Michael #1: Mozilla's Lifeline is Safe After Judge's Google Antitrust Ruling A judge lets Google keep paying Mozilla to make Google the default search engine but only if those deals aren't exclusive. More than 85% of Mozilla's revenue comes from Google search payments. The ruling forbids Google from making exclusive contracts for Search, Chrome, Google Assistant, or Gemini, and forces data sharing and search syndication so rivals get a fighting chance. Brian #2: troml - suggests or fills in trove classifiers for your projects Adam Hill This is super cool and so welcome. Trove Classifiers are things like Programming Language :: Python :: 3.14 that allow for some fun stuff to show up in PyPI, like the versions you support, etc. Note that just saying you require 3.9+ doesn't tell the user that you've actually tested stuff on 3.14. I like to keep Trove Classifiers around for this reason. Also, License classifier is deprecated, and if you include it, it shows up in two places, in Meta, and in the Classifiers section. Probably good to only have one place. So I'm going to be removing it from classifiers for my projects. One problem, classifier text has to be an exact match to something in the classifier list, so we usually recommend copy/pasting from that list. But no longer! Just use troml! It just fills it in for you (if you run troml suggest --fix). How totally awesome is that! I tried it on pytest-check, and it was mostly right. It suggested me adding 3.15, which I haven't tested yet, so I'm not ready to add that just yet. :) BTW, I talked with Brett Cannon about classifiers back in ‘23 if you want some more in depth info on trove classifiers. Michael #3: pqrs: Command line tool for inspecting Parquet files pqrs is a command line tool for inspecting Parquet files This is a replacement for the parquet-tools utility written in Rust Built using the Rust implementation of Parquet and Arrow pqrs roughly means "parquet-tools in rust" Why Parquet? Size A 200 MB CSV will usually shrink to somewhere between about 20-100 MB as Parquet depending on the data and compression. Loading a Parquet file is typically several times faster than parsing CSV, often 2x-10x faster for a full-file load and much faster when you only read some columns. Speed Full-file load into pandas: Parquet with pyarrow/fastparquet is usually 2x–10x faster than reading CSV with pandas because CSV parsing is CPU intensive (text tokenizing, dtype inference). Example: if read_csv is 10 seconds, read_parquet might be ~1–5 seconds depending on CPU and codec. Column subset: Parquet is much faster if you only need some columns — often 5x–50x faster because it reads only those column chunks. Predicate pushdown & row groups: When using dataset APIs (pyarrow.dataset) you can push filters to skip row groups, reducing I/O dramatically for selective queries. Memory usage: Parquet avoids temporary string buffers and repeated parsing, so peak memory and temporary allocations are often lower. En este episodio especial de La Teoría de la Mente, nos ponemos el espejo delante para hablar de algo necesario: la autocrítica en psicología clínica. Porque sí, los psicólogos también se equivocan, y hoy hacemos un ejercicio honesto para nombrar y reflexionar sobre algunos de los errores más comunes en nuestra práctica profesional. Desde menospreciar los síntomas del paciente, pasando por la obsesión con el trauma, el uso excesivo de técnicas, hasta llegar a esa necesidad narcisista de creernos salvadores, nos adentramos en una mirada crítica pero constructiva hacia el ejercicio clínico. Este episodio no es un manual, ni una guía definitiva. Es más bien una desiderata, una lista de cosas que queremos observar con más conciencia, aunque sigamos equivocándonos en el camino. Porque de eso también va la terapia: de reconocer la sombra sin necesidad de eliminarla, de acompañar sin pretender salvar. Reflexionamos sobre la importancia de: Escuchar y dar espacio real a los síntomas, que a menudo son el centro del malestar del paciente. Evitar simplificar todo a un trauma oculto y mágico que lo explique todo. Entender que las técnicas no salvan, sino que ayudan si se aplican con sentido y contexto. Cuestionar nuestras propias fantasías como terapeutas y los modelos que intentamos imponer. Abandonar el rol de “gurú” para convertirnos en guías humanos, falibles, acompañantes del dolor del otro. Poner en el centro la relación terapéutica, como base de cualquier proceso de transformación emocional. Este episodio no solo es una invitación a la reflexión, sino también una herramienta para repensar cómo estamos acompañando a quienes vienen a consulta. Porque la psicología no es una fórmula perfecta, es una relación imperfecta entre dos personas que se atreven a mirar el sufrimiento de frente. Si eres psicólogo/a, terapeuta, estudiante de psicología o simplemente te interesa el mundo de la salud mental desde un lugar humano y realista, este episodio es para ti. El pasado jueves Charlie Kirk, una figura prominente del conservadurismo estadounidense, fue asesinado de un disparo en el cuello durante un acto en la Universidad del Valle de Utah. Kirk, muy conocido en EEUU y en el Reino Unido, fundó en 2012, con solo 18 años, Turning Point USA, una organización que promueve ideas conservadoras en los campus universitarios. Este proyecto, inspirado por Bill Montgomery, un activista del Tea Party, ha seguido creciendo y hoy emplea a 500 personas y genera más de 80 millones de dólares anuales en ingresos. Turning Point está presente en unos 800 campus, donde organiza distintas actividades, pero los protagonizados por Kirk eran los más esperados y los que mayor audiencia concitaban. Con un cartel que decía “prove me wrong” (demuestra que estoy equivocado), Kirk desafiaba a estudiantes a debatir temas polémicos como el aborto o los derechos trans. Eso propulsó su fama y, especialmente en redes sociales, era una celebridad absoluta. Su programa de radio online The Charlie Kirk Show lo seguían millones de personas y su presencia era muy demandada. Nació en Prospect Heights, cerca de Chicago, en una familia de clase media. Nada más empezar la carrera abandonó sus estudios universitarios para dedicarse al activismo impulsado por donantes como Foster Friess, lo que le llevó a mudarse a Phoenix, en Arizona. Allí se casó con Erika, antigua reina de la belleza del Estado, con quien ha tenido dos hijos. Su estilo de debate, educado pero firme, le permitió destacar tanto frente a estudiantes como en discusiones con oponentes más preparados. Sus posturas, alineadas con el republicanismo actual, incidían en la oposición al aborto, al matrimonio gay, a la inmigración y al “transgenerismo”. En temas internacionales, se inclinaba por Israel y era más prorruso que proucraniano, aunque esto no le preocupaban tanto como los asuntos de índole social. Turning Point UK, una filial británica creada junto a la activista conservadora Candace Owens, consolidó su fama en el Reino Unido. Este año Kirk se había preparado para continuar con su gira American Comeback que comenzó el año pasado y que consistía en debatir con estudiantes en varias universidades. La primera de ellas era la del Valle de Utah el 10 de septiembre, pero fue asesinado por Tyler Robinson, un joven de 22 años de una familia mormona que se radicalizó a lo largo del último año. El asesinato de Kirk no es un evento excepcional. La violencia política en EEUU ha resurgido con fuerza. Tenemos ejemplos recientes como el asesinato de la representante de Minnesota Melissa Hortman, el intento de asesinato del gobernador de Pensilvania, Josh Shapiro, el homicidio del ejecutivo Brian Thompson y dos atentados contra Donald Trump. El asalto al Capitolio en 2021 forma parte de esta ola de violencia. La polarización, alimentada por figuras divisivas y extremistas, ha creado un clima donde los oponentes políticos son vistos como enemigos a eliminar. Kirk, aunque polémico por sus opiniones, nunca promovió la violencia, y su muerte plantea preguntas sobre la libertad de expresión y la escalada de la radicalización. La democracia, un buen mecanismo para gestionar conflictos, se ve amenazada cuando se recurre a la mentira o la exageración, como, por ejemplo, acusar de fascismo a cualquiera, a la difusión de teorías conspirativas o a alentar a la violencia contra el adversario.
