The Book of Hebrews delivers a powerful and clear message about the supremacy of Christ, the sufficiency of His priesthood, and the finality of His sacrifice. Unlike Mormon teachings, which emphasize human effort, ordinances, and a restored priesthood for exaltation, Hebrews declares that salvation comes through Christ alone!--The Unveiling Mormonism podcast pulls back the curtain on Mormon history, culture and doctrine. Hebrews emphasizes the supremacy of Christ, the sufficiency of His sacrifice, and the unchanging nature of God's covenant, all of which contrast with key Mormon doctrines. By examining these biblical truths, we can see how Hebrews systematically refutes the foundation of Mormon beliefs and upholds the exclusivity of Christ's redemptive work. The Supremacy of ChristOne of the key themes in the book of Hebrews is the supremacy of Christ. He's greater than angels, Moses, Melchizedek, and more. Hebrews 1:1-3 (NLT) states:"Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven."While Hebrews elevates Christ, Mormonism lowers him. Mormonism teaches that Jesus is one of many spirit children of God, the elder brother of humanity and even of Lucifer. The Book of Mormon also teaches that men can become gods, undermining Christ's unique supremacy. Additionally, Mormon doctrine asserts that Jesus had to earn His godhood through obedience and progression, similar to how humans supposedly do. Here are some of their scriptures that support these ideas:Abraham 3:22-23 (Pearl of Great Price) – "Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born."Moses 4:1-2 (Pearl of Great Price) – "And I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses, saying: That Satan, whom thou hast commanded in the name of mine Only Begotten, is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying—Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine...

What is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception?Today, I decided to do something a little different. I usually begin by sharing a scripture verse with you. However, today is a very special day, at least in the Catholic Church. There is a lot of confusion about this day and so I wanted to explain what we are actually celebrating today and why we are celebrating it. Today, in the Catholic Church, we celebrate the Immaculate Conception. When I was growing up I never understood how Mary could have immaculately conceived Jesus on the 8th of December and then delivered him on December 25th. It didn't make sense to me and yet I didn't really question it. It was not until I was an adult, I am not sure how many years ago, that I learned what we were truly celebrating. I found this great article that explains what we are celebrating and why. It is called, “8 Things You Need to Know About the Immaculate Conception,” by Jimmy Akin. I will put a link for the article in the show notes. (Click Here) for the article. This is where I found the information for this episode. The Immaculate Conceptions is not referring to Jesus' conception, it is referring to Mary's conception. Mary has a human mother and father, her conception was not the same as Jesus'. However, it was special in another way. Here is how the Catholic Church explains it:CCC490 To become the mother of the Saviour, Mary “was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role.” The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as “full of grace”. In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace.CCC491 Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, “full of grace” through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854:The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin. This means that Mary was not only free from original sin, but she was also free from person sin as well. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains:CCC493 The Fathers of the Eastern tradition call the Mother of God “the All-Holy” (Panagia), and celebrate her as “free from any stain of sin, as though fashioned by the Holy Spirit and formed as a new creature”. By the grace of God Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long. “Let it be done to me according to your word. . .”The next question Akin asks is, “If Mary was free from sin, does that mean she didn't need Jesus to die on a cross for her?"He answers, “No. What we've already quoted states that Mary was immaculately conceived as part of her being “full of grace” and thus "redeemed from the moment of her conception" by "a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race."The Catechism goes on to state:CCC492 The “splendour of an entirely unique holiness” by which Mary is “enriched from the first instant of her conception” comes wholly from Christ: she is “redeemed, in a more exalted fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son”. The Father blessed Mary more than any other created person “in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” and chose her “in Christ before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before him in love”.CCC508 From among the descendants of Eve, God chose the Virgin Mary to be the mother of his Son. “Full of grace”, Mary is “the most excellent fruit of redemption” (SC 103): from the first instant of her conception, she was totally preserved from the stain of original sin and she remained pure from all personal sin throughout her life. The next question Akin asked is, “How does this make Mary a parallel of Eve?” His is answer is: Adam and Eve were both created immaculate--without original sin or its stain. They fell from grace, and through them mankind was bound to sin. Christ and Mary were also conceived immaculate. They remained faithful, and through them mankind was redeemed from sin. Christ is thus the New Adam, and Mary the New Eve.The Catechism notes:CCC494 . . . As St. Irenaeus says, “Being obedient she became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race.” Hence not a few of the early Fathers gladly assert. . .: “The knot of Eve's disobedience was untied by Mary's obedience: what the virgin Eve bound through her disbelief, Mary loosened by her faith.” Comparing her with Eve, they call Mary “the Mother of the living” and frequently claim: “Death through Eve, life through Mary.”Another question Akin asked was, “Was it necessary for God to make Mary immaculate at her conception so that she could be Jesus' mother?”Akin writes, “No. The Church only speaks of the Immaculate Conception as something that was "fitting," something that made Mary a "fit habitation" (i.e., suitable dwelling) for the Son of God, not something that was necessary. Thus in preparing to define the dogma, Pope Pius IX stated:And hence they [the Church Fathers] affirmed that the Blessed Virgin was, through grace, entirely free from every stain of sin, and from all corruption of body, soul and mind; that she was always united with God and joined to him by an eternal covenant; that she was never in darkness but always in light; and that, therefore, she was entirely a fit habitation for Christ, not because of the state of her body, but because of her original grace. . . .For it was certainly not fitting that this vessel of election should be wounded by the common injuries, since she, differing so much from the others, had only nature in common with them, not sin. In fact, it was quite fitting that, as the Only-Begotten has a Father in heaven, whom the Seraphim extol as thrice holy, so he should have a Mother on earth who would never be without the splendor of holiness [Ineffabilis Deus]."Many of you listening may have already known all about this special day. However, I felt it was important to explain as I remember when I first found out what we were celebrating I was confused. I didn't really understand at first and I would have loved to have had this article back then. I know there are some people who don't understand that we aren't celebrating Jesus' immaculate conception and so I wanted to clear up any misunderstandings about this day. For those of you who are Catholic, just in case you don't know, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conceptions is a holy day of obligation. I hope you all enjoyed this little explanation and I hope you check out the article for more information. Dear Heavenly Father, we are so grateful you gave us Mary so she could say yes to having your one and only son. We are so grateful you came up with a plan to save us. We are grateful for all you have done for us over the years. We don't deserve anything and yet you give us so much. We thank you Lord. Rev. Cyril A. Stevens – Sermon 0121A recorded on December 23, 1979 teaching from John 1 – The Glory of the Only Begotten. Pastor Cyril A. Stevens looks at John 1, focusing on the “glory of the only begotten”—Jesus Christ. Pastor Stevens uses the nativity story to highlight the contrast between God’s ways and humanity’s, emphasizing…
Elder Christofferson speaks about how the importance of having a testimony of Jesus and being valiant in it. “What is the testimony of Jesus? It is the witness of the Holy Spirit that He is the divine Son of God, the Messiah and Redeemer. It is John's testimony that Jesus was in the beginning with God, that He is the Creator of heaven and earth, and that ‘in him was the gospel, and the gospel was the life, and the life was the light of men.' It is ‘the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, … that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven.' It is the knowledge that “there is no other name given whereby salvation cometh.” It is the ‘testimony, last of all,' given by the Prophet Joseph Smith, ‘that he lives! … That he is the Only Begotten of the Father—that by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.'” What is your testimony of Jesus? Title: God's Greatest Gift Text: Acts 13:27-41 FCF: We often struggle believing the good news of Christ crucified for sinners. Prop: Because God's greatest gift is a fulfillment of his promises leading to forgiveness and a right standing with Him in Christ, we must believe on Christ alone. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to Acts 13. In a moment we'll begin reading in verse 13 from the Legacy Standard Bible. You follow along in whatever version you prefer. Last week, Paul and Barnabas traveled to Pisidian Antioch. Paul stands to preach in a synagogue on a Sabbath day and his entire sermon points to the faithfulness of God in spite of the faithlessness of Israel. Since their formation, God has walked with Israel providing for them every single step of the way. And now God has given all of them, Jews and Gentiles alike, the message of salvation… The Savior Jesus of Nazareth. But Paul still needs to prove that this Jesus of Nazareth was indeed the Savior – for such a title can really only be applied to God Himself. Thus He must prove that Jesus is God. He must also prove that He was the Suffering servant from the books of prophesy. If He is to be the Messiah He must also be the descendant of David who will reign forever. Paul has a lot to prove. And although this is certainly Luke's Summary of the sermon, there are not many verses in which to do so. So, stand with me out of respect for and to focus on the reading of the Word of God. Invocation: O God, do not keep silence; do not hold Your peace or be still, O God! Your people long to see You and hear Your voice. Visit us with Your Spirit's powerful presence and speak to us with Your Word of truth. In Jesus name we ask this… Amen. Transition: Let's not linger long in the introduction. Since this is part 2 of Paul's sermon, let's jump right back in. I.) God has kept all His promises, the greatest of which is the provision of Jesus His Son, so we must believe on Christ alone. (27-37) a. [Slide 2] 27 - “For those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, recognizing neither Him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning Him. 28 “And though they found no ground for death, they asked Pilate that He be executed. 29 “And when they had finished all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. i. Oh Israel Israel… why do you always do the opposite of what you should? ii. Just like the wilderness… Just like their need for a King… they did not trust the Word of the Lord their God. iii. Instead, they in blindness could not see Jesus for who He was. The Son of David, The Son of Man. The Son of God. No. They read those same prophets who described His coming. They read those same prophets who described his violent rejection and death, and not recognizing Him for who He was, they unwittingly fulfilled those prophesies. iv. But the problem was He was an innocent man. They could charge Him with nothing. So they got the Romans to do their dirty work for them. v. And when every last prophesy about His death was fulfilled, they took the Accursed One down from the tree of shame and buried Him in a tomb, thinking they had won. b. [Slide 3] 30 - “But God raised Him from the dead; i. Once again, IN SPITE OF ISRAEL, God is faithful to them. ii. He raises their Savior from the dead. iii. He rises victorious over sin, death, and hell. iv. Should He stay dead, He could not possibly be the Seed of David – But He arose. v. Therefore, there is no other option than He IS this One whom the Lord has prophesied about. vi. He must be who He claimed to be. He said, “I and the Father are ONE”. That is blasphemy if it isn't true… but if it is true… it is terrifying. Especially if you were the one putting Him to death. vii. But perhaps His resurrection cannot be validated? c. [Slide 4] 31 - and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people. i. NO! NO my friends. ii. He appeared to many people for many days. iii. He went to those who knew Him best. iv. He proved to be alive. v. And now those to whom He appeared are preaching his name everywhere in the Empire. d. [Slide 5] 32 - “And we proclaim to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers, 33 that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' 34 “But that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to corruption, He has spoken in this way: ‘I WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY and FAITHFUL lovingkindnesses OF DAVID.' 35 “Therefore He also says in another Psalm, ‘YOU WILL NOT GIVE YOUR HOLY ONE OVER TO SEE CORRUPTION.' 36 “For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid among his fathers and saw corruption; 37 but He whom God raised did not see corruption. i. Paul keys in on what seems to be a very important tactic of evangelism for Jews in the early church. ii. Jews obviously had great respect for Abraham, Moses, and David. These patriarchs come up often in the sermons and letters of the New Testament. iii. Here we find a similar apologetic as was given in Peter's Pentecost sermon. iv. Paul says that they are also among those witnesses who are now proclaiming to them, in this synagogue, the good news that God has fulfilled His promise to them by raising up Jesus. v. Paul then quotes three separate texts of the Old Testament as proof for this. How has God fulfilled His promise by raising up Jesus? And how is this a message of salvation to them? 1. First, he quotes Psalm 2. a. In this we must define what the word “begotten” means. i. Begotten, although oftentimes referring to the birth or product of having a child, speaks more to the establishment of a relationship than to the actual physical birth. ii. Since having a child begins at conception, such a child would not yet be begotten until they were born. Because that is the moment the relationship is established. b. In this psalm, God is referring to the establishment, or rather, the reestablishment of the relationship between Himself and David as the King. c. Rabbis had long thought of this psalm as conveying a particular Messianic flavor. Meaning it spoke to the coming of another who would fulfill this to a greater degree. d. However, if we think that Jesus' relationship with the Father was established upon his birth, baptism, or resurrection, as some early heretics and even some modern ones assume from this text, you would misunderstand what Paul is saying. e. The sonship of Jesus is eternal. There was… in effect… no beginning to His sonship. So His begetting is also eternal. The Nicene Creed highlights this. Christ's place in the Godhead has always been begotten Son. f. Paul's point is that that Sonship was made evident by the work of Christ on earth, which culminated in the resurrection proving beyond doubt that He is the Son of God. The ONLY Begotten of the Father. Meaning the Only one of His kind in a unique relationship to the Father. 2. Next Paul quotes Isaiah 55 a. In this quote, the word “you” is plural. b. Isaiah is not saying that God will give to Jesus… but to the people of Israel. c. What will He give? d. The holy or holy things and the hesed or lovingkindness which is the old Testament word for grace – the same lovingkindness that God gave to David. e. Paul quotes this to highlight God's promise to the people of Israel. f. He has promised to give them this same Holy One or Holy Things and loving-kindness that He showed to David. g. In this we see that not only is Jesus proven to be the eternally and uniquely begotten Son of God, but also God has promised to give the people the same holy things and grace He gave to David. h. So now for the final piece of the puzzle. 3. Riffing on the image of Holy or holy things, Paul now quotes from Psalm 16 where he says that God's holy One will not see corruption. a. Indeed, death and burial is a guarantee for corruption and decay. b. And as was pointed out in Peter's sermon, David did experience such decay. c. David's death and corruption proved that the promises that had been made to him and every subsequent generation were still awaiting the ONE who would not see decay. d. But Jesus, who was raised from the dead and ascended to the Father's side… did not see such decay. vi. All this proves the unique sonship of Jesus and His fulfillment of these promises of God to the people. vii. In His death and resurrection, He brings the same lovingkindness God gave to David, this same grace, to all His covenant people. viii. Jesus is Son of God, Heir of David, Savior, and God in flesh. e. [Slide 6] Summary of the Point: God continues to faithfully provide for His people. He gives them promises and then raises up people and events to see to it that those promises are fulfilled. In spite of Israel opposing and resisting, their opposition only served to fulfill and bring about the promise of grace. The same grace that was given to David is now offered to all people, Jew, Gentile, and God-fearer, through this One that did not see death. Now God has provided His greatest fulfillment to His promises by providing us with His Son, Jesus the Messiah. Although Paul has not quite gotten to the application yet, we can clearly see where he is going. Jesus is the fulfillment of all these glorious promises in the Old Testament. He is the Messiah. He is the answer. What must they do with Jesus? Believe on Him alone. Transition: [Slide 7(blank)] Being convinced that his proof and defense of Jesus as the Messiah is irrefutable… Paul moves to application. And his application is essentially 1 command with a second command if you should disregard the first one. II.) Through Jesus we have forgiveness of sins and a right standing before God, so we must believe on Christ alone. (38-41) a. [Slide 8] 38 - “Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and that in Him, everyone who believes is justified from all things which you could not be justified from through the Law of Moses. i. This first point, quite simply, is a natural conclusion to the truth that Jesus is the Messiah, the promised One that all of the Old Testament promises to Israel are fulfilled in. ii. That He is the seed that will crush the head of the serpent. iii. He is the prophet greater than Moses iv. He is the greater High Priest better than Aaron and in the line of Melchizedek. v. He is the Eternal King of David's line. vi. He is the Suffering Servant vii. He is the one who will bear our sins and sickness and by whose stripes we will be healed. viii. Because this is the Promised One… This must be true and these things we must believe. ix. First, that through God's Messiah, God has provided a way for sins to be forgiven. 1. Not forgiven in the sense that they are forgotten or ignored… but forgiven in the sense that they have been paid. 2. Paul is preaching to them the reality of Jesus providing a way for sins to be forgiven. Truly forgiven. Not covered. Not needing continual sacrifice. But truly and finally forgiven. 3. A true and effective atonement. A true and effective payment. 4. God's wrath extinguished and sin taken away. 5. Propitiation and Expiation. 6. NOT POTENTIAL… but ACTUAL. 7. Paul does not say that through Him there is forgiveness of sins available… but that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed. It is. 8. My friends we do not believe in a potential atonement for sin in which we need to do something to apply it. Instead, we believe in an actual and effective atonement for sin through Christ. God unites us to Christ through faith. x. And Second, that in God's Messiah every single believing one not only inherits forgiveness of sins but is justified in all things. 1. That means we are treated as if we are perfect in all things. That we are fully righteous in the Lord's eyes. 2. The law of Moses could never do this. Why? The law of Moses assumes people will fail to keep the law. Not only that, but the mechanism to deal with these failures to keep the moral law, is a ceremony or picture of a greater sacrifice. The blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sin. Not truly. 3. The law of Moses could never render anyone pleasing to God. For one would have to keep the whole law perfectly without ever failing once. The law was a schoolmaster designed to teach the Israelites that they were great sinners needing a greater savior. That in order to be acceptable to God they would need someone to make them acceptable. 4. Saying that the law of Moses could make you pleasing to God is like saying that an excellent teacher guarantees a proficient student, it is like saying guardrails and road signs will guarantee that you reach your destination. 5. The law is good, teachers who teach well are good, and guardrails and road signs are good. But so long as some portion of it depends on someone other than the lawmaker, the teacher, or the sign maker… so long as humans have a role, no law, no matter how perfect, could ever render men pleasing to God. Why? Because we are fallen. 6. But now not only has Christ provided a final atonement for sins… but those who trust in Him are also completely righteous. How? 7. He has learned everything the teacher said – because He is the teacher! He has become the driver. One who follows the road signs perfectly. 8. Or to put it in terms the bible uses, He has become our substitute. He is our mediator. He is our advocate. 9. Our standing with God can never be in jeopardy again. 10. Why? 11. Because we are now IN CHRIST. 12. He inherited our sins and paid for them. We inherit His righteousness and are counted only as obedient children. 13. When God sees those who are IN CHRIST, those who are believing… He sees someone who is righteous like His Son. 14. We are not made righteous in the sense that we never sin again, nor are we put in some kind of state of righteousness whereby we must perform good works to stay there… but we are made righteous in the sense that we are legally free from the law. It does not bind us any longer. Why? 15. We have been acquitted of every infraction and granted perfect obedience in Christ for every law. We have, through Christ, fulfilled the requirement of the law, forever. 16. There is a now, a new law written on our hearts. The law of Christ. xi. Right here in this text Paul, even this early, speaks to the double imputation in the work of Christ. We are forgiven and we are declared righteous. xii. Paul's first application is to believe the gospel. To receive the truth which He is speaking to them at this very moment. That In and through Christ they can be forgiven of sin and declared righteous in Him. b. [Slide 9] 40 - “Therefore watch out, so that the thing spoken of in the Prophets may not come upon you: 41 ‘LOOK, YOU SCOFFERS, AND MARVEL, AND PERISH; FOR I AM ACCOMPLISHING A WORK IN YOUR DAYS, A WORK WHICH YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE, THOUGH SOMEONE SHOULD RECOUNT IT TO YOU.'” i. Paul's second application is for those who are tempted to not obey the first. ii. He issues a warning for those who refuse. iii. The prophet Habakkuk warned about a day that God would raise up the Babylonians to come and sweep them away. iv. Paul borrows this text not as a prophesy about the gospel per se, but to warn these Jews that just like the Jews before the Babylonian invasion were warned not to doubt what God could do and scoff at His plan, so Paul is warning of a greater plan and gift that God is giving. v. God is going to do a work that is unbelievable. A work that is too good to be true. A work that is truly good news. vi. And in that day, the warning is that though God demonstrates it clearly and though someone explains it to them plainly, they will not believe it. vii. Paul warns them not to be like the people of Judah and the nations surrounding them as God promised the rise of the Babylonians. viii. Do not be like the people of Jerusalem who put Jesus to death because they did not perceive who He was and unwittingly became the fulfillment of their own prophets. ix. Do not be like the people who did not trust God and wanted a King to be like the other nations. x. Do not be like the people who did not trust God and wandered in the desert for 40 years. xi. Do not walk away in disbelief. xii. Believe that God has sent His Messiah and that in Jesus of Nazareth, God has provided forgiveness and justification through Him. c. [Slide 10] Summary of the Point: Oh my friends! The greatest gift! In the previous point we saw that God has fulfilled His promises to His people by raising up Jesus from the dead. He has proven that HE is the eternal Son, the Messiah, promised to Eve that would crush the head of the serpent and be a second Adam for a new lineage of God's family. And Paul makes it quite plain in his application. Through Jesus there is both forgiveness of sins and a right standing with God to all who believe. The ones who are believing ones. The ones who trust in this Jesus… the ones who receive Him as the fulfillment of the Lord's promises… they are forgiven and they are justified. So, the application is simple. We must believe on Jesus alone for forgiveness of sins and a right standing with God. Conclusion: So, what have we seen today my friends? What should we learn and how then shall we live? Doctrinal Takeaway: [Slide 11] The teaching of this passage of scripture could not be more fundamental to Christianity. God is the faithful keeper of all His promises that He has made to His people since the beginning. He has promised an ultimate solution to the problem of sin and death. Though the law provided a temporary solution to sin, it could not defeat death. Death is only disastrous because all who are spiritually dead, or separated from God, when they experience physical death, remain in that state forever. And while the law could provide some check to sin running rampant. It could not find a solution for man's greatest problem. Separation from the life-giver. Paul, excellently, presents Jesus of Nazareth as the great answer to all of this. He is the one who has been proven to be in a special relationship to God the Father. He is the One to whom the great promises are either made or attached. And by Him, those wonderful promises of a final solution for sin and death… are fulfilled. His death has fully atoned for the sin of His people. His resurrection has de-toothed death for all who believe. His advocacy and mediatorial works continue to bring His people close to the Father. Our Salvation is by Him, and through Him. As those dead in our sins… to be revealed such truths, to understand them and perceive their meaning, we need grace from God to do something dead people cannot do…. Listen. And as those unable to be pleasing to God and atone for our sins we must receive what God has taught us here as a drowning man receives a life preserver. Is there really a choice to be made? My friends if God has given you grace to truly understand your predicament and what Jesus has done to save you from it… there is no choice to be made. Only those who are believing in Him will be accepted by God. It is by faith alone that we are declared righteous. You must believe. But let me expand upon this so that you can know exactly what we are getting at. But as I expand, I want you to notice that there is nothing that we can DO with the message today. Our hands, feet, and mouths can do nothing. All the applications must be for our mind. Our mind must grab hold of these things. Nevertheless, understanding them in our heads does not accomplish their work. For we must be born again. We must be given this faith by our Lord. But let me point out for our heads what we must receive and leave the actuality of your receiving it to God. 1.) [Slide 12] Refutation: “What lies must we cast down” or “What do we naturally believe, or have been taught to believe, that this passage shows is false? ”We must turn from our sin and self righteousness. (Repent) a. Repentance is a change of mind. Repentance is a turning or rejecting of something. b. The gospel call requires all who would receive it to also turn from their own sin and self-righteousness. c. In fact, one cannot believe any of the gospel without also turning from sin and self-righteousness. d. Turning from sin is not saying I'm sorry. e. Turning from sin means that we have forever changed the way we view sin. We do not want it. We do not yearn for it. We desire its death in our lives. f. Turning from self-righteousness means we no longer think we are acceptable to God in our own performance of rituals or moral law keeping. g. For a person to truly be converted the grace of repentance must be an ongoing and continual process. h. Not that we repent every day of our lives in the sense that we sit down and list out every sin that we have ever done… i. But in the sense that we continually reject sin and self-righteousness as our pursuit or our desire. j. We abandon or reject forever the desire for sin or the belief that we can or have earned God's approval by our works. 2.) [Slide 13] Mind Transformation: “What truth must we believe from this text?” or “What might we not naturally believe that we must believe because of what this text has said?” We must believe that Jesus was resurrected the third day, conquering death, and proving that He is the Eternal Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, All God and Man. a. If we have truly believed the gospel of Christ, we must have received and placed all our hope in a number of key teachings that the New Testament makes clear to us. b. The first of these is that Jesus is the second person of the Godhead. That He is equally God as the Father and the Spirit, but in person is wholly distinct from the Father and the Spirit. c. The mystery of the trinity is not easily explained with any illustration known because there is nothing truly that is 1 thing in three persons. d. If you have heard of some illustration to help you understand the trinity, I can guarantee you it is a heresy that has been rejected by the church at some point. e. For instance, water – appearing in 3 forms as gas, liquid, and ice yet all being water. This is the heresy of modalism. That God exists in three modes at a time. f. Or the egg; that shell, white and yolk remain one egg. This is the heresy of partialism. That God is three parts of one whole. g. God exists as 1 God in three persons. God the Father is fully God. God the Son is fully God. God the Spirit is fully God. But God the Father is not the Son or the Spirit. God the Son is not the Spirit. And God is one. h. There is literally nothing on earth like this. So we must receive this teaching by faith. But to aid our faith the Father has given us the Son, who after dying was raised from the dead on the third day and was proven then to be the unique and eternally begotten Son of God. i. We also must confess that Jesus was Fully God and fully man. j. He did not empty out some Godness to pour in a little humanity. Instead, Christ has two natures. God and Man. They are joined together but not mixed. k. Much like man has body and soul. They are not mixed but they are joined. So also Jesus is God and man. And I say is… because He is still all God and All man. l. Jesus took a human nature and added it to His divine nature in order to save us… m. He did not recover from that. n. He is still a Man… acting as our High Priest, King, and prophet. o. In order to be a true Christian and receive true saving faith – you must be found believing all of this. p. The second teaching we must be found believing if we have true faith is this… 3.) [Slide 14] Mind Transformation: “What truth must we believe from this text?” or “What might we not naturally believe that we must believe because of what this text has said?” We must believe that we are saved by grace alone. a. Grace is God's power to do in us something that we could not do on our own. b. The bible describes us as dead in sin. It describes us as lost. It describes us as blind. It describes us as crippled. It describes us as slaves to sin. It describes us as under wrath. c. In all of these analogies, there is but one consistent truth. There is nothing that we can do about any of these conditions. We are helpless. d. God describes what He does similarly in that they are things we cannot control or do. He describes it as wind. As new birth. As regeneration. e. This is a work of the Holy Spirit… and it must… by logical order… precede faith. f. Before we believe anything, God must have already opened up our hearts to believe it. g. When we get to Acts 16 we will actually see this spelled out quite clearly in the life of a woman named Lydia. h. God must save us by grace. And grace alone. i. Without His power to open our eyes, to wake us up, to go and find us… we are hopeless. j. And in order to be a true Christian and receive truth saving faith – you must be found believing this. k. The third teaching we must be found believing if we have true faith is this… 4.) [Slide 15] Mind Transformation: “What truth must we believe from this text?” or “What might we not naturally believe that we must believe because of what this text has said?” We must believe that we are saved through faith alone in Christ alone. a. The bible uses language like receive faith or have faith. b. It tells us that faith is a gift. c. Friends saying, receive faith or have faith is a very odd expression. d. How can you hand someone faith? e. Yet we are told to have it. f. Even here Paul says those who are believing (already believing) are justified. He speaks of faith as something you either have or you don't. g. That is because even our faith is not something we conjure from within us. h. It is a gift of God which He offers of His own free will. i. We believe because He has given us the faith to believe. j. The way God joins us to the work of His Son, the way He puts us under His representation instead of Adam's is by first bringing us to life (for in Adam we are dead) and through faith he unites us to Christ and His work for us. k. We trust Him and what He's done because no works of our own add anything. In fact, they would only take away from His perfect obedience. l. So, those who have received this faith from God – lean in to that. Hard. m. Dressed in His righteousness alone – faultless stand before the throne. n. We have no work to offer… and God requires no work. Only trust. Only belief. Specifically, belief and trust in Christ's perfect obedience and submission to Him. o. And in order to be a true Christian and to have recieved true faith that unites to Christ – you must be found believing this. p. The final teaching we must be found believing if we have true faith is this… 5.) [Slide 16] Mind Transformation: “What truth must we believe from this text?” or “What might we not naturally believe that we must believe because of what this text has said?” We must believe that Jesus was crucified as the penal substitute for our sin. a. Although the atonement of Christ no doubt accomplished a great many things. We must believe at least one thing about the atonement if we have truly received faith that binds us to Christ. b. We must believe that being all God He was able in His death to endure the full and complete wrath of God poured out on Him for every sin we have ever or will ever commit. That God cannot punish us for our sins any more because the punishment has been paid in full. Extinguished. Emptied. c. For those in Christ… there is no more wrath left. d. We also must believe that He was our perfect substitute, being all man so He could obey the law in our place and also die in our place. e. He now, therefore, stands like Adam as our representative but one who has endured. f. He kept the whole law and died to save many who didn't. g. And in order to be a true Christian and receive true saving faith – you must be found believing this. h. If we are found believing this… there is a teaching here which brings all true Christians great comfort. 6.) [Slide 17] Comfort: “What comfort can we find here?” or “What peace does the Lord promise us in light of this passage of scripture?” We must rejoice anew in the gift of our salvation. a. Regardless of whether you are believing this for the first time or if you have believed for decades – LET THIS GREAT GIFT HIT YOU SQUARE BETWEEN THE EYES! b. Rejoice with me c. Hallelujah! d. What a Savior! e. My friends. I said to rejoice with me! f. Hallelujah! g. What a Savior! [Slide 18(blank)] Let me close with a Puritan's prayer. Author of all existence, source of all blessedness, we adore You for making us capable of knowing You, for giving us reason and conscience, for leading us to desire You; We praise You for the revelation of Yourself in the gospel, for Your heart as a dwelling place of pity, for Your thoughts of peace towards us, for Your patience and Your graciousness, for the vastness of Your mercy. You have moved our consciences to know how the guilty can be pardoned, the unholy sanctified, the poor enriched. May we be always among those who not only hear but know You, who walk with and rejoice in You, who take You at Your word and find life there. Keep us always longing for a present salvation in the Holy Spirit's comforts and rejoicings, for spiritual graces and blessings, for help to value our duties as well as our privileges. May we cherish simplicity and godly sincerity of character. Help us to be in reality before You as in appearance we are before men, to be religious before we profess religion, to leave the world before we enter the church, to set our affections on things above, to shun forbidden follies and vanities, to be a dispenser as well as a partaker of grace, to be prepared to bear evil as well as to do good. O God, make us worthy of this calling, that the name of Jesus may be glorified in us and we in Him. For it is in His name we pray this… Amen. Benediction: May the God who wipes out your transgressions, for His sake, And will not remember your sins, Continually set you free from the burdens common to men, That you might praise His name. And that the righteous may gather around the Lord, Who has dealt bountifully with you. Until we meet again… Go in Peace.
Son of God vs. Father. The "Only Begotten" meaning. JESUS in humiliation and glorification.
I begin to move into explaining how Yeshua is the Son of Elohim by looking at the famous John 3:16 passage. It's one that if not careful can become common to the ear in a way that makes us feel we need to “move on” from it. Towards the end of the sermon I deal with some technicalities on the Greek word monogenes.
Road to Calvary Meditation 6: First Monday of Lent The Foolishness of God Adoramus Te, Christe, et benedicimus Tibi - We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You! Quia per Sanctam Crucem Tuam redemisti mundum - because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world! Kyrie eléison - Lord have mercy! ➕➕➕St. Laurence Justinian: “We have seen Eternal Wisdom, the Only Begotten of God, become as it were, a fool through the excessive love He bears for Man.” Yes, my sweetest Redeemer, permit me to say so, this, Your spouse, was indeed right when she called You mad with Love. Does it not indeed seem a folly (foolishness) that You should choose to die for love of me, for so ungrateful a worm as I am, and whose offenses You foresaw, as well as the infidelities of which I should be guilty? But if You, my God, have thus become mad, as it were, for the love of me, how is it that I do not become mad for the love of God? I have seen You, crucified and dead for me - how is it that I can think of any other than You? O Scourges, O Thorns, O Nails, O Cross, O Wounds, O Sufferings, O Death of my Savior! You irresistibly constrained me to love Him Who has so much loved me. O Incarnate Word, and loving God! My soul is enamored with You.
The mystery revealed. JESUS is that Spirit. The Son is the Father revealed.
Rev. Cyril A. Stevens – Sermon 0121A recorded on December 23, 1979 teaching from John 1 – The Glory of the Only Begotten.
Jesus was accused of blasphemy and making Himself equal to God several times, and an important part of this narrative is how He related the title "Son of God" to Himself. Today those who deny the teaching of the Trinity argue that this title means Jesus' ontology (or nature of being) is different than God in some way because of this title, yet we will see that in reality it is exactly the opposite: the title "Son of God" proves Jesus' divinity as God and as the second person of the Trinity. However, the word has a much broader definition which should be kept in mind in reading the next two chapters: to bring into being; produce. (Webster's New World Dictionary) Various forms of “beget” are frequent in the OT both in the literal sense and the metaphorical. * * * When understood prophetically of Christ, the word passes far beyond the adoptionist sense. In the NT, the literal sense is still common but the metaphorical use is greatly extended. For instance, in 1 Corinthians 4:15 an evangelist may be said to have “begotten” his converts to new spiritual life. Christ, by contrast, is the “son” of God, to John, but this verb is not used in the NT to describe God's relationship to Him. “Only Begotten” is a mistranslation in older VSS of “only”, “unique”, probably corresponding to Hebrew of which “beloved” is another NT tr. A sermon by Rev. Mitchell Hay. Epistle Romans 8:26-39 The Spirit, too, comes to help us in our weakness. For we don't know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit expresses our plea with groaning too deep for words. And God, who knows everything in our hearts, knows perfectly well what the Spirit is saying, because her intercessions for God's holy people are made according to the mind of God. We know that God makes everything work together for the good of those who love God and have been called according to God's purpose. They are the ones God chose long ago, predestined to share the image of the Only Begotten, in order that Christ might be the firstborn of many. Those God predestined have likewise been called; those God called have also been justified; and those God justified have, in turn, been glorified. What should be our response? Simply this: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Since God did not spare the Only Begotten but gave Christ up for the sake of us all, we may be certain, after such a gift, that God will freely give us everything. Who will bring a charge against God's chosen ones? Since God is the One who justifies, who has the power to condemn? Only Christ Jesus, who died—or rather, was raised—and sits at the right hand of God, and who now intercedes for us! What will separate us from the love of Christ? Trouble? Calamity? Persecution? Hunger? Nakedness? Danger? Violence? As scripture says, "For your sake we're being killed all day long; we're looked upon as sheep to be slaughtered." Yet in all this we are more than conquerors because of God who has loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, neither heights nor depths—nor anything else in all creation—will be able to separate us from the love of God that comes to us in Christ Jesus, our Savior. Gospel Matthew 13:31-33 Jesus put before them another parable: “The kin-dom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” Jesus told them another parable: “The kin-dom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened."

A sermon by Rev. Barbara Lemmel and Rev. Mitch Hay Hebrew Scripture Genesis 1:1-5 At the beginning of God's creating of the skies and the earth when earth was wild and waste (tohu va bohu), darkness over the face of Ocean, rushing-spirit (ruach) of God (elohim) hovering over the face of the waters-- God said: Let there be Light! And there was light. God saw the light: that it was good. God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light: Day! and the darkness God called: Night! There was setting, there was dawning: one day. Epistle 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 Finally, friends, farewell. Be restored; listen to my appeal; agree with one another; live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Gospel Matthew 28:16-20 The Eleven made their way to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had summoned them. At the sight of the risen Christ they fell down in homage, though some doubted what they were seeing. Jesus came forward and addressed them in these words: “All authority has been given me both in heaven and on earth; go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of Abba God, and of the Only Begotten, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, even unto the end of the age!”
Ephesians 1-3-10- Confession Lord's Day 13-Theme- Our comfort is our union with Christ. Because we are joined with the Son of God, we become sons of God. Because we are purchased by his blood, we are his own.-1- Only Begotten son-2- Our Lord
Pascha 2023 – Christ's Descent Apostle's Creed - I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried, descended to the dead (lit. “to the lower”), rose again from the dead on the third day, Acts 2:22-28, 31-3222 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,“‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.'… 31 he [David] foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Eph. 4:9 - Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 1 Pet. 3:18-19 - 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which He went and proclaimed/preached to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, “Almost without exception in the NT, “spirits” (plural) refers to supernatural beings rather than to people…The word “prison” is not used elsewhere in Scripture as a place of punishment after death for humans beings, while it is used for Satan (Rev. 20:7) and other fallen angels (2 Pet. 2:4; Jude 6). In this case the message Christ proclaimed is almost certainly one of triumph…” 2 Pet. 2:4 – 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into tartarus and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; Jude 6 - 6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, He has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 1 Pet. 4:6 - For this reason, the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. Christ rose from the place of the dead, and raised up the race of Adam from the grave below. Melito (c. 170, E), 8.757. The Lord was made “the First-Begotten of the dead.” Receiving into His bosom the ancient fathers, He has regenerated them into the life of God. Irenaeus (c. 180, E/W), 1.455. For their benefit, “He also descended into the lower parts of the earth,” to behold with His eyes the state of those who were resting from their labors. ...For Christ did not come merely for those who believed on Him in the time of Tiberius Caesar. Nor did the Father exercise His providence only for the men who are presently alive. Rather, He exercised it for all men altogether, who from the beginning...have both feared and loved God. Irenaeus (c. 180, E/W), 1.494. It was for this reason, too, that the Lord descended into the regions beneath the earth, preaching His advent there also. And He [declared] the remission of sins received by those who believe in Him. Irenaeus (c. 180, E/W), 1.499. He gathered from the ends of the earth into His Father's fold the children who were scattered abroad. And He remembered His own dead ones, who had previously fallen asleep. He came down to them so that He might deliver them. Irenaeus (c. 180, E/W), 1.506. For three days He dwelt in the place where the dead were, as the prophet said concerning Him. “And the Lord remembered His dead saints who slept formerly in the land of the dead. And He descended to them to rescue and save them.” The Lord Himself said, “As Jonah remained three days and three nights in the whale's belly, so will the Son of man be in the heart of the earth.” Irenaeus The Lord preached the Gospel to those in Hades. ...Do not [the Scriptures] show that the Lord preached the Gospel to those who perished in the flood, or rather had been chained, as to those kept in ward and guard? And it has been shown also...that the apostles, following the Lord, preached the Gospel to those in Hades. ...If, then, the Lord descended to Hades for no other reason but to preach the Gospel (as He did descend), it was either to preach the Gospel to all, or else to the Hebrews only. If, accordingly, He preached to all, then all who believe will be saved on making their profession there—even though they may be Gentiles. For God's punishments are saving and disciplinary, leading to conversion. He desires the repentance, rather than the death, of a sinner. This is especially so since souls, although darkened by passions, when released from their bodies, are able to perceive more clearly. For they are no longer obstructed by the paltry flesh. ...Did not the same dispensation obtain in Hades? For even there, all the souls, on hearing the proclamation, could either exhibit repentance, or confess that their punishment was just, because they did not believe. And it was not arbitrary that they could obtain either salvation or punishment. For those who had departed before the coming of the Lord had not had the Gospel preached to them. So, they had been given no opportunity to either believe or not believe. Clement of Alexandria (c. 195) He preached the Gospel to those in the flesh so that they would not be condemned unjustly. So how is it conceivable that He did not for the same reason preach the Gospel to those who had departed this life before His coming? Clement of Alexandria (c. 195, E), 2.492.Hades is not supposed by us to be a bare cavity, nor some subterranean sewer of the world. Rather it is a vast deep space in the interior of the earth. ...For we read that Christ in His death spent three days in the heart of the earth. ...He did not ascend into the heights of heaven before descending into the lower parts of the earth. This was so that He might there [in Hades] make the patriarchs and prophets partakers of Himself. Tertullian (c. 210, W), 3.231. [Christ is Lord of] things under the earth, because He was also reckoned among the dead. For He preached the Gospel to the souls of the saints. Through death, He overcame death. Hippolytus (c. 200, W), 5.209. [John the Baptist] also first preached to those in Hades, becoming a forerunner there when he was put to death by Herod. So even there, too, John revealed that the Savior would descend to ransom the souls of the saints from the hand of death. Hippolytus (c. 200, W), 5.213. Christ delivered the first man of earth from the lowest Hades, when he was lost and bound by the chains of death. ...This is He who was to become the preacher of the gospel to the dead. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.170. The jailers of Hades trembled when they saw Him. And the gates of brass and the bolts of iron were broken. For, look! The Only-Begotten, God the Word, had entered Hades with a soul—a soul among souls. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.194. It was the same among the dead. Christ was the only free person there, and His soul was not left in Hades. As a result, then, He is the first and the last. Origen (c. 228, E), 10.315. When Christ became a soul, without the covering of the body, He dwelled among those souls who were also without bodily covering. And He converted those of them who were willing. Origen (c. 248) Meanwhile, Hades was resplendent with light. For the Star had descended to there. Actually, the Lord did not descend into Hades in His body, but in His spirit. In short, He is working everywhere. For while He raised the dead by His body, by His spirit He was liberating souls. ...For the Lord had conquered Hades, had trodden down death. Alexander of Alexandria (c. 324)
It's time to give birth to the Universal Christ. The Only Begotten is ever begetting herself in me now, coined Meister Eckhart. “I HAVE ARRIVED, I AM HOME.'
Title: Why All Man? Text: Hebrews 2:5-18 FCF: We often struggle with Christ's humanity. Prop: Christ must be human to save us, so we must celebrate the Lord's supper knowing this about the Lord. Scripture Intro: Turn in your bible to Hebrews chapter 2. One of these days I will get to preaching through the book of Hebrews. It is an amazing book and I keep coming back to it over and over again. But we must remain laser focused today. The scope of today's sermon is not to provide the same depth and dissection we would normally in a sermon. Instead, we will cover these 14 verses from a very high level as we attempt to answer the question that may plague some during this time of year. Why did Jesus have to be truly human? We hear the expression that Jesus was the God-Man or all God and all man… but why all man? Have you ever stopped to consider that? Why did Jesus need to be truly human? Some might answer that question quickly – “well to understand our situation he had to be man?” To some degree this is true. Christ, in his human nature, grew in wisdom and understanding. But to attempt to apply this to His deity is actually an affront on the omniscience of God. Did He truly have to experience humanity to understand it? I think not. Others may say he experienced humanity in order to give us an example to follow. I do not deny that Christ came to set an example, it is certainly true. But that cannot be the whole of it. And did Jesus really need to be human to do that? Could He not have simply appeared to be a man to guide us into a morally upright life? Indeed, some early church heresies like Docetism (doe- seat- ism) and Marcionism (Mar- see- on- ism) believed exactly this. He was fully God but only appeared to be like a man. The writer of Hebrews will help us to see at least some of the reason that Christ had to be all man if He were to accomplish the mission that the Father gave to Him from before the foundation of the world. I am in Hebrews 2 and I'll start reading in verse 5. I am reading from the NET which you can follow in the pew bible starting on page 1348 or in whatever version you prefer. Transition: Alright so let's dive in very briefly into the text, and see why Christ had to be human. I.) Point 1 (5-8a) a. 5 – For He did not put the world to come, about which we are speaking, under the control of angels. i. In chapter 1, the writer compares Christ to angels. ii. The writer of Hebrews is writing to a Jewish Christian audience who were tempted to abandon their belief in Christ to escape persecution. iii. In Jewish theology, angels were revered. In some communities the arch angel Michael is actually elevated to be superior to the still coming Messiah. iv. The writer of Hebrews addresses this head on by emphasizing that Jesus is the same as God the Father. He does so by quoting Old Testament scriptures which used the covenant name of God “Yahweh” as he is speaking of Jesus. v. He begins chapter 2 by expressing the danger of neglecting such a Christ, since He has provided such a great salvation. vi. So we begin in verse 5 with a further point showing Christ as superior to angels because God did not promise that the future Kingdom would be given to angels to rule. b. 6-8a – instead someone testified somewhere : “What is man that you think of him or the son of man that you care for him? You made him lower than the angels for a little while. You crowned him with glory and honor. You put all things under his control.” For when he put all things under his control, he left nothing outside of his control. i. Here the writer of Hebrews, rather than focusing on David's writing in Psalm 8, he focuses on the content written by the Spirit of God – where the Lord gave us a peek into his creative order. ii. Mankind for a time was made lower than the angels. iii. Yet, God crowned man with honor and glory making Him in God's image. God did not create angels in His image. He created man in His image. iv. And also notice the phrase “the son of man” v. What should we say about such a phrase? It is the title that Jesus most preferred to call himself. vi. This phrase is both a description and a title. vii. The description simply applies the attributes of a man onto the object (the son). To call someone a son of man is to call someone man-like. To call someone a son of thunder is to call someone thunder-like. viii. But the title goes far beyond the description. No doubt when Jesus called himself “The Son of Man” many chose or assumed only the description. But the title has roots in the Old Testament as God hints at a new representative of mankind that will be acceptable to God to the extent that God will share His throne with Him. This is spoken of primarily in the prophesies of Daniel. ix. Reading the New Testament we find the connection readily made by Paul and other apostles, in that Christ was the second Adam. He was our second representative. One that will kneel before the Father having completed the task given to Him by the Ancient of Days and in so doing, He will be accepted and given all authority over all creation. x. This is the title “The Son of Man” to which Jesus referred to Himself, to which David wrote about, and to which the writer of Hebrews is now referring. xi. Though Jesus, as the second representative for mankind – as the last representative for mankind – though He for a time was made lower than the angels – He too was crowned with glory and honor and given all authority. Transition: But it doesn't seem like that is true. Jesus said that His Kingdom is coming and in fact that it is here. And yet – it doesn't seem very “Kingdom of God and His Christ” out there does it? II.) Point 2 (8b-15) a. 8b – At present we do not yet see all things under his control i. The writer of Hebrews concedes our point. ii. But… b. 9-13 – But we see Jesus who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by God's grace he would experience death on behalf of everyone. For it was fitting for him, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For indeed he who makes holy and those being made holy all have the same origin, and so he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.” Again he says, “I will be confident in him” and again “Here am I, with the children God has given me. i. Why is it that we say that death is the door to life for those who are depending on Christ alone? ii. It is because Christ has already suffered our death of punishment. Sure, we may suffer physical death – but a physical death that leads to eternal death has already been paid by Him, for us. iii. Indeed, because His death was commanded by God – by obeying He was given glory and honor because of His sacrificial death. His death was the door to His glory. So now we who are united to Christ are now crowned also with glory and honor after death. iv. This is why to die is gain. v. For Christ – to die was gain. So for us also – to die is gain. vi. And so he is the pioneer. He is the forerunner. What He has done, we who are united to Him, will also do. That, my friends, is a great definition of a representative. vii. Just as in Adam we all inherited a sin nature that doesn't seek God though we did nothing to earn such a dubious characteristic… through Christ we inherit glory and honor through all HE has done and nothing we have done. viii. And this brings us to the reason behind Jesus being human. It isn't just an example. It isn't just to understand us. It is more than that. c. 14-15 - Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, he likewise shared in their humanity so that through death he could destroy the one who holds the power of death, that is the devil and set free those who were held in slavery all their lives by their fear of death. i. The power of death is held by the devil because he successfully caused the first representative to fall. He became then the father of all and secured death as the way to keep his children enslaved. ii. God inverts all of this on its head. He sends His son as a second representative sharing all their humanity. He endures the Devil's temptations remains the son of God and the Son of Man, dies the death of His people and secures their adoption and redemption to be children of God through Christ rather than children of Satan through Adam. iii. Now death is not a door to more death and eternal slavery to the devil's fate but rather a door to life and eternal freedom to Christ's fate in glory. d. 16-18 – For surely his concern is not for angels but he is concerned for Abraham's descendants. Therefore, he had to be made like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. For since He Himself suffered when he was tempted, He is able to help those who are tempted. i. God's concern is not for those who are not being represented by Christ but for those whom Christ was sent to represent. Those of the promise. Those of the covenant. Those of His choosing. Not the angels. But the descendants of Abraham. ii. So he had to be made exactly like them. Not just all human – but A Jew. Of Judah. Of Abraham. iii. Being what He was he is now able to be merciful and faithful a high priest both offering atonement and also teaching all things related to God. Guiding in the worship of God. iv. And helping all His people to endure temptation! Conclusion: And so we have the answer to the question “what is the reason that Christ had to be 100% man?”! In order to be our second representative – our last representative – he had to be like us in every way – yet without sin. He had to die in our place. He had to obey in our place. In doing this – as a pioneer he could carve a path for us to God where no path existed before. And such a path was secured by His death! The path to sharing in His sufferings, His sinlessness, and His future glory is through His death and resurrection of His physical, human, body. But has the church always recognized this? Has the church always seen Christ's humanity as a necessary component of salvation? This is an excerpt from the Athanasian creed, written in the late 200s AD. There are creeds older, but the exact nature of Christ's humanity was not as defined as this one though they certainly believed what is written here. “Now this is the true faith: That we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son, is both God and human, equally. He is God from the essence of the Father, begotten before time; and he is human from the essence of his mother, born in time; completely God, completely human, with a rational soul and human flesh; equal to the Father as regards divinity, less than the Father as regards humanity. Although he is God and human, yet Christ is not two, but one. He is one, however, not by his divinity being turned into flesh, but by God's taking humanity to himself. He is one, certainly not by the blending of his essence, but by the unity of his person. For just as one human is both rational soul and flesh, so too the one Christ is both God and human. He suffered for our salvation; he descended to hell; he arose from the dead; he ascended to heaven; he is seated at the Father's right hand; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. At his coming all people will arise bodily and give an accounting of their own deeds. Those who have done good will enter eternal life, and those who have done evil will enter eternal fire. This is the catholic faith: one cannot be saved without believing it firmly and faithfully.” Notice what is said at the very end. This is the universal church's faith. And if you do not believe it firmly and faithfully you cannot be saved. Christ being All God AND All human was so important they were willing to declare that you could not possibly be united to Christ unless you believed it firmly and faithfully. Later, at the Council of Chalcedon it became necessary to educate biblical teachers on the precise union of the two natures of Christ. Both His deity and His humanity. So, they wrote, not a creed, but a teaching guide for the topic. The following then, is the Chalcedon Definition. “Therefore, following the holy fathers, we all unite in teaching that we should confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. This same one is perfect in deity, and the same one is perfect in humanity; the same one is true God and true man, comprising a rational soul and a body. He is of the same essence (homousios) as the Father according to his deity, and the same one is of the same essence (homousios) with us according to his humanity, like us in all things except sin. He was begotten before the ages from the Father according to his deity, but in the last days for us and our salvation, the same one was born of the Virgin Mary, the bearer of God (Theotokos), according to his humanity. He is one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, and Only Begotten, who is made known in two natures (physeis) united unconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably. The distinction between the natures (physeis) is not at all destroyed because of the union, but rather the property of each nature (physis) is preserved and concurs together into one person (prosopon) and subsistence (hypostasis). He is not separated or divided into two persons (prosopa), but he is one and the same Son, the Only Begotten, God the Logos, the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the way the prophets spoke of him from the beginning, and Jesus Christ himself instructed us, and the Council of the fathers has handed the faith down to us.” Again, the definition concludes that this is the faith that was handed to them from the fathers. The apostles. And from Christ directly. To believe anything else is to be without hope. And even to modern day we can see this teaching emerge, even in our New City Catechism. Question #22 Why must the Redeemer be truly human? That in human nature he might on our behalf perfectly obey the whole law and suffer the punishment for human sin; and also that he might sympathize with our weaknesses. Christ must be all God AND ALL MAN – or we cannot be saved. At this time I'd like to ask the Elders to come and distribute the bread and the cup to each who are here. For we have a correlation to make between this teaching that Christ came and was incarnated as a man. This thing we celebrate at Christmas time – the humiliation of Christ – His taking on human nature – it is far more significant than God giving us a gift. Oh, my friends – it is everything. Let me pray before we make these connections. Knowing then, that Christ being 100% human was absolutely necessary to our salvation, and approaching the table today to commune with Him – to be united with Him all the more – to grow in our faith and dependance on Him… Of what significance is it that Christ said of the bread – “This is my body”? If His death took our death – if His glory is our glory – If He is the pioneer of our faith, carving the path we walk behind Him by faith – what significance is it that He says “This is my body”? The writer of Hebrews later says that it was His body, which the veil to the holy of holies merely represented, was torn in two so that we might enter into the holy presence of God. Again, I ask you what significance is it that He says “This is my body”? It is of eternal significance. As we chew, break, crush, and consume this bread – as our body takes it in and converts it to energy – so also we are energized and enlivened by God the life-giver. We approach Him now, not as guilty sinners – not as wretches – but as sons and daughters. We walk between the broken body of Christ, we walk through the pierced side and enter as covenant partakers. We are His children. We are in Christ. My friends – the body of Christ – being Human like us and having said body – He has made a way for us to follow Him right into the holy presence of God, from which we can receive mercy and find grace for help in a time of need. Eat and remember! Eat and grow in your faith! Eat and be united to Christ and follow Him there to the presence of God. And knowing the reason that Christ must be truly human, what is the significance of his statement when he says that this cup is the cup of the new covenant in His blood? What does the bible say about blood? Blood is where the life is – which is why the Israelites were not allowed to drink it. Blood is the object of repayment and guilt for taking life. Indeed, death can only be undone by blood – for without the shedding of blood, no one can be forgiven. Strictly speaking then – no one is truly forgiven of their sin. Not unless they die. But as was demonstrated imperfectly, as a sign to those who performed sacrifices, and fulfilled now in Christ – a substitute can be acquired to be pardoned. Someone can take our place. And in the book of Hebrews the writer tells us that Christ's blood sprinkles us clean. He tells us that His blood is the signature on a will enacted after the death of the person who signed. A will that installed the new covenant whereby God puts his law in the hearts of His people and changes their hearts. He makes them new and gifts them His Spirit to work out His commands and press them into His mold and follow His Messiah. So when we take the cup and we know that this cup is the new covenant in His blood and that it took the actual shedding of the God-Man's blood to secure not just our forgiveness but our entrance into glory – we partake in communion with His sufferings and His exaltation knowing that one day we will eat this meal again but WITH HIM. So drink and remember! Drink and grow in your faith. Drink and be united to Christ and follow Him sprinkled clean of your sin and washed in His blood. Having supped with Christ in the power of His atonement in which His Humanity and Divinity made a way for us to be free unto Him – and in knowing the eternal significance of Him being truly Human- I can, with more meaning than perhaps I ever have – wish you and all God's true children – A very… Merry… Christmas! Let us pray.
A sermon by Rev. Barb Lemmel and Rev. Mitch Hay. Gospel Lesson Luke 1:26-38 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth to a young woman named Mary; she was engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. Upon arriving, the angel said to Mary, “Rejoice, highly favored one! God is with you! Blessed are you among women!” Mary was deeply troubled by these words and wondered what the angel's greeting meant. The angel went on to say to her, “Don't be afraid, Mary. You have found favor with God. You'll conceive and bear a son, and give him the name Jesus—‘Deliverance.' His dignity will be great, and he will be called the Only Begotten of God. God will give Jesus the judgment seat of David, his ancestor, to rule over the house of Jacob forever, and his reign will never end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have never been with a man?” The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you–hence the child to be born will be called the Holy One of God. Know too that Elizabeth, your kinswoman, has conceived a child in her old age; she who was thought to be barren is now in her sixth month. Nothing is impossible with God.” Mary said, “I am the servant of God. Let it be done to me as you say.” With that, the angel left her. Gospel Lesson Luke 1:46-55 Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior who has looked with favor on me, a lowly servant girl. From this day all generations will call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me: holy the name of the Lord, whose mercy is on the God-fearing from generation to generation. The arm of the Lord is filled with strength, scattering the proudhearted. God cast the mighty from their thrones, lifting up the lowly. God filled the hungry with good things, sending the rich away empty. God has come to the help of Israel, the Lord's servant, remembering mercy, the mercy promised to our ancestors to Sarah and Abraham and their descendants forever.
Rev. Cyril A. Stevens – Sermon 0121A recorded on December 23, 1979 teaching from John 1 – The Glory of the Only Begotten.
We love you and we celebrate and honor your beautiful daughter Mary today. We honor you and your plan for her life. You are so amazing how you plan everything out in advance. You are the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. You are truly remarkable and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I look forward to spending time with you tomorrow. Remember, Jesus loves you and so do I! Have a blessed day!
A Christmas Sermon of John Chrysostom (4th century) Behold a new and wondrous mystery. My ears resound to the Shepherd's song, piping no soft melody, but chanting full forth a heavenly hymn. The Angels sing. The Archangels blend their voice in harmony. The Cherubim hymn their joyful praise. The Seraphim exalt His glory. All join to praise this holy feast, beholding the Godhead here on earth, and man in heaven. He Who is above, now for our redemption dwells here below; and he that was lowly is by divine mercy raised. Bethlehem this day resembles heaven; hearing from the stars the singing of angelic voices; and in place of the sun, enfolds within itself on every side, the Son of justice. Ask not how: for where God wills, the order of nature yields. For He willed, He had the power, He descended, He redeemed; all things yielded in obedience to God. This day He Who is, is Born; and He Who is, becomes what He was not. For when He was God, He became man; yet not departing from the Godhead that is His. Nor yet by any loss of divinity became He man, nor through increase became He God from man; but being the Word He became flesh, His nature, because of impassability, remaining unchanged. And so the kings have come, and they have seen the heavenly King that has come upon the earth, not bringing with Him Angels, nor Archangels, nor Thrones, nor Dominations, nor Powers, nor Principalities, but, treading a new and solitary path, He has come forth from a spotless womb. Since this heavenly birth cannot be described, neither does His coming amongst us in these days permit of too curious scrutiny. Though I know that a Virgin this day gave birth, and I believe that God was begotten before all time, yet the manner of this generation I have learned to venerate in silence and I accept that this is not to be probed too curiously with wordy speech. For with God we look not for the order of nature, but rest our faith in the power of Him who works. What shall I say to you; what shall I tell you? I behold a Mother who has brought forth; I see a Child come to this light by birth. The manner of His conception I cannot comprehend. Nature here rested, while the Will of God labored. O ineffable grace! The Only Begotten, Who is before all ages, Who cannot be touched or be perceived, Who is simple, without body, has now put on my body, that is visible and liable to corruption. For what reason? That coming amongst us he may teach us, and teaching, lead us by the hand to the things that men cannot see. For since men believe that the eyes are more trustworthy than the ears, they doubt of that which they do not see, and so He has deigned to show Himself in bodily presence, that He may remove all doubt. Christ, finding the holy body and soul of the Virgin, builds for Himself a living temple, and as He had willed, formed there a man from the Virgin; and, putting Him on, this day came forth; unashamed of the lowliness of our nature'. For it was to Him no lowering to put on what He Himself had made. Let that handiwork be forever glorified, which became the cloak of its own Creator. For as in the first creation of flesh, man could not be made before the clay had come into His hand, so neither could this corruptible body be glorified, until it had first become the garment of its Maker. What shall I say! And how shall I describe this Birth to you? For this wonder fills me with astonishment. The Ancient of days has become an infant. He who sits upon the sublime and heavenly Throne, now lies in a manger. And He Who cannot be touched, who is simple, without complexity, and incorporeal, now lies subject to the hands of men. He Who has broken the bonds of sinners, is now bound by an infants bands. But He has decreed that ignominy shall become honor, infamy be clothed with glory, and total humiliation the measure of His Goodness. For this He assumed my body, that I may become capable of His Word; taking my flesh, He gives me His spirit; and so He bestowing and I receiving, He prepares for me the treasure of Life. He takes my flesh, to sanctify me; He gives me His Spirit, that He may save me. Come, then, let us observe the Feast. Truly wondrous is the whole chronicle of the Nativity. For this day the ancient slavery is ended, the devil confounded, the demons take to flight, the power of death is broken, paradise is unlocked, the curse is taken away, sin is removed from us, error driven out, truth has been brought back, the speech of kindliness diffused, and spreads on every side, a heavenly way of life has been ‘in planted on the earth, angels communicate with men without fear, and men now hold speech with angels. Why is this? Because God is now on earth, and man in heaven; on every side all things commingle. He became Flesh. He did not become God. He was God. Wherefore He became flesh, so that He Whom heaven did not contain, a manger would this day receive. He was placed in a manger, so that He, by whom all things arc nourished, may receive an infant's food from His Virgin Mother. So, the Father of all ages, as an infant at the breast, nestles in the virginal arms, that the Magi may more easily see Him. Since this day the Magi too have come, and made a beginning of withstanding tyranny; and the heavens give glory, as the Lord is revealed by a star. To Him, then, Who out of confusion has wrought a clear path, to Christ, to the Father, and to the Holy Ghost, we offer all praise, now and for ever. Amen. Monogenes is not natural born. Only begotten is the sole, one kind, or nature. JESUS did not have a dual nature. JESUS had only one nature and that of God.
Jesus’ title as God’s “only begotten Son” is as historic as the New Testament itself, and is common language used in commentaries, sermons, creeds and confessions all through church history. However, in recent years, so-called New Testament Greek experts and bible translators have attempted, in vain, to redefine that as something else. In this broadcast, … Continue reading "How is Jesus the Only Begotten?"

We are now a few weeks into the mystical, strange, poetic, beautiful, mysterious, harrowing, polemical, and prophetic Gospel of John. Since we'll be slowly walking through John's gospel for the next several months, it seems important to address John's mixed legacy in Christian history, as well as the fraught context within which John's gospel was written. Trust me: it's more interesting than it sounds! May we join John's central project of pointing toward the Only Begotten, the Word made Body who tents with humanity, the Lamb of God anointed to take away the sins of the world, the One in whom Grace and Truth kiss.Sermon starts at minute 5:45John 2:1-12Image: detail of St. John the Evangelist, manuscript illumination from the Lindisfarne Gospels, late 7th centuryHymns: God, be the Love, VT43, Words and Music - ©2013 Worldmaking.net Contributor: Richard Bruxvoort ColliganWhere Love is Found, VT 524, Text: Brian Wren, 1978 Faith Looking Forward, 1983 Hope Publishing Co. I shall speak of what the revealed word calls the mystery of godliness. If our vision is blurred where this doctrine and these concepts are concerned, or, if knowingly or unknowingly we have fallen prey to any of the false sectarian notions that abound with reference to them, our progress toward eternal life will be slow indeed. Comprehending the Mystery of Godliness A mystery, so the dictionary says, is “something beyond human comprehension.” Defining the word from a theological standpoint, it says a mystery is “an article of faith beyond human comprehension, as the doctrine of the Trinity.” How apt this illustration is! If there was ever something beyond human comprehension, it is the sectarian doctrine of the Trinity. This doctrine defines God and the Godhead as a three-in-one spirit essence that fills the immensity of space; it teaches that it and they are without body, parts, or passions; it acclaims that it and they are unknown, unknowable, and uncreated, and specifies, in the creeds, that unless we believe all these things we cannot be saved. It is true that finite man cannot comprehend his Infinite Maker in the full sense of the word. We cannot tell how gods began to be or from whence existent matter came. But we are duty-bound to learn all that God has revealed about himself and his everlasting gospel. If we are to gain eternal life we must come to know the Great God and his Only Begotten, whom he sent into the world. And this probationary estate is the appointed time to begin to know God, and to learn his laws, and thereby to start the process of becoming like him. If we do not so begin we shall never receive the promised reward. Because God stands revealed or remains forever unknown, and because the things of God are known only by the power of the Spirit, perhaps we should redefine a mystery. In the gospel sense, a mystery is something beyond carnal comprehension. The saints are in a position to comprehend all mysteries, to understand all doctrine, and eventually to know all things. These high levels of intelligence are reached only through faith and obedience and righteousness. A person who relies on the intellect alone and who does not keep the commandments can never, worlds without end, comprehend the mystery of godliness. There is probably more ignorance and confusion as to the mystery of godliness than there is about any other doctrine. As set forth in the three creeds of Christendom—the Nicene, the Apostles', and the Athanasian, which God himself said were an abomination in his sight—and as defined in the articles of religion of the various denominations, this doctrine is a mass of confusion and a mountain of falsity. Even in the Church, thanks to a lack of knowledge and to intellectuality and the worldly enticement to conform to the general beliefs of an apostate Christendom, there are those who have fallen prey to many false delusions about deity. By way of illustration let us note some of the problems. Who and What Is God? Is there a God? If so, who or what is he? Is he the laws and forces of nature? Or an image of mud or gold? Or is he Baal, the resurrected son of El to whom the Canaanites offered human sacrifices? Is he Allah or Buddha or the confusing and contradictory nothingness described in the creeds of Christendom? Is there such a thing as the Trinity in which the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are three gods, and, yet one god, a god who neither hears, nor speaks, nor appears, as did the one worshipped by the ancients? Is God omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, or are these descriptive designations part of the legends of sectarianism? Are there three gods or one? Why does Jesus say his Father is greater than he, and Paul say Jesus is equal with the Father? Why the great scriptural emphasis on proclaiming that three gods are one, and that the Lord our God is one Lord? However, instead of being politically organized, they are organically united by the HOLY SPIRIT (Ephesians 1:13) having been born again by the WORD of God (1 Peter 1:23) and purchased into freedom by Messiah's BLOOD (Ephesians 1:7). In this teaching you will learn about the POWER of the BLOOD of Christ to HEAL and PROTECT. Use the BLOOD of Christ―declare it daily―for YOU, your FAMILY ... as well as your PROPERTY! ______________________________________ PRESENT ACTIVE ENERGY IN THE BLOOD OF MESSIAH THE POWER OF THE BLOOD OF CHRIST The causal effect―the ability and authority to do exploits―in the BLOOD of Christ is resident and available currently to every believer in Yeshua. Real, born again, Christians are in a single government under Jesus Christ, the Messiah of Israel, just as in a "res publica." However, instead of being politically organized, they are organically united by the Holy Spirit [Ephesians 1:13], having been born again by the Word of God [1 Peter 1:23], and purchased into freedom with Messiah's Blood [Ephesians 1:7]. We have the authority in His name to carry out His mandate and directive, and to publish and teach the Good News in all the world with resultant signs and wonders following. We have available to us as citizens in His Kingdom: His BLOOD, His NAME, His WORD, and His SPIRIT . . . not to mention the help of the holy angels. How could we NOT succeed in every endeavor in which He leads us? The purpose of this writing is to examine: ● The causation of the active energy in the BLOOD of Messiah; ● The authority of the active energy in the BLOOD of Messiah; and, ● The benefits of the active energy in the BLOOD of Messiah. In the Torah, the five books of Moshe, we read where the LORD spoke unto Moshe, saying: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it unto you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes an atonemont for the soul.” (Leviticus 17:11) This is why the priests of Israel sacrificed the blood of animals prescribed by God; to atone for their sins and the sins of the people. It was a picture of the real Lamb of God, Messiah Yeshua (Jesus), who would come one day to make the one-time FINAL SUPREME sacrifice for the sins of the world. When God created man, He created a body from the dust of the ground. That is, from substances and chemicals from Planet Earth. Then, God breathed into the man's body the “breath of life.” That life was held in a chemical substance known as the blood. The life of the flesh is in the blood! If you lose your blood … you lose your life! Blood is NOT life, but it CARRIES life. Life itself is spiritual, but it must have a physical carrier. Blood does NOT control the color of skin or culture, but it carries the LIFE that comes from God. There is NO chemical difference between live blood and dead blood, apaart from blood type, except the LIFE that God put in it! The female ovum has NO blood. The male spermatozoa has NO blood. However, when both come together there is conception: new life. Jesus' birth was no normal conception. It was a supernatural creative act: a virgin birth. Jesus' body was prepared by God's Spirit. Man had nothing to do with Christ's birth. Joseph and Mary never got together sexually before Jesus was born. After Jesus was born, then Joseph and Mary had four sons and also daughters. (Matthew 13:55-56) There is a FALSE teaching which postulates that the Holy Spirit supplied “spiritual” spermatozoa. This is NOT true for two (2) reasons: It would mean that Adam's blood (within Mary as part of the human, or Adamic, race) would have been mixed (included) in Jesus; therefore, it would contain sin and could NOT pay for the sins of the world. (Romans 5:12) It would mean that Jesus would have NO prior existence. Hebrews 10:5-7 shows us: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you have prepared for me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you had no pleasure. Then I said, 'Behold, I have come―in the volume of the book it is written of me―to do your will, O God.” This is the fulfillment of a Messianic prophecy in Psalm 40:6-8, written 1,000 years before Christ as a psalm of King David. God prepared a body for His Son, Yeshua, before Bethlehem. Yeshua was the ONLY BEGOTTEN of the Father. (John 1:14) Jesus' life came from God, the Father, by the Holy Spirit. That's why He said, “I am the life.” (John 14:6) God imparted His own LIFE into the BLOOD of Jesus. Mary's adamic blood (inherited from Adam, the head of the human race) was corrupt. (It contained sin.) Mary declared that Jesus, her son, was “God, my Savior.” (Luke 1:47) Mary was the chosen carrier of the body of her son: Yeshua (Jesus). However, ALL THE BLOOD came from God. Yeshua's (Jesus') BLOOD was NOT contaminated by Adam's sin which brought sin, sickness, and death into the human race through his blood. Adam introduced death into the human family. “Therefore, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and therefore death spread to all men …” (Romans 5:12) Thank God, we have been BOUGHT BACK with the BLOOD of Christ, a different category of blood―priceless―containing God's life, which could pay for our sins! “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was fore-ordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest (revealed) in these last times for you, who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” (1 Peter 1:18-21) It's interesting to note that one of the names of the devil is “Beelzebub.” The original Hebrew name means “Lord of the flies” and was the name of a Philistine god. It was a “dung god.” What a wonderful title for Satan: “Lord of the maggots … the manure god.” Dead blood draws flies. However, the GOOD NEWS is that the BLOOD of Jesus repulses Satan and his demons. Speak the BLOOD of Christ over your home and family. Just as the Children of Israel applied the BLOOD to their doors so that the death angel would pass over (see Exodus Chapter 12), so you can apply the BLOOD of Christ over your family and home by speaking it in faith over them. IMPORTANT Declare the BLOOD of Christ over yourself AND your loved ones daily and over all that God has given you by birth, adoption, or assignment! Hebrews 9:22 tells us: “And according to the (Levitical) law, almost all thigs are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is not remission.” The Greek word for “remission” here used is “aphesis”―from “aphiemi,” meaning “to send away.” It's a release from bondage or imprisonment, a dismissal or sending away, and also forgiveness. It is also used for “cancelling out all judgment, punishment, obligation, or debt.” It is deliverance, liberty, remission, and forgiveness! Many people quote Hebrews 9:22 wrongly and end the verse using the words: “there is no remission of sins.” But … it is MUCH MORE: it is remission of sin, sickness, poverty, oppression, loss, devouring, demon possession. It includes spiritual, mental, physical, material, financial, social, and relational remission … including remission of ancestral and generational curses. The BLOOD of Christ has present active energy. The BLOOD prevails. USE it! Baruch haba b'Shem Adonai. Begotten is an old fashioned and confusing word, but it represents an important truth about Jesus - that He is God's ONLY BEGOTTEN son. What does this mean - does it mean that Jesus is created?

Text: John 17:1-5 Series: "The Prayers of Jesus" Adam Smith is often identified as the “father of modern capitalism.” His major work, titled, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, written in 1776, the same year of our nation’s Declaration of Independence, is required reading in economics classes even today. And yet, Smith was not an economist; he was a philosopher, and most of his writings focused on the natural principles that govern morality and the ways in which we humans come to know those principles and abide by them. One of Smith’s “natural principles” is also one of his most controversial, and that is how every human operates out self-interest. I say it is controversial because of how most of us would like to think that we can rise above self-interest, that we can be selfless and altruistic, but in our natural state we do tend to be driven by what’s best for us, even when we appear to be doing something for others, and to operate from a different place, one that is not in any way motivated by self-interest, requires a transformation of the heart that only God can bring about. That’s a lesson we learn from the prayer of Jesus that’s before us this morning from John’s gospel, the 17th chapter. Our text today is actually a part of a much lengthier prayer that we will be looking at over the next several Sundays, as we draw nearer to Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. This prayer in John 17 is often called “Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer” because of how it marked by Jesus’ intercession for those whom the Father has given him as his disciples. Jesus, much as did the Old Testament high priests on the Day of Atonement, enters into the presence of God to pray for himself, to pray for his family, and finally to pray for the nation. He prays specifically for their protection and their redemption. But what stands out to me in this first part of the prayer is how on the surface it appears that Jesus, at least in part, is praying out of self-interest. “Father,” he prays, “the hour has come. Glorify Your son…. Glorify me in Your presence with the glory I had with You before the world began.” What, pray tell, has caused Jesus suddenly to focus on his own fame and honor? If that’s a question that’s creeped into your mind, then it’s because you’re hearing Jesus’ prayer from a completely human perspective, what Adam Smith would call one tainted by self-interest. John’s gospel invites us to hear Jesus’ prayer from an entirely different perspective, from that of one who “in the beginning was with God, and who was God” (1:1-2), from one who was sent by God so that we might behold God’s glory, “the glory of the Only Begotten, full of grace and truth” (1:14). He invites us to follow Jesus as Jesus performs seven signs that “reveal his glory” (2:11) and help us to “behold the glory of God” (11:40). In other words, glory is a signal theme in the fourth gospel, and it refers to the visible display of divine majesty through acts of supernatural power, which as John tells us in his Gospel is precisely what God sent Jesus to do. God sent Jesus to walk a path that would eventually take him to the cross, where in an act of the most noble sacrifice, the very opposite of human self-interest, people might be drawn to Jesus, the Son of Man and the Son of God, be moved to believe in him as the ultimate, definitive expression of God’s love for the world, and through their faith have eternal life (3:15-16). Such is the theological backdrop of this High Priestly Prayer of Jesus, and without it you simply cannot appreciate the power it evokes to transform your own selfish soul. “Father,” he prays. “The time has come.” Here, Jesus is not talking about the time of day; he’s talking instead about how it is time for him to go to the cross. And while Jesus indeed prays for God to glorify him at this time, now you can understand how his prayer is not just for his own fame or renown. No, he prays, “Glorify Your son, that Your Son may glorify You.” What we hear Jesus praying is for God to honor Jesus’ obedience so that his death does not come to be viewed as just one more crucifixion among countless crucifixions that Rome perpetrated against those they perceived might work to threaten their self-interest. Jesus is instead praying that God would turn that “emblem of shame” into a symbol of salvation, which of course God most definitely did. Jesus is praying that his life, which is soon to be devoted to God in death, might be an acceptable sacrifice so that the honor and the glory that belong to God alone may also be his, and that the world might recognize it and believe in it so that through the laying down of his life they might have life and have it in all its fullness (10:10). Do you view the cross of Christ in that light and are you willing to embrace it by setting your personal aims and agendas to the side so that you might give yourself to whatever is necessary to make much of God and His Son Jesus Christ, and to do so for as long as it takes? Are you willing to forego self-interest for God’s interest so that in the process you might follow in the way of Jesus and honor him also with your obedience? Eugene Peterson was a Presbyterian minister who founded a church in Bel Air, Maryland, just north of Baltimore, and stayed there as pastor for some twenty-nine years. Along the way, Peterson had many opportunities to move to another parish, but he always said that Bel Air was precisely where God wanted him and so until the Holy Spirit said otherwise, Bel Air would be where he would stay. I have been blessed by so many of his books, and I would imagine many of you are familiar with his excellent translation of the Scriptures, titled, simply, The Message. There is an expression Peterson used in one of his books to describe the journey of faith. He called it “a long obedience in the same direction.” I like that phrase; don’t you? Peterson uses it to describe how in the face of a prevailing culture that is in love with the quick fix, Christians should take more seriously the example of Jesus, who understood all too well that from the moment he began his earthly ministry, it would lead him to the cross. Once Jesus set out from the wilderness, having been baptized by John the Baptist, there never was a moment when Jesus didn’t understand that in order to fulfill God’s mission, he must be willing to suffer and die, which is why even before that Friday we call “Good,” Jesus could already say to God, “I have brought You glory on earth by completing the work You gave me to do.” What is the answer to that first question posed in the Westminster Shorter Catechism, that summary of Christian doctrine that dates back to 17th century England? “The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.” It’s not to glorify self. It’s not to advance our own interests. It’s to honor God through our obedience, even as did Jesus, and by so doing to bring glory to Jesus as well as the one whom God sent to bring us to eternal life. How do we do that? Not so much by doing great things. Not many of us will ever be in a position to do great things. But we can do small things in a great way, and the best thing we can do is to glorify God by making much of Jesus. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale was one of the most sought-after speakers of the last century. Shortly before his death, he was speaking at a large church out in California. When the time came in the service for Dr. Peale to be introduced, the pastor began in this way: “I want to introduce you to the most dynamic person you’ll ever meet in your life. He is exciting. He is positive. He is winsome. He can reach down inside of you more deeply than anyone you’ve ever known. He will give you confidence and courage, and a whole lot of other things you’ve always wanted in life but never had.” Dr. Peale was both astounded and embarrassed. This introduction had blown through the valley of politeness and ascended into the realm of veneration. He had received anything near such an introduction, and he wondered how he should respond to it. And as he was thinking about what he might say, he heard the pastor finish in this way: “The person I’m speaking about of course is Jesus Christ; and here to tell you about him is my friend, Norman Vincent Peale.” An introduction is a small thing, but the pastor did it in a great way. So, go and do likewise, and make much of Jesus so that people may know Jesus Christ and the only true God who sent him that by doing so they might have eternal life. Without question, such a glorious introduction is what Jesus, even now, is praying for you to do. John 17:1-5

Here we talk about the sixth day of the creation, and what that means to your call and ministry in Jesus Christ. From the Book of Remembrance:"And Elohim said: Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping things, and beasts of the earth after their kind, and it was so; for they, the gods, organized the earth to bring forth the beasts after their kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything that creepeth upon the earth after its kind; and the gods saw they would obey. And thus Elohim, through the gods, by the power of the Only Begotten given him by Elohim, made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything which creepeth upon the earth after his kind; and Elohim saw that all these things were good. And Elohim said unto the Only Begotten, which was with Elohim, and thus with the gods, from the beginning: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And the gods took counsel among themselves and said: Let us go down and form man in our image, after our likeness. "And the gods went down to organize man in their own image, and in the image of the Only Begotten; and in the image of the gods to form they him, male and female to form they them. And Elohim said: Let them have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. And Elohim required the gods bless them, and to say unto them: Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And the gods said: We will bless them. "And the gods said: We will cause them to be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and to have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And Elohim caused YHVH to say unto man: Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree in the which shall be the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein I grant life, there shall be given every clean herb for meat; and it was so, even as they spake through the voice of their servants, the gods or the Holy Spirit. And Elohim saw everything that had been made, and behold, all things which had been made were very good. "And it came to pass that it was from evening until morning they called night; and it came to pass that it was from morning until evening that they called day; and they numbered the sixth time. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day by the reckoning of the Gods."Music: “Impact Moderato” by Kevin MacLeodClick here to become a patron.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=28994496)

And they, the gods, under the direction of YHVH and Michael ordered, saying: Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place; and it was so. 21 And Elohim said: Let there be dry land, yea and let the earth come up dry; and it was so as they ordered in the name of the Only Begotten. And Elohim called the dry land Earth and the gathering together of the waters called He the Sea. And the gods too pronounced the dry land earth; and the gathering together of the waters, pronounced they, Great Waters; and the gods saw that they were obeyed. And Elohim saw that all things which had been made were good. And Elohim said: Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, the fruit tree yielding fruit, after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed should be in itself upon the earth. And the gods organized the earth to bring forth grass from its own seed, and the herb to bring forth herb from its own seed, yielding seed after his kind; and they caused the earth to bring forth the tree from its own seed, yielding fruit, whose seed could only bring forth the same in itself, after his kind. And it came to pass that they numbered the days; from the evening until the morning they called night; and it came to pass, from the morning until the evening they called day; and it was the third time. Here we talk about the pre-mortal world, the creation, and what that means to your call and ministry in Jesus Christ. From The Creation:"As a teenage boy, one night I sat in my room conversing with the voice of the Lord; I was asking Him questions and He was giving me answers. My vision of the creation came this night when I was in bed, pondering the mysteries of the universe. I had been praying and was filled with the spirit. I was pondering the theory of evolution and the creation story, as told by my religious relatives and as I had learned of it at church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). As a teenager in high school, this seemed very important to me; the Lord had already shown me a few visions that evening and I was fearful of the answer I would receive."From the Book of Remembrance:"In the beginning was the counsel, even a counsel of the gods, and YHVH, the Lord Jesus Christ premortal, was God, and chief or head of the gods; the same was in the beginning with Elohim and is the Only Begotten."Music: “Impact Moderato” by Kevin MacLeodClick here to become a patron.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=28994496)Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=28994496)

And the Lord God said unto Moses: For mine own purpose have I made these things. Here is wisdom and it remaineth in me. 32 And by the word of my power, have I created them, which is mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth. 33 And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten.” Abraham 4:1-4 “And then the Lord said: Let us go down. Nothing defines who we are clearer than John 1:1-14: in the beginning was the WORD, the WORD became flesh, and dwelt among us.Th Word that was in the beginning became the Word that was incarnated in human flesh and blood. Have you ever wondered why?Yes we know what we had believed in the past...that He could be crucified and take our punishment upon Himself. But is it?Here is a clue for you before getting into this week's teaching:The incarnated Word of God is called the ONLY BEGOTTEN of the Father. But what the translators have failed to convey is the fact that it should not have been translated the 'only begotten of the Father', but the 'begotten only of the Father'.There is a huge difference between the two and I am going to address it in this podcast. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us to be the mirror, the ONLY reflection of who we are, to show us our BEGINNING, our source. This is where we can see ourselves clear. The Word became flesh and literally tabernacled among us, having the fullness of Godhead in Him. Man was created to be the House of God. So when He came, He showed that, and became the Tabernacle made without hands. But the unprecedented truth revealed in these verses is that we, our body, our skin is also the Tabernacle of God, made with His hands and not human hands. The Greek word for 'only begotten' is Monogenes. It is mono-genes. A single gene, not two, not three, but ONE. He was the SEED that was going to crush the other seed received by Eve in the Garden.----more----Useful Resources:

We consider the role that all prophets have played in testifying of Christ and we reflect on how there may be always those who listen to the promptings of the Spirit, no matter the state of society. Bruce R McConkie: “From Adam to Moses and from Moses to Christ, God's prophets and priests offered sacrifices. Such were in the similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father who was to come. When Moses lifted the serpent on the pole in ancient Israel and told the Israelites that those who would look would live when they were bitten by poisonous serpents, it was in similitude of the fact that the Son of God would be lifted up on the cross and that all who would look to him might live eternally. Every ordinance of the gospel is designed to point and center the attention of men in Christ . . . Every prophet that there has been in the world has borne record that he is the Son of God, because in its very nature that is the chief calling of a prophet. The testimony of Jesus is synonymous with the spirit of prophecy.”
The Father's declarations are the proofs He presents that the Son is greater than the angels: Thou art my Son. This day have I begotten thee. I will be to him a Father. He shall be to be a Son. No angel in heaven or fallen to earth ever had or has these majestic realities attached to them. In this episode, we examine the wonders of the Incarnation, the nature of the Trinity, and the unique position of the Only Begotten.
Set Your Mind “Mind Set” – Part 2 (Set Your Mind) Text: Colossians 3:2-5 Colossians 3:2-5 (NKJV) 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. 5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Psalm 150:1-6 1Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. 2Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. 3Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. 4Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. 5Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. 6Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD. James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. 2 Chronicles 20:18-22 18And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. 19And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high. 20And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. 22And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. Psalm 103:1-5 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's. If you want to make the enemy look SMALL, then make God look BIG with your praise. PRAISE DOESN'T CHANGE GOD'S POWER, IT CHANGES OUR PERSPECTIVE! (It sets our MINDS on things above) Magnify the Lord in praise! Psalm 34:1-4 1 I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. •YOU CAN SET YOUR MIND THROUGH PRAISE… If you LAUNCH THE WEAPON OF PRAISE TO GOD – you will live in victory! If we take a hard look at the titles of the two main parts of the bible, we will realize that the OLD and the NEW testaments testify of the same thing: They testify that God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, that there was a Creation, a Fall and an Atonement, and that Jesus is the Christ. That's why today, the Book of Mormon bears the subtitle: ANOTHER TESTAMENT OF JESUS CHRIST. Each testament serves a similar, but different purpose. How does the mission of the New Testament differ from its predecessor and its successors? Mainly, it describes in detail of the mortal mission of the Only Begotten of the Father, the carpenter from Nazareth, the one whom we recognize from comparisons with Old Testament scripture and from modern revelation as the God of the Old Testament, the Lord Jehovah himself. Christians, by definition, accept the New Testament on face value. But, how did we get it? Who assembled and edited it? Was it put together under divine direction? And how reliable is it? Those are just some of the discussions you'll hear in the first segment of our podcasts on the New Testament, which really three combined episodes that were first broadcast on KLO AM1430 in 2018 with Martin Tanner leading the discussion. 7. A Sermon of John Chrysostom (4th century) Behold a new and wondrous mystery. My ears resound to the Shepherd’s song, piping no soft melody, but chanting full forth a heavenly hymn. Right Mouse click or tap here to save this as an audio mp3 file Bethlehem this day resembles heaven; hearing from the stars the singing of angelic voices; and in place of the sun, enfolds within itself on every side, the Son of justice. Christ, finding the holy body and soul of the Virgin, builds for Himself a living temple, and as He had willed, formed there a man from the Virgin; and, putting Him on, this day came forth; unashamed of the lowliness of our nature’. He was placed in a manger, so that He, by whom all things arc nourished, may receive an infant’s food from His Virgin Mother. Amen. Jehovah-Jireh In the last lesson, we looked at Jehovah and this name of God in relationship to Israel’s salvation, and how it spoke of God’s fulfillment of salvation in Christ Jesus our Lord. As God appeared to Moses, He declared His name Jehovah to him and God declared that He had appeared to Abraham as God Almighty but by the name of Jehovah was not made known unto him. This I believe, the Lord to have shown me, was speaking that God would come and appear to Abraham and leave. When He came as Jehovah to Moses and the children of Israel He did not leave, but became a God in their midst, leading them out of Egypt as a Cloud by day and Fire by night. After that filling the tabernacle of Moses with Himself, and later the Temple. He became a God to them, and they became a people unto Him. However, by studying the scripture we can clearly see that Abraham called him Jehovah. Here in this less we begin to dig a little deeper in the name of Jehovah as declared by Abraham, which was specifically tied to God’s provision, Jehovah-Jireh. Genesis 22:9 -14 “And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of Jehovah called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him; for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of Jehovah it shall be provided.” Here we come to Mount Moriah, which means seen of Jah, Jah is the short form of Jehovah. This was God’s seeing. God spoke to Abraham to bring Isaac to Mount Moriah and offer Him. Later this became the Temple Mount, and was speaking of the Mount where God would lay the sacrifice, and the chief cornerstone. “Behold I lay in Zion a stone a tried stone.” It is no coincidence that the House of God is founded upon a sacrifice. All this was speaking of Christ Jesus our Lord. He is God’s true provision. In Mount Moriah a sacrifice provided of God was revealed, a Ram caught in a thicket. Here the great provision for all mankind begins to be unfolded, “Jehovah shall provide Himself a sacrifice.” “God so loved the world that He gave His Son.” This is the provision seen of Jah. This is God’s provision. This provision not only saves me from my sin but delivers me completely out of the man of sin and takes me into my promised land, the land of rest in Christ Jesus. We are a new creation created of God in Christ Jesus. Here with Abraham the thought of the Only Son comes into view. “Take thine son, thine only son.” Abraham also had Ishmael who had been cast out. Ishmael was speaking of the man of the flesh, or the Adamic man. Jesus himself is also called the Only Begotten. In Jesus we begin to see the fulfillment of what God is saying through Abraham and Isaac. The Only Begotten is God’s seed, kind, and man. The Old Man is Gone. Our salvation is not in Adam, but in the Only Begotten of God. This is a New Man coming out of God. We in, through, and by Him, come out of God. Our origin is no more in Adam. The Old Man is dead, buried and gone. The New Man has NOW become my life. This is my promised land – “that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” In us is a land flowing with milk and honey. Out of our inner being flows the River of Life Himself. Glory to God!!!
John 20:19-31Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church from the Gospel of John:19 In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Temple authorities. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 20 Having said this, the savior showed them the marks of crucifixion. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw Jesus, 21 who said to them again, “Peace be with you. As Abba God sent me, so I’m sending you.” 22 After saying this, Jesus breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you retain anyone’s sins, they are retained.” 24 It happened that one of the Twelve, Thomas—nicknamed Didymus, or “Twin”—was absent when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples kept telling him, “We’ve seen Jesus!” Thomas’ answer was, “I’ll never believe it without putting my finger in the nail marks and my hand into the spear wound.” 26 On the eighth day, the disciples were once more in the room, and this time Thomas was with them. Despite the locked doors, Jesus came and stood before them, saying, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then, to Thomas, Jesus said, “Take your finger and examine my hands. Put your hand into my side. Don’t persist in your unbelief, but believe!” 28 Thomas said in response, “My Savior and my God!” 29 Jesus then said, “You’ve become a believer because you saw me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus performed many other signs as well—signs not recorded here—in the presence of the disciples. 31 But these have been recorded to help you believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Only Begotten, so that by believing you may have life in Jesus’ Name. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God
Jesus Christ is also called the only begotten Son of God, and our Lord. Listen to this week's episode to find out why.
Fundamental to sharing the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ is a solid knowledge of the Doctrine of The Godhead; namely the true nature of God, The Son, The Holy Spirit, and their relationship to humankind. In part 1 of our Basic Doctrines series, we interview Robert Millet, who was a professor of many religion courses at the University level include at BYU. We discuss the true, revealed and enduring teachings about The Godhead. Each episode in this Basic Doctrines series will come with source material to official teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the various doctrines, as well as resources to support it as a "doctrine" of the church. For an introduction on what is meant by a Doctrine or what is a Policy or Practice of the church, please listen to our introductory episode with Mike Goodman by clicking here. Here is the official teaching on The Godhead from the Church's official website: There are three separate personages in the Godhead: God, the Eternal Father; His Son, Jesus Christ; and the Holy Ghost (see Joseph Smith—History 1:15–20). The Father and the Son have tangible bodies of flesh and bone, and the Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit (see D&C 130:22–23). They are one in purpose and doctrine. They are perfectly united in bringing to pass Heavenly Father’s divine plan of salvation. The Godhead - God the Father God the Father is the Supreme Ruler of the universe. He is the Father of our spirits (see Hebrews 12:9). He is perfect, has all power, and knows all things. He is also a God of perfect mercy, kindness, and charity. The Godhead - Jesus Christ Jesus Christ is the Firstborn of the Father in the spirit and is the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. He is Jehovah of the Old Testament and the Messiah of the New Testament. Jesus Christ lived a sinless life and made a perfect Atonement for the sins of all mankind (see Alma 7:11–13). His life is the perfect example of how all mankind should live (see John 14:6; 3 Nephi 12:48). He was the first person on this earth to be resurrected (see 1 Corinthians 15:20–22). He will come again in power and glory and will reign on the earth during the Millennium. All prayers, blessings, and priesthood ordinances should be done in the name of Jesus Christ (see 3 Nephi 18:15, 20–21). Related references: Helaman 5:12; D&C 19:23; D&C 76:22–24 The Godhead - The Holy Ghost The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead. He is a personage of spirit without a body of flesh and bones. He is often referred to as the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, and the Comforter. The Holy Ghost bears witness of the Father and the Son, reveals the truth of all things, and sanctifies those who repent and are baptized (see Moroni 10:4–5). THE ONLY BEGOTTEN, page 90 chapter 9 of Mysteries of Creation by Ogden Kraut. In a literal sense begotten refers to procreation and being the father or sire. However, the word has a much broader definition which should be kept in mind in reading the next two chapters: to bring into being; produce. (Webster’s New World Dictionary) Various forms of “beget” are frequent in the OT both in the literal sense and the metaphorical. Christ, by contrast, is the “son” of God, to John, but this verb is not used in the NT to describe God’s relationship to Him. “Only Begotten” is a mistranslation in older VSS of “only”, “unique”, probably corresponding to Hebrew of which “beloved” is another NT tr. He takes my flesh, to sanctify me; He gives me His Spirit that He may save me.Come, then, let us observe the Feast. Truly wondrous is the whole chronicle of the Nativity. For this day the ancient slavery is ended, the devil confounded, the demons take to flight, the power of death is broken, paradise is unlocked, the curse is taken away, sin is removed from us, error driven out, truth has been brought back, the speech of kindliness diffused, and spreads on every side, a heavenly way of life has been ¡in planted on the earth, angels communicate with men without fear, and men now hold speech with angels. Why is this? Because God is now on earth, and man in heaven; on every side all things commingle. He became Flesh. He did not become God. He was God. Wherefore He became flesh, so that He Whom heaven did not contain, a manger would this day receive. He was placed in a manger, so that He, by whom all things are nourished, may receive an infants food from His Virgin Mother. So, the Father of all ages, as an infant at the breast, nestles in the virginal arms, that the Magi may more easily see Him. Since this day the Magi too have come, and made a beginning of withstanding tyranny; and the heavens give glory, as the Lord is revealed by a star.To Him, then, Who out of confusion has wrought a clear path, to Christ, to the Father, and to the Holy Spirit, we offer all praise, now and forever.Amen.
We take a look at Jesus and how he is the Only Begotten son of God. What does that imply?
Explore the concept of a co-Creator: Lady Wisdom and Jesus. We read in Colossians 1:13-17, " He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together." Consider Proverbs 8:1-2, 22-26, 30. Explore that Wisdom is being cast as a co-Creator or Agent of creation. Jesus is referred to in the New Testament as the Wisdom of God. If this passage is linked to Jesus, was Jesus Creator? Wisdom was the agent, but who or what was Wisdom? Consider the Wisdom of Solomon 6:22, 7:22, 25-26, Wisdom of Solomon 9:1-4, 9-10 and Sirach 24:1-6. The New Testament references not only the Old Testament but Second Temple Jewish material because that is part of their context. The Jews had a wisdom tradition that was included in the second power discussion. Consider Luke 11:46-50. Compare that to Matthew 23:29-35. The Synoptics link Jesus to the Wisdom figure. Explore wisdom and Hebrews. Recall Wisdom of Solomon 7:26 and Hebrews 1:1-3. Why the feminine language for Wisdom? The issue is not biological gender but grammatical gender. Grammatical gender is arbitrary. Consider the example of Genesis 4. Does it make any sense for God to either acquire wisdom or create wisdom? If God acquires wisdom it implies there was a time when wisdom was not and God lacked wisdom. For Athanasius, the question was then how could we have God? "Bringing forth" implies wisdom was around before but wasn't on the scene center stage. Explore the term "begotten" versus made or created. Consider what the Nicene Creed (325 AD) states. Consider Jesus as "Only Begotten". The Greek is monogenēs and until late 19th or early 20th century was assumed by many to mean monos ("only") and gennaw ("to beget"). Later discoveries (Papyri) showed monos ("only") and genē ("kind") (Cf. Hebrews 11:17).
We will be reading Mysteries of Creation, and talking about the Office of The Only Begotten of The Father.

Summary of today's show: The climactic moment of not just Holy Week but of the whole liturgical year comes at the Easter Vigil, a liturgy filled with all the richest signs, symbols, and mysteries of the Christian faith. Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams talk with Fr. Paul Soper about the four distinct parts of the Vigil Mass: the Liturgy of Light, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of Baptism, and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. If you've never been to the Easter vigil, you owe it to yourself to experience the fullness of the liturgical life of the Catholic faith. Listen to the show: Watch the show via live video streaming or a recording later: Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams Today's guest(s): Fr. Paul Soper Today's topics: Exploring the Mysteries of the Easter Vigil 1st segment: Scot Landry welcomed everyone to the show and noted that today marks the last day of Lent. Fr. Matt said he thinks of it as Spy Wednesday because the readings focus on Judas' betrayal. Scot said today's show will focus on Easter Vigil which he considers the high point of the Church year. This Mass is truly special and we will discuss it with the hope that people who haven't been or haven't been in a long time will attend. Fr. Matt said this Mass is our Super Bowl. If you ever wanted to know what it means to be fully Catholic, this liturgy is the one. Scot and Fr. Matt welcomed Fr. Paul Soper to the show. Scot asked him what he loves about the Easter vigil. He said he loves the richness of the symbolism, like a giant bonfire or lots of flowing water for baptisms, the Easter candle, the Exsultet. The readings of Easter night are the best of the whole year. The Easter Vigil has four liturgies. Fr. Paul said it begins with the Liturgy of Light, lighting the fire, blessing the flame, lighting the candles. The liturgy of the Word is seven readings and psalms, the Gloria, a New Testament reading, the Gospel and the homily. Then the Liturgy of Baptism, whether for new people entering the Church or people renewing their baptismal vows. Finally, the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Scot said his kids always sit in the back pew for the Liturgy of Light to get the candles lit first and pass it on to others. Fr. Paul said he loves the big bonfire to represent the love of God bursting into the world, like the stone covering the entrance to Christ's tomb being blasted off at the Resurrection. Our spreading of the Gospel bursts into a world enshrouded in darkness. Scot talked of the new Paschal Candle that is blessed at the Easter Vigil and how at every funeral over the next year, the casket will be placed next to it. Fr. Paul said death is the fulfillment of the promises of baptism and so all the symbols of baptism are present, like the candle, baptismal water, the white shroud. At the end of the procession with the Paschal Candle, the Deacon or priest chants the Exsultet. Fr. Matt said he's chanted the Exsultet once as a deacon and then once as a parochial vicar. He talked about practicing it over and over again before his first time so he could sing and pray it from his heart. Scot said the Exsultet is something to think and pray about during the Triduum. Fr. Paul said it is a prayer calling all of heaven and earth to exult in the beautiful events of this night and then focuses on the Easter Candle itself. They then played the Exsultet as sung by Fr. Jonathan Gaspar, Director of the Office of Worship. Exult, let them exult, the hosts of heaven, exult, let Angel ministers of God exult, let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty King's triumph! Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her, ablaze with light from her eternal King, let all comers of the earth be glad, knowing an end to gloom and darkness. Rejoice, let Mother Church also rejoice, arrayed with the lightning of his glory, let this holy building shake with joy, filled with the mighty voices of the peoples (Therefore, dearest friends, standing in the awesome glory of this holy light, invoke with me, I ask you, the mercy of God almighty, that he, who has been pleased to number me, though unworthy, among the Levites, may pour into me his light unshadowed, that I may sing this candle's perfect praises). (V. The Lord be with you. R. And with your spirit.) V. Lift up your hearts. R. We lift them up to the Lord. V. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. R. It is right and just. It is truly right and just, with ardent love of mind and heart and with devoted service of our voice, to acclaim our God invisible, the almighty Father, and Jesus Christ, our Lord, his Son, his Only Begotten. Who for our sake paid Adam's debt to the eternal Father, and, pouring out his own dear Blood, wiped clean the record of our ancient sinfulness. These, then, are the feasts of Passover, in which is slain the Lamb, the one true Lamb, whose Blood anoints the doorposts of believers. This is the night, when once you led our forebears, Israel's children, from slavery in Egypt and made them pass dry-shod through the Red Sea. This is the night that with a pillar of fire banished the darkness of sin. This is the night that even now, throughout the world, sets Christian believers apart from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin, leading them to grace and joining them to his holy ones. This is the night, when Christ broke the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld. Our birth would have been no gain, had we not been redeemed. O wonder of your humble care for us! O love, O charity beyond all telling, to ransom a slave you gave away your Son! O truly necessary sin of Adam, destroyed completely by the Death of Christ! O happy fault that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer! Scot interrupted this first part. He said the last two couplets are his favorite part. Fr. Paul said it's a starkly honest theology in the midst of this beautiful poetry. We've done deadly things and are living under a sentence of condemnation and so what we need is someone to die for us. We're not afraid to put our history and metaphysics in the same package. Scot added that he loves the repetition of “this is the night”, which reminds us that this was one night that changed the world. This isn't a myth or fable. It's a real night from 2,000 years ago. Fr. Matt recalls attending an Easter vigil as an altar server, yet not understanding the Easter joy. It wasn't until his early 20s that the experience of this holy night was radically changed forever for him. As we come to the point of the darkness of Good Friday and emptiness of Holy Saturday, the light burst forth in the Vigil and changes everything. He said the holy building shakes with joy because it is filled with mighty voices of the people. Fr. Paul said one doesn't become that by possessing an idea. The early Church were witnesses to an event that changed the world. Fr. Paul said he has a particular fondness for the description of the Easter candle as the work of bees. All of creation has worked together to strive so that God can be glorified. But if I don't go, then their work is somehow in vain. If I go, it fulfills not just me, but them and what they were created to be. O truly blessed night, worthy alone to know the time and hour when Christ rose from the underworld! This is the night of which it is written: The night shall be as bright as day, dazzling is the night for me, and full of gladness. The sanctifying power of this night dispels wickedness, washes faults away, restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners, drives out hatred, fosters concord, and brings down the mighty. On this, your night of grace, O holy Father, accept this candle, a solemn offering, the work of bees and of your servants' hands, an evening sacrifice of praise, this gift from your most holy Church. But now we know the praises of this pillar, which glowing fire ignites for God's honor, a fire into many flames divided, yet never dimmed by sharing of its light, for it is fed by melting wax, drawn out by mother bees to build a torch so precious. O truly blessed night, when things of heaven are wed to those of earth, and divine to the human. Therefore, O Lord, we pray you that this candle, hallowed to the honor of your name, may persevere undimmed, to overcome the darkness of this night. Receive it as a pleasing fragrance, and let it mingle with the lights of heaven. May this flame be found still burning by the Morning Star: the one Morning Star who never sets, Christ your Son, who, coming back from death's domain, has shed his peaceful light on humanity, and lives and reigns for ever and ever. R. Amen. Fr. Matt said his favorite part was that our birth would have been no gain if we weren't redeemed. Jesus was born to die so we could have eternal life. And then: O wonder of your humble care for us! O love, O charity beyond all telling, to ransom a slave you gave away your Son! For a biological dad to give away your son in order that everyone could have life would speak to a profound love. That is the love of Jesus Christ and the image of the unseen God. Scot said after the Exsultet is seven Old Testament readings, although parishes can have 3 if they choose. Scot said these 7 readings are the essential readings of Salvation History. Fr. Paul said the readings are from Genesis, Exodus, Baruch, Ezekiel, Isaiah. We start by hearing that God created the world and it was good, which is not always obvious to people. The created world is not evil. The next is the sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham showing his faithfulness to God. God stops the sacrifice and will give His own Son for the sacrifice. The third reading is the passage through the Red Sea, which is filled with drama. This evokes the sacrament of baptism. When you go under water it's like you died and are entombed and then you come up it's like being alive again. The passage of Israel through the Red Sea is a rebirth. It's directly connected to the cross. He noted that the Easter vigil is the normative time for baptism. Now we have two passages from Isaiah which have promises made to the people of Israel in exile. There is no temple, no sacrifice, no priesthood anymore. Isaiah tells the people that God hasn't forgotten them. Then the second Isaiah passage asks why people are running after things that can't satisfy. The reading from Baruch speaks of the fountain of wisdom and then Ezekiel speaks of a new heart and a new spirit. Scot said at this point we hear the Gloria, which is after the Old Testament readings, but before the New Testament readings. This is unlike other Masses. Fr. Paul said this liturgy reminds us that this moment of the Resurrection is the pivot point of all human history. This is the moment when the church's lights come on, the flowers are brought out, trumpets are played. The liturgy is the foretaste and promise of heaven. Before it was dark and we were listening in hope and now it is after and we are experiencing the glory. The Epistle to the Romans talks of baptism and the Gospel talks of the discovery of the empty tomb. This is followed by the baptismal liturgy. Fr. Paul said the first experience of the Christian community of the Resurrection was the empty tomb. The Resurrection was not just a spiritual phenomenon, but it was much more. Jesus was dead and now He's alive. It's clear that the burial clothes were thrown aside, unlike Lazarus who had been wrapped in burial clothes. Lazarus will die again, but Jesus will never die again. Death has been vanquished. Sin and death are the same reality and the vanquishing of one is the vanquishing of the other. The final power of sin over us has been broken. Scot said as a cradle Catholic, he didn't choose baptism, first communion, or confirmation, so he loves to see adults who have themselves come to understand the truths of the Catholic faith and choosing to become Catholic. It makes him ask if how he's choosing to live his own faith. Scot said we renew many of the baptismal promises and things of our profession of faith which is especially significant this year during this Year of Faith. Following all this, we have the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Fr. Paul said the Eucharist derives its meaning from the Easter mysteries. St. John shows this in the scene when the soldier pierces Christ's side and blood and water is poured out for us. Fr. Matt thought about this as the coming together as the family of God, fed at the table of the Lord, and sent forth to bring that our other brothers and sister so they can take part next year.
Summary of today's show: Everyone has a favorite hymn from church and a reason why it moves them, whether from a cherished childhood memory or how it moves the spirit to contemplate God, and so on today's show Scot Landry, Fr. Chris O'Connor, and Rick Heil share with listeners their lists of their top three favorite hymns and count them down like Kasey Kasem. Listen to the show: Watch the show via live video streaming or a recording later: Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor Today's topics: Our Favorite Church Hymns 1st segment: Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor greeted all listeners. Scot noted that Fr. Chris has just been inducted into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. They discussed that the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre have the right to ride a horse into any church in the world, although they don't know where it came from. Fr. Chris said it started in the Crusades to protect the tomb of Christ and they continue that work today, providing funding and assistance to protect the religious site there, but also to bring Muslims and Christians together in the Holy Land for peace. Fr. Chris said about 70 men and women from around New England were inducted into the order in a special ceremony. Fr. Chris also said that they had the seminary Thanksgiving dinner this week before the seminarians return home to their families. They reflect on God's goodness and the many ways he blesses their vocations. Scot noted that tomorrow will see the broadcast of interviews with Cheverus Award winners from this past Sunday. He also noted that Cardinal Seán published his second pastoral letter of 2011 one year ago today on the Sunday Mass participation. Today, Scot said they're counting down their favorite church hymns. He said the idea came from a discussion with his 10-year-old son this past weekend about how he's preparing for Advent at the Archdiocesan Boys Choir School. Scot encouraged listeners to make their own list of their favorite hymns and email them to us at Live@thegoodcatholiclife.com or post them in the comments on our website or on our Facebook page. Scot's favorite church hymn of all time begins. Rick played a clip: . He first heard this at the Pontifical North American College and later it was the recessional at his wedding. Fr. Chris said that Msgr. James Moroney, the rector of St. John Seminary, said this is his favorite hymn as well. Fr .Chris said one of the Eucharistic Prefaces reminds us that God doesn't need anything so all we can offer Him is our praise. O God beyond all praising, we worship you today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay; for we can only wonder at every gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end: we lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word, we honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord. Then hear, O gracious Savior, accept the love we bring, that we who know your favor may serve you as our king; and whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, we'II triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still: to marvel at your beauty and glory in your ways, and make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise. Fr. Chris said it reminds us to open ourselves to the Lord in both our Easter Sundays and Good Fridays. Now to one of his favorites: . “Lord, have mercy. God our Father in heaven, God the Son, our redeemer, God the Holy Spirit, Holy Trinity, One God Holy Mary Mother of God, Saint Joseph, Spouse of Mary, Saints Peter, Paul and Holy apostles, Saint Isaac Jogues and Holy Martyrs, Saint Patrick, Bishops and Priests, Saints Dominic and Catherine, Saints Francis and Claire, Saint Theresa of Jesus, Saint Peter Claver, Saint Juan Diego, Saint Rose of Lima, Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys, Saint Thérèse of Lesieux, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, Saint John Neumann, Saint Teresa Benedicta, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, Blessed Edmund Rice, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, Lord, show us your kindness Draw young people to serve you, in priesthood, and religious life. Inspire the people of our world with respect for human life that there may be an end to the culture of death. Guide and protect the dioceses of Baltimore, Boston, Louisville, New York, Philadelphia and all your Church. Keep our Holy Father, our Bishops and all clergy, in faithful service to your Church.” Fr. Chris said it reminds us that the Church is not just the Church we see and touch, but also the spiritual reality of the holy and blessed ones who intercede for us. Scot said when this is prayed during ordination, the men are prostrate before the altar as the people pray for them. Fr. Chris noted that most of the saints in this specific litany are saints from the Americas. He said the litany often changes the names of the saints prayed for to include, perhaps the patron saints of the men preparing for ordination or the patron saints of a religious order of the like. Scot said the various litanies have basically the same lyrics. Fr. Chris said he picked this one for the peaceful music. Rick makes his first choice: . This version was chanted by Fr. Jonathan Gaspar of the Office of Divine Worship for the Archdiocese. Rick said he chose it because Fr. Jonathan sang it on the show a couple of years ago and it stuck with him for 3 months afterward. Scot said when music moves you, it's usually a five sense experience. The first time he heard it at the Easter vigil, seeing the church in darkness except candlelight, smelling the incense and lilies. Taking it all in, the sense of darkness and joy that Christ has conquered death. Rejoice, let Mother Church also rejoice, arrayed with the lightning of his glory, let this holy building shake with joy, filled with the mighty voices of the peoples. (Therefore, dearest friends, standing in the awesome glory of this holy light, invoke with me, I ask you, the mercy of God almighty, that he, who has been pleased to number me, though unworthy, among the Levites, may pour into me his light unshadowed, that I may sing this candle's perfect praises). This is the first section of the Exsultet They then discussed the difference between hymns and other music. Fr. Chris said hymns are usually music that everyone sings and this is music sung only by the deacon or priest or cantor and it's a very difficult piece of music. The next song from Scot is . Let all mortal flesh keep silence, And with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly minded, For with blessing in His hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, Our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, As of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, In the body and the blood; He will give to all the faithful His own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven Spreads its vanguard on the way, As the Light of light descendeth From the realms of endless day, That the powers of hell may vanish As the darkness clears away. At His feet the six wingèd seraph, Cherubim with sleepless eye, Veil their faces to the presence, As with ceaseless voice they cry: Alleluia, Alleluia Alleluia, Lord Most High! Scot said the first time he heard this experienced well he was in the choir of the Pontifical North American College during the Liturgy in St. Peter's Basilica for the ordination of deacons. He talked about how the song built up from silence to a triumphal Alleluia. Rick said he also chose this hymn because he loved a Gustav Holst arrangement of this hymn. Next for Fr. Chris is the Taize chant . He said it almost sounds like breathing in the rhythm. It translates as “Come Holy Spirit.” Fr. Chris said the chant is sung in successive different languages and it symbolizes Pentecost and how the Apostles were enabled to speak in many tongues. It also reminds us of the universality of the Catholic faith. Scot said it's a simple hymn to sing along to and to pray for a long time as it's sung. You don't need a hymnal, singing experience, or a singing voice. Everyone can participate in it. Fr. Chris talked about how the Holy Spirit is sometimes spoken of as the breath of God and how the hymn invokes the sense of breathing. Rick's second hymn is . He said it's one verse that's repeated over and over with slight changes. Sing to the Lord a new song: sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord and bless his name: proclaim his salvation every day without end. Tell his glory among the nations: in every land tell his marvelous deeds. Cantate Domino canticum novum: cantate Domino omnis terra, Cantate Domino et benedicite nomini ejus: annuntiate de die in diem salutare ejus. Annuntiate inter gentes gloriam ejus: in omnibus populis mirabilia ejus. Rick said he tends to like happy music, that have a lot of harmonic movement. It's joyous praising. The words aren't ambiguous and there's not a lot of hidden meaning. He said as he was learning Latin in high school after having learned this, he began to appreciate it more. He encouraged others to learn the meaning of the Latin words. Fr. Chris said they do a fair bit of Latin at the seminary. He has a strong belief we should know what we're singing, saying, and praying and is always grateful to see the English translation. The Latin helps us to transcend the here and now. Scot said there's something about the use of language to bring our minds to God and to bring heaven to earth. Scot's third hymn is All People That on Earth Do Dwell, also sometimes called the Old One Hundredth. . All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice. Him serve with fear, His praise forth tell; Come ye before Him and rejoice. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed; Without our aid He did us make; We are His folk, He doth us feed, And for His sheep He doth us take. O enter then His gates with praise; Approach with joy His courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless His Name always, For it is seemly so to do. For why? the Lord our God is good; His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure. To Father, Son and Holy Ghost, The God Whom Heaven and earth adore, From men and from the angel host Be praise and glory evermore. Scot said he loves big organ hymns, but loves all types of music too. But no other instrument cranks as hard as the organ on this song and you can sing as hard as you'd like. He said the interlude before the last verse makes him joyful. Fr. Chris said it's based on Psalm 100. Rick said the first time he'd heard this song on a big organ was it was played on the giant organ at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. Fr. Chris said the next is a Christmas hymn and it will be jumping the gun a bit to hear it now: . O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘Til He appear'd and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night, O night Divine. Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men from Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend! Behold your King, Before Him lowly bend! Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother; And in His name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord! O praise His Name forever, His power and glory evermore proclaim. His power and glory evermore proclaim. Scot said it's his favorite Christmas hymn as well. He and Fr. Chris said they broke the rules by playing it before Thanksgiving. Fr. Chris said it was a French poem written by a layman at the request of this priest. Scot said it's the kind of hymn that can be sung by both men and women equally. Fr. Chris said his Christmas Eve tradition when he leaves his sister's home as he drives through Brighton is to play this song very loudly. Scot repeated his request for listeners to send their list of three to Live@thegoodcatholiclife.com

It was a picture of the real Lamb of God, Messiah Jesus, who would come one day to make the one-time FINAL SUPREME sacrifice for the sins of the world. When God greated man, He created a body from the dust of the ground. The body was prepared by God's Spirit. Then I said, 'Behold, I have come – in the volume of the book it is written of me – to do your will, O God.'” This is the fulfillment of a Messianic prophecy in Psalm 40:6-8, written 1,000 years before Christ as a psalm of King David. God prepared a body for His Son, Jesus, before Bethlehem. Jesus' BLOOD was NOT contaminated by Adam's sin which brought sin, sickness, and death into human blood. Adam introduced death into the human family. “Therefore, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and therefore death spread to all men …” (Romans 5:12) Thank God, we have been BOUGHT BACK with the BLOOD of Christ, a different category of blood – priceless – containing God's life, which could pay for our sins! “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordianed before the foundation of the world, but was manifest (revealed) in these last times for you, who through Him believe in God, Who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” (1 Peter 1:18-21) It's interesting to note that one of the names of the devil is “Beelzebub.” The original Hebrew name means “Lord of the flies” and was the name of a Philistine god. It was a “dung god.” What a wonderful title for Satan: “Lord of the maggots … the manure god.” Dead blood draws flies. However, the GOOD NEWS is that the BLOOD of Jesus repulses Satan and his demons. Speak the BLOOD over your home and family. Just as the Israelites applied the BLOOD to their doors so that the death angel would pass over (see Exodus Chapter 12), so you can apply the BLOOD of Christ over your family and home by speaking it in faith over them. Declare the BLOOD of Christ over your loved ones daily and over all that God has given you by birth, adoption, or assignment! Hebrews 9:22 tells us: “And according to the (Levitical) law, almost all thigs arepurified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is not remission.” The Greek word for “remission” here used is “aphesis” (from “aphiemi,” meaning “to send away”). It's a release from bondage or imprisonment, a dismissal or sending away, and also forgiveness.” It is also used for “cancelling out all judgment, punishment, obligation, or debt.” It is deliverance, liberty, remission, and forgiveness! Many people quote Hebrews 9:22 wrongly and end the verse using the words: “there is no remission of sins.” But … it is MUCH MORE: it is remission of sin, sickness, poverty, oppression, demon possession. It is spiritual, mental, physical, material, financial, social, and relational remission … including remission of ancestral and generational curses. The BLOOD of Christ has present active energy. The BLOOD prevails. USE it! Baruch haba b'Shem Adonai. Summary of today's show: The Easter Vigil is the Super Bowl of liturgies in the Catholic Church calendar, with our most beautiful prayers and symbols and imagery, encapsulating all of Salvation History. For the first time this Easter, we will hear the prayers using the new translation of the Roman Missal, which restores the beautiful phrase lost over time. Fr. Jonathan Gaspar joins Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams to discuss the Easter Vigil and especially to chant the Exsultet, the Easter Proclamation, like you've never heard before. Listen to the show: Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams Today's guest(s): Fr. Jonathan Gaspar, Director of the Office for Divine Worship Links from today's show: Today's topics: The Easter Vigil Liturgy 1st segment: Scot and Fr. Matt discussed the topic for today's show which will be the Super Bowl of liturgies, the Easter Vigil on Saturday evening. Fr. Jonathan Gaspar, the director of the Office for Worship will assist them with examining the Vigil Mass. Fr. Matt will be very busy on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, starting in Nahant and engaging in many service projects with the Hunger for Justice retreat for high school students. Fr. Matt said he has only been the main celebrant of the Easter Vigil liturgy once as a priest, because he's either been a parochial vicar or head of the Office for the New Evangelization of Youth and Young Adults and it's usually the pastor who celebrates. Also, tonight is the last opportunity for The Light Is On For You, to go to confession in any parish or chapel in the archdiocese from 6:30-8pm. Scot welcomed Fr. Jonathan to the show and said over the past year he;s been helping people adapt to the changes in the Roman Missal. Fr. Jonathan said all the texts of the Mass have changed and the Easter vigil is no different. He said the texture of the language is changed, phrases that were lost in the old translation have been restored, including language related to the work of Creation in preparing the liturgy./ Scot said the Mass is usually in two parts: Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist. But the Easter Vigil is not just two parts. Fr. Jonathan said the Easter vigil is four parts: We begin with the Service of Light, the blessing of the fire in darkness outside of the church. This blazing fire scatters the darkness of night. This goes back to the second century and Eusebius refers to this in the fourth century, saying the Easter fire illuminated the city of Byzantium. The deacon or priest then proclaims the great praise of Easter. Scot talked about taking small children to the Easter Vigil, how they will love seeing all the different aspects. He suggested sitting in the back to see the events surrounding the lighting of candles. Then there is the Liturgy of the Word. There are seven readings from the Old Testament, which are the story of Salvation History, how the love f God for his people culminated in Easter; the Epistle from the New Testament; and the Gospel. Fr. Jonathan said it tells the story of how God remembers his covenant even when we have failed to love him. It tells the story of God calling us back each time, reestablishing his covenant. Finally the Father sends His Son to establish a new eternal covenant that will never be broken. Scot said you can't walk away from the Vigil without being aware of God's love for us. The third part of the Vigil is also different. It's the celebration of the sacraments of initiation for candidates and catechumens. During Lent they have been preparing through prayer and examination of themselves to receive these sacraments. They receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and the Eucharist. This part also helps everyone renew their baptismal promises. In a beautiful way we relight our own candles. The water of the baptism is sprinkled upon the people, reminding us of the blood of the sacrifice of the lambs sprinkled over the people of Israel during the first Passover in Egypt. Scot said it also reminds us of our own baptism. Fr. Jonathan said a funeral liturgy is like a mini-Easter Vigil, from the way t he body is greeted at the door to the church and blessed and carried forward and clothed in baptismal gowns and the use of the paschal candle and more. Fr. Matt said the funeral is first and foremost a celebration of the paschal mystery of Christ. The fourth part is the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Fr. Jonathan said every Mass is a celebration of the special meaning that the Eucharist has on Easter, receiving the risen body and blood of our Lord. Fr. Jonathan said at the cathedral they have the blessing of the fire outside because the rubrics say it should be a roaring fire. Then they will hold a procession around the cathedral. CatholicTV will broadcast the Easter vigil. Scot said the Mass always has to start after dark. Fr. Jonathan said this goes back to the 2nd century. In the 7th century they started creeping back the vigil to Saturday morning, but in 1951 the Vatican released a new text for the vigil that required that it take place after dark and finish before dawn. In the Archdiocese of Boston, parishes cannot begin until after 8pm. How can Christ cast out darkness if the sun is still shining. The symbolism speaks volumes when done in a dark church. Fr. Jonathan said at the beginning of the Liturgy the priest blesses the fire. The fire represents purification, passion, and illumination. The first should represent our passion for evangelization. Dear brethren (brothers and sisters), on this most sacred night, in which our Lord Jesus Christ passed over from death to life, the Church calls upon her sons and daughters, scattered throughout the world, to come together to watch and pray. Ifwe keep the memorial of the Lord's paschal solemnity in this way, listening to his word and celebrating his mysteries, then we shall have the sure hope of sharing his triumph over death and living with him in God. Then the Priest blesses the fire, saying with hands extended: Let us pray. o God, who through your Son bestowed upon the faithful the fire of your glory, sanctify this new fire, we pray, and grant that, by these paschal celebrations, we may be so inflamed with heavenly desires, that with minds made pure we may attain festivities of unending splendor. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen. They then bless the candle, and the priest inserts some Greek letters and the numbers of the year. The priest then puts five spikes of incense. Incense is part of sacrifice and the incense signifies that the candle itself burns in praise. The incense is inserted in a shape of cross, representing the wounds of Christ. The candles is a symbol of the resurrected and glorified body of Christ. After the blessing of the new fire, one of the ministers brings the paschal candle to the Priest, who cuts a cross into the candle with a stylus. Then he makes the Greek letter Alpha above the cross, the letter Omega below, and the four numerals of the current year between the arms of the cross, saying meanwhile: 1. Christ yesterday and today (he cuts a vertical line); 2. the Beginning and the End (he cuts a horizontal line); 3. the Alpha (he cuts the letter Alpha above the vertical line); 4. and the Omega (he cuts the letter Omega below the vertical line). 5. All time belongs to him (he cuts the first numeral of the current year in the upper left comer of the cross); 6. and all the ages (he cuts the second numeral of the current year in the upper right comer of the cross). 7. To him be glory and power (he cuts the third numeral of the current year in the lower left comer of the cross); 8. through every age and for ever. Amen (he cuts the fourth numeral of the current year in the lower right comer of the cross). [Insert inscription diagram for candle, cf. Missale Romanum, p. 339] When the cutting of the cross and of the other signs has been completed, the Priest may insert five grains of incense into the candle in the form of a cross, meanwhile saying: By his holy (Insert incense diagram for candle, cf. Missale Romanum, p. 339] and glorious wounds, may Christ the Lord guard us and protect us. Amen. The candle is lit from the bonfire and the priest sings, and the deacon leads the procession of the people into the church, reminding us of the Israelites being led by God as a pillar of fire from Egypt through the darkness of the wilderness into the Promised Land. The church is the promised land, a sign of the eternal reward. Scot said he loves to see the church become lit up with the candles held by individual parishioners. It showcases the beauty of the churches lit only by candlelight, showing us how churches have traditionally been lit throughout the centuries. Fr. Jonathan said the new fire blessed in the bonfire is brought into the church by the paschal candle for all the individual candles and all the lamps of the church. The deacon sings a proclamation three times. This when the electric lights are turned on. At this point the Easter proclamation is chanted. Fr. Jonathan said it is an over-excited expresso not Easter joy. In the old liturgy the priests were still in the purple of Lent, while the deacon was in the Easter color of white or gold. He sings of the joy of the Paschal Candle, which tells the story of our redemption and the mystery of the Easter vigil. It probably goes back to the third or fourth century and it originated in or around southern Italy. The chant itself is an ancient chant. There is both a new text and new music this year and it's the only time in the liturgy that Gregorian chant is permitted to be over the top. We heard a recording of the Exsultet made at St. Cecilia Parish in Boston: Exult, let them exult, the hosts of heaven, exult, let Angel ministers of God exult, let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty King's triumph! Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her, ablaze with light from her eternal King, let all comers of the earth be glad, knowing an end to gloom and darkness. This was the first section of the Easter Proclamation. Scot said he doesn't recall hearing the beautiful imagery of the building shaking with the voices of the people. That's how he envisions heaven to be: Heaven rocks because everyone participates fully. Fr. Matt said when you've been entering the spirit of Lent and the Triduum, there's a sense of your heartbreaking for Him along with Our Lady. And then the Holy Light and the church lights up and the proclamation says there's great hope in the Resurrection. It's amazing how you enter into realizing that without Christ there is darkness, but with the Resurrection there is great hope and joy. there's something that happens in you that lifts up your spirit. Scot said all of Creation sings aloud the triumph of the cross and all Creation on earth is to be glad. The Church is involved in that. Fr. Jonathan said every single word is packed with joy. He said musically you hear all those beautiful lines. He said parts of the chant sound like bells and he's convinced that when the bells of Westminster Abbey were made, they had this chant in mind. Another line sounds like a trumpet. The music matches up with the imagery of the text. He said are not to be shy as Christians. We have mighty voices because of what we celebrate this evening. At the end of this section, it shows that tonight we celebrate the Christian Passover. For this next section, the music changes, and we hear longer notes for the great mystery that is being proclaimed: This is the night, when once you led our forebears, Israel's children, from slavery in Egypt and made them pass dry-shod through the Red Sea. Scot said his favorite line was “to ransom a slave you gave away your Son! O truly necessary sin of Adam, destroyed completely by the Death of Christ! O happy fault that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer!” Fr. Matt said the words before it are different from the previous translation because now they emphasis the love of God, love beyond all telling. Fr. Jonathan said these all come from St. Ambrose's commentary on Scripture. His favorite line is “Our birth would have been no gain, had we not been redeemed.” Fr. Matt recalled the imagery of Christ breaking the prison bars of death. R. Amen. Scot encourages all listeners to come to the Easter Vigil at any parish in the Archdiocese. Fr. Jonathan said the morning star is the last star seen before the sun comes up. In Christian thought, Christ is the star that never sets.
