In this episode, Justin and Abi explore how emotional health, once rooted in compassion, can begin to mirror the rigid structures of religion. They unpack how judgment, superiority, and performative belonging often hijack tools meant for connection and healing. With honesty and humor, they reflect on how emotional health can lead us toward love and humility, yet sometimes becomes a weapon of shame and exclusion. Through personal stories and cultural insight, they invite listeners to ask: Am I using emotional tools to connect, or to separate? This conversation is a call back to compassion, nuance, and the kind of boundaries that don't require someone else to be “bad” for us to feel safe. E1005 Uniformed and Undiagnosed: High-Functioning Mental Health Struggles in First Responders

This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, takes a candid look at the hidden mental health battles many first responders fight (Amazon Affiliate) while appearing perfectly fine on the outside. The discipline, structure, and professionalism that make them effective in the field often double as masks—concealing anxiety, depression, trauma, or burnout from colleagues, family, and even themselves. Defining “High-Functioning” Struggles: How success and competence can hide serious internal distress. The difference between coping and truly healing. Why First Responders Mask Symptoms: Cultural pressure to appear unshakable. Fear of stigma, career repercussions, or losing trust. The Role of Routine in Concealment: How structure and discipline can maintain outward stability. Why routines can become a crutch instead of a lifeline. The Cumulative Toll of Silent Struggles: The long-term health risks of untreated anxiety, depression, or trauma. The emotional cost on family relationships and personal well-being. The Danger of Self-Deception: How “I'm fine” becomes a habit, even to oneself. Why high-functioning doesn't mean healthy functioning. Strategies to Recognize and Address the Issue: Normalize Conversations Around Mental Health: Peer leaders and supervisors openly sharing their own experiences. Look for Micro-Signs in Yourself and Others: Changes in sleep, irritability, withdrawal, or overworking. Encourage Early Check-Ins, Not Crisis Interventions: Making mental health maintenance as routine as physical training. Use Trusted, Confidential Resources: Peer support, vetted therapists, or off-the-record consultations. Reframe Help-Seeking as Tactical Strength: Position mental wellness as part of operational readiness. This episode is a reminder that a polished uniform and a strong performance in the field don't always mean someone is okay—and that the bravest thing a responder can do might be to take off the mask.

In this week's message from our Failure to Thrive series, Pastor Gary explores why so many of us struggle to live with the joy God intended for His children. Just as physical growth can stall when a child experiences “failure to thrive,” our spiritual growth can falter when we lack proper emotional health.Jesus said in John 16:24, “Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” The normal Christian life is meant to be one filled with joy, peace, and growth in the fruit of the Spirit. But what happens when sadness or discouragement becomes our constant state?Pastor Gary helps us see that God is daily inviting us into a life of joy—through simple moments, His creation, and His promises. Drawing on stories, Scripture, and even the playful “Di Da Day” dance of a child, we are reminded that joy is not something we stumble into but something we train for under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Or perhaps you wonder if humility and ambition can ever walk the same path? Humility is often mistaken for invisibility in a world that values noise, boldness and assertion. Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking!Ministry can stir up all kinds of feelings, especially when we're dealing with conflict, with grief, with change. And the better we understand what's happening beneath the surface, the better we can lead ourselves—and our people—more thoughtfully and more effectively. In this episode, I'm speaking with Dr. Audrey Davidheiser, a licensed psychologist and the author of Grieving Wholeheartedly. Audrey helps us understand something called Internal Family Systems—IFS—a powerful way of thinking about our inner world and all those “parts” of us that can get in the way of effective leadership.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Audrey Davidheiser explains what drew her to Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.Internal Family Systems is a psychological model that views people as having multiple internal "parts."Parts of yourself often express themselves in day-to-day decisions, sometimes even in conflict with each other.Markus Watson clarifies that having "parts" is different from dissociative identity disorder or multiple personalities.Audrey Davidheiser explains the difference between parts in IFS and the rigid, unaware system found in Dissociative Identity Disorder.Internal Family Systems builds on the foundation of family systems theory, adapting it to the internal world.Inside everyone are parts that take on different roles, often formed in response to significant experiences, such as trauma or relational wounds.Markus Watson illustrates the concept with the example of feeling different internal responses to everyday situations like going to a late-night movie.Every person has both helpful and challenging internal parts, such as critics, achievers, or comfort-seekers, and these parts influence behavior.Audrey Davidheiser introduces three types of parts in IFS: exiles (hurt parts), managers (protective parts), and firefighters (distracting/soothing parts).Parts are not inherently bad; even when their actions are destructive, they are typically trying to protect us or relieve pain.Markus Watson inquires about the relationship between sin and IFS, prompting Audrey Davidheiser to articulate how parts can miss the mark despite good intentions.Pastors can benefit from understanding their own internal parts, especially when reacting to challenging questions or situations in ministry.Audrey Davidheiser suggests the practice of being "unblended"—letting the true Self, rather than an emotional part, lead when responding to others.Leaders who operate from their "Self" (instead of from a part) can foster healthier responses and guide their communities through change with greater empathy and wisdom.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Audrey DavidheiserAim For Breakthrough websiteBooks mentioned:Grieving Wholeheartedly, by Audrey DavidheiserRelated Episodes:262: From Fired to Flourishing, with Chuck DeGroat254: Endless Expectations and Emotional ExhaustionGet Becoming Leaders of Shalom for free HERE.Click HERE to get my FREE online course, BECOMING LEADERS OF SHALOM.

We unpack the emotional labor your loved ones carry—often silently—and how to acknowledge, support, and protect them without losing yourself to the demands of the badge. Understanding Secondary Service: How spouses and kids are impacted by missed holidays, unpredictable schedules, and constant worry. The way this secondary service can shape identity and family dynamics. The Emotional Toll on Loved Ones: Recognizing signs of stress, anxiety, or resentment in your spouse and children. Why unspoken worries can be just as heavy as the dangers of the job itself. Invisible Shifts at Home: How partners often shoulder the household and parenting duties alone during your shifts. The mental exhaustion of “covering” for an absent parent or spouse. The Role of Unpredictability: How canceled plans, late calls, and changing shifts affect trust and emotional connection. Why communication about unpredictability matters more than you think. The Silent Strength of Support Systems: How family members adapt to crisis without formal training. The toll of always being “on call” emotionally, even when you're not home. Strategies to Help Protect Your Family's Peace: Intentional Communication: Create a safe space for your spouse and kids to express frustrations without fear of judgment. Scheduled Family Time: Make non-negotiable dates on the calendar that aren't easily sacrificed to work. Acknowledgement and Gratitude: Verbally recognize the sacrifices your loved ones make—and do it often. Healthy Decompression Habits: Process your job stress before walking through the front door to avoid emotional spillover. Shared Resources and Support: Connect your family with counseling, peer support groups, or other first responder families for understanding and solidarity. Your family may not wear the uniform, but they carry its weight alongside you. In this episode, you'll learn how to ensure their service doesn't come at the expense of their well-being—or yours.

Send us a textThe story of the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well is familiar to many, but what if everything we thought we knew about her was filtered through centuries of misinterpretation? Dr. Caryn Reeder joins us for a paradigm-shifting conversation that challenges traditional views of this remarkable biblical figure. For generations, sermons have painted the Samaritan woman as a sexual sinner—a prostitute, a fallen woman. Yet as Dr. Reeder points out, the text of John 4 never once mentions sin or forgiveness. This deliberate sexualization and minimization of her story has had far-reaching consequences, contributing to the silencing of women's voices in Christian communities. What emerges instead is the portrait of a theological intellectual who engages Jesus in the longest recorded conversation in the Gospel of John. Unlike Nicodemus—the powerful, educated man who meets Jesus in darkness and leaves confused—this nameless Samaritan woman meets Jesus in broad daylight and demonstrates remarkable spiritual insight. She becomes what Dr. Reeder calls a "paragon"—a touchstone against which discipleship should be measured. The contrast couldn't be more striking: a marginalized woman becomes the first evangelist while the religious elite remain in darkness. This reversal challenges everything we think we know about spiritual authority and who God chooses to work through. When understood in its historical context, the Samaritan woman's marital history reflects the harsh realities that women faced in the ancient world, rather than a moral failure. This conversation invites us to reconsider how we read scripture and how we value voices in our communities. What might happen if we recognized the theological contributions of those we've overlooked? How might our understanding of leadership transform if we truly saw this woman as Jesus saw her?Learn more about Dr. Reeder's work: Westmont Order Caryn's book: The Samaritan Woman's StorySupport the showBegin Your Heartlifter's Journey: Visit and subscribe to Heartlift Central on Substack. Spiritual Life and Leadership

Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking!Bias isn't always about the big, obvious issues. Sometimes it shows up in the subtle, everyday moments—like who we compliment, who we listen to, and how we respond to change. It's part of being human, but as leaders, it's our calling to become aware of those biases so we can lead with greater humility and clarity. In this episode, Erin Devers, author of The Unbiased Self, shares the science behind bias, why it's so hard to see in ourselves, and how anchoring our identity in Christ creates the freedom to lead—and live—in a much healthier and more effective way.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Bias is anything that prevents people from seeing reality accurately, not just issues of race or gender.Erin Devers describes a "cute" experiment where giving compliments—even insincerely—boosts happiness for both giver and receiver.People underestimate how enjoyable giving and receiving compliments will be, which shows a bias against social engagement.Erin Devers highlights that everyone has biases, and recognizing them is foundational to personal and spiritual growth.People have a "bias blind spot," making it much easier to see others' biases than their own.Erin Devers emphasizes Jesus' teaching about removing the plank from one's own eye as a reference to addressing personal bias.Self-esteem plays a major role in bias, as people spin stories to feel good about themselves, sometimes at the expense of accuracy.Attempts to feel right and to feel good about oneself are two core sources of bias in human thinking.Markus Watson connects the discussion to everyday church life, pointing out how bias impacts how pastors perceive congregants.Erin Devers explains that a secure identity as a child of God and sinner saved by grace allows Christians to pursue accuracy rather than always needing to be right.Rooting identity in something secure—whether faith-based or intrinsic human value—helps people approach disagreement with less defensiveness.Broadening perspective, such as considering larger life questions or relational values, helps reduce bias in emotionally charged situations.Erin Devers discusses the difference between fast thinking (quick, automatic judgments) and slow thinking (deliberate, reflective thought) and how both relate to bias.Habit formation and intentional practices like reducing social media can create space for deeper connection, reflection, and less biased engagement within communities.Markus Watson addresses how pastors identify which congregants will support or resist change, revealing how bias shapes leadership decisions.Erin Devers encourages church leaders to acknowledge the collective bias toward doing what is easiest when leading change, while grounding stability in God's presence.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Erin Devers, Indiana Wesleyan UniversityBooks mentioned:The Unbiased Self, by Erin DeversRelated episodes:252. Summary In this episode, Ali Damron discusses the interplay between stress, hormonal fluctuations, and emotional symptoms experienced during the menstrual cycle. She emphasizes that many women face challenges related to PMS, PMDD, and other mood disorders, particularly in their 30s and 40s. Ali explores how stress and the nervous system can amplify these symptoms, and she provides insights into hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding both hormonal and psychological factors in managing menstrual health and offers practical solutions for women seeking to improve their well-being. Takeaways Stress in the nervous system amplifies emotional symptoms during the menstrual cycle. Many women experience heightened emotional volatility and anxiety related to their cycle. Hormonal fluctuations are a natural part of the menstrual cycle, but not all women experience the same symptoms. Stress hormones can exacerbate mood symptoms, particularly during the luteal phase. Understanding the interplay between hormones and the nervous system is crucial for managing symptoms. Support for progesterone can help alleviate mood symptoms in women. Gut health and detoxification play a significant role in hormonal balance. Monitoring symptoms too closely can increase anxiety and hypervigilance. A holistic approach to hormonal health includes nutrition, sleep, and stress management. Women are not alone in their struggles with menstrual health; these issues are common and manageable.   Chapters 00:00 Understanding Menstrual Cycle Challenges 04:58 Hormonal Fluctuations and Their Impact 10:02 The Role of Stress in Hormonal Imbalance 14:44 Navigating the Complexities of Hormonal Health 24:41 Integrating Solutions for Better Well-being   Ali's Resources:  Calm the Chaos: Practical Tips and Tools for Stopping Anxiety in It's Tracks Course!
