Every artist has to have a vision in order to create. But those creatives who make films and movies have a special ability to see beyond the screen, to envision what the audience will eventually feel. Christina Lam is a racing driver for several series, is an instructor for Skip Barber and NASA, as well as a frequent contributor to Grass Roots Motorsports magazine. We first started following her as her “After A Crash” 9-part series started a few months back and became instant fans of her approach and her dedication to racing, education, and giving back to the racing community. On this episode, we go over how she started to be involved from a point of little knowledge and car/racing influences to where she is not only competing at national events, podiuming many times, and instructing others to improve their skills. It is a fantastic and quite rapid journey from newbie to racing veteran and her latest challenge last season will inspire you and hopefully get you to reach further towards ever higher goals. On our Dominating with Dawson, Ben goes over the difference in driving approaches for endurance racing, autocross, as well as various types of sprint racing. We hope you enjoy the episode! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team Highlights from the episode include: 1) We have had a long, long work week in the garage, so long that Vicki blanked on her name for a moment and Bill can’t spell SCCA, lol. 2) How she started off racing in Autocross one weekend and then had the opportunity of a lifetime drop in her lap a short time later (driving on a little place known as The ’Ring). 3) Christina’s first time on track was her first time driving a stick. This may be a good rival for what we ended up doing to Jennifer at her first race at Thompson Speedway. Not our best plan, but we did learn from it. 4) We share post-race hangover stories and several great ideas for further race cross training. Rally, V8 supercars, Ice racing, so much fun to be had, so little time. 5) What is involved with being a one-person team and how she accomplishes all that is required for a race weekend. The big key is prep. Second rule, prep. If you need a third rule, be prepped early. 6) We go into her accident last year and how she recovered, both physically and mentally, as well as her new race car. 7) What is involved with an SCCA protest 8) How Christina found her #46 M3 shell to start her new build 9) How much sleep she lost while working to prep for new car the upcoming 2019 national SCCA Runoffs in 60 days. 10) Christina goes into the plusses and minuses of an E46 M3 vs E46 330’s etc 11) Christina shares some of her nerves and almost PTSD after the wreck, what she had to work through and getting back into the car on track at VIR 12) What it is like being a female in a predominantly male sport at the track. 13) How Christina’s first car quickly turned into a second car. Today we have Christina Stembel, the founder and CEO of Farmgirl Flowers, joining us. After years of trying to raise capital, Christina realized that the only way she could retain the integrity of her business vision was to bootstrap the company – and it paid off in a big way. Episode #128 Summary In this episode of What The Fat, I sit down with Christina Curp, better known as Castaway Kitchen. At 29 years old and 2 years postpartum, Cristina hit rock bottom with her health. On top of an inflammatory skin condition she had lived with for years, Hidradenitis Suppurativa, she began to experience many mystery symptoms and inflammation, Cristina took to the kitchen to find wellness. Using her culinary prowess and love of research, she began to discover the connection between her symptoms and the food she ate. This ongoing experiment birthed her blog, which is a collection of inventive, allergen-friendly, low carb, whole-food recipes that have helped her reverse autoimmune disease, lose weight, and take control of her own health and well-being. The recipes were a hit on the internet and social media and The Castaway Kitchen was born! This opened doors to writing books and prompted her enrollment in the NTA program. It's been a lot of hard work, but for Christina, helping people has been worth it. Do you know someone who may be identifying as vegetarian or vegan in an attempt to further restrict food and lose weight or support their current weight suppression? In this episode, I’m talking to Christine Frangione, MS, RD, CDN, RYT, about disordered eating among vegetarians and vegans. We talk about: Christina’s personal story with being vegan and how it became disordered. Ways to identify if a person is choosing to eat a plant-based diet for moral or health reasons vs. coming from a place of restriction and disordered eating. How Christina works with her clients on plant-based eating that doesn’t fall into a trap of disordered eating. Christina’s experience as a yoga instructor and how identifying as vegetarian or vegan can send mixed messages in yoga studios. There are plenty of people who choose to avoid meat and other animal products because they don’t want to support harmful practices toward animals. Sometimes people choose this path already having a history of disordered eating. The restrictiveness of a vegetarian or vegan diet can be triggering for those with a disordered eating past. Some choose to become vegetarian or vegan in hopes that eliminating more foods from their diet will result in weight loss. In this case, identifying as vegetarian/vegan means following food rules. If you’re not driven into a vegetarian diet for moral reasons it may seem very limiting and restrictive to adhere to these rules. Listen today as Christina addresses all of these issues! Christina Frangione is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Registered Yoga Teacher with a private practice in Long Island, New York. In her practice, Christina uses a non-diet, intuitive eating approach to support individuals with eating disorders and disordered eating in developing peace with food and their bodies so that they can fully show up for what matters most in their lives. Boise Real Estate Market | Put in the Legwork By her late twenties, Christina Ward had already established herself as a premier agent in the Boise real estate market. But it was a hard fall when the great recession of 2008 hit. For all of us, the recession was a test of will—but Christina saw an opportunity to let her grit and determination to shine through. Instead of wavering in self-pity, Christina nearly broke the bank to attend a professional development seminar. She went from zero closes in five months to seven closes in one month; proof that whenever you’re feeling stuck, you can always invest in yourself! No Substitute for Grit and Determination We all know what we could be doing or should be doing to grow our businesses, but it will only make a difference if you put in the legwork. Christina has been relentless on the phones; she hired a coach and an assistant; she stayed in touch with the database to remain top of mind. By identifying a strategy and team configuration that worked for her, Christina built a powerful presence in the Boise real estate market and doubled her business in a year. Sometimes we are the only thing in our way, but there are measures you can put in place to move past that. Simple Rules As you know, we are big fans of ‘simple rules’ here at Pursuing Freedom. Christina designates what she is going to do and when she is going to do it, leaving space to ebb and flow instead of filling every hour to the brim. Unless it is an emergency, Christina doesn’t take appointments in the morning and she doesn’t do business development activities on Wednesday or Friday so she can spend time with her kids. We all got into this to attain time and financial freedom—putting a small amount of structure and discipline in place will help you maximize both, while simultaneously increasing revenue-producing activities! The age-old adage could not be more truthful: work smarter, not harder! It is the reason Christina dominates the Boise real estate market. About Christina Ward As a top producing agent in Boise, Christina has excelled in helping buyers, sellers and investors meet their goals. Christina joins the show – she is excited to report she is 30 days into her sobriety. However, she wants to know how to find the courage to ask for help and ways she can practice being more patient on the journey. When we have feelings of being a burden, there is a part of us that has low self-worth. Christina has recognized the importance of having fewer but more significant relationships. Rachel spots a thin layer of codependency and people-pleasing in Christina. Life isn’t perfect, so Christina knows she doesn’t need to be perfect. People-pleasing is exhausting, and we need to recognize that it comes from the little ones inside of us. During a time of recovery, it is essential to feel the feelings. Then, Rachel tells a story about a mom yelling at her crying child. It is healthy to cry, and everything will pass. Most people need to carve out time in their day to feel our feelings during meditation, journaling, or breathing. Even doing one of these practices for ten minutes each day will change our mindset and ultimately, our journey. Stay tuned to hear Rachel describe ways to navigate self-pity and how to tap into our feminine energy. Plus, Christina explains how she fell into addiction in the first place and the feeling of yearning for more. Since graduating from college, Christina has been a manager for the Clark County Department of Family Services, a board president for the Southern Nevada Children First organization, and is now the CEO of the St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, which works with at-risk children, youths and families. Christina Stembel entered the $3B online flower industry with no experience and very little money. With a dream to innovate on how business was done, she came up with a unique model that eventually led to Farmgirl Flowers’ $23.4M in revenue last year. Visit https://www.leadquizzes.com/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: [01:48] What gave Christina the idea of going into the flower business [03:37] Some of the things that Christina saw with the major players in the online flower market that made her think she could come in and stand out [05:56] How Christina came up with Farmgirl Flowers’ unique business model [06:49] How they tackled the problem of “waste” in the flower industry [09:27] What they did to make their bouquet pieces different from the competition [10:47] How Christina started Farmgirl Flowers with her personal savings and how she got it launched off the ground [12:49] What their first year in business looked like [14:24] How they started marketing in their first year [16:25] How they built their customer base by utilizing customer feedback [19:42] The different ways they get customer feedback [20:57] How they started doing advertising in years three and four and their strategy of pushing it through Yelp [23:30] Christina’s first hire and what she brought them in to do [26:47] Farmgirl Flowers’ supply chain, how they decided to get their sourcing, and how it evolved over time [30:39] The challenge of supporting American growers and why they eventually decided to get international sourcing [35:06] How much people cared about the idea of supporting American growers [36:38] The one thing that Christina did that had the biggest impact on Farmgirl Flowers’ growth [38:24] How Christina made sure she hired the right person. [39:05] The area that Christina personally had to grow in as a business owner to get to where she is today Key Takeaways: In previous generations, people would hide behind the fact that it’s the thought that counts, but it’s not the thought that counts with younger people. If they’re going to spend $80 to $100 of their hard-earned money on a bouquet of flowers, it better be worth that much. Flowers have a very rough perishability time period, even more so than food. If you’re in the flower business, you can’t make a mistake. You have about three days to use those flowers before you have to dump them. 79% of the people that buy flowers are women buying for women. It’s the actual marketing spend that’s going to drive your growth. If you are spending on people managing that spend, that’s money you could be actually spending on the spend. You need as much money to get in front of people as you can. Parenting books are wonderful for managing people. Action Steps: Get customer feedback and use it to make the necessary changes to create the best product offering that would allow you to meet your business goals. Find the platform that everybody else is using for advertising and put your money there. Become a good leader and manage your people well. Put a lot of emphasis on team culture early into your business. Christina said: “The industry is very old school. It’s ancient. Most of the American farmers are second or third generation and they’ve been doing things in certain ways. And getting them to break that, the system that they’ve been set up for and doing things for multiple generations is not easy.” “Every dollar that I can spend, putting it back into marketing, is what’s going to help keep fueling our growth.” More from Christina Stembel: Farmgirl Flowers’ Website Farmgirl Flowers’ Facebook Farmgirl Flowers’ Instagram (@farmgirlflowers) Christina’s LinkedIn Tools and resources mentioned in this episode: The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups by Daniel Coyle Books written by Brene Brown How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success by Julie Lythcott-Haims Sponsor link 14-day Free Trial to LeadQuizzes Thank you for listening! In my first job out of university, I was a young know-it-all graduate who suddenly had to first face down strike action by angry workers who were walking out for a pay dispute. (They stayed at work, possibly due to my winning smile). Years later, I marvelled at highly paid engineers in an oil & gas boom period slightly miffed that the free bottles of fine wine they'd been given weren't from their favourite field in France. Joining the podcast to discuss this is Dr. Christina Gardner-McCune, an Assistant Professor in the Computer & Information Science & Engineering Department in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at the University of Florida. In this episode, she expresses her thoughts on this topic and tells several stories of students who didn’t initially connect with computer science, but came to love it. Christina Lecuyer is a perfect embodiment of Carrie's mantra: You can create your own reality. In addition, her bubbly personality and confidence is downright contagious. Born in Edmonton, Christina's father, Tony Lecuyer, was one of Alberta's biggest names in golf. At age 18 Christina picked up the game quickly, and was on her way to winning tournaments and being featured on the Golf Channel's Big Break series, twice. Christina has now taken her love of helping others, dedication and determination to a new path: helping empower women to stand up and recognize their worthiness and value. She talks with Carrie about her Mastermind group, Commanding Your Worth class, and the life lessons she learned while on the golf course. What You'll Hear in This Episode: How Christina's competitive and independent nature from the early age of 4 translated to her current day endeavors. What it was like for Christina to work and live in such a male dominated world, and what she learned from the experience. Her family's background in golf, and a little more about the immense success they have all had in the sport. How Christina got into competing in tournaments, and what it felt like to get that first taste of winning. Why Christina once viewed not getting her tour card as a failure, but now sees it as the step that opened the door to her first corporate golf tournament. The limiting mindset beliefs that Christina held about being a latecomer to golf, and the way things shifted when she shed these to fully believe in herself. How Christina got picked for her “Big Break” on the Golf Channel. The life lessons Christina has learned on the golf course, and why business executives have it all right when they bond over tee time. How Christina beats overwhelm by breaking down her goals into small sizable and consistent action steps. More about Christina's Mastermind group, her Commanding your Worth class, and her vision to help women to gain confidence in all aspects of work and business. The two things Christina believes social media is good for, and why you need to turn it off and walk away if you aren't doing either! Why we must surround ourselves with good people, listen to high level information and take consistent action upon our dreams. Christina's pillars when it comes to self care and staying true to being her most healthy and authentic self. What does an artistic director do? How do they curate and plan a multifaceted event like an art fair? I had the pleasure to sit down with renowned artistic director, Christina Steinbrecher-Pfandt. In our conversation, Christia opened up about how she got started organizing art fairs, what the whole planning process looks like, what artists can expect when they get featured in an art fair, how digital images are impacting the art scene, and so much more. I can’t wait for you to get to know Christina and see things from her unique perspective as an artistic director! How it all started. Can you imagine getting the offer of a lifetime? It doesn’t happen to everyone! Christina had been enamored with art since she was a child growing up in Cologne. As an adult, she found herself working in an art gallery when she was approached by the organizers of the Moscow Art Fair, Art Moscow. They presented her with a challenging and unique opportunity to join them as the artistic director of the fair. From that point on, Christina has been honing her skills and putting in the time curating and crafting unique experiences for the public to enjoy the beauty and creativity of various art installations. A patient and long view approach. How do art fairs work? What is the process like for artistic directors like Christina? It turns out that artistic directors have to be incredibly patient and able to plan for a long-term approach to their events. It’s not just six months ahead of time or even a year, it takes several years to properly plan and execute a successful art fair! Beyond the long-term logistics, Christina also helps to facilitate an atmosphere of collaboration and networking between artists, collectors, galleries and the public. I couldn’t imagine having that enormous perspective and patience but I am thankful for dedicated and passionate directors like Christina. What artists should expect from an art fair. As an artist, what should you expect if you get to be featured at an art fair? According to Christina, one of the most important things an artist can do is to show up and be available with their artwork if possible. Not only is an art fair an opportunity to expose your art to the public, but it’s also a selling opportunity! If you get featured at a fair, do what you can to support the gallery that features you there, collectors will notice. Have you been fortunate enough to participate in an art fair during the course of your career? What tips or perspectives do you have to add? The impact of digital images on the art scene. As many of my regular followers know, I am always interested in hearing from my guests about their take on the relationship between art and the internet. While there are many helpful aspects of viewing art online, there are also many drawbacks and challenges. I was thrilled to hear Christina’s helpful and fascinating perspective on this topic. Christina takes a hopeful view of the future between art and the internet, she believes that exposure online will lead people to go and view the art they are moved by in person. I loved Christina’s view on this topic and I’m certain many of you will too! Outline of This Episode [3:20] I introduce my guest, Christina Steinbrecher-Pfandt. The Catch 22 of business growth stems from the fact that you need exposure to make it happen, yet it’s tough to afford a PR professional until your business has grown to a certain level. Is there a way to do it yourself? What is the best approach for pitching yourself to local or even national media outlets? Christina Nicholson spent ten years as a news anchor and reporter, and in that time she received an overwhelming number of pitches from publicists looking to earn exposure for their clients – who were approaching it the wrong way. She transitioned to the field of media relations in 2015, hoping that a traditional work schedule would be more family-friendly, but she quickly grew weary of the pressure to be in the office late and answer email at all hours. Christina created her own public relations firm in 2015. Media Maven seeks to help small business owners gain exposure via media relations, video production, writing, and blogging. She employs the lessons she learned in broadcasting to land her clients coverage on The Rachel Ray Show as well as local TV in a variety of top ten markets, and in print and digital publications including Newborn Magazine and countless websites and blogs.
