Adapting to Challenging Times In this insightful episode, Damon and Michael dive into how leaders and professionals can stay grounded and proactive during uncertain times. Damon previews an upcoming solo episode focused on managing adversity without falling into panic. Together, they analyze current trends in the job market, especially how compensation changes and layoffs are prompting many professionals to reconsider their career paths. They explore the power of continuous learning, the urgency of adaptability in today's fast-paced environment, and how leaders can build resilient, high-performing teams—even in tough seasons. From Athlete to EdTech Entrepreneur Damon Lembi shares his remarkable journey from being drafted by the Atlanta Braves to becoming the CEO of Learnit. After stepping away from professional sports, Damon started humbly as a receptionist at his family's company—proving that reinvention often starts with humility. His story underscores how the discipline and mindset from athletics can translate into entrepreneurial success. With Learnit now having upskilled over 2 million professionals, Damon reminds us that our past experiences are powerful assets in building the future we want. Dot-Com Boom Recollections Michael and Damon reflect on their experiences during the whirlwind of the dot-com era. Damon candidly discusses his unexpected rise to CEO after stepping in for a misaligned leader, while Michael shares stories from his time at comScore during both its meteoric rise and sudden market correction. Both offer behind-the-scenes insights into the volatile recruitment landscape of that time—when job changes were rapid, and stability was a rare commodity. It's a candid look at lessons learned from fast-paced growth and sudden market pivots. Marketing Strategy During Economic Downturns Should marketing budgets be cut in a downturn? Michael and Damon say absolutely not. They explore why companies that maintain or even increase their marketing efforts during lean times often emerge stronger and more visible. Damon also revisits his personal shift from a baseball career to the business world, offering a real-world example of how unexpected changes can spark new opportunities for personal and professional growth. Thriving in Economic Downturns Damon outlines his bold, counterintuitive playbook for thriving during economic turbulence—what he calls “possibility spotting.” From hiring top talent during recessions to acquiring competitors when others were retreating, he shares how Learnit stayed ahead while others hesitated. Damon emphasizes making smart, calculated bets—especially in areas like sales, product development, and marketing. His message is clear: Growth is possible, even when the world slows down. Adapting to Challenges in Business Using the metaphor of baseball trade deadlines, Michael and Damon explore the importance of recognizing opportunities in adversity. Michael emphasizes the need for strategic risk-taking and growth, while Damon reflects on his own business pivots—from overexpansion in 2000 to course correction in 2009. Their discussion reinforces a powerful message: long-term success requires a mix of perseverance, self-awareness, and the courage to evolve. AI for Small Business Advancement Damon and Michael explore how AI is becoming a game-changer for small businesses. Damon highlights how AI tools are now accessible for companies like Learnit, enabling them to streamline customer service, enhance marketing efforts, and even handle legal functions. Michael compares leveraging AI to fishing—reeling in customers through smarter, faster engagement. They agree: whether you're a startup or a legacy business, embracing AI is essential for growth and agility in today's landscape. The Learn It All Leader Damon opens up about his latest book, The Learn It All Leader, which draws from his time with Hall of Fame coaches, his leadership journey in business, and his desire to pass on lasting wisdom to the next generation. He shares compelling stories about leadership wins and missteps, offering practical takeaways for those looking to lead with purpose. Damon also invites listeners to his podcast, The Learn It All Podcast, and extends a generous offer—a free class on essential skills like emotional intelligence or conflict resolution for those who connect with him on LinkedIn. For nearly three decades, I've led Learnit, a global training company. In that time, we've upskilled over 1.8 million individuals in the workplace. Through this journey, I've gained insights into what helps organizations grow, how great leaders learn, and why learn-it-all companies outpace their competitors every time. Coming to business from a career in baseball, I bring an athlete's perspective on leadership and training to my informal mentoring of executives. I've distilled those hard-won insights into my bestselling book, The Learn-It-All Leader—Mindset, Traits, and Tools and keynotes on leadership, entrepreneurship, and life-long learning. Saw this post that helped me to wake up - along with my coffee - to remind me that I need to focus in on how I want my day to go!! It's from Kevin DeShazo (@KevinDeShazo) shares this gem: “Your future self will either bear the burden of your inconsistency today, or reap the rewards of your commitment today. You get to choose. Show up on purpose.” This hit me this morning (morning of this recording) and it really changed my perspective of the day for me. I was also listening to “The Daily Coach” podcast - latest episode HERE, where it was shared about the “rule of thirds” which is coming from an Olympic coach and it basically says that during your days of working towards something, you will have a roughly each a third of good days, average days and crappy days. All three of them are to remind you that you are going for something great and to not let whatever day you are having get in the way of success. Especially the crappy days - they are telling you the great thing you are going for, is not supposed to be easy - but it's worth it! I needed that reminder as well this morning. It's my choice as to how I will show up! (and I will show up!!) Thanks for listening. This week on World Ocean Radio we're discussing the "Mind Map of Blue Ocean Leadership,” a chart developed by a global constituency of business experts, graphed to show existing leadership design while suggesting changes that are different from conventional approaches, charted as a “mind map” intended to fix, clarify, and establish an effective process to get the job done. If the world response to the challenge of climate change is characterized as “too little, too late,” it would seem clear that the old "mind map" has failed, and that a new approach might be a valuable shift toward "more than enough, in time."World Ocean Radio: 5-minute weekly insights in ocean science, advocacy, education, global ocean issues, challenges, marine science, policy, and solutions. Aishwarya Iyer built one of the fastest-growing premium CPG brands by doing what many startups overlook: putting product integrity, brand trust, and strategic timing ahead of rapid retail expansion. In this episode, Aishwarya, the founder and CEO of admired pantry staples company Brightland, shares how discovering a major gap in the olive oil industry sparked the creation of her mission-driven, design-forward brand. She dives into her philosophy of disciplined growth, reveals why she turned down Whole Foods twice, and explains why building a lasting business starts with knowing your customer better than anyone else. Show notes: 0:25: Interview: Aishwarya Iyer, Founder & CEO, Brightland – Aishwarya draws parallels between her personal journey as a new mother and entrepreneur, and emphasizes the importance of belief and mindfulness in the growth of and success of Brightland. Aishwarya is candid about her early doubts, logistical missteps, and the pressure of launching Brightland, how she landed a small but impactful New York Times mention and her decision to turn down Whole Foods (twice). The conversation also delves into Brightland's brand strategy, where the beautiful, elevated packaging acts as a “Trojan Horse” to invite education and trial. She also talks about why Brightland launched a more accessible everyday line, inspired by brands like Ralph Lauren that successfully straddle luxury and mainstream markets. Aishwarya discusses how PR, storytelling, and thoughtful retail strategy have shaped Brightland's growth, and stresses the importance of product integrity over just aesthetics. She closes with advice on avoiding comparison and noise, encouraging entrepreneurs to periodically unplug from social media to reconnect with their vision and the reasons that they launched their companies. Welcome to the second episode of Becoming Unshakeable! If you've been a follower and fan of Leadership with Heart, you're in exactly the right place. From here on out, Becoming Unshakeable will be the new name of my show—and I can't wait to bring you invaluable insights on what it means to lead with clarity, compassion, and courage. When I began planning the very first guest episode of Becoming Unshakeable, I thought carefully about who could help bridge the journey from Leadership with Heart to this new season of resilience and self-leadership. The choice came quickly. My longtime friend and inspiring leader, Rich Gassen, was the perfect person to join me. Rich has spent more than a decade as a supervisor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and he has always impressed me with his steady commitment to growth, learning, and values-based leadership. His personal mantra, “show up and participate,” has guided him through every challenge, from a serious health scare to leading a major team relocation. What struck me most in our conversation was how Rich has never stopped being a learner. He constantly seeks out new knowledge, applies it to his work, and shares it generously with his team and colleagues. During our conversation, Rich opened up about what being unshakeable means to him. For him, it is about leaning on his values, staying grounded in creativity and curiosity, and never losing sight of the whole person he is leading. He reflected on how compassion and transparency shaped the way he guided his team through difficult times, and how active listening allowed him to support others in moments when life outside of work was weighing heavily. His approach to leadership is deeply human, rooted in the belief that progress matters more than perfection. Rich also spoke about what he had to unlearn on his leadership journey. Moving from a technical role into a supervisory position meant realizing that he didn't need to have all the answers. Instead, he learned to listen more, ask better questions, and empower his team to find solutions themselves. That shift not only helped him grow but created more resilient, capable people around him. What I love most about Rich's story is how authentic it is. He does not pretend to be perfect. Instead, he focuses on showing up every day, aligning with his values, and creating the conditions for others to thrive. That mindset is at the heart of what it means to be unshakeable.
We've all been there. You say something. You think it makes sense. But the reaction you get? Confused. Unmoved. Maybe even tuned out. Ugh. Communication isn't about what you say. It's about what the other person hears and, more importantly, how they feel and act because of it. If you're not getting the results you want from your conversations, whether in meetings, emails, presentations, or even casual exchanges, there's a reason. This week, I'm sharing 2 simple ways to instantly improve your communication skills. These aren't gimmicks or tricks. They're straightforward changes you can make right away to: ✅ Be clearer. ✅ Get buy-in faster. ✅ Avoid misinterpretations. ✅ Sound more thoughtful, credible, and composed. Found a very true statement from one of the best at putting out difference-making posts. Mindful Maven (@mindfulmaven_) shared this one that I found plenty of examples of the second part of the quote (sorry to say): “You'll never be criticized by someone who is doing more than you. You'll always be criticized by someone doing less. Remember that.” ~ Denzel Washington. Those that know how things are done correctly - with class, character, hard work, etc., will usually always encourage rather than criticize. Those that have no character and have a title, have a lot of money, have status, and all that, and they maybe gained it by lying, cheating, stealing, etc., they usually are the ones that criticize (and even make fun of, put others down, etc. I think all of us need to go back to looking to do things in our lives to tilt the playing field back to kindness, encouragement, compassion, etc. Go back to podcast episode #1648 - the Ripple Effect!! In this episode we are talking with Raphael McMaster about why it's so important to be proactive about our children's mental health—and how this early support helps them grow into caring, connected individuals. Instead of waiting for problems to escalate, we can build habits and environments that strengthen emotional well-being from a young age. At the same time, we can help children develop a collective consciousness Rafael McMaster is a creative director, artist, and youth mental health advocate who has dedicated his life to uplifting youth through a fresh approach to mindfulness and creativity. As the founder of Indivisible Arts, Rafael leads a transformative youth development nonprofit that equips young people with practical tools for emotional resilience and self-control. His unique blend of mindfulness, mentorship, and creativity has made a profound impact on youth across Los Angeles, particularly those facing adversity. After a successful creative agency career (including 5 years as a Creative Executive at Creative Artists Agency), Rafael shifted his focus from the creative industry to community impact. What began as a volunteer effort at his daughter's school evolved into a thriving nonprofit, a public gallery space, and an after-school program grounded in tools-based mental wellness and creative freedom. Alongside learning tools for mindfulness, youth get to explore a wide range of creative media, including everything from portraiture and sculpting to music production and 3-D design. It's practical, tactical leadership.I first experienced this through Vistage, surrounded by sharp minds from every industry—pest control to bakeries. And trust me, when nine people try to put your business out of business in real time, you learn fast what really matters. Here's my challenge to you:Form a red team.Pressure test your vulnerabilities. And emerge sharper, smarter, and more secure.Like if you're ready to think like a disruptor.Subscribe if you're committed to leveling up your leadership in Multifamily. For more engaging content, explore our offerings at the[https://www.multifamilycollective.com](https://www.multifamilycollective.com/) and the [https://www.multifamilymedianetwork.com](https://www.multifamilymedianetwork.com/)Join us to stay informed and inspired in the multifamily industry!

In this episode, I unpack the complexities of effective leadership through the lens of the well-known phrase, “Hire Slow, Fire Fast.” While I agree with the value of thoughtful, deliberate hiring, I challenge the conventional interpretation of Fire Fast as an immediate solution for underperformance. Instead, I advocate for a more responsible approach—one that prioritizes difficult conversations, meaningful feedback, and self-reflection on our role as leaders. Leadership, I argue, should be about developing talent and creating an environment of growth, not fear. I also highlight the importance of cultural fit in hiring and stress the need for thorough evaluation and support before making the decision to let someone go. Ultimately, I encourage leaders to slow down, take ownership of outcomes, and build a culture of accountability that empowers people to thrive.
Executive coach Michael King breaks down why being talented at your craft doesn't automatically make you good at running a business. He shares his framework for moving from reactive daily tasks to intentional vision-building, emphasizing that most creatives are thinking way too small about what they're building. Michael challenges listeners to create a "to-be list" focused on identity and impact rather than just grinding through endless to-dos. Key Takeaways Talent vs. Leadership are different skills - You can be amazing at video production but terrible at running a video business, and both require intentional development Start with identity, then vision, then structure - Before diving into tactics, get clear on who you are, what you want to build, and who you need on your team Create bandwidth for future thinking - You have to intentionally make time to work ON your business, not just IN it, even when you're swamped with client work Embrace being "good and different" - Stop comparing yourself to others and own what makes you uniquely valuable in the marketplace About Michael King Michael King is not just a coach — he's a builder of people, companies, and creative movements. With over a decade of executive insight, creative thinking, and relentless execution, King has launched full-scale leadership systems and founded anti-agencies that prioritize genuine service over industry norms. At the center of King's approach is a fundamental belief that strategy, simplicity, and systems unlock the best in people. This philosophy drives his work across multiple domains: coaching Fortune 500 executives, building platforms for founders, and speaking to teams and leaders around the globe. King is the creator of innovative frameworks like TEAMS and leads transformative experiences through Accelerator, an immersive strategic coaching experience designed to drive meaningful change. His reputation is built on delivering insight without fluff, transformation without ego, and strategic thinking that helps leaders grow what matters most. Whether working with C-suite executives or emerging entrepreneurs, King brings the same commitment to practical wisdom and results-driven strategies that have made him a sought-after voice in leadership development and organizational transformation. In this episode, I sit down with Donzel, whose journey takes us from the sun-soaked streets of Key West, Florida, to the locker rooms of Purdue University, and on through a 30-year corporate career leading international teams. We explore why he traded palm trees for the Midwest — a decision shaped by family ties, academic ambition, and the guiding hand of a high school coach with deep Purdue connections. Donzel shares how growing up surrounded by diverse cultures in Key West prepared him to lead in a complex, global world. Leadership That Meets You Where You Are Donzel tells a powerful story of nearly quitting his high school football team — and how Coach Freeman's flexible, heart-led leadership kept him in the game. That moment taught him the value of humility, accessibility, and investing in people. We talk about how those same qualities can transform workplaces, teams, and even entire communities. Making Your Destiny Happen Donzel's new book, Make Your Destiny Happen, began as a life plan he created in his twenties. Six months of writing turned into four years of editing, as he distilled decades of leadership experience from across the globe into a guide for others. His philosophy? Leadership done well creates ripples far beyond the office walls. Mentors in Unexpected Places From his great grandmother to a janitor who quietly shared investment wisdom, Donzel's life is a testament to finding mentors everywhere. We swap stories about the surprising people who've shaped our own journeys and how wisdom often shows up in the least expected ways. His book offers readers a roadmap to building a balanced life — one that honors both ambition and well-being. The Art and Grind of Creating We compare content creation to staging a Broadway production — the endless rewrites, the fine-tuning, and the moment you know it's ready. Donzel's hope is that his book will spark change and possibility for readers, and I couldn't agree more. Strong leadership is needed now more than ever, and his message delivers. Empowering Through Positive Change Donzel believes in leadership that inspires, not intimidates. His book is a call to action for anyone ready to take control of their life, redefine success, and lead with purpose. If it inspires even one person to take that step, he considers it a win. Where to Find Donzel You can explore more of Donzel's work through his website, his social channels, and his Make Your Destiny Happen Petite Podcast — short, impactful leadership lessons often inspired by his late father. And, of course, pick up your copy of Make Your Destiny Happen. Donzel Leggett is an accomplished senior executive with 32+ years of leadership experience driving business growth for Fortune 200 consumer products companies. Donzel's career reflects a demonstrated track record of leading transformational change on a global scale through strategic vision, planning and execution, and inspirational leadership with enterprise-wide initiatives that include optimizing operations and integrating M&A transactions in complex international business environments. Donzel earned a reputation as an inspirational unifier having built many strong collaborative cross-functional teams, across several geographies, cultures, and diverse backgrounds. Donzel is also a community leader, a member of several nonprofit and advisory boards, and is board chair at two organizations. Donzel has been widely recognized as one of the most inspirational leaders within the many organizations in which he has been a part of. He is continually contacted for career and leadership advice and development and has coached and mentored thousands of people across the globe. The August 25th Monday Minute is here! Listen in for a minute of encouragement and thoughts that didn't make it into the weekly sermon from Pastor Rusty. Tune in now!
I saw this post and of course I've seen it before, but this time it's voice was a little louder when I came across it. This came from Gratitude HQ (@gratefuledu64) - “The ‘ripple effect' means that #KindnessMatters ! A single act of kindness, like offering help to someone, can inspire that person to be kind to others, creating a chain of positive interactions. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!” This thought that all of us can tap into goes along with this post - “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” ~ Mother Teresa. In a world where action is needed to help others and make a difference with all of the injustices going on around us, we all can “cast a stone” of kindness, empathy, love, speaking up, reaching out to others to share thoughts and ideas, along with making sure we keep investing in ourselves to be our best selves. Just like the previous podcast - if we keep “our lamps lit”, it helps our journey and also the journeys of those around us. Making a difference for ourselves and others, should be something we all strive for. Thanks for listening. It comes from another one from my “All Star” lineup starters, Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) reminds us of this important life point: “Your laziness is disrespectful for the people who believe in you.” Looking back throughout my life, dang, I've been so guilty of this so often.
