Acts 13.5 NLT 'There, in the town of Salamis, they went to the Jewish synagogues and preached the word of God. John Mark went with them as their assistant.' This is the start of the first missionary journey. It was an incredibly important moment for the Christian gospel and it started on the island of Cyprus. Saul (who suddenly becomes known as Paul) was happy to preach about Jesus anywhere, but it was his usual custom to start in the synagogue and work out from there. I find it fascinating that on this most sensitive of missions he and Barnabas took young John Mark with them. We have already met John Mark in the previous chapter. He was clearly well known to Paul and Barnabas, but it was a major initiative to take him on this strategically important missionary journey. You can think of many reasons why it might not be wise to take a young and inexperienced person on such a crucial mission. But they were convinced that his presence was important. It's impossible to know exactly why they took him, but it is always wise to ensure that young people are being trained up for ministry. I once worked with a very gifted youth minister who was convinced that it was vital to give significant leadership responsibilities to young people by the age of 15, in order to help them to grow. It was wise thinking and I saw many young people grow into mature leaders by their late teens because they had been given the experience of leadership. I am grateful for those leadership teams on which I have served where there has been a conscious desire to ensure that there is at least one younger person on the group. I can think of some who have been recruited who looked very much out of their depth when they joined but because they were trusted and encouraged, they quickly grew into effective leaders. Paul and Barnabas' example should give us the encouragement to do the same today. From a human point of view they were taking a risk, but they gladly took it for the good of the church and how grateful we should be that they did so. The confidence that they placed in him might well have been the reason why he later became the author of Mark's Gospel. QUESTION: Does your church encourage younger people in this way? PRAYER: Lord God, help us to encourage young people to grow in the use of their gifts. Amen

He then got into the cannabis industry working in a lab at one of the top cannabis extraction companies. While working in the lab, he started to research CBD and the studies on CBD and other cannabinoids. He realized that CBD works wonders but only in effective doses. While researching CBD brands to use, he found that no brands offered the doses needed at an affordable cost. This led him to create Santa Cruz Medicinals to provide a high-quality, direct to consumer solution for CBD. After founding Santa Cruz Medicinals he is taking the same business principles of high quality products and an ingredient first mentality into Santa Cruz Paleo to provide amazing keto and paleo snacks, functional foods, and supplements. Episode 6 - The Big Mistake People Make about the ChurchWe overweight the bad news and we underweight the good news. We may be a lot better than we think! Love is the litmus test of an authentic relationship with God.1st Question: Does this mean that it doesn’t matter what you believe or how you live as long as you are a loving person? No. John assumes that his readers are believers already.2nd Question: How do you explain: the world is filled with loving people who have no connection to God through Jesus Christ? Yes, but all of us were created “in his image.” Every human being still carries some vestige of that original image. The attributes of God are residual in all of us.3rd Question: How do you explain: there are professing Christians who are not loving people? Many are Christians in name only. They are posing as Christians so they are imposters who give the church a bad reputation. Many who are true Christians start out with serious character deficits. Various factors mean some people are not naturally loving. Everyone has a different starting point. C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity Miss Bates example. So, the question is, “Am I a better person than I would have been had I never met Christ?” All true Christians are still imperfect. “Please be patient, God isn’t finished with me yet.” We are not finished products. The church was never meant to be a museum for saints, but a hospital for sinners.4th Question: What does the report card of the church really look like? The big problem with the conclusions that are drawn from the often dismal public record of churches is that we don’t have the big picture. Will Durant: “Civilization is a stream with banks. The stream is sometimes filled with blood from people…doing the things historians…record, while on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children…The story of civilization is the story of what happened on the banks. Historians…ignore the banks for the river.” To reject the church because of the history books and headlines is to ignore the banks for the river. There are countless acts of kindness which never make the headlines or history books. But I suspect…the cumulative value of such deeds completely dwarfs the darker side of more public church life. The banks, tell a different story than the river. Our big mistake about the church is that we overweight the bad news and underweight the good. Three examples: The Stephen Ministry…University of Pennsylvania study on the economic impact of churches…the impact of the Great Awakening. “there is almost no humanitarian institution in our society which doesn’t not have its roots in this movement and the message of Jesus.”5th Question: What does MY report card look like? Is my own life a part of the good news? Love is the litmus test. Are we better today than yesterday?Ten questions:1. I regularly look for opportunities to serve others.2. I am a generous and cheerful giver of my money, time and other resources.3. I am patient with others when interrupted or inconvenienced.4. I do not “keep score” when it comes to personal offenses, but I readily forgive others.5. I do not insist on my own way but defer to others whenever possible.6. I am a patient listener - I give other people the opportunity to talk.7. I use my words to encourage rather than to criticize.8. I honor all people regardless of different backgrounds, opinions or ethnicities.9. I do not gossip or find entertainment value in the failings of others.10. I genuinely rejoice when I hear about the success of others.God loves us just the way we are, but He loves us too much to leave us the way we are. We are each more than what we have become.

Do you ever get asked why are you breathing like that during an exercise? Or worse yet, maybe you've gotten in ANOTHER Facebook argument with some trainer or clinician who is skeptical of breathing. Despite typing feverishly, throwing all caps on that comment, everything you can, no luck. Ask me to show you the evidence ONE MORE TIME! (Photo credit: Romolo Tavani) It's interesting to consider why some peeps think of breathing as this separate piece from movement. It's something esoteric, different. When in reality... Breathing affects pelvic floor dynamics, impacting how your hips move Breathing influences the intra-abdominal pressure needed to move heavy ass weights You upper body and cervical mobility can be impacted by breathing. Not sure if you know this, but uh, most of your upper quadrant muscles attach to the ribcage fam! Breathing isn't something fancy, but an integral piece of how we move and perform. If maximizing your movement quality sounds like something you want to learn how to do take advantage of breathing. To implement breathing into your training, you'll need to learn some biomechanics, apply airflow to your favorite lifts, and educate others so you can show them the way, the truth, and the light. Role of the diaphragm in trunk rotation in humans - So it turns out the diaphragm doesn't create a whole lot of motion at the spine, but it does drive some extension in those with spinal cord injuries. Action of the diaphragm on the rib cage - This article outlines how the lower ribcage movement occurs during inhalation and exhalation. Respiratory Action of the Intercostal Muscles - This article deep dives into how the intercostal muscles function. Bill Hartman - Arcs of flexion, breathing, this is my go-to guy for this. He taught me just about everything I know. He's my dad after all ;) Reaching: Theory and Practice - Want to learn how reaching at different angles influences shoulder motion? Then you'll definitely want to check this one out. I also talk about trunk rotation on this one. If you want to improve buckethandle dynamics like crazy, then you gotta try the rib shake pulldown. If you are wondering, my rib shake DOES bring all the boys to the yard! If you are wanting to beef up your evidence on all the things we talk about, check out my references page. Question: You describe inhalation as a general posterior expansion of the spine to accept the depressed abdominal contents, which causes a reduced lumbar lordosis among other things. However, I've read that inhalation as causing increased lumbar lordosis due to the diaphragmatic attachments to the anterior spine. The latter makes sense to me given the importance of the exhalation in creating an ideal stack, but the concepts you have been describing very much do as well. It would be incredible if you could help me understand this, as I feel like this confusion confounds my ability to understand how the upper and lower parts of the ventral cavity are functionally linked. Thank you!! Watch the answer here. Answer: What if I told you both answers were right? :) Ugh, you are such a jerk Zac! The difference is between the respiratory AND postural function of the diaphragm. If you contract the diaphragm in isolation, the action on the lumbar spine is extension. However, isolated contraction is not what happens in respiration. Instead, many tissues contract to pull air into the lungs. In general, there is a multidirectional expansion of the ventral cavity during inhalation. As the diaphragm descends, the viscera downwardly displace, and the pelvic floor must eccentrically elongate to catch the viscera. Stretch to catch if you will (#stretch2catch, could be hashtag of the year). This is your ventral cavity on breath (Photo credit: Cruithne9) When this action happens, sacral counternutation occurs to increase the pelvic inlet surface area. Sacral counternutation and lumbar flexion are paired movements. Hence, why lumbar flexion is right. So then when would the diaphragm extend the lumbar spine? If the diaphragm descends to flat, a maximal concentric contraction, there will be increased postural demands on the diaphragm. This, combined with increased accessory breathing muscle activity will create lumbar extension during inhalation. How does your thoracic spine move when you breathe? Question: Hey Zac, I have a question for you. I've been following what you teach and I know your breathing mechanisms but something has been bugging me! When we make an inhalation, our ribs rotate externally and this is related to spinal extension but when we inhale, our spine goes in kyphosis too. Is it possible that extension and kyphotisation happen at the same time? What am I missing here? Thanks a lot for your time. Watch the answer here. Answer: The big question to answer this question is "what in the heck are the intercostals doing in the ribcage?" I'M GLAD YOU ASKED!!!! Which intercostals are active during respiration are based on location and neural drive. Peep this study to learn more, but the two intercostal types that are active during inhalation are: Parasternal intercostals (those surrounding the sternum) Dorsal rostral intercostals (those surrounding the posterior upper 6 ribs Dorsal rostral on the left, parasternal on the right (Photo credit: Henry Gray & Anatomography) When these muscles contract, they will cause anterosuperior movement of the front ribs, and posterior superior movement of the upper back ribs. This would in theory cause "extension" in the lower thoracic region, and "flexion" in the upper thoracic region. But on the real, you'll see circumferential expansion of the ribcage in all directions when you breathe in. Realize though fam, it's a small amount during quiet breathing. The more volitional your breath gets, the more expansion you will see. How to breathe to address specific movement restrictions Question: Does how you coach breathing change based on if it is an exercise that is intended to influence an exhalation(ie. hip extension) or inhalation(i.e hip flexion) limitation? Watch the answer here. Answer: In general, the extremity mechanics paired with respiration are as follows: Inhalation: Flexion, abduction, and external rotation Exhalation: extension, adduction, and internal rotation When I say these are paired, if you drive flexion in the extremities, the spine will assume inhalation mechanics, and vice versa with extension. They help create the desired bias. If I want to reinforce a given bias, I can time my breathing to sequence these movements to maximize the effect. If we assume that someone can keep a stack during a movement (ha), we can throw a breath on top of that action to theoretically drive more desired motion. Don't do this at the expense of overwhelming your client with cues. Not cool, bruh. Breathing during upper body exercises Question: Hey Zac, I was wondering if you could do an episode regarding when to breathe to bias different expansion strategies for some upper body weight-room exercises: Pull-ups Chest supported rows Incline presses Alternating rows/presses 1 arm pull-downs Watch the answer here. Answer: This question totally depends on your arm position and when you breathe. Let's go into each of these. Pullups and Pulldowns A pullup can improve buckethandle dynamics for both infrasternal angles at the start. If you are wide and exhale, you'll close the lower ribs. If you can inhale with ab tension at the start, that's perfect for a narrow. As you progress towards the pullup bar, you'll get more pumphandle expansion. A word of movement restoration caution. If you are lifting HEAVY ASS WEIGHTS on these pullups, you will need to drive a lot of concentric force to move da weight. You'll likely not get the movement options you so desire (but who cares when you got that v-shaped torso amiright!??!) If you do these things unilaterally, like with 1 arm pulldowns, you can drive WAY greater buckethandle dynamics because of the allowable sidebend. Chest supported row Due to this movement being roughly at 90 degrees of shoulder flexion, you'll get mostly pump handle mechanics during the start, with an increase as you row. If you do this move unilaterally, then you can drive a bit of trunk rotation towards the straight arm. Incline presses Ah, my chest is warm just thinking about these. Mostly from the hella gainzzz. Lower inclines will bias more pump handle, increasing during the lower similarly to the chest supported row. As you up the incline grade though, prepare to get filthy. Higher inclines will drive more upper posterior thorax expansion (T2-T4) because of the eccentric orientation of the rhomboids. Educating skeptical professionals on breathing Question: Right now I´m diving into the whole breathing/biomechanics/movement information you provide. I live in Germany where nobody really knows shit about the stuff you talk about. A lot of people are very critical of the concepts I play around with. Do you have any advice on how to get clients & other coaches to come to the Light Side? Also, can you share some studies that can help me back up the stuff I´m talking about (especially pelvic movements during breathing/squatting/hinging, movement variability, effects of the 90/90 hip lift)? People always want to "see the evidence" so it would be nice to just stuff some studies down their throat so that I can keep on learning in peace. Also, I kinda wanna know that what you´re talking about is actually true ;) Keep doing what you´re doing! Lots of love from Germany! Watch the answer here. Answer: When you are going up against people who believe differently than you (read: haterz), you have to play this situation cool. I like to go straight up Socrates on dat azz. But if you drink the hemlock, youre going to have a bad time Here is your order of operation: Seek to understand their point and beliefs. Explain what they believe in a way they wish they would've. Who knows? They may actually change your mind! Find common principles. If you can find things you agree upon, they'll be more receptive to what you say. After you've successfully completed steps 1 & 2 (are you sure you did it??? DO IT AGAIN!), then, and only then, can you provide counterpoints to their argument. This could be providing research or asking them challenging questions that they'd have a hard time with. I also find it useful to ask someone "what is something you think I believe that you don't?" They could be misinterpreting what you are saying, then you can provide a more accurate representation. These conversations are best had in person, as you can better appreciate nuance then arguing in front of your computer monitor. Sum Up Normal inhalation causes a relative reduction of a lumbar curve due to sacral counternutation, but lumbar extension can increase with a maximal concentric diaphragmatic contraction In general, inhale if you are going after flexion, abduction, and external rotation restrictions; exhale if you moving into extension, adduction, and internal rotation restrictions If overhead, you can bias buckethandle mechanics and upper thorax expansion. The lower your arms go, the more lower thorax expansion occurs. When educating others who believe differently than you, seek to understand them first, find common principles, and then (AND ONLY THEN) respectfully challenge their thought process. How do YOU implement breathwork during training with you and your clients? Comment below and let the fam know!
In this week's episode, I talk about accountability and what that looks like. Using the Doja Cat situation as an example, I talk about how I feel people don't take time to analyze and look at a situation before jumping to conclusions. By no means am I making excuses for her, but it's somewhat of a different take. We are all accountable for our actions, but that doesn't mean we can't hold each other accountable too. That also doesn't mean we can't make mistakes and learn from them. Today’s Question: Does cancel culture actually hold people accountable? PAYCHECK PROTECTION PROGRAM LOANS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)The Small Business Administration (SBA), in consultation with the Department of the Treasury, intends to provide timely additional guidance to address borrower and lender questions concerning the implementation of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), established by section 1102 of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act or the Act). This document will be updated on a regular basis.Borrowers and lenders may rely on the guidance provided in this document as SBA’s interpretation of the CARES Act and of the Paycheck Protection Program Interim Final Rules (“PPP Interim Final Rules”) (link). The U.S. government will not challenge lender PPP actions that conform to this guidance,1 and to the PPP Interim Final Rules and any subsequent rulemaking in effect at the time.Question: Paragraph 3.b.iii of the PPP Interim Final Rule states that lenders must “[c]onfirm the dollar amount of average monthly payroll costs for the preceding calendar year by reviewing the payroll documentation submitted with the borrower’s application.” Does that require the lender to replicate every borrower’s calculations? Answer: No. Providing an accurate calculation of payroll costs is the responsibility of the borrower, and the borrower attests to the accuracy of those calculations on the Borrower Application Form. Lenders are expected to perform a good faith review, in a reasonable time, of the borrower’s calculations and supporting documents concerning average monthly payroll cost. For example, minimal review of calculations based on a payroll report by a recognized third-party payroll processor would be reasonable. In addition, as the PPP Interim Final Rule indicates, lenders may rely on borrower representations, including with respect to amounts required to be excluded from payroll costs. If the lender identifies errors in the borrower’s calculation or material lack of substantiation in the borrower’s supporting documents, the lender should work with the borrower to remedy the issue.2 Question: Are small business concerns (as defined in section 3 of the Small Business Act, 15 U.S.C. 632) required to have 500 or fewer employees to be eligible borrowers in the PPP? Answer: No. Small business concerns can be eligible borrowers even if they have more than 500 employees, as long as they satisfy the existing statutory and regulatory definition of a “small business concern” under section 3 of the Small Business Act, 15 U.S.C. 632. A business can qualify if it meets the SBA employee-based or revenue-As of May 3, 2020based size standard corresponding to its primary industry. Go to www.sba.gov/size for the industry size standards.Additionally, a business can qualify for the Paycheck Protection Program as a small business concern if it met both tests in SBA’s “alternative size standard” as of March 27, 2020: (1) maximum tangible net worth of the business is not more than $15 million; and (2) the average net income after Federal income taxes (excluding any carry-over losses) of the business for the two full fiscal years before the date of the application is not more than $5 million.A business that qualifies as a small business concern under section 3 of the Small Business Act, 15 U.S.C. 632, may truthfully attest to its eligibility for PPP loans on the Borrower Application Form, unless otherwise ineligible.Question: Does my business have to qualify as a small business concern (as defined in section 3 of the Small Business Act, 15 U.S.C. 632) in order to participate in the PPP? Answer: No. In addition to small business concerns, a business is eligible for a PPP loan if the business has 500 or fewer employees whose principal place of residence is in the United States, or the business meets the SBA employee-based size standards for the industry in which it operates (if applicable). Similarly, PPP loans are also available for qualifying tax-exempt nonprofit organizations described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC), tax-exempt veterans organization described in section 501(c)(19) of the IRC, and Tribal business concerns described in section 31(b)(2)(C) of the Small Business Act that have 500 or fewer employees whose principal place of residence is in the United States, or meet the SBA employee-based size standards for the industry in which they operate.Question: Are lenders required to make an independent determination regarding applicability of affiliation rules under 13 C.F.R. 121.301(f) to borrowers? Answer: No. It is the responsibility of the borrower to determine which entities (if any) are its affiliates and determine the employee headcount of the borrower and its affiliates. Lenders are permitted to rely on borrowers’ certifications.Question: Are borrowers required to apply SBA’s affiliation rules under 13 C.F.R. 121.301(f)? Answer: Yes. Borrowers must apply the affiliation rules set forth in SBA’s Interim Final Rule on Affiliation. A borrower must certify on the Borrower Application Form that the borrower is eligible to receive a PPP loan, and that certification means that the borrower is a small business concern as defined in section 3 of the Small Business Act (15 U.S.C. 632), meets the applicable SBA employee-based or revenue-based size standard, or meets the tests in SBA’s alternative size standard, after applying the affiliation rules, if applicable. SBA’s existing affiliation exclusions apply to the PPP, including, for example the exclusions under 13 CFR 121.103(b)(2).As of May 3, 2020Question: The affiliation rule based on ownership (13 C.F.R. 121.301(f)(1)) states that SBA will deem a minority shareholder in a business to control the business if the shareholder has the right to prevent a quorum or otherwise block action by the board of directors or shareholders. If a minority shareholder irrevocably gives up those rights, is it still considered to be an affiliate of the business? Answer: No. If a minority shareholder in a business irrevocably waives or relinquishes any existing rights specified in 13 C.F.R. 121.301(f)(1), the minority shareholder would no longer be an affiliate of the business (assuming no other relationship that triggers the affiliation rules).Question: The CARES Act excludes from the definition of payroll costs any employee compensation in excess of an annual salary of $100,000. Does that exclusion apply to all employee benefits of monetary value? Answer: No. The exclusion of compensation in excess of $100,000 annually applies only to cash compensation, not to non-cash benefits, including:employer contributions to defined-benefit or defined-contribution retirement plans;payment for the provision of employee benefits consisting of group health care coverage, including insurance premiums; andpayment of state and local taxes assessed on compensation of employees. Question: Do PPP loans cover paid sick leave? Answer: Yes. PPP loans covers payroll costs, including costs for employee vacation, parental, family, medical, and sick leave. However, the CARES Act excludes qualified sick and family leave wages for which a credit is allowed under sections 7001 and 7003 of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (Public Law 116–127). Learn more about the Paid Sick Leave Refundable Credit here.Question: My small business is a seasonal business whose activity increases from April to June. Considering activity from that period would be a more accurate reflection of my business’s operations. However, my small business was not fully ramped up on February 15, 2020. Am I still eligible? Answer: In evaluating a borrower’s eligibility, a lender may consider whether a seasonal borrower was in operation on February 15, 2020 or for an 8-week period between February 15, 2019 and June 30, 2019.Question: What if an eligible borrower contracts with a third-party payer such as a payroll provider or a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) to process payroll and report payroll taxes? Answer: SBA recognizes that eligible borrowers that use PEOs or similar payroll providers are required under some state registration laws to report wage and other data onAs of May 3, 2020the Employer Identification Number (EIN) of the PEO or other payroll provider. In these cases, payroll documentation provided by the payroll provider that indicates the amount of wages and payroll taxes reported to the IRS by the payroll provider for the borrower’s employees will be considered acceptable PPP loan payroll documentation. Relevant information from a Schedule R (Form 941), Allocation Schedule for Aggregate Form 941 Filers, attached to the PEO’s or other payroll provider’s Form 941, Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return, should be used if it is available; otherwise, the eligible borrower should obtain a statement from the payroll provider documenting the amount of wages and payroll taxes. In addition, employees of the eligible borrower will not be considered employees of the eligible borrower’s payroll provider or PEO.Question: May lenders accept signatures from a single individual who is authorized to sign on behalf of the borrower? Answer: Yes. However, the borrower should bear in mind that, as the Borrower Application Form indicates, only an authorized representative of the business seeking a loan may sign on behalf of the business. An individual’s signature as an “Authorized Representative of Applicant” is a representation to the lender and to the U.S. government that the signer is authorized to make the certifications, including with respect to the applicant and each owner of 20% or more of the applicant’s equity, contained in the Borrower Application Form. Lenders may rely on that representation and accept a single individual’s signature on that basis.Question: I need to request a loan to support my small business operations in light of current economic uncertainty. However, I pleaded guilty to a felony crime a very long time ago. Am I still eligible for the PPP? Answer: Yes. Businesses are only ineligible if an owner of 20 percent or more of the equity of the applicant is presently incarcerated, on probation, on parole; subject to an indictment, criminal information, arraignment, or other means by which formal criminal charges are brought in any jurisdiction; or, within the last five years, for any felony, has been convicted; pleaded guilty; pleaded nolo contendere; been placed on pretrial diversion; or been placed on any form of parole or probation (including probation before judgment).Question: Are lenders permitted to use their own online portals and an electronic form that they create to collect the same information and certifications as in the Borrower Application Form, in order to complete implementation of their online portals? Answer: Yes. Lenders may use their own online systems and a form they establish that asks for the same information (using the same language) as the Borrower Application Form. Lenders are still required to send the data to SBA using SBA’s interface.Question: What time period should borrowers use to determine their number of employees and payroll costs to calculate their maximum loan amounts? As of May 3, 2020Answer: In general, borrowers can calculate their aggregate payroll costs using data either from the previous 12 months or from calendar year 2019. For seasonal businesses, the applicant may use average monthly payroll for the period between February 15, 2019, or March 1, 2019, and June 30, 2019. An applicant that was not in business from February 15, 2019 to June 30, 2019 may use the average monthly payroll costs for the period January 1, 2020 through February 29, 2020.Borrowers may use their average employment over the same time periods to determine their number of employees, for the purposes of applying an employee-based size standard. Alternatively, borrowers may elect to use SBA’s usual calculation: the average number of employees per pay period in the 12 completed calendar months prior to the date of the loan application (or the average number of employees for each of the pay periods that the business has been operational, if it has not been operational for 12 months).Question: Should payments that an eligible borrower made to an independent contractor or sole proprietor be included in calculations of the eligible borrower’s payroll costs? Answer: No. Any amounts that an eligible borrower has paid to an independent contractor or sole proprietor should be excluded from the eligible business’s payroll costs. However, an independent contractor or sole proprietor will itself be eligible for a loan under the PPP, if it satisfies the applicable requirements.Question: How should a borrower account for federal taxes when determining its payroll costs for purposes of the maximum loan amount, allowable uses of a PPP loan, and the amount of a loan that may be forgiven? Answer: Under the Act, payroll costs are calculated on a gross basis without regard to (i.e., not including subtractions or additions based on) federal taxes imposed or withheld, such as the employee’s and employer’s share of Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) and income taxes required to be withheld from employees. As a result, payroll costs are not reduced by taxes imposed on an employee and required to be withheld by the employer, but payroll costs do not include the employer’s share of payroll tax. For example, an employee who earned $4,000 per month in gross wages, from which $500 in federal taxes was withheld, would count as $4,000 in payroll costs. The employee would receive $3,500, and $500 would be paid to the federal government. However, the employer-side federal payroll taxes imposed on the $4,000 in wages are excluded from payroll costs under the statute.33 The definition of “payroll costs” in the CARES Act, 15 U.S.C. 636(a)(36)(A)(viii), excludes “taxes imposed or withheld under chapters 21, 22, or 24 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 during the covered period,” defined as February 15, 2020, to June 30, 2020. As described above, the SBA interprets this statutory exclusion to mean that payroll costs are calculated on a gross basis, without subtracting federal taxes that are imposed on the employee or withheld from employee wages. Unlike employer-side payroll taxes, such employee-side taxes are ordinarily expressed as a reduction in employee take-home pay; their exclusion from the definition of payroll costs means payroll costs should not be reduced based on taxes imposed on the employee or withheld from employee wages. This interpretation is consistent with the text of the statute and advances the legislative purpose of ensuring workersAs of May 3, 2020remain paid and employed. Further, because the reference period for determining a borrower’s maximum loan amount will largely or entirely precede the period from February 15, 2020, to June 30, 2020, and the period during which borrowers will be subject to the restrictions on allowable uses of the loans may extend beyond that period, for purposes of the determination of allowable uses of loans and the amount of loan forgiveness, this statutory exclusion will apply with respect to such taxes imposed or withheld at any time, not only during such period.4 Questions 2 – 18 published April 6, 2020.5 Questions 19 – 20 published April 8, 2020.Question: I filed or approved a loan application based on the version of the PPP Interim Final Rule published on April 2, 2020. Do I need to take any action based on the updated guidance in these FAQs? Answer: No. Borrowers and lenders may rely on the laws, rules, and guidance available at the time of the relevant application. However, borrowers whose previously submitted loan applications have not yet been processed may revise their applications based on clarifications reflected in these FAQs.Question: Are PPP loans for existing customers considered new accounts for FinCEN Rule CDD purposes? Are lenders required to collect, certify, or verify beneficial ownership information in accordance with the rule requirements for existing customers? Answer: If the PPP loan is being made to an existing customer and the necessary information was previously verified, you do not need to re-verify the information. Furthermore, if federally insured depository institutions and federally insured credit unions eligible to participate in the PPP program have not yet collected beneficial ownership information on existing customers, such institutions do not need to collect and verify beneficial ownership information for those customers applying for new PPP loans, unless otherwise indicated by the lender’s risk-based approach to BSA compliance.4Question: Do lenders have to use a promissory note provided by SBA or may they use their own? Answer: Lenders may use their own promissory note or an SBA form of promissory note.Question: The amount of forgiveness of a PPP loan depends on the borrower’s payroll costs over an eight-week period; when does that eight-week period begin? Answer: The eight-week period begins on the date the lender makes the first disbursement of the PPP loan to the borrower. The lender must make the first disbursement of the loan no later than ten calendar days from the date of loan approval.5Question: Do lenders need a separate SBA Authorization document to issue PPP loans? Answer: No. A lender does not need a separate SBA Authorization for SBA to guarantee a PPP loan. However, lenders must have executed SBA Form 2484 (theAs of May 3, 2020to issue PPP loans and receive a loan number for each originated PPP loan. Answer:If a franchise brand islisted on the SBA Franchise Directory, each of itsfranchiseesthat meets the applicable size standardcan apply for a PPP loan. (Thefranchisor does not apply on behalf of its franchisees.)The $10 million cap on PPP loansis a limit perfranchisee entity, and each franchisee is limited to one PPP loan.Franchise brands that have been denied listing on the Directory because of affiliation between franchisor andfranchisee may request listing toreceive PPP loans.SBA willnot apply affiliation rules to afranchise brand requesting listing on the Directory to participatein the PPP, but SBA will confirm that the brandis otherwiseeligible for listing on the Directory.24.Question: How do the $10 million cap and affiliationruleswork for hotels and restaurants (and any business assigned a North American Industry Classification System(NAICS)code beginning with 72)? Answer:Under the CARES Act,any singlebusinessentitythat is assigned a NAICScode beginning with 72 (includinghotels andrestaurants) andthat employs not more than 500employees perphysicallocationiseligible to receive a PPPloan.6Thisrequirementissatisfiedbyalenderwhenthelendercompletesthe processofsubmitting aloan through the E-Transystem;notransmissionorretentionofaphysical copy of Form2484isrequired.As of May 3, 2020In addition, SBA’s affiliation rules (13 CFR 121.103 and 13 CFR 121.301) do not apply to any business entity that is assigned a NAICS code beginning with 72 and that employs not more than a total of 500 employees. As a result, if each hotel or restaurant location owned by a parent business is a separate legal business entity, each hotel or restaurant location that employs not more than 500 employees is permitted to apply for a separate PPP loan provided it uses its unique EIN.The $10 million maximum loan amount limitation applies to each eligible business entity, because individual business entities cannot apply for more than one loan. The following examples illustrate how these principles apply.Example 1. Company X directly owns multiple restaurants and has no affiliates.Company X may apply for a PPP loan if it employs 500 or fewer employees per location (including at its headquarters), even if the total number of employees employed across all locations is over 500. Example 2. Company X wholly owns Company Y and Company Z (as a result, Companies X, Y, and Z are all affiliates of one another). Company Y and Company Z each own a single restaurant with 500 or fewer employees.Company Y and Company Z can each apply for a separate PPP loan, because each has 500 or fewer employees. The affiliation rules do not apply, because Company Y and Company Z each has 500 or fewer employees and is in the food services business (with a NAICS code beginning with 72). Example 3. Company X wholly owns Company Y and Company Z (as a result, Companies X, Y, and Z are all affiliates of one another). Company Y owns a restaurant with 400 employees. Company Z is a construction company with 400 employees.Company Y is eligible for a PPP loan because it has 500 or fewer employees. The affiliation rules do not apply to Company Y, because it has 500 or fewer employees and is in the food services business (with a NAICS code beginning with 72).The waiver of the affiliation rules does not apply to Company Z, because Company Z is in the construction industry. Under SBA’s affiliation rules, 13 CFR 121.301(f)(1) and (3), Company Y and Company Z are affiliates of one another because they are under the common control of Company X, which wholly owns both companies. This means that the size of Company Z is determined by adding its employees to those of Companies X and Y. Therefore, Company Z is deemed to have more than 500 employees, together with its affiliates. However, Company Z may be eligible to receive a PPP loan as a small business concern if it, together with Companies X and Y, meets SBA’s other applicable size standards,” as explained in FAQ #2. Question: Does the information lenders are required to collect from PPP applicants regarding every owner who has a 20% or greater ownership stake in the applicant business (i.e., owner name, title, ownership %, TIN, and address) satisfy a lender’s obligation to collect beneficial ownership information (which has a 25% ownership threshold) under the Bank Secrecy Act? As of May 3, 2020Answer: For lenders with existing customers: With respect to collecting beneficial ownership information for owners holding a 20% or greater ownership interest, if the PPP loan is being made to an existing customer and the lender previously verified the necessary information, the lender does not need to re-verify the information. Furthermore, if federally insured depository institutions and federally insured credit unions eligible to participate in the PPP program have not yet collected such beneficial ownership information on existing customers, such institutions do not need to collect and verify beneficial ownership information for those customers applying for new PPP loans, unless otherwise indicated by the lender’s risk-based approach to Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) compliance. For lenders with new customers: For new customers, the lender’s collection of the following information from all natural persons with a 20% or greater ownership stake in the applicant business will be deemed to satisfy applicable BSA requirements and FinCEN regulations governing the collection of beneficial ownership information: owner name, title, ownership %, TIN, address, and date of birth. If any ownership interest of 20% or greater in the applicant business belongs to a business or other legal entity, lenders will need to collect appropriate beneficial ownership information for that entity. If you have questions about requirements related to beneficial ownership, go to https://www.fincen.gov/resources/statutes-and-regulations/cdd-final-rule. Decisions regarding further verification of beneficial ownership information collected from new customers should be made pursuant to the lender’s risk-based approach to BSA compliance.77 Questions 21 – 25 published April 13, 2020.Question: SBA regulations require approval by SBA’s Standards of Conduct Committee (SCC) for SBA Assistance, other than disaster assistance, to an entity, if its sole proprietor, partner, officer, director, or stockholder with a 10 percent or more interest is: a current SBA employee; a Member of Congress; an appointed official or employee of the legislative or judicial branch; a member or employee of an SBA Advisory Council or SCORE volunteer; or a household member of any of the preceding individuals. Do these entities need the approval of the SCC in order to be eligible for a PPP loan? Answer: The SCC has authorized a blanket approval for PPP loans to such entities so that further action by the SCC is not necessary in the PPP program.Question: SBA regulations require a written statement of no objection by the pertinent Department or military service before it provides any SBA Assistance, other than disaster loans, to an entity, if its sole proprietor, partner, officer, director, or stockholder with a 10 percent or more interest, or if a household member of any of the preceding individuals, is an employee of another Government Department or Agency having a grade of at least GS-13 or its equivalent. Does this requirement apply to PPP loans? As of May 3, 2020Answer: No. The SCC has determined that a written statement of no objection is not required from another Government Department or Agency for PPP loans.Question: Is a lender permitted to submit a PPP loan application to SBA through E-Tran before the lender has fulfilled its responsibility to review the required borrower documentation and calculation of payroll costs? Answer: No. Before a lender submits a PPP loan through E-Tran, the lender must have collected the information and certifications contained in the Borrower Application Form and the lender must have fulfilled its obligations set forth in paragraphs 3.b.(i)-(iii) of the PPP Interim Final Rule. Please refer to the Interim Final Rule and FAQ #1 for more information on the lender’s responsibility regarding confirmation of payroll costs.Lenders who did not understand that these steps are required before submission to E-Tran need not withdraw applications submitted to E-Tran before April 14, 2020, but must fulfill lender responsibilities with respect to those applications as soon as practicable and no later than loan closing.88 Questions 26 – 28 published April 14, 2020.9 Question 29 published April 15, 2020.10 Question 30 published April 17, 2020.Question: Can lenders use scanned copies of documents or E-signatures or E-consents permitted by the E-sign Act? Answer: Yes. All PPP lenders may accept scanned copies of signed loan applications and documents containing the information and certifications required by SBA Form 2483 and the promissory note used for the PPP loan. Additionally, lenders may also accept any form of E-consent or E-signature that complies with the requirements of the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (P.L. 106-229).If electronic signatures are not feasible, when obtaining a wet ink signature without in-person contact, lenders should take appropriate steps to ensure the proper party has executed the document. This guidance does not supersede signature requirements imposed by other applicable law, including by the lender’s primary federal regulator.9Question: Can a lender sell a PPP loan into the secondary market? Answer: Yes. A PPP loan may be sold into the secondary market at any time after the loan is fully disbursed. A secondary market sale of a PPP loan does not require SBA approval. A PPP loan sold into the secondary market is 100% SBA guaranteed. A PPP loan may be sold on the secondary market at a premium or a discount to par value.10As of May 3, 2020Question: Do businesses owned by large companies with adequate sources of liquidity to support the business’s ongoing operations qualify for a PPP loan? Answer: In addition to reviewing applicable affiliation rules to determine eligibility, all borrowers must assess their economic need for a PPP loan under the standard established by the CARES Act and the PPP regulations at the time of the loan application. Although the CARES Act suspends the ordinary requirement that borrowers must be unable to obtain credit elsewhere (as defined in section 3(h) of the Small Business Act), borrowers still must certify in good faith that their PPP loan request is necessary. Specifically, before submitting a PPP application, all borrowers should review carefully the required certification that “[c]urrent economic uncertainty makes this loan request necessary to support the ongoing operations of the Applicant.” Borrowers must make this certification in good faith, taking into account their current business activity and their ability to access other sources of liquidity sufficient to support their ongoing operations in a manner that is not significantly detrimental to the business. For example, it is unlikely that a public company with substantial market value and access to capital markets will be able to make the required certification in good faith, and such a company should be prepared to demonstrate to SBA, upon request, the basis for its certification.Lenders may rely on a borrower’s certification regarding the necessity of the loan request. Any borrower that applied for a PPP loan prior to the issuance of this guidance and repays the loan in full by May 7, 2020 will be deemed by SBA to have made the required certification in good faith.1111 Question 31 published April 23, 2020.Question: Does the cost of a housing stipend or allowance provided to an employee as part of compensation count toward payroll costs? Answer: Yes. Payroll costs includes all cash compensation paid to employees, subject to the $100,000 annual compensation per employee limitation.Question: Is there existing guidance to help PPP applicants and lenders determine whether an individual employee’s principal place of residence is in the United States? Answer: PPP applicants and lenders may consider IRS regulations (26 CFR § 1.121-1(b)(2)) when determining whether an individual employee’s principal place of residence is in the United States.Question: Are agricultural producers, farmers, and ranchers eligible for PPP loans? Answer: Yes. Agricultural producers, farmers, and ranchers are eligible for PPP loans if: (i) the business has 500 or fewer employees, or (ii) the business fits within the revenue-based sized standard, which is average annual receipts of $1 million.Additionally, agricultural producers, farmers, and ranchers can qualify for PPP loans as a small business concern if their business meets SBA’s “alternative size standard.” TheAs of May 3, 2020“alternative size standard” is currently: (1) maximum net worth of the business is not more than $15 million, and (2) the average net income after Federal income taxes (excluding any carry-over losses) of the business for the two full fiscal years before the date of the application is not more than $5 million. For all of these criteria, the applicant must include its affiliates in its calculations. Link to Applicable Affiliation Rules for the PPP.Question: Are agricultural and other forms of cooperatives eligible to receive PPP loans? Answer: As long as other PPP eligibility requirements are met, small agricultural cooperatives and other cooperatives may receive PPP loans.1212 Questions 32 – 35 published April 24, 2020.13 Questions 36 published April 26, 2020.14 Question 37 published April 28, 2020.Question: To determine borrower eligibility under the 500-employee or other applicable threshold established by the CARES Act, must a borrower count all employees or only full-time equivalent employees? Answer: For purposes of loan eligibility, the CARES Act defines the term employee to include “individuals employed on a full-time, part-time, or other basis.” A borrower must therefore calculate the total number of employees, including part-time employees, when determining their employee headcount for purposes of the eligibility threshold. For example, if a borrower has 200 full-time employees and 50 part-time employees each working 10 hours per week, the borrower has a total of 250 employees.By contrast, for purposes of loan forgiveness, the CARES Act uses the standard of “full-time equivalent employees” to determine the extent to which the loan forgiveness amount will be reduced in the event of workforce reductions.13Question: Do businesses owned by private companies with adequate sources of liquidity to support the business’s ongoing operations qualify for a PPP loan? Answer: See response to FAQ #31.14Question: Section 1102 of the CARES Act provides that PPP loans are available only to applicants that were “in operation on February 15, 2020.” Is a business that was in operation on February 15, 2020 but had a change in ownership after February 15, 2020 eligible for a PPP loan? Answer: Yes. As long as the business was in operation on February 15, 2020, if it meets the other eligibility criteria, the business is eligible to apply for a PPP loan regardless of the change in ownership. In addition, where there is a change in ownership effectuated through a purchase of substantially all assets of a business that was in operation onAs of May 3, 2020February 15, the business acquiring the assets will be eligible to apply for a PPP loan even if the change in ownership results in the assignment of a new tax ID number and even if the acquiring business was not in operation until after February 15, 2020. If the acquiring business has maintained the operations of the pre-sale business, the acquiring business may rely on the historic payroll costs and headcount of the pre-sale business for the purposes of its PPP application, except where the pre-sale business had applied for and received a PPP loan. The Administrator, in consultation with the Secretary, has determined that the requirement that a business “was in operation on February 15, 2020” should be applied based on the economic realities of the business’s operations.Question: Will SBA review individual PPP loan files? Answer: Yes. In FAQ #31, SBA reminded all borrowers of an important certification required to obtain a PPP loan. To further ensure PPP loans are limited to eligible borrowers in need, the SBA has decided, in consultation with the Department of the Treasury, that it will review all loans in excess of $2 million, in addition to other loans as appropriate, following the lender’s submission of the borrower’s loan forgiveness application. Additional guidance implementing this procedure will be forthcoming. The outcome of SBA’s review of loan files will not affect SBA’s guarantee of any loan for which the lender complied with the lender obligations set forth in paragraphs III.3.b(i)-(iii) of the Paycheck Protection Program Rule (April 2, 2020) and further explained in FAQ #1.1515 Questions 38 – 39 published April 29, 2020.Question: Will a borrower’s PPP loan forgiveness amount (pursuant to section 1106 of the CARES Act and SBA’s implementing rules and guidance) be reduced if the borrower laid off an employee, offered to rehire the same employee, but the employee declined the offer? Answer: No. As an exercise of the Administrator’s and the Secretary’s authority under Section 1106(d)(6) of the CARES Act to prescribe regulations granting de minimis exemptions from the Act’s limits on loan forgiveness, SBA and Treasury intend to issue an interim final rule excluding laid-off employees whom the borrower offered to rehire (for the same salary/wages and same number of hours) from the CARES Act’s loan forgiveness reduction calculation. The interim final rule will specify that, to qualify for this exception, the borrower must have made a good faith, written offer of rehire, and the employee’s rejection of that offer must be documented by the borrower. Employees and employers should be aware that employees who reject offers of re-employment may forfeit eligibility for continued unemployment compensation.Question: Can a seasonal employer that elects to use a 12-week period between May 1, 2019 and September 15, 2019 to calculate its maximum PPP loan amount under the interim final rule issued by Treasury on April 27, 2020, make all the required certifications on the Borrower Application Form? As of May 3, 2020Answer: Yes. The Borrower Application Form requires applicants to certify that “The Applicant is eligible to receive a loan under the rules in effect at the time this application is submitted that have been issued by the Small Business Administration (SBA) implementing the Paycheck Protection Program.” On April 27, 2020, Treasury issued an interim final rule allowing seasonal borrowers to use an alternative base period for purposes of calculating the loan amount for which they are eligible under the PPP. An applicant that is otherwise in compliance with applicable SBA requirements, and that complies with Treasury’s interim final rule on seasonal workers, will be deemed eligible for a PPP loan under SBA rules. Instead of following the instructions on page 3 of the Borrower Application Form for the time period for calculating average monthly payroll for seasonal businesses, an applicant may elect to use the time period in Treasury’s interim final rule on seasonal workers.Question: Do nonprofit hospitals exempt from taxation under section 115 of the Internal Revenue Code qualify as “nonprofit organizations” under section 1102 of the CARES Act? Answer: Section 1102 of the CARES Act defines the term “nonprofit organization” as “an organization that is described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and that is exempt from taxation under section 501(a) of such Code.” The Administrator, in consultation with the Secretary of the Treasury, understands that nonprofit hospitals exempt from taxation under section 115 of the Internal Revenue Code are unique in that many such hospitals may meet the description set forth in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code to qualify for tax exemption under section 501(a), but have not sought to be recognized by the IRS as such because they are otherwise fully tax-exempt under a different provision of the Internal Revenue Code.Accordingly, the Administrator will treat a nonprofit hospital exempt from taxation under section 115 of the Internal Revenue Code as meeting the definition of “nonprofit organization” under section 1102 of the CARES Act if the hospital reasonably determines, in a written record maintained by the hospital, that it is an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is therefore within a category of organization that is exempt from taxation under section 501(a).16 The hospital’s certification of eligibility on the Borrower Application Form cannot be made without this determination. This approach helps accomplish the statutory purpose of ensuring that a broad range of borrowers, including entities that are helping to lead the medical response to the ongoing pandemic, can benefit from the loans provided under the PPP.16 This determination need not account for the ancillary conditions set forth in section 501(r) of the Internal Revenue Code and elsewhere associated with securing the tax exemption under that section. Section 501(r) states that a hospital organization shall not be treated as described in section 501(c)(3) unless it meets certain community health and other requirements. However, section 1102 of the CARES Act defines the term “nonprofit organization” solely by reference to section 501(c)(3), and section 501(r) does not amend section 501(c)(3). Therefore, for purposes of the PPP, the requirements of section 501(r) do not apply to the determination of whether an organization is “described in section 501(c)(3).”As of May 3, 2020This guidance is solely for purposes of qualification as a “nonprofit organization” under section 1102 of the CARES Act and related purposes of the CARES Act, and does not have any consequences for federal tax law purposes. Nonprofit hospitals should also review all other applicable eligibility criteria, including the Interim Final Rules on Promissory Notes, Authorizations, Affiliation, and Eligibility (April 28, 2020) regarding an important limitation on ownership by state or local governments. 85 FR 23450, 23451.17
Colossians 4:5 NLT 'Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity.' Over the centuries, the Church has attempted to obey the great commission to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20) in a variety of ways. There is an inbuilt resistance to the gospel throughout society in all cultures for our adversary, the devil, seeks to distract humanity from God’s promise of personal salvation. Consequently, Christianity has its critics and we can at times confirm our critics through our well-meaning attempts in serving God. We have to make judgements daily on how best to live out our faith. It is self-evidently beneficial for us to live as God directs us to, but not purely for our own self-interest. There is always a danger that the church community becomes an end in itself. Then all our attention is upon the character of our church and by default, we direct all our resources to servicing our church’s needs. We also need to maintain a close watch on how we live within our community so that we discover how best to communicate the gospel and reveal the God who we love and serve. Our most natural vehicle for communication is language. Yet, today in a world of social media in which we drown in opinion and so-called “news”, words are in many ways a debased currency for communication. It has been said that “actions speak louder than words”. Indeed St Francis is attributed with the statement: “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.” Whether factual or not, the sentiment speaks for itself. Living the gospel requires me to consider the intent behind my actions. When Adam blamed both Eve and God for his predicament with a forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:12), it cut no ice and failed to deliver him from God’s judgement. Decisions matter, for they inform our behaviour and our behaviour offers a clear indication of our belief system. A watching world in search of God needs your life to reveal God’s gospel. QUESTION: Does your behaviour offer a window into the love and grace of God? PRAYER: Heavenly Father, please help me make the most of every opportunity to share the good news of Jesus today.

Question: Does it matter what form of B12 you take? Cyanocobalamin is cheap and there's not really any clear evidence that it's harmful, but I just don't like the idea that it is cobalamin bound to cyanide. It's not found in the food supply. Forming cyanocobalamin and peeing it out is actually one of the main ways you detoxify cyanide. Hydroxocobalamin is also relatively inexpensive. It's relatively easy to get as injections. It is not an end product of detoxification. It is found in very high concentrations in the food supply. The normal forms of vitamin B12 that you find in the diet from food are hydroxocobalamin and methylcobalamin in milk, and hydroxocobalamin and adenosylcobalamin in meat. Hydroxocobalamin is the most universal food form of cobalamin, and it is always a substantial part of the food supply. I'm pretty sure it's cheaper than methylcobalamin, so I would use intramuscular injections of hydroxocobalamin. Most B vitamins start their absorption in the stomach and then mostly absorb in the small intestine. In the case of B12, when you're dealing with food, you're absorbing it in the small intestine almost exclusively with intrinsic factor that's produced in your stomach. Start with a milligram of oral hydroxocobalamin. Test that against your serum B12. If it's not moving your serum B12, see if 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 milligrams do. Because if they do, then taking that every day is going to be probably easier. Well, I mean, it depends on what you like. But you're probably going to like taking oral B12 more than you're going to like getting intramuscular injections. I would see if raising the dose works first. I'd use oral hydroxocobalamin. Then if you have to use intramuscular, I will use hydroxocobalamin. I guess you just have to judge it against from a medical perspective they're always worried about compliance, because unlike the people who are showing up to this AMA, the general population has very low motivation compared to us. Injection is preferable from that standpoint because there are fewer things to do. Plus, you have an accountability buddy because someone's got to inject you. You get an accountability buddy to do something once a month versus you have the personal responsibility to do something every day. From a compliance perspective, it's vastly superior, the getting injected. But if you're already taking 15 supplements every morning, then it's probably way easier for you to just add megadose of B12 in with those oral supplements than to get intramuscular injection. I'd prefer it. Question: Does the petition to make special apply to patent applications for inventions dealing with energy resources? Luke 4:1-2 NLT 'Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the River Jordan. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.' Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent. The word “Lent” means “lengthening” and identifies the growing hours of daylight as spring advances. Symbolically, it speaks of the approaching light of Christ, with the resurrection dispelling darkness once and for all. Easter is the moment darkness is defeated and God re-established friendship with all humanity. Today, in many traditions, Christians will receive an ash cross upon their foreheads, a sign of penitence and reminder that it is “through many tribulations” that we enter God’s kingdom (Acts 14:22, NKJV). In an instant, the Spirit leads Jesus from the glory of his baptism to the wasteland of the desert. How often have I fallen from the heights of worship and wonder to the despair of doubt and despondency? The desert is an essential element in the life of every disciple. Israel must cross the desert before entering the Promised Land, Elijah flees from the moment of his greatest triumph, depressed he enters the loneliness of the wilderness. The desert is where we learn to trust and grow in God. The desert simplifies all of life. It is a place that I either enter or die within, or somewhere I learn to survive through sheer persistence. The desert cannot support life. Only when we find God are we able to ensure both nourishment and survival. Jesus fasted for there was nothing to support life in the wilderness. However, he fed off the bread of life and discovered what he later taught, that we do not live by bread alone. Israel discovered this with the miraculous provision of the manna. QUESTION: Does the desert experience call to you repel you? Or are these opposites in equal tension? PRAYER: My heart is set on you, God, and I choose to persevere in my quest to deepen my friendship with you.
Question: Does folic acid act differently in the body than natural folate? | Masterjohn Q&A Files #68They don't really. Everything that is said bad about folic acid is sort of true to an extent but has been completely exaggerated in some circles. What happens is you have an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase, or DHFR. Its purpose is not to metabolize synthetic folic acid obviously because that folic acid molecule doesn't exist in the food supply. Its normal purpose is that every time that you use folate to participate in processes outside of methylation, such as DNA synthesis, you wind up producing dihydrofolate as a byproduct. DHFR recycles that and turns it into tetrahydrofolate, or THF. Tetrahydrofolate is what has the methyl group added to make methylfolate. The question is, does that synthetic folic acid, we call that unmetabolized folic acid, does that cause harm? There are scientific hypotheses that it might, and it might, but there's no conclusive evidence of that. That's one side of the argument against synthetic folic acid. The other side of the argument is now that you are giving the DHFR enzyme more work, that means that might be detracting from the work that it has in recycling dihydrofolate that came out of the DNA synthesis reactions to make tetrahydrofolate. People think that they just cut out white flour and therefore they're better off. No. You cut out white flour, now you need to do more work to make sure that you are actually getting your nutrients from whole foods because if you were eating six pieces of white toast that you didn't have to worry about getting nutrients from whole foods and now you do. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NLT 'All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.' I often remark to Jayne that looking back I hardly recognise myself as I stepped from university into Christian ministry. There was a confidence and a swagger that I fail to recognise within myself today. Now I appreciate a depth of reflection that I knew nothing of as a young man. Life experience can either result in greater wisdom, or simply add frustration. Wisdom is not guaranteed with age. For me that wisdom has created a softer, more accepting heart. I am content within my own space, hence my pursuit of the contemplative life. I am less convinced of my own ability to change much apart from prayer. With confidence, I affirm Paul’s declaration that God comforts us in all our troubles. This is not to say our troubles go away. Certainly, we may begin our prayers in this manner. Yet, if troubles endure, we face the challenge of discovering God’s comfort in those troubles. Jayne, with her chronic pain condition, is invited to manage the pain while discerning Christ each and every day. I am called to both support and encourage her while also finding Christ for myself within the many restrictions Jayne’s condition brings to our life. Neither of us naturally feels an inclination to give thanks to God. However, we discover so many benefits when we pause to consider God in our challenge. Each of us will experience disappointment and heartache. Yet, the great news is that God is present throughout and can be found wherever we find ourselves. As we find God’s comfort for ourselves, so we have the authority to comfort others. We empathise, pray and praise God together. QUESTION: Does any part of Micah’s journey of faith resonate with yours? PRAYER: May your peace and quietness fill me, whatever twists and turns I encounter in this day.
Question: Does mixing carbohydrate with fat cause people to get fat because of the Randle cycle? There's a theory floating around on the internet that mixed diets are more fattening than low-carb or low-fat diets because of the metabolic competition between glucose and fatty acids. I don't believe this to be true because, in the context of isocaloric diets, mixed diets don’t seem to be more fattening than low-carb or low-fat diets. Isocaloric diets are important for understanding physiological cause and effect, but they interfere with the real-life practical understanding of something. We want to use isocaloric science to study the academic question of, physiologically, are carbs and fat more fattening when combined than not combined. But, in real life, people eat more food on a mixed diet than they eat on a low-fat or low-carb diet. I think someone who says mixed diets are more fattening because of the Randle Cycle is totally misunderstanding this. They are more fattening because of the hyperpalatability factors that Stephan Guyenet has explained. Also, they probably are more likely to cause metabolic harm because of what Alex Leaf has explained about the Randle Cycle in his post, “Why you may reconsider buttering your potato” at Superhumanradio. He was arguing that you don't want to put butter on your potato because you have substrate competition between glucose and fatty acids, which makes it more difficult to clear the glucose from your blood and causes a compensatory higher insulin response. I'm not so insulin-centric that I believe that you necessarily always want to be minimizing your insulin response, and I definitely know that I have friends and colleagues who disagree with me on that, but I just don't view any disease, including type-2 diabetes, as a problem with hyperinsulinemia. The short of it is that the more you mix carbs and fat in your diet, the more likely you are to overeat. You don't necessarily overeat, but it's way more probable because it's hyperpalatable. The more you mix carbs and fat, the more you don't specialize in one or the other. What's the most efficient thing to do? If you eat a high-carb, low-fat diet your body specializes in burning carbs, you eat a high-fat, low-carb diet your body specializes in burning fat — and you're not going to do either of those as good if you're eating a mixed diet. Can you do them good enough? Often times, but if you have metabolic problems you might want to try a low-carb or a low-fat diet so you can specialize and be more efficient with your metabolism, because if you have metabolic problems whatever you're doing isn't working for you right now.

Acts 9:13-15a NLT “But Lord,” exclaimed Ananias, “I’ve heard many people talk about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in Jerusalem! And he is authorized by the leading priests to arrest everyone who calls upon your name.” But the Lord said, “Go...” We have a wonderful dog in the Oratory. He is a Chorkie, a Chihuahua and Yorkie cross. Dylan is small, but believes he is a Rottweiler! When walking he demonstrates a desire to take on all other dogs, especially large ones. I’ve kindly explained that he is in fact no more than a snack to them. Yet, he pays no heed to my constructive advice and retains his belligerence on every walk. Like Dylan, Ananias from today’s scripture reading lacks perspective. However, he is the opposite and assumes he is the human equivalent of a Chorkie, settling to live within the limits nature has placed around him. Yet he discovers that in God natural boundaries are easily suspended. He has an inkling God wants him to go pray with Saul, the persecutor and assassin of Christians. Ananias has no desire to die anytime soon. But, in reluctant obedience, he responds, confirms Saul’s conversion and prepares him for the mission that will turn the world upside down. We never hear of Ananias again, but Paul’s missionary adventures are the result of his obedience and bravery. Mission is allowing God to lead us beyond the limits we place upon ourselves. How I perceive myself is not how God sees me. I have an inkling and must choose to pursue it in case it is of God. Once we seek God throughout our day, we can with confidence pursue those inklings and participate in his mission. We may not often receive feedback. We may never have our name in any future narrative. Yet, the purpose of God will have moved forward as a direct result of our obedience. It is a shame that the enemy’s first and often most potent weapon is fear; yet “perfect love expels all fear” (1 John 4:18, NLT). Face down fear and fertilise the kingdom. QUESTION: Does your perspective tend towards seeing yourself as a Chorkie or Rottweiler? PRAYER: All-seeing God, give me your insight and perspective today. May I see challenges and opportunities through the eyes of faith and not fear.
John 15:16 NLT 'You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.' Each one of us is called to mission by Jesus, who chose us to follow him. We are only able to choose because we have first been enlightened by God. It feels as if it is our own choice, yet in truth it’s our response to his invitation. Herein lies the struggle for each of us. I so often sense what God invites me to embrace, yet I exercise my choice to do the opposite. For God’s invitation consistently requires that I stretch in my faith and reach beyond my comfort zone. Mission is always beyond my comfort zone. For I am being sent (the meaning of the word “mission”) with a purpose. Mission embraces so much more than my words. It demands that I daily exercise choices so that there is a consistency in my life and time style that reflects the character and purpose of God. It was Dietrich Bonhoeffer who stated that words are cheap, while action is costly. He also pointed out, “Jesus himself did not try to convert the two thieves on the cross; he waited until one of them turned to him.” It is the quality of who I am that presents the clearest evidence as to the reality of God. When people approach me with their questions, I truly am able to engage in mission. If the fruit I desire in my life can never be harvested because its blossoms perish through the frost of disobedience, I offer no sustenance for those who seek the bread of life. It’s easy to look at the mission field, those in need of Christ, without paying close attention to yourself. It is within you that the kingdom is manifest, but only to the degree you address those appetites that draw you away from God’s action in your own life. QUESTION: Does fruitfulness in mission inoculate you from difficulty, pain and disappointment? PRAYER: May the challenges I face become a testimony to God’s grace.

The Air Jordan I was originally released in 1985 and is almost single-handedly responsible for modern-day sneaker culture. Michael Jordan originally wanted to sign with either Converse or Adidas. But Converse declined and according to a Wall Street Journal article published in 2015 so did Adidas. Still MJ was not convinced. Only when Nike, thinking they had nothing to loose, offered to give MJ his own shoe- and clothing line did he change his mind. This was unheard of at the time, no NBA player had an entire product line named after them. As the first basketball player with his own signature shoes Jordan would immediately become the king of basketball sneaker advertising. Just to be on the safe side Nike worked an out-clause into the contract: if Air Jordans didn’t earn Nike $3 million in the first 3 years, or if Jordan didn’t make the NBA All-Star Game in his first three years, Nike could dump him. Jordan was voted into the All-Star Game as a Rookie starter and the "Air Jordan 1" shoe made Nike $130 million in 1985 alone. The rest is history. 54. Open Comments: 55. Whitney Elizabeth Houston, @22 yrs old: Singer, actress, model, and producer, Whitney Houston is one of the world’s most successful female entertainers of all time. 116. Born and raised in Newark NJ, she is the daughter of Grammy-award-winning gospel singer, Emily “Cissy” Houston and John R. Houston, who managed his daughter’s production company. 117. Childhood & Early Life 118. She was no stranger to the entertainment industry, having come from a line of singers and actresses. Not only did her mother’s vocal group, the ‘Sweet Inspirations’, sing backup for Aretha Franklin, but her cousins Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick are also renowned singers, as well as her godmother, Darlene Love. She began performing in her church’s gospel choir as a soloist at the age of eleven and learned to play the piano. While attending Catholic school, she took voice lessons from her mother, with whom she would occasionally perform in nightclubs. 119. Career 120. In 1977 (@ 14 yrs old), she was a backup singer for Michael Zager Band’s single ‘Life’s a Party’ and the following year she sang on Chaka Khan’s single ‘I’m Every Woman’. She was offered an opportunity to sign with a recording company, but her mother declined so she would finish high school. In the early 1980s, (@17 yrs old), she worked as a model, appearing in several magazines including, ‘Seventeen’, where she became the first African American to be featured on the cover. She also took on acting gigs appearing in TV show episodes such as, ‘Gimme a Break’, while continuing to develop her vocal skills. In 1983,(@ 20yrs old) she was signed with ‘Arista Records’. President Clive Davis spent the next couple years assembling lyricists and producers to balance her gospel-like sound with contemporary melodies. In 1985, her debut album, ‘Whitney Houston’ gradually became the number one selling album of her career. She went on to win two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards. 121. Open Comments: 122. A Hot Mess 123. On February 11th, 2012, Whitney Houston (@ 48 yrs old) was found facedown in a bathtub. Weeks later, an autopsy report would contribute Houston’s death to accidental drowning, heart disease and cocaine use. There were additional traces of a muscle relaxant, Xanax, marijuana and an allergy medication in the singer’s system. 124. The sad, secret life of Whitney Houston: From a secret lesbian relationship to a decades-long struggle with drugs, five years after singer’s death, a new film ‘Whitney: Can I Be Me’ examines what caused her tragic downfall - Tara Brady [Jun 12, 2017] https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/music/the-sad-secret-life-of-whitney-houston-1.3105861 125. Selected quotes from the article: 126. What exactly killed Houston? Why did she drown? How did she drown? Was she simply overwhelmed by the controlling demands of her formidable mother, Cissy Houston, Svengali Clive Davis, and her record company, Arista? Did the aftermath of her toxic and co-dependent marriage to Bobby Brown send her spiralling? Or was it the dissolution of her decades-old lesbian relationship with her assistant Robyn Crawford? It’s complicated, as documentarian Nick Broomfield discovered. “In the end I think the divide between who she was and what her public persona was became more and more difficult,” says documentarian Nick Broomfield. “And she just went down, 127. The imploding relations between Houston, Bobby Brown and Robyn Crawford. Brown told Us Weekly magazine that Houston was bisexual and that she once had an affair with Tupac Shakur. He went on to say that Houston kept her relationship with Crawford hidden because of Cissy. “I really feel that if Robyn was accepted into Whitney’s life, Whitney would still be alive today,” Brown told the magazine. “She didn’t have close friends with her anymore.” 128. From Cissy’s notorious 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey: “Would it have bothered you if your daughter was gay?” “Absolutely,” Cissy snapped back. “You wouldn’t have condoned it?” continued an incredulous Oprah. “Not at all.” ...“I didn’t particularly like [Crawford],” Cissy told the talk show queen. “She just spoke too much, disrespectful sometimes, like she had something over Nippy (Houston’s nickname), and I didn’t like that at all. She was all right, she turned out to be all right, I guess. That was her friend.” 129. Houston and Crawford first bonded while they were teenagers working at a community centre in East Orange, New Jersey. When Houston’s modelling career began to take off, she’d face bullying in school, and Crawford, who was originally a friend of Houston’s older brothers Michael and Gary, would frequently come to the rescue. When Houston moved out of her family home, she shared her first apartment with Crawford. Deep into Houston and Brown’s 14-year marriage, Crawford remained a fixture in Houston’s domestic arrangements. 130. Houston’s marriage to Brown, understandably, made for an uneasy romantic trinity. In Derrick Handspike’s unauthorised 2008 biography, Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But . . ., the author quotes Brown as saying: “Now I realise Whitney had a different agenda than I did when we got married. I believe her agenda was to clean up her image while mine was to be loved and have children. “Whitney felt she had to make rumours of a lesbian affair go away. Since she was the American Sweetheart and all, that didn’t go too well with her image. In Whitney’s situation the only solution was to get married and have kids. That would kill all speculation whether it was true or not.” 131. Supermarket tabloids did a brisk trade during the 1990s by peddling the idea that Houston’s life spiralled into addiction after she married Brown. She was the gospel-singing good girl – the church-going daughter of Cissy and a cousin of Dionne Warwick. He was a bad boy who, aged 20, when they first met, had already been shot and stabbed in the shoulder. Their tumultuous marriage (from 1992 to 2007), characterised by drug use, infidelity and a costly entourage, was seldom out of the headlines. But contrary to popular belief, Brown did not introduce his troubled wife to cocaine. Houston first dabbled with drugs with her brothers, Michael and Gary, as a teenager. The truth is that Houston was always as “street“ as her R&B star husband. But that part of her personal history didn’t fit with what Broomfield calls “the Whitney character”. As Pattie Howard, Houston’s backing vocalist, notes: “People may not know it but Whitney was from the ‘hood’. They wanted to present her as the princess. And that’s what white America was presented with.” Kenneth Reynolds, who worked in marketing for Arista Records recalls that: “Anything that was too black sounding was sent back. We wanted Joni Mitchell. We wanted Barbra Streisand. ” “She was very carefully groomed for nearly two years before the first album came out,” explains Broomfield. “So every aspect of her was carefully considered. She was a major project. A lot of money was spent on her. Anything that was too R&B was out. They didn’t want a female James Brown. That was not part of their vision. Which, of course, was a very successful vision.” 132. In 1989, just as Houston topped 25 million in album sales and surpassed the Beatles’s record with seven consecutive number one hits, she attended the Soul Train awards where, in response to her “white” music, she was roundly booed. Pre-Beyoncé and Mariah Carey, “crossover” was synonymous with cultural betrayal. People shouted “Oreo” – brown on the outside, white on the inside – as her nomination for Best Female Vocalist was announced. “It’s not a good feeling,” says Houston, in Can I Be Me. “It’s horrible and kind of funny. You think: ‘Are they booing me?’ And you have to sit there and be cordial and smiley. And you feel like: ‘Oh my God’.” Kirk Whalum, the saxophonist who toured with Houston for more than seven years recalls that night, which coincidentally, was the first time she met Brown. “It was devastating [for her],” says Whalum. 133. By the end of the 90s, Houston found herself at the centre of a perfect storm of ongoing racial friction, marital troubles and drug abuse. Friends, unable to watch Houston’s decline, began to drift away. Her father, John, died in 2003, but not before his management company, John Houston Entertainment LLC, filed a $100 million lawsuit against his own daughter. Months before his death, he made a public appeal on the syndicated show, Celebrity Justice: “You get your act together, honey, and you pay me the money that you owe me.” Robyn Crawford’s departure in 2000, too, prompted a new, crippling dependency on crack-cocaine and other substances. - “Robyn was the one who was keeping her together,” says writer Allison Samuels. “That’s when drugs became so important to her.” 134. Open Comments: 135. The Smooth Operator -Helen Folasade Adu, professionally known as Sade (@26 yrs old) 136. Sade is an internationally renowned, multi-Grammy award winning singer who is known for her smooth, melodic vocals and the seamless incorporation of different styles of music. She was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria on January 16, 1959. Her father Adebisi Adu, a Nigerian lecturer of economics, and her mother Anne Hayes, a district nurse, had met in London. Sade was the couple’s second child. Shortly after her birth, Sade’s parents separated and she and her brother followed their mother to Colchester, Essex, England. There, the children were raised by their mother as well as their maternal grandfather. Upon finishing her education at Clacton County High School in Colchester, she enrolled at Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design in London to pursue fashion and design. After completion of her program, she worked as a model and menswear designer. 137. Sade entered the music scene around 1980 when she started singing harmony for Arriva, a Latin funk band. She joined another funk band called Pride and was a background singer for the group. Pride garnered much attention from record companies due to their performances around London. Eventually Sade and fellow bandmates, Stuart Matthewman, Paul Denma, and Andrew Hale signed a deal with the U.K. division of Epic Records and formed the band Sade. In 1984 the band’s debut album, Diamond Life, was released to much critical success and was bolstered by singles such as “Hang On to Your Love” and “Smooth Operator.” The band followed up their debut with their next album, Promise, which was released the following year. “The Sweetest Taboo,” a single from Promise, was on the U.S. Hot 100 for six months. She was awarded the Grammy for best new artist of 1985. 138. Open Comments: 139. Selected quote about her sound 140. Let's get this into context. With Sade it's unlikely there will ever be a full, naked baring of the soul. In terms of contemporary icons, it's better to listen to Mary J for stories of drama and shattered devotion. But Sade, today, is all about the acknowledged presence of absence. What's missing in her music is as important as what's present. - The Fader 141. A small, yet important, fact: When Sade signed her first record deal with Epic in the early '80s, she accepted a small advance, worth ~$70,000 in exchange for an unusually high cut of sales for a new artist—15 percent. It was a deal that ended up proving immensely lucrative, and it has freed her from many of the commercial demands that often encumber artists. Put simply, she only works when and how she wants to. As one executive at her label, Epic, put it to me: "Who's going to argue with a woman who's sold 50 million albums? She's more powerful than anyone working at the label, including the [President]." - The Fader 142. Question: Does the Sade sound ever wear out? 143. The Movie Scene 144. The Color Purple/Film synopsis 145. An epic tale spanning forty years in the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), an African-American woman living in the South who survives incredible abuse and bigotry. After Celie's abusive father marries her off to the equally debasing "Mister" Albert Johnson (Danny Glover), things go from bad to worse, leaving Celie to find companionship anywhere she can. She perseveres, holding on to her dream of one day being reunited with her sister in Africa. Based on the novel by Alice Walker. 146. Review by Roger Ebert 147. Returning to "The Color Purple" after almost 20 years, I can see its flaws more easily than when I named it the best film of 1985, but I can also understand why it moved me so deeply, and why the greatness of some films depends not on their perfection or logic, but on their heart. The movie may have inconsistencies, confusions and improbabilities, but there is one perfect thing at its center, and that is the character of Celie, as played by Whoopi Goldberg. "Here is this year's winner for best actress," I wrote in my original review, and that should have been true, but although "The Color Purple" had 11 nominations, it won not a single Oscar. When a movie character is really working, we become that character. That's what the movies offer: Escapism into lives other than our own. I am not female, I am not black, I am not Celie, but for a time during "The Color Purple," my mind deceives me that I am all of those things, and as I empathize with her struggle and victory I learn something about what it must have been like to be her. - Roger Ebert 148. In Honor of Its 33rd Anniversary, Here Are 10 Life Lessons I Learned From the Color Purple - By Melissa Kimble Dec 18, 2018 [https://www.oprahmag.com/entertainment/tv-movies/a25616715/the-color-purple-quotes-anniversary/] 150. I was born a few years after the film was released. However, I can credit much of my self discovery to the many times I’ve watched it. My favorite quotes from the movie taught me valuable lessons about Black womanhood, faith, and self love. And these 10 are the ones I’ll never forget. 151. “Girl, you oughta bash Mister’s head open and think about heaven later.” By Oprah Winfrey - In a film where women are treated like inferiors, Sofia breaks the mold by refusing to be her husband's punching bag. This scene-stealing monologue, with its rage filled entrance by the O of O, is an act of defiance—especially one committed in early 20th century Georgia. It was powerful and necessary to see a Black woman go against the grain on screen. And to me, it was a call to action to be fearless. 152. "I'm poor, Black, I may even be ugly, but dear God, I’m here! I’m here!" By Whoopi Goldberg - What a victorious statement this was by Celie, who, up until this point, had spent most of her life feeling unworthy and invisible. It reminded me that even with our flaws and imperfections, we still deserve to show up in our own lives. 153. "Until you do right by me, everything you think about is going to crumble." By - Whoopi Goldberg - With these words, Celie breaks a cycle of abuse from Mister and sticks up for herself. I interpreted this line as a sign that I don’t have to carry the weight of people who have caused my pain; life will take care of everything. 154. “Miss Celie, why you always covering up your smile?” By Desreta Jackson - Growing up, I was very insecure about my smile. And when Shug Avery posed this question to Miss Celie, it also made me turn to myself. When Shug encourages Celie to smile, I learned that there’s no need to cover up my own 155. Open Comments: 156. Welcome to Jon's author diary for week ending August 4, 2019. It’s been a slow week in terms of actual writing. I have been in holiday mode, so I've been doing dad stuff. My mother came to stay and took a daytrip to Blackpool in scorching sunshine. I spent most of the day nipping between areas of shade and pouring bowls of water for my guide dog, Digit. It's been difficult to keep any kind of writing routine, so I’ve been snatching moments here and there to do small tasks, such as gathering quotes for non-fiction books and reading. When I’m not focused on writing, my mind tends to run away with ideas. This is a blessing and a curse. I had the idea of writing a space fantasy series involving dragons…and a zombie apocalypse series…and a military fantasy series…a grimdark fantasy assassin series. I’m sure for some authors this would be wonderful, but for me they’re distractions. I’m sitting on several books in various draft states—Cleric of the Wasteland, Blind Reset, the Black Death trilogy, Black Death: London, Justice, and three non-fiction books. Plus, I’m in the process of re-writing the first three Wasteland books! So, the last thing I need is more distractions. I need to focus on finishing all the open projects before moving onto a new one, but it’s like my mind keeps going, ‘hey, what about this?’ I’m like a magpie drawn to shiny new things. Patreon I’ve posted the first four chapters of the re-written Wizard of the Wasteland onto my Patreon page. You can read the first chapter HERE for free, and get full access to exclusive short stories, audio, articles, reviews, and early releases from a dollar a month. Brief Overview - [http://www.american-historama.org/1945-1989-cold-war-era/strategic-defense-initiative.htm] 57. The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), also known as Star Wars because it promoted ideas such as lasers and computer-guided projectiles, was the US response to possible nuclear attacks and it was introduced on March 23, 1983 during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. 58. The objective of the SDI program was to develop an advanced anti-ballistic missile system to enable the United States to prevent missile attacks from the USSR and other countries during the Cold War. 59. The idea was to set up many space satellites that would detect the launch, and then shoot down, any enemy missiles. 60. The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) was cancelled in 1993 and replaced with the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) renamed the Missile Defense Agency in 2002. 61. 10 SDI Highlights 62. #1: Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) was the military strategy adopted during the Cold War Arms Race. It assumed that both the USSR and the US would refrain from launching nuclear weapons, knowing that the other country would retaliate and cause the complete nuclear annihilation of both the attacker and the defender. 63. #2: The Strategic "Defense" Initiative program focused on strategic defense and replaced the "Offensive" doctrine of mutual assured destruction (MAD). 64. #3: SDI became the subject of intense political controversy. A Washington Post article published the day after the speech, quoted Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy describing the proposal as "reckless Star Wars schemes." 65. #4: Critics in the media used that term frequently (despite Reagan's request that they use the program's official name), implying it was an impractical science fiction. This did much damage the program's credibility. 66. #5: Many critics believed that it would extend the arms race into space and cause the USSR to expand its own offensive nuclear weapons. 67. #6: SDI began extremely expensive research projects costing billions of dollars every year. The research projects included space-based laser weapons, spy satellites and space-based interceptors. 68. #7: In response to the US research projects, the Soviets began work on developing their own version of Strategic Defense Initiative. 69. #8: The efforts by the Soviet Union to match the expenditure of the U.S. in the Cold War Arms Race contributed greatly to nation's economic problems. 70. #9: Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev realized that the USSR could not afford the Cold War Arms Race or match the massive expenditure involved in the US Strategic Defense Initiative. In 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev fell from power and the Soviet Union was dissolved. 71. #10: The SDI had itself become an economic weapon and was instrumental in causing the downfall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. 72. Audio Clip: 73. Question: Do you think the threat of Nuclear War has grown or shrunk during your lifetime? 74. Music Scene 75. Run (Joseph Simmons) @ 19 yrs old / DMC (Darryl McDaniels) @ 19 yrs old / Jam Master Jay (Jason Mizell) @ 18 yrs old 106. The trio grew up in Hollis, Queens, a moderately stable African American community in New York. / DMC was born to a teenage mother and was adopted three months later. 107. Run and DMC were childhood friends 108. 1978: JMJ discovers the turntable at age 13. By age 14 he is spinning for live crowds at block parties. 109. 1980: The trio met via the emerging hip-hop scene at Hollis' "Two-Fifths Park". Simmons and McDaniels rapped in front of Mizell at the park, and the three became friends. 110. 1981: Fortunately for them, Run’s older brother, Russell Simmons, had his foot in the music business, as the manager for rappers Kurtis Blow and Whodini. Russell made Run Kurtis Blow's DJ and helped him record the single “Street Kid,” but it went nowhere. Later that year, the friends decide to become a crew. 111. 1982: Russell agreed to help the new group record a single and get a record deal, but on one condition –McDaniels change his stage name, from “Easy D” to “D.M.C.” 112. 1983: Run DMC hit the scene with their debut 12-inch single for “It’s Like That,” with “Sucker MCs” as the B-side. The out-of-the-box success of these two songs was the beginning of a new era for hip-hop. 113. Run-D.M.C. exploded out of Hollis, changing popular culture in general. Not only was their sound different, so was their dress. Earlier rap stars fashioned their looks after the spangled superhero costumes of 1970s funk acts like Parliament-Funkadelic and Rick James, Run-DMC appeared in their signature bowler hats, black leather jackets, unlaced Adidas athletic shoes, and black denim pants, establishing the more casual look of hip urban youth. 114. They were the first rappers to have a gold album - Run-D.M.C. (1984). The first rap act to appear on MTV, becoming popular with the cable channel’s largely white audience with their fusion of hip-hop and guitar solos on hits such as “Rock Box” (1984) and a 1986 remake of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way”. 115. Although the group never officially disbanded, their recording and performing activities decreased significantly in the 1990s and in 2002 Jam Master Jay was fatally shot at a recording studio in Jamaica, Queens. 116. Run-DMC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 and received a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement in 2016. 117. Meanwhile, up the coast near Boston… In 1978, Robert Barisford Brown (@ 9 yrs old), Michael Lamont Bivins (@ 10 yrs old), and Ricardo "Ricky" Bell (@ 11 yrs old) started a vocal group. 118. Ricardo’s friend Ralph Edward Tresvant (@10 yrs old), and the nephew of the group’s manager and choreographer, Ronald Boyd DeVoe Jr. (@11 yrs old) soon joined. 119. Key Artists #2: New Edition 120. For a complete history go watch "The New Edition Story" on BET 121. But the short story is this...They all lived in the Orchard Park Projects in Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, and where heavily influenced by Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5. 122. They scored its big break in 1981, when they finished 2nd in a local talent show. They impressed the singer/producer Maurice Starr, and he brought the group to his studio the following day and started recording their debut album, Candy Girl. 123. Audio Clip 124. Question: These two groups are primarily responsible for hip-hop crossing over to rock and R&B, and therefore a wider and whiter audience. Has that been a good thing? 125. Movie Scene 126. Bill Cosby: Himself 127. After I Spy and before The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby left his own inimitable mark on the arena of stand-up comedy in this live concert showcasing his down-to-earth observations on the rigors and joys of family life. Cosby, using only a microphone and a chair, discusses his take on raising kids and the illogical nature of children and the futility of trying to argue with a child that in the end may be smarter than you. Notable highlights include Cosby's ruminations on the meaning of the all-purpose phrase "I don't know" to kids, and Cosby describing the effect raising children has on his wife Camille's mental state and the pitch of her voice. Containing the basis for the humor of his long-running situation comedy, Bill Cosby: Himself is a polished, occasionally insightful, and frequently hilarious night of comedy from one of the longtime masters of the form. --Robert Lane: https://www.quotes.net/movies/bill_cosby%3A_himself_1089 128. Born poor, the son of a sailor and a maid, he excelled at school, in both sport and academic study, becoming class president and winning a university scholarship while doing part-time jobs to help support his family. Giving all that up, he instantly became successful as a comedian, going on to be the first African American to star in a network TV series (I Spy), as well as the first to win an acting Emmy (three of them, plus one for variety shows and nine Grammies). By the time this performance was recorded, he had completed a doctorate in education, and was about to launch The Cosby Show, the decade's biggest sitcom, which would make him the best-paid entertainer in the world for two years running (1986 and 1987). He also sings and can play jazz guitar and drums. At 75, he's still extremely funny. - https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2012/jul/19/comedy-gold-bill-cosby-himself 129. Television Scene 130. Delirious (1983) is an American stand-up comedy television special directed by Bruce Gowers, written by and starring Eddie Murphy. The comedy became a TV Special for HBO released August 30, 1983.Eddie Murphy in stand-up before all the prosthetic flesh happened. For a generation of naughty schoolboys, this was the video to have; no parent-free gathering or playground conversation was complete without repeating some of Eddie’s profanity-strewn, impression-laden genius. The homophobic opening gambit and an alarmingly ignorant bit on AIDS are jaw-dropping, but there’s no denying Murphy’s supreme on-stage talent — when he’s on more timeless material (ice cream, cookouts, shoe-throwing mothers), few in the world were ever as funny as this. It’s easy to forget how funny Murphy's stand-up really was. Despite being a little dated in subject, this still slays. - https://www.empireonline.com/movies/eddie-murphy-delirious/review/ 131. “The most homophobic standup routine I’ve ever seen,” says another. “Can’t believe all the messed-up things he says about AIDS, including saying how you’ll catch AIDS from your girlfriend if she kisses her gay friend. 80s hateful prejudice in full force.” 132. Murphy apologized for the routine back in 1996, saying, “I deeply regret any pain all this has caused. Just like the rest of the world, I am more educated about AIDS in 1996 than I was in 1981. ”I know how serious an issue AIDS is the world over. I know that AIDS isn’t funny. It’s 1996 and I’m a lot smarter about AIDS now. I am not homophobic, and I am not anti-gay. My wife and I have donated both time and money to AIDS research. I’ve had people close to me die from the disease as well. I don’t know a person who hasn’t been touched in some way by this disease. Everybody knows somebody who is sick. Black people have been hit harder by this disease than any other group of people on the planet.” - https://www.queerty.com/eddie-murphys-homophobic-comedy-special-delirious-now-streaming-netflix-20161229 133. Question: Does he get a pass? 134. The A-Team 135. Four Vietnam vets, framed for a crime they didn't commit, help the innocent while on the run from the military. It’s THE A-TEAM 136. Led by master of disguise, Lieutenant Colonel John “Hannibal” Smith played by the gruff but loveable George Peppard, this group of falsely convicted commandos now work as fugitive mercenaries. Dirk Benedict is the team’s master manipulator and con man, Templeton “Face” Peck. Dwight Schultz plays the certifiable master aviator, Captain H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock. And you can’t spell The A-Team without Mr. T as master mechanic, Mohawked muscle man, and van driver (with a serious fear of flying), Bosco “B.A.” (“Bad Attitude”) Baracus. But enough jibba jabba. Tune in and watch the plan come together, fool! 137. The show ran for five seasons, with several minor cast changes along the way; the show's eventual decline was attributed to the constantly recycled and extremely formulaic plot. Attempts to win viewers back, by both changing the overall premise and having the A-Team overseen by a former antagonist, worked for only a short while. 138. Logic and credibility were usually ignored for the series' trademark over-the-top explosions, but the show never took itself particularly seriously, anyway: most of Hannibal's disguises were paper-thin, the villains were usually mostly-inept and somewhat one-dimensional, and the weapons that the Team cobbled together from miscellaneous parts were invariably more effective than the machine guns that the episode's villains used. 139. A big-screen version was released in June 2010, with Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley and Quinton Jackson as the team. The trailer can be seen on YouTube. Tropes go to the respective page. 140. Question: Does anybody care? 141. Webster 142. The post-retirement season is suddenly disrupted for football player George Papadapolis and his wife Katherine when Webster, the orphaned son of a former teammate, moves in. Laughter, and life lessons, in every episode. Webster was ABC's answer to the long-running NBC sitcom Diff'rent Strokes ... especially with its showcase star and even down to the basic concept (a young African American child being adopted by a white family). 143. The showcase star on Webster was Emmanuel Lewis, who played the title character. At 4-foot-3, the 12-year-old Lewis easily passed for 6 or 7 (the character's age at the start of the series in 1983), which was Webster's age when he was adopted by 144. Clark's production company. After the third season ended, Emmanuel Lewis Entertainment Enterprises, Inc. was established and became a third production company. This was actually part of an agreement between Karras and Clark, Paramount, and ABC, in which Emmanuel Lewis would get production credit alongside them for ABC to stop making the story lines be "all Webster, all the time. “The series ran from 1983-1987 on ABC before spending its final two first-run years in syndication. By the time the final first-run episode aired in 1989, Webster was 12 years old and getting ready to enter junior high school; in real life, Lewis had just turned 18. 145. Question: Why didn’t we riot in the streets? 146. Final Vote: Favorite pop culture event/item for 1983?
Today’s conversation with Garrett and Danielle is about the topic of Money and the important role it plays in your relationship. *This is a previously aired episode from April 2018. Every week married couple Danielle and Garrett J White share insights and perspectives from within their own lives regarding the following topics discussed each month: Week 1: Sex Week 2: Money Week 3: Parenting Week 4: Communication In This Week’s Podcast….MONEY Point #1: Men Must Produce When you make enough money to put your family into abundance, there’s a shift in the way that you see yourself as a man and a shift in the way you see your relationship. It also affects the way your wife sees you. Generally, women want to be taken care of. Even if we can produce, we still want our man to ‘be the man’ and take care of us. A man is sexier to a woman when he’s the one producing. QUESTION Does this ring true for you as a couple? Point #2: Money is a Tool Garrett: Inside of our relationships, money sits at the core. It allows you to do so much shit as a couple or it constrains you to do so much shit as a couple. We have friends who celebrate their success and use it as a tool to inspire other people to create more, and then we have other friends who simply hide it all and pretend like they’re broke. Danielle: There was a period of about five years where we were experiencing rapid growth and we disconnected ourselves from people. I had surface relationships and felt like I was kind of guarding myself. What I’ve come to realize now is that I can have relationships with everyone – it’s just a matter of me being comfortable with me. QUESTION Are you living in a scarcity mindset while being surrounded by your wealth? Point #3: You Must Leap In 2009 after I had lost everything, I was offered a job from a friend at a very crucial time for me when I didn’t have a lot of belief in myself. I was terrified as a husband and as a producer and had lost all confidence in myself. There came a pivotal moment when I realized my life was in the balance and something in my soul said, “You must fucking leap!” Danielle: When we were dating, I saw Garrett for who he was and who he could become. I knew there were great things in store for him. So when I saw him selling out, I was so upset because I knew what he was capable of doing and becoming so much more. QUESTION Where in your life have you settled? Point #4: Don’t Settle Garrett: One of the greatest gifts my wife has given to me about money is that she rode my ass about it. My wife helped me see that being driven by the money is not about being driven by the money. As you get better and better at making money as a man inside of marriage, inside of that place it forces you to become a new man. Danielle: I think that people play it safe in life in fear of failure. If I leap and I fall on my face, then there are consequences; but if I just stay in the safe zone, then I can just ride this out forever. If you’re listening to this and you’re feeling a stab in the heart to take action in your life, do it. QUESTION Where in your life are you feeling the call to take a leap of faith? Point #5: Team Work Garrett: There are a lot of you here who need to rise. Danielle and I work as a team to push each other. There are times she wants to settle into her little comfortable cocoon and then I kick her straight out of the cocoon, I rip it open and throw her off the cliff. And she does the same for me. Danielle: You can produce way more as a couple if you can get on the same page of experiencing more growth together. If you can take those experiences of who you are as a couple and make them work, two is better than one, at least in my experience for us. We push each other in that way. QUESTION What is your dance as a couple in the way you support each other’s growth? Communication Challenge: Have a conversation as a couple and allow yourself to collide and dream. Sit down and set a target of a game that you could create together. Who can you become as a couple economically? Who can you become as a producer individually or collectively? What would it require for you to become to pull that off? Date Night Topic: Give yourself some credit for where you are. Challenge yourself on your Date Night to have a conversation about possibility or collision. Either one of these paths will lead you to a new position and possibility inside of your life. Quote of the Week: “My money is a reflection of my ability to produce and create value in the marketplace. So I produce and I create more not for the target of having money, but rather we are in this place of a desire to become more, and inside of that we use money production as a way to accelerate that.” —Garrett J White “Be you at every level.” —Danielle K White

Danielle: You can produce way more as a couple if you can get on the same page of experiencing more growth together. If you can take those experiences of who you are as a couple and make them work, two is better than one, at least in my experience for us. We push each other in that way. QUESTION: What is your dance as a couple in the way you support each other's growth? Communication Challenge: Have a conversation as a couple and allow yourself to collide and dream. Sit down and set a target of a game that you could create together. Who can you become as a couple economically? Who can you become as a producer individually or collectively? What would it require for you to become to pull that off? Date Night Topic: Give yourself some credit for where you are. Challenge yourself on your Date Night to have a conversation about possibility or collision. Either one of these paths will lead you to a new position and possibility inside of your life. Quote of the Week: "The reason why money matters and the reason why business matters - the reason why continuing to grow and expand matters - is because as you get better and better at making money as a man inside of marriage, inside of that place it forces you to become a new man. I’m not the same human being I was a year ago. My money is a reflection of my ability to produce and create value in the marketplace. So I produce and I create more not for the target of having money, but rather we are in this place of a desire to become more, and inside of that we use money production as a way to accelerate that. --Garrett J White "Be you at every level." --Danielle K White

There has been a lot of "buzz" surrounding a New York Times article involving "teacher influencers," followed by controversy, some well deserved discussion on equity, then gossip, and finally jealousy. There was also a glossy Network TV special for "XQ Super Schools," and the Social Media circles went mad. Question: Does education have to be THIS political?
Genesis 32:24 NLT 'A man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break.' Alone and fearful, Jacob finds himself fighting for his life. So often the most intense battles I have endured have been through the night, alone, feeling isolated and in many ways wondering as to the purpose of my life, if not fearing for it. This is similar in many ways for without hope, life itself becomes a burden, apparently unendurable. In my youth I was supported by a naïve enthusiasm about life. I had not endured many setbacks. Life stretched out before me and through education, the encouragement of parents and an expansive self-confidence, I assumed all would be well in this best of all possible worlds. Having outwitted his twin, Jacob stood between a rock and a hard place. Having had his trust in humanity seriously challenged through his service of Laban, he faced the prospect of his brother taking his revenge as he returned home. Everything precious to him appeared to be under threat and his confidence in his ability to scheme his way out was minimal. I can remember discovering the harsh reality of competitiveness that undergirded Christian ministry. I was shocked at the misrepresentations made about those sharing the same Christian blood ties. My assumption that the Christian community by virtue of its shared faith and Lord was immune from the mores of wider society soon began to peel away. I was shocked to discover that taking the name of Christ was not the same as taking the form of Christ. When tragedy struck my own life, my confidence in myself and in my chosen beliefs drained away. Where once I was full of eager anticipation, now I awoke each morning an empty shell with little motivation or desire to rise and greet the day. The man I wrestled with was myself. It was also the persona of God as I had imagined him to be. So in my despair and caught up in a fight, I, like Jacob, demanded to know God’s name. This was because my experience was neither what I’d expected nor indeed wanted. I had to rediscover myself that I might mature in my faith and understanding. QUESTION: Does life feel as if you are wrestling with God? PRAYER: Lord, mould me and shape me into your image and no others.
Proverbs 1:33 NLT 'But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.' As a child I was not known for my obedience. It wasn’t that I was deliberately disobedient, rather, I failed to pay much attention as I was easily distracted. Indeed, I still am. As a teenager I became increasingly frustrated with the dead hand of bureaucracy. It is little wonder that following university, any job that invited me to join the legions of bureaucrats provoked me to run far away. Also perhaps little wonder that my friendship with God developed so slowly. I certainly devoured knowledge about God, yet in reality found little time or space to grow a relationship. So once MS crashed through the roof of our life, I had very few resources to manage my own inner turmoil. Listening means obedience. It’s recognising that I have limitations. God is only discovered by taking time for personal encounter. Making space for that time proves challenging if one is easily distracted and finds it difficult to pay attention. Yet, our personal frailties are not intended to rob us of God’s presence. One of the challenges I face is my own anxiety over my future. Recently the Teacher’s Pension office wrote to tell me that the small income that they passed onto me following Katey’s death was not, as I had assumed, a survivor pension, but concluded with my remarriage. Six years on from that date they informed me I owed them £23,000. Now, I don’t do savings, apart from my tax account that held £3,500. Anxiety over how I could deal with this woke me in the early hours and prevented me from sleeping. I recognised how shallow my confidence in God really was. Here was I frustrated because I couldn’t work out how to resolve it rather than benefiting from God’s invitation to live at ease, without dread of disaster. I learned that although I knew I had journeyed some distance, yet I still had some distance to go. Here I was investing useful listening time into fretting. No obvious answer has emerged, yet I am confident in God’s love for me, however this situation ultimately resolves itself. QUESTION: Does worry about the future rob you of knowing God in the present? PRAYER: Jesus, you said to your followers not to worry. Help me to cast all my cares on you.

I am so thankful, yes THANKFUL that you have decided to take the time to join me for another episode of the Retirement Answer Man. This show is a labor of love to me and I can’t express how wonderful it is for me to know that you’re finding value in what I’m sharing. On this episode we’re going to chat a bit about the markets. Man, they’re really stinky right now. But what does that really mean? While we can’t predict the future, there IS something we can do to help us get our bearings in such terrible markets, and I’m going to share that, some listener questions, and some thoughts about being happy in retirement, on this episode of the Retirement Answer Man. Are you signed up for my “Six Shot Saturday” email list? I’ve begun a new email list that features six simple, short, actionable tips you can use right away to help you better position yourself for retirement, plan your life, and live a better life. You’ll get those every Saturday, right in your email inbox, and I’m certain they’ll be a great asset to your life. You can find out how to get on that email list (and get some special content you can’t find anywhere else) by listening to this episode. Inflation is a buzzword we hear all the time, but do you know how it impacts you? It seems that ever since the 1970s the word “inflation” has been added to everyone’s vocabulary. The first thing we think of when we hear it is increases in the price of goods we purchase. But there’s more to inflation than just that, and on this episode of the Retirement Answer Man I’m going to walk you through what you should be thinking about when it comes to the issue of inflation and how you can better address your particular situation in light of it. What do you think, is the stock market going to stay this bad all year? The 2016 stock market has started out with a very loud “THUD.” It’s terrible, the worst returns we’ve seen in years. The financial analysts and talking heads on the news channels are talking the possibilities of a bunch of doom and gloom for the rest of the year as a result. But does a bad start like this necessarily mean that we’re going to have a terrible year in the markets? On this episode I’m going to look at some historical data about situations just like this to help you get out of the emotional response and into a data driven way of thinking about it. I think this will be very helpful. What kind of person do you want to be in retirement? You know, retirement has more to do than being off work and playing on the beach or at the golf course. It’s really about quality of life and one of the main things you need to consider when you think about that is the kind of person you are. This week I noticed some older pictures on my Facebook wall and it reminded me of some of the adventurous things I’ve done in years past. It got me thinking about the future and the person I want to be when I get there. I think this edition of my happy segment will give you a bit of inspiration for your retirement years, so be sure to listen. Welcome once again to The Retirement Answer Man show. I’m Roger Whitney, AKA the Retirement Answer Man. This episode of the show is one where I really get to live up to that name, because I’m answering two very practical listener questions covering how to figure out your “risk tolerance” in light of the different types of investment vehicles you have in your portfolio, AND whether or not it’s smart to get your money out of the financial system altogether by investing in real estate. As you can see, there’s some great stuff on this episode, so be sure you take the time to listen. What is “risk tolerance” and what’s wrong with the way we assess it? You may have heard the term “risk tolerance” before. If you’ve got any experience in the investments arena you surely have. But what does it mean? In short, it’s the amount of risk you’re willing to endure in order to potentially get greater returns on your investments. But I have to admit that I’ve got a pet peeve about this whole concept… and I’m not really sure it’s the best way to go about assessing what you should be investing in. Why? I’d love to fill you in, and I will on this episode. Should you be following the advice of those making market predictions? The very short answer is “no,” you shouldn’t. But do you know why? It’s almost every day that you hear somebody espousing another “new” way to invest that gives greater returns, do you know why it would be a mistake to follow the advice of these people? It’s because I have a quarter that has a better chance of determining the right investments for your money. Really, I do! If you’re confused, that’s OK, I’ll unpack all of that and more as I tell you why those making market predictions are not to be trusted, on this episode. Should you take money from your retirement accounts and put it into real estate investments? On this episode a listener admits that he’s very skeptical of the whole investment scene because of Madoff and other scandals. He simply doesn’t trust it anymore. Instead, he’s considering putting his money into real estate in the form of rentals. Is that a good idea? I’m not one to discourage real estate investing by any means, but I’m also not sure that taking all of his money out for that purpose is wise. And I’m not sure that skepticism is the best reason to do so, either. You can hear why I say both of those things, on this episode. Should you treat your various retirement accounts the same when it comes to risk assessment? One of my listeners today asks this great question. It’s great because it’s taking into consideration the things that should be considered. Think about it. You have varying investment vehicles that you use - IRAs, 401K, bonds, stocks, etc. Each of them has their own unique characteristics, including time frames and investment strategies. Doesn’t it make sense that you’d want to have a unique approach to your risk assessment in light of those kinds of characteristics? On this episode I’m going to walk you through the basics of how to think about those kinds of issues! OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE RETIREMENT ANSWER MAN [0:26] Roger’s thanks and introduction to this great episode. [1:20] How you can get Roger’s “6-shot Saturday” emails. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? SEGMENT [2:45] Today we define the term “risk tolerance.” [3:20] Questionnaires you may face when determining risk tolerance. [5:41] The problems Roger has with some of the “best practices” behind risk tolerance. HOT TOPIC SEGMENT [11:11] A confession from Roger. [12:05] Should we listen to market forecasts? Why not? [14:19] Forecasting isn’t about predicting the market, it’s about marketing the prediction. PRACTICAL PLANNING SEGMENT [17:26] QUESTION: Does it make sense for us to redirect some of our 401K money into rental properties? [26:55] QUESTION: Should I handle my risk tolerance allocations the same in all my various accounts? TODAY’S SMART SPRINT SEGMENT [31:35] A question to ask when you make a purchase anytime this next week. THE “BE HAPPY” SEGMENT [32:16] Some insight from a friend of Roger’s about the issue of happiness in spite of difficulties.
