Aging is more than disease—it's the steady decline of function. In this episode of Longevity by Design, Dr. Gil Blander speaks with physicist-turned-biotech innovator Dr. Peter Fedichev about why resilience, not diseases, holds the key to longer lives.Peter explains how his background in theoretical physics shaped his approach to biology and aging. He outlines why startups, not large institutions, are now leading innovation in longevity science. Drawing from physics, he describes aging as a series of “jumps” between states, each leaving the body more fragile. The discussion moves from the limits of current drugs to the promise of new approaches. Peter argues that reducing fluctuations and increasing molecular fidelity could unlock far greater gains in healthspan and lifespan. Listeners gain a fresh lens on what drives aging, where the real breakthroughs may come from, and why the next frontier in longevity will require rethinking the problem altogether. Guest-at-a-Glance

If you didn't have a visceral reaction to the title for this episode, then you are almost certainly not in our target audience. There are few more certain ways to get a room full of analytics folk fired up than to raise the topic of dashboards. Are they where data goes to die, or are they the essential key to unlocking self-service access to actionable insights? Are they both? Is the question irrelevant, because, if they exist to inform business users, aren't they soon going to be replaced by an AI-powered chatbot, anyway? We thought a great way to dig into the topic (and, BTW, we were right) would be to have someone on the show who has co-penned multiple books on the topic. As luck would have it, Andy Cotgreave, one of the co-authors of both 2017's The Big Book of Dashboards: Visualizing Your Data Using Real-World Business Scenarios and the imminently releasing Dashboards That Deliver: How to Design, Develop, and Deploy Dashboards That Work agreed to join us for a lively chat on the topic! Too many leaders wake up one day successful on paper but disconnected from their purpose. In this episode of Recruiting Conversations, I walk you through how to reverse engineer your business and personal life to create outcomes that actually matter to you. This isn't about hustle. It's about building with clarity, protecting what matters, and creating rhythms that align with your vision. If you've ever felt like you're moving fast but not sure where it's taking you, this episode is your reset. Episode Breakdown [00:00] Introduction – Why reverse engineering is the antidote to building someone else's version of success [01:00] Principle 1: You Can't Reverse Engineer What You Haven't Defined Get specific about what you want your business, calendar, and life to look like Don't chase vague words like success or balance. Define the outcomes [02:30] Break It Down by Category What kind of team do you want to lead? What kind of schedule supports your best energy? What kind of health, relationships, and joy do you want to experience? [03:30] Apply Strategic Questions to Each Outcome What recruiting cadence supports this? What boundaries do I need to set? What systems support this pace or lifestyle? [04:30] Face the Gap Reverse engineering forces you to see where current behaviors don't match your goals Most leaders avoid this because it's uncomfortable, but alignment always requires honesty [05:30] The 4 Alignment Framework Personal Rhythm – Your energy, calendar, and non-negotiables Team Structure – Who you are building with and whether they align with your values Market Strategy – Growth plans that match your bandwidth and mission Life Design – What you want your actual life to feel like, not just what you want to achieve [07:30] Practical Exercise Three columns: Top five outcomes you want over the next year Actions and habits required to get there What already exists in your calendar and what needs to change [08:30] Break the Lie You do have time It is not too late You do not have to settle for a life that just looks successful [09:00] Final Challenge Block one hour this week Write your five desired outcomes Reverse engineer one calendar change, one rhythm, and one habit Key Takeaways Clarity Comes First – If you don't define the outcome, you will drift instead of design Small Changes Create Big Alignment – You don't need to overhaul your life, just start with one new rhythm Systems Protect Vision – A calendar built around your priorities helps you lead with presence Growth Isn't the Goal. Alignment Is – You can build big and still be unfulfilled if it's not the life you wanted You Are the Architect – Stop reacting to demand. Start building what matters most Success without alignment is just speed toward the wrong destination. You don't need a better opportunity. You need a better blueprint. In this episode, I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Carrie Locklyn—a woman whose journey is as inspiring as it is entertaining. From her early days as a backup dancer for Mariah Carey (yes, you heard that right!) to touring the world with iconic stars, Carrie's story is one of fearless reinvention. I was blown away as she shared how she moved from the dance floor to embracing the art of organization, transitioning into an HGTV star and mastering the craft of interior design. We dove into the real, unglamorous side of life on TV—talking about everything from lugging boxes in messy hotel rooms to finding beauty in the chaos of decluttering. Carrie's down-to-earth approach, her knack for mixing humor with practical advice, and the way she champions taking risks, even if it means failing spectacularly, truly resonated with me. I was especially struck by how she balances the art and science of organizing—turning everyday clutter into a canvas for a soulful, personal space. Tune in for a spirited conversation packed with laughter, tough truths, and a whole host of behind-the-scenes stories that remind us that sometimes, saying “yes” to life's challenges is the boldest design choice of all. Today Eric explores the concept of life expectancy, applying it to both personal well-being and business longevity. He shares anecdotes about active older adults, prompting reflection on quality of life and the importance of proactive health choices. A significant portion focuses on the survival rate of construction businesses, highlighting the high failure rate and urging contractors to invest in training, accountability, and strategic business design for profit and freedom. The discussion emphasizes that expectations in life and business evolve, and continuous effort, learning, and adaptability are crucial for thriving rather than merely surviving. Key Takeaways: Prioritize your health by training harder, eating better, and making conscious lifestyle choices daily. Invest in continuous personal and professional development through training, mentorship, and engagement with peer groups. Cultivate an accountability network by sharing your goals and discussing progress with supportive individuals. Design your business and personal life for freedom and profit, ensuring your efforts lead to desired long-term outcomes. Make deliberate, positive choices every day, as these consistent small decisions determine your future quality of life.

It blends a challenge-style format with an open house approach to authentically reflect Louise's sense of calm and her audience's needs. Here's the thing: there's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all launch. If you want it to really stick and last you've got to pick a launch style that feels like you, speaks to what your people actually want, and suits what you're offering. Key Takeaways Don't Force It - Launch with Intention Your launch should feel authentic, not contrived. Launch formats like webinars or bootcamps only succeed when they naturally fit your style and audience dynamics. Four Core Launch Strategies Webinars — Educational, interactive, and great for feeding high-intent prospects Bootcamps — Intensive, immersive, and perfect for engagement and transformation Open House — Low-pressure peek behind the curtain; ideal for showcasing offerings Paid Workshops — Commitment-filtered sessions that lead to higher conversion rates The Case of Louise Miller's Make It Happen Club Louise's business thrives on calm, thoughtful planning. A typical webinar or bootcamp wouldn't reflect that. Instead, we partnered to create a hybrid launch called Quiet Action, Big Impact—a soft, intentional experience infused with mindful structure. Customize to Connect Matching your launch approach with your personal rhythm and your audience's needs doesn't just boost conversions—it sets the stage for an experience that feels meaningful and memorable. Craft with Clarity A strategic launch starts with clarity: Understand your strengths and style Know your audience's preferences Design with intention, not pressure Launch should reflect your values, not someone else's playbook LINKS TO RESOURCES MENTIONED IN TODAY'S EPISODE Ep 339 - Re-defining Productivity and Reducing Overwhelm: Strategies for Success with Louise Miller Connect with Louise Miller on Website Connect with Teresa on Website,

Design Empathy and Contextual Awareness: Frames of Reference for the 21st Century Creative by Wayne K. Li https://www.amazon.com/Design-Empathy-Contextual-Awareness-Reference/dp/1529438217 https://id.gatech.edu/people/wayne-li One of the biggest challenges facing designers across all fields is not simply in the design of the product or service itself, but rather how to arrive at a design solution that resonates with a target audience, that will have a higher than likely chance at market adoption, and that will avoid negatively impacting society or the environment. What are the skills that can be employed by a student or young professional creative early on that enable them to identify the issues at work and address them? By understanding design from human-centered perspectives - both from the customer's and the producer's point of view - innovative, resonant designs are possible. Design Empathy and Contextual Awareness demystifies the "fuzzy" front end of the design process, where research methods mix with business trends and marketing. The accessible, authoritative text presents design as neither merely a "trade" skill nor an exercise in personal creative vision, but rather the application of multiple mindsets and practices, built around a process of alternating points of view (or "frames"). As well as covering theory and process, this visually engaging book also provides real-life business examples and applicable templates to help designers hone their empathy and contextual awareness in order to more directly and efficiently achieve successful design outcomes. Chapters cover: Laying a foundation: design as a whole-brain activity Design behaviors: design as a whole-life activity Empathy: cognitive and emotional empathy, and compassionate concern Contextual awareness: cultivating your designer's sixth senseAbout the author Wayne K. Li is the James L. Oliver Professor, holding a joint position between the Colleges of Design and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. He leads joint teaching initiatives and advances interdisciplinary collaboration between mechanical engineering and industrial design through classes and the Innovation and Design Collaborative, also known as the "Design Bloc," while also serving as a principal design consultant at Wayne Li Design. Li's research areas include ethnographic research, multidisciplinary education, and human-machine interaction in transportation design. His career spans industry and academia. Li has led innovation and market expansion for Pottery Barn seasonal home products, taught in Stanford University's design program, led interface development at Volkswagen of America's Electronics Research Laboratory, and developed corporate brand and vehicle differentiation strategies at Ford Motor Company. He has also worked as a product designer at IDEO Product Development. Li holds a Master of Science in Engineering from Stanford University, and undergraduate degrees in Fine Arts (Design) and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Hey listeners... So, last weekend we had the privilege and the honor of recording from this year's Dark Arts Festival. This time the festival took place at RISD (the venerated Rhode Island School of Design). Brought to you by our good friend (and Friend of the Show), Josh Dahlin of The Horror Depot...the festival brought together, vendors, artists, authors, side-show performers, drag queens, oddities, and much much more in an all-inclusive and diverse space to celebrate the weird and wonderful world of horror, creativity and community. We were fortunate enough to get to talk to film-makers, paranormal investigators, artists and performers. It was a rainy and miserable late-summer New England day but, all that rain certainly didn't dampen anyone's spirits as we, and everyone else had a helluva lot of fun and you can check it all out by listening in ths very episode!

In part two of Worth Your Time, hosts Dr. Rob Shumaker and Kristi Lee continue their conversation with restaurateur and author Lisa Dahl. She explains how color, romance, and female sensuality shape her restaurant spaces and dishes; why she teaches cooks to taste, not just time recipes; and how a veggie burger she created as a teen evolved into today's “hipster” burger. Dahl discusses her cookbooks The Elixir of Life and A Romance with Food, healing through holidays after loss, and the launch of her foundation and “Soup Hope—The Universal Soup of Love.” She also shares updates on her documentary Blessed by Grace, shown at the Heartland Indie Short Films Festival in Indianapolis. Welcome back, amazing teachers!
Copernic Catalysts is developing next-generation chemical catalysts using computational materials design to replace century-old technology in the $80 billion ammonia industry. The company has raised $10 million and is working with top-five global ammonia producers to prove their Neptune catalyst can deliver tens of millions in annual savings per plant while reducing the industry's 1% contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. In this episode, Jacob Grose shares insights from his journey from BASF venture capitalist to deep-tech founder, revealing how his team is navigating one of the most conservative B2B markets while building transformational technology for both current chemical production and future sustainable shipping fuels. Topics Discussed: The century-old ammonia catalyst problem and why the industry hasn't innovated Copernic's computational approach to rationally designing drop-in replacement catalysts The extreme conservatism of chemical industry customers and how to overcome it Multi-stage go-to-market strategy from lab samples to pilot demonstrations to commercial scale Using toll manufacturing partnerships to scale capital-efficiently while building customer trust The historical significance of ammonia synthesis and its role in feeding 8 billion people Building a platform technology for multiple catalyst products across different chemical markets GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Navigate ultra-conservative B2B markets with staged proof: Jacob outlined a methodical approach for entering markets where customers are "terrified of change" due to tight margins and operational risks. Start with small lab samples to top customers, progress to pilot-scale demonstrations over 6-12 months, then secure commercial installations. This staged approach allows conservative buyers to gradually build confidence while de-risking their decision-making process. Leverage toll manufacturing for customer credibility and capital efficiency: Rather than building manufacturing capabilities, Copernic partners with established catalyst manufacturers using an "Apple model" - they own the IP while trusted partners handle production. This approach provides three key advantages: faster scale-up, capital efficiency, and most importantly, customer comfort with proven quality control systems. For deep-tech founders, partnering with established players can accelerate market acceptance. Turn industry conservatism into a competitive moat: While chemical industry conservatism creates barriers to entry, Jacob recognized it also creates powerful moats once you're established. Companies using 100-year-old iron-based catalysts represent massive switching costs and customer lock-in opportunities. Founders entering conservative industries should view initial resistance as future protection against competitors. Design for drop-in replacement adoption: Copernic deliberately engineered their catalyst to work within existing plant infrastructure, minimizing customer adoption friction. Jacob emphasized using "base metals" (common, inexpensive materials) and standard manufacturing techniques to ensure compatibility. When disrupting established industries, reducing implementation complexity can be more valuable than maximizing performance gains. Build technical credibility through domain expertise transfer: Jacob's nine years at BASF provided deep industry knowledge that proved essential for both product development and customer trust. His background in corporate venture capital gave him insights into how large chemical companies evaluate new technologies. Founders targeting specialized B2B markets should consider how domain expertise - whether through hiring, partnerships, or personal experience - can accelerate credibility and customer relationships. Position platform technology for multiple market opportunities: While focused on ammonia catalysts initially, Jacob positioned Copernic as a platform company with computational catalyst design capabilities applicable across multiple chemical markets. This platform approach appeals to investors seeking larger addressable markets while providing strategic flexibility as the company scales. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty digs into what really happens after you step away from the career you spent decades building. Guest Jack Calhoun, Founder & President of Encore Career Lab, explains why financial freedom alone doesn't equal fulfillment, how identity loss creeps in post-exit, and how to build an intentional second act that blends purpose, autonomy, and meaningful impact. We cover the pitfalls of the “endless vacation” myth, the value of structure and accountability, and practical steps to map your encore path—so you don't drift, but design. Optimized for YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn search: encore career, post-retirement purpose, second act career, identity after work, purposeful retirement, midlife reinvention, career transition coaching. About the guest Jack Calhoun grew a wealth-management firm from $50M to $1.5B AUM, exited in his early 50s, and learned firsthand that money planning isn't life planning. Through Encore Career Lab, he helps high-achieving professionals craft mission-driven “encore” careers that use their unique abilities, wisdom, and autonomy. Key takeaways Retirement as “endless vacation” wears thin; purpose, structure, and community sustain wellbeing. Identity loss post-career is common; plan for purpose as intentionally as you plan finances. Design your encore around autonomy: what you do, for whom, where, and how. Mine your lived experience (“what I know now that I wish I knew then”) into advisory, coaching, or consulting offers. Don't jump into low-fit ventures; pressure-test ideas with a clear framework before committing capital. Purposeful work in midlife can be both fulfilling and lucrative—scale is a choice. Future-proof now: build skills, relationships, and small pilots before your exit.
