Some never made it to market and some had a good run but were eventually beat out by something better. These technologies competed during the transition from bulky CRTs to flat panels, but most lost out as LCD, later becoming LED-backlit LCD, then OLED, became dominant for reasons like cost, scalability, picture quality improvements, and manufacturing ease. Technologies That Were Proposed/Demonstrated but Never Commercially Released to Consumers SED (Surface-Conduction Electron-Emitter Display)Developed primarily by a Canon and Toshiba joint venture starting in the late 1990s/early 2000s. It was essentially a flat-panel evolution of CRT technology using electron emitters for each pixel, promising CRT-like motion handling, deep blacks, high contrast, fast response times, and low power in a slim form factor. Prototypes were shown around 2005–2007 with impressive demos. Why it didn't make it: Repeated delays due to manufacturing challenges (high production costs, difficulty scaling/vacuum sealing), patent disputes, and aggressive price drops in LCD/plasma panels. Then by 2009–2010, LCD had become too dominant and cheap; Canon officially froze consumer SED development in 2010, shifting any remaining efforts to niche professional uses. FED (Field-Emission Display)Similar to SED and sometimes grouped together or seen as a precursor/variant. FED used field-emission electron sources (like microtips) for CRT-style performance in a flat panel. Demonstrated in prototypes in the 2000s by companies like Sony and Motorola. Why it didn't make it: Development took too long; manufacturing complexity and yield issues made it unviable. It was overtaken by faster-scaling plasma and then LCD/OLED technologies before reaching mass production. Technologies That Reached the Market but Were Discontinued DLP (Digital Light Processing) Rear-Projection TVsUsed Texas Instruments' DMD (digital micromirror device) chips to reflect light, often with a color wheel for sequential color (or pricier 3-chip versions). Popular in the mid-2000s for large-screen (50–70+ inch) HDTVs from brands like Samsung, Mitsubishi, RCA, and Toshiba, offering good brightness, no burn-in, and sharp images at competitive prices. Why discontinued: Bulky depth (even if thinner than CRT rear-projection), lamp replacements needed, rainbow artifacts (on single-chip models), poor off-angle viewing, and vulnerability to ambient light. As flat-panel LCD and plasma prices fell dramatically in the late 2000s, consumers preferred slim, wall-mountable designs. Rear-projection DLP TVs largely vanished by around 2010. LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) / Variants like D-ILA (JVC) and SXRD (Sony)A reflective microdisplay tech using liquid crystals on a silicon backplane, often in rear-projection or some front-projection setups. Offered excellent contrast, deep blacks, and smooth motion (better than early LCDs). Available in HDTVs from JVC, Sony, and others in the mid-2000s. Why largely discontinued for direct-view TVs: High cost, manufacturing complexity, and lower brightness compared to emerging flat panels. Rear-projection versions suffered the same bulkiness issues as DLP. While LCOS survives today in high-end projectors mostly in JVC and Sony home theater models, it never scaled to mainstream direct-view flat-panel HDTVs and was eclipsed by LCD advancements. Plasma Display Panel (PDP / Plasma TVs)Used ionized gas (plasma) cells to create light, excelling in black levels, contrast, color accuracy, wide viewing angles, and no motion blur. Very popular for HDTV in the 2000s from Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung, and LG. Why discontinued: High power consumption, heat generation, heavier panels, burn-in risk (though mitigated later), and difficulty scaling to 4K efficiently/cost-effectively. As LCD/LED prices dropped with better brightness, efficiency, and no burn-in, plasma couldn't compete economically. Production fully ended around 2014–2015. Other Notable Mentions LCD Rear-Projection TVs — Used transmissive LCD panels; suffered from similar bulk and light issues as DLP; discontinued early-mid 2000s. Direct-view CRT HDTVs — The original standard; fully discontinued by the late 2000s/early 2010s due to size, weight, and inefficiency. Key Reasons Technologies Fail in HDTV Market Regardless of how good a display technology is, the following will keep it from the mass market: Cost & Manufacturing Yield: Technologies requiring ultra-precise processes (SED, FED, LCoS) couldn't hit competitive prices.  Competing Technologies Improve Fast: LCD and later LED/OLED got cheaper and better quicker than rivals could scale. Form Factor Shift: Direct-view panels beat rear-projection (DLP, LCoS, laser) because consumers prefer thin TVs. Performance Tradeoffs: Issues like power use, burn-in, brightness, viewing angles, or reliability hurt consumer uptake.  In summary, the winners were technologies that scaled cheaply to larger sizes, became thinner/lighter, improved efficiency, and avoided major drawbacks like high costs or reliability issues. LCD/LED dominated the 2010s due to mass production advantages, while OLED took premium segments later for superior contrast/per-pixel lighting. Many promising "next-gen" ideas from the 2000s (like SED/FED) simply arrived too late or proved too hard to manufacture affordably.

What really happens when AI helps teams write code faster, but everything else in the delivery process starts to slow down? In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I'm joined once again by returning guest and friend of the show, Martin Reynolds, Field CTO at Harness. It has been two years since we last spoke, and a lot has changed since then. Martin has relocated from London to North Carolina, gaining back hours of his working week. Still, the bigger shift has been in how AI is reshaping software delivery inside modern enterprises. Our conversation centers on what Martin calls the AI velocity paradox. Development teams are producing more code at speed, often thanks to AI coding agents, yet testing, security, governance, and release processes are struggling to keep up. The result is a growing gap between how fast software is written and how safely it can be delivered.  Martin shares research showing how this imbalance is already leading to production incidents, hidden vulnerabilities, and mounting technical debt. We also dig into why this AI-driven transition feels different from previous waves, such as cloud, mobile, or DevOps. Many of the same concerns around security, trust, and control still exist, but this time, everything is happening far faster. Martin explains why AI works best as a human amplifier, strengthening good engineering practices while exposing weak ones sooner than ever before. A significant theme in the episode is visibility. From shadow AI usage to expanding attack surfaces, Martin outlines why security teams are finding it harder to see where AI is being used and how data is flowing through systems. Rather than slowing teams down, he argues that the answer lies in embedding governance directly into delivery pipelines, making security automatic rather than an afterthought. We also explore the rise of agentic AI in testing, quality assurance, and security, where specialized agents act like virtual teammates. When well-designed, these agents help developers stay focused while improving reliability and resilience throughout the lifecycle. An Iñupiaq village on Alaska's North Slope is suing after the Trump administration removed protections for an area important to subsistence hunting. The suit by Nuiqsut Trilateral Inc. says the action is in response to a move to expand oil drilling beyond what is in a Biden-era agreement for the Willow project. Another fight pitting caribou and oil drilling is resurfacing over increased momentum to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, where Gwich’in people express concern over the declines of the Porcupine caribou herd — the state's largest — which is down to a quarter of what it was two decades ago. We'll look at the factors that affect Alaska's caribou and what Alaska Native people who depend on them are doing about them. Coach Plough shared a simple framework he's used to make career decisions — one that applies just as cleanly to players in the transfer portal as it does to coaches staring at the next offer.He evaluates opportunities through two essential questions:* Who will I be around every day?* Will this make me better—on and off the field? Essentially, will I grow holistically?If he can't check both boxes, he stays.That's it.No elaborate speech. No posturing. Just a disciplined refusal to trade daily environment and development for a temporary dopamine hit — whether that dopamine comes from money, visibility, or the illusion that “this leads to that.”It's a filter built for a chaotic era. And it might be the most practical tool I've heard from anyone navigating modern football. And it hit me square in the face as I almost changed my life path last year due to a temporary dopamine hit.Joy isn't soft. It's the edge.If you've watched UC Davis this season, you've probably seen it: the “JOY” hat, the postgame interviews with his kids, the steady presence even when the stakes are real. That isn't branding. It's philosophy.Plough's relationship with joy started years ago — through the influence of Jim Sochor, the architect of what so many still call the “Davis coaching tree.” Sochor didn't offer him a playbook first. He offered a question: Have you found joy?Over time, that question turned into a guiding principle:* Happiness is outcome-driven (and fragile).* Joy is process-driven (and stable).Tim Plough's point is simple: if your emotional state is tied to outcomes, you'll live on a roller coaster — high after a win, hollow after a loss, never anchored long enough to actually develop.But if you can build a “neutral mindset,” where gratitude and daily craft define the work, you gain something most teams spend all year chasing: consistency under pressure.Joy, in this framing, isn't softness. It's durability.Quarterbacks, development, and the modern trapTim Plough is a quarterback coach at heart, even with the head coach title. And I had to present to him my philosophy on the QB position right now: * QB development in high school is as advanced as it's ever been.* QB development in college—especially at the highest levels—is often the thinnest it's ever been.He agreed and took it a step further. After all, he said the development of the quarterback postion is “Quest of my life right now.” His reasoning is not because coaches don't care. It's because the incentives have changed, at every level in college.When teams can buy experience through the portal, many stop investing time in the slow, messy, essential process of developing someone. Instead, they recruit ready-made résumés: starts, reps, game film.The problem? Most of the quarterbacks who ultimately thrive — at any level — aren't always the ones who arrive as finished products. They're the ones who get shaped somewhere, then explode when opportunity finally arrives.In other words: development still matters. But fewer people are willing to pay for it with patience.Plough's counter is clear: if a player chooses a place where he can actually be developed, he can still end up on the biggest stages later — only now he'll be ready for them.He pointed to the rare modern decision that reflects this mindset: a young quarterback willing to be a backup, to learn, to be built, instead of chasing instant stardom.That choice feels almost rebellious in 2026. Which probably tells you why it's so valuable.Why players stay at UC DavisThis stat blew my mind. Since 2018, only 11 players transferred out of UC Davis compared to broader Division I trends where the number is over 200 per school. Think about that for a moment — only 11!In an age where movement is the default, Davis has become a place where continuity still exists.Plough's explanation isn't complicated:* Players feel coached.* Players feel developed.* Players feel valued.* The environment makes sense.* And the program's identity is strong enough to hold people in place.It's also worth noting: UC Davis operates without the financial weapons many programs now rely on. Which, paradoxically, helps clarify motives. If a player chooses Davis, it isn't because the check is the loudest voice in the room.It's because the work is. And now, it's because they see the transparency with Tim Plough.Family as culture, not accessoryOne of the most telling parts of the conversation had nothing to do with third-down calls. We touched up on the latest news around the coaching profession with new Bills head coach Joe Brady sharing that he missed the birth of a child due to a game and reportedly the GM of the Vikings is being criticized for taking two weeks of paternity leave. Two things that made most of the sports world cringe.Plough talked about building a staff culture where being a dad and a husband isn't something you squeeze in after the job — it's part of the job. A program where kids are around, where life isn't kept outside the facility doors, where coaches are expected to show up for their families with the same intensity they show up for game planning.He's not naïve about the grind. He's just clear about the cost.And he's making a decision — publicly, structurally — that time is more valuable than a bigger number on paper.That's rare. And if you've spent any time around football, you know how rare it is.Getting over the humpFor Oregon, Penn State, USC, Washington, Iowa, Nebraska fans — this one will resonate. Coach Plough opened up about the hardest part of building: getting over the hump and how to maximize a teams ability. That space between “we're close” and “we did it” is where programs either fracture or evolve. And for him, the answer isn't a magical speech. In episode 327 of the Glass and Out Podcast we welcome back Head Coach of the Wheeling Nailers, Ryan Papaioannou. Under his leadership the Bandits captured seven AJHL Championships, one BCHL Championship (the Bandits joined the BCHL in advance of last season), and four National Championships at the Jr A level in Canada. At the beginning of this season Papaioannou was hired by the Pittsburgh Penguins organization to coach their ECHL affiliate in Wheeling. This was my college thesis, and my passion project I have been working on for several years. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? It took me around 10-11 months of work. How would you describe your film in two words!? Questionable Protagonists What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? My biggest challenge was making time on top of other classes. As a transfer student my senior year I was doing 3-4 animation classes on top of my Thesis. So time management was super hard when you have to do over hundreds of frames for different projects. There are 5 stages of the filmmaking process: Development. Pre-Production. Production. Post-Production. Distribution. What is your favorite stage of the filmmaking process? That's difficult to say, as I love the whole process. But if I had to, I really enjoyed the pre-production, and the production. Once I get my idea I love to tweak and edit it. Polishing and getting all the assets and characters done. I want to say once I got the ok by my professor, I just ran off leash.
