Welcome back to Ditch the Lab Coat, the podcast where we break down the fascinating world of medicine with a blend of scientific skepticism and real-world insight. In today's episode, we dive deep into the mysteries of the vagus nerve—a nerve so ancient and essential, it's been called the “conductor” in the symphony of human physiology.Join host Dr. Mark Bonta as he sits down with Dr. Kevin Tracey, neurosurgeon, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, and a pioneer in the world of bioelectronic medicine. Dr. Tracey's breakthrough research has shown us that the vagus nerve is far more than just a conduit for signals—it's a key player in managing inflammation, regulating our immune system, and maybe even shaping the future of medicine. In this conversation, you'll explore the mind-bending complexity of the nervous system, discover how cutting-edge science is redefining how we treat diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and long Covid, and learn how a tiny chip implanted in the neck might one day replace whole classes of immune-suppressing drugs. Dr. Tracey shares metaphors, straight talk about medical myths, and a vision for a future where reprogramming the body's reflexes could offer relief to millions.Get ready for a journey that's equal parts awe-inspiring and practical, as we unpack the true potential (and real-world considerations) of harnessing the vagus nerve's power. Whether you're a healthcare professional, a science nerd, or just someone searching for new answers, this episode invites you to see medicine in a whole new way. It's a soft place to land when things just feel too heavy to carry. In this practice, we acknowledge what's present in the body and slowly invite rest into the nervous system, not to fix or change anything, but simply to make room for peace, ease, and love to coexist with whatever is already here. Even in the midst of discomfort, tenderness, stillness, and peace is still possible. Better days are ahead. This meditation is here to meet you exactly where you are. To hold you in compassion, & to remind you that you are not alone. You are so worthy of rest, gentleness, and love, especially now. This practice invites you to come exactly as you are. And a lot of people get this very confused. You don't have to be successful to be a high achiever.” “A healthy mind is like a mansion … big open space, private rooms … If something happens and you can't deal with it, you put it in a room and close the door. Later, you open it, bring it out, and process it. A healthy mind knows when to suppress and when to process.” “You can't lead others unless you take care of yourself. You're not going to lead anyone if you die of a heart attack. You have to have integrity with yourself, learn how to be honest with yourself, and know where you need help, where you need to work, and where you need to grow.” “Your life is determined by what you believe… If you believe that you've got something great in you that needs to be shared, then there's something great in you that needs to be shared.” “People die every day because they don't know that their chronic illness is tied to their traumatic events.” “There's a difference between thinking something and believing something.” “Don't get coached by somebody who isn't being coached.” “It's very easy to feel like you're alone as an entrepreneur, especially if you're not surrounded by them.” “Don't pretend to be something you're not.” BOOKS MENTIONED: Letting Go, Finding You: Uncover Your Truest Self through the Enneagram and Contemplation by Hunter Mobley (https://a.co/d/eOuafdq) The Discovery Of The Unconscious by Henri F. We explore the often-overlooked micro-traumas of chronic illness—how the real devastation often hits not during the big diagnosis moment, but in quiet daily realizations like the day you can't hold a spoon or write in a journal the way you used to.In this episode, we discuss:Why the recovery period after treatment can actually be the hardest timeThe unique challenges of having symptoms without a diagnosisHow to work with "different versions of yourself" each day using Emma's "money in your purse" approach to energy managementWhy our goals often need to shift from doing more to doing lessHow family and friends can unintentionally add to trauma through well-meaning but invalidating responsesEmma offers practical guidance for both those living with chronic illness and the people who want to support them, emphasizing that there's no universal experience of illness and the most powerful thing we can offer is simply asking and listening rather than assuming we know what someone needs.MEET DESTINY: Website / Instagram / BlueSky / YouTube / TikTokMEET EMMA: WebsiteSIGN UP FOR OUR NEXT LIVE WORKSHOP→Nervous System-Informed Care for Living With A Chronic Illness

What if the key to healing chronic illness wasn't found in a pill bottle, but in the same frequencies that naturally flow from the sun? In this illuminating episode of HEAL with Kelly, I sit down with Robby Besner, Chief Science Officer and co-founder of Therasage, whose personal journey from desperate father to wellness pioneer has revolutionized how we think about detoxification and healing. Over 25 years ago, when his daughter was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease, Robby watched conventional treatments drain their finances while providing minimal relief. Frustrated and determined, he dove deep into research and discovered the profound healing power of infrared frequencies — the same therapeutic wavelengths our bodies have evolved to receive from natural sunlight. You'll learn how infrared sauna therapy works differently than traditional sauna therapy, why regular detoxification practices are paramount in today's toxic world, and how subtle shifts — like sequencing your healing protocols — can make a profound impact on outcomes. Robby also unpacks the science behind bio-resonance, vibrational healing, and the hidden link between inflammation, toxicity, and cellular repair.   Whether you're dealing with chronic illness, seeking daily wellness optimization, or simply curious about the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern technology, this conversation will transform how you think about your body's innate ability to heal. In this mini episode, Dr. Aimie answers a listener's question about the biological mechanisms connecting early attachment trauma to autoimmunity, and most importantly, what to do about it. She goes into the biology behind how childhood fear literally programs your immune system at the cellular level, creating a biological foundation for autoimmune conditions that can emerge years or decades later, often triggered by additional stressors like accidents, infections, or major life events. You'll learn more about:  Why fear causes inflammation How early fear creates overactive brain immune cells (microglia) that cause symptoms like brain fog and decision fatigue  The three key immune system pathways that determine whether your body stays in "inflammation mode" or switches to "repair mode" Practical actions you can take to rebalance your immune system Whether you're a practitioner working with autoimmune clients or someone with your own autoimmune journey, this episode reveals the hidden biological connections between early life experiences and immune dysfunction and offers hope through practical interventions that work at the cellular level. Episode Description:If you've ever wondered what happens when a Bronx-born pediatric nurse with stage 4 colon cancer survives, raises a kid, becomes a policy shark, and fights like hell for the ignored, meet Vanessa Ghigliotty. She's not inspirational. She's a bulldozer. We go way back—like pre-Stupid Cancer back—when there was no “young adult cancer movement,” just a handful of pissed-off survivors building something out of nothing. This episode is personal. Vanessa and I built the plane while flying it. She fought to be heard, showed up in chemo dragging her kid to IEP meetings, and never stopped screaming for the rest of us to get what we needed. We talk war stories, progress, side-eyeing advocacy fads, TikTok activism, gatekeeping, policy wins, and why being loud is still necessary. And yeah—she's a damn good mom. Probably a better one than you. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll want to scream into a pillow. Come for the nostalgia. Stay for the righteous anger and iced coffee.RELATED LINKSVanessa on LinkedInColorectal Cancer Alliance: Vanessa's StoryZenOnco Interview with VanessaFEEDBACKLike this episode? Many people push others away while desperately craving connection. Others battle chronic pain, digestive issues, or autoimmune conditions that seem to have no clear cause. But why is this? The answer often lies in unresolved childhood attachment trauma, specifically the experiences we had before we had words to make sense of them. This is why someone can have what looks like a good childhood but still struggle with anxiety, digestive problems, chronic pain, or autoimmune issues as an adult. The body remembers what the mind has forgotten. In this episode, Dr. Aimie breaks down the biology of early emotional pain and how it becomes stored in the body as chronic symptoms later in life. You'll discover the six core attachment wounds, why the body learns to stay in survival mode, how unresolved early trauma shapes your nervous system, immune system, and relationships in adulthood,  and most importantly, how to become your own safe person. You'll learn: [2:08] Why babies need to be held to survive and what happens when they're not [8:45] How to recognize if "it's not safe to relax" is your core attachment pattern [11:35] The health impacts of early attachment trauma [15:20]How fear becomes stored in the body as inflammation and chronic illness [20:49] The six core attachment wounds that shape our nervous system and relationships [25:30] How childhood wounds create the belief "I'm not capable" and lead to chronic overwhelm [30:08] The surprising link between people-pleasing and chronic pain [32:45] How brain fog, histamine intolerance, and depression can stem from attachment wounds [37:50] The three-phase roadmap to safely heal stored trauma in the body Whether you're someone living with unexplained chronic health issues or a practitioner supporting clients who seem stuck, this episode will help you understand the deep connection between childhood trauma, nervous system dysregulation, and adult symptoms and what it really takes to heal.   Helpful Links Related To This Episode: Biology of Trauma book - how the body experiences and holds fear, pain and overwhelm, and how to heal. Chris Gloude, APRN, has been a nurse practitioner for 6 years. Prior to that, he worked as a paramedic and nurse, with a total of 17 years of experience in the medical field. He currently practices in cardiology and also has experience in internal medicine. Chris has personally struggled with obesity since childhood. His journey with the ketogenic and later carnivore diet began after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2015. He was initially prescribed oral medications, which only worsened his symptoms. It wasn't until a colleague introduced him to the ketogenic diet that he began to feel better. Over the years, he followed the diet intermittently but consistently felt his best while adhering to it. In addition to his physical health challenges, Chris also struggled with depression and anxiety, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, he was prescribed Lexapro and Xanax. It wasn't until he fully embraced the ketogenic lifestyle that he was able to successfully wean off these medications and achieve lasting improvements in both his physical and mental health. Chris is currently working in cardiology, a field where the ketogenic diet is often viewed with skepticism. However, he draws from his personal and professional experience to take a different approach. He incorporates knowledge of nutrition, stress management, and overall health to engage patients in meaningful conversations about the root causes of their symptoms. Rather than defaulting to testing or medication, he prioritizes lifestyle changes and shared decision-making to create a more personalized and sustainable path to wellness.
