As recently as 1928, a vast swathe of Asia—India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal, Bhutan, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait—were bound together under a single imperial banner, an entity known officially as the “Indian Empire,” or more simply as the British Raj. And then, in just fifty years, the Indian Empire shattered. Five partitions tore it apart, carving out new nations, redrawing maps, and leaving behind a legacy of war, exile and division.A new book the author Sam Dalrymple, Shattered Lands: Five Partitions and the Making of Modern Asia, presents the unknown back story of how the Indian Empire was unmade. Sam is a historian and award-winning filmmaker who grew up in Delhi. He graduated from Oxford University as a Persian and Sanskrit scholar. In 2018, he co-founded Project Dastaan, a peace-building initiative that reconnects refugees displaced by the 1947 Partition of India. His debut film, Child of Empire, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022, and he runs the history Substack @ travelsofsamwise. To talk more about his new book, Sam joins Milan on the podcast this week. Plus, the two talk about the creation of Pakistan, the twin genocides of 1971, and the special resonance of the princely state of Junagadh in modern-day Gujarat.Episode notes:1. The Thought Leader Revolution Podcast | 10X Your Impact, Your Income & Your Influence
"It's a story about patterns, the ones that shape us, trap us, and sometimes, if we're lucky, set us free." Power and transformation begin where truth meets courage. This conversation reveals how the human potential movement emerged from the radical optimism of the 1970s and reshaped into today's $48-billion self-help industry. At its core is the tension between enlightenment and ego — how the same tools that awaken millions can also entrap them if they surrender their inner wisdom to authority. The principles at play are timeless: responsibility, authenticity, and the danger of confusing charisma with truth. From her front-row seat at the birth of EST, Marcia Martin exposes both the miracles and the madness behind the movement that promised human liberation. She shares what it was like to be a powerful woman in a man's world — creating mass transformation while learning hard lessons about influence, control, and integrity. Her reflections carry a rare honesty and hard-earned compassion that illuminate the shadow side of success. Marcia is a legendary thought leader, executive coach, and founding architect of the modern self-help industry. She helped launch Werner Erhard's EST (Erhard Seminar Training), ran Tony Robbins' organization in its early years, co-created the Transformational Leadership Council with Jack Canfield, and has guided hundreds of thousands through transformational leadership worldwide. Expert action steps: Center before you act — Be fully present. When you engage with others, bring yourself into the moment rather than being distracted by thoughts about the past or future. Listen generously — Listen before you speak. Assume the person you're hearing is brilliant and that what they're saying is valuable. This creates connection and dissolves tension in the space. Speak from authenticity — Communicate from your heart and direct experience, not from beliefs or rehearsed thoughts. Speak truthfully and vulnerably. The Roman emperor Julian (r. 361-363 CE) was a man of action and of letters, which he employed in an effort to return the Empire to the light of the pagan gods, and reverse the Christianization of the empire advanced by his uncle Constantine and the sons of Constantine. This enterprise was inspired and guided by his conversion to the Neoplatonic philosophy and radical pagan Hellenism of Iamblichus and his disciples, and promoted by his production of Greek orations, letters, and satires. These works present a coherent vision of the providentially guided history and destiny of Rome as a series of foundations and refoundations enacted by rulers such as Romulus, Numa, and Caesar Augustus. As this book demonstrates, Julian offers an Iamblichean approach to the exegesis of the legends of Rome's founding, the allegories of Plato's dialogues, and myths of his own creation in order to articulate his own role in the refounding of the Empire. Furthermore, argues Jeremy Swist, approaching the wider examination of Julian's imperial self-image on these terms ends up nuancing and challenging common assumptions influenced by the rhetoric of his contemporary proponents. In his reverence for the gods and for philosophy, the emperor's self-construction embraces the identities of a statesman and soldier more than of a philosopher, of a Roman more than a Greek, and of a mere human rather than a semi-divine being. While distancing himself from the ideal models of philosophical virtue and imperial founding that inspire his own actions, he adopts a different set of exemplary figures as mirrors of himself. Pastor Michael continues our sermon series by looking at the letter to the church in Thyatira and both problematizing the imagery of Jezebel and also calling us to reject the shaming and labeling practices of Empire. How might we continue to hold on to the promise of Jesus, who will make things right, even in the midst of our violent and divided world?

He was a native of Thessalonica, born of noble parents. His wisdom and distinction in battle earned him rapid advancement in the service of the Empire: in time he was appointed commander of all the Roman forces in Thessaly, and Proconsul of Hellas. Despite these worldly honors, Demetrius put his Christian faith before all, and by his words and example brought many pagans to faith in Christ. When the Emperor Maximian, a persecutor of Christians, came to Thessalonica he appointed games and public sacrifices to celebrate his recent victory over the Scythians. Some jealous pagans used the visit to denounce Demetrius to the Emperor. Maximian had Demetrius cast into a fetid cell in the basement of some nearby baths. Maximian had brought with him a huge barbarian of tremendous strength named Lyaios, who fought many men in the arena and defeated them all, to the entertainment of the Emperor and the crowds. A young Christian named Nestor determined to show the people that the only true strength is in Christ: he visited Demetrius in his cell and asked for his blessing to challenge Lyaios to combat. The Martyr made the sign of the Cross over Nestor and sent him to the arena with his blessing. Nestor, a young boy, cried out before the Emperor 'God of Demetrius, help me!' and quickly killed the mighty Lyaios, to the astonishment of the crowd. The infuriated Emperor had Nestor slain with his own sword, and sent soldiers to Demetrius' cell, where they killed him with their spears. Demetrius' servant, a believer named Lupus, retrieved the body of Demetrius and buried it with honor. He kept the Saint's ring and blood-stained tunic, and through them worked several miracles and healings. When the Emperor heard of this, he had Lupus, too, beheaded. As a sign of the grace that rested on the holy Demetrius, a fragrant myrrh flowed copiously from the Martyr's body after his death, healing many of the sick. For many centuries, St Demetrius has been a patron Saint of Thessalonica.
Today I talk with Professor Nisrin Elamin about the situation in Sudan, where we find both a war between rival factions and these same factions continuing counter-revolutionary campaign against pro-democracy forces. We discuss how regional actors such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have contributed to the repression of democracy, and not only the ineffectiveness of NGOs and the United Nations in quelling the violence, but their roles in exacerbating it. In the midst of forced famine and war, we find the remarkable and heroic efforts of mutual aid groups and resistance organizations in civil society that have made life possible. Elamin explains how this ethos of obligation reaches far back in Sudanese history and culture. We end by talking about the Sudanese Solidarity Collective, a group that Nisrin helped found, which provides a vital conduit of aid to Sudan from its diasporic communities and others.Nisrin Elamin is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and African Studies at the University of Toronto. She is currently writing a book tentatively titled: Stratified Enclosures: Land, Capital and Empire-making in Central Sudan which focuses on Saudi and Emirati investments in land and community resistance to land dispossession in the agricultural Gezira region. In addition to scholarly articles, Nisrin has published and co-written several op-eds for Al Jazeera, The Washington Post, Okay Africa, Hammer and Hope and The Egypt Independent. Before pursuing her Ph.D., Nisrin spent over a decade working as an educator, organizer and researcher in the US and Tanzania. She is also a co-founding member of the Sudan Solidarity Collective which formed in the aftermath of the current war to support local emergency response rooms (ERRs) and other mutual aid networks and unions leading relief efforts in the face of a largely absent international aid community and civilian state.

Shannon Rowan discusses her fascinating book "The Red Shoes: Our Devil's Dance with Technology and How We Can Stop It" on whether digital technologies have crossed the Rubicon from being mere tools to becoming our masters and whether they may even inherently be evil. From the harms of EMF and EMR, to the effects of screen technology on children and adult internet addiction, the internet is wrecking havoc on society. She also looks at some of the mysterious DARPA origins of this technology and little known facts, such as how the CIA's MKULTRA predecessor was known as Project Bluebird, and isn't it interesting how Twitter's initial logo was a bluebird? And although it has delivered blows to Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas on the ground, it's losing another fight: the information war, a campaign of slander and blood libels fueled by a media empire built by the Muslim Brotherhood. To expose where — from Al Jazeera's studios in Doha to Turkish satellite channels and newsrooms in London — and how this empire works — amplifying Hamas, laundering Islamist ideology through “journalism,” and reshaping the narrative from Cairo to Washington — host Cliff May is joined by FDD's Mariam Wahba. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: The latest controversy to blowup about the Alamo should be in reverse. It's not that the Lt. Gov. called on the head of the Alamo Trust to resign and that she is now gone, as the press wants to present it. The controversy, in a sane world, is that we continue to have people in positions of power and trust who want to rewrite Texas History to fit a leftwing inaccurate template and wish to present the Alamo to people as something other than what it is and why they go there: A shrine to Texas Liberty and the Texas Revolution.Reminder, people don't visit Pearl Harbor to study the diaspora of the Polynesian peoples across the Pacific islands, they go to remember the attack on the USA by the Empire of Japan on 7 December 1941. It is the same at the Alamo. It's clear that tech billionaires want AI to be the next tech revolution to change society. How it's being developed and used raises serious questions and concerns around the impact on trans people, especially given the key companies developing these products have very close ties to the Trump administration. First, Imara speaks with Karen Hao, a journalist and bestselling author of Empire of AI, a sweeping investigation into the rise of OpenAI and the global power dynamics of machine intelligence. Then, she chats with Eddie Ungless, a recent Phd graduate in Natural Language Processing, about what it might take to make these technologies safer and more accountable.
