After spending more than three decades trying to suppress his sexuality, David Anderson reached a point where he could no longer ignore who he truly was. Raised in a conservative Southern Baptist environment, he prayed for years that being gay would simply disappear while building what appeared to be the perfect life—a 35-year marriage, four children, ministry, and a successful career.  In this deeply honest conversation, David shares the emotional cost of living behind a mask, the difficult decision to come out at 57, navigating a collaborative divorce, rebuilding relationships with his children, and discovering unexpected joy after embracing his authentic self. He also reflects on faith, family, finding love with his husband Peter, and why authenticity transformed every area of his life.  This episode is a powerful reminder that while coming out later in life is never easy, it's never too late to live honestly—and to find happiness you never thought possible.Takeaways1. Authenticity is worth the risk. After decades of trying to suppress who he was through faith, counseling, and sheer determination, David discovered that the freedom of living authentically transformed every area of his life—not just his relationships, but his confidence, career, and sense of self. 2. Coming out later in life affects the whole family—but healing is possible. David speaks candidly about navigating a collaborative divorce, supporting his former wife through the transition, rebuilding relationships with his children, and recognizing that everyone's journey toward acceptance unfolds on its own timeline. 3. Fear is often bigger than reality. For years, David believed coming out would destroy everything he loved. While the journey wasn't easy, he ultimately found deeper relationships, unexpected support, and a level of joy he never imagined possible. As he reflects, “All the fears… were not nearly as big as you thought.” Sound Bites“I prayed harder to not be gay than I've ever prayed for anything else.”“I spent years making myself smaller and smaller… until I became just a shadow of me.”“The biggest thing I gained after coming out? Me.”“All the fears were real—but they were never as big as I thought.”“I thought I was committed to marriage. Today, I'm committed to Peter.”“Everything got better. Everything."“What people loved was the person I was pretending to be.” “I didn't choose to be gay. I chose to be myself.” “I couldn't keep that box on the shelf anymore.”“I almost feel guilty about how happy I am.” “You're okay. You don't have to apologize for who you are.”Podcast website and resources: https://www.OutLateWithDavid.com YouTube Edition: https://youtu.be/loV6nfT9xYs YouTube Channel:   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvsthP9yClKI4o5LxbuQnOg Certified Professional Life Coach, David Cotton:  https://www.DavidCottonCoaching.com Contact me:  mailto:david@davidcottoncoaching.comhttps://www.DavidCottonCoaching.com https://www.OutLateWithDavid.com https://linktr.ee/davidacotton© 2026 David Cotton Coaching, LLC. In Episode 525 of Fishing Without Bait, Jim Ellermeyer welcomes Vic Costik for Part 1 of a conversation about community, authenticity, connection, and finding the courage to become more fully yourself. Vic is a designer, community advocate, and the creator of New Rust, a podcast exploring Pittsburgh's transformation through the individual stories of people doing interesting things throughout the city. Growing up surrounded by the enormous crowds of New York City, Vic expected proximity to people to create connection. Instead, it was moving to Pittsburgh that showed him what community could truly feel like. Vic talks with Jim about discovering Pittsburgh's LGBTQ community, building a found family, participating in the city's creative and wonderfully unusual spaces, and realizing how helping others can create a support network in return. From jam nights and local zines to simply meeting people doing something they care about, Vic explains why Pittsburgh's smaller communities became so important to him. The conversation also explores judgment, curiosity, and what can happen when we approach unfamiliar experiences with a willingness to listen instead of immediately forming conclusions. Vic shares stories of talking with coworkers who had little or no previous experience with transgender people and choosing conversation as an opportunity to create understanding. Vic also reflects candidly on his own journey toward authenticity. He discusses growing up without the language to understand what he was experiencing, repressing parts of himself, getting married to his high school sweetheart, and eventually recognizing that the life he was living did not feel like his own. As Vic puts it, transitioning allowed him to “meet myself for the 1st time.” What followed was more than a change in identity. Vic discovered a version of himself who loves being around people, participating in his community, sharing ideas, and embracing the wonderfully weird interests that make each person unique. This is Part 1 of our conversation with Vic Costik. The conversation continues in the next episode of Fishing Without Bait. Learn more about Vic's New Rust podcast at NewRustPodcast.com. Every one of us carries a deeper story beneath the surface—one that words often fail to express. In this episode of The Lucas Mack Show, Lucas sits down with longtime friend and visionary artist Sophia Noemi for an intimate conversation about creativity, healing, identity, and the mysterious ways our souls communicate through dreams, symbols, and imagination. Sophia shares how she discovered her extraordinary gift of translating subconscious imagery into powerful works of art, including the story behind the painting she created from one of Lucas's recurring visions of a wolf. Together they explore why creativity is far more than self-expression—it can become a pathway to healing, transformation, and remembering who we truly are. The conversation also dives into Sophia's remarkable professional journey, from teaching paint-and-sip classes to creating large-scale historical murals, while navigating grief, personal loss, and seasons of creative uncertainty. Through it all, she reveals how journaling, protecting her energy, and staying aligned with her calling helped her reclaim both her identity and her purpose. If you've ever felt disconnected from your creativity, struggled through difficult seasons, or sensed there was something deeper trying to emerge from within you, this conversation will inspire you to trust the process and create from the truth of who you are. How do you parent a neurodivergent family without constantly feeling like you're failing? You create your own supportive network. One therapist wasn't content with simply curating reviews of sensory-friendly playgroups and neighborhood events. Instead, she sought out somatic knowledge and a heart-centered way of being. What she found was a trauma-informed modality and a community of like-minded practitioners. That discovery liberated her from shame and guided her to a more compassionate way of parenting her neurodivergent children. On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth chats with Amanda Losch, LSCW, a NARM® Master Therapist based outside Chicago who specializes in developmental trauma. Their deeply personal conversation moves beyond clinical theory into the relational, emotional, and somatic realities of parenting while neurodivergent, married to a neurodivergent partner, and raising neurodivergent kids. Transforming Trauma is grateful to Amanda for her candor regarding the realities of neurodivergent parenting. Welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks—the show where we dive deep into the healing power of music, especially when life's lows feel impossible to bear. I'm your host, James Cox, a lifelong music lover who's turned personal struggles with depression into a mission to help others find the same refuge I found in melody. In today's episode we sit down with a true renaissance man of the modern country scene—Dave McElroy. Dave's story reads like a novel: a businessman turned songwriter, television host, outdoorsman, and bandleader whose faith has repeatedly nudged him into unknown territory. From his early mornings in a coffee‑scented army truck listening to Loretta Lynn, to a second‑grade awe of Louis Armstrong, through a teenage fascination with Stevie Wonder, Van Halen, reggae beats, and even the occasional metal riff, Dave's influences are as diverse as his life experiences. We'll hear how those eclectic roots shape his sound—country at heart, yet tinged with rock, R&B, and a subtle Tom Petty slide‑guitar vibe that surfaces on his single “Vibin'.” We'll explore his journey from a top‑40 breakout, through the challenges of releasing singles versus a full‑length album, to the heartbreaking loss of his beloved drummer Jared and the very real conversations about mental health that now drive his podcast's purpose.Dave also shares the humble moments that keep him grounded: hunting trips in the Midwest, the smell of fresh‑mowed grass that whisks him back to childhood, and his abiding belief that music is a lifeline—“the breathing” that carries us through the darkest days. Along the way we'll touch on his “king of country” debates, his love for legends like Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, and George Jones, and his relentless commitment to using his platform for charity, family, and faith.Stick around for the lightning round, where Dave reveals his first memorized country lyric, the instrument that challenged him the most, and the song he wishes he'd written himself. All of this—plus a sneak peek at an upcoming album slated for release this spring—makes for a heartfelt, candid conversation that underscores why, no matter the genre, music still speaks when words fall silent.Grab your headphones, sip a coffee (or a cold beer), and join us as we explore the man behind the music and the melodies that keep us moving forward.
