Vitamin K2 (MK-7) and Coronary Artery Calcification: Insights from a 2-Year Trial: Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses a two-year randomized clinical trial in JAMA Cardiology from Maastricht University Medical Center reporting that daily vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7, MK-7) at 360 mcg slowed progression of coronary artery calcification (CAC) in 180 patients with confirmed atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and baseline CAC 50–400 Agatston units. Compared with placebo, consistent MK-7 use was associated with 29% lower CAC progression and 42% less arterial calcium mass progression, though CAC still increased in both groups; stenosis increases were numerically lower with MK-7 but not statistically significant. Leyla notes many participants were on statins and were smokers, highlighting that statins can raise CAC by stabilizing soft plaque via calcification. The trial suggests MK-7 may slow calcification in newer plaques, may improve arterial elasticity via matrix GLA protein activation, is inexpensive and safe, but clinical event reduction remains unproven; Leyla suggests considering MK-7 (possibly 360 mcg) with vitamin D, magnesium, and dietary measures.

How do you help someone whose chronic bloating, abdominal distension, digestive issues, hormone imbalance, and fatigue keep returning, even after working with multiple practitioners? In this episode of the Health Detective Podcast, Michele Scarlet sits down with FDN Practitioner Becca Chilczenkowski, co-owner of FitMom Functional Health, to break down one of her most complex Functional Diagnostic Nutrition case studies. Together, they explore how a woman struggling with severe bloating, recurring H. pylori, parasites, reflux, constipation, dermatitis, fibroids, weight gain, exhaustion, and hormone challenges finally experienced lasting Health Transformation through a layered, whole-body approach. Rather than chasing symptoms or relying on aggressive protocols, Becca explains why supporting Functional Health begins with restoring digestive capacity, improving stomach acid, bile flow, nutrient absorption, and immune resilience before introducing targeted Healing Protocols. She shares how Functional Lab Testing, blood work, and GI-MAP testing helped uncover hidden stressors driving chronic inflammation and why rebuilding the body's foundations produced long-term results. The conversation also explores Gut Health, Hormone Health, Functional Medicine, Root Cause Healing, digestive enzymes, HCl, ox bile, immune support, fasting strategies, metabolic flexibility, and the importance of nervous system regulation. Michele and Becca discuss why many women dealing with Chronic Illness, Burnout, bloating, and hormone issues often need less stress, not more exercise, and why personalized care consistently outperforms one-size-fits-all protocols. They also discuss collaborating with medical teams for hormone therapy and peptides while staying within the FDN scope of practice, highlighting how Health Coaching, Practitioner Education, and teamwork create better client outcomes. Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Nathan Jones, founder and CEO of Xlear, Inc.
Nathan Jones, founder and CEO of Xlear, Inc., reveals xylitol's role in supporting oral and nasal “gateway” microbiomes by selectively starving acid-producing Strep mutans rather than indiscriminately killing bacteria, and warns that harsh mouthwashes can disrupt beneficial oral bacteria linked to nitric oxide production and possibly blood pressure. Jones outlines Spry and Xlear products (gum, mints, toothpaste, mouthwash, dry-mouth “Rain,” and upcoming gummy candies, a new dental probiotic with added nutrients, and a direct-to-consumer oral bacteria test kit with pre/post tracking). He discusses diet, emphasizing sugar as a key driver of cavities and criticizing limited focus on sugar in a Surgeon General oral health report. In part two, Jones describes ongoing and planned legal actions against the FTC over shifting evidentiary standards and reputational damage, then reviews Xlear's allergy and respiratory approach via nasal hygiene, product tiers (regular, Max with quercetin, Rescue botanicals, and a decongestant), and a forthcoming ectoine-based spray to support mucus barrier integrity.
Dr. Tony Ebel sits down with Sharon Cryan, founder of FoodNerd, for a deep dive into one of the most overlooked pillars of children's health: not just what's in our food, but how it's made. Sharon shares her powerful origin story — born to a single mother with MS, watching chronic illness shape the world around her — and how that journey led her from law school to revolutionizing food manufacturing. Together, they unpack the truth about ultra-processed foods, the gap in processing transparency that even health-conscious parents miss, and why natural flavors aren't as safe as they sound. Sharon also breaks down FoodNerd's Cold Processing Nutrient Lock Technology, the critical first 1,000 days of a child's life, and why their products are specifically formulated for kids on the autistic spectrum. Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Dr. Nathan Bryan, international Leader in Molecular Medicine, the first to describe nitrite and nitrate as indispensable nutrients required for optimal cardiovascular health.
Nitric Oxide Explained: Vascular Health, Exercise Performance, and N1o1 with Dr. Nathan Bryan, international Leader in Molecular Medicine, the first to describe nitrite and nitrate as indispensable nutrients required for optimal cardiovascular health. He details NO as a ubiquitous messenger affecting blood flow, erectile function, cognition, exercise performance, endothelial dysfunction, and aging-related declines in NO production. Bryan explains why PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra prolong cyclic GMP signaling but don't fix NO deficiency, and why beet products often fail due to variable nitrate content and inadequate dosing. He outlines his NO lozenge approach that generates NO gas from sodium nitrite and magnesium ascorbate, plus a fermented beet powder drink (NOBeets), and emphasizes the role of oral bacteria (and harms of antiseptic mouthwash/fluoride) in nitrate conversion. They review published endpoints, including flow-mediated dilation, blood pressure effects, inflammation markers, triglycerides, stem cells, plaque regression, applications to Alzheimer's, glaucoma/microvascular disease, safety/dosing considerations, risks of arginine supplementation, and a dual-chamber topical NO serum developed from wound-healing experience.
Almost is comfortable enough to feel like progress and far enough from commitment that the real test never arrives. Every Almost has a moment where the outcome could still go either way. The decision made before that moment shows up is the only one with enough strength to change the result. Waiting until the moment arrives to decide has been the whole problem. Making the decision in advance is how the Almost pattern finally ends. Your hormones have seasons — and somewhere in my 40s, mine changed the rules on me. In this episode, I walk through the three things that actually shifted: how much my gut became the lever for everything (the estrobolome is real, and so is my new sensitivity to skipping fiber), why I didn't lose my grit but redirected it toward what I value, and how I supplement now — like maintaining a car with 200,000 beautiful miles on her. I frame the whole thing as a letter: what I'd say to my younger self, and what I hope my older self says back to me. The thread underneath all of it — a deposit now for a fuller withdrawal later.

Sleep, Glymphatic Detox, and the Hidden Heart Risks of Sleep Apnea: Nutritionist Leyla Muedin explains how sleep supports brain “housekeeping” via the glymphatic system, a glial-lymphatic waste-clearance network most active during sleep that moves cerebrospinal fluid through brain spaces to remove metabolites and toxic proteins such as amyloid beta, with sleep deprivation linked to amyloid accumulation. She notes other clearance pathways, including meningeal lymphatic vessels, whose impaired function is associated with neurodegenerative disease and brain injury. Reviews of human studies suggest sleep influences glymphatic outcomes, though results are inconsistent and methods vary. She emphasizes that poor sleep is associated with dementia risk, depressive symptoms, cardiovascular events, mortality, and impaired glucose metabolism, and highlights lifestyle strategies that may improve sleep. She warns that untreated obstructive sleep apnea accelerates cardiovascular aging via intermittent hypoxia and inflammation, raising blood pressure and cardiovascular event risk, while treatment (e.g., CPAP) may halt or reverse damage.
The reason most health and fitness advice fails to stick has nothing to do with discipline. For a lot of people the method was simply never matched to how they actually learn and change. Trying to follow a system built for someone else's wiring is exhausting and rarely produces lasting results. Years can disappear trying to figure this out alone when the right guidance could have shortcut the whole process. Figuring out how you actually absorb, practice, and retain new habits changes everything. The right approach exists for you. It just might need someone who knows what to look for to help you find it. What if inflammation is the missing link behind so many of the symptoms women experience after 40? In this solo episode, Dr. Mariza breaks down the powerful connection between low-grade chronic inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, hormone changes, brain health, energy production, and accelerated aging. She explains why inflammation is far more than an immune system issue and how it silently influences nearly every aspect of health during perimenopause and menopause. Many women assume that fatigue, brain fog, stubborn belly fat, poor sleep, anxiety, joint pain, cravings, and declining energy are separate issues requiring separate solutions. But Dr. Mariza reveals how these symptoms are often interconnected through one common underlying process: inflammation. She also explores why perimenopause is not simply a hormone transition but a metabolic, vascular, and neuroendocrine transition that increases inflammatory burden and changes how the body responds to stress, blood sugar fluctuations, sleep disruption, and hormonal shifts. Most importantly, Dr. Mariza shares the practical lifestyle pillars she uses to lower inflammation, improve metabolic flexibility, support hormone health, and create the internal environment needed for healthy aging and long-term vitality. If you've been feeling like your body is changing but can't quite connect the dots, this episode will help you understand what inflammation may be trying to tell you. IN THIS EPISODE Why low-grade inflammation is one of the biggest drivers of symptoms after 40 The connection between inflammation, metabolism, hormones, and aging How perimenopause increases inflammatory burden throughout the body The labs Dr. Mariza recommends to assess inflammation and metabolic health Why blood sugar regulation is one of the fastest ways to lower inflammation The critical role of muscle, movement, sleep, and nervous system regulation How gut health influences inflammation, immunity, and metabolism Practical daily habits that help reduce inflammation and support healthy aging QUOTES“The goal isn't simply to lose weight. Accountability problems are rarely about discipline or systems. They are usually about a quiet belief that following through is just not something you do. That belief gets stronger every time the commitment gets dropped. The shift starts with a decision about who you are before the habit ever gets a chance to prove it. Once that decision is made the daily choices stop being negotiations. They become expressions of someone you have already decided to be. Most parents have heard that breastfeeding is beneficial. What far fewer understand is why those first feedings matter so much, what colostrum does beyond nutrition, and how early feeding choices shape the gut microbiome, immune system, and long-term health.Today, we're joined by Dr. Rhonda Trust, PhD, registered dietitian, professor of health communication, and longtime breastfeeding educator, for a conversation about newborn gut health, colostrum, skin-to-skin contact, formula supplementation, and the larger systems influencing infant feeding decisions. We talk about what happens when babies receive formula in the hospital before breastfeeding is established, why nutrition education is still surprisingly limited in conventional medical training, and how formula marketing continues to shape the messaging parents receive. We also get into donor milk, birth mode, bacterial transfer, and why the newborn microbiome is about far more than digestion. We discuss:• What colostrum actually does in the newborn gut • Why the first feeding matters differently from feeding decisions made later • How skin-to-skin contact helps establish a healthy microbiome • Why formula is so often introduced before breastfeeding is fully supported • The connection between gut health, immune development, and chronic illness • Why many pediatricians receive limited breastfeeding and nutrition education • The role of donor milk when breastfeeding isn't immediately possible • How modern infant feeding culture became so disconnected from biologyIf you've ever been told “a little formula won't hurt,” or wondered why the first few days matter so much, this episode provides much food for thought.**********Send us Fan Mail Needed

In this episode of the Health Optimization Medicine Podcast, the core faculty (Dr. Scott Sherr, Dr. Ted Achacoso, Dr. Jup Kuipers, and Dr. Allen Bookatz) tackles one of the most misunderstood topics in modern nutrition: fiber. Moving past the mainstream trend of "fiber-maxing," the team breaks down the actual biochemical realities of how different forms of fiber interact with your unique gut microbiome. From the surprising hormonal impacts of over-consuming fiber to the rise of localized conditions, this roundtable shifts the conversation from generic dietary rules to precise, measurable, cellular data. Join us as we delve into: The Classification of Fiber: Understanding the biological differences between soluble fiber (which breaks down into calories) and insoluble fiber (which adds bulk to stool). The Fiber Maxing Trap: Why forcing massive amounts of psyllium husk, acacia powder, and green drinks can aggravate conditions like Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and IBS. The Estrogen Heist: The hidden clinical correlation between high-fiber diets (60g+ per day) and the cessation of menstruation (amenorrhea) in female athletes. Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs): The crucial roles of propionate, acetate, and butyrate as genetic signalers and the primary fuel source for your large intestine. The Gut as an Immune Organ: Why managing the "gut-associated lymphoid tissue" (GALT) forms the basis of roughly 80% of human immune system function. This episode is for you if: You are experiencing worsening gas, bloating, and discomfort despite eating a "clean, high-fiber" vegetarian or whole-food diet. You want to learn how to test your stool for real-time butyrate levels instead of relying on generic probiotic protocols. You want to understand how your unique gut ecosystem mirrors a complex, balancing rainforest. Avoiding accountability is rarely about laziness. For a lot of people it is about protecting the option to quit without having to call it quitting. Finding flaws in every plan before starting is not discernment. It is a way of keeping the exit door open before commitment ever gets a real chance. A fifteen minute no matter what rule changed everything. Starting was always the only real obstacle and making it non negotiable turned out to be the whole solution. What if one of the biggest missing pieces of perimenopause isn't hormones at all? In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Mariza sits down with Ryan Woodbury, co-founder and co-CEO of Needed, to explore why nutrient deficiencies may be one of the most overlooked drivers of fatigue, brain fog, low energy, poor stress resilience, and other common symptoms women experience during perimenopause. Ryan shares the surprising personal experience that led her into the world of nutritional science and supplementation, including discovering her own nutrient deficiencies despite following a highly nutrient-dense diet. Together, they unpack the alarming research showing that most women are entering pregnancy, postpartum, and eventually perimenopause already running on depleted nutritional reserves. They discuss the shortcomings of traditional nutritional recommendations, why so many women remain deficient despite taking standard multivitamins, and how decades of stress, caregiving, disrupted sleep, pregnancies, and modern environmental demands create a perfect storm for depletion. Dr. Mariza and Ryan also dive into the critical role nutrients play in supporting hormone production, brain function, metabolism, cellular energy, blood sugar regulation, and healthy aging. Most importantly, they offer practical guidance for building a stronger nutritional foundation so women can thrive through midlife and beyond. If you've ever wondered why you still feel depleted despite doing "all the right things," this conversation will help connect the dots. RYAN WOODBURY Ryan Woodbury is the co-founder and co-CEO of Needed, a company dedicated to improving nutritional support for women across every stage of life. With a background in environmental science, nutrition, and food systems, Ryan has become a leading advocate for evidence-based nutrient support for fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause. Her mission is to help women move beyond bare-minimum nutrition and build the foundation needed for lifelong vitality. IN THIS EPISODE Why nutrient deficiencies are so common among women entering perimenopause The hidden impact of stress, caregiving, pregnancy, and postpartum depletion Why traditional multivitamins often fail to meet women's nutritional needs The critical role of vitamin D, magnesium, choline, omega-3s, and B vitamins How nutrient deficiencies contribute to fatigue, brain fog, and metabolic dysfunction Why foundational nutrition matters before adding targeted interventions The connection between blood sugar regulation, inflammation, and hormonal health How women can build a stronger foundation for energy, cognition, and healthy aging QUOTES“95% of women have at least one nutrient deficiency in a very key nutrient.” “You deserve to get what your body actually needs, not the bare minimum.” “When women reclaim their energy, they don't just change themselves, they change the world.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Subscribe now and get 20% off + FREE Shipping on your first NEEDED Supplement Order http://thisisneeded.com/DrMarizaSnyder Order my newest book: The Perimenopause Revolution https://peri-revolution.com/ Needed Website Needed InstagramNeeded Facebook Needed Academy Instagram RELATED EPISODES 754: How to Find Joy When Life Doesn't Go According to Plan with Amberly Lago 751: Bloating, Brain Fog & Hormone Chaos? Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with pediatrician and author Dr. Elizabeth Mumper.
Pandemic Policies, Vaccines, and Harms to Children: pediatrician and author Dr. Elizabeth Mumper discusses her book “Kids and COVID: Costly Mistakes That Must Never Happen Again.” Mumper argues parents should question authorities, citing early pandemic decisions such as lockdowns, masking, and a “one size fits all” vaccine strategy despite children's low risk from COVID. She supports the Great Barrington Declaration's focus on protecting high-risk groups and criticizes suppression of repurposed treatments like hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin. The discussion raises concerns about mRNA vaccine safety, biodistribution of lipid nanoparticles, underreporting to VAERS, loss of long-term control groups, myocarditis risk in young males, and claims of severe neurologic effects and “turbo cancers.” Mumper describes developmental, educational, and mental-health harms from masking and school closures, challenges vaccine mandates as violating informed consent, explains the cell danger response concept, and criticizes Paxlovid while favoring integrative approaches.

Most women don't find gut health because they think there is a gut issue. They find it because they're trying to understand the symptom right in front of them.In this episode, Juniper shares the deeply personal story of trying to understand her son's eczema, reflux, colic, food allergies, mucus-filled stools, behavioral challenges, and speech delays and how she eventually realized these symptoms were not separate problems, but communication connected to the gut. This episode is for the woman or mother who has been chasing symptoms one by one and wondering why nothing has fully made sense yet. You'll learn why the symptom is the doorway, not the whole story, and how gut health is connected to digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, inflammation, skin, mood, cravings, energy, the nervous system, hormones, and how reactive or resilient the body feels. If you've been trying to understand your symptoms, or your child's symptoms, through disconnected answers, this episode will help you begin seeing the pattern underneath it all. What if some of the most powerful medicines aren't found in a prescription bottle – but in the microbes living inside traditional fermented foods? Vanessa Hargrove joins the podcast to explain how foods like kefir, kombucha, yogurt, sauerkraut, and sourdough may help restore the microbiome, reduce inflammation, improve digestion, curb sugar cravings, and support overall health. Vanessa shares her own dramatic healing journey – from debilitating joint pain and severe food sensitivities to vibrant health through ancestral nutrition and fermentation. The conversation explores how modern life may be damaging the microbiome through glyphosate, antibiotics, chlorinated water, and antimicrobial household products – and why rebuilding beneficial microbes may be one of the missing keys to better health. Vanessa also discusses the powerful role fermented foods may play in supporting digestion, mood, immunity, hormone balance, and even chronic gastrointestinal conditions. She explains the science behind targeted microbes, why homemade ferments differ dramatically from many store-bought versions, and offers practical guidance for beginners who want to start incorporating ferments into daily life without feeling overwhelmed. The episode also covers fermentation safety, sourdough, milk kefir, candida overgrowth, histamine intolerance, sugar addiction, and why Vanessa believes restoring the body's microbial ecosystem can profoundly change health and vitality.
