Philip Taylor started FinCon because he was tired of talking to his spouse about business ideas that didn't quite land. He needed someone to really riff off of, someone who understood the mission. His first WordPress conference back in 2004 validated him as an entrepreneur in a way he didn't expect. The relationships he formed there? He still relies on some of them today. Philip gets real about walking into rooms where you don't know anyone and why that awkwardness might actually be the point.Conferences aren't inexpensive when you factor in flights, hotels, and all the extras. But Philip sees them as an investment and shares practical ways to cut costs, but he also talks about something we don't discuss enough: the lifetime value of those connections. He still laughs about memories from conferences years ago. What value can you place on that kind of connection? In this week's episode, Philip makes a case for why being busy actually makes conferences more valuable. It's a forcing function that pulls you out of the grind and puts you in CEO mode for a few days. That reset helps you see your business differently. If you think you're not far enough along yet, Philip has news for you. There are always people at conferences who don't have a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel yet. They're just there to soak it all up. Your job is to find those people. This conversation covers territory that anyone considering their first conference needs to hear, from someone who's created one of the biggest conferences in our space.Links & Resources:Ultimate Growth GuideJoin the Facebook groupFinCon Expo (Use code kelsa50 for $50 off!)Key Takeaways:Find your inner circle by choosing conferences where attendees share your mission because they're just as tired of talking to their spouse about ideas that don't land as you are.Volunteer at the event to bake in networking before the conference even starts. You'll meet speakers, organizers, and other volunteers while having a purpose beyond just attending. The lifetime value of one conference connection can pay for the entire trip. Philip still relies on relationships from his first WordPress conference in 2004.Too busy? That's exactly why you need the forcing function of a conference to pull you out of worker bee mode and into CEO mode for a few days.Google can't break down exactly how someone implemented their strategy, but the person sitting next to you at lunch can (and they might even pull up their laptop to show you).If you think you're not ready, find the other people who aren't ready either and form a mastermind together.Conference speakers update their slides last minute with cutting-edge information, so you're getting current strategies, not outdated online content.
What if the very system we rely on to motivate teams and measure success is actually holding us back? Many leaders find their teams can hit targets but still feel stuck, which points to a fundamental flaw in how we approach performance management.Traditional goal-setting methodologies like OKRs and KPIs, while well-intentioned, often create unintended consequences that work against the very outcomes they're designed to achieve. The incentive structure encourages showing good numbers while sweeping problems under the rug, giving leaders the illusion of progress rather than real visibility.Find the full show notes at: https://workmatters.com/Why-Your-Goal-Setting-Fails-Escaping-the-Performance-Trap-with-Radhika-Dutt
Karl Vaters talks with Luke Simmons, the pastor of Ironwood Church in Mesa, AZ. Recently, Luke and his church elders decided to pursue a very ambitious goal with the aim of helping their large, growing congregation feel smaller and more connected. As a big-church pastor, Luke is not a typical Church Lobby guest, but he and Karl follow each other on X (formerly Twitter) and when Luke posted about this plan it inspired a lot of questions and curiosity. The plan is for the members of their elder team to have one-on-one meetings with 1,000 church members over coffee or a meal this coming year.If those numbers make you feel like this isn't for you, give it a chance. Luke has a heart for people, and he's interested in how to set numerical goals that help us reach non-numerical objectives of discipleship, fellowship, and service.Links:Luke's original X post about elder meeting goalsLuke's original X post about doing one-on-one meetingsFaithful and FruitfulTim Keller on Leadership and Church Size DynamicsDarrell Stetler's Sermon IllustratorFollow Luke on XIronwood ChurchBonus videoHow To Conduct An Annual Leadership Meeting, with Luke SimmonsKarl Vaters talks with Luke Simmons about some of the steps he follows to gain as much as possible from an annual leadership meeting with his church elders. #90: [Inside the Mind] Dr. Rick Sessinghaus: Resilience, Flow, Fear, and Harnessing the Dark Side In this powerful episode of The Scratch Golfer's Mindset Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Rick Sessinghaus—longtime mental coach to Collin Morikawa and one of the leading experts in golf psychology and flow state training. We explore the often-overlooked layers of resilience, how to avoid complacency after success, and the tools to shift from fear to flow under pressure. Rick shares actionable strategies, cutting-edge technology insights, and practical routines you can apply both on and off the course to perform your best when it matters most. In this episode, you'll learn: Why resilience is just as important after success as it is after setbacks. The subtle difference between mental toughness and resilience—and why it matters. How to shift from a fear state to a flow state under pressure. The role of curiosity in replacing judgment and accelerating learning. How sensory triggers and breath work can prime you for peak performance. The measurable impact of technology on training focus and emotional regulation. Why outcome goals and process goals can—and should—work together. Get your pencils ready and start listening. P.S. Curious to learn more about the results my clients are experiencing and what they say about working with me? Read more here. More About Rick Dr. Rick Sessinghaus is the Founder & CEO of Sessinghaus Performance Systems and Director of the FlowCode® Golf Academy. Instagram: @thegolfhypnotherapist Twitter: @parsoverbogeys Key Takeaways: Resilience is staying composed regardless of outcome—success can make you complacent, which requires just as much discipline to manage. Mental toughness is overrated. Emotional regulation, self-awareness, and curiosity are more sustainable mental skills. Flow happens when your perceived skill matches the challenge. Fear arises when you perceive the challenge as greater than your ability—even when it's not. You can train flow state through breathwork, anchoring routines, and sensory cues like music, temperature, or feel. Reflection—done without judgment—is essential. Curiosity > criticism. Technology like FocusCalm and Mendi can now measure brainwave activity and train real-time focus. Cold plunges and challenges off the course build resilience you can bring onto the course. It's okay to care about outcome—but learn to measure success through your process. You're good enough. That self-belief is the filter that colors every golf shot. Key Quotes: Resilience isn't just about bouncing back—it's about staying focused when things go well too. Curiosity over critical—that's our mantra for post-shot routines. Flow follows focus. You must train your attention to stay present. You're already good enough. Most golfers don't need more skill—they need more belief. Cold plunges aren't about golf—but they teach you how to do hard things. That transfers. Don't just do a routine because your coach told you to—make sure it gets you calm, confident, and committed. Objectives and Key Results have long been a staple of the working world. You set a stretch objective, define the results that will tell you if the objective has been met, and scaffold throughout the organization. Then what? Often, nothing happens. The OKRs were too vague. In extreme cases, the worst happens: people bend the rules to hit aggressive targets. For author Radhika Dutt, there is another way: Objectives, Hypotheses, and Learnings (OHLs). In this week's episode of The Mindtools L&D Podcast, Radhika joins Gemma and Ross Garner to discuss: Why OKRs so often fail How OHLs prioritize a puzzle-solving mindset How to ensure OHLs don't lead to analysis paralysis Radhika offers an OHL toolkit at: radicalproduct.com/toolkit In 'What I Learned This Week', Ross G discussed 'parasocial relationships'. When Debbie White says coaches don't need to be louder or slicker to stand out, she means something that might feel backwards at first. After spending 20 years launching brands like Starbucks and building multiple seven-figure businesses, she's watched too many coaches try to sound like marketers instead of humans. The problem? People buy from people, not from polished marketing speak. And right now, there's so much formulaic content out there that it all sounds the same. Your ideal clients are scrolling past it because it feels like white noise.Debbie walks through her Lighthouse Effect concept—a way to get crystal clear on who you serve, what makes you different, and how to talk about it so your people think “Oh, it's you I've been looking for.” She talks about why being more yourself actually makes you magnetic to the right clients, and how repetition of the right message beats posting constantly with the wrong one.We get into the messy reality of finding your voice when you've been taught to sound professional. Debbie shares stories from her own clients—like the financial coach whose people said things like “looking at my numbers makes my throat tight” and “I'm terrified to check my credit card balance.” That's not budget management speak. That's real human fear, and when you can speak to that, everything changes. There's also an honest conversation about the COVID years and how they created this rise of formulaic business coaching that focused on revenue numbers instead of actually helping people build sustainable businesses. Debbie thinks we're seeing a backlash now—people are getting smarter about spotting content that doesn't feel real. She gives practical advice about creating content for one person instead of trying to talk to everyone. She explains why AI-generated content often falls flat and how to use it without sounding like every other coach out there. And she shares what she wishes every coach knew about their own value and why the world actually needs what they have to offer. If you've ever felt like you're blending in even though you know you have something unique, this conversation will help you figure out how to show up as yourself in a way that makes it ridiculously easy for the right people to find you.Links & Resources:Ultimate Growth GuideJoin the Facebook groupTake the persona quizVisit the Clarity Wins Clients websiteConnect with Debbie on LinkedInJoin the Lighthouse Marketing Facebook groupKey Takeaways:Stop trying to sound like a marketer and start sounding like a human. Because 95% of buying decisions happen in the emotional, subconscious part of our brain where we connect with real people, not polished marketing speak. The math is simple: Would you rather post generic content 20 times that gets ignored, or post one authentic piece that makes your ideal client think “that's exactly how I feel”?Your “professional mask” isn't protecting your credibility; it's making you invisible. When every coach sounds the same, being more of yourself becomes your competitive advantage. Here's what your clients are really saying: “I'm terrified to look at my numbers. It makes my throat tight.” Stop talking about “budget management” and start speaking to the actual fear keeping them up at night.

Welcome to the Purple Patch Podcast! This week, we're revisiting one of the most insightful interviews we've done here on the Purple Patch Podcast. In this episode, we're exploring the topic of mature athletes. These athletes are just as ambitious and goal-driven as younger ones, but they often have a deeper and more meaningful purpose beyond winning races and setting personal records. We received a great question from a podcast listener who has participated in triathlons for over 20 years. Despite still being ambitious, she now has three kids and is seeking advice on approaching the sport from a new perspective and adjusting her training. This is a common challenge for many athletes, not just in triathlon. We've dedicated a whole show to addressing this question and hopefully, we provide helpful guidance for any mature athlete looking to optimize their mindset, strategy, and training for performance gains. The episode is divided into three parts. The first part discusses "perspective" and building a new relationship with sports. It provides context for understanding how to adjust your approach to sports and how it may differ from your younger and more competitive years. Ever feel like you're putting everything into your business only to fall short of expectations? That's exactly where I found myself at the Skowhegan Fair this year. After days of watching people walk past my booth, enduring stretches of 5-6 hours without a single sale, I had to make a critical mental shift that entrepreneurs rarely talk about: redefining what success looks like mid-journey.When my original sales goals became clearly unattainable, I set new targets that would still represent meaningful progress rather than defeat. Fighting for every sale, I managed to hit my adjusted goal by exactly $50 in the final minutes of the fair's last day. This wasn't the triumph I'd initially imagined, but it taught me something profound about entrepreneurial resilience. The most valuable outcome wasn't financial at all, but the people I met – particularly Isaiah, an 18-year-old with exceptional work ethic who approached business with remarkable discipline. "For every hour I spend having fun," he told me, "I'll do one thing I don't want to do to build my business." His perspective was exactly the inspiration I needed while navigating my own challenges. As I prepare for the Windsor Fair and eventually Fryeburg (my season's biggest event), I'm facing serious inventory challenges and supplier delays. I've had to make tough decisions, including canceling a planned event to better position myself for success where it matters most. These choices reflect a maturing business perspective – understanding that courage isn't making one dramatic leap but taking consistent small steps forward despite fear and uncertainty. If you're fighting for your own business dreams right now, remember that perseverance often looks less like heroic victories and more like quiet determination to simply take the next step. Hey friends! Today, we are replaying one of my favorite past episodes, titled Reasons Equal Results. As we transition into a new season with kids going back to school and many of us ramping up our businesses, now is the perfect time to reflect on our why. Why is this important? Because having a strong, personal "why" can be the driving force that keeps us motivated, especially during those tough days when we might feel like giving up. Whether you are looking to grow your business, improve your health, or strengthen your relationships, understanding your core motivations can make all the difference. This episode is not just a replay; it's a reminder of the core concepts we discuss here on the podcast. I believe it will resonate with you, whether you're a long-time listener or new to our community. So grab a cup of coffee, find a cozy spot, and tune in!

What if pursuing your goals felt free, aligned, and way easier than you've been making it? You start with all this motivation, then suddenly your dreams feel more like burdens than possibilities.I was talking with someone inside Emotionally Empowered recently who's working full-time AND starting her master's program. She described her brain as "a ball of yarn" and said she felt like the clock was ticking on her dreams. After we journaled through it together, that tangled mess became clear direction and relief. This happens way more than you think. Our goals become sources of chaos instead of clarity because we've been taught that worthwhile dreams require struggle. What we're journaling through today:Why your goals might feel scarier to achieve than you realizeThe sneaky beliefs that make success feel impossibleHow overwhelm actually protects you from getting what you wantA completely different way to think about pursuing your dreams3 Journal Prompts (grab a notebook or just think through these):Prompt 1: Write down a goal you're currently working toward. Describe how you want to feel when you achieve it, then write how you actually feel right now while pursuing it.Prompt 2: Get brutally honest—what are you afraid would happen if you achieved this goal easily, without all the struggle? What if it didn't require sacrificing everything else you care about?Prompt 3: Complete this sentence: "I make my goals overwhelming because if I don't struggle enough, then..." (Whatever comes up first is usually the most honest answer.)Most of us unconsciously use overwhelm to prove we deserve our dreams. But what if Oprah was right when she said you'd never have a dream if you didn't already have everything needed to pursue it?Resources Mentioned:Calm Mind Blueprint: www.samanthapenkoff.com/calm-mind-podWays to work with Samantha:1:1 coaching: Now accepting applications, 1 spot open. Some conversations are uncomfortable, but avoiding them comes with a cost. You want a more successful career, a more fulfilling relationship, a more meaningful life? What if all that's standing in your way — are the conversations that you're avoiding?“Most things that we want in life are on the other side of a difficult conversation,” says Jenn Wynn, a professor at NYU Stern School of Business and previously the director of education at the Obama Foundation. For nearly 10 years, she has taught a course on difficult conversations that equips people to communicate through discomfort in pursuit of what they want. “Sometimes it's a difficult conversation with a loved one, a colleague, a boss… sometimes it's a difficult conversation with myself,” she says. “Are you going to give up on your biggest dreams because you weren't willing to step out of your comfort zone?”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Wynn and host Matt Abrahams discuss how to build the “hard but worth-it skills” necessary for difficult communication. Whether it's asking for a raise, setting boundaries, or addressing conflict, Wynn's insights show that the conversations you're avoiding aren't just holding you back — they're keeping you from the life you really want.To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Jenn WynnThe H.I. Episode Summary: This episode tackles the universal fear of an unknown future, anchored by a powerful quote from Steve Jobs: "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards." Randy and Greg explore why this uncertainty often paralyzes us, preventing us from taking the first step towards our goals. They discuss the importance of setting a crystal-clear vision, as taught by Earl Nightingale, and trusting that the necessary steps—the "dots"—will reveal themselves along the way. Listeners will learn why "failing fast" is a powerful strategy, how to leverage an inner circle for unbiased advice, and why your small, everyday decisions have a massive impact on your future. This conversation is a masterclass in learning to trust the process, even when you can't see the full path ahead. Key Takeaways: You don't need to see the entire path to your goal; you only need to take the next logical step with faith. Setting a crystal-clear goal is the most crucial first step, as it activates your mind to recognize opportunities and ideas that will help you achieve it. Overthinking and procrastination are often symptoms of wanting the security of a guaranteed outcome, which is impossible. "Failing fast" is an effective strategy to quickly learn if you are on the right path, rather than spending years on the wrong one. Your small, seemingly mundane daily decisions are the "dots" that create the full picture of your life in the future. Leveraging a trusted inner circle for advice is critical because they can offer a logical perspective free from the emotional attachment you have to your own situation. You must trust yourself and the process. Your past experiences don't dictate your future, but your decisions today do. Questions Answered in This Episode: What did Steve Jobs mean when he said you can only connect the dots looking backward? How do you move forward on a goal when you don't know all the steps involved? What is the first and most important step to take when pursuing a big goal? Why is it so hard to make decisions when the future is uncertain? How can the "fail fast" mentality help you achieve success more quickly? Why is it important to get an outside perspective from friends or mentors when making big decisions? How do your small, everyday choices impact your long-term future? What is the best way to handle the fear and self-doubt that come with chasing a big dream? Key People, Concepts, & Terms: People: Randy Wilson, Greg Junge, Steve Jobs, Earl Nightingale. Concepts: Connecting the Dots, Trusting the Process, Goal Setting, Clarity, Failing Fast, The Strangest Secret, Overthinking, Limiting Beliefs, Inner Circle/Mastermind, Personal Development. We spend so much of our lives chasing goals: big ones, small ones, some we barely remember choosing. But what if the goals we're working toward aren't really ours? This week on Hello Monday, Jessi Hempel sits down with neuroscientist and author Anne-Laure Le Cunff to talk about how we really achieve the lives we want to live. Anne-Laure is the founder of Ness Labs, a popular online school focused on mindful productivity for knowledge workers. Her new book, Tiny Experiments: How to Live Freely in a Goal-Obsessed World, offers an alternative to rigid goal-setting: a flexible, curiosity-driven approach to figuring out what matters most—through trial, reflection, and self-compassion. In today's episode, Jessi and Anne-Laure discuss: • Why we put too much pressure on “capital P” Purpose • How to design tiny experiments to better understand yourself • The role of curiosity in redefining ambition • The “Head, Heart, Hand” framework for navigating uncertainty • How to make peace with evolving priorities • The dangers of hustle culture, and how to opt out This conversation is a gentle invitation to slow down, reflect, and explore new ways of working that are more aligned with who you are rather than who you think you're supposed to be.
