In this deeply moving — and one of our all-time favorite — conversations, we take a beautiful, funny, honest dive inside the “wonderful, dangerous” mind of Tracee Ellis Ross. As the world asks us to stay engaged without burning out, Tracee offers a powerful model for how to show up fully without losing yourself. This conversation is about love — not just romantic love, but the kind that changes everything: choosing yourself, holding fast to joy, building deep connection, and being in charge of your own life. Tracee reflects on approaching 50 and what it means to step into a new decade rooted in freedom, depth, and aliveness — not hustle. She shares the unforgettable story of her 50th birthday, standing in her mother's dress, surrounded by her cauldron people, and singing, “I'm 50 and I'm free.” A true lighthouse moment for all of us learning how to stay whole while we show up. -Tracee's go-to tools for quieting self-doubt and staying tethered to her truest self-How she made peace with not being everyone's cup of tea-The story behind becoming “Fifty and Free” in her mother's dress-Why she rejected the lie that women exist to be chosen-How to find your cauldron people — the ones who hold your fire About Tracee: Tracee Ellis Ross is an award-winning actress and producer best known for her roles in ABC's award-winning comedy series BLACK-ISH and GIRLFRIENDS. In Day 134 (p. 753, final section of the Gate of Flattery), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe concludes the chapter with practical safeguards against Chanufah (flattery). To escape its snare, one must flee honor (Kavod) entirely—those unconcerned with status never need to flatter for gain. Avoid deriving benefit from others, as most flattery stems from expecting reciprocity (e.g., fake compliments for favors, business, or social access). Rabbi Wolbe shares his personal rejection of a book teaching manipulative "networking" flattery, emphasizing genuine relationships over disingenuous gain.Flattery corrupts mitzvot (e.g., leading services for praise instead of L'shem Shamayim) and risks spiritual downfall through negative environments. One must intentionally surround oneself with the righteous and wise (Proverbs: "He who walks with wise men will be wise"), distancing from sinners, mockers, or corrupt cultures—even if it means solitude, caves, or desert isolation (as in Lamentations). In our generation of pervasive media, apps, social influence, and celebrity values (e.g., Golden Globes), be deliberate: delete harmful apps, limit exposure, choose uplifting company, and protect children from bad influences. The chapter's core lesson: intentionality in Avodat Hashem—curate environments for growth, reject flattery's traps, and prioritize purity over benefit._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on January 12, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on March 16, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Share your questions at aw@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content.  _____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life.  To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback, please email: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Our Mission is Connecting Jews & Judaism. The Disagreement
Oz the Mentalist & The Ethics of Deception

    The Disagreement

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2026 70:41

This week's disagreement is on Oz The Mentalist and the Ethics of Deception. This episode is about magic and mentalism, but, more than that, it's about the nature of how we form beliefs, determine what is real, what is true, and the social consequences of mass deception. First off: who is Oz the Mentalist? He's the guy you've probably seen in your social media feed, appearing to read the minds of celebrities. He's performed live at the Golden Globes and appeared on Howard Stern, The View, and 60 Minutes. He's the guy who guesses the name of a celebrity's high school crush or their third-grade teacher. Oz doesn't claim to be psychic. His tagline is: “I don't read minds, I read people.” He says he has extraordinary powers of perception. On Joe Rogan's podcast, he compared himself to Jason Bourne—someone who can read micro-expressions, facial tics, and eye movements to uncover whatever is inside your head. That's what separates mentalism from traditional magic. In magic, everyone knows a trick is happening. With mentalism, performers distance themselves from magic entirely. Oz constantly says he doesn't do magic tricks. Instead, he says he uses real psychological tools to access people's thoughts. He's turned those alleged abilities into a self-help empire, with a viral TED Talk titled “How to Read Minds Without Magic” and a New York Times bestselling book, Read Your Mind. I became fascinated with Oz a few months ago. My son is obsessed with magic, so we started watching his videos together and trying to figure out how the tricks worked. And honestly, I was pretty confused. None of the explanations we came up with made much sense. Then I came across a video from an Australian law student named Stevie Baskin, who came out of nowhere and started posting a five-hour viral video debunking Oz and mentalism. So how does a mentalist guess the name of your third-grade teacher? What kind of intense training lets someone peer inside your head and know exactly what you're thinking? It turns out the answer is a lot more straightforward than you might think—and I'm sharing it because it's important context for this conversation. Mentalists use a range of techniques, but one of the most common is something called pre-show. Before the show even begins, the mentalist and the guest agree on the question that will be asked later during the performance. The guest writes down the answer in a notepad. The mentalist might say something like, “Tear it off and put it in your pocket so you can't change your answer when we're live.” But it's not a normal notepad. It's a special one that secretly records the writing on the sheet underneath. When the guest hands the pad back, the mentalist already knows the answer—before the show even starts. From there, the rest is just acting. There are other variations of this too, involving special cell phone apps or surreptitiously designed websites. It kind of bothered me when I learned that. With the TED Talk and the New York Times bestseller, it felt like Oz had moved beyond entertainment and into something closer to misinformation—and monetizing it. Stevie Baskin agreed to come on the show to discuss the ethics of all of this. And to represent the other side, I wanted someone who actually practices mentalism. So I'm very grateful to mentalist, The Amazing Dr. Scott, for joining us. When not performing mentalism, Dr. Scott AKA Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman is a renowned cognitive scientist and professor at Columbia University. The Guests Steve Baskin is a skeptic, rationalist, and YouTube sensation who is in the midst of earning a law degree. Stevie crafted a five-hour YouTube video critiquing metadeceptions and articulating way mentalists like Oz Pearlman present create moral hazards for everyone. Stevie's video, Metadception: The Truth About Oz Pearlmen has close to 200k views and has created a stir amongst both fans and critics of mentalism, and the greater mentalist community.  Dr. Scott Barry Kauffman is a psychologist, coach, best-selling author, professor, keynote speaker, and mentalist. Dr. Kaufman is a professor of psychology at Columbia University and director of the Center for Human Potential, and is among the top 1% most cited scientists in the world for his research on intelligence and creativity. Dr. Kaufman's writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Scientific American, Psychology Today, and Harvard Business Review, and he is the author and editor of 11 books, including his most recent book Rise Above: Overcome a Victim Mindset, Empower Yourself, and Realize Your Full Potential. What if a horror film could teach us something about faith? In Sinners, music becomes a spiritual force that’s powerful enough to bring people together, challenge oppression, and even pierce the veil between life and death. In this episode of Reel Theology: Where Film Meets Faith, Rev. Brittany and Rev. Trudy explore the film Sinners and uncover the powerful spiritual questions hidden beneath its supernatural story. It’s a haunting movie that weaves together music, history, theology, and horror into an unforgettable masterpiece. Set in 1930s Mississippi, the film navigates faith, family expectations, and the cultural power of music in a deeply segregated society. What begins as a story about a juke joint and blues music soon unfolds into a layered reflection on temptation, survival, oppression, and spiritual power. It’s a vampire film, but it’s also about so much more: ancestral memory, cultural resilience, and the sacred power of music. In this conversation, the female pastors explore themes like: The relationship between music and spirituality Why religious institutions sometimes fear artistic expression African American spiritual traditions and Hoodoo The history of Black music as resistance and survival Theological ideas like temptation, evil, and process theology How oppression shapes community, identity, and belonging Ultimately, the film points toward a powerful truth echoed in Christian faith: Even in the presence of evil, racism, and death — nothing can separate us from the love of God. Watch the conversation and join us as we ask: What can a supernatural film teach us about faith? Want to connect with others about this discussion? Join our Patreon community online! Sinners has been nominated for a record-breaking 16 Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screen Play, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Achievement in Casting Sinners also received nominations for: BAFTA Awards, Critics’ Choice Movies Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Grammy Awards, and SAG Awards. A Note About Awards: While widely praised by critics for its storytelling, cinematography, and cultural depth, Sinners has also sparked conversation about which films receive major awards recognition and why.

Jessie Buckley is nominated for best actress at the Oscars this weekend, for her performance in the movie “Hamnet.” She plays the wife of William Shakespeare — and a grieving mother — as the couple confronts the loss of their only son. The role has already won her a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and an Actor Award. In a conversation on “The Sunday Daily,” The Times's chief movie critic, Manohla Dargis, said it would be a major upset if Buckley did not also win an Academy Award. Ahead of the ceremony, we're bringing you our conversation with Buckley from last year. “When I was filming ‘Hamnet,' I deeply wanted to become a mother,” Buckley said. “And it was such a gift to move through this woman and her motherhood and her love and her loss before I became a mother myself.” On this episode of “Modern Love,” Buckley describes how she was able to access the vulnerability she portrayed onscreen. And she talks about how her life has changed since having her own child. Plus, she reads the Modern Love essay “The Wrong Kind of Inheritance” by Victoria Dougherty. Having just won variations of best leading lady at the Critics Choice Awards, the SAG Actor Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Golden Globes, Buckley is on a roll. Earlier in the week, Buckley sat down with guest hosts Taylor Antrim and Marley Marius ahead of today's theatrical release of The Bride! In creating this retelling of the Bride of Frankenstein, Buckley spoke about the challenge of finding her character. “It was such a huge undertaking to really create three individual personalities and metabolize them and have them be in conversation with myself.” The film was also incredibly physical and required that she learn tap and gaga dancing for the role. Buckley had worked previously with Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Lost Daughter, who she described as one of the most important women in her life. “Maggie has a real vision and there's so much intention behind what she's trying to say with her stories and why she's choosing to tell a story at all,” Buckley told The Run-Through, “I think what she asks all of her actors and herself is to ask the question that's gonna challenge you.”With her daughter on the road with her for this press tour, Buckley toggles quickly between “changing a nappy” and putting a red carpet dress on. The combination of being thrust into the spotlight and being a new mother has changed her relationship with fashion. Now working with stylist to the stars Danielle Goldberg, she feels empowered to let herself feel seen in her changing body. “Right at the beginning she was like, I just wanna see you. And I felt like I could breathe for the first time.” Also on the episode, The Run-Through gets an exclusive behind-the-scenes pass at the Rick Owens and Isabel Marant shows. Between getting their makeup done and getting their clothes on, Alex Consani and Mona Touggard chat about how they make time to read despite the chaos that happens backstage. Plus, Rick Owens himself reveals the inspiration by his collection. The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. This week, the boys grabbed some beers and kept it positive while they fired off some mini-reviews before featuring a conversation about “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. As part of the random year generator series, 2004 was a great year for movies, with over 50 $100m movies and many likable ones. While “Eternal Sunshine” didn't gross in the top 70, it may be the year's greatest film. Props to Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman for giving Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet some juicy roles and incredibly shifty worlds! As for the mini-reviews, the boys can't speak highly enough of Gore Verbinski's “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die”, starring Sam Rockwell, and the intense and captivating “If I Had Legs I'd Kick You”, and the Academy Award-nominated “It Was Just An Accident”. After years of thinking love wasn't in the cards, Golden Globe, Emmy and Academy Award winning actor Halle Berry stopped chasing and that's exactly when everything changed. In this live conversation from Eudemonia, Halle and I get into what it really takes to have a loving connection and  incredible sex in your 50s, why she thought her partner gave her herpes (spoiler: it was perimenopause), and how becoming whole on her own finally attracted the relationship she'd always wanted. From faking multiple orgasms in her 20s to now having no problem telling her partner exactly what she needs, Halle shares why the "zero fucks to give" era might just be the sexiest time of a woman's life. She also opens up about misdiagnosis, advocating for women's health in Washington, and why she's throwing herself a "siesta" party when she officially hits menopause in March. Don't forget to watch the full video podcast on YouTube!  In this episode, you'll learn:  • Why chasing a relationship kept Halle attracting the wrong partners—and what shifted when she finally prioritized herself  • How vaginal dryness got misdiagnosed as herpes and Sjögren's disease, and what that taught her about the gaps in women's healthcare  • The permission slip every woman needs to stop performing in bed and start asking for what actually feels good More Halle Berry: • Instagram  • Respin by Halle Berry  Eudēmonia Summit: •  Website  More Dr. Emily:  • Shop With Emily! All I Want for Christmas, Hocus Pocus, Monkey Trouble, Now and Then — they all played on repeat in my home. From there, I followed her to the roles that earned her significant industry acclaim, a BAFTA nomination for American Beauty and a Golden Globe nomination for Ghost World.Since then, Birch has appeared on The Walking Dead and Mayfair Witches, made her directorial debut with The Gabby Petito Story, and now continues to make bold career choices, joining Kristen Stewart's feature directorial debut, The Chronology of Water.Based on Lidia Yuknavitch's acclaimed memoir, the film follows Imogen Poots as Lidia, a young woman who finds escape from her abusive home thanks to competitive swimming. However, that safe haven is rocked when she runs head first into a dizzying string of loss, addiction, and self-destructive choices before finding healing via her sister (played by Birch) and also through writing. With The Chronology of Water gearing up for its nationwide release, Birch visited the Collider Ladies Night studio to discuss her journey in film and television, beginning with early formative experiences on sets like Hocus Pocus and Patriot Games.
