying creature describe as having a "cuttlefish head, dragon body, and scaly wings. To hear more about this tiki tale, listen to the show!!! Here is a link to a YouTube video to make the drink: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTYk1UQQZOk&t=228s YouTube video of the Call of the Cthulhu explained: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HL-VCG4l-0 For more information on Latitude 29, go to Mark's Tiki page: https://tikicentralcanada.ca/marks-tiki-page/ So don't forget our #hashtag competition for the best garnished drink of the month!! It is now March 1736. The Chickasaw Indians who are allied with the English are disrupting the Mississippi River communication route between Quebec and New Orleans around south of what is now Memphis. Bienville ,the governor of Louisiana, devised a two prong North-South attack. He, Bienville, planned to march north from New Orleans and he ordered  both Vincennes and the commandant from Fort de Chartres just south of St. Louis to march south rendezvousing near Toupelo Mississippi. Both were marching to a tortured death at the Battle of Ackia It was the beginning of the end of French influence and control in the region. In 1764 the French commandant left Vincennes. France eventually ceded all French lands east of the Mississippi in peace treaty of 1763. It ended the French and Indian War. It also doomed the free roaming way of life for the Indians in North America.

The Pelican Club, on the corner of Bienville and Exchange Alley in the French Quarter, is a cozy, contemporary Creole restaurant with my favorite duck dish in the whole world... Trio of Duck. The Escargot en Croute is also awesome and provides a yummy appetizer to any of the delicious ala carte entrees. Three separate dining areas - including a great bar - gives you enough reasons to go back again and again.Great art on the walls, great food on the table, talent in the kitchen, and first class service on the floor makes for a one-of-a-kind, French Quarter experience you won't forget.

Greg Iles "Cemetery Road": When Marshall McEwan left his Mississippi hometown at eighteen, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington, DC. But as the ascendancy of a chaotic administration lifts him from print fame to television stardom, Marshall discovers that his father is terminally ill, and he must return home to face the unfinished business of his past. On arrival, he finds Bienville, Mississippi very much changed. His family's 150-year-old newspaper is failing; and Jet Turner, the love of his youth, has married into the family of Max Matheson, one of a dozen powerful patriarchs who rule the town through the exclusive Bienville Poker Club. To Marshall's surprise, the Poker Club has taken a town on the brink of extinction and offered it salvation, in the form of a billion-dollar Chinese paper mill. But on the verge of the deal being consummated, two murders rock Bienville to its core, threatening far more than the city's economic future. An experienced journalist, Marshall has seen firsthand how the corrosive power of money and politics can sabotage investigations. Joining forces with his former lover—who through her husband has access to the secrets of the Poker Club—Marshall begins digging for the truth behind those murders. But he and Jet soon discover that the soil of Mississippi is a minefield where explosive secrets can destroy far more than injustice. The South is a land where everyone hides truths: of blood and children, of love and shame, of hate and murder—of damnation and redemption. The Poker Club's secret reaches all the way to Washington, D.C., and could shake the foundations of the U.S. Senate. But by the time Marshall grasps the long-buried truth about his own history, he would give almost anything not to have to face it.

“Iles sits alongside the icons at the top of today's crime-fiction mountain. He has made Mississippi his own in the same way that James Lee Burke has claimed Cajun country and Michael Connelly has remapped contemporary Los Angeles.” (Starred review, Booklist, CEMETERY ROAD) And with his newest novel, #1 bestselling author Greg Iles illuminates the intricate and complicated relationships that define not just one small town—but that define human nature. CEMETERY ROAD (William Morrow) is an electrifying tale of friendship, betrayal, and shattering secrets that threaten to destroy a Mississippi town. “Iles once again delivers a sweeping tale of family dysfunction, sexually charged secrets and the power of wealth, with an overlay of violence and Southern sensibility.” (Starred review, Publishers Weekly, CEMETERY ROAD) When Marshall McEwan left home at eighteen, he vowed never to return. As a successful D.C. journalist, the political chaos in the nation’s capital has advanced his career, but his father is dying, and his mother is struggling. Marshall returns home to find the town is experiencing an economic rebirth—but everyone knows there’s more to the story behind the new Chinese paper mill landing in Bienville and the ruling families of the town, a group known as the Poker Club, will do anything to keep their secrets buried. Chaos ensues when a beloved local archeologist is murdered at the site where the new mill is to be built. But it’s a shocking second homicide that threatens not only to ruin Bienville’s ‘deal of the century,’ but reveal a secret so devastating that the lives of those who have kept the truth hidden will never be the same. And by the time Marshall digs up the long-buried truth, he would give almost anything not to have to face it. With a paralyzing twist that will leave you speechless, Iles has created a completely original and unforgettable tale of greed and desire, jealousy and murder, forgiveness and damnation—and proves, once again, he is a modern master of suspense. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

Welcome to Confetti Park, a place where you can listen to kids music and hear stories, poems, jumprope jingles, and learn about the culture of Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta. I’m Katy Hobgood Ray, your host.  In New Orleans we are celebrating our 300th birthday this year. New Orleans was founded in 1718 by Bienville, and the city and Louisiana are known for having unique mix of cultural influences: French, Spanish, African, German, Native America, and many other peoples … that is why we have such unique food and music. This is a music medley of songs featured on the show this week. Give Me A Squeeze Please - Buckwheat Zydeco Joke of the Day - 7-8-9 Swamp Stomp - Angela Mannino Whistle While You Work - Louis Armstrong Twinkle Twinkle - Ayana of the Renzi Center Sharing - a poem by Marcus Page Fingers Under the Door - Vivi Melody Hide and Seek - Jazzy Ash L.O.S.T. - Imagination Movers Je Veux Marier - Magnolia Sisters This episode of Confetti Park begins with a song by Buckwheat Zydeco, a famous zydeco musician. Zydeco is a kind of music that was created in Louisiana, by Cajun French, African and Native American people blending all their sounds. Buck is going to tell us all about a very important instrument of zydeco music….. the accordion. Then we hear from Angela Mannino with "Swamp Stomp"…. Angela is a New orleans Native who now lives in NY where she is a renowned soprano opera singer… we are lucky to have her singing several great Louisiana kids songs on this album. We also hear famous jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong, performing a song from Disney’s Snow White…. You might remember seven dwarves singing this… "Whistle While You Work." Ayana, a student at the Shreveport based Renzi Center, and New Orleans poet Marcus Page share their poems, and then we hear a little run of hide and seek songs, beginning with NOLA native Vivi Melody. The Imagination Movers are perhaps Louisiana’s most famous kids music band. Jazzy Ash, who is terrific fun, lives in Los Angeles but spent her childhood summers on the West bank of New Orleans. She plays Dixieland style kids music. We end with the Magnolia Sisters, a Cajun band from Lafayette Louisiana. "Je Veux Marier," which translates to“I want to marry,” is a fun song to dance to at a Cajun wedding. Also in this episode of Confetti Park is the storytime feature Louis Lion, When It Gets Dark I May Start Cryin, by Cindy Foust of Monroe, Louisiana. Cindy has a whole Alpha-kidZ children's book series. Each letter of the alphabet gets a feature story and a feature creature who has an adventure… and learns a valuable lesson. You can listen to all the stories you hear on this radio show on our free Confetti Park podcast. The Confetti Park radio show and podcast is supported by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation and Music Rising at Tulane University. Thanks for listening. In today’s episode, we head over to the Historic New Orleans Collection in the French Quarter, and explore their newest exhibit, titled, New Orleans, the Founding Era. The exhibit is part of the tricentennial of New Orleans celebration and is a great way to envision what the city was like at the very beginning. It brings together a vast array of rare artifacts from the Historic New Orleans Collections holdings, and from institutions across Europe and North America to tell the stories of the city’s early days. To help us explore the exhibit, I am joined by the exhibition curator, Erin M. Greenwald. Erin is currently the Curator of Programs at the New Orleans Museum of Art, but was previously the Senior Curator and Historian at the Historic New Orleans Collection. She was the lead curator in putting New Orleans, the Founding Era together and shares her stories and insights about what you'll see when you visit the exhibit. The Historic New Orleans Collection The Historic New Orleans Collection is open Tuesday-Saturday year round, and offers both permanent and rotating exhibits. There is no admission charge to the view the exhibits. There is a small charge of $5 for non-members if you would like to tour the Williams Residence. Located at 533 Royal Street, it is a nice destination when you want to escape the heat and the crowds. Be sure to let them know you heard about the museum from Beyond Bourbon Street! Thank You Thanks to Erin Greenwald for talking with us about the exhibit. Bienville's Dilemma and the Founding of New Orleans In the Spring of 1718, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville presided over a small ceremony on the banks of the Mississippi River and officially founded what we know today as the City of New Orleans. How did Bienville come to choose this site for New Orleans? What were the other options and how do those decisions impact New Orleanians today? In today's episode we explore Bienville's Dilemma with noted author and geographer Richard Campanella. In Richard's book, Bienville's Dilemma, he explains the factors that led to the decision to place New Orleans at its present site, rather than at the mouth of the Mississippi River. You'll learn the important differences between a good site and a good situation, and why that mattered to the French. We also settle the question of whether New Orleans is predominantly above or below sea level. As we move forward in time, Richard and I discuss how decisions made at the very beginning of New Orleans continue to impact the city today.  Richard also explains how even today you can use subtle clues to retrace the past, including the former boundaries of the plantations that lined the Riverfront from below the French Quarter all the way Uptown to present-day Riverbend in the Carrollton neighborhood. Join us for a nearly 300 year journey from Bienville to post Katrina New Orleans. You'll be rewarded with a new understanding and appreciation for the Crescent City. For two decades, New Orleans was a town with about 400 riotous, irreligious, desperate individuals. Jean-Baptiste, Sieur de Bienville always hoped the French Empire would take more interest in the area—it was the gateway to wider America, the key to the continent’s greatest river, its richest soils, and a highway for the Indian trade. If only it actually had people in it!Further Readings/References:French, Douglas E. Early Speculative Bubbles & Increases in the Supply of Money. Second Edition. At the age of thirteen, Bienville set off from France to father North America's Gulf Coast, including every main port from Pensacola, Florida to New Orleans, Louisiana. If something could go wrong for him, he would have assured you that it did. In tattooing his entire body with the figures of serpents, did he tap into an ancient curse of this new land? In allowing himself to be marked by the natives of this coast, did he agree to an oath unspoken, aligning his fate with their own? Sean Herman takes you into the history and lore of this lesser known tale of Mobile, Alabama's founder. To read more tales like this, and to see the hand stippled art pieces created by Sean that correlate with the Sacred Oath Series, visit serpentsofbienville.com. Huge thank you to Wes Kennison, weskennison.com, for our amazing intro and soundtrack.
