We beg You rather to send the serpents among us than to let sin come among us. Oh! that we might have our eye always on the brazen serpent that heals all the bites of evil, but may we not look to sin nor love it. Let not the devices of Balaam and of Balak prevail against us, to lead Your people away from their purity. Let us not be defiled with false doctrine or with unholy living, but may we walk as the separated people of God and keep ourselves unspotted from the world.

This week I have a roundtable discussion with players from my D&D campaign, Blood of the Avatars, that recently ended. Brett, Craig, and Sam join me to discuss our experiences with D&D at high level, both as players and GM. We also talk about what it was like to bring a new player into a campaign toward the end, when the PCs are all high level. Finally, I talk a bit about my thoughts and strategies going into the final leg of the campaign, and how I prepared and planned for it. The players give their perceptions on how it all turned out. There are definitely things I could've done better, and we discuss that, so as I always say at the top of the show, you can learn from my mistakes, or at least things I could've done differently and/or better.Check out my sci-fi novel, Critical Balance.Have you read Critical Balance? With Ghost of Yōtei launching October 2nd, Nerd Legion is diving into the films and anime that inspired the game's haunted world. We begin with Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood (1957), a chilling reimagining of Macbeth that blends Noh theatre, samurai tragedy, and supernatural ghosts. In this episode, MonteCristo and DoA discuss:⚔️How Throne of Blood's fog, wind, and black-and-white style shaped Kurosawa Mode in Ghost of Tsushima (returning in Ghost of Yōtei)⚔️The fusion of Shakespearean tragedy with Japanese Noh theatre and its symbolism (Lady Asaji's mask-like stillness, the centipede banners, spinning horses)⚔️Kurosawa's legendary use of atmosphere and the unforgettable real-arrow death scene with Toshiro Mifune⚔️How the film's themes of cursed destiny and supernatural hauntings echo the mythic tone of Ghost of Yōtei

We begin with Izca's recovery, closely monitored by Norkin. For days, she felt the lingering presence of the King, his incomprehensible words still echoing within her. Eventually, aided by a mysterious guiding voice and the support of those around her, she regained enough clarity to understand that help had arrived. After a formal trial, it was determined that she posed no threat, having acted under an influence beyond her control. The party that apprehended her was praised and rewarded for their actions, and Izca was granted her freedom. At the council's request, the group was asked to provide a name to officially record their deeds.Flashing back three weeks before the elder brain battle, Bob and Dona emerge at Tradeshore from the soft spot and stumble upon a burning ship approaching the docks. Their attempt to rescue survivors fails, leaving them with a grim, unanswered message. Weeks later, a second vessel drifts into port, this time crewless and reeking of death. Below deck, a grotesque sculpture made of bodies is discovered—draped in yellow cloth and topped with a crowned head. A lifeless body, impaled by a ceremonial dagger, appears to be the person responsible. The grim discovery prompts another investigation and summons the party back to the small council.Back at the Witty Glaive, the party reunites over breakfast, reflecting on their time since the elder brain battle—working, training, shopping, and resting. They welcome their newest ally, Chan, and receive heartfelt gifts from Bob. Plans for the day are laid, including a stop at Zari's Haberdashery to collect enchanted items. Afterward, they meet again with the council, who request their help with disturbances in Midmount. Before preparing for that, they visit Izca to ensure her well-being. She assures them she's safe for now and intends to head for the mountains eventually. The chapter closes with a mysterious, fiery-haired figure speaking with Dona, revealing herself as Lore. After discussing her blood hunter abilities, they forge a contract, hinting at deeper implications to come. There's so much happening, and that's where we pick up…Find out what happens next in this episode of the Medusa's Cascade: Blood & BoozeTheme Music is written and performed by EfflorescenceMixed by Thomas Lapierre IIICheck out the show at themedusascascade.com
Greg responds to objections to his view that God's voice can't be missed, then he answers questions about thanking God for his goodness when something bad doesn't happen, defending penal substitutionary atonement, Iran and the Ezekiel 38 prophecy, and the nature of identity. Topics: Commentary: Challenges to Greg's view that God's voice can't be missed (00:00) Am I wrong to object when people say God is good when something bad almost happens but doesn't? (19:00) How should I respond to my deconstructing friend's objections to penal substitutionary atonement? (32:00) What are your thoughts on the theory that the Iran bombing in June was the start of the prophecy in Ezekiel 38? This week, as students in North America are returning to campus and settling into the rhythms of the fall semester, some of them are going to open their copies of Homer's epic poems of the Trojan War, the Iliad and Odyssey. They will read of the Trojan commander Hector's poignant farewell to his wife Andromache, of the Greek warrior Achilles' terrible rage, of Odysseus' long journey home, and of his wife in Ithaca, Penelope, who has endured his absence for some twenty years. For many students, these will be powerful stories—windows into an ancient world of honor and virtue and hubris—but for all that, distant stories. When read from the air-conditioned dorm room or plush campus library, the dust and blood and bronze of the Trojan War are abstract. But what happens when these same texts are read by young men and women who do know the weight of putting on armor, who have themselves kissed loved ones goodbye before departing for battle? Who must walk away from their own infant children in order to defend the country? What happens when the students who stand before Homer's text are not just dispassionately analyzing the soul of the warrior but are warriors themselves? Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver speaks in this episode with Ido Hevroni, a professor of literature at Shalem College in Jerusalem. For over a decade, Hevroni has guided Shalem students through Homer's epics, watching them grapple with these eternal questions of personal pride and public duty, private love and public defense, glory and sacrifice. But now, after October 7, his students find themselves in active combat, and he finds that it is Homer who is helping to explain their own experience back to themselves. And it is their experience in the tanks and tunnels of Gaza that is teaching them to read Homer with new eyes. Hevroni recently wrote about teaching the Odyssey in the pages of Mosaic, and that essay was published in honor of Ido's own teacher, Amy Apfel Kass, z”l, whose yortsayt on the fifth of Elul falls on the day that this conversation was originally broadcast. This discussion, too, is dedicated to her memory.

Send us a textDo you remember The Thing from 1982? We do, sort of. We remember that this movie was reviewed unfavorably by critics and audiences back in the day. Then it became a cult classic. We haven't seen it in a while, but we remember Kurt Russell trying to figure out who is human and who is the alien. We remember an abundance of gore and fantastic, practical effects. Blood, violence, and a tension that ramps up until the final act are what we remember and hope John Carpenter's The Thing still emboldens.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

This week, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker delivered an extraordinary takedown of President Trump over his deployment of the military in U.S. cities. Trump then exploded about Pritzker's impudence, calling the governor names and instructing him to bow down and beg for his “HELP” in fighting crime. Trump has threatened twice to occupy Chicago no matter what the city's residents and their elected representatives think about it, another window into his seething anger. In this standoff, Pritzker did something unusual: He communicated with his constituents from the heart, vowing to use all his power to protect them from Trump's authoritarian takeover. Rather than let Trump pretend he cares about crime, Pritzker cast Trump as the primary threat to his state's people. We talked to Brian Beutler, who has a great new piece on his substack, Off Message, taking stock of Pritzker's response. We discuss how Pritzker is shrewdly reading the moment in a way many Democrats are not, why Trump is vulnerable on crime, and what the punditry is getting so wrong about all of it.
