This week, Samantha talks with founder of DC Fempreneur (DC Fem), Lisa Shapiro about what DC Fem means to her and how it has helped her not just professionally, but personally as well.  Lisa set out on her entrepreneurial journey when she gave up her regular corporate job to pursue something that she felt a need for.  She created a space where entrepreneurial women could form a community to help each other grow and to support one another.Lisa understands that what she is doing now is in direct response to her past.  She received two degrees in psychology and has put them to good use in understanding her story and in her conversations about women's empowerment.  These conversations tend to bring up conversations about her own experiences.  Understanding our past experiences and peeling back the layers help us to fully understand our current circumstances, no matter what they are. When Lisa created DC Fem over two years ago, she didn’t want to do it.  She had to be forced.  But, she knew that deep down, she was meant to do something different from what she was doing at the time.  She came to realize that entrepreneurs struggle on a daily basis to understand who they are and what they’re doing.  Still, on the outside, they come across as very sharp and put-together, which made her confidence take a hit.  This is why the "comparison trap" has come to be a daily conversation for Lisa.  She understands that other people have different voices and opinions, and that's ok.Even still, Lisa has her own “internal tapes” that play that reflect less than confident thought.  One of the only ways to break out of that cycle is to surround yourself with powerful women who have all experienced the same things and can lift you up when you need it.  The entrepreneurial world is full of women who support women.  It’s important to manage what we’re filling our heads with.  Including being mindful of who we follow on social media.  We also need a person who gives you “tough love” and somebody who you can find inspirational.  Lisa follows The Rock on Instagram because of his message and his energy of overcoming his own self-doubt.We truly are better together.  Building relationships is so important, because it allows us all to play to our strengths.  Creating this community has brought Lisa healing in her own life.  It was her safety net and her saving grace.  She’s ready to quit her business on a daily basis.  This is very common for entrepreneurs.  She had doubt when COVID hit and still has doubts, but overall, she created DC Fem for herself.  Lisa Shapiro and DC Fempreneur can be found online at:website: dcfempreneur.comemail: lisa@dcfempreneur.comOn Instagram and Facebook: @dcfempreneur

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies

Are you having trouble scaling your agency? Considering a merger as a growth plan? Have you been approached about merging with another agency? A merger can be a great way to scale up faster by adding a new, complimentary service or a bigger piece of the niche. On the other hand, agency mergers are just as risky as starting the business the first time. If you're considering a merger, there are ways to ensure it is successful In this episode, we'll cover: Three plans you need to make your agency merger successful. Why your some team members might not follow your agency merger. Creating team trust through vulnerability. I talked to Lisa Vielee, who merged her small, 4-person team with a larger full-service agency 15 years ago. Initially, she was seeking a mentor to learn how to scale. He agreed, but also asked her to consider merging the agencies and succeeding him when he retired. The two now have a team of 30 people, and Lisa is President of Well Done Marketing. She is here to explain how the agency has thrived since the merger. Three Plans You Need to Make When Merging Lisa agreed to merge her agency with Well Done Marketing because she had reached the point with her four-person team where she either needed to let them go and return to freelancing or scale into something bigger. She chose a mentor who had successfully grown his own full-service agency. Instead, the two decided to merge agencies. This isn't a simple process, however. It involved developing plans and getting on the same page in three different areas: The 5 to 8-year plan: It is one thing to combine two teams into one. It's another thing figuring out how to move the newly created team forward. You need to find a way to retain their unique connections with clients and provide a greater number of services for all clients involved. The divorce plan: Just as in marriage, most people don't want to think about their brand new merger not working out. However, businesses that merge sometimes fail for any number of reasons. Developing a plan for how to "unmerge" - a sort of prenuptial agreement - is as important as the merger itself. The team plan: One of the mistakes Lisa made in planning a merger was failing to let their teams completely experience all the emotions. Emotions over a merger can range from anxiety about working with new people to sadness over change. Why Some Team Members Might Not Follow Your Agency Merger One of the scary things involved in a merger is the notion that your existing team may not agree with the new direction. Part of Lisa's own growth was learning the importance of giving her team the information they need and letting them decide to stay or not. When Lisa's agency merged with Well Done, she did lose some team members. However, because she was able to realize they had a responsibility to choose their own career path, she continues to partner with those former employees on projects. Lisa turns to them when she needs freelance work and has the opportunity to see them continue to grow and contribute to the creative community. Creating Team Trust Through Vulnerability But wait, the work isn't finished once the merger itself is complete and the teams are working together. Lisa explains you must create cohesion and a unified vision for the team. A few years ago, some young team members requested to add empathy to the team's culture. However, what Lisa realized, was in order to receive empathy, they needed to first become vulnerable to one another. Vulnerability, she says, is the act of letting go of control of the outcome and trusting others in their role. It involves talking to people, not just about the work but about outside things that impact their work. This was something she learned as President of the merged agency -- a role that allows her to step back, view how the agency is functioning, and create a culture without micromanaging the work being done by the team. Would you like a 90% close rate on the deals you want? It took my agency years to develop a solid foot in the door offer that converted at a high rate. And, Ian has spent the last 10 years developing his too. That's why we decided to collaborate and create the FITD framework to share with other agency owners. If you want to learn more check out FootInTheDoor.com. You can discover the exact framework that Ian and I created so you can be successful. Close deals faster, stop giving away strategy for free and win the deals you want. When you have the right framework, you will find your sales process is scalable. You can even step away from sales and so you can spend your time working on the best.

Today, Heather and Ryan speak with Lisa Weaver, Outreach Administrative Assistant at WC, on her YWAM experiences.Kids often feel pressure to know what they want to do after high school. It is often the #1 question they are asked and often they have no idea what they want to do.Lisa didn't know what she wanted to do after graduation, but was invited by a friend (with whom she had gone on a short term mission trip to Nashville TN in 10th grade) to go on a mission trip to Guatemala, Ecuador, and Nicaragua which was her introduction to YWAM (Youth With A Mission). She worked in the kitchen and made a lot of guacamole! She came back, worked for her parents business, and then decided to attend YWAM DTS in Tennessee, near Nashville.  The best part of YWAM is the deep, deep community she found there. You eat, sleep, take class, learn how to work through conflict with them. Lisa was there on campus for 3 months and went on outreach to Malaysia for another 2-3 months. Lisa then felt God was calling her to do a secondary school, which is through YWAM but much more specific than a DTS. Lisa did the School of Ministry Development, which is like a leadership school. The schools are incredible, with cross cultural experiences and academic classes. Some classes are accredited and you can earn college credits. You learn a lot about the Bible and also interpersonal skills. She then made a 2 year commitment to go back as staff and lead a DTS school that was soccer focused. Lisa was in YWAM for almost 10 years (part of that time she was in Germany and England, which was during the Olympics). YWAM partners with their local churches and the community. When Lisa felt that God was calling her to go to secondary school she felt it was a gut feeling. She felt that if she did something else it would be okay, but felt that this is where she needed to go that came through a time of praying, asking God, and reading and still being slightly unsure. It is almost like a theme in her life - “Not sure this is what God is saying but I am going to go with it until something else comes up or until God says no”. Stepping out and trusting, it kind of takes the pressure off of feeling you have to make all of the right decisions for your life. After doing a trip in Europe and visiting other ministries, she felt called to return home. Went on a trip to visit ministries in US and then decided she wasn't called to any of them and was called to work. Got involved in The Living Room here at WC. Got a job she loved and got married. You can have this plan for your life, but even if it doesn't end up how you thought it would go,  it is still awesome.Often we don't know how much we need community until you are in a place where you have it, but then when it is gone you realize how much we need it. The "Great Steak and Shake Debate":  Lisa and her friends debated (while eating at a Steak and Shake) that people are very spiritual or they are secular and there is not really an in-between. Lisa debated that spiritual life is important and the rest of life doesn't even matter. She felt they just didn't get it. And now looking back Lisa feels she is the one that didn't get it. “I thought I knew everything but it turns out I don't know anything.” Actually God is involved in every area of our life, andwe should put Him first and be passionate about what He's given us and the passions he has given us. Every Christian already has a call from God. Mathew 28: 19 “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”Links: YWAM - @ywam_orgFacebook - Lisa Weaver Instagram - @lisahairflipweaverEmail Lisa questions about YWAM - lisaw@worshipcenter.org

Every path and every philosophy has its pros and cons, sure, but it's all about finding the right one for you and making it work. After all, what is Coast to Coast if not a celebration of two different people with two different styles making their way through this world as successful, creative professionals? When Lisa and Garrison sat down for this conversation, they came to the table with so much to say that we couldn't resist breaking it into two episodes. Enjoy a heaping helping of anecdotes and wisdom from our favorite transcontinental couple, and stay tuned for even more in our next episode. Points of interest include: more on Lisa's home project, commercial work, smaller projects vs. bigger and more bespoke, talking to clients - and much more.

Human as we are, we can't help but sometimes feel discouraged whenever we hear a “no”, most especially in the sales business. Yet, in order to succeed, we must learn how not to take a “no” personally, move past this initial rejection, and start over. How? In this episode, Lisa Pezik shares the four tactics that have helped her recover quicker from the no and receive the right YES. She dives deep into solid messaging, split energy, re-direction, and follow-up. When Lisa started in the business almost a decade ago, she approached sales in the way “everyone else was doing it.” Finding her authentic voice and clearing the emotional baggage around money and sales, she is now helping many others overcome this challenge. Lisa lends that wisdom in this discussion.

When Lisa arrived in the US in 2012, for a Masters' program, immigration was far from her mind. As the urgent knock of the real world intensified around graduation, it appeared that there would be a few steps in this process and by as long as the rules were followed, immigration would be mostly procedural. Nearly 8 years after she first arrived, we talk to Lisa about the emotional toll of a turbulent immigration journey. We reconcile who she was, who she has become and what parts of herself seem to have been lost to this stressful path and what a threshold of tolerance might look like for her, when she reconsiders if the costs are worthwhile after all. This is when she started to learn about the important link between nutrition and beauty…that what you feed your skin on the INSIDE is just as important as what you feed it on the outside. If you are doing one or the other, you are only doing half the job and only going to see half the results.

When Lisa first found me, she was not a fan.  She disliked that I didn't follow common business rules. She was triggered by the fact that I unapologetically stated what I wanted. She was annoyed by the fact that I'm so bubbly all the time (lol #guilty) She let that stop her from working with me, until she realized she *wanted* a “rule-breaking business.” —> one that allowed her to homeschool her (8!!!) kids AND triple her income. —> one where she got to *choose* the clients she worked with, and not feel shackled to old contracts so she could provide for her family. —> a business where she could show up as her authentic self, and still have the impact she was created to have. After working with me for just a few months, her previous income ceiling became her income floor. But that's not even the best part. Recently at a family meeting, her teenagers brought up the fact that she wasn't working as much, and how much they appreciated that. She said, “I finally have the freedom to be emotionally present for my life.” I can't imagine anything better than that. —— You can book a call to see if 1:1 coaching with me is your next step, here: https://go.oncehub.com/chatwithJanelle You can find Lisa here: http://coffeeandkeyboard.com

She dove right in and committed to learning by doing.Be open to risk: Don’t overthink the consequences or the outcome. Just take massive action and see what works and what does not work. You need to take the stairs. There is no elevator to success: It s along journey. There are no shortcuts but it's well worth it. You will make a lot of mistakes along the way, but never lose confidence in yourself. Not everyone wants to establish a passion and something they do as a side business to be a big business and that’s okay. Is what you are building a hobby, a passion, a side hustle, a business? Whatever you choose, it's okay. It's up to you to build what you want in both your life and business. Don't dream your life away. You need to live your life. Dreaming is an amazing thing. NOTE:  This episode was accelerated and is being promoted out of order because of the timely discussion on pandemics that Jim and Jan recently had with Lisa Monaco, an expert in this area.  We will return to our normal schedule (episode 195 next week).   Lisa Monaco served as the Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Advisor to President Barack Obama from 2013-2017. In this role, she coordinated the federal government’s crisis management and response to cyberattacks, pandemics, and terrorist threats. She also spent 15 years at the Department of Justice, serving as a career federal prosecutor, and in senior management positions including at the FBI. It was there where she was Chief of Staff to the Director, and helped lead the FBI’s post-9/11 transformation. Lisa discusses how to lead during a crisis, and ways to create a readiness plan for potential threats; pandemic or otherwise.   Key Takeaways [3:35] The role of ‘duty’ in business: A true test of a leader is whether they can put the organization’s role ahead of their own personal views, interests, and what’s safe. [5:25] Leaders can know when they’re on the right track by checking their inner compass and understanding their gut intuition. [8:55] Lisa spent every day in the situation room when she was the Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Advisor to the President. She found that the best decisions that came out of that room were when they had an inclusive process and having multiple different voices in the room to express their facts and opinions. [10:55] The best leaders have built their credibility and trust long before they’ve needed to use it. [11:45] Lisa puts the complex Taliban/Afghanistan peace treaty into perspective. This is only the beginning of the process to end the war. [19:40] What keeps Lisa up at night? Pandemic diseases. As businesses are facing repercussions from the coronavirus, Lisa reminds us that we have to think about resilience and to always have a readiness plan for potential threats. [22:55] Communication and preparation are the two main ingredients to survive unforeseeable events. [24:55] A leader needs to shift through the opinion pieces and be the person that delivers reliable information that the team can trust. [29:25] CEOs are so focused on being busy that they’re not looking to the future. Instead of planning for March or April 2020, you should be planning for March 2025. [30:10] The tone and pace of an organization come from the top. [31:40] When Lisa worked for the President, every day there was a crisis happening. She was able to manage the stress by having an amazing team and having a repeatable process to gather information and assess the importance of it. [37:25] Throughout Lisa’s career, she has been surrounded by amazing leaders. [37:55] A moment that stood out was during the tragedy that happened at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. It cost the lives of nine people. Lisa personally saw how President Barack Obama demonstrated a whole range of leadership skills in just one day. [42:30] Try to live every day as a custodian of the institution that you’re leading. Do not focus as much on the individual needs and desires of the daily decision.   Quotable Quotes “One of the things that make for an effective president is they realize their job is not about being busy, it’s about slowing things down.”   “Panic ensues when people don’t have information or don’t believe they’re getting enough clear information.” “The best leaders have really built up and honed their ability to be effective in that moment well before the moment arrives.”   “If the leader has built credibility as somebody who doesn’t shade, who doesn’t put spin on the ball, then they’re going to be able to deliver that uncomfortable, or perhaps, unwelcomed, but truthful message in that moment.” “We should not lose sight of the fact that those servicemen’s and women’s sacrifices are ongoing every day as we go about our daily lives.” “We have to think about resilience across all these types of threats, whether it’s terrorism, cyber-attacks, or pandemic disease.” “Are you being clear? Are you being candid about what you know and what you don’t know, and are you being regular in that communication?” “Leaders are best when they really listen to their inner compass.”   Resources and Books Mentioned Lisa on Wikipedia What Only the CEO Can Do — Harvard Business Review President Obama delivers Eulogy in Charleston, South Carolina   The Leadership Podcast is Sponsored by:     Cultivate Grit. Giving birth is a big turning point for any woman and family. People talk about how beautiful it is and we treat it as a blessing. But how come we never talk about the effect on a mother’s life afterwards? In this episode of the Fire In the Belly Podcast, Pete sits down with Lisa Burke, an author and yoga teacher, to talk about her traumatic birth experience and how yoga and meditation helped her get through it. Listen in to learn how Lisa managed this and how she found her inner peace and balance. KEY TAKEAWAYS                 There was addiction in Lisa's family which brought many challenges particularly in relation to her self-identity and self-value.  Ultimately the quest was to find a place of balance not just within herself but with her family. This is never easy, but acknowledging the truth allowed for a place to begin the healing. Practising yoga and being around her family helped her improve her health and wellbeing. Though yoga was her #1 solace, it wasn’t possible to do it after her traumatic birth experience. Lisa suffered from postpartum PTSD and had to see a therapist. Her physical (plus psychological & mental) wounds healed, but life became very different. She needed to provide for her child financially, developmentally and emotionally. So, due to financial reasons, Lisa had to put a halt to teaching Kundalini yoga, and apply for a typical 9-5 job. But what isn’t for you, isn’t for you. It was sucked the life out of her. It needs to feel right. When Lisa was working a job she didn’t like, she was dreadful and in pain, even outside the office. According to Lisa, it’s easier to be successful when you’re happy with what you’re doing. So, she left the job, wrote her book, and started teaching again. Listen and connect to what your heart is telling you. Always ask: Does it feel right? Speak your truth. When we share our traumatic experience, we help ourselves and other people. We connect. We hear other insights and take in whatever that could help us. BEST MOMENTS “We all meet that part of ourselves when we want to connect to something deeper, to understand who we are, or to understand why we are here for.” “When you do something that your heart isn’t calling for, a part of you dies.” “If we are able to stop, to turn inwards, to slow down, to calm, to just come at the head and drop down into the heart… that’s where our calling comes from.” “We are required to open up this soft belly, this part of ourselves that has the power to move forward—the power to take steps.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Listen to Fire In The Belly Podcast in Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fire-in-the-belly/id1499375061)! In 2012, My Happy Place was created, a non-profit 501(c)3, offering bedroom makeovers to sick children. In 2016, it was time to add the other half of the equation into the scheme of things and My Happy Haven was born. My Happy Haven offers bedroom makeovers to women with cancer. Cancer affects us all. We all know of a friend or close family member living with a cancer diagnosis. With a cancer diagnosis comes fear and the uncertainty of what the future will bring. Lisa, having been diagnosed with breast cancer herself in 2014, also lost both of her parents to cancer. Believing that there's good that comes from every bad outcome, Lisa used her cancer experience as a catalyst to create My Happy Haven and help other women on a cancer journey.

This is my review of the dvd of the A Haunting tv show that showcase people experience in the paranormal. These are two of the most noticeable hauntings in history that will later be adapted into films. A Haunting in Connecticut Ed and Karen Parker rent a rambling old house in Connecticut to be near the hospital where their 14-year-old son Paul is being treated for cancer. The day they move in, they notice crucifixes hanging over all the doorways. More telling is a basement room filled with head tags, toe tags, coffin keys and religious medals; the house is an old funeral parlor. Although they withhold this information from their four children, Paul makes an ominous announcement; we have to leave here...this house is evil. What happens in the next four days will chill your heart and make you think about locking the doors at night! A Haunting in Georgia Andy and Lisa Wyrick are concerned, their four year old daughter Heidi has two imaginary playmates; Mr. Gordy, an elderly man who pushes her on the swing, and Con, a younger man Heidi describes as missing an arm and covered with blood. When Lisa tells a neighbor of Mr. Gordy and Con, she is astonished to learn that the two men once lived in the area, and they've both been dead for years. The Wyricks refuse to believe Heidi's imaginary friends are the spirits of dead neighbors, until those spirits become dangerous. But when the rest of Heidi's family begins experiencing terrifying phenomena...there's nothing science can do to stop the nightmare!

Clairaudience and Spirit Humor with Medium Lisa Bousson Lisa remembers seeing spirit as early as the age of 4.  She learned quickly, from the response of her parents and others around her, not to talk about it – that this was something she was likely going to just keep to herself. If there are kids who are having psychic or mediumistic experiences, it’s important for their parents to learn how to talk about these experiences with their children.  Having psychic or mediumistic insight is very natural for us as human beings and children would benefit from learning that their experiences are “normal”.  The numerous television shows that feature mediums and psychics do help the general population understand this is a real, and oftentimes normal, experience to have. Lisa perceives much of her mediumship clairaudiently, meaning she “hears” spirit, but most everything she receives is filtered through clairsentience – how she feels or how her body feels about what she is hearing (clairaudiently) or seeing (clairvoyantly).  In other words, her clairaudience informs her other senses of perceiving spirit. Lisa “hears” spirit both inside her head as well as spirit messages that seem to be coming from a source outside of her head.  She can receive as much as several sentences clairaudiently.  In contrast, Lisa also experiences spirit through claircognizance, when means “clear knowing” or a sense of knowing something with certainty.  When she gets a message through claircognizance, Lisa often just gets a word or two from spirit. When Lisa is perceiving spirit clairaudiently, it’s like she’s reading herself a story silently.  She now experiences the energy of her own thoughts and ideas as different than the energy that accompanies spirit speaking to her clairaudiently. When developing your mediumship, one of the biggest hurdles is to not care if you are right or not – just give the messages that you receive.  Practicing with an element of playfulness helps you be easy on yourself and makes you less self-conscious about being “right”.  Your accuracy will develop much faster if you simply trust the messages and impressions that you receive. When spirit brings forth answers, it’s always “truth”.  Spirit may tease or have fun with you, but spirit never lies.  You get to set how you are going to communicate with spirit – you are in the driver’s seat. Spirit communicated with us in a way that is similar to a game of “mental charades.”  Working with spirit gives you a larger world view, a “big picture lens” through which you view the world which results in a stronger sense of freedom.  Because mediums and psychics can be highly sensitive, it’s very helpful to have a strong sense of centeredness and to ground yourself when doing work with spirit.  How to develop or strengthen your clairaudience (your ability to “hear” spirit): q  Pay attention to random thoughts that pop into your head and keep a journal of these q  Take note of EVERYTHING you are hearing Spirit’s messages are not meant to instill fear.  Rather, think of Spirit working in your favor.  If Spirit whispers to you to call your grandfather, it may be just a reminder to spend time with your grandfather and tell him you love him.  Spirit’s messages are not to be feared. In April of this year, Lisa joined Pearson as the Director, Compliance for the Americas.  When Lisa learned about the role, she started researching the company, and Danette.  Danette had been shortlisted for the Women in Compliance awards, both in her individual capacity and for the compliance team.  This was one of the things that made this such a great opportunity for Lisa, and as you will hear in the podcast, it is one great example of the connections that are built in compliance teams and in the compliance community as a whole. In particular, Danette talks about how she became interested in this compliance role while at Pearson, and how her involvement in compliance grew from a perception of compliance as primarily gifts and hospitality, to a fully-formed ethics and compliance program. She discusses one of the team's first major initiatives - a global third-party due diligence project, and the support she received from Pearson leadership and the Board.  This project spanned the entire globe, and is a model for a due diligence initiative. Danette is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and leads a team where many team members are in different locations or remote (and none in Atlanta).  She discusses her approach to leading this type of team, and how she helps the team to evolve and grow in a time of change within the company and global compliance challenges.

Lisa shares how far healthcare design has come in the last ten years with the story of how one husband had to sleep on the floor of the hospital room in an older labor and delivery unit where his wife just gave birth, because it was the only thing available. “The challenges of healthcare design are often like putting together a puzzle”, Lisa says, and it’s one of her favorite aspects of the work. This is making healthcare a more attractive career choice for new designers just out of design school. Where Lisa finds her design inspiration, including the last time she was pumping gas at a gas station. The story of how a husband in a labor and delivery unit wanted to sleep with his wife in the hospital room, and near his new born child, and the only thing the nurse could offer him was a blanket and the floor. The challenges of putting together what sometimes feels like a puzzle is one of Lisa’s favorite aspects of healthcare design and how to put all those moving parts together in a design. Encouraging flexibility and fostering communication between the owner and the general contractor and the design team is a key factor to working through onsite issues. How e4h makes each facility unique according to their geographical location. How planning experts and partners of e4h will engage the town or city surrounding the hospital during the research phase of the project to get their buy in. What advice Lisa has for new healthcare designers who are not that empathetic in nature but want to be. An insider’s view of e4h’s design user group meetings and the best ways to engage participants. Why part of the role as the designer is to get staff thinking about how to improve work-flow. When Lisa got laid off from her first design job at a hospitality design firm, fate stepped in and pointed her towards healthcare design. How the e4h team designs for “onstage” and “offstage” areas in the medical space and how this is very similar to hospitality design. Within 6 months of dating, Todd fell in love with Lisa’s beauty, intellect, and shared interests. They married, have two beautiful children and enjoyed life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Raising their children, spending time together, and traveling are cherished memories. Todd never suspected Lisa is lesbian. In hindsight, he realizes that there were signs. A few years prior to her coming out, Lisa was unsettled, unhappy. In search of herself, she trekked to Asia. Lisa confided in Todd. She was in love with another woman, someone they had known since college. Todd felt shocked and wondered “What will happen now? What does this mean? Where do I fit in?” He likens his reaction to walking along. Not paying attention. Approaching the edge of a cliff. And stepping off. Going off of the edge, having no control. Wondering what does the rest of my life look like? Todd experienced stress, loneliness, panic, and fear…even now, a decade later, it remains difficult to relive these memories. After she came out, Todd and Lisa remained together for eight years. Todd wanted to remain together as a family, to fulfill his dream of being married, having kids, growing old together. They sought assistance from a therapist to help navigate their mixed-orientation marriage. With limited experience, their therapist shared a few resources that provided little guidance. Over time, Todd sensed Lisa was unhappy and supported her in an exploration relationship. Although this worked initially and they maintained an open dialogue, Todd suffered panic attacks; afraid of losing the life that he knew. His future was unknown, and he could not imagine beyond the moment. About five years later, Lisa’s relationship with her exploration partner ended, and Todd and Lisa’s relationship became strained. When Lisa met another woman in a support group, Todd realized that remaining in the marriage was no longer feasible. The first few months following their separation were challenging. Todd and Lisa told their children they were separating; their children already knew Lisa is lesbian. Mourning the loss of their 25-year relationship, they were uncertain how to uncouple their lives and to minimize the impact on their children. This period was marked by loneliness and uncertainty. Seeking the freedom to choose his next path, Todd moved out of their family home into an apartment. During this painful period, Todd leaned on and found support in friends and family, including Lisa’s family. Throughout this experience, Todd has developed a close relationship with his father-in-law, a gift for which he is thankful. Another gift was learning to fly, a passion shared by his grandfather and something Lisa supported. Todd could leave the earth, control where the plane was going. This sense of control was powerful, "it was my Prozac."It gave him joy during an uncertain, unsettled time. Todd is also grateful for becoming closer with his children, enjoying close communication. Lisa struggled to come out and to discover her identity. Similarly, Todd needed to discover his identity. He urges to stay true to yourself. Be supportive, kind, respectful, and loving to your spouse as their journey is difficult as well. Todd’s greatest hope is happiness for everyone. To begin a new life, Todd moved across the country. He’s found a great support network, close friends, and a new job. He hopes to continue to grow and learn more about himself. He’s proud of his journey, his growth, and discovering who he is and what brings him joy. It’s liberating and exciting. Resources An Unexpected Launch Courageous stories from those forging the way

“Oklahoma now has a Lieutenant Governor who is also a small business owner,” says Matt Pinnell. “So, naturally, I’m going to be going around the state seeking out opportunities to speak to entrepreneurs.” Before he was Lieutenant Governor, Matt Pinnell and his wife Lisa launched Binxy Baby, a company that sells baby hammocks that fit into shopping carts. Today the business is thriving and there are plans to launch two new products later this year. But the Lieutenant Governor still remembers what it was like at the beginning. “The attention to detail when you’re building a business is so important,” he says. In an interview ahead of his presentation at the March OVF luncheon, the Lieutenant Governor shares what those details look like. “I want to help entrepreneurs connect with the resources they need,” he says. “We have the best career tech infrastructure in the country,” says the Lt. Governor. “Many classes are available to help start-ups bolster their businesses.” The Lieutenant Governor also wants entrepreneurs to tap into the accelerators in the state. “The Thunder Launchpad and OK Innovate are raising money for investment funds. i2E also does a good job in that area. But we need more accelerators.” “We have one of the best states in the country for philanthropic activity. So we need to get those people much more engaged in investing in business ventures.” Engagement is key, especially when it involves connecting with the right people and resources. “When Lisa and I decided to launch our business,” recalls the Lieutenant Governor, “it was a slow build process.” For example, it took time to work through the patent protocol for Lisa’s invention. But that investment, which secured a lockproof patent, means that the Pinnells are able to deal effectively with the legal issues that come with the territory. “It’s very frustrating,” says the Lt. Governor, “to see so many knockoff products on places like Amazon. I want small business owners to realize how important it is to find an attorney who specializes in patent infringement issues.” “We went to experts in different fields very early in the process of building our business,” he recalls. “We identified a professional vendor in New York who specializes in manufacturing facilities in China. She helped us through that process.” “It probably took us an extra year to get our product off the ground, but it paid off for us.”Finding customers and making it easy for them to pay for products is another detail that must be carefully considered. “Shopify has made it easy for us to build the e-commerce side of our business,” says the Lt. Governor. “Another thing that has helped us is social media.” “It is critical for entrepreneurs to quickly find someone who is technology proficient. When social media is done well, it’s a lot easier to grow a business.” Growing a business, it seems, is a lot like growing Oklahoma. That’s why the newly elected Lt. Governor is seeking occasions to speak to individuals who want to invest in entrepreneurship. “I never turn down an interview,” he says, “and I’m always looking for opportunities to speak to people who care about these issues. Reach out to my office* and let’s talk. Because entrepreneurship is the future of Oklahoma.” www.ok.gov/ltgovpinnellInterviewed by Kyle Golding for The Golding Group.

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada with a beautiful poem from a good friend. And I’m a big fan of good poetry, especially poems that have been written in the furnace of affliction. I have a friend like that. Her name is Lisa Marie and honestly, she is such an inspiration to me. When Lisa was around 12 or 13 years old, she started suffering from unusual achiness in her joints; she was always seemed tired and listless. Her parents took her to one doctor after the next, but they never got a clear diagnosis. The achiness and tiredness turned into exacerbating pain, and an overwhelming weariness. Brain fog and super-sensitivity to light and sound eventually drove her indoors when she would spend long periods in bed. Finally, it was determined that Lisa Marie was dealing with an unusual form of Lyme’s disease, among other autoimmune disorders. But as her body declined, her heart inclined to God. Her young faith took a beating, but her disease could not defeat her. At the age of 20, Lisa Marie became bedridden. It’s not what any young girl would want, and Lisa Marie kept praying and hoping that things would get better; that they would come up with a treatment for this strange Lyme’s disease gone crazy that relegated her to one room in her house, and a dark room at that, given her sensitivity to light. Get this – that was 20 years ago. And now Lisa Marie is more than 40 years old and she is still in the same situation, living daily with pain that most medications just can’t reach. Yes, and she is still in her bedroom, spending most of her time in the dark. Lisa Marie wears sunglasses when she works on her computer and so this valiant woman is able to write inspirational poems and she posts them on our private pain pal page. Not only that, she prays regularly for each of us in our pain, interceding with great empathy and bolstering our spirits with comforting scriptures. She wrote a poem recently that touched me so much—touched all the “Pals”; I just had to read it for you. She calls it “Cup of Anguish.” And it goes: “Sometimes it all seems too much, This overflowing anguished cup. I say, “I can’t. I’m not this tough.” But then I see upon that tree, The Man of Sorrows slain for me – Unshakable even to death. And though my strength has nothing left, I feel a deep, steadying Breath. For a sacrifice so infinite, May my gratitude be evident. In Your strength, I know I can. So, precious Lord, with all I am. I surrender to Your perfect plan.” Right underneath her poem, Lisa Marie wrote Psalm 119, verse 143, “Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me; yet Your commandments are my delights.” Well, I think you can tell Lisa finds the Word of God her biggest delight; it’s what sustains her day in and day out as she lies on her bed. Hebrews tells us to encourage one another daily, and that’s what I hope Lisa’s story has done for you. If you are troubled and you feel as though anguish has taken over, remember the power and protection, even the delight that is found in the word of God. Because if the Bible, as well as God’s grace, can sustain Lisa Marie, on her bed for some 20 years, He can be your help. By the way, if you’d like a copy of Lisa Marie’s poem called “Cup of Anguish,” just download it off of my radio page at joniradio.org. Or for a hard copy, write to Joni and Friends, P.O. Box 3333, Agoura Hills California, 91376. God bless you today and thanks for listening at Joni and Friends. By: Joni Eareckson Tada © Joni and Friends

In episode two of You’re So Bohemian Podcast I interview Lisa Harris, who empowers women through her projects including Unveiled Beauty and Fashion meets Poetry.  In October, I will be one of the featured speakers at her Unveiled Beauty: Cultivating You! event in Minneapolis and Lisa turns the tables and interviews me about why I was drawn to share my story at her event. This episode begins with Lisa reading her poem True North.  She goes on to share her personal story about “uncovering her most powerful self” and discusses the power of owning the entirety of our story.   In my last interview (a year ago) with Lisa, we discussed the dynamics behind Lisa presenting her own story at Unveiled Beauty: Cultivating You! for the first time.  She had created such a wonderful showcase for others, but hadn’t stood in the spotlight herself.  After her presentation, she reflects on the vulnerability her speakers felt, the transformative healing power of the event, and how speaking from experience changes everything. In the last year, Lisa has come to see the purpose of these events very differently and believes they offer something very unique in the spaces of Women’s Empowerment.  The raw vulnerability of these presentations makes both the speakers and the audience more active participants in empowerment. Like so many great projects, Fashion Meets Poetry, began with a time of personal difficulty and then transformation.  Lisa was working a corporate job and raising two kids when she decided to “get quiet,” take a step back and begin writing.  Her poetry connected her to herself and got the ball rolling.  She reflects on a period in her life that could be called a “mid-life crisis” but she now understands how at age 36 she found it incredibly important to address experiences she had suppressed for twenty-five years.   We have a very candid discussion about self-care including priorities and building capacity to move to the next phase. Currently, her journaling and poetry play an important role in her self-care.  When Lisa asked why I was attracted to Unveiled Beauty: Cultivating You! I realized that we share a common mission: helping women find their voice. As I’ve crafted my speech I’ve realized there are elements of my story I haven’t shared so publicly before and I’m ready to integrate my past.  Unveiled Beauty is currently expanding the wholistic training it provides speakers in connecting to their own story, writing, and public speaking.  It will be exciting to see the next evolution!     If this podcast has inspired you to participate with Unveiled Beauty as a speaker or audience member, Lisa shares the qualities she is looking for in applications.   If you are looking to hear even from Lisa you can become a become a Patron of my podcast and get access to a full-length secret episode available on Patreon.  xx Jenner   Links mentioned in the show ♥ Lisa's Website Fashion Show Get your tickets!  Unveiled Beauty: Cultivating you! By the early 1930’s, Nell Donnelly had it all. Women everywhere loved Nell Donnelly’s stylish, well-made, and inexpensive dresses. But she didn’t just make great dresses. She made a great work environment, too. Unlike a lot of factory owners at the time, Nell paid well. She offered her employees medical care and a pension plan. She even paid for them to go to school. Nell’s hard work paid off. Fortune Magazine called her possibly the most successful businesswoman in America. She was rich, stylish and classy. But she was also a target. On December 16, 1931, Nell and her chauffeur, George, were kidnapped and driven to a nasty old cabin. The eventual trials of Nell’s kidnappers captured the nation’s attention and involved some of Kansas City’s most prominent citizens. Then Brandi frustrates the hell out of us with the story of Lisa Techel’s murder. When Lisa was discovered shot to death in her Iowa home, everyone knew exactly who’d done it — her neighbor. The man had a bad history with Lisa and her husband Seth. Police were sure they had their guy. But when they went to question him, he wasn’t quite the cold-blooded murderer they expected him to be. Hold on tight, folks. This one has so many twists and turns that it could be a two-hour episode of Dateline. Oh, wait. It is. And now for a note about our process. Hello there and welcome to The Crochet Circle Podcast and the show notes for Episode 31 – Moth + Hoover = TROUBLE   In this episode I cover: Old dog, new tricks; Final Destination; En Route; Designs in Progress; Feeding the habit; Quick News Beats and J’adore?   This podcast is sponsored by my online crafting company, Provenance Craft Co.  Thanks to everyone who tunes into the podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, iTunes or the YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated and makes running a podcast very special and worthwhile.    If you would like to support the podcast, you can do that through Patreon:   1 – Old dog, new tricks If you have lots of ends to weave in and some of your yarn tails are beside each other, why not use a large tapestry needle, thread the two ends into the needle and weave them in at the same time?  This will save a lot of time, so long as it doesn’t create too much bulk in those parts of your project.     My second Old dog, new tricks is all about the dratted moth. If you think you have clothes or carpet moths (they both eat fibres) in your house, deal with swiftly and effectively.  Nobody wants to go into their stash to find that moths have decimated it.    Here are some helpful articles/blogs on dealing with moths, including one from yours truly: Vogue article on moths in your wardrobe Country Living Article KNIT IT – HOOK IT – CRAFT IT blog post on moths and your stash  I would also add that if you buy yarn from a shop, online wholesaler or yarn show, you should check through it to make sure there are no moth eggs.  If you want to be very cautionary, pop any new yarn into a freezer bag before you bring it into the house.  Leave it in the freezer for 48 hours to kill off any moths or larvae.    I would rather take this action than have moths rampaging through my sizable (and named on our home insurance policy), lovingly curated stash.       2 - CALs #SummerTopsCAL – goes on until the 22nd July. WIPs and double-dips are welcome and it doesn’t have to be a summer top, it can be a woolly jumper if you prefer. I don’t care how you craft it. Weave, knit, crochet embroider – I just want people to craft and be happy.    Here are the prizes that you can win:  1 - Leather hook case by Nu Shearman, stitch markers by Lisa and a Liberty notebook. 2 – 6 x 50g of Erika Knight Gossypium cotton (enough to make a summer top), stitch markers by Lisa and a Liberty notebook. One of our Crochet Clan, Sharon has also released a pattern.  It’s called the No Sew Mimosa Kimono and she is offering all of you a 15% discount via Ravlery.  Just type in SUMMERTOPCAL at the checkout.  It’s valid until the end of July 2018.    One of the patterns is also up for grabs this month.  All you need to do is add a comment in the YouTube comments below or in the comment box at the bottom of the show notes in Podbean.  I will then pick a winner at random at the end of July.   If you have been admiring and waiting for Rowan to rerelease the Liala top that I did over a year ago, the link is now back on Ravelry!  The power of positive persuasion definitely worked.   #Loftalong – I promised you a Loftalong a couple of podcasts back.  Sonja from John Arbon Textiles and I have been plotting behind the scenes and it is all starting on the 13th July.  It’s one that I am going to run through my Instagram feed @FayDHDesigns rather than through the podcast.    Use #Loftalong for your WIPs and #LoftalongFO for your FOs.  If you have already made a Loft (knitted or crocheted) then you can pop it straight under that # on Instagram and be in with a chance of winning prizes.  So, it doesn’t matter if you haven’t started yet or you have already finished, you can all get in on the Loftalong action.   If you are planning on making one with John Arbon Textiles Knit by Numbers then they are kindly offering a 10% discount on three skeins of their KBN 4 ply.  Simply use the discount code LOFTALONG2018 at the checkout.  The code is valid until the end of August so even if you aren’t going to start until later, you can still get the discount.   There will be prizes too.  There’s the woolly kind that can be won by entering with a Loft made from John Arbon Textiles wool and there’s the bespoke tweed bag kind for any Lofts that haven’t been made with John Arbon wool.  There will also be some runner up pattern prizes.   Both the crocheted and the knitted patterns are both on Ravelry now.   3 – Final Destination I feel like I have managed to do some proper crafting this month.  Yay! On the way up to Ben Nevis to start the Three Peaks Challenge, I managed to finish off a pair of socks for my nephew, Lewis.  The delight on his face when he actually felt how good handmade knitted socks were.  He’s a convert.     Yarn: Regia 4 ply (75% wool, 25% polyamide) 50g/210m Shade 04930   Given that I have had HOURS sitting in our car during the course of June, I managed to crack through my Stoborough shawl by Sarah Hazell.  I used 3 skeins of a skinny Merino (single ply with not too much twist) that I had dyed.  The lightest skein was with an alum mordant and birch bark; the next one was alum mordant with birch bark and an iron modifier (intensifies the colour) and the final one was an alum mordant with an oak gall and an iron modifier. If you haven’t tried a skinny single Merino before, give it a go.  It crochets up beautifully and you can get a really nice stitch definition with it.  Lots of indie dyers use it as a yarn base.      I also sprinted through my first #SummerTopCAL entry – Summer Road Trip Top by Kraftling.  I really like the simplicity of this top.  It is just two straight panels with no shaping.      Yarn: Rowan Creative Linen (DK) 100g/200m in shade Teal Stoborough and the top have both been loaded onto Ravelry as projects, just look me up under MaDashper. I have been working on other things too, and you can see them in Episode 32 – Summer Shenanigans (Part 1).    4 – En Route Although I want to hook on ALL THE THINGS, I have remembered recently that I do better when I have fewer projects on the go.  My mind is less cluttered and I don’t feel like things are being neglected.  So, although there are MANY CALs that I want to enter, I am going to behave and finish off this project before I start anything else.  I am working on my second top for the #SummerTopCAL.  It’s the Verity Top by the lovely Dawn at The Almond Snug.  I saw a version of it in my friend Anna’s feed and immediately it popped to the front of my crocheted garment queue.   I am doing mine in a wool/nylon blend so it will look different from the one shown here.  When I went stash diving for the pattern, I just happened to have only three skeins of yarn that were the right weight (sport weight) for the pattern and they were in the right combination (2 of the same and one contrast).  It was meant to be.     Yarn: Aruancania Ranco (75% Merino, 25% polyamide) 100g/344m  This yarn is now discontinued.    5 – Designs in progress It has been a bumper month on this front.  Today I get to announce that the Stiallach Collection has gone live and that as eluded to last month, you can all download it for free as this year’s birthday pattern. It’s a collection of four purses and two bags all based on the same central striped theme.  As ever, there is a YouTube tutorial to help you get to grips with the techniques.    So, this is free to download between the 6th and 13th July 2018.  Go to Ravelry, click on ‘Stiallach Collection’ pattern and at the checkout, simply enter the code ‘BIRTHDAY’ into the discount box and it will be added to your library.  There will be a UK and a US terminology pattern available.     I feel the need to leave intarsia crochet alone for a while now.  Not too long though. Obviously.   My next rabbit holes I am likely to drop down are slip stitch crochet designs and perfecting patterns in tapestry crochet.   I am trying to use this summer to get ahead of my designs and products.  All of you lovely people that signed up to be testers and product reviewers and signed the NDA, you will hear from me in the coming weeks.    6 – Feeding the habit So, I went to Woolfest at the end of June and obviously, I bought yarn and caught up with friends (go to Episode 32 – Summer Shenanigans to see more on that).  Then a day later, I found myself in a lovely wee yarn shop in Pittenweem, Fife, Scotland and may have bought some more.   1 – Blacker Yarns Lyonesse in shades Citrine and Onyx 2 – Socks Yeah 4 ply in shades Almandine and Topaz 3 – Some Solognot breed wool which is created by a small cooperative in France and I picked up in The Woolly Brew, PIttenweem 4 – Fiskmillan Fibres Romney was also from The Woolly Brew and it is delightful! 5 – Blacker Yarns Llanwenog 4 ply so that I can add it to my British breeds blanket   I have also been given some lovely things by some lovely people.  The yellow bucket bag and stitch markers were from Ali at Little Drops of Wonderful Podcast as part of the dodgy bags MAL.  When Lisa sent through stitch markers as a prize, she also sent me some – she is a gem.  Tania (she of TJ Frog fame) brought me back a lovely notebook (100% recycled paper) from her recent trip to the states.  Marie (Crochet Artisan fame) sent me an amazing knitting and crochet pattern book from Japanese designer Michyo.  I am a lucky lady!   7 - Quick News Beats Global Hook Ups – The next Global Hook Up is due to be on Saturday 7th July 2018 (BST) Time: Saturday 7th July 2018 8:30 PM London BST Join from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android: https://zoom.us/j/4750475819  The meeting ID number is 475-047-5819 and you will need to join via Zoom which you can do here:  https://www.zoom.us/join There is then a second one on Sunday 8th July at 9am (BST) Time: Sunday 8th July 2018 9:00 AM London BST Join from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android: https://zoom.us/j/4750475819  The meeting ID number is 475-047-5819 and you will need to join via Zoom which you can do here:  https://www.zoom.us/join   8 – Big Up Long-term friend of the podcast Tamara has moved back to the UK. Welcome home Tamara!  I am really looking forward to having a proper catch up with her soon. I put a call out to see what magazines people thought were particularly inclusive with their models in terms of race, age, size etc.. The ones that were most talked about were Pom Pom Quarterly, Knitting and Interweave Crochet.     9 – J’adore We are a little bit hooked on a programme called Grace & Frankie starring Jane Fonda, Martin Sheen, Lily Tomlin and Sam Waterson.  It’s great fun and nice to see an older generation being represented on TV in a sitcom.  My only issue is that Martin Sheen will always be Jed Bartlett from The West Wing. I am really loving working with some non-wool yarns.  I can definitely feel the difference in heat when I move to crocheting with wool from cotton and vice versa.  I wasn’t a massive fan of the Rowan linen that I tried using and quickly swapped out to a linen/cotton blend that was more enjoyable but sitting outside under my parasol crocheting away in cool yarns has been lovely.    Fay x   Instagram: Crochet_Circle_Podcast  Instagram: provenance.craft.co   Instagram: FayDHDesigns YouTube: The Crochet Circle Podcast Crochet Clan on Mighty Network: Invite

The year is 1999, and thirteen-year-old Elliot is a self-appointed "diet coach" who teaches her classmates how to survive on one stick of gum a day to get heroin-chic, Kate Moss thin. Elliot is obsessed with her best friend and former "client" Lisa, who is fresh out of inpatient treatment and dating a nineteen-year-old drug dealer. Meanwhile, Elliot's mother Anna, a capricious poetry professor, has a drug addiction and eating disorder of her own. When Lisa transfers her fixation from food to sex with her boyfriend, Elliot's fragile grip on reality begins to falter, at the same that time that Anna's fascination with the object of her own blind lust, the student who relinquishes his cocaine to her during office hours begins to consume her. I Must Have You is the story of what happens one three-day weekend in an explosion of desire, hunger, and lost innocence. JoAnna Novak's kaleidoscope of 1990s America, filled with vibrant imagery from riot grrl graffiti to Michael Jordan posters, offers a vision of the complexities of womanhood and the culture that keeps the modern girl sick. I Must Have You is a provocative debut of rare honesty from a daring new voice. Similar to the works of Miranda July, Novak's novel will appeal to a new generation of readers who hunger for raw female protagonists. Praise for I Must Have You "I Must Have You is a book about girls―their secret languages and private codes, their painful preoccupations and complex compulsions, and their scary tendency, when caught in the gazes of society, men, (and worst, each other), to diminish themselves―sometimes to the point of disappearing completely. With risky, confident prose and brazen psychological renderings―not to mention a knack for getting the 90's just right―Novak takes us on a seductive, uncharted journey through modern womanhood, obsession and illness. I can honestly say I have never read anything like this book." ―Molly Pretiss, author of Tuesday Nights in 1980 "I Must Have You is a devastating novel about loving and trying to destroy one’s own body."―Ramona Ausubel, author of Sons and Daughters of Ease and Plenty  "I Must Have You showcases JoAnna Novak's raw, real, and vivid voice in the character of Elliott, a sharp-tongued, sharp-witted, and complex young heroine unlike any we've met. Novak's intelligent, funny, frightening, and deeply felt novel bravely goes where this genre has not gone before: into the darker reaches of a culture that casts a long shadow across the lives of girls and women today. Novak explores the extent of our longing, and—ultimately—the source of our strength."—Marya Hornbacher, New York Times Bestselling Author of Madness, Wasted, and others. "JoAnna Novak's voice is unforgettable and her irreverent, addictive debut is sure to position her as one of the great stylists of her generation. I Must Have You is a brilliant and candid look at what it means to be a girl in this world; it's a meditation on hunger, on wanting, on the things and people that consume us, and on the things and people that we long to consume. A truly exciting, beautiful novel."—Diana Spechler, author of Who By Fire and Skinny  “I Must Have You presents a harrowing and immersive story of compulsion and disorder, addiction and obsession, with frequent detours through the teenage cultural wasteland of the late nineties, all rendered in JoAnna Novak’s crazed, slang-stilted, glinting prose.”—Teddy Wayne, author of Loner  "JoAnna Novak's I Must Have You is a rhapsodic, tumbling, yet rigorously controlled excavation of the secret worlds within us all. Her characters hurtle toward the painful pleasure of self-destruction, uninterested in stopping themselves, determined to find the next prick to make them feel alive. It's a visceral process, like picking off a scab. This is a necessary book."—Sarah Gerard, author of Binary Star  "I Must Have You is a tragic, funny, and moving coming-of-age story. It was impossible not to be swept up in JoAnna Novak's gorgeous, inventive prose, or to stop yourself from falling in love with her irreverent, wild, and ultimately human characters. I loved every word."—Anton DiSclafani, New York Times Bestselling author of The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls and The After Party "Novak looks unflinchingly at the precarious attachments between female peers, mother and daughters, during some dangerous, inchoate transitions. With exacting prose she explores the the shadow terrain of female attachment, one that is uncertain at best, dangerous at worst. This is a book you'll want to look away from for its familiarity and its honesty, but you won't be able to. This story is nothing if not a disorienting mediation on the tangle of self-loathing, loneliness, and a desire for oblivion that so many women privately hold."—Rebecca Rotert, author of Last Night at the Blue Angel JoAnna Novak's debut novel I Must Have You will be published in May 2017 and a book-length poem, Noirmania, will be published in 2018. She has written fiction, essays, poetry, and criticism for publications including Salon, Guernica, BOMB, The Rumpus, Conjunctions, and Joyland. Lisa Dion is the creator of Synergetic Play Therapy and is the founder and director of the Play Therapy Institute of Colorado   She is experienced in many settings to include private practice, schools, social services, foster care agencies, and orphanages.    Synergetic Play Therapy’s name was influenced by Lisa’s love for the brain and understanding what happens in the nervous system.     The collaboration between the child and the therapist, and on a deeper level between the mind, breath, body is an important support in the therapeutic process.  Through this realization, she was drawn to the word “synergy” since it is the idea that when 2 parts come together, the effect is so much greater than what they are individually.   Collaboration within the therapist, child and between them both is cultivated.   Through Lisa’s work, before she created Synergetic Play Therapy, she felt like something was missing.  She had a personal experience with her daughter that gave her an intuitive felt sense of the importance of bringing in the nervous system getting into the somatics.  Becoming an external regulator can take it to a deeper level of healing.  Accessing the brainstem allows for work involving the level of attunement such as what’s present between a caregiver and an infant.  Lisa’s students say that it feels like a way of being rather than a model.  Her students report transforming through the process and it spills over into their other relationships.   Synergetic Play Therapy is not a list of fun techniques or activities to do with the child, but rather it is a “way of being”.   One of her students said, “Synergetic Play Therapy gives birth to the authentic self within the child and the therapist.”   Lisa urges her students to study as many philosophies and models of play therapy as possible to maximize their abilities.    Implicit memories bring a feeling and a felt sense that was placed in the early years.  Often before the age 3, the implicit memories provide the structures in the brain.    When Lisa’s daughter was born, she was emotionally dysregulated. While Lisa was pregnant with her, they both experienced a car crash. When she was born, Lisa was on a journey to help her rewire her nervous system.  She had her first play therapy experience at 9 months old where she played out shock of what she felt when the car accident happened.    The exchange happening between the therapist and the child is such a vital part of therapy.   Synergetic play therapy teaches the therapist what to do with their personal experience of what the child is feeling and experiencing through the play.     When parents are dysregulated, they need to regulate before they tend to their child.   The therapist does a lot of breathing, and modeling for the child.   The mirror neuron system allows the child to borrow the therapist’s regulatory system.  Therapist use themselves to support the child through their healing.  The therapist is intentionally authentic and may rock, say things, and do things that the child needs right in the moment.   Lisa tells a story of a child that had many generalized fears that learned regulatory techniques such as holding her heart and stomach while she did that during his expressions of the fearful scenerios.  In session 3, he reported that he knew what to do when he got scared.  He was able to borrow her nervous system, watch how she handled the situations, and internalized a way of taking care of himself during these types of situations. Through that process, his nervous system got rewired organically and experientially.    This process also helps keep the therapist well during the process.   Synergetic Play Therapy also offers a certification option as well.    Lisa has a new book coming out in Spring of 2018, “Aggression in Play Therapy: A Neurobiological Approach for Integrating Intensity” from Norton Publishers.    Lessons from the Playroom bi-weekly Podcast https://playtherapycolorado.com/podcasts/ Hour Live Webinar – 1 x a month https://playtherapycolorado.com/webinar/ Community Membership https://learn.playtherapycolorado.com/product/membership-site/ Play Therapy Institute of Colorado’s Website: https://playtherapycolorado.com/   https://www.facebook.com/PLAYTHERAPYCOMMUNITY/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/parentingintherain/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/1130971706932394/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/schoolcounselors/ https://www.facebook.com/counselinginbrevard/ www.counselinginbrevard.com www.playtherapycommunity.com www.parentingintherain.com www.jackieflynnconsulting.com https://twitter.com/jackieflynnrpt

Lisa Napoli was among the first journalists to cover the digital age as a staff reporter and columnist for The New York Times and its CyberTimes. She then appeared as an on-air technology reporter and columnist for MSNBC and as a host and reporter for public radio’s Marketplace. Her first book, Radio Shangri-La, chronicles her time in and around the Kingdom of Bhutan, where she was invited to help start a radio station at the dawn of democratic rule. For four years, she covered arts and culture for the acclaimed public radio station KCRW. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she currently lives in Los Angeles, where she leads an award-winning cooking group for homeless women on Skid Row.   Ray and Joan is about many things: mid-20th century US cultural history; post-WW2 emergence of fast food culture; addiction and its impact on the family; addiction treatment (the early days of, in particular;) philanthropy that precedes the grandeur of Buffett and Gates; the no-nukes movement of the 80s; the San Diego Padres; the mass media’s influence on all of the above, and, most importantly of all, the complexity of marriage. When Lisa went to cover the fate of a crumbling peace sculpture in front of the Santa Monica courthouse for radio station KCRW, she didn’t know she’d spend the next five years tracking down the story of Joan Kroc, one of the greatest and little known philanthropists of the twentieth century.  The heiress to the McDonald’s fortune had anonymously funded the 26-foot tall mushroom cloud by Paul Conrad, titled Chain Reaction, at the height of the no-nukes movement.  Lisa knew just two things about Joan: that she had given a landmark posthumous gift to NPR, and that at one point she’d run the baseball team she’d inherited from her late husband.  But she found it curious that a woman who lived in San Diego would come to fund a polarizing artwork nowhere near her home. When Lisa went in search of a biography, she couldn’t find one—so she decided to write one.  Soon, she disccovered: why no book yet existed about Joan; that writing about Joan meant writing about Ray, and learning about the roots of the fortune that the third wife of the founding chairman of McDonald’s ultimately gave away. Frank Buckley is an anchor of KTLA Morning News. Frank joined KTLA in June 2005 from CNN where he had been a national correspondent. Frank is also host of the “Frank Buckley Interviews” podcast. Links & Resources  Humane Rescue Alliance – Amazing animal rescue organization Lisa leads in Washington, D.C. About Lisa LaFontaine Lisa LaFontaine is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA), this area’s premier animal welfare organization. HRA was created when two iconic predecessors—the Washington Humane Society (WHS) and the Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL)—came together to form a single more powerful voice for animals. With this historic union, Washington, DC, becomes the only major urban area in the country that has all of its animal protection programs and services—from medical services and adoptions to animal control and humane law enforcement—unified in one organization. Lisa’s experience and accomplishments in the animal welfare field are a testament to her compassion and commitment and have prepared her well for the challenge of heading up such a unique organization. She left a successful career in publishing after having what she describes as a personal epiphany. Her young daughter, who was diagnosed with Turrets syndrome, had trouble sleeping at night. A counselor advised having one of the family cats, to whom Lisa’s daughter was very attached, sleep with her. This cat, who had never been interested in sleeping on anyone’s bed, willingly curled up with her, helping bring her the sense of calm she needed to sleep. Lisa recalls thinking first that there had never been an animal like this cat and then that perhaps other people felt the same sense of connection with their companion animals. Her commitment to animals and their well-being was born. As CEO of New Hampshire’s Monadnock Humane Society, Lisa spearheaded a successful capital campaign that resulted in construction of a new, state-of-the-art animal welfare facility and an expanded endowment fund for the organization. In 2007 she was hired as President and CEO by the Washington Humane Society, where she significantly increased the live release rate for animals from one of the lowest to one of the highest in the country. She also advocated for greater animal protection through innovative programs and changes in law and built critical relationships with DC’s diverse interests and communities on behalf of animals in need. Lisa worked closely with the senior staff and Boards of Directors of both WHS and WARL to lay the groundwork for a new, combined organization that would not just be larger but would also be more powerful, one that could accomplish more for both animals and people. The Humane Rescue Alliance is the result of that collaboration.     Given her personal and professional devotion to animals, Lisa is dedicated to the vision of a community where there is a loving home for every unwanted animal, affordable medical care for every sick and injured animal, an end to animal abuse and cruelty, and stronger bonds between animals and people through education and training. She believes that the Humane Rescue Alliance can bring that vision to fruition. When not advocating for the animal community at large, Lisa shares her life and home with her husband, Matt Kayhoe; Sazzy, their pit bull; cats Crystal, Gregory Xavier Pibb, and Harold; and an ever-rotating and always welcomed family of foster animals. She serves as Vice Chairman of the DC Board of Veterinary Examiners and is a proud member of SAWA (the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators).

When Lisa noticed that Karen knew all of her songs and had an amazing sense of harmony, Lisa asked Karen to join her band. They have since become a musical powerhouse. With harmonizing skills that have garnered the duo many accolades and opening spots with artist such as Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, BB King, Al Green and many more.  Lisa Sanders and Brown Sugar are set to tour in support of their 8th CD release Shiver, nominated for San Diego Music Awards Best Pop Album. Produced and recorded by Jeff Berkley of Berkley Hart. Recorded with the Lisa Sanders Band, led by Jeff Berkley.

Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership

Lisa Copeland is known as the expert on over 50's dating. She's the Amazon Best-Selling Author of “The Winning Dating Formula For Women Over 50” and a regular Huffington Post contributor. Her passion is showing women around the world how to find love again with a good man after 50. Guiding Principle, Quote or Mantra You can’t work out everything. Also, let the relationship be fun and playful. When You Tripped Up Lisa made the same trip-up in both her first and second marriage. She would ignore the red flags until they got to be “serious.”  As a woman she had this tendency to settle thinking someone will change over time. But it doesn’t work that way. Then in her second marriage they met and had unbelievable chemistry. And she thought it was the coolest thing. What happened was they fell in lust not love. They had a heart connection and a sexual connection, but the friendship was missing. Without the friendship component they could not deal with anything that came up, and it is why the marriage only lasted two years. When the rose colored glasses came off, she could see the problems were there before they got married and they never had any business getting married. They were having some issues before the wedding and her fiancee’ said “Do you think we should hold off on this?” But she was so caught up in having the wedding of her dreams and was not about to stop it.  This was a mistake. The “DUH” moment that changed your partnerships forever Lisa “DUH” moment was when two different partners said as the relationship was ending, “Lisa, you don't know how to let a man be a man.” She learned that men have much stronger emotions than most women give them credit for. Lisa came from the generation of women liberation which was amazing for getting jobs, but really messed with the male and female roles and how to work them out. Then she learned how much men want to make her happy and be her hero. She learned how to let a man be her hero and how to receive, and now she doesn’t have to do it by herself anymore. Proudest moment in partnership When Lisa was sitting at a conference with her male friend, John, and she asked him to take a picture for her.  And John said, “Lisa I love it when a woman asks me for my help.’ In that moment she recognized what power that was. Because in the past she felt like she had to push to get her needs met. This moment showed her the magic of relationships. What is the best partnership / relationship advice you have ever received? Allowing a man to be a man and as a woman receiving what a man is giving in the way he is giving it. You’re power as a woman comes from letting a man be your hero versus ordering or demanding or controlling him to be what you want him to be. Which make him respect her. This makes the relationship so much lighter and more fun. Her energy alone is contagious. Stir in a terrific sense of comedy and several cupfuls of improv training and you have the perfect recipe for a dish we call “Fun to Work With” and a TV host, comedian and actress we call Lisa Gilroy! This multi-talented young woman was the host of YTV’s Undercover High (series nominated for an International Emmy) and currently co-hosts the afternoon pre-teen staple called The Zone as well as the live broadcast talent search competition The Next Star. When Lisa isn’t on camera, she’s writing and performing comedy sketches with a variety of improv groups at comedy clubs. How was young Lisa Gilroy plucked from thousands who submitted self-taped auditions to YTV who then shipped her across the continent from the wilds of Western Canada to the well-pounded pavement of Toronto? And how did those first few weeks go? In her words: “It was a medical miracle … minus the medical part!” Great Story! But we’ll let her tell it to you. When Lisa traveled home to visit her parents in December 2011, she never expected an ordinary three-day weekend to turn into an extraordinary 14-day observance of her mother’s life – and ultimately – death. 14 DAYS – A MEMOIR, is a story of parental loss, and how to lovingly, bravely and gracefully let go of a hand you’ve been holding your entire life. From a child’s first breath, to a mother’s last, this memoir shows how closing that circle can be a celebration of this unbreakable bond. Lisa Goich-Andreadis is an award-winning copywriter, major market talk radio host, blogger, journalist and former stand-up comedian. Graduating from Central Michigan University in 1984 with a Bachelor Of Applied Arts Degree in Journalism, she has spent her life dedicated to the written word, the spoken word and the arts. Lisa has worked for some of the biggest names and corporations in the literary and entertainment business: Mitch Albom, Carole King, Robert Redford, ABC, The WB, CAA and Playboy. She has written ads for clients including: The American Red Cross, KFC, 7-Eleven, Thorn Apple Valley, and numerous TV and radio stations. Join her for one of her free mini e-courses on Embracing Courage, Writing Wild, or Creating Money. Lisa also offers the Nurture Project and holds an MBA in entrepreneurship and leadership. Lisa is launching three books this year, including Stop Waiting, Start Creating. In this episode, Lisa covers the following topics: Lisa didn’t desire to become a mother, so she was actually relieved when she reached that realisation and was able to put the associated stress aside. Society “assumes” that every woman wants to become a mother. Many people feel obligated to give unsolicited advice to others about the choice they have made being the right thing for everyone! Having a child is only ONE kind of creative expression, but not the only one. Lisa asks, “What would I like the world to be like 1000 years from now?” “Exhaustion and burnout are the results of working hard for OTHER peoples’ dreams, and not your own.” When Lisa was facing burnout, she made a list of the things that made her happy, and was only able to list four things at first! “If you ever wonder if you are a leader, then go and play with a horse, because the horse will let you know if he is willing to follow you or not.” Lisa’s favourite way to express her creative energy is by writing. Lisa is inspired most by those who are kind and nurturing, especially when men show these qualities. We should all be more compassionate in embracing our differences instead of labeling them “right” or “wrong.” Lisa speaks about how we can encourage more tolerance in the world and eliminating stereotypes. “Whatever you choose, you can have a fantastic life if you are YOU!” Find out how focusing on the present moment can be the secret to happiness. I told Lisa to include a silent auction item from me…the chance to co-host and select two guests.  Well in the end Lisa was the winning bid – not sure there were any other bids or Lisa has had this deep desire to fulfill her Robin Quivers Radio Role! The two musicians she selected are also from the Portland area…Lisa showing love to her peeps in the northwest. First is Rae Gordon. She was awarded a Muddy Award in 2014 for Best Female Vocalist and is a constant presence in the Northwest Music Scene.  I look forward to learning more about Rae during the show. Kevin Selfe is a Couch Kid and would have been booked for a Couch Kid New Music Segment with the release of his latest, Buy My Soul Back.  When Lisa mentioned his name it was a done deal! As Co-host, Lisa will be asking a lot of the questions and I can guarantee there will be fun galore. Of course we will hear some music from each of these folks. photo of Aly: Tori Ava
