Everyone's using AI. in therapy, at work, even at the doctor's office. Yet, we still avoid talking about it. AI has become the invisible collaborator behind so much of modern life, but it remains taboo to mention at work and in most public settings. In this episode, we explore the culture lag between private use and public admission and ask: when will saying “I used AI for that” sound as normal as “I used Google”? On the latest episode of the Remarkable Retail Podcast co-hosts Steve Dennis and Michael LeBlanc deliver another fast-moving episode at the intersection of strategy, leadership, and retail reinvention. The episode opens with Steve leading the weekly news rundown, spotlighting Walmart's groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI's ChatGPT — a move that could redefine how shoppers discover products and transact. They then turn to earnings where LVMH's modest rebound hints at a possible luxury reset, contrasted sharply with Saks Global's double-digit losses and ongoing integration pains. The co-hosts analyze Levi's direct-to-consumer surge under CEO Michelle Gass, before diving into Aritzia's remarkable 32% growth and aggressive US expansion. From there Michaels Arts & Crafts CEO David Boone joins for a wide-ranging conversation about creativity, transformation, and speed. Boone shares how Michaels' “seize the moment” initiative emerged after the collapse of Party City and JoAnn's — an opportunity to rapidly introduce new in-store and digital concepts like The Party Shop and Balloon Bar. Drawing on his leadership experience at Staples Canada, Boone contrasts private equity agility with public-company complexity and explains why, in today's market, inaction is riskier than risk itself.Boone also details Michaels' journey toward a truly omnichannel creative ecosystem, where digital discovery enhances the tactile joy of physical stores. He discusses the integration of JoAnn's beloved IP into the Michaels experience and how the company's purpose — “fueling the joy of creativity and celebration” — guides everything from store design to marketing voice.Steve and Michael close with their “what's remarkable” segment, breaking down OpenAI's new Sora social video app and the explosive pace of AI adoption and lifting up International artisanal brand MUDD and the creative retail energy they embody. Together they reflect on the balance of innovation, humanity, and retail momentum heading into the 2025 holiday season. About UsSteve Dennis is a strategic advisor and keynote speaker focused on growth and innovation, who has also been named one of the world's top retail influencers. He is the bestselling authro of two books: Leaders Leap: Transforming Your Company at the Speed of Disruption and Remarkable Retail: How To Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption. Has your business hit a growth plateau? If so, this episode is for you. Because building a brand isn't just about good design or smart strategy–it's about finding your voice and using it to create opportunities. In this special conversation, I joined Brian Mattocks on The Hard to Market Podcast to talk about the lessons I've learned running The brandiD for more than 15 years, and why your voice is often the most powerful marketing tool you have. Your Voice Builds Your Pipeline If your growth has slowed, hiding behind the work won't turn things around. You need to put your voice out there. I share how podcasting, LinkedIn, and even simple visibility habits can attract the right people to your business, even if you're introverted. Focus Creates Momentum Trying to speak to everyone dilutes your message. When I relaunched MyPath101, narrowing the audience and leaning on partnerships made all the difference. You'll hear how choosing focus over frenzy during slow periods can create the traction your business needs. Enjoy this episode…  Soundbytes 05:23 - 05:48 “Our growth has been completely organic over these last 14-15 years, except for some partnerships and people who stumbled upon us through Google searches. But even those partnerships have been organic, meaning they just kind of came about by happenstance. I wasn't overly intentional about creating them, but we've always done really good work, and my team is exceptional at what they do.” 08:33 - 09:00 “When I launched that company, it was in 2015. Then we had three different target audiences. It was parents, the students themselves, and high school and college administrators, and we were trying to sell to all three…That wasn't the best move, because it was really difficult to speak to all three through one website.” 29:20 - 29:41 “I lean on my faith, quite honestly, more than ever when things get a little sticky. Whether it's personnel changes or a little uptick in business, I honestly pray about it. That the right people come our way.” Quotes “I'm here to help people be limitless in whatever their journey is.” “Strategy is great, but it's nothing if you don't do something with it.” “I love helping people figure out what they're here to do and then bring light to them, you know, to shine on their journey.” Links mentioned in this episode: Connect with brandiD Find out how top leaders are increasing their authority, impact, and income online. They want to present themselves as civilized. That's a testament to us, not to them. We didn't disrupt their nonsense. For us, their “protest” was business as usual, so we went on with our lives. They claim that 7 million people protested at 2600 events. I think this is likely the actual number of people who voted for Biden.USA Today said before the events that they we expected to be “boisterous, joyful”. Brianna and Gabrielle are excited to welcome Kelsey White to the show. Kelsey White is a subconscious rewiring coach, speaker, and host of the podcast Unf*cked with Kelsey White. After years of feeling stuck, self-sabotaging, and trying every “traditional” personal development tool with little to show for it, she discovered the missing link—her subconscious mind. By blending neuroscience, psychology, spirituality, and EFT tapping, Kelsey reprogrammed the limiting beliefs that once held her back and created quantum leaps in her life and business, moving from five years of procrastinating to accomplishing all of her goals in less than 90 days. Now, she helps high-achieving women break free from perfectionism, people-pleasing, and the fear of failure so they can build businesses and lives they are wildly obsessed with. With an audience of over 35,000 on TikTok, Kelsey is on a mission to prove that you can be, do, and have whatever the f*ck you want in this life—as long as your subconscious mind believes it's possible for you. And her purpose is to teach you how to do it.LINKS: FOLLOW KELSEY ON TIKTOK    @rewirewithkelsey LISTEN TO THE PODCAST:  UNF*CKED WITH KELSEY WHITESTART REWIRING NOW   UNF*CKED INNER CIRCLEPlease rate and review the podcast on Apple, Google, Spotify, or wherever you listen! It's a classic of the early app economy. The big difference is that Zocdoc plugs into the U.S. healthcare system, which is of course a giant mess, and that means Zocdoc has a big moat. David Hutchens: Story Dash David Hutchens works with leaders around the world to find, craft, and tell their most urgent stories for the purpose of creating shared meaning, preserving culture, disseminating learning, and speeding change in organizations. He has taught the Storytelling Leader program at some of the most influential organizations, including NASA, Paypal, Loreal Paris, Cisco, Walmart, Google, and FedEx. He's written many books, including the Circle of the 9 Muses, Story Dash, and The Leadership Story Deck. When organizational change is happening, leaders need to be intentional about lining up with culture, especially if it's the time to shift that culture just a bit. We often do the logistics well, but we miss the power of both the human and emotional connections. In this episode, David and I discuss how story can help us make a meaningful shift. Key Points The organizations that are being intentional about culture are also being intentional about story. Getting beyond the logistics of changes and leaning first into humanity and emotion help people frame cultural shifts. Leaders go first. Embodied stories from leaders are surprising, counter-cultural, and repeatable. Asking for stories is rarely sufficient. Instead, invite stories through intentional prompts like, “Tell me about a time you felt more engaged, alive, and happiest in your work here.” Received stories are the ones told by employees. Adding an emotion word to an invitation such as, “What's a time you were proud?” often surfaces more genuine stories. David is now a Coaching for Leaders expert partner. What if boredom is the birthplace of your teen's creativity—and your sanity? And what if your own playfulness is the most powerful “parenting tool” you're not using? In this episode, internationally recognized play designer and RISD professor Cass Holman (creator of the RIGAMAJIG and author of Playful) shows us why free play—play that's freely chosen, personally directed, and intrinsically motivated—is essential for teens and adults. We talk about releasing judgment, embracing possibility, and reframing success (hint: it's not the perfect selfie at the summit). Cass explains why boredom matters, how “consuming” play (scrolling) differs from “generative” play (making), and offers practical ways moms can invite more low-pressure play into everyday life—without becoming their teen's cruise director. Guest bio paragraph:Cass Holman is an internationally recognized designer, educator, and play advocate. A longtime professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, Cass created RIGAMAJIG, a large-scale building kit used in thousands of schools and museums, and is featured on Netflix's Abstract: The Art of Design. Their new book, Playful: How Play Shifts Our Thinking, Inspires Connection, and Sparks Creativity, distills two decades of designing for play, leading workshops at places like Google, Disney, and Nike, and collaborating with child-development experts to help all of us—kids, teens, and adults—reconnect with true play. Three takeaways: Boredom is productive. Letting teens linger in boredom helps them notice what they actually need and choose self-directed, creative action. Reframe success. Swap “Did we reach the top?” for “Did we connect?”—and watch stress melt while curiosity rises. Model, don't manufacture. You don't need to entertain your teen; be playful yourself. Release judgment, embrace possibility, and let “good enough” be great. Learn more at: https://casholman.com/ Follow at https://www.instagram.com/casholman/ Learn more about your ad choices. The Brief: How our recent past should prepare us for the age of AI

In this issue of The Brief, we're reflecting on what we learned about the past and future of design from our conversation with Paola Antonelli (The Museum of Modern Art), Mark Wilson (Fast Company), Kate Aronowitz (GV), Mike Davidson (Microsoft), and Meaghan Choi (Anthropic). Looking back at 30 years of design by Eli Woolery Roughly thirty years ago, I was an undergrad, sitting in our dorm's computer cluster —this was before the days when most students had laptops. I ran into something I hadn't seen before. It was called Netscape Navigator, and it was one of the first commercial internet browsers (which our very first guest on Design Better, Irene Au, helped design). I clicked on one of the buttons (probably, “What's Cool”), and along with a nifty loading animation, the browser took me down some early internet rabbit hole. I don't remember where exactly I ended up, but I do remember being blown away by the experience. As a computer nerd kid in the 80's, I had spent plenty of time with bulletin board systems (BBS's) and things like America Online, which we could access through a dial-up modem from home. But this was very different. It was fast—compared to what I was used to—and it felt like I could almost instantaneously access content from all around the world (even though the content online at the time was a miniscule fraction of what it is today). I had entered school to study product design, but this was for products in the physical world…digital product design didn't exist as we know it today. The first use of the phrase “User Experience” in a job title was Don Norman's role a a User Experience Architect at Apple in the mid-90s. Browsers like Netscape Navigator, and then the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, opened up a new world of opportunities and challenges for the field of design. In our conversation with Paola and Mark, we talked about four: the democratization paradox, design's loss of innocence, the fragmentation of the design profession, and the shift from tangible to intangible design. The Democratization Paradox “We democratized all the tools and we democratized none of the platforms. And that gap is just in a nutshell, kind of what's broken about the individual's ability to communicate.”—Mark Wilson, Fast Company While design tools and capabilities have been democratized (everyone can now access design software, create content, etc.), the platforms and systems remain highly centralized within a few large companies—Meta, Google, TikTok, etc. The early, messy days of the internet (Geocities, MySpace) have been largely tamed, which can make for better user experiences, but we also miss the wild creativity that came from having an infinite number of ways to express yourself online. Back then, your personal web page could be a nightmare of animated GIFs, visitor counts, and autoplay music—terrible for usability, but at least it was yours. Today, we're all posting in the same formats, and are subjected to the same algorithmic rules for engagement. The tools to create have never been more powerful or accessible, yet we're increasingly creating within narrower and narrower boundaries defined by a handful of tech giants. Beyond politics, Lionel takes aim at the captivity of modern technology, issuing stern warnings to young people: never post photos of your baby, never send a selfie (especially not one with "duck lips" in the bathroom), and beware that sharing your location online can lead to robbery. He argues social media "exacerbates and potentiates levels of mental illness". Jeffrey Eisenberg and I were looking though a pair of antique doors at Austin Auction Gallery when I saw a remarkable oil painting on the wall behind them and whispered in wonder, “Ozymandias.”The auction catalog described the painting as, “Arabian horse and handler with Egyptian sphinx, signed lower right Maksymilian Novak-Zemplinski (Polish, b.1974), dated 2000.”But I knew that painting for what it was. I've loved “Ozymandias” since the 9th grade. You remember it, don't you? Bryan Cranston read that famous poem in the final episode of “Breaking Bad.” The title of the episode was “Ozymandias,” and TV Guide picked it as “the best television episode of the 21st century.” It was also the only episode of a TV show ever to achieve a perfect 10-out-of-10 rating on IMDb with over 200,000 votes, putting it at the number one spot for the most highly rated television episode ever:I met a traveller from an antique land,Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stoneStand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,Tell that its sculptor well those passions readWhich yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;And on the pedestal, these words appear:“My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!”Nothing beside remains. Round the decayOf that colossal Wreck, boundless and bareThe lone and level sands stretch far away. When I returned home from the auction, I spent a delightful 90 minutes tracking down all the bits and pieces of how that poem came to exist. It was in 1817 that Percy Bysshe Shelley and his poet friend, Horace Smith read the news that the carved head of Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II had been removed from its tomb at Thebes by an Italian adventurer and that it would soon be traveling to Britain.Shelly suggested to Smith that each of them should write a poem about it and title each of their poems “Ozymandias,” the Greek name for Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II.Look at the poem as it appeared in newspaper on that day in 1818, and you will see that Percy Bysshe Shelley signed it, “Glirastes.” He did it as an inside joke intended only for his wife, Mary Shelley, who, incidentally, published her famous novel “Frankenstein” that same year.Mary often signed her letters to Percy as “your affectionate dormouse.” So Percy combined “Gliridae” (Latin for dormouse) with “Erastes” (Greek for lover) to create “Glirastes,” (meaning “lover of dormice.”)So now you know how Google's second-most-often-searched poem came to be published without anyone in London suspecting that it had been written on a bet with a friend by one of the most famous poets on earth who chose to sign it with a pseudonym as an inside joke to his wife.Did you know that I became an ad writer only because it was impossible to support myself as a poet? Now that you know that, you will not be surprised that Indy Beagle has collected Google's Top 20 Poems for you to read in the rabbit hole. Indy also found the Horace Smith version of Ozymandias, and added it at the end of the Google's Top 20 list.To enter the rabbit hole, all you have to do is click the image that appears at the top of today's Monday Morning Memo. Go to google.com. 2. Scroll to the gray footer section at the bottom of the page. 3. On the bottom right, click on Settings. 4. From the settings menu, select Advanced Search. ◦ The direct link provided in the session is: google.com/advanced_search.• Google's Broader Initiatives: Favour encourages a deeper look at Google's footer content, pointing out links that reveal the company's operational principles and corporate goals, such as How Search Works (which details organizing information, ranking, testing, and spam detection) and a section on sustainability, which states a goal to "collectively reduce 1 gigaton of their carbon equivalent emissions annually by 2030."Case Study: SEO Strategy for a "Horror Filmmaker"The session's central tutorial is a live case study using a search term provided by a participant, "P," who identifies as a "disabled horror filmmaker."• Initial Search Analysis: ◦ A standard Google search for horror filmmaker yields results focused on popular movies and lists of famous male directors (e.g., "the best horror film um directors"). ◦ Google's auto-complete suggestions include related commercial and informational queries like horror filming techniques, horror movie structure, and horror movie checklist.• Using Advanced Search: ◦ Favour inputs "horror filmmakers" into the "this exact word or phrase" field in Advanced Search. This action automatically wraps the term in quotation marks in the standard search bar, significantly refining the results.• Identifying a Niche Opportunity: ◦ The speaker observes a critical gap in the search results: "I noticed that out of all these names that I see, there's no woman that is on the list." ◦ This observation is corroborated by Google's suggested search bubbles, which include terms like list, female, and top. The primary search result for "female horror directors" is from Rotten Tomatoes.• Strategic Recommendations for "P": ◦ Content Creation: It is recommended that "P" create content pillars on her website focused on female horror directors and related topics from the "People also ask" section of Google's results. This would help establish her as an authority in an underserved niche. ◦ Market Share: The goal of this content strategy is to capture a "market share" of the search traffic for these terms. By creating articles like "Here are some influential horror filmmakers we have in our time," her brand can appear alongside established names. ◦ Commercial Intent: The strategy aims to convert informational searches into commercial opportunities. After providing valuable information, the website can prompt visitors to "Book a call with us" or inquire about "horror filmmaking services."Thank you for listening to this episode!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
