In this episode of Trail Society, Corrine, Keely, and Hillary break down an action-packed World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, where Team USA came away with hardware and Hillary surprised us all with a double, competing in both the vertical and the long trail events. Hilly shares what it was like to rock the Team USA kit, how she pivoted from preparing for a one-hour climb to suddenly taking on an 80km ultra, and what she learned from the experience. The crew also highlights the story of Clarivel Vega, this year's 30km Javelina Trail Society Scholarship recipient. A first-generation Latina and lifelong runner, Clarivel has found strength, resilience, and belonging in the running community after growing up without family support for her sport and managing a chronic illness. From her roots in Santa Ana with Keep Runnin Santa Ana to her new adventure on the trails, her story is a powerful reminder of why representation matters and why we're committed to getting more underrepresented runners to the start line.   HUGE thanks to our sponsor rabbit for helping us with this scholarship. “Migration is grace,” says UCLA professor Robert Chao Romero, author of Brown Church: Five Centuries of Latina/o Social Justice, Theology, and Identity. In this episode, he joins Mark Labberton to discuss the immigration crisis through stories from Southern California, theology of migration, and the challenge of Christian nationalism for the American response to the immigration crisis we face. Romero narrates heartbreaking accounts of ICE raids, racial profiling, and dehumanization, while also offering hope rooted in scripture and the early church. He points out the “Xenodochias” of the ancient and medieval church that cared for migrants. And he shows how biblical narratives—from Abraham to Jesus—reveal God's mercy in migration. Romero calls Christians to see the image of God in migrants, resist the “Latino threat narrative,” and reclaim the church's historic role in welcoming the stranger. Episode Highlights “Migration is grace. … You wouldn't have a Bible without migration.” “Jesus lived and died as an outsider in solidarity with all outsiders, and he rose to new life among outsiders.” “The gospel is an outward pushing invitation… it is the pushing out actually into the far and remote places of suffering in need.” “This level of targeting of the Latino community has not happened since 1954 and Operation Wetback.” “We think that crossing the US border is like crossing the Jordan into the promised land, and we're baptized into the Yankee Doodle song.” Helpful Links and Resources Brown Church by Robert Chao Romero UCLA César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o and Central American Studies and in the Asian American Studies Department. With a background in law and history, his research and teaching explore the intersections of race, immigration, faith, and justice. He is the author of Brown Church: Five Centuries of Latina/o Social Justice, Theology, and Identity (IVP Academic), which chronicles the long history of Latino Christian social justice movements. Romero is also an ordained pastor, active in local church ministry and theological reflection on immigration, Christian nationalism, and the global church. Show Notes Immigration Crisis and ICE Raids Student testimonies of fear and trauma at UCLA during immigration crackdowns Stories of ICE targeting bus stops, car washes, and Home Depots in Southern California Latino citizens, veterans, and even high school students detained despite legal status A man fleeing ICE was killed in traffic, sparking vigils and protests Historical Parallels and Christian Nationalism Comparison to Operation Wetback of 1954, when over one million were deported Escalating racial profiling, reinforced by Supreme Court decisions “Latino Threat Narrative” portrays Latinos as criminals and unwilling to assimilate Christian nationalism merges citizenship and faith, echoing “manifest destiny” Theology of Migration and Outsiders Migration as grace: God intervenes with compassion in nearly every biblical migration story “We live alongside the world. We don't belong to the world.” “ Jesus lived and died as an outsider in solidarity with all outsiders, and he rose to new life among outsiders.” (Jorge Lara-Braud) Jesus as an asylum seeker in Egypt; Ruth and Joseph as biblical migrants Early church created “xenodochias”—ancient and medieval social service centers for immigrants and the poor Outsider theology: Christians as strangers and aliens, called to care for outsiders “Jesus lived and died as an outsider in solidarity with all outsiders.” Policy Challenges and Misconceptions Millions of mixed-status households trapped by the “10-year bar” in immigration law Asylum seekers legally present cases at the border under U.S. law Refugees undergo extensive vetting, often over decades Common myths about immigrants as “illegal” are contradicted by law and history Faith, Empathy, and the Church Empathy as central to Christian response, counter to narratives of fear and scarcity Latino pastors passing on both the gospel and nationalism from missionary influence The church historically provided refugee care before the UN Refugee Agency existed Worship with immigrant congregations as a source of hope and resilience Orthodox theology: worship joins heaven and earth, every tribe and nation before the Lamb Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.

With more than 25 years leading at the intersection of capital, innovation, and culture, Cynthia has proven herself a powerhouse in entrepreneurship and growth strategy. Her story begins in the unlikeliest of places: a receptionist desk at a computer repair shop in the mid-80s. From there, she witnessed the tech industry's birth, climbed the ranks at Ingram Micro, and navigated the turbulence of early startups, including a devastating betrayal by a business partner. But rather than stepping back, she leaned into every challenge, becoming one of the few Latina women to raise $15 million in private equity and ultimately selling her company Todobebé after a decade of pioneering media, parenting content, and cultural storytelling.Cynthia shares the pivotal lessons that fueled her success, from the importance of listening deeply to your customers, to the courage of saying “yes” to unfamiliar challenges, to the discipline of surrounding yourself with advisors who tell you the hard truths. She reminds us that entrepreneurship is not just about scaling fast, but about staying grounded in what people actually need, not just what founders imagine. Her reflections stretch beyond business into the deeper realities of being a woman in leadership: the sacrifices, the biases, and the double standards that continue to shape the funding landscape. Yet Cynthia's approach is one of fierce generosity, mentoring other women, championing female investors, and encouraging founders to build smarter, more sustainable businesses. This is a story of grit, creativity, and impact, and a masterclass in building with purpose. Tune in to hear Cynthia Nelson's remarkable journey and her wisdom for the next generation of women entrepreneurs.Chapters

In Leading Toward Liberation: How to Build Cultures of Thriving in Higher Education (JHU Press, 2025), Dr. Annmarie Caño reimagines academic leadership as a practice rooted in liberation and equity. Drawing on her experiences as a Latina, first-generation college student, clinical psychologist, and higher education administrator, Caño shows how leaders can foster inclusive cultures where everyone thrives. Through a lens of liberation psychology, Caño outlines actionable strategies for transforming institutions into spaces of freedom and growth. From crafting a values-driven vision to navigating institutional obstacles, accompanying others in solidarity, and leading with courage, this book offers practical insights to create systemic change. In this guide to navigating and disrupting the status quo to promote freedom and growth, Caño explains how to lead courageously, grow liberatory leadership skills, and plan career steps. Each chapter concludes with reflective self-coaching questions that empower readers to assess and refine their leadership journeys. Leading Toward Liberation offers an antidote to toxic and unhealthy academic cultures that silence or force out talented colleagues and stifle creativity. Addressing challenges like hierarchical norms, burnout, and the marginalization of underrepresented voices, Caño inspires readers to rethink leadership as a shared endeavor of transformation. With a keen focus on the intersections of identity and power, this is an essential resource for leaders seeking to dismantle oppressive systems and co-create healthier academic environments. Our guest is: Dr. Annemarie Caño, who is a professor of psychology at Gonzaga University and a two-time Fellow of the American Psychological Association who has held leadership positions at public and private universities. Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, who is an editor and a writing coach. She is the producer of the Academic Life podcast, and writes the show's newsletter at christinagessler.stubstack.com.

Did you know that being grateful and being a people pleaser are two different things? It can sometimes feel like they're the same, but being a people pleaser means that you are self-sacrificing for someone else, like your parents, for example. There's no sacrifice in feeling or being grateful. So why does it feel like we can't be good daughters if we're not self-sacrificing?    People pleasing is more prevalent than you think, especially among first-generation Latinas. Our parents sacrificed so much to get us the best opportunities they could, so sometimes it feels selfish to do anything other than what they want. It can also feel like you can never take risks because you don't want to seem ungrateful for everything they've done for you. So how do we break this habit and choose ourselves without hurting our relationships in the process?   In this week's episode, we're sharing a workshop I created for the  Understanding People Pleasing Summit with Cora Rennie. People pleasing is a trap, and it will keep you stuck in a self-made cycle of self-sacrifice for way too long. By talking about it, we can identify these habits within ourselves and take the first steps to break out of that cycle. Join me and hundreds of other listeners as we break the people-pleasing cycle and take aligned action now.    Resources Mentioned: www.theerikacruz.com/guided-visualization   Follow Erika on: Instagram @‌theerikacruzTikTok @‌theerikacruzLinkedIn Website: http://www.theerikacruz.com How to work with Erika: Join the waitlist for the Courage Driven Latina program here. When Texas passed its six-week abortion ban in 2021 and Roe v. Wade was overturned, some local abortion clinics considered moving to the neighboring state of New Mexico to grant abortion and female care access to women from both states. However, some residents in New Mexico opposed it. Now, Texas has passed a law further restricting access to abortion by targeting abortion pills, and its measures are also affecting eastern New Mexico. In this episode, we travel to New Mexico to meet Latinas and Latinos who have mobilized to protect abortion access there, while others are trying to revive an obscure law from the 19th-century to stop clinics from opening. This story from 2024 recently won a Webby Award.
