The Season 3 finale of the All In: Student Pathways Forward podcast features an engaging panel discussion with three inspiring students and graduates enrolled in or having completed high quality credential programs from different community and technical colleges: Lucy Briseno, a current student at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon; Monique Sallis, a current student at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, and an apprentice with Aon; and Cha Zong Yang, a graduate of Gateway Technical College in Racine, Wisconsin.Throughout the conversation, these students share their experiences participating in innovative, high-quality credential programs at their colleges that have helped shape their career pathways. They highlight the resources, supports, and services from their respective colleges and employers that have made an impact on their progress and success. From knowledgeable, dedicated, and accessible faculty to work-based learning opportunities to available financial assistance and strong career services, the panelists offer a firsthand perspective on what makes a difference for today's learners. The students also provide thoughtful recommendations for college leaders, policymakers, employers and other students based on their own experiences. Their insights offer a compelling call to action for strengthening pathways that connect education, employment, and lifelong success. These three remarkable individuals previously shared their community/technical college stories and insights this past fall at national and Oregon state conferences as part of plenary student panel discussions. Cha Zong spoke at the National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers (NCATC) conference in September about short-term industry recognized, advanced technology programs and unique student supports such as the Metallica Scholars Initiative. Monique joined the student panel at the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE) conference in October in Minneapolis on transformative workforce education programs, including apprenticeships, that offer pathways from college into careers. Lastly, Lucy offered her perspective during the student panel at the Oregon Pathways to Opportunity statewide summit in October on the critical topic of student basic needs insecurity and elaborated on different resources and supports that can help address common student realities. The podcast conversation was an opportunity to explore these topics in more detail and culminate this season featuring students in quality credential programs. The All In: Student Pathways Forward podcast is a part of Oregon's participation in the National Skills Coalition SkillSPAN network and supported by the Lumina Foundation.
From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Take your valentine somewhere that's green Writer and art lover Susan Montag recommends the work of Theatre 55, a Twin Cities-based theater company whose shows all feature casts of actors over age 55. Their production of the musical “Little Shop of Horrors” is playing at the Gremlin Theatre in St. Paul through Feb. 22. She's particularly looking forward to hearing vocalist Patricia Lacy, who is known for her work with Luther Vandross and with Sounds of Blackness, sing out “Feed me, Seymour,” when she plays the hungry plant from outer space, Audrey II. Susan says: I've seen a lot of the Theatre 55 shows. They are always so much fun. I like to see on the stage the folks who represent someone in my age group, showing that people over 55 are still very vibrant, very energetic and have a lot of talent to share!— Susan MontagTake your Valentine to see a rom-com play in Duluth MacKenzie McCullum is a writer and podcaster living in the Twin Cities, and she suggests taking your Valentine to see a Minnesota-original rom-com play at Zeitgeist Theater in Duluth. “String” opens tonight and runs through Feb. 22. There is an ASL-interpreted performance Wednesday, Feb. 19. The play was a runner-up for the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Comedy Playwriting Award. MacKenzie says: I like to say that this play is like your favorite Nancy Meyers or Nora Ephron romantic comedy that you see on screen, but it's on stage. It's just a beautiful showcasing of genuine love that you can find every day. It's an unlikely courtship between a poet and a pizza delivery boy. It's a great ensemble play: there are lots of great characters that will make you laugh out loud. The playwright, Jessica Lind Peterson, is a Duluth native. She actually wrote this play while she was in school at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She went on to co-found Yellow Tree Theater based in Osseo. “String” had kind of a life of its own in productions all over the country, and now it is back in Duluth for the 20th anniversary.— MacKenzie McCullumMatch made in heaven: Mathematics + art Freelance mathematics writer Barry Cipra of Northfield recommends a solo art show that celebrates the connections between mathematics and art. John Shier's exhibit “From Order to Chaos” features visual art created from equations. The show at the Steeple Center in Rosemount runs through March, with an artist reception and talk on Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Barry points out art and mathematics are both fundamentally creative endeavors, adding that John is part of a long tradition of artists using mathematical thinking to create their work. Leonardo da Vinci, anyone? Barry offers this introduction: John Shier's a retired physicist. He taught for many years at Normandale Community College here in the Twin Cities, and has been doing his own kind of art, using equations and algorithms to create interesting, colorful [works], everything from landscapes to completely abstract works. He also uses a lot of randomness. He calls it stochastic geometry — a term of art in the mathematical world. You let chance play a big role in what you get. He then, of course, uses his own eye to make selections. If he doesn't like what the computer produces, he'll try it again and see if he gets something that looks better.— Barry Cipra

Twin Cities pastor and Normandale InterVarsity alum, Steve, chats with Jon about obstacles and practical approaches to getting connected with a church. If you're a post-college adult who's struggled to feel connected with a church community, this episode is for you!
Protestors were out in force across the Twin Cities this weekend. Some protests were in solidarity with Asian Americans killed in Atlanta last week, while others were a continuation of the demand for justice for George Floyd and other lives taken by police. Dolal Idd's father, Bayle Gelle, stood in front of the Governor's mansion Sunday pleading for State officials to intervene in his son's case. Dolal was killed by Minneapolis Police in December 2020 just one mile away from where George Floyd took his last breath.“I don't care how long it takes,” said Gelle. “I will never ever ever shut my mouth and I will never stop my struggle until I get justice for my son.”Dolal Idd, 23, was Somali American. He was enrolled in classes at Normandale Community College at the time of his death. The police have released disturbing footage of their raid on Dolal Idd's home after he was shot; his parents and siblings say they were terrorized. Jaylani Hussein, executive director of CAIR Minnesota, said the case should be reassigned to a special prosecution team as was done for the George Floyd case.“There's a lot of people who think we are protesting aimlessly. No, we are protesting with a purpose. We have eight bills we are trying to pass in the house in the State of Minnesota.”Meanwhile, jury selection for the Derek Chauvin trial continues. So far 13 people have been selected to serve on the jury. Judge Cahill stated Friday he now expects the court to select up to 16 jurors, with as many as four alternates. And in case you missed it, two big rulings were made Friday. The judge denied a change of venue request and a motion to delay the trial. However he did rule to allow the defense to submit details of a previous arrest of George Floyd as evidence. Join host Elise Marquam Jahns and Isaac Lidsky for an amazing hour of inspiration. Isaac Lidsky may very well possess the most eclectic resume in business. He has been a child television star, a Supreme Court clerk (for Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg), and the founder of several businesses. He graduated from Harvard at age 19 and Harvard Law School in 2004. Perhaps most striking, Lidsky is only 40, and he is blind. Born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare degenerative disease of the retina, from age 12 to 25, he slowly lost his sight. Neither his youth nor his blindness has limited him. Lidsky's recently published book, "Eyes Wide Open," explains the powerful insight that inspired him to achieve his most ambitious dreams despite losing sight to a blinding disease. Today he is dedicated to helping others live and lead well-empowered, mindful, and accountable lives. Listen to his TED Talk (which gained over 1 million views within the first 20 days of release.) In 2015, when the award-winning journalist John Leland set out on behalf of The New York Times to meet members of America’s fastest-growing age group, he anticipated learning of challenges, of loneliness, and of the deterioration of body, mind, and quality of life. But the elders he met took him in an entirely different direction. Despite disparate backgrounds and circumstances, they each lived with a surprising lightness and contentment. The reality Leland encountered upended contemporary notions of aging, revealing the late stages of life as unexpectedly rich and the elderly as incomparably wise. Join host Elise Marquam Jahns and John Leland as they uncover what defines happiness for this aging group. "Happiness Is a Choice You Make" is an enduring collection of lessons that emphasizes, above all, the extraordinary influence we wield over the quality of our lives. With humility, heart, and wit, Leland has crafted a sophisticated and necessary reflection on how to “live better”—informed by those who have mastered the art. Jeffrey Stenbom: Coping with PTSD, Connecting with Other Veterans through Kilnformed Glass In the aftermath of 9/11, Jeffrey Stenbom felt compelled to act and joined the U.S. Army. Stationed in Germany, he was deployed to Kosovo and sent to Iraq for the second year of the war. As a cavalry scout, forward reconnaissance or “finding the bad guys” became his daily routine for the next three and a half years during the height of the conflict. There were crises on the home front as well. While serving in Iraq, Stenbom missed both the birth of his first son and the death of his sister and only sibling. A combination of deployment and emotional upheaval triggered post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and Stenbom was discharged from the Army and returned stateside in January 2004. Back home, Stenbom tried to make a new life for himself as he struggled with anger issues caused by his PTSD. By chance, he discovered kilnforming glass in a class offered at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, where he was pursuing the last class required for his associate of arts degree. The passion, drive and focus inspired by fusing helped Stenbom manage his PTSD. It also helped him recognize that he wanted to build a future incorporating both art and teaching. The artist earned his BFA in glass and sculpture and a complementary BS in art education from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. A desire to teach at all levels inspired Stenbom to apply to graduate school at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Stenbom’s thesis show at Tulane, entitled Thank You, included four large installation pieces that came together as an exhibit. The show included large, clear, cast glass dog tags suspended from an acrylic chain with a blown glass clasp. Kiln cast glass combat boots were reflected in a cube of one-way mirrors atop a ground of discarded brass rifle shells. There was also an interactive glass ground with imprints of army boots over which visitors could fit their own steps and a flag woven of U.S. military uniforms. “The concept behind the exhibit developed from a research fellowship on symbolism and iconology. My goal was to be more effective in how I communicate symbolically with my own art. I then considered symbols that are iconic within the culture of the military and decided to use those things to draw the viewer in to consider the piece overall.” The largest piece Stenbom has created to date includes 7,300 cast glass dog tags and was installed on a wall of the Bellevue Museum, Bellevue, Washington. Titled Every Year, the piece is a startling representation of the number of veterans who commit suicide each year. Powerful symbolism and iconology define Stenbom’s current work in glass. Residencies at The Studio at The Corning Museum of Glass, Pilchuck Glass School and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls have provided fertile ground to advance his ideas. Now instructing, in 2020 the artist will teach kilncasting at Urban Glass, Brooklyn, New York, and 3D design as well as fused glass at Normandale Community College. His work will be exhibited in A New State of Matter: Contemporary Glass, at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Rapids, MI, beginning on January 25, 2020. After putting together a 25 year financial plan for retirement, and talking with hundreds of men and women around the U.S., Becky Kueker knew there were some nagging questions many of us had about how to prepare for retirement. In her first book, Hiding in My Pajamas, Becky provides a thought-provoking, but non-traditional, fun approach to planning for retirement. Her book is a brutally candid look at a 25-year plan to retirement from a woman’s perspective. Join host Elise Marquam Jahn and Dr. Stuart Brown. Trained in general and internal medicine, psychiatry and clinical research, Dr. Brown first discovered the importance of play by discerning its absence in a carefully studied group of homicidal young males. He later became founding Clinical Director and Chief of Psychiatry at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and an Associate Professor at UCSD in San Diego, California. During his clinical career, he interviewed thousands of people to capture their play profiles. His cataloging of their profiles demonstrated the active presence of play in the accomplishments of the very successful and also identified negative consequences that inevitably accumulate in a play-deprived life. He believed that play could be the key to discovering the giftedness that is in everyone. With the support of the National Geographic Society and Jane Goodall, Dr. Brown could see play as a long evolved behavior important for well-being and survival of animals. He subsequently came to understand that humans are uniquely designed by nature to enjoy and participate in play throughout life. To Watch The Movie and get Influenzinum: www.realimmunity.org To work with Cilla for homeopath andHomeoprophylaxis as well as the free library: www.worldwidechoice.org How To Naturally Avoid The Flu http://learntruehealth.com/flu It’s flu season again, and lots of people are getting sick with the unpredictable change of weather. But don’t scramble for the pharmaceutical shelves just yet. Because there’s a natural way of addressing the flu and avoid getting a flu shot. And my returning guest, Cilla Whatcott is the best person to teach us how to recover from the flu naturally. 2012 Flu Vaccine Study First of all, Cilla Whatcott reveals that getting a flu shot does not have excellent odds. But it’s going to help you. She cites a 2012 study by Cowling and Fang, who learned that when you get the flu shot, it produces antibodies for that particular strain of the flu. But on the other hand, it compromises your innate arm of immunity. “So, your cell-mediated immunity becomes more vulnerable to all the other circulating viruses. While you may have current protection from the current flu, you are opening up your susceptibility to all the other viruses that are circulating,” Cilla Whatcott explains. She adds, “All the flu report we hear on media is misleading. Flu-like viruses are out there, and they are not the flu. Getting sick and getting well is part of being healthy. It’s not ever getting sick. It’s essential to exercise our immune system.” Effect Of Vaccines As for other vaccines compromising the innate arm of the immune system, Cilla Whatcott says this is where dis-regulation takes place. When you emphasize one half of the immune system, it compromises the other side. Because ultimately, true real immunity is based on a balance. “Vaccines are intended to create inflammation. But unfortunately, it’s indiscriminate. This inflammation takes place you see a dis-regulation of the immune system,” said Cilla Whatcott. “The immune system is designed to recognize a pathogen, raise an immune response, discharge, then resolution. As the system goes through those steps, true immunity is built.” Furthermore, Cilla Whatcott explains that when you inject a child with eight diseases at one time, you are confusing the system. Because Nature doesn’t deliver eight diseases at once. “You deliver eight diseases at once through a needle, inject it into the system instead of to the mucous membrane as Nature does, and add more stuff to inflame the immune system,” Cilla Whatcott said. “With that, the system is going to try to discharge things by raising its inflammatory response.” Right Food Choices We have always stressed in past episodes that food can be medicine. If we eat the right kind of foods, it heals and nourishes our body significantly. Cilla Whatcott says that by having a whole food, organic diet, it’s a great way to get vitamin A. It’s in all the orange vegetables, sweet potatoes, yams, and carrots. Vitamin D is also a critical component of healing. Because these two vitamins can help your immune capabilities. Oscillococcinum There are over-the-counter homeopathic products, and the one Cilla Whatcott recommends is Oscillococcinum. She says it works better once you start contracting the flu. But Cilla Whatcott says there are also some other homeopathic remedies that you can use. Choosing a homeopathic remedy is based on specific symptoms. She says Oscillococcinum is broader, so you can take Oscillococcinum with any symptoms. Arsenicum But you if have some gut virus, vomiting and have diarrhea, Cilla Whatcott recommends taking Arsenicum. For those who are unaware, Arsenicum is made from arsenic. “Because if you took material arsenic, you would be vomiting and have diarrhea as well as all the other symptoms, like feeling chilly and anxious,” said Cilla Whatcott. “None of our homeopathic remedies have any molecule of material substance in them. They are completely energetic. Their frequency can’t do any harm.” Aspirin Aspirin, on the other hand, was newly discovered by 1918-1919. And it was a wonder drug. Because according to Cilla Whatcott, you could give the same aspirin to many people to reduce fever. “You didn’t have to take a case. The predominant method of medicine that time in homeopathy in the early 1900s required taking the individual case,” said Cilla Whatcott. Mortality Rate When you reduce the fever for flu, it very quickly goes to the lungs. Spanish flu, in particular, goes to the lungs and people were dead in 24 hours. For allopathic medicine, the mortality rate was logged at 28%. In contrary, the homeopathic patients did not have a lot of deaths because they weren’t reducing the fever. They were treating the symptoms of the flu, and it was very successful. “The goal is not to eliminate every symptom. But rather the goal is to support the body to balance itself. Because that’s how we’re designed to find that balance. And it will, as long as you don’t start suppressing every symptom,” Cilla Whatcott said. Influenzinum Cilla Whatcott reveals that there’s a double-blind placebo-controlled study out of Brazil for Influenzinum. In the study, Influenzinum was given to six hundred children under the age of five. They found that there were no injuries, no side effects, there was a success rate reducing symptoms. The frequency of catching the flu was also less. “Influenzinum can be sold in many different ways and many different preparations. You can find it online from some places where it is typed by the actual year or season for that pill,” said Cilla Whatcott. “I like to use a combination of historical flu, bird flu, influenza A and B, plus something called Bacillinum. This combination is good every single year.” She adds, “Nothing prevents the flu 100%. We are building your natural immunity so that you are more capable of resisting things.” Homeoprophylaxis Vs. Homeopathic Remedy Classical homeopathy is based on a person’s lifestyle and living environment. Cilla Whatcott says it waits until you are sick, and gathers all the data before determining anything. “Homeoprophylaxis is given prior so that you familiarize the individual with the frequency of the disease and epidemic. And homeoprophylaxis is made from the specific pathogen that is causing that particular disease,” said Cilla Whatcott. Homeoprophylaxis is not typically measured with double-blind placebo-controlled studies. It is in long-term studies where long-term health outcomes can be determined. “This is called effectiveness instead of efficacy. Efficacy is about building antibodies. Effectiveness is about taking the long view and seeing what happens to this population over time,” Cilla Whatcott explains. Feature Length Documentaries To know more about real immunity, Cilla Whatcott has an amazing three-part video series which you can rent from her official website. The second one called Passage is already available for a 3-day rental at $9.99. If you want to watch all three, the first one is called The Quest for Real Immunity. It covers the fear surrounding disease, reveals the relationship between humans and viruses, and provides insight into trusting your intuition. Passage to Real Immunity tackles the safe and effective alternative to vaccines called homeoprophylaxis. This part is packed with interviews with doctors who use homeoprophylaxis including Dr. Isaac Golden, a leading researcher. There are also interviews with parents talking about the wonders of homeopathy. Also watch out for the interview with Del Bigtree, an expert who speaks on listening to your intuition as a parent. The third part, Choosing Real Immunity is slated to be released in 2019. And it will focus on a variety of tools to add to your immunity resources. Effectivity of Homeoprophylaxis Cilla Whatcott says no method is 100% effective. She said the original study was done over 15 years studying 3,000 children. It found that the HP kids had more robust immunity and better long-term health outcomes than even the organic eaters. “A child going through homeoprophylaxis treatment depends on the susceptibility of the individual. Some who have greater susceptibility is probably because their ancestors had respiratory illnesses,” shares Cilla Whatcott. She adds, “So when you take homeoprophylaxis, it satisfies a certain susceptibility. You become less susceptible to catching that particular disease. Your immune system knows how to mount an immune response and address it.” Critical Vaccine Studies Book Cilla Whatcott cited a great reference for vaccines. It’s called Critical Vaccine Studies by Neil Z. Miller. The book came out in 2016. The book shows studies pointing to the fact that benign childhood diseases like measles, chicken pox, and mumps, play a role in our long-term immunity. They help prevent chronic disease, tumors, and cancers. “There are many benefits from natural disease. Natural disease is what governs herd immunity, not vaccines,” said Cilla Whatcott. “It’s when the natural disease comes through that we develop herd immunity because that gives us life-long immunity. The antibodies produced by the body does not last a lifetime that’s why they keep adding boosters to the schedule.” Family Homeopathy Care Website For those who want to sign-up for courses and look at other offerings, link to the Family Homeopathy Care Website. There is a free knowledge vault containing over a hundred documents and divided into chapters. Which you can download. You can also sign up for classes where you can access anytime once you have an account. The course on nine remedies for the flu is worth checking out. Classes cost $12.99 and are usually in Powerpoint format. Common Remedies for Influenza and Flu-like Symptoms Cilla Whatcott says Gelsemium is for incredible weakness and fatigue, eyes half closed, and headaches. Generally speaking, homeopathy is dosed while you have the symptoms. “You give three doses, half or an hour apart. And if there is an improvement, you wait and watch because your body will move in the direction of cure,” said Cilla Whatcott. If there is no change whatsoever, Cilla Whatcott says it may be because you’re on the wrong remedy. Hence, you need to re-assess the case. Plus, if you fall asleep, that’s a great sign. Because the body heals when it’s sleeping. “Stop taking the remedy when you are 70 to 80% better. If the symptoms change, you might have to change remedies,” advises Cilla Whatcott. “Don’t touch the pellets with your fingers. Tap them on the cap and pop into your mouth. Keep them away from high heat, microwave or strong-smelling things like essentials oils because those can stop the action of the remedies.” Taking Responsibility Ultimately, Cilla Whatcott stresses that we have to take responsibility for our health. You figure it out. It’s not a knee-jerk reaction. “That requires a learning curve which not everyone wants to do, but that is what lead me to where I am now. Medical school is not teaching some of the things that I see parents learning today on their own,” said Cilla Whatcott. She also says that our body has that headache or symptom to balance things out. It’s an expression of the disease. When you take something pharmaceutical, you’re stopping that expression. “When you take homeopathy, it’s just a frequency like music, prayer and radio signals. You are not physically manipulating the physiology of the body. You are simply providing a frequency to encourage the body to do what it knows how to do,” said Cilla Whatcott. Road To Recovery Cilla Whatcott says illness comes along in our lives with a message. So, respect the illness. Take the time you need and be good to yourself. She also says that one good thing to use for recovery is cell salts. And there is a combination of all 12 cell salts called Bioplasma. Bioplasma is available via 1-800-homeopathy.com. Ideally, it is best to take Bioplasma at the end of the flu. Take Bioplasma a couple of times a day for three to five days to reboot your system. Intake one cell salt at a time, then more effective if you target it at the actual need. “My goal is to educate and empower parents to know they have choices. You’re the expert for your child. No one loves your child as you do,” said Cilla Whatcott. “Your intention is always for their good. There are no real mistakes. You’re always making choices based on what you know. So, the goal is to know all you can to make informed choices.” Bio Cilla Whatcott is a board-certified classical homeopath with a B.A. from Arizona State University, a diploma from the four-year professional program at Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy, and a Ph.D. in Homeopathy. She is an instructor at Normandale Community College and the author of“There Is a Choice: Homeoprophylaxis,” and co-author of “The Solution – Homeoprophylaxis.” Whatcott is also the executive director of Worldwide Choice. When Janie Bowthorpe was 27 years old, she had 8 illnesses in nine months culminating with pneumonia. The same chronic illness scenario occurred 2 years later after the birth of her third child. By 31, she was diagnosed with borderline hypothyroid and put on Synthroid, but her pain and suffering continued for many more years. By 2002, she finally began the process of applying for Social Security Disability. It was during this time Janie realized the problem was most likely her thyroid. When she switched to natural desiccated thyroid, her life changed. She rapidly regained her energy and stamina and saw all her symptoms disappear--which became the impetus for the Stop the Thyroid Madness blog and book. Janie’s goal is to be a catalyst for a complete change in thyroid treatment and management by dedicating her work to serve millions of thyroid patients all over the world. To teach us more about what homeopathy is, I’m so thrilled Cilla Whatcott is again on the show for the third time to explain to us everything you need to know about this amazing method of natural healing. Discovering Homeopathy Cilla Whatcott has guested on episode 137 and episode 155 where she elaborated on how her homeopathy journey started. She describes herself as a classical Homeopath who has four children — three were adopted from Russia, China, and Taiwan, and one is biological. She recalls all three kids had problems like asthma, kidney reflux, and migraines. One of her daughters, in particular, had a vaccine injury and suffered from aseptic meningitis. So early on, Cilla Whatcott realized that it was ultimately up to her to take care of her kids. A ray of hope happened when Cilla Whatcott’s pediatrician sent her to a Homeopath. Eventually, her children’s health improved considerably. Because of that, Cilla Whatcott decided to study homeopathy. So instead of pursuing a career in dance after applying for a Fullbright scholarship in Europe, she studied in homeopathic school for four years. “Initial research just led me into vaccine science. Looking at the studies and attending conferences, it was just asking all the deeper questions about vaccines,” said Cilla Whatcott. “After I attended homeopathy school, I discovered homeoprophylaxis and recognized an amazing alternative to educate the immune system.” What A Fever Means Cilla Whatcott has a new video documentary coming out called Real Immunity. The 2-part documentary one of the topics extensively covered is the subject regarding fever. Among the experts, Cilla Whatcott included in the film is Dr. Debra Gambrell who I have guested on my podcast’s episode 164. I generally know to have a fever is good because it is a distinct signal to warn you that something is going on in your body. Some people deal with fevers by soaking in an ice bath. And some people wrap themselves up to sweat out the heat which was what my father used to do. In my episode with Debra Gambrell, she links fevers to neurological development, and that is a necessary function of development. And when we suppress a fever, we’re inhibiting the brain and all the nerves in the body. Heavy metals in the body also do the same thing. That’s why we end up dealing with memory issues. Cilla Whatcott also shares that Naturopath Dr. Kendra Becker is also in the film. And she gives the cutest example of first-time fever with the baby and how the parents are ready to lose their mind. She narrates that once parents come out of the clinic after 72 hours, they usually look like they walked on fire. “Fever is a natural mechanism that nature put in place, for us to create natural viral antibodies. So when you have a fever, your body is producing national antibodies to fight whatever the infection is. And then provide you with lifelong immunity to that particular virus,” said Cilla Whatcott. What A Fever Does Cilla Whatcott adds that a fever also resets the gut. A fever resets our system, develops antibodies, and discharges toxins. It is a keynote of that circular process exercising the immune system. It is the basis of building a lifelong immunity. Fever And Drugs To suppress a fever with drugs, Cilla Whatcott says we’re only driving the pathology deeper into the organism. So in the film, Cilla Whatcott featured something she calls the health helix which offers a lot of information and knowledge value about fevers and how to treat it. “If you suppress the fever, discharge, and the symptoms, it is driven deeper into the system, and you see a deeper pathology,” explains Cilla Whatcott. Other Conditions Cilla Whatcott says that another issue is how we commonly deal with asthma and respiratory symptoms. She said we might see it go deeper into behavioral symptoms like ADHD, depression, and anxiety. We will eventually see the trajectory of health going downwards. “If you remove suppressive toxins and have clean water, air, food and an emotional environment that is supportive, then you have all the components to regenerate,” said Cilla Whatcott. Homeoprophylaxis Like what Cilla Whatcott stressed in two of our past episodes, homeoprophylaxis is a subset of homeopathy where they use different remedies. It is utilized for a lot of health conditions in many countries. Highly effective with no side effects, it has no deaths, and it doesn’t compromise innate immunity. “It is completely unprofitable for pharma, inexpensive to make and easy to distribute. Even unlicensed personnel can distribute it,” Cilla Whatcott said. “It applies to all genders, all ages, all species and mutated viruses. So when something mutates and a new vaccine has to be developed, it’s not the same compared to homeoprophylaxis. Between effectiveness, safety, and eco-suitable, you can’t beat it.” My past guest, Dr. Carolyn Dean on episode 227, has the same conviction. She encourages people to continue the fight in implementing safe and natural alternatives to treat various health conditions. Truth About Vaccines Those who have been following my podcast would recall that I mention Ty Bollinger’s “The Truth About Vaccines” video documentary. A lot of people are afraid to watch it, perhaps because they aren’t emotionally ready to learn the truth. But the documentary is something everyone should watch because it teaches us how to build immunity. In my opinion, Ty Bollinger did a fabulous job. The video includes interviews with celebrated experts. Educating people to veer away from vaccines is hard work, but some doctors strive to push that cause. I had Dr. Paul Thomas in episode 224, who has over 13,000 patients in his Portland, Oregon practice. He says most of his patients are unvaccinated. Dr. Paul Thomas shared that during the most massive influenza outbreak they had recently, not one of his kids got the flu. He teaches the patients what food to eat and not to eat. And to help oversee his patients, he has pediatrician Dr. Linda Baker in his office who does homeoprophylaxis, who incidentally, is a colleague of Cilla Whatcott. “Ten or twelve years ago, I was teaching Vaccine Information. It was so non-controversial at that time when a local community college allowed me to teach the course,” recalls Cilla Whatcott. “Along came a time when the community college said we couldn’t hold this class anymore. Because they were getting pressure from the health department. So now, when Cilla Whatcott teaches in different venues, it is a welcome surprise that more parents now know a lot of information. Apparently, more parents now do their research. “The societal shift was fascinating. It’s a result of the internet, a result of people seeing injuries, and being motivated to step and do what best for their kids. Things are changing,” said Cilla Whatcott. Mission Behind Real Immunity Documentary To be able to provide more information to the public, Cilla Whatcott also made a 2-part video documentary called Real Immunity. Her goal was to make something empowering and supportive because she genuinely believes that to raise consciousness, you need to associate with others on the same wavelength as you are. And that strengthens us in such a way as to bring others up. “And fear is one of the lowest rungs on the ladder of consciousness. Fear doesn’t motivate us and instead, squelches us,” said Cilla Whatcott. “So what I wanted to do is make a film that first and foremost, dispelled fear and teach people how to access that inner wisdom, the intelligence of life or spirit.” Cilla Whatcott also wanted to provide method tools through her film. She says everybody’s toolkit is unique to them. So to do that, we need to do the research. The underlying theme of the movie means that we can’t rely on someone else to take care of our health because we are born with the gift of immunity. First part of the documentary is called, “Quested for Real Immunity,” while the second part is called, “Passage To Real Immunity.” The video will be free for 36 hours, and it will be available in DVD form. There is also an opportunity for people to bring the film to their hometown through the Real Immunity website. People can input their zip code to search for the nearest local theater. A theater screening of the film can be organized provided it reaches the minimum number ticket sales. Plus, the one who was able to raise the minimum ticket sales will be given 5% of the proceeds. Making The Film Cilla Whatcott says that the visual and auditory message has a powerful impact. She has taught for years in the community. But she realized there is no way she could educate in the same way compared to making a film. That became her motivation to teach through a new medium. She originally planned to divide the documentary to seven or ten parts. Then the series shifted to four parts and now finalized to two parts. The first episode is what Cilla Whatcott described as a foundation episode and scheduled to launch on February 22 this year. It dispels the fear and talks about intuition. It also takes a more in-depth look at what makes a competent practitioner and a good patient. The second episode coming out later this year dives into methods. Cilla Whatcott clarifies that she’s not going to tell the viewer what to do but instead utilize interviews with experts to talk about Chinese medicine, functional medicine, gemmotherapy, homeopathy, and homeoprophylaxis. “It’s up to the viewer to explore and make those choices. I feel strongly about free urgency. Rather than expecting people to look towards someone else, and say you need to do it. Providing choices is better,” Cilla Whatcott said. Cilla Whatcott also made a special mention of Dr. Jeanne Ohm from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. According to Cilla Whatcott, Dr. Jeanne Ohm dives into what is the intelligence of life. She is an excellent resource person if anyone wants to get more information on making the right medical choices for kids. “More than anything, I want to give parents support as the experts for their child. And that they can trust their choices because they have their child’s welfare at heart,” said Cilla Whatcott. Challenges In Making The Film Cilla Whatcott shares that there are a lot of hits and misses in the making of the film. She went as far as taking an online film course and took time to look for videographers. It was hard soliciting funds, getting the right videographer and marketing team but Cilla Whatcott says the effort was worth it. “I had great relationships with really fabulous people that I respected. That was the easy part. And it is exciting to know that I completed something I envisioned,” said Cilla Whatcott. Power Of Film Among the experts Cilla Whatcott included in the film, she said the interviews with Dr. Andrew Wakefield was most interesting. British gastroenterologist Dr. Andrew Wakefield earned the media moniker, “Father of Anti-Vaccine Movement,” after his controversial research linking MMR vaccine and autism came out. In Dr. Andrew Wakefield’s paper, he mentioned his discovery of measles virus in the bowels of children and testimonials of mothers who saw changes in their kids after being vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. His paper suggested the need for more studies and recommended that the vaccine is given separately. A series of events occurred and Dr. Andrew Wakefield eventually lost his license to practice in the United Kingdom. He eventually moved to the United States and began other types of research on autism apart from making films. One of the films Dr. Andrew Wakefield made was titled, “Vaxed.” It exposed the fraud that took place within the CDC and the MMR study. Dr. Andrew Wakefield also made the film, “Who Killed Alex Spourdalakis,” which is about an autistic teenager who was given medication for his condition and the hospital would not take him off the medication even if it had adverse effects. To end the suffering, the mother finally killed her child and tried to kill herself. The mother was later on charged in court for first-degree murder. During the progression of the case, the prosecuting attorney found out Dr. Andrew Wakefield was filming the child the whole time. The lawyer asked for footage and eventually, the charges were dropped against the mother. Bio Cilla Whatcott is a board-certified classical homeopath with a B.A. from Arizona State University, a diploma from the four-year professional program at Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy, and a Ph.D. in Homeopathy. She is an instructor at Normandale Community College and the author of“There Is a Choice: Homeoprophylaxis,” and co-author of “The Solution – Homeoprophylaxis.” Whatcott is also the executive director of Worldwide Choice. She likewise offers individualized homeoprophylaxis programs for adults and children. Whatcott has been a guest lecturer in France, Scotland, Ireland, Indonesia, the USA, and Canada, and featured in episode 7 of The Truth about Vaccines. She has organized and directed international conferences in 2015 and 2016 about homeoprophylaxis. Whatcott also has published articles in several periodicals and magazines. She likewise has a certification as a CEASE therapist for reversing vaccine injury. Get Connected With Dr. Cilla Whatcott! http://LearnTrueHealth.com/vaccines Watch the trailer! http://realimmunity.org https://worldwidechoice.org Developing Real Immunity http://learntruehealth.com/real-immunity/ It has been the norm for decades to have ourselves vaccinated, thinking this would protect us from diseases. But do vaccines do the job? Apparently, more and more studies show that vaccines do more harm than develop real immunity. To those who are seeking real immunity, well, today's your lucky day. For today's episode, I'm having a repeat guest---Dr. Cilla Whatcott! For the listeners who weren't able to catch Dr. Cilla Whatcott on episode 137 here on Learn True Health, my guest is a staunch advocate of homeoprophylaxis. Homeoprophylaxis helps build real immunity to infections. Most importantly, it is safe and efficient alternative compared to vaccines. The Truth About Vaccines Whatcott is set to launch her Real Immunity video documentary series in 2018. While it is currently still in production, I'm inviting everyone to watch "The Truth About Vaccine," by Ty Bollinger. Like his other project, "The Truth About Cancer" video documentary series, the educational films are both available on my website. I find it so shocking that a significant majority remain clueless about the gravity of the controversy surrounding vaccines. Did you know a main ingredient of vaccines is using aborted babies? Yes, you read it right. Babies! And it doesn't stop there. Vaccines contain mercury, heavy metals, glyphosate and other harmful components. From what I heard, "The Truth About Vaccines," will be offered online for free. Hence, please do watch the series and share it with someone who you know could benefit from it. So is there real immunity using natural methods? The answer is a big YES! Furthermore, building immunity naturally does not cause disease. Dr. Cilla Whatcott's Mission "Mahatma Gandhi once said that the power elicited by fear is nowhere near as effective as the power elicited by love," said Whatcott. Whatcott firmly states that her primary goal is to provide a wealth of knowledge to parents about vaccines. She likewise aims to educate more people about homeoprophylaxis in particular. "This should be the mantra of all parents because, in Western medicine, fear drives us to take vaccines. And ultimately, our love for our children guides us in all the decisions that we make," Whatcott said. Effectiveness Of Homeoprophylaxis Homeoprophylaxis one form of immunity building. It is an integral part of developing real immunity naturally by at least 90%. "Our birthright is having a robust immunity. That's how nature created us. We gain that immunity through contact with bacteria and viruses," Whatcott said. "We also develop real immunity by making sure we have a healthy gut biome especially in the first two years of life." Apparently, Homeoprophylaxis is popular in countries like India, Mexico, Cuba and South America. It is, however, unfortunate that it is not widely popular in the United States yet. Alarming Statistics I empathize with Dr. Whatcott. Growing up in Canada and coming to live in the United States, I thought the culture and mindset would be the same. Boy, I was wrong. I had culture shock! It was a rude awakening when I found out that despite having to pay a substantial amount for health care, a lot of Americans suffer from a lot of health issues. Some of these problems are high infant mortality rate, cancer rate, obesity, and diabetes. Furthermore, a lot of us have to deal with seasonal allergies. But I realized that most of these illnesses are caused by an unhealthy diet. In fact, we think going to a doctor is health care when in fact it is merely disease management. Remaining Optimistic Whatcott, however, is hopeful that more people, especially parents, are slowly trying to choose natural alternatives for better health. She claims her client base is steadily rising since people now look for doctors who can connect with patients. "I have more parents coming to see me and who want to do it naturally. The mere fact that you can sit and listen to a client that is healing right there," said Whatcott. I likewise share Whatcott's frustration whenever I hear medical doctors giving the wrong drugs or administering the wrong dosage. What is even more appalling is that they hardly put importance in embracing a healthy diet. It is infuriating! Developing A Healthy Immune System Many factors lead to a healthy immune system. Like a smooth-running factory, real immunity entails having a good nutritional support and metabolism. "Doctors can't tell you about nutrition. They are not trained in nutrition at all. It is outside their scope of practice," Whatcott declares. Miller's Study Whatcott also mentions a significant study done by medical research journalist Neil Z. Miller. Miller's study on critical vaccines showed that measles, mumps, chicken pox, prevent chronic diseases. Furthermore, the study indicates that lymphomas, tumors, ovarian cancer are prevented when you develop measles, mumps, and chicken pox. Now, the big question is---"So why are we preventing ourselves from getting them?" Whatcott affirms that the three last health conditions are not deadly diseases. Western medicine stresses the need for us to be vaccinated to prevent those health conditions from happening. Furthermore, Whatcott says there was a surveillance study conducted about chicken pox in 1995. That time, the rate of shingles went up because chicken pox is a retro virus. "If the immune system is stressed, it can come out as shingles. But when you get an external boost from other people having chicken pox, it tones your immune system and keeps you healthy," explains Whatcott. Goldman's Findings Speaking of shingles, Whatcott mentions another significant study that was conducted by Dr. Gary Goldman. Goldman had a background in computer science and worked as a data analyst on the project. However, Goldman quit in 2002. Apparently, his superiors, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), were trying to suppress the findings on shingles. Consequently, he managed to have his study published in the Vaccine journal in 2003. The Truth About Flu Vaccines Whatcott also reveals another mind-blowing controversy. This time, about the flu vaccine. According to her, Cochrane Collaboration, a non-profit organization doing meta-analysis says the flu vaccine when administered to patients under the age of 2 years old, is no better than placebo. "The flu vaccine was proven by studies that it does not prevent flu-related hospitalizations. Bottomline, there is no benefit," Whatcott said. According to a study done in 2012, flu vaccine increases the antibodies for a particular strain. However, Whatcott says the innate arm of the immune system is compromised. Hence, people with the flu vaccine are more prone to pick up other varieties of flu strains. "Antibodies are not the gold standard of immunity. The gut biome, nutritional status, emotional environment are the things that build immunity," explains Whatcott. "Your innate health and immunity are what keeps you healthy long-term and prevents chronic disease," I strongly agree with what Whatcott said. Honestly, I think a flu shot might help you a little bit. But it disarms the immune system as a whole. That is why a lot of people nowadays are diagnosed with autoimmune disease. Real Immunity Video Documentary Whatcott's video project promises to be a wealth of information about how to develop real immunity naturally. Insights from Chinese medicine, functional medicine, and chiropractic methods will be included in the film. The documentary will likewise interview client testimonials and experts like Jeanne Ohm, editor of Pathways Magazine, as well as Dr. Andy Wakefield. Wakefield is a pediatric gastroenterologist who wrote a paper saying his study found measles virus in the bowels of the children who were given vaccination shots. Remote Practice Whatcott primarily holds practice in Minneapolis. With over a decade of helping families, her practice also extends to providing services online. Having changed the lives of many people over the years, Whatcott aims to educate more people about the dangers of vaccines. Promoting homeoprophylaxis is just one way of erasing the fear of omitting vaccines from our life. "Anything that we do just to maintain our health status is going to build immunity. The primary elements to achieve optimal health is through nutrition, exercise, sleep, healthy relationships and rational emotions," Whatcott said. Cilla Whatcott is a board-certified classical homeopath with a B.A. from Arizona State University, a diploma from the four-year professional program at Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy, and a Ph.D. in Homeopathy. She is an instructor at Normandale Community College and the author of“There Is a Choice: Homeoprophylaxis," and co-author of "The Solution - Homeoprophylaxis.” Whatcott is also the executive director of Worldwide Choice. Homeoprophylaxis http://learntruehealth.com/homeoprophylaxis/ Homeoprophylaxis: Safe Alternatives To Vaccines Today’s topic is close to my heart. Dr. Cilla Whatcott has a very deep understanding about educating our immune system how to combat disease without the use of vaccines and instead use homeoprophylaxis. Slow Realization Whatcott grew up in New Jersey, and her dad was an immigrant from Italy. Her mother died when she was 16 years, and she watched that process with what occurred within Western medicine surrounding her illness and her death. Whatcott’s father died when she was in her 20s, and she observed the same thing. Their death sowed the seeds of her interest in medicine. Whatcott wanted to have a large family. But when she married, she found out she couldn’t have kids, so Whatcott started adopting. She adopted a child from Taiwan, another from mainland China and Russia. So it was a surprise when Whatcott did end up having a biological child. Taking Matters At Her Hands Whatcott’s four kids had different illnesses. Nothing in conventional medicine completely cured them. Finally, she had a pediatrician in Washington who advised Whatcott to try homeopathy, particularly for her son’s asthma. Within six months, his asthma disappeared. Whatcott took her son with migraines, and it also disappeared. Her daughter who had kidney reflux never had a kidney infection anymore after getting healed by homeopathy. Whatcott was fascinated by homeopathy and decided to go back to school. She studied for four years in homeopathic school. The Power Of Homeopathy Whatcott’s father didn’t understand what the medical doctors told him. At one point, he misunderstood the doctor and thought the doctor said to him that he was cancer-free. So he came home and told Whatcott he was cured. He had a prognosis which gave him another year to live, but because he believed he was cured, he lived another fifteen years. “I saw the power of the doctor’s words being the medicine. People believe what they are told. Our health is not only physical. It involves our thoughts, emotions and our mind,” said Whatcott. Discovering Homeoprophylaxis With this information, homeopathy is such a deep curative form of medicine. I went on to study a subset of homeopathy which is homeoprophylaxis. When Whatcott adopted her daughter from China, she was 10 pounds at a year old and could barely hold up her head. Her pediatrician administered all her vaccines and one night got a high fever, had meningitis, and she almost died. Whatcott researched and found out that meningitis is the side effect of some of the vaccines. The MMR, that’s one of the side effects. So Whatcott went back to the pediatrician, and she denied it. That’s when Whatcott realized only she could really look out for what’s best for her children. “Based on a recent statistics, pediatricians make an average of half a million dollars or more if they vaccinate all their kid patients by the age of two,” Whatcott shares. “It cost around $400 per child.” Dr. Isaac Golden’s Program Dr. Isaac Golden developed a program in Australia. Homeoprophylaxis has been subjected to a 15-year ongoing trial and clinical study. The outcome of this research, including the efficacy and safety of homeoprophylaxis, are published in Dr. Golden’s Homeoprophylaxis – A Fifteen Year Clinical Study. “The aim of homeoprophylaxis is to introduce into the human system safe, homeopathic versions of particular diseases to naturally stimulate the immune system,” Whatcott said. “As a result, susceptibility to targeted diseases can be reduced.” The Program These are the components of the program developed by Dr. Golden: Four years of homeoprophylaxis remedies for the most commonly vaccinated diseases Individualized, 1-hour appointment, to explain the program Can be started at any time even if some vaccines have been given No more needles Additional remedies for individual needs (foreign travel, or disease outbreaks) No toxic substances Any necessary consultation during the program No side effects Homeopathy and Homeoprophylaxis Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine. It treats all chronic and acute disease very effectively. Homeoprophylaxis is a different principle. “Homeoprophylaxis is the use of diluted and potentized disease products which we call nosodes or materials from an animal, mineral or vegetable source,” said Whatcott. “It is to educate the immune system, before encountering the disease. Hence, there’s no such thing as a homeopathic vaccine. That does not exist.” Within classical homeopathy, the belief is, we look for something that is called genus epidemicus. And a genus epidemicus is when there’s an outbreak of an epidemic, you collect the data from a certain number of cases and you see what remedies work well with that epidemic. The problem is, you have to wait for everyone to get sick. Then you have to organize and coordinate data amongst homeopaths to determine genus epidemicus. After that, you distribute the homeopathic remedy to people who are ill. “Homeoprophylaxis precludes getting the disease. It educates the immune system before the disease comes around. You know you’re training the immune system because you see the results,” explained Whatcott. Side Effects Of Homeoprophylaxis First of all, we don’t see side effects but rather the immune response. Hence, after getting homeoprophylaxis, you are going to see the immune system wake up. And the way that it will look may be rosy cheeks, longer or shorter nap, runny nose or extra stool in the diaper. But after 24 hours, that will come down to a baseline. I see that in vaccinated children. Furthermore, when giving to adults, they usually say they have swollen glands, throat is itchy, and it will all be gone in 24 hours. Getting A Headstart to Good Health 1. Trust your gut. You have the ability to make wise choices for yourself and your children. 2. Reframe your view of viruses, fevers, and minor illnesses. We need these microorganisms to be healthy. 3. Pay attention to your diet and your thoughts – these are two mainstays of health. Lois Schadewald's interest in both science and pseudoscience rubbed off on her from her brilliant brother Robert J. Schadewald, a prolific author and debater. When Bob died a decade ago he left behind a legacy of published essays and book chapters, as well as much unpublished material including a complete manuscript on the history of the Flat Earth movement. Lois has seen to the publication of many of these pieces in the collection Worlds of their Own: A Brief History of Misguided Ideas; Creationism, Flat-Earthism, Energy Scams, and the Velikovsky Affair. In this episode of Point of Inquiry, Robert M. Price asks Lois to outline some of her brother's research in Flat Earth and Hollow Earth "science" as well as to relate some stories of his association with important "alternative science" figures like catastrophist Immanuel Velikovsky. Schadewald talks about her brother's unique approach to dealing with promoters of pseudoscience, and what he gained from it. She discusses the timeline of Bob's research interests and how he eventually made his way to studying creationism. Lois Schadewald is Professor of Chemistry at Normandale Community College in Minnesota, where she is also active with the Minnesota Atheists. Robert J. Schadewald (1943-2000) was a widely published science writer. His articles dealing with unorthodoxies of science and scholarship appeared in Science 80, Smithsonian, Technology Illustrated, and Skeptical Inquirer among others. He was a contributing author to six books, including The History of Science and Religion in the Western Tradition: An Encyclopedia (Garland Publishing, 2000). From 1986 until the mid-1990s, he served on the board of directors of the National Center for Science Education, including two years as president. He attended seven national creationism conferences, interviewed Immanuel Velikovsky, investigated perpetual motion machines, and was thrown out of the Flat Earth Society for having spherical tendencies. Bob was nationally recognized as an expert on creationism, perpetual motion, and flat Earthism.
