Can a carbon-negative, bio-based molecule replace legacy phosphonates and help you use less azole—without sacrificing corrosion performance? In this episode, host Trace Blackmore, CWT, welcomes Matheus Paschoalino, PhD Senior Business Development Manager and Microbial Control SME of Solugen, to unpack polyhydroxycarboxylic acids (PHCs) and how they're changing cooling-water programs from the field up. We cover HEDP replacement in light-duty systems, azole enhancement in copper-challenged waters, a second-generation cut for heavy-duty heat flux, and PHC behavior with oxidizers and non-oxidizer biocides.  From Bioforge to Basin: How PHCs Are Made and Why It Matters  Paschoalino explains Solugen's chemo-enzymatic “Bioforge” approach that oxidizes sugars (corn-syrup feedstock) into PHCs with very high yield and no practical byproducts—a pathway validated as carbon-negative. He outlines how different “cuts” (monoacid-rich vs. diacid-rich) map to different use cases, and notes current manufacturing capacity and adoption across hundreds of towers.  Replacing HEDP in Light-Duty Programs  For hospitals, HVAC, and other light-duty systems, PHCs have fully replaced HEDP as the anodic corrosion inhibitor while keeping PBTC for scale, enabling lower total phosphorus formulations with equal or better performance compared to status-quo organics.  Azole Enhancement, Free Copper, and Real-World Cost  Field work showed PHCs chelate metals quickly, protecting azole demand when free copper is present (e.g., after oxidizer flushing) and reducing expensive azole overdosing. One university case dropped an adjunct 8-ppm azole feed by pairing the base 3–4 ppm azole with PHC, yielding both corrosion control and lower discharge costs.  Second-Generation PHCs for Heavy-Duty Heat Flux (Toward “Neutral Phosphorus”)  At higher heat flux and stabilized-phosphate conditions, a diacid-rich second-generation PHC proved more stable, enabling orthophosphate reduction and opening a path toward “neutral phosphorus” programs that leverage background phosphate in municipal make-up. Bench data also show synergy with trace metals (e.g., zinc).  Biocide Potentiation and Where It Works Best PHCs remain stable with oxidizers like chlorine dioxide and bleach. Their most compelling synergy shows up with non-oxidizers and peracetic acid (PAA): as a biocide potentiator, PHCs can reduce the need to overdose actives such as THPS, glutaraldehyde, quats, and DBNPA by first complexing interfering metals (e.g., Fe/FeS), letting the biocide perform as intended.  Not “Bug Food”: Pilot Cooling Towers and Oxidizer Demand  To address the industry's biggest concern with bio-based chemistries, Solugen ran side-by-side outdoor pilot cooling towers under identical bleach control. Result: comparable oxidizer usage and consistently low counts versus HEDP—evidence that PHCs don't fuel biofilm.  Chelation Mechanics, Polymer Savings, and White Rust  PHCs chelate beyond acid-group stoichiometry thanks to multiple hydroxyls and conformational effects—critical for controlling dissolved metals and protecting films. In stressed heat-flux/chlorine conditions, PHCs reduced calcium-phosphate fouling versus HEDP, often allowing polymer dosage cuts. Early data also show promise for white-rust mitigation on galvanized systems, with the diacid-rich cut delivering the strongest reductions.  For practitioners, the message is pragmatic: PHCs aren't “lab curiosities.” They're fielded at scale, enabling lower-phosphorus programs, protecting costly azole inventories, widening the operational window under oxidizer stress, and potentiating select biocides—while staying compatible with common metals. If you manage cooling assets under cost, compliance, and performance pressure, this episode gives you a clear technical playbook to evaluate.  Listen now, review the papers in the show notes, and test a pilot where it counts—on your heat exchangers.  Stay engaged, keep learning, and continue scaling up your knowledge!    Timestamps  02:15 - Trace Blackmore shares a quick personal open: spotting the Goodyear Blimp (100th anniversary), using memories as fuel rather than limits, and a mindset reset around the word “can't.”  06:42 - Upcoming Events for Water Treatment Professionals   09:23 - Water You Know with James McDonald  11:41 - Interview with Matheus Paschoalino, Senior Business Development Manager and Microbial Control SME of Solugen  12:02 - HEDP replacement in light-duty programs; lower total phosphorus without losing performance  19:13 - Heavy-duty heat flux: second-generation (diacid-rich) PHCs and reducing orthophosphate  20:39 - “Neutral phosphorus” approach  27:42 - Biocide potentiation: synergy with PAA; strongest effects with non-oxidizers (e.g., THPS)  33:03 - “Bug food?” Pilot side-by-side cooling towers (Houston)  37:39 - HEDP systems fouled with calcium phosphate while PHC system showed only minor patching (CTI paper)  41:44 - Early evidence: white-rust mitigation on galvanized systems (seeking field partners)    Quotes  “Use your past as history, not as a limiter.” - Trace Blackmore  “Plan where you'll be; you never know what you'll learn or who you'll meet.” - Trace Blackmore   “First-gen PHCs let us replace HEDP in light-duty programs and keep performance with lower total phosphorus.” - Matheus Paschoalino  “Non-oxidizing biocides work best with PHCs—we target the metals first so you stop over-dosing the biocide.” - Matheus Paschoalino  “We like to be very conservative… we start with the laboratory; we start with light duty. Pete describes how he initially wanted to be an entrepreneur, but after a stint in the military, he ended up co-founding a document destruction business with his brother, an experience which taught him the realities of running a company which then led to an opportunity to join his family's business. In our conversation, Pete reveals how he worked his way up through the organization, eventually becoming President and then CEO when the company was sold to Securian in 2004. He discusses the importance of understanding a business from the ground up and how that has made him a stronger and more effective leader. He also discusses the various services Allied Solutions provides to credit unions, from generating non-interest fee income to asset recovery management. He highlights the company's focus on trust in its partnerships, openly sharing financial details to build long-term relationships. As we wrap up, Pete touches upon his deep admiration for his mom and shares insights into leadership, work-life balance, and the importance of gratitude and positivity. Jimmy Kimmel is currently on indefinite leave from his late-night show after a string of events involving remarks he made about Charlie Kirk, a response from the FCC, and a decisive call from Disney leadership. This all unfolded quickly and, frankly, explosively. Brendan Carr of the FCC went on Benny Johnson's podcast and said Kimmel's comments were some of the “sickest stuff” he's heard — and strongly implied that the FCC could take action against affiliate stations airing the show. That's not subtle, and even if Carr didn't spell out a punishment, the intent was clear enough to light a fire. What wasn't initially emphasized — but I think is even more relevant — is what Carr said at the end of that podcast appearance. He laid the pressure squarely on affiliate stations, reminding them that it's their licenses that are under the FCC's purview. And it wasn't long before two affiliate groups, Nexstar and Sinclair, pulled Kimmel from their airwaves. That's a big move. Deadline later reported that Disney's Dana Walden personally told Kimmel his show would be preempted. Sources say Kimmel refused to apologize, and Disney feared that letting him go further might make the controversy even worse.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Disney's version, delivered through Deadline, painted it as a measured decision — that they were protecting Kimmel from himself. But the reality is, affiliate pressure likely had more to do with this than the FCC ever did. Nexstar, for example, owns affiliates in places like Hartford, Augusta, Rockford, and Sioux City. These aren't New York or LA. These are markets where a majority of the viewership is conservative. Nexstar and Sinclair didn't just blink. They jumped — and demanded an apology and even donations to Turning Point USA before they'd consider letting Kimmel back on air. That's not just a request. That's an ultimatum.Capitol Hill responded almost immediately. Eric Swalwell wore a Jimmy Kimmel hat on CNN. Jasmine Crockett called for his return. The concern from Democrats is clear — they see this as a chilling of speech, a federal agency leaning on a private company to silence a critical voice. And Kimmel has long been one of the most visible anti-Trump figures in mainstream media. This isn't out of nowhere. It's part of a longer arc — one that started when his monologues became Claptor-heavy political salvos, and even his own writers started peeling off. Here's what I think. Carr's comments went too far. I've listened to that podcast more than once. Maybe he meant to be more cautious, but it didn't land that way. When you hold a job like FCC commissioner, your words carry weight — and in this case, they were taken very seriously. That said, I also don't think this was a one-man takedown. Kimmel has probably been a thorn in the side of these affiliate stations for years. This may have just been the opportunity they were waiting for. These affiliate networks serve a lot of red-leaning districts. That's just reality. And when Kimmel's show becomes a lightning rod, they have every incentive to bail — especially when broadcast TV isn't the financial powerhouse it used to be. ABC and Disney might be saying they want Kimmel back on air, but I think they're daring him to quit. This could easily end with a quiet settlement and a new direction for the network. Twenty-two years is a long time. Maybe too long for a show that's increasingly out of step with its audience — or at least the parts of it that keep the lights on in places advertisers care about. If this had happened in 2017, I think Disney would have fought. They would have leaned into the resistance branding, defended Kimmel publicly, and gone head-to-head with the FCC. But the landscape has shifted. Those same resistance-aligned outlets that thrived post-2016 have been struggling for attention ever since 2024. Maybe this isn't a cave to authoritarian pressure. Maybe it's just chasing a different audience — one that wants less fire and more quiet. Either way, the message is clear. Kimmel's position isn't as solid as it used to be. And neither is the appetite for that kind of voice on network television.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:04:17 - Jimmy Kimmel00:31:57 - Update00:32:50 - Eleanor Norton00:34:01 - Tariffs Head to Supreme Court00:35:33 - Erika Kirk00:38:06 - Interview with Michael Cohen01:42:11 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. WE'RE BACK TO THE RE-WATCH THIS WEEK, REFINER!!Interviews are fun, and we love talking to the folks who make 'Severance' so incredible, but, we should never forget, this podcast was built on insanely detailed rewatches!! This week we are getting back into the S2 complete 'Severed' Re-watch with PART ONE of "Sweet Vitriol."We have not heard or seen anything from Harmony Cobel since her very scary parking lot run-in with Helena Eagan and her gorilla of a driver in the episode "Who is Alive?" Guess what??!! Harmony made the trip to Salt's Neck! In this episode, we catch up with her out on the road. She's headed back to where she grew up. She's needing some things she left at home back when she was whisked away to be a star at the Myrtle Eagan School for Girls. This time out we meet up with Hampton at the Drippy Pot. He's one of Cobel's oldest and dearest friends. He's also in the grip of a massive ether addiction, much like the rest of this tiny and dilapidated town. Oh, and if you're in need of ether, Hampton can set you up. As Sissy calls him, he's a 'huff peddler.'Oh, yeah...Sissy. We're going to meet Harmony's Aunt Celestine 'Sissy' Cobel. She's Harmony's mother Charlotte's sister. Sissy does NOT have a warm spot in her heart for Harmony, Hampton or this backwards little town on the seashore where she feels trapped by her beliefs. Or, maybe she does still feel some kinship with Harmony...she's just not willing to show it.It's time to hop in the VW Rabbit and head for the chilly coast of P.E. as we open the file called "Sweet Vitriol." What's At Stake In Changes To Medicare and Medicaid: Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, Senior Fellow at The Century Foundation

“When you think about where we were as a country before Medicare and Medicaid were created and where we are now, it's an incredible story,” says Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, who until earlier this year was the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In a recent essay for The Century Foundation, where she is now a senior fellow, Brooks-LaSure used the 60th anniversary of enactment of those foundational insurance programs to help put their impact on individual Americans, the healthcare system and society at large in perspective. One prominent example is the desegregation of hospitals, which was achieved in part by withholding reimbursements for care unless facilities served Blacks as well as whites. Another is making it possible for more people with disabilities to live at home instead of in institutional settings. But as you'll hear in this probing Raise the Line conversation with host Lindsey Smith, Brooks-LaSure worries that many gains in coverage and other progress made over the years through Medicare, Medicaid and the Child Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are at risk because of a new federal law that calls for a trillion dollar decrease in spending, resulting in potentially millions of people losing their coverage, cuts to clinical staff and medical services, and the closure of hospitals and clinics, especially in rural areas. “Most rural hospitals in this country are incredibly dependent on both Medicare and Medicaid to keep their doors open and there's an estimate that over 300 hospitals will close as a result of this legislation, so that, I think, is a place of incredible nervousness.” Whether you are a patient, provider, policymaker or health system leader, this is a great opportunity to learn from an expert source about the range of potential impacts that will flow from changes to critically important insurance programs that provide coverage to 40% of adults and nearly 50% of children in the U.S. Mentioned in this episode:The Century FoundationEssay on 60th Anniversary of Medicare & Medicaid If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. Acceptance is a crucial leadership quality that involves recognizing our personal agency. Reframing complaints can turn barriers into opportunities for growth. Asking core questions can help clarify our thoughts and actions in challenging situations. Foundational practices are essential for effective leadership and personal growth. Embracing discomfort is necessary for growth and development. Visibility in leadership requires intentionality and authenticity. Time management beliefs can limit our effectiveness; reframing them can empower us.
