But what if creating a space you love could actually support your well-being, reduce stress, and help you feel more grounded in your motherhood? In this episode, I'm joined by Valerie Bradshaw, a longtime Self-Assured Motherhood Sister and home design enthusiast, who shares how to approach decorating with color, confidence, and alignment with your personal values. Ever wondered why changing habits feels like an uphill battle?Behavioral scientist Matt Wallert pulls back the curtain on how human behavior can be systematically designed and changed – not through wishful thinking, but through a scientific process. What if culture change, product design, or even personal transformation wasn't guesswork but a process as reliable as engineering? In this episode of Change Wired, I sit down with behavioral scientist, author, and “empathetic scientific activist” Matt Wallaert to talk about the science - and the humanity - behind designing change that actually happens. We get into everything from M&Ms to meeting culture, VR boxing to corporate ethics, and why fuzzy words in leadership are killing your results. Matt breaks down how all behavior results from competing forces – promoting pressures that make behaviors more likely and inhibiting pressures that make them less likely. Through practical examples ranging from M&Ms to VR boxing to parenting, Matt demonstrates how small environmental changes can create massive behavioral shifts.Perhaps most fascinating is Matt's insight into organizational change. While companies obsess over changing customer behavior, they often neglect internal behavior design. "Fuzzy leadership language" about wanting "more engaged employees" or "better culture" fails because it doesn't translate to specific, observable behaviors. Matt provides a framework for creating workplaces where people thrive by applying the same rigor to internal behaviors that companies apply to customer acquisition. The conversation takes a thought-provoking turn when Matt and the host discuss the ethics of behavior change. When is it appropriate to change someone's behavior? How do we ensure we're helping people align their actions with their intentions rather than exploiting cognitive weaknesses? Whether you're looking to transform personal habits, lead organizational change, or design products that genuinely improve lives, this episode offers effective frameworks for making behavior change systematic, ethical, and effective. We dive into:Why defining specific behaviors is the missing first step in almost every change effortThe difference between naïve behavior change and evidence-based designHow to think about promoting vs. inhibiting pressures (and why it matters more than motivation)Real-life examples from parenting, product design, and internal culture changeEthics in behavioral science: intention–action gaps, autonomy, and long-term thinkingHow leaders can stop hiding behind values statements and start engineering cultures that workIt's practical.

Wer hier mithalten will, muss anders denken.

Drywall is one of the most commonly used materials in construction — and one of the most wasteful. It's estimated that more than 10 percent of drywall from new buildings end up in landfills. The material can release harmful gasses, such as hydrogen sulfide, and act as a potential contaminant for groundwater. But two architecture professors at Washington State University’s School of Design and Construction have developed a way to turn this waste into something useful.   Taiji Miyasaka and David Drake have spent years developing and patenting a process to transform drywall scraps into usable building blocks — a substitute for bricks — and fire-resistant wall panels that are both known as Drywall Waste Technology. Made with up to 90 percent drywall waste, WSU estimates that excess material from just 16 new homes could produce enough DWT material to build one tiny home. Miyasaka and Drake’s products have earned international acclaim, winning the AZ Award for Environmental Leadership in Azure magazine’s global design competition.   David Drake joins us to explain how this technology could be a resource in addressing both housing shortages and construction waste.

    Business Coaching Secrets

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2025 51:03

In this episode of Business Coaching Secrets, Karl Bryan and co-host Rode Dog tackle some of the most pressing questions facing business coaches: how to harness AI (like ChatGPT and Grok) to grow your coaching practice, which industries are likely to be safe from AI disruption, and where exactly to find—and close—high-end coaching clients in today's dynamic business landscape. Karl also unpacks the art of closing with confidence, breaks down a powerful Zen-inspired mindset shift, and explains why product quality is the domino that knocks down all other business challenges. Key Topics Covered AI Prompt Engineering for Business Coaches Karl shares how specificity and defining context are vital when prompting AI tools like ChatGPT and Grok. He walks through advanced examples of framing prompts to get world-class business advice personalized to your ideal client and circumstance. Industries Resilient to AI Disruption The conversation covers which industries are least likely to be “decimated” by AI over the next decade. Empathy-driven sectors—like coaching, healthcare, and education—are less vulnerable to automation, along with trades (construction, home services), fine arts, government, and cybersecurity. Where to Find High-End Coaching Clients Karl details actionable strategies to uncover business owners ready to invest in coaching, such as: Targeting businesses actively spending on advertising, new award nominees/winners, and recent chamber of commerce members. Building relationships with the people who sell advertising, chamber memberships, and run award programs—offering referral incentives to tap into fresh, motivated prospects. Approaching businesses for sale, as they often desperately need systematization and profit optimization to become sellable. The Art of Closing Clients (with Scaled Pricing) Karl shares his proven “scaled pricing” hack: rather than cutting your fee, start clients at a low monthly rate and gradually increase once trust and value are established, making it easy for new clients to say yes—while still closing at top-dollar over time. Product vs. Sales vs. Marketing: The Navil Ravikant Framework A key insight: most problems in sales and marketing are really product problems. If your product is “world-class,” word of mouth will eventually outshine all marketing efforts. Karl urges coaches to aim for such client outcomes that competitors end up sending you leads. Zen Wisdom for Coaches: The Myth of a Happy Life Karl closes the episode with a reflection: a happy “life” doesn't exist—only happy moments, created one present instant at a time. Drawing parallels to AA's “one day at a time,” he challenges listeners to focus on moment-to-moment progress for lasting fulfillment. Notable Quotes “Prompt engineering is everything. Get insanely specific—and define your ideal client and circumstances in your AI prompt for killer results.” “Empathy and connection are your moat. AI accelerates, but it cannot replicate genuine human mentorship.” “Don't chase only new revenue—chase profit. Profit is the domino that knocks over all the other dominoes.” “If you can't close at your fee, don't discount—use scaled pricing... get the yes with a low commitment and ramp up.” “People sacrifice what they want most for what they want now. That's a bad trade.” Actionable Takeaways 1. Become a Prompt Engineering Pro: Level up your AI game by defining who is answering your question, who your client is, and exactly what you want—test and refine prompts for actionable advice tailored to your needs. 2. Focus Where Clients Spend to Grow: Target business owners already investing in advertising, awards, or memberships—they've shown intent to grow and are prime for business coaching. 3. Build Referral Pipelines With Influencers: Cultivate relationships with those selling ads, chamber memberships, and awards—often overlooked, they'll gladly refer for a meaningful incentive. 4. Use Scaled Pricing to Close With Confidence: Instead of slashing your coaching fee, start with a low rate for the first month and ramp up; this reduces buyer risk and makes it easy for prospects to commit to a high-value engagement. 5. Double Down on Empathy, Not Just Tactics: Lean into the human side: your ability to connect, understand, and support clients will future-proof your practice in the AI era. 6. Build a Product Worthy of Referrals: If you had to grow exclusively through referrals, how would you reshape your service and delivery? Design a “product” so good, it sells itself. 7. Don't Aim for a Happy Life—Aim for Happy Moments: Prioritize meaningful daily wins and present-moment focus over the impossible chase for constant happiness. Jim McKelvey: Disruptive By Design

    Insider Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2025 23:07

What do glassblowing, fintech, and plastic-free diapers have in common? One brilliant disruptor: Jim McKelvey. I had the privilege of interviewing Jim McKelvey, the award-winning, Amazon-beating polymath who co-founded Square (now Block) with Jack Dorsey. But calling him just a fintech entrepreneur or a computer scientist would be like calling Leonardo da Vinci just a painter. This man defies categorization in the most fascinating way possible. "I'm a guy that's had no focus for 30 years," Jim told me with characteristic humility. "I am a transport category pilot. I'm a professional glass artist with industrial designs in MoMA and the Smithsonian. I'm a computer scientist. I was on the Federal Reserve and used to vote on interest rates. That was fun. I built the hardware for Square, which we now call Block. I've started a bunch of other companies...Ugh. Look, basically, what I do is I build tools." His "lack of focus" has actually been his superpower, creating a truly unique lens on innovation, branding, and problem-solving that most specialists simply can't achieve. From Frustration to Billion-Dollar Solutions Our conversation revealed how Jim transforms everyday frustrations into industry-changing innovations. The Square story began with something as mundane as being unable to accept American Express at his glass studio. That simple pain point sparked a billion-dollar disruption that fundamentally changed mobile payments forever.  Jim shared his methodology for spotting opportunities hiding in plain sight and building products that resonate deeply with audiences. More importantly, he explained how he predicts business disasters before they happen – and his track record is impressive! Hint: his accurate predictions about Southwest Airlines and other major corporate meltdowns, made it into his book "The Innovation Stack" years before its current challenges. Then he shares how and why brand associations can make or break a company (hello, Bud Light disaster. Listen for how that motivated his current project, PwrScore.ai.) The Art of Taking Calculated Risks What struck me most about Jim was his fearless approach to high-risk, high-impact projects. "I work on projects that are right now, sort of long shots because I'm in a position where I can take a long shot," he explained. "I've made way, way more money than I ever expected. My wife and I have taken the giving pledge, so we're gonna give all the money away, but in the meantime, I can take crazy risks." That's not just talk – Jim and his wife have literally committed to giving away their entire fortune for the betterment of the world. It's a level of commitment to pro-social behavior that's both inspiring and rare in today's business landscape. Two Game-Changing Projects You Need to Know About Jim pulled back the curtain on his current ventures, and they're both fascinating for completely different reasons. First is PwrScore, a that tool that measures and assesses brand resonance and compatibility using AI to minimize research bias and enhance brand capabilities through better data. The kicker? He's giving it away for free. Yes, really. This isn't some limited trial – it's a genuinely useful tool that most companies would charge thousands for, and Jim is just handing it out because he believes it can help businesses make better decisions. PwrScore.ai The second project might sound unusual, but it could change the world: plastic-free diapers. "Diapers last for a thousand years and they become these horrible microplastics that are bad for the world, and I just thought it could be possible to do it without plastic. So I've been working on it for five years with a team. We're this close to a breakthrough..." Think about it – billions of diapers end up in landfills every year, taking centuries to decompose and creating environmental havoc. If Jim cracks this code, the sustainability impact could be massive.

Tracy Cherpeski shares insights into the Practice Growth Readiness Intensive, a four-week program designed to help healthcare practice owners move from feeling overwhelmed to gaining crystal-clear direction. This snack episode reveals the market gaps driving demand for this intensive format and the measurable outcomes participants can expect.  Key Highlights:  The number one complaint from practice owners is always time, followed closely by burnout and isolation  Most clients don't see bottom-line changes for 90 days, but the intensive provides immediate clarity and a strategic roadmap  Ideal participants have at least one year of practice ownership experience and are financially stable enough to invest in growth  Physical changes often appear first - better sleep, reduced tension, faster decision-making  Average client ROI is 10x within 12-18 months, with most recouping their investment within 90 days  The program bridges the gap between clinical excellence and business leadership confidence  Memorable Quotes: "There's such a difference between clinical excellence and confidence and business excellence and confidence."  "A lot of times once we get to know somebody, they'll confess later: 'Yeah, I feel like I don't really know what I'm doing,' and that's incredibly difficult for any highly trained professional to admit."  "You set the tone for the culture of your practice. And that can have an incredibly positive impact on your entire team, and that goes out to your patients and that ripples out to your community."  This episode offers a rare glimpse into the methodology behind helping healthcare providers reclaim their time while building thriving, sustainable practices. You're a busy professional with ADHD, and you feel like you're constantly fighting an uphill battle. But what if the problem isn't you….it's that you're using your brain's "operating manual" incorrectly? This episode is about moving past the idea that you need to be "fixed" and instead learning to honor how your ADHD brain actually works. By understanding its wiring, you can stop fighting yourself and start creating a system that allows you to thrive. Dave is an entrepreneur with ADHD, not a doctor. His advice comes from decades of executive and entrepreneurial experience as an adult with ADHD. Actionable Advice for Honoring Your ADHD Brain Acknowledge Your Wiring: Accept that your brain is wired for interest, novelty, and urgency, not routine. Don't compare yourself to neurotypical standards. Optimize for Energy, Not Just Time: Ditch the idea of "I'll just stay late" and start scheduling around your energy levels. Use External Structures: Your brain isn't lazy; it's overloaded. Use external cues like visual boards, phone reminders, and a “home base” for important items. Don't complicate it…just get things out of your head every day. Build Momentum Over Perfection: Motivation comes from starting, not from waiting to "get it right." Design for Dopamine: Your ADHD brain craves dopamine. Build rewards into your workflow, like a coffee break after a difficult task, and rotate your environments to boost stimulation and engagement. Practice Self-Compassion: High-achievers with ADHD often carry hidden shame. When you find yourself being self-critical, stop and say, "Not today." Acknowledge your wins, no matter how small, and ask yourself what worked this week so you can do more of it. **Do you want to work with Dave one-on-one? If you've ever launched a great product only to watch it struggle to sell, or you've relied on guesswork when it came time to price, it's time to stop winging it. This episode will show you how. In this episode, Adam takes you to Guimarães, Portugal, where he attended The Future Design of Streets conference, and came away seeing our streets in a whole new way.Streets aren't only about transport, of course. Importantly, they're about climate, equity, social life, and how we experience a city day-to-day.To explore this expanded view, we've put together four conversations with global thought-leaders shaping the future of our streets:Maria Vassilakou: The former Green Vice Mayor of Vienna, who led a decade of transformation in public space, mobility, and citizen participation. Under her leadership, Vienna became a model for affordable, accessible public transport.Demetrio Scopelliti: Architect and Director of Urban Planning and Public Space at Milan's AMAT agency, working on the front lines of environmental and spatial transformation in one of Europe's major cities.Agustina Martire: Architect, Reader at Queen's University Belfast, specialised in the study of everyday streets, their fabric, histories and experiences, through the StreetSpace project. She is especially interested in the way people experience the built environment and how design can enable a more inclusive and just urban space.David Sim: Architect and author of Soft City: Building Density for Everyday Life. David brings a human-scale lens to urban design and planning. David talks about designing for comfort, connection, and how good cities make us feel.More about the conference: thefuturedesignofstreets.euFor ad-free listening, behind-the-scenes and bonus content and to help support the podcast - head to (https://www.patreon.com/StreetsAheadPodcast). In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Hershberg, Dr. Emily Upshur, and I talk about...   What to do if your child is assigned a teacher whose style may not seem like the best match. How to advocate for your child in a way that supports collaboration and avoids conflict. Why starting the school year with a proactive email to the teacher can set the tone for a strong partnership. The surprising benefits a strict or “old school” teacher might actually offer sensitive kids. How to prepare your child to advocate for themselves, build resilience, and navigate new classroom dynamics. What to do if things don't go as hoped—and how to intervene effectively if your child truly isn't thriving in the classroom.   If you're feeling anxious about the upcoming school year and unsure how to support your child through a potentially tricky teacher match, this episode will help you feel more grounded, empowered, and ready to approach it with openness and confidence.     REFERENCES AND RELATED RESOURCES:
