In this court, we hear the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth - about you. Everyone desperately wants to think of himself as a "good person," and many convince themselves that the delusion is real. One day, at the Great White Throne Judgment, those folks will see themselves as God sees them: not as "mostly good, with some minor flaws," but as stained, ruined, sinful. Jim has called that day "Payday," and we've been learning about it in Revelation 20. Over the last two decades the number of places we could - in theory - be exposed to new music has increased exponentially. We cover how Warriors absorbed injuries to Mitchell Barnett and Rocco Berry, the Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad clinic and Demitric Vaimauga's impact as well as many more wrinkles. NZ Warriors also had another win in NSW Cup and a Jersey Flegg Cup win to make it three wins vs Rabbitohs last weekend. Then we roll through some New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga players to watch out for. Football Ferns and All Whites are in action, plus the NZ U20 team so there is lots of kiwi football to discuss. We also chat through Alyssa Whinham's mahi for Sydney Olympic and the latest news for Auckland FC/Wellington Phoenix. What do you mean by, "Hell?" Hell is the place you don't want to go when you die. That definition will work fine for most conversations. It's the place of anguish and torment. But Hades (or the lower compartment of Hades) is not the same place as the Lake of Fire, and it's worth thinking about how and why those are different. We're in the middle of a discussion about the Great White Throne Judgment in Revelation 20. Here's Pastor Jim with Part 2 of his message, Payday. In a world drowning in plastic waste, Jon Reed of Compostic is pioneering a revolutionary approach to everyday kitchen products. Through sheer determination and innovative thinking, Jon transformed a personal frustration with single-use plastics into a thriving business that now sits on the shelves of major US retailers like Whole Foods and Target. His home compostable cling film and kitchen bags represent more than just a product - they're a bold challenge to the traditional plastics industry. He has expanded Compostic from a small New Zealand startup to a brand distributed across thousands of stores. 2025 has thrown a few tariff-shaped curveballs at founders like Jon - and the going has been tough - but he's still dead-set on his goal of banishing single-use plastic. How is he navigating the chaos of today's international trade landscape? Listen now to find out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news the Americans seem to be making a concerted effort to adopt a stagflation policy. The USD is falling toward a three year low, gold is rising again, as are US benchmark interest rates. But first, the week ahead will feature central bank rate decisions from Canada (expect a hold at 2.75%), the ECB (-25 bps to 2.15%) and India (-25 bps to 5.75%). And the week will end with the US non-farm payrolls report (+130,000 and extending the ho-hum trend). But the week will be dominated by factory and service sector PMIs, closely watched for the consequences of trade war activity. More damage came from the US over the weekend with the doubling of steel tariffs, from 25% to 50%. These are certain to make the US steel industry even less competitive globally, embedding higher producer costs for American factories and higher prices for its customers. We can see that from the latest ISM factory PMI for May, where a small contraction is now taking place, and the cost pressures are still very high. The final S&P/Markit May factory PMI recorded the most cost pressure since 2022, but a tiny expansion in this one.China released its official PMIs over the weekend, with the factory version contracting much less, and their services little-changed in a tiny expansion. Inflation pressures aren't evident here. The US trade pressure may be preventing China's economy from growing much but it isn't pushing it into a contraction. And so far, Beijing has resisted Trump's request for a phone call with Xi.And there were May PMIs out for Japan (contracting less), Canada,(holding a sharp contraction) Taiwan (contracting less), Korea (small contraction, but stable) Singapore (stable small contraction) and Australia (stable but expanding a bit less) on Monday. So this set isn't yet showing much change, but the trade war does seem to be embedding stagnation. Inflation doesn't seem to be much of a problem here, it is only the US that is getting them both.Stagnation without inflation does allow central banks to try a rate cut remedy - a remedy not available to the Americans. In China they are applying both monetary (lower rates) and fiscal policies (more spending) to stabilise their situation. Beijing is spending big to counter the downward pressure on its economy. As a result, the country's broad fiscal deficit expanded at its quickest clip since 2023 in the first four months of 2025, reaching a -¥2.7 tln (-NZ$630 bln) deficit in the period, almost 60% more than in the same period in 2024.They need all of that because it is pretty clear their real estate sector slump isn't anywhere near over yet, despite all the official help for it.We should also note that it is a holiday in China today, for Dragon Boat Festival.India reported Q1-2025 GDP outcomes, claiming a heady expansion of +7.4% from a year earlier, far better than the +6.7% expected and the +6.4% expansion in Q4-2024. This expansion was led by both the construction sector, and consumer spending. And Canada also reported an expanding economy in Q1-2025, gaining +0.5% in the quarter to be +2.2% higher for the year. Both these indicators of economic activity are better than analysts had expected. Of course these are only of historical interest because they pre-date the tariff-war actions of the US that started in April.Back in the US, the final University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey recovered its early month drop in the second half of the month, ending similar to the April level. The pause in the tariff war and the hope this would ease inflation pressures during the survey period was said to be behind the mood change. Still, this level is very pessimistic, -24% lower than year-ago levels. In Australia, job ad growth has turned into a decline, with the number of job ads dropping -1.2% in May from April, when they fell a downwardly revised -0.3%. Year on year they are down -5.7% although they remained +14% higher than pre-pandemic levels. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.46%, and up +6 bps from Friday. The price of gold will start today at US$3,375/oz, and up +US$86 from yesterday.Oil prices are up +US$2 in the US at just under US$63/bbl and the international Brent price is just under US$65/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is now at 60.2 USc, a +50 bps rise from yesterday at this time. Against the Aussie we are up +20 bps at just on 92.9 AUc. Against the euro we are up +10 bps at 52.7 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just on 68.2 and up +30 bps from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$104,272 and down -0.9% from yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been modest at just on +/-1.0%.You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.
Wall Street closed mixed on Friday but posted strong gains across the key indices for the month of May as investors shrugged off Trump's tariff turmoil and global trade uncertainty to send equities higher for the month. The S&P500 closed flat on Friday but gained 6.2% for the month, the Dow Jones rose 0.13% on Friday and 3.9% for the month, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq ended the day down 0.32% but posted a 9.6% surge for the month of May.On Friday a trade deal between the U.S. and UK was reached, boosting investor optimism that more deals of this kind can be done.Across the European region on Friday, markets closed mostly higher on the UK trade deal and as investors welcomed the potential blocking of his tariffs on certain regions. The STOXX600 rose 0.1%, Germany's DAX added 0.3%, the French CAC fell 0.36%, and, in the UK, the FTSE100 ended the day up 0.64%.Across the Asia region on Friday markets closed mostly lower as the appeals court in the U.S. allowed majority of Trump's tariffs to be re-instated. Japan's Nikkei fell 1.22%, China's CSI index lost 0.48%, South Korea's Kospi index declined 0.84%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended the day down 1.2%.Locally on Friday, the ASX200 posted a 0.3% gain despite Trump's tariff-related volatility weighing on the key index early in the session. Investors again moved into defensive and safe-haven stocks like the banks and staples, while shifting out of riskier stocks like tech on Friday as uncertainty arose again on the tariffs front. The local market posted a second straight monthly gain for the month of May despite heightened volatility and macro uncertainty. On Friday morning it was announced that a federal appeals court temporarily upheld many of President Trump's tariffs on China and other countries, pausing a lower court ruling that had challenged them. This move allows the tariffs to remain in place while the court reviews the case and considers the administration's request for more time. The appeal success came not even 12-hours after a federal court announced a blockage of the tariffs amid overuse of Presidential power. This week will be an interesting time for tariffs as the appeals process unfolds, but we are no closer to clarity on exactly what tariffs are allowed to remain and the implications on our locally listed companies.Retail sales fell by 0.1%, missing the forecasted 0.3% increase, with warmer weather contributing to reduced clothing purchases. Clothing and department store spend were the key contributors to the weaker-than-expected reading for April, while cafes and food related spend was still on the rise. Surprisingly, niche retailers like Accent Group and Universal Stores still rallied on Friday despite the retail spend figure being released. In data out this week, Q1 2025 GDP figures are also expected to show a slowdown in growth to 0.2%, down from 0.6% in Q4 2024, primarily due to weaker household consumption. Markets are now factoring in a 73% chance of a rate cut out of the RBA when it next meets in July, up from the 59% chance expected prior to the retail sales data being released. What to watch today:On the commodities front this morning, oil is trading 0.25% lower at US$60.79/barrel, gold is 0.9% lower at US$3288.58/ounce and iron ore is down 0.15% at U.S.$99.12/tonne.The Aussie dollar has weakened against the greenback to buy 64.37 U.S. cents, 92.57 Japanese yen, 47.76 British pence and 1 New Zealand dollar and 8 cents.Ahead of Monday's trading session here in Australia the SPI futures are anticipating the ASX will open the first trading session of June up 0.09%.Trading ideas:Bell Potter has decreased the 12-month price target on IPD Group (ASX:IPG) from $4.60 to $4.10 and maintain a buy rating on the leading Australian distributor of electrical equipment and industrial digital technologies, following the company provid

From soggy French fries in backpacks to drama-fueled middle school breakups, this episode offers an unfiltered look at the wild things kids say and do, no matter their age. The teachers compare notes on everything from hygiene horror stories and awkward parent-teacher conferences to fire drills gone wrong and the stress of standardized testing (including a literal chicken nugget fire that set off alarms during state exams). They also explore the stark contrast between innocent kindergartners who still believe their teachers sleep at school and hormonal middle schoolers who vape, gossip, and push every boundary. Despite the differences, one truth rings loud and clear: kids of all ages are unpredictable, hilarious, and in desperate need of patient, passionate educators. Bonus laughs come with discussions about students' strange behavior, TMI stories, and the shared trauma of teacher duty—especially during car rider lines and state testing. They wrap with a hilarious game idea: Was it Kindergarten or Middle School? (Spoiler: it could be both.) Teachers, parents, and anyone who needs a good laugh about the reality of the classroom. Robert is a Chartered Accountant and a Master in Mineral Economics, where he began his career as a mining auditor and consultant at EY, before moving on and becoming a founding member of two successful mining ventures. He’s been at the helm as CEO of RUA Gold for nearly 18 months and gives us an update on the company, update on New Zealand as a mining jurisdiction, how they work with the local communities, what factors influence the company's strategic decisions, and the use of AI in exploration. KEY TAKEAWAYS New Zealand's Mining Landscape: The new political party in New Zealand has implemented a fast-track permitting process, allowing mines to be permitted in just six months, significantly reducing the bureaucratic hurdles that previously existed. Rua Gold has successfully acquired 95% of the Reefton gold district, which is rich in historic high-grade gold deposits. Recent drilling results have shown promising high-grade intercepts, indicating strong potential for future mining operations. Community Engagement: Rua Gold actively engages with local Maori groups and communities, fostering a collaborative relationship. The company provides updates and seeks feedback, emphasising a partnership approach rather than a confrontational one. Use of AI in Exploration: The company utilises AI technology, specifically a tool called Verify AI, to analyze large datasets and identify high-potential drilling targets. This approach enhances efficiency in exploration by focusing resources on the most promising areas. The junior mining sector faces significant challenges in securing funding, despite high gold prices. The need for continuous capital raises and the difficulty in attracting investment highlight the complexities of operating in this space. BEST MOMENTS "The way that we're going to help mining in New Zealand is actually just cut the red tape and get permitting done quicker." "We have 95% of the tenements there, and now we're uncovering the rest of that district." "Antimony is really interesting in the sense that it is the most scarce critical mineral of critical minerals." "I think the biggest factor for me is can you make this into a business?" In this episode of the show, Binksy, Raj, Baldy and Stu discuss an eventful couple of weeks, which have seen RCB win their way to the IPL final, England demolish Zimbabwe, Karun Nair strengthen his case for a Test recall, Shubman Gill named India Test captain and Copilot names its favourite podcast host. We start by talking about IPL 2025's most recent game, which saw the Mumbai Indians advance, ending Gujarat Titans' season in the process. Sai Sudharsan was brilliant once again, but ultimately it was another stunning delivery from Jasprit Bumrah that turned the match. We also discuss Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first appearance in a final since 2016, with Josh Hazlewood and Virat Kohli leading the way with ball and bat respectively. But will they face Mumbai or the Punjab Kings in the big dance? Next we head to England to discuss their recent victory against Zimbabwe. Was it the perfect way to start the summer? Is Shoaib Bashir the answer? Is there a way in for Jacob Bethell after Ollie Pope's huge hundred? And how many references can we make to songs by Sam Cook? India named their Test squad to face England, and it is filled with stars but has a very new era feel to it thanks to the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Karun Nair's made a strong case for inclusion against the Lions, Sai Sudharsan's New Zealand-based fan club is growing and Shubman Gill has been named captain. To round out the show, there's brief mention of the World Test Championship Final build up (full preview coming next week) and the Black Caps' coaching search, which looks set to be finalised very soon. We'll be back in your feed next week to review the IPL final, preview the WTC and any other cricket news that catches our eyes. What if you could escape the endless news cycle, afford healthcare without a second mortgage, and actually use your vacation days without guilt? Welcome to "Leaving America," the limited series where we're diving into why a record 40% of Americans are now considering life beyond US borders, why so many are actually taking the leap, where to go, and how to get there. This isn't just daydreaming anymore. From Mexico granting 11,000+ residencies to Americans in 2022 to Portugal's exploding expat communities, the exodus is real. But why now? What's changed to make millions reconsider what was once unthinkable? In this first episode, we're taking you inside the political exhaustion driving many to seek more stable democracies, where election cycles don't feel like existential threats. You'll hear shocking financial comparisons – like trading a $900,000 Los Angeles home for a $200,000 Portuguese villa, or swapping a $3,500 New York apartment for a $500 Mexican casa. And the healthcare reality? That $18,865 American childbirth versus virtually free delivery in countries with universal coverage speaks volumes.Through conversations with immigration attorneys, tax experts, and Americans who've already made the move, we examine the stark differences in work culture, community connection, and overall quality of life. As one expat puts it: "It's the best opportunity to reinvent yourself outside the Witness Protection Program."But we don't sugarcoat the challenges either – from navigating visa requirements to understanding that yes, the IRS still wants its cut no matter where you live. This isn't Emily in Paris; it's real life, just somewhere else.Whether you're seriously planning your escape or just curious about what's driving this modern American migration, subscribe now to explore whether leaving might actually be the most patriotic thing you could do – voting with your feet for the life you deserve.Featuring:Karen McCannDaniel Tostado Matt WilsonAdrian LeedsAaron MartinTim LeffelXanthe and Dana Heather MasonDavid Lesperance -------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

The Final Judgment. In our system of justice, we officially don't know whether you're guilty or innocent, until after the trial and verdict. And sometimes we don't really know whether you're guilty or innocent, even after that! In God's system, those who are righteous by faith have already been judged in our Representative. There's another trial awaiting those who are trusting in their own merits. It's the last thing that happens before God remakes the world: the Great White Throne judgment. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITHave you ever wondered if there are limits to what you can name your child? Dive into today's episode where we explore Japan's fascinating new law banning "kirakira" (shiny or glittery) baby names like Pikachu, Devil, Nike, and even Elsa! The Japanese government now gives local authorities power to reject names deemed too outrageous or difficult to pronounce, all to prevent potential negative impacts on children's futures. The origin of this naming controversy dates back to 1994 when one couple sparked national outrage by naming their son "Akuma" (meaning devil). Despite the father's defense that "it is the best possible name," public backlash eventually forced a name change. This case launched a decades-long effort to regulate creative naming practices in Japan, similar to restrictions already in place in countries like New Zealand. We also discuss former CNN journalist Chris Cillizza's peculiar claim of Tesla "vandalism" that turned out to be nothing more than a colorful note taped to his car reading "Musk is a Nazi." Cillizza expressed surprise that it wasn't a "MAGA person" behind the incident, challenging his own preconceptions about political divisions. Is this legitimate concern or possibly staged for attention in our increasingly polarized media landscape? The episode wraps up with a thoughtful question about our daily media consumption habits: What do you listen to during your commute? Apologies, recording started late due to technical issues. Atomic Habits by James Clear was discussed in relation to the spiritual path by Ayya Karunika at the book club on Saturday, 24th May 2025. Ayya explored how the concept of the “aggregation of marginal gains” (p. 13) can be used to enhance our daily practice. She offered a brief yet insightful overview of the four laws of behavior change (pp. 43–55), showing how they can support the cultivation of wholesome habits while helping us abandon unwholesome ones. She also introduced practical strategies such as habit stacking (pp. 72–79) as effective methods for integrating the Buddha's teachings into daily routine. In addition, she explained in detail how to apply the noble eightfold path in daily life and discussed the importance of focusing on systems rather than goals (pp. 23–28) in order to achieve better results in meditation and to strengthen overall progress on the spiritual path. Bhikkhuni Ayya Kārunikā is currently the senior resident monastic at Santi Forest Monastery, NSW, Australia and the spiritual director for New Zealand Bhikkhuni Sangha Trust, Hamilton. She has been in monastic life for over 14 years and she received her full ordination as a bhikkhunī in 2014 at Dhammasara Nuns monastery in Western Australia where she lived and trained for over a decade with Ajahn Hāsapaññā. She has been a student of Ajahn Brahm and Ajahn Brahmali for over 2 decades. Ayya Kārunikā is able to articulate the Buddhist teachings in a way that is practical and comprehensible to people of all ages and has experience in conducting retreats for both adults and youth. While she has a PhD in Microbiology and worked as a scientist, she has also been the building project manager for the construction of the Dhammasara Nuns Monastery main building complex and has worked with many volunteers over the years. Ayya Kārunikā was born in Sri Lanka but has been living and working in Australia for over 2 decades. She has a passion to share her experience and knowledge and loves working with people and also doing creative projects. She is dedicated to supporting the growth of Bhikkhunis around the world and is currently involved in projects to support the establishment of places for Bhikkhunis in Theravada forest tradition in Australia, New Zealand, Poland and Sri Lanka. Tommy and Ben are on the Trump corruption beat, including Vietnam's fast-tracking of a Trump golf project for favorable treatment, the administration pushing Elon Musk's Starlink on foreign countries, the president's grotesque dinner for buyers of his memecoin, and Cory Booker's embarrassing vote for Charles Kushner to be ambassador to France. Additionally, they talk about the reduction of National Security Council staff and how its operations are changing for the worse under Trump and the administration's hostility to international students. Also discussed: the tragic killing of two Israeli embassy workers in Washington, Israel's widely denounced new method of distributing aid in Gaza, Putin's ongoing humiliation of Trump, North Korea's failed battleship launch, Japan's rice crisis and how a joke cost a government minister his job, and the crucial role a biscuit tin plays in New Zealand politics. Finally, Tommy speaks with Representative Jim Himes, ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, about the dangers of politicizing intelligence, how the war in Gaza might be fueling terrorism, and more.
At this moment Jim and Amos talk about what would go down in New Zealand if they had their own January 6th.
