INDECLINE is an art collective that's been promoting “critical thinking through mischief” (John Doe's words) for the past 20 years. Through graffiti, multi-city simultaneous political art installation debuts, the largest illegal graffiti mural ever, and hanging a 40-foot banner across the chest of the giant Jesus monolith in Eureka Springs, Arkansas that read “God Bless Abortions,” INDECLINE have several examples of how they've used art to spread a message. By using culture jamming, INDECLINE are able to use the major media outlets and the thousands of billboards that litter the sides of Interstates, or clutter city centers, in order to use the momentum of the major propaganda machines against themselves in a form of marketing judo to spread social awareness rather than consumerism and divisiveness. But they're also clowns, too. (Again, John Doe's words.) INDECLINE are the jesters thumbing their noses at the courts. Humor, empathy, conversation, unity…all words heavy used in the INDECLINE ethos. At least that's how I see them. I'm also a big fan of what they've been doing for the past 20 years now that I'm starting to dig through some of the work INDECLINE have done. Honestly, most of INDECLINE's body of work is completely new to me. Thankfully, there's plenty of videos anybody and have access to that put a visual component to some of what you're going to hear in this episode. There’s a book that Ada Calhoun, author of “Why We Can’t Sleep: Women’s New Midlife Crisis“ thinks of as both one of her favorites to read out loud with her son, as well as one that has inspired her own writing. It’s “A Street Through Time: The 12,000 Year Journey Along the Same Street,” Illustrated by Steve Noon and written by Anne Millard. The book is the story of one street, leading the reader through historical events and the passage of time, with the street itself starring as the main character. My name is Ada Calhoun and I'm the author of "Why We Can't Sleep Women's New Midlife Crisis." When I was the mother of a young child, I was reading this book to him and it was called "A Street Through Time: The 12,000 Year Journey Along the Same Street," Illustrated by Steve Noon and written by Dr. Anne Millard. The great thing about it, it's mostly pictures of the same street and every time you turn the page it's hundreds of years later. So the houses go up and there's an invasion. The houses come down and then they come back up again and then they get bigger. What I love about this book is, first of all, it gives you this amazing history lesson, because you see how world civilization has evolved over thousands of years. And then also it just gives you the sense of perspective about how small we are and how different things have been just not that long ago. And I love it that you'll see somebody will drop his sword in a battle and then another, 200 years later, someone will fish out the sword while they're out in their rowboat. And it inspired me a lot when I started working on a book about the history of my street, St. Mark's Place in the East Village, that's where I grew up, called St. Mark's is Dead: the Many Lives of America's Hippest Street. And I feel like I was really influenced by that way of looking at history. As you look at this, this one piece of land, and it's a stage and people come onto the stage and they have a fight or they have a conversation and then some people leave the stage and other people come on the stage. And so, thinking of the street as a stage where things change, but it's like a fixed place, was really, really helpful to me and I think it inspired me to do the book the way I did it. Then that book did pretty well. And then I was able to do another book and then I was able to do this book. So I kind of, I traced my whole career back to reading that children's book to my son many years ago. I like it because, yeah, we sort of think of that as anti-career time. In ways sometimes I think, okay, I'm not going to work right now. I'm going to focus on my child. Or I'm going to have to step away from my child and go do my work. But I think a lot of the best things with both are when they come together. And I think about now, reading that book to my son was really creative for me. It was really inspirational. And it, I feel like led basically my whole writing career in some ways. —This author recommends— A Street Through Time: A 12,000 Year Journey Along the Same Street —More from this author— Interview: The Things That Keep Gen X Women Up At Night

We’re having a long-overdue conversation about Shonen Jump’s culpability in perpetuating sexism in both its workplace culture and in its series. More specifically, it’s time to have a serious talk about how it has been enabling and rehabilitating not one, not two, but THREE known pedophiles. When I say this podcast was long overdue, I mean it. We originally recorded this way back last August, back when news of Act-Age writer Tatsuya Matsuki’s arrest for groping two female middle school students broke and the ensuing fallout. Dejected and infuriated about the news, we gathered on friends of ours who previously loved Act-Age and were left as similarly furious at Jump’s terrible history with sex pests to vent about our criticisms of the magazine - Twitter friends Your Anime Guy and RinReadsManga, and Kendra from the My Hero Academia Podcast and View from the Top! Haikyu!! podcast. For context, we recorded this podcast on August 22nd 2020, two weeks after Matsuki’s arrest and before… everything that happened afterward. It’s astonishing and bewildering how many stories involving Jump and pedophiles have propagated recently, and even if this podcast was recorded before many of these stories occurred, I think our conversation addresses a lot of ever-relevant points on what Jump’s done wrong in the past when it comes to dealing with offending mangaka in their employ and their culpability in perpetuating a sexist culture that attracts such sex pests to work for them. I hope you’ll listen to our criticisms and calls to action with an open-mind, and that this will be part of a continuing conversation calling out Jump and any institution that feels comfortable in perpetuating sexist attitudes that endanger and victimize women and children. Also please keep in mind this is not our be-all, end-all podcast for calling out sexism in the anime and manga industry as a whole either. This podcast was recorded in response to the Matsuki news so we approached this topic from the perspective of Shonen Jump and Act-Age fans specifically, but there are more angles to the problems of sexism in the industry and community than what we could address from that lens in this podcast. That’s a much bigger, broader conversation that will require us to gather a lot more voices to give their input, and we intend to follow up on this podcast to address those necessary points and perspectives in the future. So, with all that context and those disclaimers given… well, there’s no clean way to transition into a conversation this heavy, and I’ve kept you all waiting seven months too long already, so let’s just jump in. A lecture and Q&A session by Davenant Institute President Dr. Bradford Littlejohn entitled "Pride, Prejudice, and Precisianism: Richard Hooker on Why We Can't Get Along." American society today is polarized in the most intense ideological conflict for generations. The pandemic, anti-racism riots, and election of 2020 have all intensified the sense that that although we share a nation, many of us feel we live in a different country to our neighbours. The violence on Capitol Hill which began 2021 only proved this point further. In many quarters, the church has been swept up into these conflicts. Disagreements over recent events and "how we got here" have threatened to split congregations and denominations, especially for any who have long resided somewhere under the label of evangelicalism. Where does this conflict come from, and why does it seem to take on a life of its own? How can Christians diagnose and defuse the sources of conflict, while also standing up for principles that are worth fighting for? In this lecture, Dr. Bradford Littlejohn will use the striking insights of sixteenth-century theologian and political philosopher Richard Hooker to shed a spotlight on how we can get carried away by our convictions into ideological and political wars of mutually assured destruction - and how we can find our way out of them. Thanks to The Chapel of the Cross in Dallas, TX for inviting Dr. Littlejohn to lecture on these topics last September. The best nonprofits, however, commit to a vision the exceeds the direct impact of their programs and services but also seeks to positively influence their communities at large. Karen Lee is a great example of a nonprofit leader just like that, as she manages one of the largest social enterprise organizations in the United States, Pioneer Human Services based in Seattle, WA. In episode #83 of the Path Podcast, Karen shares much wisdom from her career journey including how she’s integrating advocacy into her leadership agenda, how she’s maximizing fundraising and philanthropy, and how she’s using her talented board volunteers across the state of Washington. ABOUT KARENAs Chief Executive Officer of Pioneer Human Services, Karen leads one of the nation’s largest nonprofit social-enterprise organizations in the United States. Under Karen’s leadership, Pioneer successfully operates several revenue-generating businesses that provide living wage jobs to mission-related employees and help fund its mission of empowering people who have been involved in the legal system to build healthy, productive lives. Headquartered in Seattle, Pioneer serves over 10,000 people a year through its diversion, treatment, housing and job training programs. Today is Dr. Martin Luther King day in the United States, and I am honored to have the opportunity to dive a bit deeper into his work, particularly as we face such a difficult and contentious time in our country.  When you think about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. What comes to mind? You probably think of his famous “I Have a Dream Speech,” his emphasis on non-violence, or one of his famous quotes about love, such as “Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.”  These often highlighted aspects of his work are absolutely an accurate depiction of who he was and what he stood for...but they are an incomplete depiction who he was and what he fought for.  As White Americans, we often sugarcoat and whitewash the legacy of Dr. King, while remaining ignorant of the true focuses on his work and how it remains largely unfinished today.  I am as guilty of this as anyone else, which is why I sought out two experts to be our guests on the podcast today, Mike and Emily Green of http://commongroundconversations.com (Common Ground Conversations on Race in America).  Mike and Emily are going to talk to us about the three major systemic focuses of Dr. King’s work and what we as mothers can do to continue his work ourselves, as well as raise children who will be aware of injustice and willing to fight for true equity in our country.  I want to acknowledge upfront that this episode is going to be dense. There may be terms that you don’t recognize, history that you are unfamiliar with, and possibly even facts shared that make you feel uncomfortable or defensive. My challenge for you is just listen. Listen and learn. Take notes of things you don’t understand or you want to look up later and learn more about.  The best way that we can honor Dr. Martin Luther King today and every day is to learn his history and the history of our country, even the stuff that makes us uncomfortable–and to have the courage to look at current conditions and acknowledge inequalities, particularly for communities of color. It is my greatest hope that this episode will be a springboard for you to learn more and think more deeply, to have discussions with your families, within your communities and schools and local governments, and seek for equitable solutions for all of our children. *** Three Focuses on Dr. Martin Luther King’s Work and the Negro Revolution:  End racial segregation in schools  End racial discrimination in housing/homeownership  End racial discrimination in banking and access to capital  These three areas are very connected to each other, and unfortunately, research shows that a huge disparity between white America and Black America continues to exist in all three of these areas.(Listen to the full interview for more history and data.) *** Quotes from the Episode: ”We inherited a society that we did not have a hand in creating, but we do have a role to play in the society that we pass on to future generations.”  Mike Green “We can’t teach what we don’t know.” Emily Green “Even though this learning can feel overwhelming, the truth is that as we learn, a next right step really does open up for us.” Emily Green *** Show Notes http://commongroundconversations.com (CommonGroundConversations.com) Connect with Emily on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emilygreen27/ (@emilygreen27) https://keybookstore.com/woocommerce-search/keyword/why+we+can%27t+wait/search-in/product/cat-in/all/search-other/product (Why We Can’t Wait) by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr ^Consider purchasing from a black-owned bookstore instead of Amazon! Then we analyze the rule changes at the British Academy of Film & Television Awards before leading into our big sprawling discussion on how the Oscars and the Industry could and should proceed through yet another major covid based schedule shake up. So we decided to recap all of the news, review all the trailers, and preview all the film slates one movie studio at a time. We start with Warner Brothers because we’re transitioning from the Tenet box office obituary into the latest moves for Dune, The Batman, and the HBO Max announcement for The Witches. Netflix is next, and we update you on The Prom, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, & Mank as we discuss their Fall & Winter film slates. Then Also Mike teases his review of The Trial of the Chicago 7 before we review the second trailer for Over The Moon, and then, all chaos erupts. For Mike1 is an agent of chaos as he decides to pitch a radical idea for this year’s Oscars 2020/21 ceremony & ABC’s (Disney owned/Netflix biased?) broadcast. How crazy is this idea? You’ve gotta listen to find out. But don’t worry, we cover most of the other movie studio slates from Disney / Searchlight to Universal / Focus to Neon / Hulu to A24 / Apple to BBC / Amazon, and we preview / speculate about all their films from The French Dispatch & Next Goal Wins to Promising Young Woman & Zola. Plus, we review more trailers in the process like Minari, Sound of Metal, Supernova, & Borat 2. As always, share your thought with us. We’re talking things like finances, marriage, career, aging parents and anxiety. These ladies help Gen X women create sustainable change using proprietary tools that combine brain science and energy leadership . You may have seen them in Business Insider, Entrepreneur, Thrive Global, Tiny Buddha or TEDX. Please welcome today’s guests, Jackie Ghedine + Mimi Bishop.Jackie and Mimi looked around and realized there weren't many resources towards their GenX peers. All the while, women in this age group were struggling with finances, aging parents, special needs kids and now Coronavirus, homeschooling and more. They launched The Resting Mind based off an article, then book, by Ada Calhoun, titled "Why We Can't Sleep."They strive to help women give themselves permission to focus on what THEY want vs serving everyone else's needs and expectations first.Generally, they have found that GenX women know they are unhappy, but they don't quite know why. This generation has both the freedom and the pressure of being the first women that truly had career choices, such as doctor vs nurse and CEO vs secretary. Add to that all the normal parenting, relationship and career stresses and now a pandemic and volatile social climate, and Jackie & Mimi have seen their business grow helping women in 2020.They talk about tools such as The 8% Rule and the Worry Log to help their clients reframe stress and anxiety, raising energy levels and confidence. A big part of the puzzle is to help GenX women and all humans to understand that we have more choice about what happens around us than we think. No longer do you need to live with your off-the-charts chronic stress. What are best-practices for alleviating stress in the workplace? Today I talked to Cary Cooper about his new book The Apology Impulse: How the Business World Ruined Sorry and Why We Can't Stop Saying It (Kogan Page, 2020). Cooper explains why managers should say “Sorry, I Wasn't Feeling." Cooper is the author/editor of over 250 books, and the president of the British Academy of Management. An advisor to the World Health Organization and the EU, he's received both a knighthood and the CBE award from the Queen of England for “extraordinary contributions” to society. Topics covered in this episode include: The difference between operational and cultural failures, and why CEOs find it easier to apologize for the latter by pretending the problem has to do with the former. The percentage of workers who feel bullied by a boss at work on a constant basis, and Cooper's estimation of the percentage of bosses who won't be able to benefit from EQ-training and, therefore, should be given roles that don't involve managing people. What the implications and solutions for huge CEO pay amid what could now prove to be the single most significant economic downturn in our lives (due to Covid-19). So excited to share with you the conversation I had with Margo Candelario  who is one of four generations working on Young Female Farmers. These powerful women own and run a farm in Georgia, outside of Athens and are serving food deserts with her delicious produce, pastries and herbal goodies. They have been featured on NPR for changing the outlook of the farming industry and featured in the Huffinton Post as one of the top 30 under 30 businesses. Be sure to follow their work @youngfemalefarmers. Margo is also an author, poet, and artist and created a book called “Looking to the Clouds for Daddy.” Margo is a wonderful storyteller and we discuss the difference of working around pain versus working through the pain of a situation and the power of owning your own business and the experience of collaborating with a friend to write a book. She also discusses her experience as a Black Woman living in Georgia right now.  And gives a painful reminder that we have so far to go to create racial equity in this country. There is so much we can do right now to heal and to help create more racial equity and justice. In Episode 63, Helen Dea Bala (author of Craigslist Confessional) shares why she started Craigslist Confessional, how she decided to quit her job to pursue Craigslist Confessional full-time, and shares her own story of immigrating to the U.S. from Albania. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Announcement [00:55] Y’all know I had always planned to air the podcast bi-weekly through the summer. As the summer has progressed, I’ve realized how burned out I am (this probably isn’t a surprise to y’all if you’ve been reading between the lines of my recent posts). The last couple months of quarantine with 2 young children, having to manage all their distance learning, and lacking any childcare completely drained me. I pushed through because there was an end point. It’s now becoming apparent that school will not resume as normal in the Fall, which will require me to put structure in place to make sure our lives can run smoothly for the longer-term.   I need some time and space to be able to think clearly (rather than frantically turning my wheels to keep churning out content) and plan for how the podcast will look and how my family’s life will run in the future. So, I’ve decided to take a FULL break from the podcast following today’s episode…most likely until mid-August.  My plan at this point is to return with a new full length episode on August 19 and resume a normal schedule from that point on. In the meantime, I’ll still be sharing what I’m reading on the blog and sometimes on Instagram. AND, my bonus podcast content for patrons (support the podcast on Patreon here) will NOT change during my break. I’ll still be releasing 2 bonus episodes per month…one book recommendations episode and one Superlatives episode. I consider this podcast a marathon, not a sprint. I’m committed to it and want to ensure I’m able to give it my all over the long term. Thank you all so much for your understanding and know that I appreciate every one of you so much! I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback in the comments. Highlights How a conversation with a homeless man in front of her D.C. office building gave Helena the idea for Craigslist Confessional. The story of quitting her job as a lobbyist to pursue Craigslist Confessional full-time. How her parents (who were extremely proud of her job as a lobbyist) felt about her quitting to do Craigslist Confessional full time…and how their feelings were shaped by their immigrant experience. How / why she decided to just listen to her Craigslist subjects without offering advice and what that was like. The logistics of getting these personal conversations into book form. How she cared for her own mental health while being enmeshed in these oftentimes horrific stories. What it was like to listen to stories told by the person who was doing the harm (rather than the victim). The two subjects she’s kept in communication with since their initial conversations. Gen X has been dubbed “America’s neglected middle child,” stuck between Baby Boomers and Millennials. But it’s Gen X women who face particular pressures and burdens that are contributing to their own (often overlooked) midlife crisis. They’re caring for young children and aging parents – all while running the household and working full-time. Ada Calhoun, author of the New York Times best-seller, Why We Can’t Sleep: Women’s New Midlife Crisis, says all this has left Gen X women feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, and exhausted. She shares research from her book and what she learned from more than 200 middle-aged women. Ada explains why this generation of women were raised to believe in the fantasy that they could “have it all,” the consequences of unrealistic expectations, and ways Gen X women can find relief and, finally, get a good night’s sleep. Listen to this episode to learn: ●Lessons and stories from Gen X women from around the country ●The impact that quarantines and closed schools and daycares is having on Gen X women in the workforce ●Why so many Gen X women are experiencing “anticipated loss” ●The price middle-aged women pay for taking on the burden of caregiving responsibilities – both for children and aging loved ones ●Ways employers can step up and better support middle-aged working moms ●The importance of finding a support network and realizing that this phase in life will eventually pass For more information, visit www.adacalhoun.com.

In today's episode I'm speaking with author Ada Calhoun about her book "Why We Can't Sleep: The New Midlife Crisis." We dive deep into the reasons why Generation X women are so stressed and filled with anxiety. GenX women growing up were told that we "can do anything" but it doesn't mean we have to do everything.  Here are few of the takeaways you'll get from this episode:  -We are making our own paths in midlife. - There are few doctors that focus on perimenopause and menopause. 80% of women have severe symptoms in menopause.  -Women are feeling stuck in their careers in midlife and feeling sidelined.  -Women in their 50s are getting pushed out of jobs due to ageism and sexism. -The New Midlife Crisis is a perfect storm of stress and anxiety. We have our phones blaring at us, work, kids and aging parents and no one is really talking about it.  -The bar has been set really high in parenting.  -We have a resilience that came from growing up the way we did. We're used to figuring out things for ourselves.

On the Well Woman Show this week, I talk to Ada Calhoun whose new book, Why We Can't Sleep, Women's New Midlife Crisis really digs into Generation X women and our particular set of challenges. She is also the author of the memoir Wedding Toasts I'll Never Give, named one of the top ten memoirs of 2017 by W magazine; and she writes for The New York, and The New Republic. Gen X women are born 1965-1980 and are likely raising small children in their 40s or dealing with infertility issues, we are caring for aging relatives and they are trying to create a better life for their kids than they had. On the show this month, we talk about: - How gen x women were told we could do anything but didn't actually have the resources - Why the current generation of women facing midlife have such strong anxiety and -Why society perpetuates the idea that all women need to do to get ahead is to try harder. ABOUT SUCCESSFULLY CHAOTIC : I have a confession...I suck at lots of things...I mean it. As a business owner, wife, and mom of 7 kids (one on the autism spectrum) I get PLENTY of opportunities to mess things up. I have had my “go get ‘em” moments where I shine (for a moment) only to fall down a hill, burst into flames and drag myself back up the other side. I have had more than my fair share of life’s chaos. Some I had no control over and some I helped along. So how can I be successful in the midst of life’s chaos? I think the idea that someone reaches success is a unicorn. We are all constantly growing, and changing. What means success to us today isn't what it meant 20 years ago. The first step is defining how YOU define success. We talk with people who have experienced the OWN chaos and have came out on top. We want to share our mess ups, as well as our "ah ha" moments, all while giving you nuggets of helpful information that you can use in your own life and business. Also, not to be the people who talk about our meditation experiences, but we kind of can’t shut up about this one time, ok?   The linkage:   Hit up the Sky Ting yoga classes taught by Marisa Meltzer (in NYC) that we loved.   Check out Kim France’s podcast, which she co-hosts with Tally Abecassis, called Everything Is Fine and her fashion ‘n shopping blog Girls of a Certain Age. Both are ideal for women over 40 and the over-40-curious.   How Sassy Changed My Live, which the very same Marisa Meltzer co-authored with Kara Jesella, is itself iconic at this point.   Kim goes deep on her creative partnership with Andrea Linett while running Lucky in our book Work Wife.   For a preview of the book Kim is writing, read her Medium essays about the beautiful house that didn’t make for a beautiful life and depression at the Condé Nast holiday lunch. Oh, and read her essays on vanity and dressing your age for The Cut while you’re at it.   Speaking of editors in chief, Dan Peres (of Details) just released As Needed for Pain, and this NYT story about that whole late-nineties/early-aughts magazine era is pretty juicy.   Kim shops The RealReal (join the club!), Warm, and Maria Cornejo.   Shout out to the magazine Gossamer, which is for people who also smoke weed.   Two friends we lost much too soon: David Rakoff and Jason Polan.   Bring on that menopause content. See: Darcy Steinke’s book Flash Count Diary, Party Girl, this Broad City scene, and this Fleabag one.    You wanna talk about beauty stuff? Excellent! Kim is very into Drunk Elephant, SK-II Pitera Facial Treatment Masks, Tatcha The Silk Canvas Protective Primer, and Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. For a red lip, she’s all about Kosas in Royal, Lipstick Queen, and those Nars Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencils.    Kim’s watching Cheer, Fleabag, Killing Eve, The Crown, Victoria and reading Why We Can’t Sleep by Ada Calhoun, Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret, and (as always) Go Fug Yourself.   Produced by Dear Media

In this episode of Aim Higher, Skip interviews Paul Smith, one of the world’s leading experts in business storytelling. Paul was one of “Inc. Magazine’s” Top 100 Leadership Speakers of 2018. He’s a storytelling coach, and he shares with Skip some of the secrets from his new book, “The 10 Stories Great Leaders Tell.” Paul explains that we don’t make most of our decisions entirely logically; we make them in our subconscious and then we rationalize them. To influence people, we need to reach them at both levels, and good storytelling does that. He and Skip talk through several of the most important stories that great leaders should master, including “Where We Came From” (A Founding Story), “Why We Can’t Stay Here” (A Case-for-Change) and “Why You Should Want to Work Here” (A Recruiting Story). In the end, Skip and Paul agree… storytelling is a critical skill for leaders, and if you want to be good at it you can’t just “wing it.” You need to learn from an expert, and masters of the art – like Paul and Skip – can help.

We may periodically have the universal dream of either riding on a train or being about to take a train, anxious that we may miss it, have missed it, or are getting off the train. So, do we follow the movement of the train, or do we stay behind? We have choices. We may not always make choices consciously, but we do always choose intentionally. For instance, if we choose to go on a path of self-searching, hoping to find more meaning in life, we are making a choice—just as we are making a choice when we choose not to do this…When we live any day as though it doesn’t matter, we are making as active a choice as when we decide to listen within and figure out what is going on… Choices, choices, choices. Do we want to follow our inner evolutionary process or stay behind? We got options…Am I willing to be all-in? From one side of our mouth we may be saying ‘all aboard,’ but nevertheless, we’re holding something in reserve… Let’s be realistic here. It’s impossible to always be following our inner movement faithfully 100% of the time. If we were that aware, we wouldn’t be here on this dualistic planet…Holding on to the false reality we create with our misconceptions about life, our strategic defenses and our illusory fears, somehow makes us feel safe…We’re lazy and easily lured by the line of least resistance. We particularly enjoy the illusion that we aren’t required to move along on our evolutionary journey… The notion of an “illusory reality” may sound like an oxymoron, but it’s not. We constantly make up stories about life that simply aren’t true, causing us to live in this temporary state of illusion…Strange as this may seem at first, there isn’t anything we experience that doesn’t need to happen exactly as it does. This isn’t because a God-in-the-sky is meting out punishments and rewards; that kind of thinking totally misses the point. Rather, our experiences are the net result of where we are on our journey… To be angry, self-rejecting or impatient about where we are in our growth process is akin to a child being upset because it is not yet an adult…We stunt our growth when we’re impatient about our current state. We end up hating ourselves, denying this, feeling guilty and projecting this onto others. That’s how we cripple ourselves from expanding our consciousness—that’s how we miss our train. Listen and learn more. Read Gems, Chapter 2: The Evolutionary Process & Why We Can’t Stop It Read Original Pathwork® Lecture: #218 The Evolutionary Process www.phoenesse.com

Are you ready? Wait for it… DON’T MAKE THEM! Yep….don’t make them! Why I Don’t Make Resolutions I don’t make resolutions anymore, I realised it made January all the more depressing when within a week….ok ok, within a day or two….my plan to ‘cut out carbs’ inevitably fails. Plus, living like that is not really living! You’re constantly in a state of deprivation, always focusing on what you ‘can’t’ have….it then inevitably becomes ALL you want and that is HARD…it’s also VERY unhealthy. A Negative Way To Start Your Year The way I see resolutions is that they tend to end up being ‘fault picking’ exercises and an excuse to just highlight everything you think is wrong with yourself. They are usually inherently negative.  Not a great way to start your year off. Why We Can’t Stick To Resolutions Did you know that only 8% of us are actually successful at sticking to them?? 8%!! Why? A big reason is you’re leaving too much to chance. Resolutions are far too ‘fluffy’, they tend to not be either specific enough or measurable. Psychological research also shows that something called ‘ironic mental control’ exists and essentially means that the harder you focus on NOT doing something or being a certain way, it actually makes you do it more.  They call it the white bear problem. When someone says ‘don’t think about a white bear’ what instantly comes to mind? And the more you try NOT to think about it, the stronger the image becomes.   Normally we even set resolutions already believing we’re going to fail! We’re also not that into them! Know WHY You Want To Achieve Them If you don’t have a solid motivation, and a solid reason ‘why’ you want it then you’re more likely to give up or procrastinate.   If you connect to WHY you really want something you’re FAR more likely to achieve it. Ask yourself how things would look for you this time next year if you DID achieve it and if you want it bad enough it will be SO much easier to motivate yourself. Can you see why it’s so difficult?! It Doesn’t Happen Overnight People expect to break habits OVERNIGHT which is near impossible, and when you ‘fail’ it can really damage your self worth. EVERY year since I can remember I essentially tried to starve myself in January and resolved to lose a stone in weight in a ridiculous amount of time.  I’ve been through YEARS, at least half my life of yoyo dieting and i set myself up for failure time and time again by thinking that just by deciding it’s what I wanted then it would happen straight away. Shift Your Focus 2017 was the year that changed the cycle.  I changed my thought process and shifted my focus, I didn’t focus on the negative thing I wanted to change, having too many spare tyres, and made a conscious decision to be more healthy. I’d been struggling with arthritis and Patellofemoral pain syndrome in my knees so I was always uncomfortable and in pain and something needed to change.  I said at the beginning of the year I wanted to find an exercise I could do to improve the pain…and a nice little 20lb weight loss was an added bonus that came with it. So I ended up achieving what I wanted by attaching it to something that was actually positive, bigger and more important than wanting to be thinner. I started by making the decision to go to 2 Bikram yoga classes per week, I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a Bikram yoga class but let me tell you on days you have one of those (1.5 hours in 40 degree heat!) you will NOT want to drink in the day or even the day before, you will drink WAY more water than you would normally and you will NOT eat heavy meals!  So you don’t feel like you’re going to pass out or be sick you will make MUCH healthier choices naturally with zero effort. Make Goals Instead Or Resolutions! Pick positive goals, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic (but don’t be afraid to dream big!) goals ideally that directly conflict with what you do want to give up and also allow you to create the new positive habits you want to create with far less effort. Make sure you add in WHEN you want to have achieved it by. So pick goals that REALLY motivate you! Get Accountable! If you’re intent on making this year the year that you finally achieve what you really want to then get an accountability buddy or hire a coach (personal trainer for health or personal development coach for everything else!) that can get you there.   Resolutions tend to be BIG changes we want to make that can be overwhelming, but if you have someone to help you break it down into smaller steps and keep you accountable then you’re on your way to success! Use a journal or a habit tracker to keep you motivated and on the right track.  There are lots of printable versions on Etsy or Pinterest that you can put up on your wall so you see it every day. Celebrate Celebrate every teeny tiny little win along the way, promise yourself a treat once you achieve it for motivation.  I like to get people to do this when they’re setting goals, often they would hit them and then it would be straight onto the next one with no reflection or time to appreciate what you’ve achieved and the milestone that you’ve hit. It Takes Time Know that it will take time and you have to push through the hard bit to create the new neural pathways that allow you to form the new habits you need and THEN get you to the god stuff where it all becomes so much easier, it just becomes something you do.   Give yourself that time and understand it’s not supposed to be an overnight shift, it WILL be hard, it WILL be effort but if it’s worth it to you then STICK WITH IT and appreciate you are retraining your brain and KNOW that eventually it will become second nature. If you want a head start with this then book your ticket for Positive Pants Planing Live now.  The next 3 full price tickets purchased will get a bonus 45 minute 1:1 call with me. If you've been stuck, frustrated, overwhelmed or procrastinating on your business goals in 2018 and you KNOW you're what's standing in your way then this is the event for you. Have a think, Where would you be in your business without that annoying inner critic telling you you can't do things? What could being free from overwhelm and procrastination actually bring into your life? More freedom? More income? More calm? The Black Star line needs to be reborn. Many of you won’t know what that is…and that’s cool: that’s why you have me! LOL In the 1920’s, the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey had amassed a global membership of more than 12 million members in the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League. It scared a lot of people…a lot of White Supremacists and Lamb Chop’s Play Along Negroes who had a vested interest in protecting massa’s house. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5ayBJopYGI The threat level jumped to an all-new level when Garvey proposed the Black Star Line: a shipping line that would connect the African Diaspora both as people and with the goods and tools necessary for development. It was a move toward independence and an ability for Black people worldwide, to help Black people worldwide. The Black Star Line was the Key to Garvey’s Back to Africa Philosophy But, “Back to Africa” wasn’t about all of us getting back on boats and migrating to Africa. Back to Africa was a way of thought…a way of life: a conception that has us look to the African Diaspora first. To look to ourselves for help, to be equipped to help ourselves, so we no longer are left waiting for the benevolence of malevolent people. Similar to the Jewish/Zionist model - with Israel as their base and focus, "Back to Africa” is an ideology that would ultimately make Black lives matter throughout the world. (If you think it’s time to stop waiting and start making Black lives matter, download this free eBook) This becomes of critical importance in these times of disaster. As White supremacist greed compels Western Civilization to deny global warming in hopes to continue asserting Western hegemony, non-White people suffer. And in the relief efforts, the focus is always on rebuilding White areas, getting resources to White people, while non-White people are made to wait. One of the many things Dr. King was spot on about is “Why We Can't Wait.” The problem is, without our own way to provide relief and aid in development we have no choice but to wait. That exploration is the focus of this episode, and the questions raised are important. So, I really hope you would click the banner & join the Facebook group so we can continue the discussion. How does this help the Court argue against racially segregated schools? What role do legal precedents play in the Court's argument against "separate but equal" schools? What is meant by "intangible considerations" and how does this help the Court establish that the mere act of separating school children by race produces an unequal education? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Court's opinion in Brown? If segregated schools did not produce "a feeling of inferiority" on the part of black children, would these schools be unconstitutional according to Brown?   Why does King reject force as a response to oppression? What is the major concern of the white clergymen who counsel King to stay away from Birmingham? What are the four stages of civil disobedience? How does King's nonviolent resistance against a particular law actually support obedience to the government and laws? Why does King blame white moderates more than fringe elements like the Ku Klux Klan for lack of progress in securing civil rights for black Americans?   Readings Brown v. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Historians have a pretty hard time figuring out the past; should they also try to forecast the future? My guest on today's podcast, Professor David Hochfelder, believes that, in fact, historians are uniquely qualified to forecast what comes next. In one recent interview Professor Hochfelder is quoted as saying that he's never believed in “studying the past for the past’s own sake." He observes that, “The major rationale for studying history is to figure out how we got here, and if we answer that question, if we have that mind-set, the very next question is, ‘So where are we going after this?’” David Hochfelder is associate professor of history at the University of Albany, part of the SUNY system. An electrical-engineer-turned-historian, Dr. Hochfelder has written on the histories of technology and business, combining both in his book The Telegraph in America, 1832-1920. We're very pleased to have this provocative thinker as our guest this week on Historically Thinking. Join us as we talk about why the 19th century, not the 20th, experienced civilization's greatest technological leap; the difference between predicting and forecasting; what terms of art savvy forecasters like to use; and why. Ethnographer Whitney Phillips embedded with the trolls of 4chan, observing for years how anonymous members of its subversive "b" forum memed, pranked, harassed, and abused, all for the "lolz" — the thrill of doing something shocking. The result: a book, "This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things: Mapping the Relationship between Online Trolling and Mainstream Culture," that sheds light on how and why trolls do what they do. More than pushing the boundaries of taste within themselves — the "b" board recently made headlines for a case in which anonymous members allegedly goaded one of their own to cut off his own toe — troll behavior has had an incredibly broad impact on society. Trolling shaped the way social platforms and conversations on public forums take place. It is in no small part due to the spread of troll culture that comments sections, Facebook threads, and Twitter conversations can be minefields to productive conversation; the troll dialect is better equipped for shock and ironic bigotry than for sincerity, and a sincere conversation is just begging to be disrupted, especially when you disagree with your target. But while wrench-throwing can and has been a very important tool in online discourse, the web has started to outgrow trolls. In 2003 when 4chan was launched, there were under 700 million people on the Internet (predominantly higher income, younger, white, Western, male, and native English speakers), compared to 3.2 billion people today from many backgrounds. The incredible diversity of individuals all trying to have conversations on the same platforms has increased demand for civility, understanding, and inclusiveness, even as the conversations can seem more and more cacophonously problematic. And this threatens to make trolling less funny. Whitney joins us this week to talk about how troll culture has changed over the years, and what platforms can do to temper darker forms of discourse. Why We Can't Let Go of Our Clutter, Backing Up Your Digital Information, & A Little About Dropbox Be sure to subscribe in iTunes and leave a review in the iTunes store! It helps others find the show! Thank you! In Episode 3 we discuss reasons why some people can't seem to let go of clutter and some tips that may help you decide what to keep and what to let go.  We also talk about some lessons learned from a catastrophic hard drive crash which sparked the "Your Backup Strategy' strategy segment, and we wanted to sing a few praises for Dropbox. Dropbox is one way to save documents to the cloud and sync them across all your devices simply. Main Topics:   Vanessa's Topic: Why We Can't Let Go of Our Clutter We feel the need for abundance. We are a consumer-driven society and conditioned to think more is better...it's all about quantity over quality. We've lived a life "without" and find security with having more. Living through the Depression, growing up in a modest or poor  household, or surviving a rough financial patch can play a huge role in why folk don’t ever want to “live without” again. Forget Justin Bieber...we're more influenced by Justin Case.  You know, "I might need this someday...just in case." Some folks want to be ultra-prepared for any scenario. It's ok to be prepared, but try to be realistic...especially if all that stuff is getting in the way. We feel a sense of obligation. Many feel a sense of obligation to keep every gift. It's ok to hold on to things but you do have the ability to say no. We fear losing the memory if we get rid of something. Many of us have had wonderful and meaningful experiences throughout our lifetime but we fear that if we get rid of a gift, we’ll forget that person, experience or important time in our life. We want to pay tribute to our past experiences.  Like from our childhood, past careers or travels.  It’s easy to go overboard on collections but try to be mindful of collecting too much. We've spent too much money and feel like it's a waste if we give it away. Let's face it. We've all probably spend a good fortune on things that we never used or never really liked. Boy does that sting! Chalk it up as a lesson learn, be more frugal and research before purchasing another product and find comfort in donating your goods to folks who are less fortunate. We're holding on to the past. We tend to keep things that remind us of times when we were happy, the most confident, or the most successful. And sometimes we hold on for a deeper reason...like allowing our things to define our self-worth...or define our happiness.  Many folks believe that shopping and having more makes them happier but often times it’s just a temporary fix to “fill the void” of something else that’s missing in their lives.  Simple Steps to Help You Let Go:  Start with the space that's causing you the most grief or anxiety. This could be the home office, the kitchen, the laundry room, the bedroom etc. Then start small. Pick a small area to work on like a drawer, a shelf, a cabinet, one spot on the kitchen counter, one filing drawer.  You wouldn't eat an elephant in one sitting right?  You'd take small bites and eat a little at a time.  (Not sure I like that analogy...the thought of eating an elephant is stomach wrenching but you get the point right!) Then ask yourself these questions when deciding what to keep or not to keep: Do I love it? Do I need it? Do I use it? When was the last time I used it? When do I plan on using it? Can I borrow it? Can I rent it? What's the worst that will happen if I got rid of it? If you answered "yes" to the first three questions then you should probably keep the item. If you answered "no" then considered letting it go.  If you're still struggling then ask the other questions and you'll more than likely find your answer.
