Do your children really know who you are?Not just the mother who managed schedules, emotions, and daily life—but the woman underneath it all?Motherhood shifts in midlife—so do we. Maybe you're navigating an empty nest, single motherhood, or a quieter new chapter—you may find yourself asking deeper questions about identity, inner peace, and how to stay meaningfully connected to the people you love most.In this episode of Confessions of a Freebird, I sit down with Bernadette Catalana, author of Daughter Lessons and mother of two, for a heartfelt and honest conversation about mother–daughter relationships, generational healing, and leading by example.Together, we explore what it means to love our children with intention while staying true to ourselves. Bernadette opens up about the weight of people-pleasing, the emotional realities of single motherhood, and how she carried her own mother's sorrow before consciously choosing to break that cycle. We talk about family dynamics and how generational healing often happens in the most ordinary moments—and why finding happiness isn't something we arrive at, but something we practice along the way. This conversation is for any woman in midlife who is learning how to release old roles, speak her truth, and model emotional freedom for the next generation. In this episode, you'll hear us explore:Why truth-telling is a radical act for women raised to keep the peaceHow personal growth and identity shift in midlife—especially after children grow upWhat it really means to lead by example as a motherHow emotional healing in parents breaks generational trauma from being passed down. The unseen weight of single motherhood—and why it deserves more compassionHow family dynamics and generational patterns show up in everyday lifeWhy choosing contentment over performance can deepen your relationship with your childrenYou are still deeply needed. Your presence still matters. And this season of life holds more meaning, connection, and love than you may realize. If you're ready to embrace this next chapter with honesty and heart, I invite you to listen in and join us for this rich, reflective conversation.Much love,LaurieClick here  to sign up for my FREE Somatic class on Wednesday, February 4th at 4pm PSTClick here to fill out my Podcast survey for 2026.Click here to learn about my NEW “Nervous System Regulation Starter Kit” Click here to purchase my book: Sandwiched: A Memoir of Holding On and Letting GoFree ResourcesClick here to schedule a FREE inquiry call with me.Click here for my FREE “Beginner's Guide to Somatic Healing”Click here for my FREE Core Values ExercisePlease leave me feedback. In this conversation, Chris Trottie (Trottie Golf) pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to walk away from corporate security, bet on yourself, and build a data-driven golf brand from scratch—all while being a present dad, husband, and serious player.  We dig into identity, pressure, energy management, and how to use data and equipment the right way to actually lower your scores instead of just chasing new gear. In this episode, you'll learn: How Chris reinvented himself from tour rep to global brand—and the identity he had to let go of. Why he spent five years quietly preparing his "rope bridge" before finally making the jump. How to use data to build unshakable confidence in your game and your business decisions. The overlooked power of time to think—and why surfing and golf became his "boardroom." How to set realistic expectations on the course using dispersion, not fantasy. Why your clubs should evolve as your handicap drops—and when to get re-fit. How to structure your days, guard your energy, and use "treats" and trips as ROI, not guilt. Get your pencils ready and start listening.  P.P.S. Curious to learn more about the results my clients are experiencing and what they say about working with me? Read more here. More About Trottie Chris "Trottie" Trott is one of the most respected figures in the modern golf equipment world, known globally for his expertise in club fitting, product education, and tour-level equipment performance.  He spent more than 20 years with TaylorMade Golf, working directly with some of the best players on the planet as a Tour Representative and Senior Manager of Global Sports Marketing. During his tenure, he became a trusted resource for elite pros seeking precise fittings, equipment adjustments, and performance insights. After two decades inside one of the most influential brands in the game, Trottie transitioned into entrepreneurship, building Trottie Golf into a leading digital resource for golfers who want to understand their equipment on a deeper, data-driven level.  Through his YouTube channel—which now serves as his primary platform—he breaks down complex club concepts, showcases tour player insights, and educates everyday golfers on how to choose gear that actually improves performance. Data is the antidote to doubt in both golf and business; when the numbers prove it works, you stop negotiating with your fear. If your equipment isn't evolving as your game improves, your clubs become a bottleneck, not a competitive advantage. Most golfers don't struggle with talent—they struggle with expectations that don't match their actual dispersion and ability. Time isn't your most valuable currency—high-quality energy is, and every late night, drink, or distraction taxes your upside. You can't go far alone; building a trusted team around your strengths multiplies your impact while you stay in your zone of genius. Strategic self-rewards—cars, trips, retreats, club memberships—aren't indulgences, they're symbols and fuel that keep you chasing the next level. Key Quotes: "I realized the only way I was going to unlock my full potential was to back myself—and at some point, not jumping became the bigger risk." "None of the businesses I'm involved in work without me; once I accepted that, every negotiation and decision became a lot clearer." "If your expectations are higher than what the data says you're capable of, you're signing up for constant disappointment and terrible decisions on the course." "I spent five years building a rope bridge into a concrete bridge—by the time I stepped on it, I'd have been an idiot not to go." "You can work three weeks insanely hard and not see a nickel, then have five quiet days and everything hits—that's the reality of betting on yourself." "If you want your name to mean something in this game, you have to risk more than the person who's happy staying on the paved road." "Most people dream of success; the few who actually get it are the ones who wake up, protect their energy, and work hard at it every single day." What followed was not a bucket-list journey, but a deeper exploration of identity, perspective, and shared humanity. Learning along his journey that the most meaningful travel experiences are not about destinations, but about who we become along the way. A journey that he detailed in his book, Filling My Bucket - A Year of Solo Travel Across Seven Continents.Throughout the conversation, Cole reflects on moments of growth, the unseen support of those cheering him on, and how choosing grace and perspective in unfamiliar situations reshaped how he views success and fulfillment. He speaks candidly about learning that he was enough, about expanding what he once thought was possible, and about recognizing that life's defining moments are not endings, but beginnings. This episode of At the Podium is a reflection on solo travel, courage, gratitude, and the quiet work of becoming yourself in a world far larger, and more connected, than we often realize.*The beautiful photography featured in this episode was shot by Cole.

Exiles are the parts of ourselves that carry deep emotional pain and vulnerability, often pushed away by our protective mechanisms to help us cope with overwhelming experiences. Tim emphasizes the importance of recognizing these exiled parts, which can manifest as feelings of shame, grief, or rejection, and how they influence our current behaviors and reactions. He shares personal anecdotes to illustrate how these exiles can be approached with compassion rather than criticism, allowing for healing and integration into our broader self-system.Tim also discusses the role of 'protectors,' the parts of us that work tirelessly to shield our exiles from pain. These protectors may manifest as perfectionism, over-functioning, or numbing behaviors. He highlights that while these protectors are often seen as problematic, they are actually devoted guardians trying to keep us safe. The episode encourages listeners to gently engage with their exiles, fostering a sense of safety and connection, which can lead to a more harmonious internal experience. Tim concludes with practical steps for listeners to begin this journey of self-discovery and healing.KeywordsInternal Family Systems, exiles, protectors, emotional healing, self-compassion, mental health, Tim Fortescue, IFS Meditations, personal growth, inner childTakeawaysExiles carry our deepest pain and vulnerability.Protectors are devoted guardians, not just problematic parts.Approaching exiles gently is a radical act of compassion.Exiles need to be met on their own terms, not forced into the light.Building trust with protectors allows for healing of exiled parts.Sound bites"Exiles don't need to be dragged into the light.""Approaching exiles gently is itself, a radical act.""It makes sense that some parts had to go underground."Chapters00:00 Introduction to IFS and Exiles00:46 Understanding Exiles and Their Impact05:01 The Role of Protectors in Our System07:53 Personal Story: Encountering My Exiles12:41 Gentle Approaches to Healing Exiles15:46 Practical Steps for Self-Discovery and Healing

Breaking Sexual Shame: Women's Bodies, Pleasure, and Self-Discovery with Dr. Stacy Friedman

When was the last time you truly prioritized your own pleasure? For over two decades, Dr. Stacy Friedman has been helping women understand what many were never taught: basic knowledge about their own bodies. With 26 years in medical practice and 20 years specializing in sexuality, she's witnessed how inadequate sex education and cultural shame leave women disconnected from their anatomy (even something as fundamental as the body organ called the clitoris). The conversation reveals a surprising statistic, only a small percentage of women achieve orgasm through penetration alone, yet this misconception persists. Dr. Friedman shares her personal transformation from ignorance about her own anatomy to owning an extensive collection of high-quality sex toys, emphasizing that modern toys have become empowering tools rather than sources of shame. Fact: The clitoris contains over 10,400 nerve endings, double that of the penis, underscoring women's significant sexual potential when they explore without limitation. After experiencing painful sex for six years following childbirth, Dr. Friedman found her purpose: helping others redefine intimacy beyond traditional intercourse. She recently launched The Purple Passion Project podcast and previously authored "Confessions and Lessons of a Sexpert." Affiliate link to the book Paperback  https://drstacyfriedman.com/ Listen to discover how prioritizing pleasure can transform your relationship and break generational cycles of shame and lack of female pleasure with sex. Bio: Dr. Stacy Friedman is a Clinical Sexologist, certified sex & intimacy coach, and the unapologetically bold host of The Purple Passion Project. With 26+ years in the medical field and 20+ years working in the sexuality field, Dr. Stacy helps people break down taboos, communicate clearly, and build hotter, healthier intimacy—without shame. She works with all aspects of sexuality but specializes in mismatched sex drives, alternative lifestyles, women who experience painful sex, low libido, and the LGBTQ community. Known for blending expertise with humor and heart, Dr. Stacy makes conversations about sex feel safe, real, and seriously empowering. Her motto: "My passion is to help you create yours." Because at the end of the day, you deserve connection that's honest, exciting, and hot as hell. Direct clitoral stimulation is essential for most women's pleasure rather than penetration alone. • **Most women don't orgasm through penetration alone** – challenging the widespread myth that vaginal intercourse is the primary or sufficient path to female orgasm, revealing a fundamental gap in sexual education and cultural bias. • **Sex toys are normalized tools for exploration, not replacements** – reframing vibrators and similar devices as legitimate aids for self-discovery and pleasure, equivalent to using any other tool, rather than signs of relationship inadequacy or dysfunction.

#202 - What if one hard rule could change the way you face everything from headwinds to heartbreak? I sat down with author and adventurer Teri Brown to unpack how a 3,102-mile tandem bike ride across America helped her leave an abusive past, reclaim her voice, and build a set of life rules sturdy enough to carry her through grief.Starting in Astoria and crossing Lolo Pass into Big Sky country, Teri and her husband Bruce pedaled through pandemic uncertainty, logistics stress, and days so hot the road rippled. Riding tandem forced a new kind of honesty: shared cadence, three-count stand breaks, and zero room for simmering resentment. A Dollar General parking lot became a place to name a hurt and move on. Montana gifted them wonder—horses racing uphill beside them, the Milky Way hanging close, and Comet NEOWISE blazing a tail across the night sky. Those moments of awe refueled their grit when flats stacked up and the wind turned cruel.Out of the ride came Ten Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure. “Never quit on a bad day” stopped a mid-ride collapse after three flats; “Do hard things” later became a mantra as Bruce faced glioblastoma. Terry read from the book at his bedside; he passed as she spoke those words, a final gift that still gets her up when grief says stay down. The finish line in Washington, D.C. unlocked a deeper shift: the question changed from “Can I?” to “What do I want?” She chose authorship, publishing novels that explore identity, war, resilience, and healing. If you're navigating burnout, rebuilding after loss, or wrestling with self-doubt, this conversation offers practical resilience, relationship tools, and a fresh definition of adventure: bigger than your plans, kinder than your fear, and honest about the work. Live Authentically and Function Effectively in All Areas of Your LifeIn this first-of-its-kind book, Sol Smith combines current research, his personal experience as a late-diagnosed autistic adult, and lessons learned as an educator to show how you can transcend common mischaracterizations, overcome shame, and gain the skills to flourish. Sol knows that neurodivergent people often feel that nothing they have been taught relates to how they experience the world. To resolve this conflict, they try to change or mask who they are, which can cause isolation, depression, and anxiety. He advises the opposite: Understand yourself, accept yourself, and reduce conflict. Designed to help you peel away the shell of inadequacy and self-blame that often comes with neurodivergence, The Autistic's Guide to Self-Discovery offers the necessary tools and knowledge to function effectively at home, at work, and in the wider world.Sol Smith spent nearly two decades as a college professor, always feeling and doing things a little out of step from everyone else, before realizing that his differences had a lot to do with his being autistic. He works with individuals and offers educational seminars about neurodiversity to business and community organizations. Summary In this episode of Goals Do Come, Doug Bennett reflects on the past year, sharing insights on personal growth, the importance of time management, and the concept of reinvention. He emphasizes that goals should be seen as a part of one's identity rather than mere wishes. The conversation also touches on the significance of quiet wins and the need for self-reflection in achieving personal aspirations. Takeaways Life is meant to be experienced, not endlessly planned. Reinvention is returning to yourself, but with better boundaries. Goals are not wishes; they are about becoming. Not every win deserves an announcement. You do not need a dramatic change to start. If you knew you had 10 good summers, would you prioritize differently? Reinvention gets a bad rap; it's not panic, it's growth. Most people do not need a new life; they need a redesigned one. How do you know it's time for a change? Goals do come only when they are your own. Greg R. Baird: When Your Story Saves a Life

In this powerful and heartfelt conversation, LGBTQ+ civil rights advocate and global lecturer Greg R. Baird sits down with David in Palm Springs to share his journey from growing up closeted in a small Michigan town to becoming a respected educator, storyteller, and champion for allyship. Greg opens up about coming out at 31, navigating painful family rejection, and the moments that shaped his calling—including a life-changing encounter with a student who credits his story with saving her life. Together, David and Greg explore the transformative power of storytelling, finding community after coming out, and learning to live with courage, connection, and authenticity at any age. This episode offers wisdom, warmth, and hope for anyone on their journey of self-acceptance and belonging.  Takeaways & Sound Bites  Growing up in a small, religious town made coming out feel impossible, but college provided Greg the first space where he could blossom and explore who he truly was.  Early advocacy began unintentionally, as Greg and his first boyfriend spoke to college classes about being gay—long before he saw himself as an activist.  Family responses to coming out were painful and complicated, but over time, Greg found peace through patience, education, and accepting what could not be changed.  Parents' understanding is shaped by what they know, and sometimes by those influencing them; change, when it comes, can be slow and surprising.  You can't change your parents—only yourself. Greg emphasizes honoring your truth, your energy, and your value, regardless of others' acceptance.  Storytelling is a transformative tool that can change hearts, minds, and even policy by revealing the humanity behind the issues.  A life-changing moment with a suicidal student affirmed Greg's calling to become a global lecturer—proof that sharing your story can save lives.  Coming out may not happen overnight, and each person must move at their own pace and readiness. There is no “right” timeline.  Finding community after coming out takes intention, whether through shared activities, meetups, support groups, hobbies, or interest-based circles.  Real connection requires stepping beyond apps and screens, leaning into face-to-face interactions that build genuine friendships.  Introverts, extroverts, and everyone in between can find their place—community can look like wine groups, sports leagues, sober spaces, Disney meetups, or coffee chats.  Self-acceptance is foundational; be patient with yourself and trust that your personality, confidence, and comfort in community will grow over time.  We need connection now more than ever, especially in a challenging social climate—putting yourself out there, even gently, opens emotional doors you never expected.  Letting people in, rather than “coming out,” can be a more compassionate and empowering way to frame revealing your authentic self.  You are not alone, and hearing stories like Greg's or those on Out Late With David can provide life-saving hope, community, and belonging.  Greg R. "Hip hop culture is a fuel for life… an organic healing culture with roots that empower both individuals and communities." – Dr. Raphael Travis On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth welcomes Dr. Raphael Travis, an educator, researcher, and social worker who has devoted his life to understanding how hip hop culture serves as a powerful tool for individual and collective healing. Dr. Travis traces hip hop's five key elements—MCing, breakdancing, DJing, graffiti, and knowledge of self—and discusses how each contributes to identity reconstruction, resilience, and post-traumatic growth. He reflects on his own lived experiences growing up in New York during the early days of hip hop, and shares stories from his work with youth in clinical and community settings. Listeners will explore how hip hop's expressive arts create vital counter narratives to trauma-induced identity threats and why culturally grounded modalities are essential for trauma transformation. Dr. Travis explains how shifting from a deficit-based to an empowerment-based approach to youth development can catalyze agency, belonging, and social change. He shares practical strategies—ranging from lyric analysis to innovative uses of technology like beat making and haptic devices—for building therapeutic connection and intentional healing within youth and communities. The conversation highlights the importance of relationship, positive development, and the transformative potential of the arts in fostering both individual and community recovery. In "Via Francigena: Slow Travel, History, and Self-Discovery on Foot," host Annie Sargent chats with Olivier Andrieu about his incredible 100-day journey along the Via Francigena. Olivier, a former corporate sales director, decided to quit his job and walk from Canterbury, England, to Rome, Italy. He wanted a fresh start and a challenge, and the Via Francigena provided both. Listen to this episode ad-free Olivier shares the highs and lows of his adventure. He walked an average of 25 kilometers per day, staying in convents, monasteries, and Airbnbs along the way. He met people from all over the world, discovered hidden historical gems, and immersed himself in the beauty of slow travel. Olivier's journey took him through England, France, Switzerland, and Italy, offering a rich tapestry of landscapes and cultures. One of the highlights of Olivier's journey was the historical discoveries he made. He learned about a young World War I soldier whose name was engraved in a church near his home. He visited the statue of Rodin in Calais and discovered convents just an hour's drive from his home that he had never seen before. These discoveries added depth and meaning to his journey, connecting him to the history and culture of the places he visited. Annie and Olivier also discuss practical tips for anyone considering a similar journey. Olivier recommends a 35-liter backpack and high-quality gear. He used Akileine Nok cream to prevent blisters and had minimal injuries throughout his journey. His packing tips and advice on finding accommodations are invaluable for anyone planning a long-distance walk. In the magazine segment, Annie critiques The New York Times' "36 Hours in Toulouse" article, emphasizing the importance of experiencing the city beyond a quick checklist. She also dives into the intricate work behind Paris's Christmas windows and updates listeners on the success of free-flow tolling on the A13 motorway.
