What if the most toxic thing in your home isn't a chemical—but a mindset? Clean living advocate and first-time author Lindsay Dahl returns to unpack the nuanced middle ground of wellness, environmental health, and personal agency. Together, we explore the emotional toll of trying to “do it all right,” the dangers of black-and-white thinking in the age of social media, and why real change takes both individual action and systemic accountability. We talk spatulas and seed oils, fast fashion and flame retardants, fear and freedom—and why being a pragmatist in today's digital landscape is both radical and necessary. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by wellness culture or simply want to think more critically about what's in your home and how it gets there, this conversation offers clarity, compassion, and a call to thoughtful action. 0:00 | Framing the Problem with Balance 2:20 | Education, Policy, and the Role of Media 5:40 | Health vs. Science: A Cultural Disconnect 8:06 | Control, Consumerism, and Systemic Change 11:25 | Fast Fashion as a Microcosm 14:12 | Inside “Cleaning House”: Book Preview 18:41 | The Cost of Speaking Up 23:38 | Reclaiming Community and Dialogue 26:25 | Closing and Call to Action Find Lindsay: lindsaydahl.com instagram.com/lindsay_dahl linkedin.com/in/lindsay-dahl-3617076 Pre-order Lindsay's book "Cleaning House: The Fight to Rid Our Homes of Toxic Chemicals" almost anywhere books are sold, releases 8/5/25 Find Stacy: realeverything.com instagram.com/realstacytoth missionmakersart.com Learn more about your ad choices. In Learning to Lead: Undocumented Students Mobilizing Education (Duke University Press, 2024), Jennifer R. Nájera explores the intersections of education and activism among undocumented students at the University of California, Riverside. Taking an expansive view of education, Nájera shows how students' experiences in college—both in and out of the classroom—can affect their activism and advocacy work. Students learn from their families, communities, peers, and student and political organizations. In these different spaces, they learn how to navigate community and college life as undocumented people. Students are able to engage campus organizations where they can cultivate their leadership skills and—importantly—learn that they are not alone. These students embody and mobilize their education through both large and small political actions such as protests, workshops for financial aid applications, and Know Your Rights events. As students create community with each other, they come to understand that their individual experiences of illegality are part of a larger structure of legal violence. This type of education empowers students to make their way to and through college, change their communities, and ultimately assert their humanity. Jennifer R. Nájera is Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Riverside. David-James Gonzales (DJ) is Assistant Professor of History at Brigham Young University. This type of education empowers students to make their way to and through college, change their communities, and ultimately assert their humanity. Jennifer R. His journey into education was inspired by a lack of role models and a desire to inspire others. He transitioned from tutoring to test prep after noticing students' struggles with standardized tests. Stephen's love for math developed through personal support from his mother during his struggles. The SAT Math Guy was born out of the need for digital resources during the pandemic. Creating a faceless YouTube channel allowed Stephen to overcome personal insecurities. Early video production was challenging, but commitment helped him improve over time. Personal growth became a key motivator in Stephen's journey as an educator. AI should be integrated into education to enhance learning experiences. Parents and educators must teach responsible use of AI tools to students. A beach conversation earlier this week caught Cam's attention. And he asks if we've ever had so many known solutions to a common problem and ignored them? ----- At a family event earlier this week I asked eight members of my extended family who liked their work. Six people did not their work. Some hated their jobs. Some were just ready for something new. And some were actively looking for new jobs but only something they'd enjoy and were struggling to find anything that they thought they'd enjoy. One had weeks to go before retiring at age sixty. Rather than go to sixty-five, he decided to get out early. His young-ish retirement added risk to whether his savings would last but he was willing to accept that risk - he couldn't take his work anymore. The youngest participant in the conversation was thirty, so it wasn't workplace veterans vs workplace newbies. It was across the ages. I wondered: Is this typical? Does seventy five percent of the workforce dislike their work? And some so much that they will accept more risk in their retirement to bug out early? These questions led me back to some notes I took while listening to a podcast a while ago. Ezra Klein interviewed the author, whose name I didn't write down, and the author said some fascinating things: First – Our society continues to create conditions that are at odds with human flourishing. And, per this guy, we know this! Yet we continue to do it. So, I thought, are jobs that are being offered and created today at odds with flourishing? What would a job that facilitated human flourishing look like? Is it even possible? Do I know anyone that has one? Second – Few people know what they want. Only that they don't want “this”, whatever this is. The don't want the work they have, only that there must be something better. But what? Most people have no idea. Third – We have a good idea of what a good life should look like and be BUT we seldom pursue it. And, he said, we train our kids to not pursue it. Third – Our desires today DON'T lead to flourishing. They lead to loneliness. Ask yourself - what are your desires? And be honest – will getting them help you flourish or make you lonely? Or lonelier? Finally, the author said there are three things that lead to flourishing: Education, Religion and Art. Not spirituality. Religion. And there are less of all these things today. Less practice of them. Less study of them. Less pursuit of them. Less pushing our kids toward them. And yet, per the author, they are, and always have been, the keys to happiness. What does it mean that we know the solutions to our unhappiness problems and ignore them. What does it mean that those in influencer positions in our workplace could create elements of jobs that would make others be happier? But we instead follow – and participate in and help create and push our kids into - a culture that ignores the answers? Has a society ever had known solutions to known problems and simply ignored them? I'm wresting with this. It tough. How do we get off this wheel? I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to keep it real.

Change. It can be exciting. It can also be tough. And it happens a lot in international schools. At first, new ideas and the buzz around implementing them can feel electrifying. But here's the catch: often, the people involved, the processes, and the long-term sustainability of these ideas—whether they're initiatives or programs—don't quite make it past the starting line. So, why does this happen? And how do we successfully navigate the twists and turns of the change process? Audrey and David have been through countless new initiatives in schools over the years, and we have often wondered what makes some changes "stick" while others fall flat. That curiosity led us to Dr. Jim Reese. Many of you may know Jim, either as the previous facilitator of the Harvard Project Zero Summer Institutes or as a trusted consultant in your own school.Jim lives in Washington, DC. After a long career teaching in international and U.S.  schools, he now works as a consultant with schools, museums, and educational organizations. Jim has a long-term affiliation with Project Zero, a research group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In 2004, along with Dr. David Perkins from Harvard, Jim co-authored an article about managing change in a school to help it last. The article was called "When Change Has Legs: Four key factors help determine whether change efforts will be sustained over time." Each "leg" refers to one aspect of the change; all 4 are required for the change to last. Our guiding question for the episode was, “What are proven ways to bring about sustainable change in international schools?”The Four Legs of Sustainable Change are:Frameworks — Structures that guide and support learningLeaders — People who champion and drive the processCommunity — Collective buy-in and engagement from everyone involvedInstitutionalization — Embedding change so it becomes part of the school's DNAResources cited in the episode: When Change Has LegsHarvard Project ZeroEdtech Co-Op Podcast interview with Jim (2015) Professional Development Collaborative at Washington International School Jim's Contact Information: LinkedInCategories: PD | Leadership | School Change This episode was recorded on April 14th, 2025. From seven students in a living room to educating over 2,400 students across multiple campuses, Dr. Charles Yeboah's journey building International Community School (ICS) is a masterclass in entrepreneurial patience and purpose. When he and his wife returned to Ghana after studying in America, they faced a common challenge: finding suitable education for their daughter. Their solution? Create it themselves; starting right in their living room. What sets this story apart is Dr. Yeboah's counterintuitive approach to success. "Black people in general have the habit of acting successful before they are actually successful," he observes, explaining how he deliberately avoided this trap. His family lived in four different rented homes over ten years while investing over $4 million in developing their school before building their own house. This disciplined reinvestment strategy, coupled with what he calls the "three H's", humility, honesty, and hard work, created the foundation for sustainable growth. The most audacious chapter came when ICS expanded from Kumasi to Accra in 2015, challenging established international schools in Ghana's capital. Dr. Yeboah's strategy of differentiation through campus design, teacher development, and educational quality paid off; the Accra campus now serves more students than the original Kumasi location. With total investments exceeding $30 million from an initial capital of just $20,000-$30,000, ICS demonstrates the power of patient capital and principle-centered leadership.Today, as ICS celebrates its 25th anniversary, Dr. Yeboah is focused on extending his impact through the Education Foundation, committed to improving teacher development in public schools. His philosophy, "I don't want to die rich," reflects a profound understanding that true success comes from giving back to the society that enabled your rise. Want to build something that truly lasts? This prestigious STEM school has been at the center of a battle between the Virginia Department of Education's “anti-racism” directives from the Terry McAuliffe administration and the Asian-American parents that brought suit because their kids were denied admission.  Despite the US Supreme Court passing on their case last year, the Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the allegations. We sit down with Helen Raleigh, a child of Communist China who escaped to the US after coming to America as a college student. Months ago, Heights teacher Joe Lanzilotti took up a prodigious project: reviewing the body of popular literature on boys' education. Partway through his journey, Dr. Lanzilotti catches us up on the diversity of scientific, biological, psychological, and moral perspectives—and how they cohere into a bigger picture of boys and where their developmental needs differ from those of girls. Framing the evidence with papal guidance from the last century gives us a solid starting-point to consider the education of boys according to their nature. The Department for Education has just released the latest figures that show another rise in the number of Education, Health and Care Plans, or EHCPs, in England. These are the legal documents that outline what support a child or young person with special educational needs and disabilities is entitled to. The BBC's education reporter Kate McGough, Jane Harris, vice chair of the Disabled Children's Partnership, and Jacquie Russell from West Sussex County Council join Clare McDonnell. It's the UN's International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. At the moment, sexual violence is not treated as torture, which makes it harder to prosecute. Clare talks to the UN's special rapporteur on torture, Dr Alice Jill Edwards.Kate Burton features in a new version of Somerset Maugham's 1926 drawing-room comedy The Constant Wife in Stratford. Kate is known for many stage roles - at least 14 on Broadway - and screen hits including ABC's Grey's Anatomy and Scandal - as well as for coming from a very famous family. She joins Clare to discuss the new production.Clare also talks to LGBTQ+ trailblazer Yehudis Fletcher, whose memoir Chutzpah! opens with Yehudis, aged six, observing the sabbath with her orthodox Jewish family and all her unanswered questions about the world and her place in it. By age 16, she had been silenced, abused and lost within the care system. By 20, she had been married twice. By 25, she had three children. At 26, she found her voice and stands up in court against her abuser. And at 31, she fell in love for the first time.Presenter: Clare McDonnell Producer: Corinna Jones
