Chapeau! Angepriesen als neuestes Werk der “unangefochtenen Königin des Strandbuches” Jennifer Weiner, die stattliche 15 No. 1 auf der Bestsellerliste der New York Times ihr Eigen nennen kann, und deren klassische Heldin in ihren eigenen Worten so charakterisiert wird: “ein glückliches Ende finden, während sie sich selbst treu bleibt.”Bei einem Werbeauftritt in Amerikas - meint hier The United States of - berühmtester Guten-Morgen-Fernsehshow “Good Morning America!” unterhält sich Autorin Jennifer Weiner einige kurze Minuten mit den 3 Hosts der Sendung über ihr gerade veröffentlichtes Werk “That Summer”, und wir erfahren:1. Jennifer Weiners Mutter ist vor kurzem gestorben, und eine der wichtigsten Lektionen, die sie von ihr gelernt hat, ist Body Positivity, also das Wohlsein im eigenen Körper, dessen Möglichkeiten kennend und wertschätzend, unabhängig davon, ob das heute zum Glück immer mehr schwindende Traummaß des 90-60-90 erreicht wird.2. Gefragt, warum ihre Heldinnen immer dem gleichen Muster zu folgen scheinen, antwortet sie mit einem Zitat von Toni Morrison, bei der sie auch mal einen Schreibkurs besucht hat: “Wenn es ein Buch gibt, dass du lesen musst, und es steht nicht in der Buchhandlung, musst du es selbst schreiben. (Ziemlich sicher gibt es eine bessere als diese sehr freie Übersetzung.)3. “That Summer” wurde während der Pandemie geschrieben, als sich Jennifer Weiner zu Hause mit ihrer Familie ununterbrochen konfrontiert sah und sich zu einem Platz schreiben wollte, den sie liebt. Voilá: Cape Cod.4. Zwei der Protagonistinnen sind 15 Jahre alt, so alt wie die Tochter der Autorin. Sie ansehend fragt sie sich: Hat sich die Welt geändert, seitdem ich in diesem Alter war? Habe ich mich geändert? Und wenn ja, ist es jetzt besser?5. Wenn es nicht besser ist, was muss getan werden, was muss ich tun, damit sie besser wird?Und weil die Show Good Morning America! heißt, lächeln alle in die Kamera, pandemiebedingt in 4 Kacheln und nicht im selben Raum. Jennifer Weiner hält noch kurz das Buch in die Kamera und winkt.Ähnlich war die Ankündigung des Buches auf einer der von mir frequentierten Empfehlungslisten. Could have fooled me! Hat es auch.Zurück zu 4. Ich nummeriere hier ja nicht umsonst: Hat sich die Welt geändert, und falls ja, ist es besser? Ja, vielleicht, hoffentlich, sonst könnte man den ganzen Bumms auch anzünden.Zurück zur eingangs erwähnten Marketingkampagne und einem radikalen Bruch mit Studio Bs nirgendwo niedergeschriebenem, mündlich aber öfter formulierten Anspruch, hier in denglish, DIE STORY NICHT ZU SPOILERN:Bei “That Summer” handelt es sich nicht um ein unbeschwertes Buch, das zur Sonnencremebeschmierten und zwischen den Seiten Sand ansammelnden Sommerlektüre empfohlen werden kann, weil der Plot den champagnerinduzierten Schwips verstärkt, auch wenn das in fast allen Empfehlungen und Besprechungen so erscheint.Und ein weiterer Beweis der These, dass Kritiker*innen nicht immer das rezensierte Werk tatsächlich auch - wenigstens ansatzweise und überfliegend - gelesen haben.“That Summer” ist die Geschichte zweier unterschiedlicher Frauen, beide heißen Diana, die eine wird Daisy genannt. Sie verfolgen geradezu konträre Lebensentwürfe. Während Diana als erfolgreiche Vertreterin durch die Staaten reist und ein luxuriöses Leben als Single führt, finden wir Diana, die sich als Kochlehrerin ein berufliches Standbein aufgebaut hat, als Organisatorin, Putzfrau, seelischer Mülleimer und mit dezenter Unaufmerksamkeit durch ihren ein paar Jahre älteren Ehemann Hal und mit offenerer Abneigung durch ihre 15jährige Tochter Beatrice bedachte, ein wenig einsame Frau, deren äußere Lebensumstände Zufriedenheit bringen sollten, sie aber zunehmend irritieren. Die beiden begegnen sich, weil Dianas Mails aufgrund eines Tippfehlers in der E-Mail-Adresse bei Daisy landen. Bei einem ersten Treffen der unterschiedlich situierten Frauen sind sich beide sympathisch, eine Freundschaft bahnt sich an.Der Plot von “That Summer” wird in 2 zeitlichen Linien entwickelt: rückblickend auf die Geschehnisse eines Sommers, eben “That Summer”, deren Protagonistin Diana ist, und in der Jetztzeit, mit reflektierenden Rückblicken auf Daisys Geschichte und immer weiteren Enthüllungen über Dianas Leben.Im Sommer 1987 hat Diana als 16jährige einen Sommer auf Cape Cod verbracht, als Aushilfe in einem befreundeten Haushalt. Erste Liebe zu einem Collegeboy, zum Abschluss des Aufenthalte eine Party, nach der sich Diana zunächst an nicht viel erinnern kann. Als die Erinnerungen an diese Nacht zurückkehren, wird ihr Leben ein anderes sein und werden: Sie wurde vergewaltigt, ein 2. Student hat sie festgehalten, ein Dritter zugesehen, aber nicht eingegriffen. Diana verlässt in der Folge die Schule ohne Abschluss und wird nie Kinder haben.Sprung in die Jetztzeit: Was Diana will, ist Rache. Der Beginn ihrer aufkeimenden Freundschaft mit Daisy ist zunächst vorgetäuscht. Durch einen Zufall hat sie ihren Vergewaltiger von damals wiedererkannt und möchte auch die Frau bestrafen, die in ihren Augen alles hat: eine Familie, eine Tochter. Zunehmend bekommt sie Skrupel, wird aber ihre Geschichte zu erkennen geben, mit weitreichenden Folgen.Das Buch stellt komplexe Fragen zur Verantwortung sexueller Übergriffe: nach der des Vergewaltigers, nach der der Eingeweihten. Es ist ein Werk über die Auswirkungen eines lange Jahre verheimlichten Angriffs auf das Leben der Beteiligten, die Macht und Auswirkungen von Rache. Wie hart sollen solche Verbrechen bestraft, oder sollten sie vergeben werden? Jennifer Weiner erwähnt explizit die me too Bewegung, die viele Frauen ermutigte und inspirierte, über ihre traumatischen, manchmal aber - und das ist fast unheimlicher - gewöhnlichen und als alltäglich wahrgenommenen Erfahrungen mit sexuellen Übergriffen und sexueller Gewalt zu sprechen und zu schreiben. Dabei finden sich in “That Summer” alle möglichen Formen, in denen diese gewaltvollen Erfahrungen in unserer Gesellschaft behandelt werden.Mannigfaltig sind die Entschuldigungsformeln: “Jungs müssen sich ihre Hörner abstoßen.” So formuliert es der alte Vater des Vergewaltigers oder auch kürzer “So sind junge Männer eben.”Dem Opfer wird eine Mitschuld gegeben: “Sie wusste doch, worauf sie sich einlässt, wenn sie auf die Abschlussparty des Sommers geht und dort auch noch Alkohol trinkt.”“Vielleicht hätte sie nicht so flirten sollen.”In den Diskussionen wird darauf hingewiesen, dass sich der damalige Täter von damals geändert hätte, und dass er vielleicht nicht so gehandelt hätte, wenn man ihm nicht die Möglichkeit gegeben hätte.Ein Grund, der letztendlich sowohl Diana als auch Daisy in ihrem Umgang mit den Folgen der Vergewaltigung zur Offenheit zwingt, ist Daisys 15jährige Tochter. Der drohende Schrecken sich immer wiederholender Ereignisse führt beide dazu, über die Ereignisse dieses Sommers zu sprechen.Nun ist natürlich die Frage, warum “That Summer” noch in diesem - mittlerweile doch abgekühlten - Sommer gelesen werden sollte: Jennifer Weiner hat einen Roman geschrieben, der sich mit überraschenden Wendungen einem schwierigen Teil unserer Gesellschaft nähert. “That Summer” ist leicht zu lesen, aber keine einfache Lektüre. Wie auch, wenn die Auswirkungen einer Vergewaltigung für die Betroffenen lang und traumatisch sind, die niemals vollkommen geheilt werden können und ein anderes Leben erzwingen? Jennifer Weiner nähert sich der komplexen Thematik nuanciert und präzise, aber nicht reißerisch oder polemisch.Ihr Verdienst ist es, die Möglichkeiten zu zeigen, die eine sich verändernde Gesellschaft bietet und die Kraft weiblicher Freundschaften zu feiern. Das mögen manche als kitschig empfinden, ist aber einer der Gründe, warum der Bums hier noch nicht brennt.Im Internet (wo sonst?) wurde “That Summer” kontrovers diskutiert. Es wurde auf einige Inkonsistenzen hingewiesen, im Wesentlichen hangelten sich gelegentliche Kritiken an den entschuldigenden Argumentationslinien der Vergewaltiger und ihrer Kompliz*innen entlang, eine politische Agenda der Verrisse war dabei oft unverkennbar.“That Summer” und die Diskussion könnte - wieder einmal - ein Anstoß sein, über unsere Gesellschaft zu sprechen und zwar miteinander. Als die me too Bewegung bzw. die Berichte und Auswirkungen - Stichwort Cancel Culture unsere Breitengrade erreichte, wurden in meinem Bekanntenkreis in den diversen Bars und Kneipen der Stadt viele erhitzte Diskussionen geführt, deren Schwerpunkt immer Fragen waren, ob es wirklich gerechtfertigt sei, dass z. B. ein begabter Schauspieler seine Jobs infolge von Anschuldigungen verliert, obwohl noch kein Gericht seine Schuld festgestellt hat. Nie, wirklich nie, wurde mir oder den anwesenden Freundinnen und Frauen die Frage gestellt, was denn unsere Erfahrungen sind. Versuche, über die Kultur sexueller Übergriffe und Vergewaltigungen und ihre Folgen und Auswirkungen zu sprechen, hat es immer wieder gegeben. In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten gab es immer wieder Berichte und Studien, immer schockierend, in welcher Vielzahl und Gewöhnlichkeit diese Übergriffe erfolgen.Ich bin es satt. Ich habe keine, wirklich gar keine Lust, über die Folgen für die Vergewaltiger und Arschgrapscher zu sprechen. Es ist mir egal, ob sie Freundinnen und Freunde und Jobs und eine Karriere und den Respekt der Gesellschaft verlieren und ob sie vor den Enthüllungen in ihrer Profession die Kunst auf eine neue Stufe gehoben haben. Immer und immer wieder kommen Männer mit ihrem übergriffigen Verhalten durch. Der letzte US-Präsident ist dabei nur ein besonders krasses Beispiel, gewählt wurde er trotzdem, auch von der Mehrheit der weißen Frauen. Es sind nicht nur Länder wie Indien oder der südamerikanische Kontinent, in dem diese Übergriffe stattfinden. Es sind eure Freundinnen, eure Nachbarinnen, die Barkeeperinnen, die Kolleginnen. Sie alle haben diese Geschichten auf Lager, der einzige Ausweg ist, den Mund aufzumachen und die Gesellschaft und ihre Institutionen zu zwingen, die Täter zu hindern und zu bestrafen. Bevor ihr das nächste Mal über einen “gecancelten” oder mit Vorwürfen konfrontieren Schauspieler sprechen möchtet, fragt sie lieber, wie es ihnen bisher so ergangen ist (und seid nicht enttäuscht, wenn sie nicht darüber sprechen wollen).Am Ende vom Tag können doch alle froh sein, dass die meisten keine Rache, sondern nur Respekt und Gleichberechtigung wollen.Warum diesmal dieser Rant? Dazu hat mich die Lektüre von Jennifer Weiners “That Summer” getrieben. Ein Roman, der Auswirkungen hat. This is a public episode. Der Sommer neigt sich schon langsam wieder dem Ende zu und das Studio B Kollektiv ist aus dem Urlaub zurück, den ich für meinen Teil dazu genutzt habe, endlich eine lang geplante Reise zu unternehmen. Das Ziel: die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Vor nunmehr fast drei Jahren entschlossen sich zwei mir sehr lieb gewonnene Menschen, Deutschland den Rücken zu kehren und ihr Leben in den USA fortzusetzen. Damit stand für mich schnell fest, dass ich sie eines Tages dort besuchen würde und so begann ich – mit den ersten fünf Dollar, die ich als Trinkgeld bekam – meine Spardose allmählich zu füllen, um mir diesen Traum zu verwirklichen. Schon längst hätte ich bzw. hätten wir diese Reise angetreten, wenn nicht äußere Umstände dies immer wieder verzögert hätten. Doch Anfang August war es endlich soweit und die Frage nach der Urlaubslektüre war ebenfalls so gesetzt wie das Reiseziel. Heiko Schramm, auch bekannt als Hesh, geschätzter Freund und ehemaliges Studio B Mitglied empfahl nicht nur mir, sondern auch Irmgard Lumpini und Herrn Falschgold, einen Roman der Autorin Jeanine Cummins und ich dachte mir, was könnte passender sein, als nach Amerika zu reisen und ein Buch mit dem Titel American Dirt zu lesen.Im Jahr 2020 erschien Jeanine Cummins Roman American Dirt sowohl im englischen Original als auch in deutscher Übersetzung im Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag. Während ich in den Flieger steige und es mir bequem mache, mir noch einen Schal und eine Strickjacke aus dem Handgepäck zurecht lege, damit ich während des Fluges nicht friere und dem Beginn einer komfortablen Reise entgegenblicke, beginnt für die Protagonisten in Cummins' Roman ein Albtraum, der ihr Leben komplett verändern und sie ebenfalls auf eine Art Reise schicken wird, die sich grundlegend von der meinigen unterscheidet, bis auf die Tatsache, dass unser Ziel das Selbe ist: Amerika.Die Reise der Protagonisten Lydia und ihres 8-jährigen Sohnes Luca beginnt in Acapulco, Mexiko. Unvermittelt befinden sich Cummins' Leserinnen und Leser in einem Kugelhagel, ausgelöst durch ein mexikanisches Kartell, dass während eines Grillnachmittags innerhalb kürzester Zeit Lydias und Lucas Familie auslöscht, genauer gesagt 16 Angehörige, darunter auch Lydias Mann Sebastián und ihre Mutter, während sie es schafft, sich und Luca im Bad vor den Killern zu verstecken und somit ihr Leben zu retten. Nachdem sich die Mörder zurückgezogen haben und das ganze Ausmaß des Schreckens deutlich wird, wird Lydia aber auch schnell bewusst, dass ihr Sohn und sie fliehen müssen, da sie von der Polizei – die ohnehin korrupt ist – keine Hilfe zu erwarten haben und das Kartell so lange nach ihnen suchen wird, bis sie auch sie getötet haben. Während Lydia ihre Flucht organisiert, weiß sie nicht, wie knapp sie dem Kartell entgeht, bevor sie sich mit ihrem Sohn Luca auf den Weg nach el norte macht, wie der Norden im Roman genannt wird.Wir sind inzwischen im Bundesstaat Washington angekommen, der als Evergreen State seinem Namen alle Ehre macht und mit seinem vielen Grün, den Wäldern, den Bergen, aber auch dem Meer ideal ist, um viel Zeit in der Natur zu verbringen. Auch der kleine Ort, in dem meine Freunde leben, hat es mir angetan und könnte mit seiner Beschaulichkeit und seinen kleinen Häuschen glatt einer amerikanischen Serie entsprungen sein.Auch Lydias Leben ist einmal beschaulich gewesen. Sie führte einen kleinen Buchladen in Acapulco durch den sie auch Javier Crespo Fuentes kennenlernt, mit dem sie sich anfreundet und von dem sie zunächst nicht weiß, dass er der Chef des Los Jardineros Kartells ist. Er ist kultiviert und über seine regelmäßigen Besuche, gemeinsame literarische Vorlieben und Gespräche, entwickelt sich eine Freundschaft zwischen den beiden. Problem ist nur, dass Lydias Mann Sebastián Journalist ist, dessen Steckenpferd es ist, über Kartelle zu berichten und der eine große Story über Javier und Los Jardineros zu veröffentlichen plant. Was er schließlich auch tut und damit eine Reihe von Ereignissen in Gang setzt, die letztlich dazu führen, dass er selbst tot in seinem Garten liegt und seine Frau und sein Sohn auf der Flucht sind.Im weiteren Verlauf des Romans wird Lydias und Lucas beschwerliche Reise beschrieben, deren Ziel es ist, dem langen Arm des Kartells zu entkommen und sich gezwungenermaßen in den Strom anderer Flüchtlinge einzureihen. Dabei lernen sie die beiden Schwestern Rebeca und Soledad aus Honduras kennen, die ihnen auch dabei helfen, die Fahrten auf dem berüchtigten Todeszug La Bestia – langen Güterzügen, die das Land durchqueren – zu überstehen. Denn sie sind die einzige Möglichkeit, den langen Weg von Mexiko in die USA nicht zu Fuß bestreiten zu müssen. Doch das Aufspringen auf die Züge ist gefährlich und auf ihnen tummeln sich meist schon viele Migranten. Daher versuchen sie stets so unauffällig wie möglich zu bleiben, denn jeder Mitreisende könnte ein Gesandter des Kartells sein, der nach ihrem Leben trachtet. Und auch die spontanen Einsätze der Polizei sind ein Faktor, der die Flucht jederzeit in Gefahr bringen und scheitern lassen kann.Wir sind mittlerweile in San Diego angekommen und Dank eines Mietwagens können wir nicht nur problemlos die Stadt und das dazugehörige Umland, wie die wunderschöne Coronado-Halbinsel erkunden, sondern finden auch einen höher gelegenen und beliebten Aussichtspunkt rund um einen alten Leuchtturm, von dem aus man bei guter Sicht bis nach Mexiko blicken kann. An diesem Tag herrscht leichter Nebel, doch ich blicke in die Richtung, in der Mexiko liegt und denke unwillkürlich an das von mir gelesene American Dirt und bin mir dessen bewusst, dass ich mich gerade an einem Ort befinde, der das Ziel von vielen ist.Während des Lesens wird man immer wieder Zeuge unfassbarer Gewalt und Grausamkeiten die den Migranten, die meist ohnehin schon traumatisiert sind, angetan werden und die alles über sich ergehen lassen, wenn sie nur überleben und damit ihrem Ziel – ein besseres Leben zu führen – etwas näher kommen. Wir lesen aber auch von Momenten der Nächstenliebe durch beispielsweise Außenstehende, die den Migranten Wasser und Essen zur Verfügung stellen und der gegenseitigen Hilfe der Migranten untereinander, ohne die es vermutlich ein aussichtsloses Unterfangen wäre.Schließlich führt der unbändige Wunsch, dass alles bisher Geschehene nicht sinnlos war, das Gefühl seinem Ziel näher und näher zu kommen und die Hoffnung auf ein Leben in Sicherheit und ohne Angst, einen Teil der Menschen, deren Geschichte Jeanine Cummins erzählt, auf die letzte Etappe einer beschwerlichen Reise. Es ist der Weg durch die Wüste, den die Migranten mittels eines Cojoten zurücklegen und der sie all ihre Ersparnisse und Kraft kostet.Während wir selbst, auf unserem Weg von San Diego zum Grand Canyon, in einer 9-stündigen Autofahrt die Wüste und ständig wechselnde Landschaften durchqueren, muss ich oft an American Dirt denken. Ich hoffe die ganze Zeit, dass wir mit dem Mietwagen nicht mitten im Nirgendwo liegen bleiben – obwohl die Landschaften beeindruckend sind – und gleichfalls hoffe ich, dass die Klimaanlage nicht ausfällt, denn die Außentemperaturen liegen wahrscheinlich bei 45 Grad. Ich frage mich, wie es Menschen möglich ist, solch höllische Torturen auf sich zu nehmen. Frage mich, wie groß deren Leidensdruck oder deren Angst ist und wie es der menschliche Körper schaffen kann, solche Strapazen zu überstehen, was ebenfalls bedeuten muss, dass es Menschen möglich ist, ein unbändiges Maß an Hoffnung zu empfinden, das sie weitergehen lässt.Auch wenn Jeanine Cummins Roman eine fiktive Geschichte ist, ist es doch sehr real, dass täglich Menschen aus verschiedenen Ländern flüchten, dass sie Unglaubliches auf sich nehmen und viele von ihnen dabei sterben oder einfach spurlos verschwinden. Wie sie selbst in ihrem Nachwort erwähnt, gibt es dazu kaum belastbare Statistiken. Was Cummins' mit ihrem Roman für mich schafft ist, dass sie mich als Leserin unvermittelt in ihre Geschichte zieht, deren Tempo äußerst rasant ist und einem genauso wenig Zeit gibt zu überlegen, wie der Protagonistin selbst, die einfach nur handelt, um das Leben ihres Sohnes und ihr eigenes zu retten. Bis dato hatte Lydia kein schlechtes Leben geführt, im Gegenteil, und nun zeigt uns Cummins, auch anhand der vielen anderen Figuren in ihrem Roman, wie unterschiedlich die Beweggründe sein können, dass Menschen sich solcher Gefahren aussetzen, in der Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben. Damit nehmen wir sie nicht nur als gesichtslose Masse von Migranten wahr, sondern bekommen die Möglichkeit, unsere eigenen Ressentiments zu erkennen, zu überdenken und in ihnen die Individuen zu sehen, die sie sind. In meinem Fall ist Jeanine Cummins das sehr wohl gelungen und für mich besticht ihr Roman neben allem Schrecken auch durch sein Mitgefühl und den Wunsch, den Menschen gerecht zu werden und stellvertretend für die zu stehen, die ihre Geschichte nicht selbst erzählen können. Eine Reise geht zu Ende. Für mich war es eine wunderbare Reise, auf der ich so viel Schönes erleben und entdecken konnte, auch deshalb, weil ich den richtigen Pass und das nötige Kleingeld hatte. Auf der mir aber auch die Schattenseiten des Landes, der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten nicht entgangen sind. Für Lydia und Luca endet eine Tortur, aber zumindest lässt uns Jeanine Cummins hoffen, dass sie nun ein friedlicheres Leben führen können. This is a public episode. Es gibt so Bücher, da quält man sich. Ob man das muss, gerade als freier, unbezahlter Rezensent, aber auch als schnöder Leser von Büchern, es ist ein ewiger Streit. Ein Streit, in dem Anzahl und Vehemenz bejahender Argumente reziprok mit dem Alter des Argumentierenden korrelieren. Ok, man kann auch formulieren: Je näher man dem Grabe ist, desto weniger ist man geneigt, einen Autor langsam zur Sache kommen zu lassen. Aber das klingt grausam, oberflächlich, und Anne Findeisen setzt gerade zum “OK Boomer” an.Und es ist tatsächlich ungerecht dem Autor gegenüber, einschränkend: sobald man ihm ein Niveau zugesteht oberhalb des seit ein paar Jahren aufgrund irgendeines Marketingkurses so heftig promoteten “Deutschen Krimis mit Lokalkolorit”, ein Genre, in dem arbeitslose Redakteure von regionalen Tageblättern ihr Gehalt aufbessern, indem sie uns weiß machen wollen, dass es in Berlin-Marzahn fast genauso zur Sache ginge wie in Chicago Southside.Gehen wir also von den guten Autoren aus.Ein Autor schreibt auf leerem Blatt eine Story, und je ferner sie von der Lebenswirklichkeit des Lesers entfernt ist, desto größer des Autor-Dilemma: Erklärt er mit Begriffen, die dem Leser nahe sind, die ferne Seltsamkeit seiner Phantasie, oder lässt er es den Leser selbst herausfinden? Ersteres vergrößert die Chance auf die Bahnhofsbuchhandlung und erhöht die Anzahl der Bücher, die der Leser bis zum Grabgang, siehe oben, lesen kann, enorm, aber es ist auch potentiell langweilig, bricht die Magie, nicht zu reden von der künstlerischen Integrität des Auteur.Kann man also Regeln finden, die man anwenden kann, wenn man auf Seite 10 eines Buches noch kein Wort verstanden hat?Statt theoretisch zu salbadern, greifen wir in den Fundus der aktuellen Falschgoldschen Buchliste “in progress”. Der Punkt, dass darunter ein Buch aus Papier ist, so zum Blättern, mit Rascheln und so, macht deutlich, dass wir hier nicht von anekdotenhafter Beweisführung, sondern regelrecht von Empirie reden können, so alt ist der Rezensent, so viele Bücher las er schon. Dem Zuhörer kommen die Tränen.Das papierne Buch ist dunkelgrün, ein Paperback, und öffnet sich automatisch auf Seite 374/375 - Ein Eselsohr! Wenn man genau hinschaut, sieht man, dass der Papierschnitt, also die Außenseite des geschlossenen Buches, von dieser Stelle an bis zur Seite 1014 glatt ist, die Seiten davor uneben. Denn ich habe Ulysses von James Joyce schon so oft angefangen, und bin so oft nur bis zur Hälfte gekommen, dass ich einmal den Traum hatte, dass der Quizmaster unseres monatlichen Kneipenquiz die Frage stellt, welches Buch folgendermaßen beginnt:Erste Seite UlyssesSTATTLICH UND FEIST erschien Buck Mulligan am Treppenaustritt, ein Seifenbecken in Händen, auf dem gekreuzt ein Spiegel und ein Rasiermesser lagen. Ein gelber Schlafrock mit offenem Gürtel bauschte sich leicht hinter ihm in der milden Morgenluft. Er hielt das Becken in die Höhe und intonierte: “Introibo ad altare Dei.”Woraufhin ich meinem Kollegen beruhigend zuzwinkere “Hab ich”. Im Sinne von “die Antwort”, aber auf keinen Fall “verstanden”. Denn jetzt, auf Seite 374 sitzt Leopold Bloom immer noch am 16.6.1904 und frühstückt Leber. Sehr sympathisch, und das mit dem Frühstück ist nur ein educated guess, ein Drittel im Buch, das berühmterweise einen Tag im Leben eines Anzeigenverkäufers in Dublin beschreibt, das muss noch Frühstück sein.Ach, ich lese mal kurz rein..Dreißig Minuten später habe ich noch keine Ahnung, ob es Frühstück, Brunch oder Mittag ist, aber mehr als eine davon, warum ich das Buch immer wieder beginne: Es ist ein Rätsellabyrinth. Zusammengehalten von der Einfachheit der Prämisse: Ein Mann, ein Tag, eine Stadt, und damit unkompliziert reinzukommen, ist es fast unmöglich, wieder rauszufinden: So viele Fragen gestellt in bildlichster Sprache, man sieht sie vor sich, die verrückten Dubliner, immer etwas schmuddlig, nie unter 3,8 im Turm und dennoch gebildet, klug und rätselhaft. Wenn man weiß, dass man etwas nie ganz verstehen wird, befreit das ungemein, und wenn man weiß, dass das Literaturprofessoren so geht, nicht zu reden von Übersetzern und Rezensenten, ist das ein Argument, das Buch immer wieder zu beginnen, ohne das Ziel, es jemals zu beenden.Ein weiteres Beispiel, ein ganz anderes: Am 20.1. diesen Jahres 2020 kam der neue William Gibson raus, “Agency”, und der Vorbestellen-Knopf war schon halb gedrückt, als ich aus den Augenwinkeln das Cover sah, mh.. erinnert an etwas, und auch die “Kunden kauften sonst noch”-Zeile des bösen Onlinebuchhändlers erinnerte an Bekanntes. Genauer an Gibsons 2014er Roman “Peripherie” und daran, dass ich trotz heftigem Fanboyseins das Buch nicht nur nicht zu Ende gelesen habe, nein, dass ich kaum über Seite 30 hinweggekommen war. Was zumindest für diesen Rezensenten, der eine Buchserie von vorn bis hinten lesen muss, ohne Lücken, es unmöglich macht, den neuen Gibson zu lesen, ohne den alten Gibson gelesen zu haben. Anne Findeisen murmelt übrigens gerade wieder “Ok Boomer”, bekanntermaßen kann sie Simon Beckets David-Hunter-Serie Buch 6 lesen und Buch 5 mal eben so locker überspringen. Sie ist ein Monster.Ich bin keines, also holte ich mir “Peripherie” von William Gibson auf den E-Reader und kann berichten, ich bin sechs Jahre älter, nicht weiser. William Gibson ist ein allgemein anerkannter Visionär und Erfinder des allgegenwärtigen Begriffes “Cyberspace”, der, wie sich das gehört für unsere oberflächliche Zeit, mit dem “Cyberspace” in Gibsons Newromancer nichts, aber auch gar nichts gemein hat. Daraus scheint mir Gibson sein Lehren gezogen zu haben und erklärt nun einfach gar nichts mehr. Wir springen aus dem Wohnwagen eines Kriegsveteranen in ein Computerspiel, Fragezeichen, gespielt mit einem faltbaren, Fragezeichen, Handy als Controller und dargestellt auf mehreren, Fragezeichen, Displays, physischen, Fragezeichen. Eine Welt aus Fragezeichen, aber noch hat Gibson drei Bücher minus 30 Seiten, von denen eines noch nicht mal geschrieben ist, Zeit, uns zu erklären, wie wir bald leben werden, und schon jetzt spüre ich, dass er ziemlich weit daneben liegen wird, denn schon lange ist es nicht mehr möglich, ein Buch in der nahen Zukunft anzusiedeln, ohne von dieser bei Veröffentlichung überholt zu werden. Aber William Gibson muss gelesen werden, er ist Kanon, und kein Weg führt an der Tatsache vorbei, dass es aktuell keinen genaueren Beobachter unserer gegenwärtigen Zukunft gibt. Ich ignoriere also zunächst die Fragezeichen und werde mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit in Kürze hier an dieser Stelle berichten können, ob Gibson recht hat, ob Periphery und Agency uns helfen, uns zu verstehen.Sich zu verstehen, ist das Hauptproblem des titelgebenden Haupthelden in einem Buch, welches kaum diametraler sein könnte als die bisher angesprochenen “schwer lesbaren” Werke. “The Death and Life of Schneider Wrack” ist kein Bestseller, es spielt weder an einem Tag noch in naher Zukunft. Es ist ein Roman in einer fremden und seltsamen Welt. Geschrieben wurde er von Nate Crowley, einem Briten, den mein Lieblings-Online-Computerspielmagazin mit Namen “Rock, Paper, Shotgun” letztes Jahr eingestellt hat. Ja, Herr Falschgold liest nicht nur seit 25 Jahren Ulysses, sondern auch Computerspielmagazine. Clearly the most interesting man in the world. Gleich nach Nate Crowley muss er jedoch neidlos anerkennen. Nicht nur hat er, wie Herr Falschgold, eine Vorliebe für eine Nische im Computerspielkosmos, in der sich Games an ein Publikum wenden, das nicht reaktionsschnell das fünfhundertachtzigste x-beliebige Monster zu Brei ballern will, sondern stattdessen, das Kinn in die Hand gestützt, stundenlang virtuellen Figuren zuschaut, wie sie nur geringst von ihrem ihnen zuschauenden Gott beeinflusst ihrem Leben nachgehen. Für fantasielose Träumer von Eigentumswohnung und Minivan sind das die Sims, in dem sich realistische 3d-Instagrammodels in realistischen Mietwohnungen realistisch langweilen, für milde fantasiebegabte das aktuelle Lieblingsgame des Rezensenten namens “Rimworld”, in dem drei zufällige und meist ziemlich gestörte Raumfahrer auf einem Planeten stranden und versuchen, ohne dem Kannibalismus zu verfallen, von diesem wieder wegzukommen, dargestellt in der Draufsicht von liebevoll gezeichneten kleinen Pixelmenschen in einer Welt voller Gefahren. Nate Crowley jedoch machte auf sich aufmerksam durch das, was er aus dem Spielen des Programmes “Dwarf Fortress”, also “Zwergenburg”, machte. Ein Spiel, in dem die Personen nicht in 3d gezeigt werden oder pixelsüß animiert sind, sondern einfach nur verschiedenfarbige Buchstaben auf einem schwarzen Bildschirm, die sich blinkend von A nach B bewegen und deren Tun und Sein in Statistiken und gelegentlichen Beschreibungen aufgezeigt wird. Klingt trocken, aber mit dem fantasievollen Kopf eines Nate Crowley wurde daraus eine 23-Folgen-Fortsetzungsstory über “The Basement of Curiosity”, in dem Nate seine alphanumerischen Zwerge die wildesten, lustigsten Abenteuer bestehen lässt und darüber in solch schillernden Farben berichtete, als ginge es um den neuesten photorealistischen Blockbuster unter den Spielen und nicht um eine Textwüste in Grün auf Schwarz. Dazu hat Nate Crowley einen Twitteraccount, auf dem er Fotos seines Terrarium/Aquarium zeigt, welches statt mit den üblichen Fischen und Fröschen komplett mit Krabben, Langusten und ähnlich vielbeinigem Krustengetier bewohnt wird.Wenn man solcherlei seltsames Hobby mit derlei ausschweifender Phantasie kombiniert, muss ein Roman rauskommen. 2017 war es soweit, und es ist ein Trip. Unser Hauptheld Schneider Wrack war gerade noch Bibliothekar in einer postapokalyptischen Hafenstadt und erwacht auf einmal auf.. einem Schiff? Er weiß es nicht. Er weiß so gut wie gar nichts mehr. Er weiß noch nicht mal, ob er lebt. Er bewegt sich, er sieht und fühlt, aber.. er atmet schon mal nicht. Zumindest muss er es nicht. Um ihn herum sind ein paar hundert Menschen, die einen riesigen Wal mit Äxten und Messern traktieren und das rausgehackte Fleisch in Wagons verladen. Das Ganze passiert auf hoher See, so viel scheint klar, aber das Schiff ist so groß, dass er nicht sieht, wo es beginnt und endet. Auch sagt keiner ein Wort, zunächst noch nicht mal er selbst. Es scheint sich niemand um ihn zu kümmern, also beginnt er, auf dem Schiff zu wandern, und sieht die seltsamsten Dinge. Aufseher mit zugewachsenen Mündern, als Wachtiere begleiten sie Haie auf metallenen Beinen. Die Arbeiter haben alle Verletzungen, die auf einen gewaltsamen Tod hindeuten - und doch bewegen sie sich wie.. Zombies! In einer abgelegenen Halle finden sich in eine Ecke gestapelt so kaputte Exemplare, dass sie nicht mehr zur Arbeit zu gebrauchen sind, aber, Horror, sie bewegen sich noch. Auf Händen, so noch welche dran sind, oder sie schauen verwirrt von links nach rechts, wenn der Kopf noch dran ist, der Rest aber schon ab. Es ist eine Freakshow und nichts für schwache Gemüter. Es ist einem permanent ein bisschen schlecht. Es wimmelt von Worten, die ich nicht kenne und Wikipedia auch nicht, Fischarten vermutet man, halb-lateinisch klingend, aber auch Namen von Orten und Städten, bei denen man ob der Tatsache, dass sie so klingen, als müsste man sie kennen, Google Maps aber nichts findet, noch verwirrter ist als unser Hauptheld Schneider Wrack.Endgültig fertig macht Schneider, einige Seiten im Buch, dass er mit niemandem kommunizieren kann, sich niemand um ihn kümmert. Bis er eine Frau mit einem Loch in der Brust trifft, typische Säbelwunde, die leise vor sich hin jammert. Er tauft sie Moana und spricht leise auf sie ein. Bis sie ihm antwortet..Nate Crowley hat einen der abgefahrensten Romane in einer der abgefahrensten Settings ever geschrieben - und ich habe jetzt schon fünf Bücher von Jasper Fforde gelesen, wir erinnern uns, die Detektivin Thursday Next, die in Büchern lebt. Wir müssen unser Vorstellungsvermögen anpassen, alles ist größer als man denkt, und dann noch ein Stück. Wale so groß wie Fußballfelder werden von Kraken gefressen, so groß wie kleine Ostseeinseln. Wir bereisen den Amazonas und bemerken als Leser spätestens dann, warum Nate Crowley dazu neigt, deutsche Worte einzubauen, man sieht die Inspiration zum Buch in dem fiktiven Werk, welches Schneider Wrack, unser Protagonist, auf einmal im Körper einer Krabbe, fragt nicht, liest, es ist der Bericht einer Amazonasexpedition wie geschrieben von Alexander von Humboldt. Wir können das Buch, obwohl lange nicht explizit geschrieben, nur als Parabel auf eine Ökokatastrophe lesen und werden dazu mit moralischen Dilemmata konfrontiert - wann ist man tot und wann ist man so richtig tot? Und was passiert, wenn dann künstliche Intelligenz ins Spiel kommt. All das ist kaum zu greifen durch bestsellergewohntes eiliges Lesen. Man muss sich Zeit nehmen, man muss das Buch weglegen, schon weil einem manchmal ein bisschen übel ist. Aber man wird es immer wieder aufnehmen, man will mehr wissen von dieser fremden und seltsamen Welt des Schneider Wrack und Nate Crowley.Und das ist am Ende das Kriterium für jedes “schwere Buch”. Will man mehr wissen? Und da ist es egal, ob man mehr wissen will, weil man kaum etwas versteht, wie bei Joyces Ulysses, ob man mehr wissen will, weil man weiß, dass der Autor viel zu sagen hat, wie bei jedem Roman von Will Gibson, oder weil man einfach wissen will, ob sich Moana und Schneider, zu Beginn des Romans Zombies und zur Hälfte der eine eine Krabbe und die Andere ein Kampfroboter, am Ende doch bekommen und warum die Welt des Nate Crowley so abgefuckt ist, wie sie ist.Ja, Bücher sind manchmal schwer, inhaltlich, sprachlich, emotional, aber wir haben ein Leben Zeit, oder um es mit James Joyce zu sagen: “„Der längste Umweg ist der kürzeste nach Hause.“ - und hätte ich den Ulysses zu Ende gelesen, hätte ich vielleicht ein wirklich passendes Zitat gefunden. The guys are at Studio B and Poni was late after being warned of that by Donny and Chris earlier today. So, we made fun of him for the first segment until he showed up around 2:12 pm. Does this game mean more to the Steelers? We know how much the trip means to the Rooney family and how much it would have meant to the late Dan Rooney. It seems like some players, Cam Heyward included, sounds like this game has some more juice. The guys think it also means a ton to Mike Tomlin, given how much it means for the family that hired him. Poni said he can't picture the Steelers coming out flat in this game. PG columnist Jason Mackey joined the show. Jason has been in Ireland all week, so he gave a lay of the land of what is going on. He told the guys about some of the local vernacular he's picking up. Jason thinks this game does mean a little bit more to the Steelers. Jason thinks the Rooney family would like for this to not be the last time the Steelers play in Dublin. Jason said it could be close to a 50/50 crowd even though the Steelers are the home team.

With the guys stuck in traffic heading to Studio B, Donny had to start the show. He reacted to the words from Mike Tomlin on his philosophy of playing guys, or not doing so, in the preseason. Donny made the argument that Tomlin should play most of the starters, if healthy. Several big-name QBs play around the league and multiple teams in better spots than the Steelers play their starters at least a little bit.
