What makes a friendship meaningful? Is it how long it lasts? How often we talk? Or could the gift of friendship be something else entirely—the experience of knowing another person and allowing ourselves to be known? This Sound Bite was inspired by my recent conversation with my longtime friend Roz Sobel.Roz and I met almost 50 years ago through work. Later, when I moved across the country to New York knowing only one person, that person was Roz.And then life did what life does. Our paths changed. Careers changed. Families grew. There were times when our lives were closely connected and times when they weren't.And almost 50 years later, there we were—together again for a conversation on Girl, Take the Lead!It got me thinking about the gift of friendship. There's a certain knowing that comes from sharing a particular time in someone's life.A childhood friend knew something about the child we once were. A work friend may understand a chapter of our career few others could. Friends we meet while raising children, experiencing loss or navigating a transition can become witnesses to versions of ourselves that no one we meet today can ever fully know. There is love and care in that. But I wonder if many of us also carry a belief that a really good friendship is supposed to last forever. What if it doesn't?Maybe some friendships aren't meant to accompany us through every chapter. Maybe their gift was the chapter we shared. The love was still real. The care was still real. What we gave one another still mattered. And sometimes we receive another wonderful gift:Our paths cross again. This reflection also connects to something somatic nurse coach Lisa Ketcham-Hendrickson shared with us recently: “This is always home.”If we can learn to come home to ourselves, perhaps we don't need another person to stay forever in order to prove that our relationship mattered.Maybe friendship isn't something we're supposed to collect.Maybe it's something we're fortunate enough to experience—for a season, for decades, for a lifetime, or sometimes, more than once.A Question to ConsiderWho has known a part of you that no one else could quite know—and what gift from that friendship are you still carrying? The Conversation That Inspired This Sound BiteEp. 317 — There's So Much Life to Enjoy: Travel, Curiosity & Adventure with Roz SobelWatch: https://youtu.be/phAJXqPPjpcMore on FriendshipIf you'd like to explore friendship further, check out:Ep. 207 — Building Meaningful Friendships: Overcoming Loneliness and Finding JoyEp. 134 — Friendship Realities: Fizzles, Changes, and Coping StrategiesEp. 131 — True to You: Embracing Authenticity in Friendships with NoorJehanComing NextBroadway actress, bestselling author and success coach Leslie Becker joins us to explore bravery, limiting beliefs, transitions and creativity—including a question I've continued thinking about:What if bravery isn't a personality trait—but a choice?Connect with Girl, Take the Lead!

Most people ask how to start a systems integrator. Rich Kuechenmeister has effectively built one five times, and the lesson is that the parent business decides what you become.Rich is owner and partner at Fishbone Technical Services. Before that he built automation groups inside a semiconductor equipment OEM, an automation components manufacturer, a products distributor, and a custom machine builder where he stood up a UL 508A panel shop from nothing. Each of those businesses sold something different, and that changed the engineering. At a machine builder the machine is the dog and the controls are the tail. At a distributor you build toolkits so somebody else can build the solution, handcuffed to the lines you carry. Rich argues that constraint is what made him good, because a single vendor solution is easy while four component areas from four vendors is where real integration lives. His definition of a control systems integrator stays traditional. SCADA and below, field instrumentation through PLC and HMI, bridging a little into MES. Fishbone works line control, process control on boilers, pumps and valves, and material handling where suppliers ship a motor and a few sensors and nothing more. The business advice is specific. He would rather have one $100,000 project than ten $10,000 projects, because that is one project management cycle instead of ten. He cautions against mixing maintenance work and capital projects without a plan, since context switching between a vision system callout and a pump control program burns budget on both. Dave adds the pattern he keeps seeing: come in at the bottom and you get saved in the phone as the maintenance guy, never the capital project guy. Rich hires on desire, attitude and aptitude, and admits he was once the bottleneck himself.Looking ahead, he expects acquisitions to keep rolling up integrators and leaving a void underneath, since a twenty person firm will not get out of bed for the projects a five person firm lived on. On AI he is practical. He turned three day estimates into eight estimates in a single day, but insists code writing is a subset of the job. He is also still doing a PLC-5 conversion and a DeviceNet upgrade.About Rich KuechenmeisterRich Kuechenmeister is owner and partner at Fishbone Technical Services, a nationwide remote technical services company he co-founded in 2021 with business partner Robert Summers. Fishbone is based in Texas and covers plant engineering and control systems integration from field instrumentation through PLC, HMI and SCADA, with some MES. The Uniqueness Principle: Rethinking Inheritance with Ron Blue

    MoneyWise on Oneplace.com

Puritan poet Anne Bradstreet once wrote, “Wisdom without an inheritance is better than an inheritance without wisdom.” Every parent hopes the resources they leave behind will bless their children. But a financial inheritance can have very different effects depending on the person receiving it. That is why wise wealth transfer requires more than simply deciding how much to leave—it requires careful thought, prayer, and an understanding of each child's unique circumstances. Ron Blue, co-founder of Kingdom Advisors and longtime teacher on biblical stewardship, calls this the uniqueness principle. Equal Love Doesn't Always Require Equal Treatment Studies show that many parents divide their estates equally among their children. There is certainly nothing wrong with that approach, but Ron encourages parents not to make equality the automatic default. As he explains, God loves each of His children equally, but He often treats them uniquely. The same can be true within a family. Children may grow up in the same home and sit around the same dinner table, yet adulthood can take them in very different directions. They may marry differently, parent differently, pursue different careers, experience job losses, accumulate different levels of wealth, or develop very different approaches to money. Those differences can matter when determining how an inheritance should be passed down. The question is not simply, “How can I divide everything evenly?” A better question may be, “How can I steward these resources in a way that truly benefits each child?” Three Questions to Ask Before Leaving an Inheritance When Ron and his wife, Judy, began thinking seriously about their own estate plan, they used three questions to evaluate what an inheritance might mean for each of their five children. 1. What is the worst thing that could happen? Imagine giving a particular amount of money to a particular child. How could that money negatively affect his or her life? For one child, the concern may be minimal. The money might simply be given away. For another, however, a large inheritance could create tension within a marriage, reinforce unhealthy financial habits, reduce motivation to work, or create other unintended consequences. 2. How serious would that outcome be? Not every negative possibility carries the same weight. Some may be inconvenient but manageable. Others could damage relationships, character, or financial stability. Parents should carefully consider the seriousness of each potential consequence. 3. How likely is it to happen? Finally, consider probability. A possible problem is different from a probable one. Together, these questions provide a framework for thinking beyond percentages and dollar amounts to the actual impact an inheritance could have. Your Estate Plan Should Change as Life Changes Another important part of the uniqueness principle is recognizing that circumstances rarely remain the same. When Ron and Judy first began asking these questions decades ago, their children were at very different stages of life than they are today. Careers changed. Marriages developed. Families grew. Financial circumstances shifted. As a result, Ron says the answers they would give today are very different from the answers they would have given 25 years ago. That is an important reminder: An estate plan should not necessarily be a one-time decision. As circumstances change, parents may need to revisit both their assumptions and their plans. Don't Pass Wealth Without Passing Wisdom Underlying Ron's approach is one of his most important principles: Don't pass wealth unless you pass wisdom. Wealth does not automatically produce wisdom. In fact, money can magnify whatever attitudes and habits already exist. Wisdom, however, can help someone steward wealth faithfully—and even create additional resources through diligence, generosity, patience, and wise decision-making. That means preparing the next generation involves far more than preparing legal documents. Parents can begin transferring wisdom long before they transfer wealth by talking openly about stewardship, generosity, work, contentment, financial decision-making, and God's ownership of everything. The greatest inheritance may not be the money children eventually receive, but the biblical principles they learned while their parents were still living. Faithfulness Matters More Than Fairness The uniqueness principle does not mean every estate should be divided differently. After thoughtful consideration, parents may still conclude that an equal distribution is the wisest choice. The point is not that equal is wrong or unequal is better. The point is to avoid allowing cultural expectations, guilt, fear of conflict, or simple habit to make the decision for you. Instead, approach wealth transfer prayerfully and deliberately. Ask what each child's circumstances are. Consider what opportunities or challenges an inheritance might create. Think carefully about the consequences. Revisit those decisions as life changes. Ultimately, wealth transfer is an act of stewardship. The resources we leave behind still belong to God, and our responsibility is to manage them according to His wisdom rather than merely following human expectations. Before asking, “How can I make everything equal?” consider asking a deeper question: “What would faithfulness look like for each person God has entrusted to my care?” On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions: I'm 60, own two rental properties outright, rent an apartment in Chicago for $2,100 a month, and have about $1.4 million in savings and investments. My rental income is seasonal, but I haven't had to draw from my portfolio yet. Is continuing to rent in Chicago financially reasonable, and is $1.4 million likely enough to support me long term? My wife and I are buying a new home and have about 60% of the purchase price in cash. We need the remaining 40% for only 60 to 90 days until our current paid-off home sells. Would a HELOC, bridge loan, or another short-term financing option make the most sense? Our 22-year-old daughter lives at home and has very few expenses or responsibilities. Would it be biblical and wise to start charging her rent, and how should we determine a fair amount? Welcome back to The Collision Vision, driven by Autobody News. I'm your host, Cole Strandberg. On a recent episode of the podcast, I sat down with Juan Carlos Gasga Perez, owner of Premier Auto Body and the technician and educator behind Auto Body Strong. We talked about his journey, the evolution of the modern collision technician, and the role that better training, better tools, and better processes play in performing increasingly complex repairs the right way. But there was another part of that conversation that really stood out: the way Juan is helping make the craft of collision repair visible. The response to our content with Juan was incredible, and it raises a bigger question for an industry that spends a lot of time talking about the technician shortage: Are we doing enough to make collision repair a career people actually aspire to? Joining me today to dig into that are Erin Solis and Sheryl Driggers. We'll talk about what stood out from the Juan conversation, how technicians are learning today, and what shops can do to create better pathways for their people to grow. We'll also get into recruiting, retention, mentorship, social media, and how we can do a better job celebrating the skill and craftsmanship that already exists throughout this industry. Because maybe solving the technician shortage isn't only about finding more people. Maybe it starts with building careers people don't want to leave — and showing the next generation why they should want to be here in the first place. Let's get into it. Dalia helps employers convert more career-site traffic into qualified applicants by giving job seekers a universal candidate profile that eliminates repetitive applications and streamlines the application process. Learn more (link below) https://www.dalia.co/audit?utm_source=pos About: I'm joined by two leaders who have built careers around one simple idea: great businesses are built by great people. First is Josh Robinson, a transformational executive with more than 20 years of experience leading finance, technology, and business strategy across organizations ranging from $50 million to $7 billion in revenue. Josh is known for building high-performing teams, creating cultures that attract top talent, and helping companies think big, start small, and scale fast. Joining him is Mike Nathan, a Navy veteran, entrepreneur, investor, and startup builder who's helped launch, advise, and invest in more than a dozen companies across industries. From Search & Rescue Swimmer to founder, board member, and operator, Mike believes that business is one of the most powerful vehicles for creating meaningful impact for people and communities. Together, Josh and Mike bring an incredible combination of operational excellence, entrepreneurial grit, and people-first leadership. I'm excited to dive into their journeys, what they've learned building companies and cultures, and where they see the future of work and leadership heading next. Key Takeaways: Not every high performer should become a manager. Companies need meaningful advancement paths for strong individual contributors instead of forcing them into leadership roles they may not want or be equipped for. Leadership is less about having every answer and more about building the right team. Great leaders trust subject-matter experts, ask better questions, and create the conditions for others to execute. Authenticity builds more trust than pretending to know everything. Employees respond better to leaders who admit what they do not know and work alongside the team to find the answer. Conviction can matter as much as competency. Skills may get someone through the interview process, but genuine belief in the company's mission determines whether they will remain committed when things get difficult. A founder's ability to delegate is a critical indicator of scalability. Founders who constantly say “I,” control every decision, and cannot step away will eventually become the bottleneck in their own business. Raising capital should serve a specific goal, not someone's ego. Companies should pursue funding when it accelerates product development, sales, expansion, or a planned exit, not because announcing a major round has become a status symbol. AI is creating the rise of the “Army of One.” Individuals and small teams can now use AI, outsourcing, and personal branding to produce the output and profitability once associated with much larger organizations. Take the “Army of One” seriously, but not literally. AI can dramatically increase individual productivity, but growing companies will still need talented people when complexity, scale, and human connection demand them. Replacing employees with AI is often the wrong strategy. The greater opportunity is to give employees AI tools, remove repetitive work, and redeploy people into more valuable roles that improve service and generate revenue. The professionals who thrive will combine expertise with AI fluency. Human judgment, technical knowledge, and relationship skills will remain valuable, but people who fail to learn how to apply AI within their field risk being left behind.     Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Leadership and Impact 01:43 Personal Leadership Journeys 05:19 The Role of Individual Contributors vs. Leaders 08:12 Evolving Beliefs About Leadership 09:48 Hiring Talent vs. Building Executable Teams 12:44 Evaluating Founders and Their Potential 14:43 Post-Mortem Analysis of Failed Startups 15:52 The Right Time to Raise Capital 17:52 The Army of One Myth and AI's Role 26:51 AI's Impact on Jobs and Company Culture 32:28 The Importance of Human Expertise in a Tech-Driven World 33:16 Hiring for Heart: The Key to Successful Interviews 35:21 Assessing Compatibility: The Role of Personality in Hiring 37:49 Radical Transparency in Leadership and Its Challenges 41:33 Risky Decisions: Career Moments That Changed Everything 45:06 Debunking Business Clichés: What Needs to Die 47:40 AI: Signal or Hype? Are relationships and real athletic experience more valuable than credentials? Should social workers pursue a PhD or DSW? Why are many PhD programs funded while DSW programs often are not? Where does AI help research, and where does it fall short? The conversation goes deeper into NIL, athlete protection, dual relationships, financial literacy, youth burnout, international athletes, recruiting in Africa, and the danger of making athletic identity a young person's entire identity. Dr. Moore explains why collegiate and community sports are seeing some of the strongest growth opportunities for social workers and why social work, psychology, psychiatry, coaching, and athletic training should work together instead of competing. We also discuss the University of Kentucky's sport social work education pathways, career networking, his sport social work textbook, and a new comprehensive sport social work handbook being developed with more than 100 international experts.GUESTDr. Matthew MooreUniversity of Kentucky College of Social WorkEmail: mattmoore@uky.eduAlliance of Social Workers in SportsSport Social Work JournalLearn the mindset and moves that lead to real results. About one in ten jobs across the globe are in the travel industry, but from the hundreds of conversations I've had over the years, I've learnt that the paths to working in tourism and travel are many and varied! In this episode I chat with four people who've found their way into this industry through very different ways. First up, Russell True describes how he ended up having a lifetime career in the dude ranch accommodation and experience industry; then I speak with Mathi Thayanan who now runs his own travel company in Sri Lanka but didn't always plan to do this. Jana Marie Bald then explains her career path from agricultural science to tourism (not what I'd expected!) and finally, Aabiskar Thapa describes how from growing up near Pokhara, Nepal and seeing tourists on the trail, he took a circuitous route to ending up working in travel himself. How do you know when a chapter of your life is over and how do you leave it well?In this Pause with PK solo episode, I shares a chance conversation at a Miami Dolphins game that brought me back to a “Keeper” my mom saved more than 30 years ago: a passage about the art of the graceful exit.Life happens in seasons. Careers change. Friendships evolve. Relationships end. We move, divorce, change direction and outgrow versions of ourselves. And while I admit, I'm not always quick to close a chapter, I believe deeply in the importance of exiting one with grace… especially when it comes to careers and divorce (when possible!).This short reflection is an invitation to consider the chapters and seasons in your own life: what deserves to be held onto, what may be ready to end, and how we can honor what mattered without needing to stay there.Take a few minutes to Pause with PK… and wherever life takes you next, hold tight to the good.Sign up for my monthly newsletter at www.PaigeKornblue.com

It recently ranked in the global top 20, and was launched on Netflix last year. But what makes Jemma even more interesting is the story of how she got there: she started the podcast as a side project whilst working an 80-plus hour week in a corporate job. She built it episode by episode, using her background in psychology to break down the things that make ambitious people feel stuck, anxious, and like they're falling behind.I really hope you love our chat! Welcome to The Daily. Go ahead and pick up your 1 Peter Scripture Journal now. Our text today is 1 Peter 2:4-8: As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame." So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone," and "A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense." They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. — 1 Peter 2:4-8 Imagine spending the rest of your life answering questions about something Jesus said to you decades earlier. Jesus renamed Simon and called him Peter—"rock" (John 1:42). Then He made the remarkable statement, "On this rock I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18). Ever since, people have debated exactly what Jesus meant. What strikes me is how Peter responds. Years later, when Peter writes about stones and foundations, he never draws attention to himself. Instead, he points people away from the man called "Rock" and toward the true Stone. Toward Jesus. Peter writes, "As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious." Christianity is not merely about embracing a set of beliefs or adopting religious practices. It is about coming to a Person. And that Person is Jesus Christ. Peter describes him as a Living Stone. That image would have caught the attention of both Jewish and Gentile readers. Stones were associated with permanence, strength, and stability. Yet Peter says this Stone is alive. Jesus was rejected, crucified, and buried, but death could not hold him. The cornerstone of God's kingdom still lives. Peter then reminds his readers that they, too, are "living stones" being built into a spiritual house. God is not simply saving isolated individuals. He is building a people. Each believer finds his place and purpose in relationship to Christ and to one another. But the cornerstone image is where Peter's point becomes unmistakable. A cornerstone was not decorative. It established the alignment of the entire structure. Every other stone was set in reference to it. If the cornerstone was off, the whole building would eventually be compromised. The same is true in our lives. Everyone is building something. Careers are built. Families are built. Reputations are built. Dreams are built. The question is not whether you are building. The question is what your life is built upon. Peter draws on two Old Testament texts, Isaiah and the Psalms, to show that this same Stone, chosen and precious to God, was rejected by many. To those who believe, Jesus is the cornerstone. To those who reject him, He becomes "a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense." The Stone does not change. The response to the Stone does. We live in a culture obsessed with self-construction. Build your platform. Curate your identity. Create your truth. Reinvent yourself. Peter offers a different vision in this text. You don't create your own foundation. You choose what foundation you trust. And eventually, every life reveals what it was built upon. Jesus will either become the foundation beneath your life or the obstacle in your path. You don't have to build a perfect life. But you do need the right foundation. Because storms have a way of exposing what we've been building on all along. So build on the cornerstone, don't stumble over it. DO THIS: Take inventory of the areas of your life that matter most—your relationships, work, finances, priorities, and ambitions. Ask yourself honestly whether they are aligned with Christ or merely built around your own desires. ASK THIS: What foundation am I trusting most right now? In what area of my life is Jesus shaping my decisions and priorities? Where might I be resisting Christ instead of aligning myself with Him? PRAY THIS: Father, thank You for giving me a foundation that cannot be shaken. Forgive me for the ways I build around my own plans and desires rather than aligning my life with Christ. Help me trust Jesus more deeply and shape every part of my life around Him. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Cornerstone."

Send us Fan MailIn our latest episode, Yvonne and Rafael talk to Denise Evans, Director of Claims at Staffmark Group.Guest Bio:Denise Evans | Director of Claims, Staffmark Group37 years in the workers' compensation industryNational temp staffing program leadership—managing claims across multiple industries and statesStrategic program architect and industry connector; active in the National Council of Self-InsuredsOur ConversationIn this episode, we tackle unbundling—a strategic choice most self-insured companies face, but few really understand. It affects your costs, outcomes, control, and flexibility. The Choice: Bundled vs. UnbundledBundled: You contract with a carrier or TPA. They handle provider networks, vendor relationships, and medical management. You get discounts from their preferred partners and operational convenience in exchange for limited control. It's predictable. It's hands-off.Unbundled: You build and manage your own program, or parts of your program. You choose providers, set vendor relationships, own day-to-day decisions. You lose some negotiated discounts but gain control and flexibility. For most companies, bundling is the default. The real question is whether it actually works for your business. You Don't Have to Unbundle Everything at Once: Here's what most people miss: unbundling doesn't have to be all or nothing. You can be selective and phased. Build the option into your contract, then unbundle component by component as your capacity grows. Denise unbundles specific areas where control matters most to Staffmark—nurse case management, pharmaceutical, DME, bill review, transportation, translation. The point is to move at your own pace rather than changing the entire program all at once. That's what distinguishes companies that successfully unbundle from those that get overwhelmed and abandon it.Why This MattersThe case for unbundling: When you need control over outcomes that matter to your business—return-to-work rates, duration management, cost containment. You have a specific workforce (or multiple workforces) requiring tailored medical management. You have the internal capacity to manage vendors.Denise's example: Staffmark handles employee leasing and staffing. Workers move between client sites, industries, and states. A one-size-fits-all bundled network doesn't work. They unbundled to have more agility—the ability to build relationships with providers who understand Staffmark's unique recovery demands. The case for bundling: You want predictability. You lack bandwidth for vendor management. You'll accept good-enough outcomes for operational simplicity. The hard truth: Unbundling isn't cost-cutting. It's an investment. You're paying for vendor management infrastructure, relationship-building, and reporting sophistication to defend your program to carriers. Without that capacity, you'll end up worse off than you started. The Core QuestionIs your current program structure actually supporting your business outcomes? If your business depends on a specific workforce profile, recovery timeline, or outcome metric—and your bundled program doesn't optimize for that—you're paying for convenience while leaving money on the table. If you unbundle without infrastructure to manage it, you're paying more for worse results.Let the decision be driven by what you're optimizing for. Not cost. Not convenience. What outcome matters most? Then ask: which structure gets you there?Your Carrier Relationship ChangesUnbundling shifts accountability. When you bundle, the carrier owns program quality and accountability. When you unbundle, you do.Carriers will want data, evidence of sound decisions, transparency into what's working. If your unbundled program underperforms, that becomes a negotiation point at renewal—and it can be expensive. This is why infrastructure matters. You need reporting, metrics, proof points to show carriers your program is solid. If you can defend your approach with data, you have leverage. If you can't, you're vulnerable.Workforce Complexity Drives the DecisionStaffmark operates across temp staffing—workers move between client sites, industries, and geographies. Claims span manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics in the same population.A bundled one-size-fits-all network becomes a liability. You need providers who understand different recovery demands across industries and can move fast. Unbundling becomes a business necessity, not a luxury.Single-industry, stable-geography workforce? Bundling's convenience might be your sweet spot. Complex, multi-industry workforce? You may not have a choice. The Fragmentation FactorManaging a national program across 50+ state regulations, different medical networks, and different carrier relationships is expensive and fragmented. The companies doing this well aren't isolated. They're connected to others solving the same problems. They attend conferences not for networking, but because that's how they hear about approaches that actually work, meet vendors who get it, and stay current on what's changing. That's operational necessity, not optional.Key TakeawaysLet strategy drive structure. What outcome matters most to your business? Answer that first. Too many companies let vendor relationships or carrier preferences dictate strategy.Unbundling requires investment. You need vendor management capacity, reporting sophistication, and the ability to defend your program to carriers. Without it, you'll end up worse off.You own the quality when you unbundle. Expect more carrier scrutiny, more data requirements, more accountability at renewal. But you also get leverage if your program performs.Your business model determines complexity. Multi-industry, multi-state workforce? Your program needs flexibility. Single industry, single state? Bundling might be your answer.Making This DecisionDon't let bundling be your default just because it's convenient. Talk with your team, your carrier, and peers who've navigated this. The real question: does your current structure support your business outcomes? That's worth figuring out. Denise mentioned her work with the National Council of Self-Insurers. Next year, the conference will be at the historic Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. It's a great conference to attend if you want to connect with people actually doing this kind of work.¡Muchas Gracias! Thank you for listening. In Episode 425 of Aviation News Talk, Max talks with retired Air Force General David Brubaker about STEM Flights, a nonprofit organization that pairs middle- and high-school students with volunteer pilot mentors for free, one-on-one aviation experiences designed to introduce them to careers in aviation, aerospace, engineering, and other STEM fields. STEM Flights grew out of Brubaker's own experience after retiring from the Air Force in 2005. During his military career, he flew aircraft including the F-4 and F-16 and finished his career with an assignment at the Pentagon. After retiring, he became active in general aviation and began taking young people flying. But Brubaker didn't simply give them airplane rides. He expected them to participate. They helped with navigation, looked at the instrumentation, worked with the radios, and often took the controls themselves. Years later, he began hearing back from some of those young people. Several had gone on to study aviation, aerospace, engineering, and other technical subjects. One young woman eventually earned her ratings, joined the West Virginia Air National Guard, and became a C-130 pilot. Those experiences helped Brubaker recognize that pilots could have an enormous influence on the career choices of young people simply by sharing aviation with them in a meaningful way. His children encouraged him to turn what he was doing informally into a nonprofit, and STEM Flights was launched in 2018. Today, STEM Flights connects students with volunteer pilot mentors around the country. Students don't simply show up at an airport for a free ride. They apply to the program, receive a recommendation, select a mission based on their interests, and complete homework before being paired with a pilot. That preparation is part of what makes STEM Flights different. Brubaker describes the program as a more intensive, personal experience than a typical introductory airplane ride. A student is paired one-on-one with a pilot mentor, and the pilot learns about the student's interests before the flight. On the day of the mission, they discuss safety and learning objectives, preflight the airplane, and then head into the air. Once they reach a safe altitude, the student usually gets the controls. They may learn about navigation, aircraft instrumentation and communications, and Brubaker says he likes to have each student make at least one radio call. But the most powerful moment often comes when the student realizes that he or she is actually flying the airplane. Brubaker tells the story of one reluctant young man whose mother encouraged him to participate. On the ground, the student appeared completely uninterested, and Brubaker wondered whether the flight would accomplish anything. Then they took off. Within minutes of taking the controls, the boy came alive. He started participating, asking questions, and enthusiastically flying the airplane. A couple of weeks later, Brubaker received a letter from the boy's mother. She explained that her son had approached life believing it was better not to try than to try and fail. Flying an airplane—something he never imagined he could possibly do—changed his perception of what he might be capable of accomplishing. That experience illustrates why STEM Flights is about more than simply recruiting future pilots. Students have gone on to pursue aircraft maintenance, avionics, aerospace engineering, military aviation, and other technical fields. Brubaker says dozens have attended universities with aviation or engineering programs, and STEM Flights continues supporting students after their flights through a program called Flight Following. Flight Following connects participants with information about scholarships, flight schools, grants, Civil Air Patrol, and other organizations and programs that can help them continue toward aviation and STEM careers. For pilots listening to Aviation News Talk, one of the most important parts of the conversation is how they can participate. STEM Flights calls its volunteers "pilot mentors," and you don't need to be a flight instructor. Brubaker says pilots generally need a private pilot certificate, at least 250 hours of flight time, appropriate medical and aircraft qualifications, and a background check. You don't necessarily need to own an airplane either. Some pilot mentors rent aircraft or belong to flying clubs, and in some areas STEM Flights has arrangements with local flight schools. The organization has pilot mentors in 49 states, but matching students with available pilots remains a constant challenge. At the time of the interview, Brubaker said roughly 115 young people were waiting to be paired with pilots. After a career that included fighter jets, simulated air combat and pulling nine Gs, Brubaker says mentoring young people offers a different kind of satisfaction. Military flying was intensely focused on accomplishing a mission. STEM Flights provides an opportunity to give something back. And for a general aviation pilot wondering how to help strengthen the future of aviation, the concept is remarkably simple. Share your airplane. Share your experience. Put a young person at the controls. And you may help launch an aviation career that otherwise never would have begun. Jeffrey Cole is one of the world's leading voices on media, technology, and the digital future. He founded the World Internet Project, the longest-running global study of online behavior, and has spent more than three decades studying how major technological shifts reshape society and business. He also directs the Center for the Digital Future at the USC Annenberg School and has taught more than 35,000 students. In this episode, Jeffrey shares his perspective on why AI could be the most disruptive technology in history, where new opportunities are emerging, and how entrepreneurs and workers can thrive in a rapidly changing economy. On this episode we talk about: Why the internet, COVID, and AI represent an unprecedented period of disruption—and how AI could be the most disruptive technology yet The difference between innovation and true disruption, and how disruption can completely reshape or eliminate entire industries How AI may transform the job market and why careers centered around human connection, creativity, caregiving, and hands-on skills could become increasingly valuable Why the trades and apprenticeship models may be better positioned for the future than traditional four-year college pathways How technology has leveled the playing field for entrepreneurs, making it possible to build businesses and creative projects with dramatically lower costs and overhead Top 3 Takeaways Look for opportunity in disruption. When industries are being transformed, entire new niches and business models emerge. Instead of resisting change, entrepreneurs can look for the opportunities created by it. Develop skills that are difficult to automate. Human connection, caregiving, creativity, and hands-on skills may become increasingly valuable as AI and automation replace more routine jobs. Keep overhead low and surround yourself with smart people. Technology has dramatically reduced the cost of starting businesses and creating products, giving individuals and small teams opportunities that once required massive amounts of capital. Notable Quotes "All of this chaos creates incredible opportunities to find new niches, to really build new businesses." "AI has the potential to be the most disruptive technology of all time." "The best single thing you can do is be around smart people with low overhead."
