For the second episode in a row, we promise to deliver a thrilling discussion about two brands of Japanese cameras that have more in common than you might think.  Fuji and Ricoh both started making products for the photography industry right before the war, but originally started out in different industries, for Fuji, it was celluloid plastics and Ricoh (then called Riken) it was as a chemicals research company.  Each took a path making lenses and cameras, but in both instances photography was never each company's main focus.  Both Fuji and Ricoh invested heavily in the photocopier industry in the later part of the 20th century, and both successfully made the jump into the digital camera world.  Both companies continue to make new cameras today, Fuji with their excellent lineup of X-Series digital mirrorless, and Ricoh with their GR point and shoots and their ownership of the Pentax brand. In this episode, Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike are joined by Paul's personal Fuji rep, Bob Grzesiak, returning callers, Brad Swain, Howard Sandler, Mark Faulkner, Miles Libak, and first time caller, Dan Cuny. We extensively cover many of Fuji's medium format cameras from the Texas Leica, their variety of 4.5x6, 6x7, 6x8, 6x9, and even their lone 6x12 model, plus the company's mid century rangefinders, the extremely compact and very quirky Fujica Mini, their entry into SLRs with the Fujicarex, the Fuji ST-series, and the unloved Fuji AX-series.  For Ricoh, time is spent on their Auto-Half series and Hi-Color 35, along with some of Ricoh's screw mount SLRs and Mike's favorite Ricoh, the Anscomark M interchangeable lens rangefinder camera. In addition, we get to hear which of these two companies used to throw the best parties for camera dealers, a little bit of history regarding the Fuji Finepix S-Series DSLRs, a bit about the Ricoh GR-series, plus a strange digital camera that had not only interchangeable lenses, but also interchangeable sensors, plus some bonus discussion about Mamiya Prismat "bastard cameras" like the original Ricoh Singlex with the "sorta" Nikon F-mount, and a strange Tower branded camera made by Mamiya with an Ihagee Exakta lens mount and a Canon lens. This proved to be a very lively discussion, covering a huge amount of different camera models from two brands that don't get discussed nearly as often as others.  If you find that your collection is thin on cameras by either of these manufacturers, this is the episode that will surely flare up a case of GAS.  Get ready to open your wallet! For the next episode, we will be exploring the world of third party lens makers like Vivitar, Sigma, Tamron, Spiratone and many others, plus we hope to revisit a topic that started in a thread on the Camerosity Podcast Facebook group regarding home processing.  Episode 74 will be recorded on Monday, July 22nd at 7pm Central Daylight Time and 8pm Eastern Daylight Time. featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2612: Nihonium Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 29 June 2024 is Nihonium.Nihonium, originally named ununtrium, is a synthetic chemical element; it has symbol Nh and atomic number 113. It is extremely radioactive: its most stable known isotope, nihonium-286, has a half-life of about 10 seconds. In the periodic table, nihonium is a transactinide element in the p-block. It is a member of period 7 and group 13.Nihonium was first reported to have been created in experiments being carried out between 14 July to August 10, 2003, by a Russian–American collaboration at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia working in collaboration with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, and in July 23, 2004, by a team of Japanese scientists at Riken in Wakō, Japan. The confirmation of their claims in the ensuing years involved independent teams of scientists working in the United States, Germany, Sweden, and China, as well as the original claimants in Russia and Japan. In 2015, the IUPAC/IUPAP Joint Working Party recognised the element and assigned the priority of the discovery and naming rights for the element to Riken. The Riken team suggested the name nihonium in 2016, which was approved in the same year. The name comes from the common Japanese name for Japan (日本, nihon).Very little is known about nihonium, as it has only been made in very small amounts that decay within seconds. The anomalously long lives of some superheavy nuclides, including some nihonium isotopes, are explained by the "island of stability" theory. Experiments support the theory, with the half-lives of the confirmed nihonium isotopes increasing from milliseconds to seconds as neutrons are added and the island is approached. Nihonium has been calculated to have similar properties to its homologues boron, aluminium, gallium, indium, and thallium. All but boron are post-transition metals, and nihonium is expected to be a post-transition metal as well. It should also show several major differences from them; for example, nihonium should be more stable in the +1 oxidation state than the +3 state, like thallium, but in the +1 state nihonium should behave more like silver and astatine than thallium. Preliminary experiments in 2017 showed that elemental nihonium is not very volatile; its chemistry remains largely unexplored. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 29 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Nihonium on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kendra.

Japan's Fugaku supercomputer developed by the Riken research group and Fujitsu has been ranked the world's most powerful supercomputer for the seventh time in a row since 2020. Meanwhile, a group including several Japanese universities has said it will use Fugaku to develop tools using generative artificial intelligence. In other news, Japan is considering a revamp of its tax-free shopping system following the growing trend of reselling tax-free goods overseas. And finally, the lone yokozuna-level sumo wrestler ‘Terunofuji' and the former ozeki-level ‘Asanoyama' both lead the field yesterday at this year's Summer Grand Sumo Tournament taking place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena from May 14th until the 28th. And with the current Netflix drama “Sanctuary” proving a hit, we head to Ryogoku. Satoshi Matsuoka (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoshi_Matsuoka) from April 2018 has been the director of Riken Center for Computational Science (R-CCS), the Tier-1 national HPC center for Japan, developing and hosting Japan's flagship ‘Fugaku' supercomputer which has become the fastest supercomputer in the world in all four major supercomputer rankings in 2020 and 2021 (Top500, HPCG, HPL-AI, Graph500), along with multitudes of ongoing cutting edge HPC research being conducted, including investigating Post-Moore era computing, especially the future FugakuNEXT supercomputer.  He was the leader of the TSUBAME series of supercomputers that had also received many international acclaims, at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he still holds a professor position, to continue his research activities in HPC as well as scalable Big Data and AI.  His longtime contribution was commended with the Medal of Honor with Purple ribbon by his Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan in 2022. Other accolades include the Fellow positions in societies/conferences ACM, ISC, and the JSSST; the ACM Gordon Bell Prizes in 2011 & 2021; the IEEE-CS Sidney Fernbach Award in 2014 as well as the IEEE-CS Computer Society Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award in 2022, both being the highest awards in the field of HPC, and the only individual to receive both awards; the Technical Papers Chair and the Program Chair for ACM/IEEE Supercomputing 2009 and 2013 (SC09 and SC13) respectively as well as many other conference chairs, and the ACM Gordon Bell Prize selection committee chair in 2018. In this interview, Professor Satoshi Matsuoka shared some of the highlights from his talk at SuperComputingAsia 2023 (Singapore), including the supercomputing developments in Japan, and Fugaku, the largest in Japan and one of the first 'exascale' supercomputers of the world. With applications ranging from manufacturing, disaster prevention to creating new drugs, he noted that supercomputers allow us to investigate the past, and to predict the future.  To give the audience context, Professor compares Fugaku supercomputer to everyday applications such as gaming (create “virtual worlds, but much more in a scientific way”), and smart phones (20 million times more powerful than a smartphone). In terms of power consumption, it is equivalent to running the Tokyo Disney Resort, and as such, power efficiency is critical in the overall management and operations of Fugaku – especially with carbon neutrality as a key agenda topic today. Professor Satoshi Matsuoka also touched on cybersecurity and how privacy and anonymisiation are growing areas of focus with the increasing adoption of digital twins in medical sciences. Wrapping up, he pointed out some short term goals for supercomputing in Japan to realise further synergies with the “IT” industry, and the efforts for the successor of Fugaku, FugakuNEXT, to be deployed around 2029. Recorded 28th February 2023, 12noon, SuperComputingAsia 2023, Singapore Expo.

While it may sound like something that has crawled out of your nightmares, cyborg cockroaches have arrived as friends rather than foes. Scientists in Japan have designed a new remote-controlled insect, equipped with a battery 'backpack' that is powered by solar panels. Thecockroach, which is part insect and part machine, is intended to enterhazardous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged. The researchers from the RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research had to install some components into a tiny pack to allow for all the roach's natural movements. Lead author Kenjiro Fukuda said: 'The body-mounted ultrathin organic solar cell module achieves a power output of 17.2 mW, which is more than 50 times larger than the power output of current state-of-the art energy harvesting devices on living insects.' Famously able to survive a nuclear war, cockroaches have been the inspiration for a number of technologies in recent years. Different teams of scientists have designed remote-controlled robo-bugs that canscale walls, carry objects and find humans during search-and-rescue missions. The cockroaches are still alive, but wires attached to their two 'cerci' - sensory organs on the end of their abdomens - send electrical impulses that cause the insect to move right or left. A battery is necessary for the sending and receiving of these electrical signals, which needs to be charged up. While it's possible to build docking stations for recharging the battery, the need to return and recharge could disrupt time-sensitive missions. The RIKEN team wanted to create a more practical version that did not need to return to a docking station when it ran out of power.RIKEN团队希望打造一个更实用的蟑螂机器人,在电源耗尽时不需要返回充电站。Therefore, they designed an on-board solar cell that could continuously ensure that the cockroach stays charged while it works. However, cockroaches have a limited surface area available for all the components necessary to move its legs and keep it powered. The solution, published in npj Flexible Electronics, was to design a special 'backpack' that could neatly carry both the wireless leg-control module and rechargeable lithium polymer battery. This was attached to the top of the insect on itsthorax, and was 3D printed to fit perfectly to the curved surface of the Madagascar cockroach or Gromphadorhina portentosa. It allowed for this electronic device to be stably mounted on the insect for over a month, while leaving space elsewhere on the body to implant the solar panel. The 0.004 mm thick organic solar cell module was mounted on the dorsal side of the roach's abdomen.0.004毫米厚的有机太阳能电池模块安装在蟑螂腹部的背侧。Cockroach英[ˈkɒkrəʊtʃ]美[ˈkɑkroʊtʃ]n. They demonstrated the method on two gold electrodes. To make the two pieces of gold bond, the researchers treated the gold with water vapor plasma. The researchers used this technique to electrically connect the gold electrodes of an organic photovoltaic to an organic light-emitting diode without adding significant thickness, thereby ensuring the flexibility of the device.

All sjukdom döda. Vandrar du i syfilisspår blir du snabbt smittad. Eggerts skelett vittrar i tredje stadiet. I fattiga länder kvarstår lidandet. Elisas Wraak (Alastor press). Welcome to the World news. World news keeps you updated news around the nations. Today's topic is "Japan's Fugaku Supercomputer is Helping Fight COVID-19" Scientists around the world are trying to find effective treatments for COVID-19, and they're getting extra support from Fugaku, a Japanese supercomputer. Fugaku — also another name for Mount Fuji — is kept in Kobe, Japan. Its installation began in December 2019, and even though it is not scheduled for full operation until 2021, it has been helping with coronavirus research since April 2020. The supercomputer has identified dozens of possible treatments for COVID-19. Researchers from Kyoto University used it to run molecular-level simulations on 2,128 existing drugs. Over ten days, it looked for those that can bond with proteins associated with the novel coronavirus and inactivate them. The dozens of drugs it identified include 12 that are already being tested around the world to treat the virus, but also a number that have not yet been looked at by scientists. Research company Riken, which developed the supercomputer with Fujitsu, have also used it to model how the virus could travel through the air in different places. Findings from that study suggest that keeping the windows on commuter trains open and limiting the number of passengers could reduce the risk of infection. Among the other research projects that could use Fugaku are those trying to find previously unknown characteristics of the still very new virus. The supercomputer could also be used to better understand the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, and contribute to countermeasures against the spread of the virus. In June 2020, Fugaku was named the world's fastest supercomputer. It can perform 415 quadrillion computations a second, which is 2.8 times faster than the former fastest supercomputer, the Summit system from the US. Fugaku is set to play a part in helping Japan achieve the goals in its Society 5.0 plan, which looks to use technology and data to balance economic growth with resolving social problems. Other than helping with medical science, it could be used to better predict natural disasters like earthquakes, or help with the development of clean energy.

A few years ago, a group of physicists created an unusual, never-before-seen subatomic particle. Using a particle accelerator at Riken, a Japanese research institute, they slammed streams of calcium nuclei against a metal disk, over and over, for hours at a time. Then, sifting through the aftermath of the collisions, they found their coveted particle. They named their creation: sodium. That's right, sodium.

The COCC will be involved in collaborative developmental biology and regenerative medicine research projects with the goal of investigating disease mechanisms and discovering new drugs and therapeutic applications. The purpose of the COCC is not only to make new discoveries through such collaborative research projects, but also to train the next generation of scientists by hosting joint seminars and offering opportunities for personnel exchange. In connection with the opening of the COCC, the first steering committee meeting was held on September 6 at Otsuka in Tokushima to discuss the Center’s plans for collaborative research, information exchange, and personnel exchange. The RIKEN CDB Director, Hiroshi Hamada, M.D., Ph.D., presented a brief overview of RIKEN and the research in which it has been involved, and the RIKEN CDB Team Leader, Minoru Takasato, Ph.D., gave a presentation on kidney regeneration research using human-derived cells, which led to an animated discussion with Otsuka researchers. RIKEN CDB is a world-class research institution for basic research in the field of developmental biology and regenerative medicine. RIKEN has recently become known for its participation in the first clinical research in the world on the use of iPS cells in age-related macular degeneration, which has become an increasingly common cause of blindness in recent years. The COCC will be involved in joint research projects aimed at developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases and kidney diseases, which have been important areas of research for Otsuka.

White blood cell (WBC) count is a common clinical measure from complete blood count assays, and it varies widely among healthy individuals. Total WBC count and its constituent subtypes have been shown to be moderately heritable, with the heritability estimates varying across cell types. We studied 19,509 subjects from seven cohorts in a discovery analysis, and 11,823 subjects from ten cohorts for replication analyses, to determine genetic factors influencing variability within the normal hematological range for total WBC count and five WBC subtype measures. Cohort specific data was supplied by the CHARGE, HeamGen, and INGI consortia, as well as independent collaborative studies. We identified and replicated ten associations with total WBC count and five WBC subtypes at seven different genomic loci (total WBC count-6p21 in the HLA region, 17q21 near ORMDL3, and CSF3; neutrophil count-17q21; basophil count-3p21 near RPN1 and C3orf27; lymphocyte count-6p21, 19p13 at EPS15L1; monocyte count-2q31 at ITGA4, 3q21, 8q24 an intergenic region, 9q31 near EDG2), including three previously reported associations and seven novel associations. To investigate functional relationships among variants contributing to variability in the six WBC traits, we utilized gene expression-and pathways-based analyses. We implemented gene-clustering algorithms to evaluate functional connectivity among implicated loci and showed functional relationships across cell types. Gene expression data from whole blood was utilized to show that significant biological consequences can be extracted from our genome-wide analyses, with effect estimates for significant loci from the meta-analyses being highly corellated with the proximal gene expression. In addition, collaborative efforts between the groups contributing to this study and related studies conducted by the COGENT and RIKEN groups allowed for the examination of effect homogeneity for genome-wide significant associations across populations of diverse ancestral backgrounds.
