Send us a textIn this eye-opening episode, Dr. Holly Thacker tackles the complex relationship between alcohol and health, particularly for women. Drawing from both scientific evidence and personal stories, she explains why women experience more severe effects from alcohol than men—even when drinking the same amount. The conversation goes beyond basic facts about alcoholism to explore how alcohol uniquely impacts women's bodies. Dr. Thacker reveals that women metabolize alcohol more slowly and experience more concentrated effects due to naturally lower body water content. She shares concerning observations from her own medical practice, where she's seen women develop liver and heart damage from what many would consider "moderate" drinking—just one drink per day over many years.Particularly alarming are the potential interactions between alcohol and medications. With over 150 medicines known to interact dangerously with alcohol—from common pain relievers to prescription medications—understanding these risks becomes crucial, especially for older adults who typically take multiple medications daily. For pregnant or breastfeeding women, Dr. Thacker doesn't mince words: there is no safe amount of alcohol. She shares a personal experience of how quickly even a small sip of champagne transferred to her breast milk and affected her nursing infant.Whether you're concerned about your own relationship with alcohol or worried about a loved one, this episode provides valuable insights into recognizing problematic drinking patterns, understanding treatment options, and accessing resources for help. Dr. Thacker emphasizes that alcoholism is a disease that can be treated effectively, though it requires honesty and appropriate support.Subscribe to the Speaking of Women's Health podcast for more essential health information that empowers you to be strong, be healthy, and be in charge of your wellbeing. For referral to drug and alcohol treatment programs in your area, call:Assessment Center Drug and Alcohol Abuse Hotline1.800.234.0420National Alcohol and Drug Help Line1.800.821.HELP (4357)Support the show

The roller coaster of healthy habits is exhausting. You're either completely on track with your workouts, meal prep, and sleep schedule, or you're completely off: avoiding the scale, eating whatever's easiest, and telling yourself you'll deal with it later. Most high achievers experience this pendulum swing because our brains are wired to chase immediate rewards. When work blows up or life gets messy, we default to what gives us the fastest payoff - answering emails at 10 p.m. instead of going to bed, or finishing projects instead of heading to the gym. The good news is that breaking this cycle doesn't mean preventing every slip or creating stricter rules. Tune in this week to learn why you find yourself stuck in the on-again, off-again cycle with your healthy habits, how both extremes of the pendulum offer temporary comfort but keep you stuck, and tools that will keep you from abandoning yourself. In these segments, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee tackle listener questions about erectile dysfunction (ED) following TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) procedures, as well as a range of effective treatment options. At NAU Urology Specialists, our team is highly experienced in therapies such as TriMix injections, vacuum erection devices, and inflatable penile prostheses. The vacuum erection device is a non-surgical option that uses gentle suction to create an erection, which is then maintained with a constriction ring. For patients who prefer a long-term surgical solution, the inflatable penile prosthesis is a discreet option. This silicone device is fully concealed within the body and includes a small pump placed in the scrotum, allowing men to achieve a firm, natural-looking erection when desired, and remain soft when not in use.Dr. Mistry explains that penile implants are often an excellent choice for men with severe or long-standing ED, including those with nerve damage from diabetes or other neurologic conditions. He also notes that untreated ED can lead to loss of penile length over time, while implants help preserve size and function—regardless of the underlying cause. If you or someone you love is struggling with ED, call us today at (512) 238-0762 to learn more about the latest treatment options available or visit our website www.armormenshealth.com.Voted top Men's Health Podcast, Sex Therapy Podcast, and Prostate Cancer Podcast by FeedSpot.Dr. Mistry is a board-certified urologist and has been treating patients in the Austin and Greater Williamson County area since he started his private practice, NAU Urology Specialists (now Urology Specialists of Austin), in 2007. Send us a textDr. Michael Koren joins Kevin Geddings to discuss the pivotal role imaging has played in diagnosis and understanding of various diseases. Dr. Koren notes that before the science of imaging, the only way to see what was going on inside the body was with a knife. They then discuss some of the newest applications of imaging and how the use of CT scans and amyloid PET scans can see inside the heart and arteries to see how a disease is progressing or the effectiveness of new medications. They talk about the progress that has been made and how we are able to see what's happening, but note that access to these imaging technologies is not evenly available and that sometimes cost or insurance can get in the way of healthcare access. 200 episodes ago, I had a simple dream: put life-changing information on a platform for free, and watch humanity transform. Today, that vision has created the world's leading health and wellness podcast, featuring conversations with RFK Jr. outlining his $1.9 trillion plan to end FDA corruption, Dana White sharing how his life was saved through basic keto principles and methylated vitamins, and even being invited to the White House with Max Lugavere to continue fighting for health advocacies. The movement to Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) isn't just a slogan, it's a science-backed revolution; and we, at The Ultimate Human, continue to fight for this mission! In the first segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener's question about problems with his existing penile prosthesis. This listener writes, "I had a penile implant put in several years ago and it actually made my penis smaller. When I pump it up, one of the implants in my shaft I'm concerned is going to break the skin or cause pressure problems, which are huge for me because I'm a paraplegic...Can another implant be placed and increase the size of my penis, and how can I fix the problem of too much pressure?" The penile prosthesis is an inflatable silicon device implanted internally and completely concealed. The device is inflated using a pump implanted into the scrotum which, when activated, transfers fluid from a reservoir in your abdomen into the silicon cylinders in your penis to add both length and girth to your erection. The inflated implant produces a rigid and satisfying erection, yet appears natural and soft when not in use. Dr. Mistry explains that the penile prosthesis is an excellent option for addressing a variety of patient concerns from end stage ED to nerve damage from diabetes or neurologic issues. Importantly, he points out that long-term ED actually diminishes the length of the penis over time, so the penile implant can actually help those struggling to achieve erections--no matter the reason--to maintain their size. At Urology Specialists of Austin, our surgical team can expertly place this device and help address any issues that may have arisen with older implants. In answer to this listener, Dr. Mistry says that yes, pressure ulcers can become a concern if the implant shifts and that yes, this is fixable! If you or someone you love would like to learn more about the inflatable penile prosthesis or have their prosthesis checked, please give us a call today! In the second segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee discuss the benefits of a holistic approach to urology. When patients have control over their overall health and medical treatments, they have much better health outcomes. Dr. Mistry also explains the latest in robot-guided laparoscopic surgery when relating the case of a new patient with an 8-inch kidney tumor. After another urologist told her that she would need a huge incision and lose her whole kidney, she sought a second opinion from Dr. Mistry. Fortunately, he was able to offer her the very best, state-of-the-art treatment options. Not only was she able to have the tumor removed laparoscopically while keeping part of her kidney, she had very little down-time during recovery. At Urology Specialists of Austin, we are huge fans of the second opinion. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with any kind of urologic tumor, or is interested in learning more about holistic urology, please give us a call today!Voted top Men's Health Podcast, Sex Therapy Podcast, and Prostate Cancer Podcast by FeedSpot.Dr. Mistry is a board-certified urologist and has been treating patients in the Austin and Greater Williamson County area since he started his private practice, NAU Urology Specialists (now Urology Specialists of Austin), in 2007. Data feels safe. Numbers feel concrete. When everything about your body, health, fitness, and weight loss feels unpredictable, numbers might feel like a lifeline. But here's the truth: Your Oura ring won't get you to bed earlier. Your food tracking app won't put vegetables on your plate. And your CGM won't stop you from reaching for those M&Ms. Tune in this week to learn about how you might be over-scientizing weight loss - a phenomenon I see repeatedly with clients who fill their homes with gadgets, but aren't using that information to guide or change their actions.
