If you've enjoyed Talking to Teens, we'd love if you could leave us a five-star rating, and if you have time, a review! Jenny Anderson and Rebecca Winthrop, authors of The Disengaged Teen, join us to discuss their insights on teenage disengagement and share strategies to foster better learning, emotional well-being, and overall development in teenagers. When it comes to our teens' education, many of us attempt to walk a tightrope, balancing between overly optimistic perceptions and stark realities. As parents, we often perceive our teens as more engaged in learning than they truly are. What we might not realize is that many teenagers experience varying levels of disengagement during their educational journey, which can affect their overall growth and happiness. Understanding these dynamics within our children can drastically change our approach and thereby foster better communication and support. In this episode, we explore the science of teenage disengagement with Jenny Anderson and Rebecca Winthrop, the authors of The Disengaged Teen: Helping Kids Learn Better, Feel Better, and Live Better. Jenny, an award-winning journalist, and Rebecca, a senior fellow at Brookings and professor at Georgetown University, come together to bring attention to the various ways teens engage with school and learning. Through research and extensive interviews, they've identified different modes of learning engagement that teens experience: Resistor, Passenger, Achiever, and Explorer modes. Their framework serves as a tool to help us recognize and support our teens based on their unique engagement level. The authors explain how crucial it is to tailor our approach to these modes, especially as teenage learning engagement can directly impact their emotional well-being and future success. Jenny and Rebecca provide insightful observations, such as why boys might be more prone to being in Passenger mode and how fostering agency is key to shifting them into Explorer mode.Understanding the Four ModesJenny and Rebecca delve deep into the characteristics of each mode. They urge parents to consider intentional questions beyond the simple "How was your day?"–questions that encourage teens to express more than routine responses. They also stress the importance of recognizing early signs of disengagement, especially when children are content with coasting and not pushing themselves to explore or challenge what they know.Achiever mode might initially sound ideal, with teens appearing diligent and high-performing, but the conversation reveals a hidden downside. Unhappiness in Achiever mode—an inability to cope with failure and a fixation on perfectionism—can lead to mental health challenges. Encouraging Curiosity and AgencyThe authors enlighten us about the importance of curiosity and the role of perceived agency in encouraging teens to shift from Passenger or Achiever modes into the coveted Explorer mode. Rather than telling teenagers what to pursue, parents are encouraged to notice their children's interests and support them, regardless of whether it aligns with traditional goals, such as college admissions.Jenny and Rebecca also emphasize the importance of giving teens free time to rest their minds and explore creative unconventional thought. They discuss how moments of unstructured time foster creativity and lead to "Transcendent Thinking," a deeper level of cognitive engagement that comes from meaningful, self-driven inquiry.Breaking the Nagging-Procrastination CycleMany parents find themselves trapped in a cycle of nagging and procrastination, striving to get their children to complete their tasks. Jenny and Rebecca suggest practical methods to help break this cycle by prompting kids to make their own plans and holding them accountable to those plans—ultimately encouraging them to take responsibility for their learning. In the Episode...Our conversation with Jenny and Rebecca reveals critical insights into teenage learning engagement. Beyond the topics discussed, we also delve into:The impact of social expectations on teenage learningHow parental expectations can inadvertently contribute to perfectionismThe benefits of redefining success for our kidsSpecific strategies for helping teens open up about their educational experiencesFeeling equipped to tackle teenage disengagement? “Authenticity is about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen.” – Dr. Brené Brown, The Gifts of ImperfectionWhat if the secret to building resilience, authenticity, and connection was allowing yourself to be vulnerable? In this episode of Love & Learn, we dive deeper into Brené Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection by focusing on three essential guideposts for wholehearted living: cultivating authenticity, practicing self-compassion, and building resilience. These practices allow us to let go of the exhausting need to fit in, be perfect, and avoid vulnerability. In this episode, we'll uncover:How authenticity is a daily practice of letting go of what people thinkWhy self-compassion is the antidote to perfectionismThe power of resilience and how embracing vulnerability leads to deeper connection and joyKEY TAKEAWAYS:1. Authenticity is a Daily Practice: Cultivating authenticity requires us to show up as our true selves and let go of the need for approval. Dr. Brené Brown reminds us that being authentic isn't about being perfect—it's about being real. The courage to be vulnerable and set boundaries helps us nurture genuine connections and foster a sense of belonging.2. Perfectionism Hinders Success and Growth: Research shows that perfectionism often leads to anxiety, depression, and missed opportunities. It paralyzes us from taking risks or following our dreams. Perfectionism keeps us trapped, driven by the fear of judgment, blame, and shame. Instead of striving for perfection, practicing self-compassion little by little, adds up and helps us opens up space for real progress and joy in life. 3. Resilience Flourishes Through Vulnerability and Connection: True resilience comes from embracing the full range of human emotions, rather than numbing pain or discomfort. By allowing ourselves to be vulnerable and staying connected to a greater sense of purpose, we open the door to joy, love, and deeper meaning in life. Spirituality reminds us of our interconnectedness and helps combat feelings of fear, hopelessness, and disconnection, shining light from within during dark times.Remember: Perfectionism isn't a shield; it's a weight that holds you back. By cultivating authenticity, self-compassion, and resilience, you unlock the freedom to live a more fulfilling and joyful life.Tune in and join us as we explore how these practices can transform your life.ALL CONCEPTS FROM THE GIFTS OF IMPERFECTIONLetting Go of Living from a Place of UNWORTHINESSLetting Go of PERFECTIONISM, PEOPLE-PLEASING, and NumbingCONNECT WITH DR. Episode #3 // If you want your organisation to deliver outstanding results, as a leader you must adopt a mantra of “excellence over perfection”. In this episode we uncover why perfectionism can be debilitating for an organisation, and how your people will respond to the goal of delivering excellence. Many of you would be familiar with the Pareto Principle (the 80/20 rule). However, no matter how much we believe it, driving a culture of excellence through your organisation can be difficult. In the context of increasingly high expectations from customers, boards, shareholders, investors, and executive teams, many leaders are overcome with a quest for perfect outcomes, preventing their people from producing the excellent work that moves an organisation forward. This is one of our favourite topics, because it can almost immediately lift the results that your organisation is able to achieve, even without changing anything else! Today we’ll cover:How does perfectionism work against you personally, and simultaneously demotivate your team? Why do some people intuitively choose perfection over excellence? Hint: Most of these are subconscious choices but make so much sense when you’re aware of themA lesson that Zoolander can teach us about perfectionismThe 5 benefits of developing a culture of excellence over perfection (these will get your head around how it will make your team work significantly better overall)A story from my own experience of being a perfectionist without even realising it, and the negative effect this had on my teamThe 6 key strategies that you can implement TODAY to engender a culture of excellence - these are available to download belowI hope this episode gives you some great tips on how to create a culture of excellence over perfection in your team, or at the very least, provoke some self reflection on the impact your pursuit of perfection has on your team’s output and attitude.I strongly encourage you to download the worksheet and pick a few of your favourite points to implement with your team immediately.I’d love to know how you go with this, so as always, if you’ve found this useful, head over to my LinkedIn page and send me a direct message. If you’re loving the podcast, please subscribe and leave a rating, so that we can reach more leaders like you!
