Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 1-29-2026: An emailer asks about hemorrhoids affecting 2 relatives,a 60-year-old man and his 20-year-old daughter, with the daughter also experiencing constipation worsened by fiber supplements. Dr. Dawn explains hemorrhoids are essentially varicose veins of the anus, with 102 genetic regions identified affecting blood vessel and smooth muscle strength. She emphasizes that fiber supplements without adequate water create "cement in the pipe"—recommending 16-24 ounces of water with supplements and 2 liters of clear water daily. Miralax also requires sufficient hydration to work. Key strategies include exercise to stimulate gut motility, staying off the toilet if unable to produce results, using a standing desk to reduce prolonged sitting pressure, and triggering the gastrocolic reflex by eating. Dr. Dawn discusses research on the "volatilome"—volatile organic compounds in breath that reflect gut microbiome composition. Researchers using sterile mice colonized with specific bacteria could identify bacterial fingerprints through breath analysis. The technique identified disease-associated compounds for tuberculosis and malaria, and correlated specific gut bacteria with asthma severity in children. The research suggests breath testing could eventually replace stool samples for microbiome assessment and disease screening. She explains detoxification biochemistry, distinguishing between water-soluble toxins easily filtered by kidneys and fat-soluble toxins requiring liver transformation. Phase one converts fat-soluble molecules into reactive intermediates—dangerous if they linger—while phase two attaches water-soluble molecules like glutathione to neutralize them for excretion. Supporting phase two requires green tea, cruciferous vegetables, garlic, and curcumin. She cautions against extended fasting for detox, especially over age 50, as it depletes the body's detoxification resources and muscle mass. A caller asks about alkaline versus acidic water. Dr. Dawn explains you cannot alkalinize blood since kidneys maintain pH, but alkaline urine is beneficial. Rather than expensive alkaline waters, adding a pinch of baking soda achieves the same effect. Eating a 3:1 ratio of fruits, vegetables, and grains to animal products naturally alkalinizes urine. She notes lemons paradoxically alkalinize because kidneys overcompensate for the acid load. A caller asks about managing heart disease after receiving a third stent. Dr. Dawn recommends the Mediterranean diet over DASH for cardiac patients, as Mediterranean emphasizes fish, whole grains, and fiber that binds cholesterol for excretion, while DASH focuses on calcium for hypertension. She encourages exploring exercise options through meetup.com groups and the hospital's lifestyle center, emphasizing that consistent effort can reduce biological age by 3-5 years regardless of chronological age.

Send a text to Melissa and she'll answer it on the next episode. Let's talk honestly about constipation—what's truly normal, what's not, and how to get back to regular without relying on harsh laxatives. We break down the real signs of constipation beyond just “skipping days,” including hard, dry stools, straining, incomplete emptying, or no urge at all, and we map those patterns to targeted homeopathic remedies that support the body rather than forcing it.We walk through practical matches: Nux vomica for tense, irritable, stressed-out “always urging, never empty” patterns; Bryonia for dryness and pain that worsen with movement; Alumina when there's no urge and sluggish bowels; Silica for the “bashful stool” that slips back in; Opium for severe sluggishness after anesthesia or medications; Calc Carb for slow metabolism and large, painful stools, especially in kids; and Lycopodium for afternoon bloating, trapped gas, and IBS-like discomfort. Along the way, we share how to choose potencies and frequency with a light, sensible touch.Beyond remedies, we dig into the everyday shifts that make a big difference: choosing the right magnesium and pairing it with Mag phos, staying truly hydrated, using warm lemon water to prime digestion, and leaning on fruit like prunes, pears, kiwi, and berries. Movement matters more than most people realize, so we offer simple ideas—from walking to gentle squats—to nudge peristalsis. Parents will find guidance for easing fear and withholding in kids with kindness and flexible strategies. We also flag when to seek medical input: blood in stool, severe pain, more than five days without a bowel movement, unexplained weight loss, or recurring episodes. Most of all, we connect the dots between elimination and whole-body health—mood, skin, energy—so you can move from coping to confident. If this conversation helps, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs relief, and leave a quick review so more people can find these practical tools. You may also gain Access to my Fullscript dispensary and save 30% by going to: https://us.fullscript.com/welcome/mcrenshawFIND ME!

Have you been told that slow motility is the reason you're constipated, bloated, or dealing with digestive issues that just won't resolve?Have you tried to “treat” slow motility — with supplements, laxatives, diets, or protocols — only to find that nothing actually sticks?Or maybe you haven't been formally diagnosed, but all signs seem to point to slow digestion, sluggish bowels, or food just not moving the way it should. If any of that sounds familiar, this episode is for you.Today we're continuing the Real Root Cause Series, where I'm taking conditions that are commonly labeled as root causes — and breaking down to you what their REAL root causes are. This is super powerful because understanding a fake vs. real root cause is the difference between finding healing from your symptoms... or not.Today's topic is: slow motility.Slow motility is a common diagnosis I hear clients get from a doctor who explains that "slow motility" is why they have constipation, acid reflux, bloating, or some other digestive issue. The solution to slow motility, according to the doctor, is usually either "get used to it", surgery (when motility is bad enough), or a merry-go-round of supplements or medications designed to help "slow motility" (but that don't really help relieve your symptoms). The reason these methods don't really help slow motility is because slow motility is NOT a root cause. It's being CAUSED by something else! That's why, on today's episode, I'm breaking down:Why treating slow gut motility with supplements or medications rarely worksThe real causes of slow gut motilityHow to test for these root causes of low motilityAnd what actually needs to be addressed for motility to return naturallyIf you're ready to stop chasing new and different supplements or simply feeling like a victim to the rate your body decided to digest at - then this episode is for you.TIMESTAMPS:00:00 - Introduction to Slow Motility 00:34 - Understanding Real Root Causes 01:00 - Common Misdiagnoses and Misconceptions 02:01 - Welcome to the Better Belly Podcast 03:10 - Deep Dive into Slow Motility 07:46 - Symptoms and Related Conditions 09:04 - Root Causes of Slow Motility 13:43 - Digestive Enzymes and Their Importance 17:34 - Visceral Adhesions Explained 20:32 - Understanding Myofascial and Visceral Adhesions 21:44 - Finding a Qualified Practitioner for Visceral Manipulation 22:32 - Self-Evaluation Techniques for Visceral Adhesions 23:21 - The Role of the Vagus Nerve in Motility 25:35 - Mold and Its Impact on Gut Health 27:56 - Other Pathogens Affecting Gut Motility 29:34 - Nutrient Deficiencies and Constipation 31:04 - Food Sensitivities and Inflammation 32:41 - Thyroid Issues and Slow Motility 34:49 - Comprehensive Testing and Protocols 38:13 - Conclusion and Next StepsEPISODES MENTIONED:235// SIBO Symptoms, SIBO Testing, and Why SIBO Treatments Fail
Busy Thursday as we get ready for the colder temps to move in along with the snow! Should start sometime this afternoon & continue through tomorrow. In the news this morning, actor Timothy Busfield recently turned himself in to authorities after allegations of child sexual abuse and now he's facing new charges involving a 16 year-old girl, an ICE agent was attacked in Minneapolis yesterday & shot a man in the leg, Verizon has resolved it's outage from yesterday and has promised to provide account credits to it's customers, a man who heckled President Trump at a Ford factory has been suspended from his job…but a GoFundMe for him has already raised almost a million dollars, and a recall on Super Greens dietary supplements. In sports, the Bucks take on the Spurs tonight, the Badger men's basketball team face Rutgers on Saturday, a look at the NFL Divisional Round schedule, the College Football National Championship game is on Monday night between Miami & Indiana, Adam Theilen officially announced his retirement yesterday, and it looks like John Harbaugh is going to be the next head coach for the Giants. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight and we also discussed a list of "nearly perfect" comedy films and added a few more of our own. Cool story about an influencer who goes to farmer's markets to highlight local vendors and completely changed the life of a mom-&-pop beef jerky brand from Texas! And speaking of snacks, we looked at Instacart's list of the Top 10 Super Bowl snacks. If you're looking for something Super Bowl-esque, Cup Noodles is releasing three chicken wing-inspired flavors just in time for the big game. It's Hypothetical Thursday and Brian went first with his question, "Would you rather have constant diarrhea or constant constipation?" Jean asked, "Which Boston sports team would you pick to win a championship?" Elsewhere in sports, the UFC Bantamweight Championship fight between Kayla Harrison & Amanda Nunes at next weekend's UFC 324 has been postponed, a bunch of money & guns were stolen from Greg Biffle's home just weeks after his tragic death in a plane crash, and a high school football team is cancelling it's next season after it went winless….and scoreless for an entire season this year! Office Cora joined us just after 8am to talk about what she's up to this weekend in the 715. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a woman who found an interesting charge on her Chick-Fil-A receipt, a stranger who knocked on someone's door at midnight and asked them to make a pizza, a mom in the UK who made her kids pay for their own McDonald's, and a #FloridaWoman who tried to avoid being arrested by shitting on the cops.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Your liver processes over 500 tasks every single day, breaking down hormones, emotions, toxins, and stress, but most people never give it the support it needs. In this episode, I sit down with Chelsea Gaul, a natural health practitioner and co-founder of InnerBrew Coffee, to discuss why coffee enemas should be part of your wellness routine. Beyond being another detox mechanism, coffee enemas are powerful tools for clearing brain fog and releasing stored anger. Chelsea and I talk about the mechanism behind coffee enemas and how they stimulate bile release, why traditional Chinese medicine views the liver as the body's anger center, and how frequency-imprinted coffee can enhance detoxification. Chelsea explains why pregnant women, people taking GLP-1 medications, and those struggling with constipation, nausea, or fatty liver disease should consider this therapy. She shares practical tips for beginners and explains why the emotional release that happens during a coffee enema is just as important as the physical detox. "If your body is vibrating at a higher level, the parasite quite literally does not need to feed off you anymore. It will just leave." ~ Chelsea Gaul In This Episode: - Why coffee enemas are a game-changer for detox - The mechanism of coffee enemas and bile release - Relieving detox symptoms with coffee enemas - Coffee enemas for anxiety, depression, and brain fog - How coffee enemas help treat liver issues - Frequency-imprinted coffee and plant integrity for efficacy - Sourcing high-quality coffee from Papua New Guinea - How coffee enemas cured Chelsea's daughter of PMS - Constipation relief and digestive benefits of coffee enemas - Relieving nausea and constipation with coffee enemas - Coffee vs. water enemas and chamomile alternatives Products & Resources Mentioned: InnerBrew Coffee: Available in one-pound, two-pound, and five-pound options with educational videos on their website. Constipation might not sound like the most glamorous topic, but it's one of the most common and overlooked health issues in the UK. Around 1 in 7 adults and up to 1 in 3 children experience it, and it's responsible for thousands of hospital admissions every year. This week I'm joined by Dr Angad Dhillon, Consultant Gastroenterologist and accredited Bowel Cancer Screening endoscopist at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. With advanced training from St Mark's Hospital, one of the world's leading centres for intestinal disorders, Dr Dhillon specialises in complex endoscopy, bowel health, and digestive wellbeing. He also happens to be my best friend from medical school who I've literally known over 2 decades! We talk about lesser known constipation strategies, what functional constipation means, how it can be related to other medical issues and what you should be optimising before you reach for a laxative, medications or supplements.Today we explore:

When faced with challenging cases where progress seems stalled, revisiting these foundational assessments can often reveal overlooked insights. Encouragingly, even the smallest improvements in a patient's quality of life or pain reduction signify substantial progress and should be celebrated as such. ### Understanding the Neurophysiology of Pain For effective pain management, it is crucial to address the central nervous system's role. Pain is often exacerbated or misunderstood due to centrally sensitized conditions, where patients may perceive their pain levels to be disproportionately high. Recognizing these patterns and responding with neurological treatments can help in reducing the body's exaggerated pain response. ### Scarring and its Impact on Mobility When treating persistent abdominal and muscular pain, it is essential to factor in scarring as a significant contributor. Scarring can inhibit muscle function and neural pathways, thereby exacerbating pain or limiting motion. By focusing on reducing scar tissue and enhancing mobility, practitioners can achieve notable improvements in patient outcomes. ### Effective Use of Frequency Specific Therapeutics Incorporating frequency-specific approaches offers a promising frontier in treating complex conditions unresponsive to conventional therapies. By targeting specific cellular functions, practitioners can modulate bodily responses and alleviate symptoms related to nerve and muscle dysfunction. Identifying and using the correct frequencies for issues like nerve pain, muscle hardness, or unresolved systemic conditions can revolutionize patient care. ### Addressing Misdiagnosed Pain Sources Frequent misdiagnoses occur when only one aspect of pain is treated without considering the interconnections within the body. Practitioners are encouraged to adopt a holistic approach—examining musculature, nerve pathways, and cognitive factors simultaneously. This integrated view can uncover underlying issues like trigger points or misunderstood nerve damage. ### The Role of Stories and Continuous Learning Sharing clinical stories and experiences is an invaluable practice for medical professionals. These narratives provide context and enrich theoretical knowledge, making lessons more relatable and memorable. As practitioners progress in their careers, continuous reflection on past cases coupled with ongoing education will enhance their diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

You will learn about the five macro minerals as the big players that run your electrical system, stress response, thyroid, blood sugar, and detox pathways, and why I always start with a straightforward hair test before worrying about smaller numbers. What is really happening when these core minerals drift out of balance and you feel fatigued, anxious, constipated, bloated, unable to sleep well, or emotionally numb while your blood work keeps looking normal? Chronic stress, mold, gut and absorption issues, restrictive eating, big hormonal transitions, and even over filtered water can quietly drain these minerals long before anything shows up clearly on your standard labs. Your body has been compensating for years using every mineral trick it has to keep your blood looking stable, and the question is whether you'll help it move from survival back into actually feeling good. You'll Learn:[00:00] Introduction[02:49] What a cellular-level mineral test reveals long before blood work changes[04:57] How calcium can steady your system or silently block hormonal signals[05:51] The surprising ways low magnesium derails energy, mood, and digestion[06:52] What sodium levels expose about your stress load and resilience[18:52] How mold strips key minerals and creates the “four lows” pattern[20:26] Why arsenic and other heavy metals rise when minerals crash[32:40] What it really takes to move from mineral survival mode back to stabilityResources Mentioned:Master Your Minerals Course | WebsiteOther Hormone Healing episodes to listen to:Zinc deep dive | EpisodeCopper deep dive | EpisodeIron deep dive Part 1 | EpisodeIron deep dive Part 2 | EpisodeAll about the Copper IUD | EpisodeSelenium deep dive | EpisodeNothing boring about Boron | EpisodeMaster your minerals. Welcome to the Choosing Wisely Campaign series! This is the fifth and final episode of our 5-part series exploring the ABIM Foundation's Choosing Wisely Lists. This campaign aims to promote conversations between clinicians and patients to avoid unnecessary medical tests, treatments, and procedures. Our last case-based episode focuses on a school-aged male presenting with new-onset enuresis. After a discussion of the differential diagnosis and evidence-based evaluation strategies, we apply recommendations from multiple AAP Choosing Wisely lists to create a care plan that is safe, resource-conscious, and child-centered. Throughout this episode, we'll highlight how ethical care principles—beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice—guide high-value decision-making and help us avoid unnecessary imaging, laboratory studies, and interventions that add cost without improving outcomes. This familiar case in pediatrics is worthy of a rewind to relisten to a throwback episode that will reinforce your skills and emphasize the clinical diagnosis and management without added diagnostics, referrals, or medications. This case closes out our series on Choosing Wisely in Pediatrics, but the principles we've explored should continue to inform your practice every day. If you missed earlier episodes, rewind to learn more about the campaign's background and listen to cases on fever and cough, gastroenterology presentations, and more. Series Learning Objectives: Introduction to the Choosing Wisely Campaign: Understand the origins, historical precedent, and primary goals of the campaign. Case-Based Applications: Explore five common presentations in primary and acute care pediatrics, applying concepts from various Choosing Wisely lists to guide management and resource stewardship. Effective Communication: Learn strategies for engaging in tough conversations with parents and colleagues to create allies and ensure evidence-based practices are followed. This week on The Nutrition Couch, Leanne and Susie unpack three huge topics women are constantly asking about: fasting, constipation, and whether “natural Ozempic” supplements like berberine are worth the hype. First up, they dive into intermittent fasting and why it often backfires for women, especially if you’re training hard, in your perimenopausal years, or constantly battling cravings and afternoon blow-outs. They talk through what the research actually says, how female hormones and muscle mass change the picture, and why a simple 12-hour overnight break from food may be the sweet spot for most women rather than extreme fasting windows. Next, they break down the brand-new constipation guidelines from the British Dietetic Association, including the now-famous kiwi fruit recommendation, mineral-rich water, magnesium and that slightly outrageous “six to eight slices of rye bread a day” advice. You’ll hear what’s genuinely useful, what’s unrealistic in real life, and how to build a gut-friendly routine that goes beyond just “eat more fibre”. In product spotlight, the ladies share their new favourite dip for summer entertaining, Yumi’s Capsicum & Roasted Cashew, and explain why it beats many cream-cheese-based dips nutritionally. They also give practical platter strategies to keep portions, costs and calories in check without feeling like you’re on a diet at the party. Finally, they tackle a listener question about berberine, the supplement being pushed online as “nature’s Ozempic”. Leanne and Susie explain what the science really shows for blood sugar and weight, the doses used in research, why side effects are more common at effective doses, and why it is absolutely not equivalent to GLP-1 medications. They share the simple, proven strategies that do more for metabolic health than chasing a miracle capsule. In this episode: Fasting and female physiology: why skipping breakfast can tank performance, worsen cravings and backfire for many active women, and when a gentle overnight fast may still have benefits. New constipation guidelines: the role of kiwi fruit, mineral-rich water and magnesium, why “more and more fibre” isn’t always the answer, and realistic ways to get things moving again. Summer platter upgrade: a healthier capsicum and cashew dip, smart portion tricks, and how to build a party platter that tastes amazing without blowing your goals or your budget. Berberine under the microscope: why calling it “natural Ozempic” is misleading, what it can and can’t do for blood glucose, and when you’re better off with lifestyle changes or prescribed medication. Whole kiwifruit, especially the green variety, is now recognized as one of the few foods with strong clinical evidence for relieving chronic constipation when eaten daily The most effective intake is two kiwifruits per day, maintained consistently for two to four weeks; this amount supports measurable improvement in stool softness and frequency without the side effects of stimulant laxatives Kiwi works through a unique combination of water-holding fiber and the enzyme actinidin, which together enhance digestion, hydration, and intestinal motility for smoother, more regular elimination People with infrequent or difficult bowel movements often find kiwi easier to stick with than prunes or psyllium because of its taste, texture, and natural sweetness, helping them stay consistent long enough to see results For best results, begin with a three-day at-home trial — one kiwi with breakfast and one with dinner — track your comfort and bowel pattern, and continue for four weeks if improvement begins within the first few days
