In this episode, Elizabeth Mintun is joined by Carley Weissert, a self-love and body image coach for women, who helps her clients create peace with their bodies, find freedom with food, and dismantle the rules and beliefs that keep them stuck in cycles of shame, perfectionism, and restriction.Carley shares her own transformational journey, from years of disordered eating and self-criticism to hitting her rock bottom. Through candid storytelling, she walks us through the moment she got “sick of herself” and how working with a coach opened the door to body peace and self-trust. Carley's honesty, warmth, and lived experience make this episode a must-listen for anyone who's ever struggled with their relationship to food, their body, or the internalized need to be "perfect."Key TakeawaysInner-child and - especially - inner teen work can uncover hidden beliefs that could be significantly contributing to body image issues. Self-compassion, including common humanity (the idea that we're not alone) is a key component of healing body image struggles. Shame keeps us silent, and bringing our shame into the light is one of the first steps to healing.

Welcome to today's episode, where we're diving into something we all wrestle with—imperfection. Here's the truth: it's perfectly okay to be imperfect—perfectly imperfect, in fact! There's such freedom in that phrase. While we absolutely aim to show up prepared, polished, and doing our best, life has a way of tossing in surprises, missteps, and messy moments. And guess what? That's not failure—it's just real life. No matter how many planners you buy or how many inspirational quotes you tape to your mirror, something's always just slightly off—and that's okay. So today, let's laugh a little, learn a lot, and celebrate the freedom that comes with embracing the messy middle. She highlighted how social media often presents a curated, perfect image, which can be misleading and unrealistic. Deborah emphasized that it's okay to be imperfect and that imperfections can tell a story, as seen in the unique characteristics of opals and salt and pepper diamonds. She also shared personal experiences and referenced famous individuals like Marilyn Monroe, who embraced their imperfections. Deborah encouraged listeners to let go of the illusion of having it all together and to focus on wholeness and authenticity, rather than constant performance. She concluded by urging listeners to embrace their unique beauty and to take their next chapter of life seriously.

It would take an entire section of show notes here to list all the things Felicia Day has accomplished in her career. Here's an attempt at making that brief: acted in a bunch of TV shows you know, created and starred in web series, made just so very many online videos, and is now the author and star of an audiobook called Third Eye about someone who is supposed to save the world but fails. In our interview, Felicia talks about doing all those things while dealing with mental disorders like depression and anxiety as well as mental health phenomena like perfectionism and impostor syndrome. We hear about her life as a 20-year-old college graduate/violin prodigy/mathematician trying to make it in Hollywood, about hitting a burnout wall, and about how covid and parenthood slowed her life down.Join Felicia's streams on Twitch by following her at www.twitch.tv/feliciaday.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. In this heartfelt and honest episode, Giana opens up about her long-time relationship with perfectionism—how it quietly shaped her path, fueled impostor syndrome, and kept her playing small. We explore the sneaky ways perfectionism shows up in teaching yoga, and especially on social media, where carefully curated feeds can end up hiding who we really are.We talk about how striving to appear flawless can hold us back from taking risks, speaking our truth, and feeling like we truly belong in the spaces we've worked so hard to enter. That lingering sense of “never being enough”? Yep, we go there. And we talk about how embracing your full, messy, brilliant self can change everything. Authenticity creates connection. Vulnerability opens doors. This episode is your reminder that your presence doesn't have to be perfect to be powerful. Bring the mess. Bring the magic. There's space for you, just as you are. Also, there may or may not be a tangent about editing podcast episodes, faking it till you make it, and the stereotypical yogi facade. Perfectionism is something many people strive to achieve. It can drive high standards and motivation. But according to Dr. Greg Chasson, perfectionism does not necessarily equate to excellence. He contends that those who establish such a high standard of rigid ideals for themselves often become paralyzed because they're afraid that they will make mistakes or fail to meet expectations. He offers practical strategies to manage perfectionism. Dr. Chasson is a licensed clinical psychologist, board-certified cognitive-behavioral therapist, and the director of Behavioral Interventions of the Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago. Over the past two decades, Dr. Chasson has provided cognitive-behavioral therapy for clinically severe perfectionism He has authored or co-authored more than 70 scientific publications and is the author of the book, Flawed: Why Perfectionism is a Challenge for Management.

In this episode, I help leadership coach and podcaster Julie Neale work through the discomfort she feels on stage.Though she's right at home behind the microphone, being on stage stirs up something different. Julie may look confident, but inside, she's anxious — silently struggling.Together, we trace her nerves back to early experiences that shaped her identity, including a pivotal moment when her father, with the best intentions, publicly praised her in a way that became a role she felt expected to play — even at the expense of her own truth. We also talk about how to feel more grounded, expand your stage presence, and create a sense of belonging in front of an audience. If you've ever felt unseen, misrepresented, or not fully yourself in the spotlight, this conversation will speak to you.Click here to check the full show notes.

ABOUT THE EPISODE:We're back with another episode of the ‘Cathy & Brenda Show', and this week we tackle a topic we see recurring in our community and the parents we work with…achievement-oriented parenting. As two recovering perfectionists ourselves, Cathy and I both share examples of what it looks like to be achievement-focused when your child (or children) struggle with substances and mental health. We talk about the tendency some of us have to want everything on the outside to look a certain way, even when that's doing damage to our kids, and how it can feel scary to apply self-compassion in fear of getting ‘weak' or ‘soft.'We discuss the internal battles many of us face about wishing our kids would just “get it together” and how the Invitation To Change approach can help us instead look at them with compassionate curiosity to understand their behavior instead of punishing it. We also tap into two of our favorite authors and researchers, Dr. Kristin Neff and Jessica Lahey. If you identify as a problem solver, list-checker, task doer, results-focused person…this is your episode. We even go on a tangent or two, but promise you'll be able to relate.EPISODE RESOURCES:Dr.Kristin Neff's websiteJessica Lahey's website and Hopestream podcast episode #163This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereFind us on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Shame and stigma are used to keep us in line and keep us quiet. Some of it is quite obvious, while other parts of the shame and stigma are more subtle and a little harder to recognise. From girlhood, we are taught that we should look and feel a certain way. The expectations of motherhood, our careers, our bodies, whether or not we should choose marriage are all laced with taboos. Today’s guest is Dr Jessica Zucker. Jessica is a clinical psychologist with a PhD who specialises in reproductive health and the author of the award-winning book I HAD A MISCARRIAGE: A Memoir, a Movement. Today we are going to unpack some of the concepts of her second book titled Normalize it: Upending the Silence, Stigma and Shame That Shape Women’s Lives. We speak about: Jessica’s own miscarriage and how women tend to blame themselves when they experience miscarriage Being told to keep pregnancy a secret until 2nd trimester & how it can leave women feeling unsupported The trifecta of silence, shame and stigma and how they all feed each other “At least” comments and how they try to ‘tidy up’ pain Objectification theory Navigating diet culture and health messaging with our kids The language we use when it comes to health and conditions like cancer of ‘beating it,’ ‘be strong’ and ‘fighting’ Perfectionism and it’s link to anxiety The narratives of what we ‘should’ want to be like married and mothers You can get a copy of Dr Jessica Zucker’s new book here: Amazon Find her on Instagram: @ihadamiscarriage And more from her website: drjessicazucker.com You can watch us on Youtube Find us on Instagram Join us on tiktok Or join the Facebook Discussion Group Tell your mum, tell your dad, tell your dog, tell your friend and share the love because WE LOVE LOVE! Depression isn't a flaw to fix but a signal worth paying attention to, especially for performers who build their identity around applause. John Corella welcomes Nathaniel Flatt, a licensed therapist, former professional dancer, and one-time boy band member, for a conversation that pulls back the curtain on mental health in the arts. What happens when the dream gig doesn't fulfill you? Or when rejection keeps showing up and starts to feel personal? Nathaniel shares how he went from dancing with Beyoncé at the Oscars to sitting on a therapist's couch, questioning what came next and why it didn't feel like enough. They talk about the emotional weight performers carry, the difference between sadness and depression, and what it really means to celebrate depression instead of fearing it. Nathaniel explains how therapy became a creative and collaborative practice for him, and why our culture's obsession with winning often leaves people feeling more lost than ever. This episode is for anyone who's ever felt like their worth depends on a callback, a competition result, or someone else's approval. Do you struggle with being a perfectionist in your parenting or life in general? If you answer yes, then you are definitely not alone. I support so many parents who struggle with perfectionism and perfectionism doesn't blend well with the messiness that is sleep and development. In this episode I'm joined by Jillian Scott, a trauma informed health and wellness coach to talk about perfectionism. We talk about the ways perfectionism shows up in parenting, and how its roots are often from our own childhoods. Jillian shares how perfectionism and people pleasing can often go together. We discuss how parents have a powerful opportunity to notice perfectionist tendencies and reflect on them so that we can shift the patterns we are modeling for our children. We talk through common situations that many parents navigate, and how working through that perfectionist tendency can look. I hope this episode gives you some insight and things to consider as you work through your own perfectionist tendencies for yourself and for your littles. If perfectionism is your favorite weakness, this one's for you. Dr. Ellen Hendriksen, clinical psychologist and author of How to Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists, joins Vic to unpack the roots of perfectionism, how it shows up in everyday life, and why so many of us feel like we have to earn our worth. They explore the difference between healthy ambition and toxic self-criticism, how to find that middle ground where you're still growing without burning out, and what it really means to practice self-compassion. Vic opens up about her own struggles with perfectionism—from how playing D1 volleyball enhanced her inner critic to why she regrets overplanning Max's 30th birthday—and shares the tools she's learning to prioritize presence over performance. Whether you overthink, overachieve, or feel like you're never quite doing enough, this conversation will help you let go of the pressure and embrace the messiness of being human.Website: ellenhendriksen.comInstagram: @ellen_hendriksenBook: How to Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists by Dr. Ellen Hendriksen// SPONSORS // Quince: Treat your closet to a little summer glow-up with Quince. Do you feel like your urges seem to have a mind of their own? Those compelling impulses to check your phone, eat something sweet, or pour another glass of wine often feel like unwelcome intruders in our carefully planned lives. However, urges aren't problems to fix—they're messengers trying to communicate something important. I'll share a powerful metaphor that changed how I understand urges, along with practical prompts to help you decode what your urges are really trying to tell you. By approaching these impulses with curiosity instead of judgment, you can transform your relationship with them and access deeper self-knowledge. When you understand what drives your urges, you gain the freedom to choose how you respond to them. Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: https://habitsonpurpose.com/171

Episode Summary: Feeling stuck? You are so not alone. In this episode, I'm diving into one of the biggest roadblocks I see actors (and creatives of all kinds) face: procrastination. I'm breaking down my signature framework—the **3 P's: Perfectionism, Procrastination, and Paralysis—**and showing you how procrastination is often just fear wearing a clever disguise. I'll help you reframe your stuck-ness, understand what's really going on underneath the delay, and—most importantly—take messy, imperfect, courageous action. And yes, I'm also sharing how the energy behind procrastination doesn't just slow you down…it actually blocks your creativity, your confidence, and even your opportunities. Whether you're stuck in your acting career, your voiceover hustle, or anywhere in life where you're overthinking and under-doing—this episode is here to help you shift into action mode. What I cover in this episode: How perfectionism leads to procrastination…and then straight into paralysis. Why procrastination is really fear in disguise (and how to spot it). Fear of failure vs. fear of success—what's really holding you back. Why you don't need to feel ready (you just need to act). How procrastination sends out the wrong energetic signal to the universe. The simple truth: Clarity comes from commitment, not contemplation. My Favorite Quotes from this Episode: "Procrastination is fear in disguise." "Your desire for your dream needs to be bigger than your fear." "You can act your way into right thinking." This week on Surviving Roots, I'm joined by the one and only Valeria Lipovetsky—a content creator, entrepreneur, podcast host, and mother of three whose grace and grit have built more than just a brand—they've sparked a movement. In this deeply honest conversation, Valeria and I talk about what it means to mother ourselves while mothering others, the silent pressure of perfectionism, and the generational healing it takes to raise kids differently than we were raised. We explore cultural legacies, family dynamics, reconnecting with biological roots, and the emotional journey of writing your truth. This episode is for anyone unpacking their upbringing, redefining strength, and learning to feel joy again.
In this short podcast, Bryan talks about how to deal with too much at work and in life. He gives some practical tips to help you when you feel overwhelmed. One of the best ways to get ahead is to wake up early, exercise, get sunlight, stay hydrated, eat healthy, and get enough sleep. Taking care of yourself and giving yourself ample opportunities to set your mind and body up for success can ensure that you have the energy to tackle the challenges at work and in other areas of your life. When you're in the middle of an overwhelming mix of tasks, it helps to take a small break and take some deep breaths. Some people take smoke breaks. Once you have an opportunity to step back and clear your head, try to document all of the things you need to do. You can use a Google Doc with the help of ChatGPT to lay everything out. Once you have all of your tasks in front of you, pick 3-5 things that must get done today and then use your calendar, silence your notifications, and use all the tools at your disposal to focus on those things. Perfectionism and people-pleasing can also get in the way of achieving all of your tasks. You have to be able to accept work that isn't perfect and say no to meetings or unnecessary tasks. You can use tools like Loom to document quick notes instead of holding a meeting. When you can't avoid meetings, try to batch them all at once. Batching, delegating, and automating tasks also come in handy, especially before tasks pile up and spiral out of control. Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Perfectionism promises success but quietly steals progress, joy, and the chance to create the life you're meant to live. Corinne Morahan pulls back the curtain on how perfectionism creeps in, stalls your momentum, and dims your impact before you even realize it. She shares how her own identity as a proud perfectionist kept her stuck until she saw how much it was costing her as an entrepreneur. Is the constant pressure to “have it all together” helping you, or holding you back from the success you want? In this episode, Corinne draws a clear line between having high standards and chasing perfection. She explains why the pursuit of perfection often leads to procrastination, missed opportunities, and a cycle of self-criticism that stops real growth. What could happen if you moved forward before you felt ready? Corinne offers a roadmap for breaking the perfectionist cycle. From setting limits on revisions to reframing mistakes as powerful feedback, she shares tools that help you build momentum instead of getting trapped in endless overthinking. If you have ever found yourself paralyzed by the need to get it exactly right, this episode invites you to rethink what real success looks like and reminds you that progress, not perfection, is where the real magic happens. If we want to increase the intimacy and connection in our relationships, it is imperative that we show up as a safe person who creates a safe space. Often, the patterns we have established in our relationships are the opposite of safe, they cause our primitive brains to go into hyper protective mode and want to run away emotionally and physically. But when we can learn to show up safe, time and time again, we can create a space where our spouse may be willing to start engaging in vulnerability, in the openness and honesty necessary to deepen our engagement. Financial literacy can prevent future hardships in case of unexpected events. Women often feel guilty about spending money on themselves. Selfishness in financial decisions can be redefined as self-care. Finding personal hobbies is essential for mental well-being. Aging can bring a sense of freedom and acceptance.
