In the 1950s, a German drug company developed a new sedative that was supposed to be 100% safe: thalidomide. So safe, in fact, it was promoted to women as a treatment for morning sickness. It quickly became a bestseller. But in the early 1960s, shocking news started coming out of Europe. Thousands of babies were being born with shortened arms and legs, heart defects, and other serious problems. Many died. In the United States things were different, thanks to one principled, strong-minded skeptic who joined the Federal Drug Administration in 1960 as a medical reviewer. One of her first assignments was to review the approval application of that very wonder drug, thalidomide. But the application was, to her mind, flawed. Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey was a physician, a pharmacologist, and a nitpicker who refused to be intimidated by big pharma. Starting in September, a new five-part series from Lost Women of Science: The Devil in the Details, the story of Frances Oldham Kelsey, The Doctor Who Said No To Thalidomide.

A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - The first hearing in what could be the most consequential abortion case since the overturning of Roe v. Wade is set for this Wednesday, March 15. The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine (AHM), along with several other medical organizations and doctors, is suing the Federal Drug Administration for its approval and expansion of the abortion drug mifepristone. On January 3, the FDA changed its policy to allow pharmacies, such as CVS and Walgreens, to sell mifepristone. Previously, the FDA only allowed certified doctors, clinics, and some mail-order pharmacies to dispense the drug. After the FDA's policy change, any patient with a prescription can obtain mifepristone from her local retail pharmacy. Represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), AHM is alleging that the FDA has been recklessly endangering women and young girls for decades by ignoring its own research and testing standards and continuing to expand its mifepristone approval. The case is being heard by U.S. Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk for the Northern District of Texas. A high-stakes case, if Kacsmaryk rules against the FDA, the administration could be forced to rescind its approval of the drug, bringing its legal distribution to a halt across the country, even in states where abortion remains legal. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253858/case-that-could-stop-half-of-us-abortions-set-for-this-wednesday Police are searching for a man who burglarized and vandalized Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Gales Ferry, Connecticut, early Saturday. The Ledyard Police Department reported that the man broke into the church, smashing windows and attempting to break into rooms using a crowbar. The police reported that the man further vandalized the church by painting “hateful” messages on the floor of the church meeting hall with black paint and more “hateful speech” on a wall that displayed a large crucifix. Based on security camera footage from inside the church, police allege the man entered the building at about 1 am Saturday, March 11, and stayed in the building for about two and a half hours. The police believe the man first tried to enter the building by throwing bricks at the front door but was unsuccessful. The police believe the man then walked around the outside of the building and broke windows with bricks, rocks, and religious items before breaking into a window on the north side of the building and entering the church. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253854/police-looking-for-man-who-vandalized-connecticut-catholic-church Today, the Church celebrates Saint Matilda, Queen of Germany and wife of King Henry I was the daughter of Count Dietrich of Westphalia and Reinhild of Denmark. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-matilda-177

A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - This week a federal Texas judge could stop over half of the abortions happening in the country in what may be the most consequential abortion ruling since the reversal of Roe v Wade. US Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk for the Northern District of Texas is set to issue a decision in the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine's (AHM) suit against the Federal Drug Administration that alleges the agency ignored its own research and testing standards when approving the abortion drug mifepristone. Mifepristone is the first of two drugs used in chemical abortions, which account for 53% of all abortions in the country. If Kacsmaryk rules against the FDA, the administration could be forced to rescind its approval of the drug, bringing its legal distribution to a halt across the country, even in states where abortion remains legal. Though a ruling against the FDA could block the legal distribution of mifepristone, that result might only be temporary. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253763/here-s-how-half-of-us-abortions-could-be-stopped-this-week The Nicaraguan dictatorship led by Daniel Ortega has prohibited holding the Stations of the Cross in the streets the same week that the dictator accused the Church of being a “mafia.” Local media reported February 23 and 24 that the government had banned the Stations of the Cross, a traditional practice during Lent and Holy Week. Hundreds of faithful participated in the Stations of the Cross that took place around the Managua Cathedral on Friday, February 24. Ortega's government has in recent years detained, imprisoned, and likely tortured numerous Catholic leaders, including at least one bishop and several priests. His government has also taken action to repress Catholic radio and television stations, and driven Catholic religious orders, including the Missionaries of Charity, from the country. The regime also expelled Archbishop Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag, the former apostolic nuncio in Nicaragua, from the country, a move the Vatican called “incomprehensible.” https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253760/dictatorship-in-nicaragua-bans-stations-of-the-cross-in-the-streets Today, the Church celebrates Saint David of Wales. David is the patron of the Welsh people, remembered as a missionary bishop and the founder of many monasteries during the sixth century. David was a popular namesake for churches in Wales prior to the Anglican schism, and his feast day is still an important religious and civic observance. Twelve monasteries have their founding ascribed to David, who developed a reputation for strict asceticism. His monks modeled their lives on the earliest desert hermits – combining hard manual labor, silence, long hours of prayer, and a diet that completely excluded meat and alcohol. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-david-of-wales-163

It's Thursday, January 19th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Open Doors documents persecution of Christians in new list Open Doors US released its 2023 World Watch List on Tuesday.  The document ranks the top 50 countries where it is most dangerous for Christians. North Korea is back on top of the list after Afghanistan took the spot in the 2022 report. The other top 10 persecuting countries are Somalia, Yemen, Eritrea, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Sudan. Open Doors estimates 360 million Christians faced high levels of persecution last year. Over 5,600 Christians were murdered, over 2,000 churches were attacked, and over 4,500 Christians were detained. According to Open Doors, Islamic violence is a driving factor which has led to the unprecedented numbers of Christians who have suffered. NARRATOR: “Right now, more Christians suffer higher levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith than at any time since the World Watch List began. “Over the last 30 years, Islamic oppression has grown and become more violent. Christian communities are severely attacked by a variety of jihadist groups. Converts pay a high price, and it's often their own families who carry out the so-called honor killings.” Church of England greenlights blessings of homosexual couples On Wednesday, the Church of England said it will not offer marriage ceremonies for people living in vile passions with the same sex. However, the organization plans to offer blessing services instead to homosexual couples. Bishops also plan on making an apology to people living sexually perverted lifestyles for any “rejection” they may have felt in churches. Proverbs 25:26 says, “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.” Transgender treatments for kids: Easier to get in U.S. A new study by Do No Harm found it is easier for children to get so-called “transgender treatments” in the U.S. than in Europe. Countries like the United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, and France have been closing down gender clinics or urging caution with the use of puberty blockers. Meanwhile, children in the U.S. have easier access to such things -- even without parental consent. Dr. William Malone, a board-certified endocrinologist, told Fox News, “Transgender medicine is big business, and youth who are transitioning today will be medical patients for life . . . Mental health among youth is at an all-time low, making them particularly vulnerable to solutions that suggest an ‘easy fix.'” Iowan Catholic Diocese affirms biological sex Thankfully, not everyone is following the transgender trend. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Des Moines, Iowa implemented 17 new polices on Monday in support of biological sex. The policies affect 17 schools and 80 parishes.  The diocese now requires students to use restrooms, wear uniforms, and play on sports teams that correspond to their biological sex. The policies also ban puberty blockers and so-called “preferred” pronouns.  The diocese stated, “Our biological sex, expressed by our body, is a gift from God and is unchangeable.”  New York COVID-shot mandate for health care workers struck down Last Friday, a New York state Supreme Court judge, Gerard Neri, struck down a COVID-shot mandate for healthcare workers. The state enacted the shot mandate in August 2021. Within months, tens of thousands of healthcare employees were terminated for not complying with the mandate, including many seeking religious exemptions. In June of last year, New York made the shot requirement permanent.  Plaintiffs welcomed the recent ruling. Mary Holland with Children's Health Defense said, “We hope that this decision will continue the trend towards lifting these dangerous and unwarranted . . . mandates throughout the country.” More tech layoffs Tech layoffs show no sign of stopping in the new year. Yesterday, Microsoft announced it would be cutting 10,000 jobs. So far this year, companies are laying off about 1,600 tech workers a day.  Tech layoffs in the first two weeks of 2023 amount to 15% of such layoffs in the whole of 2022. 22 Attorneys General oppose FDA on Kill Pill And finally, Attorneys General from 22 states are challenging the Federal Drug Administration's decision to increase access to the abortion Kill Pill. New FDA rules allow women to get the kill pills over the counter. The Attorneys General wrote a letter to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf calling for him to reverse the decision. The letter stated, “Though the FDA has abdicated its responsibility to protect women's health, we have not. To be crystal clear, you have not negated any of our laws that forbid the remote prescription, administration, and use of abortion-inducing drugs. The health and safety of our citizens—women and children included—is of paramount concern.” Isaiah 1:17 says, “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, January 19th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. A community mental health center is quietly administering Ketamine to Coloradans who struggle with severe depression. Now 15 patients are receiving the treatment at the Mental Health Center of Denver. It's the only such clinic at a community mental health center in the state to offer ketamine as treatment, and it's one of few in the nation, for people with low incomes. The Federal Drug Administration approved the use of esketamine, a version of the drug ketamine, in 2019. Other clinics have opened around the country, but the treatment is still hard to come by for those who can't afford to pay or lack private insurance coverage. Como reacción, en Estados Unidos movimientos como ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) y su subgrupo Gran Fury afinaron las herramientas del arte para llevar las protestas de la comunidad LGTBIQ+ al espacio público con la intención de que sus voces fueran escuchadas: el póster SILENCE = DEATH; la campaña KISSING DOESN'T KILL; el cartel ENJOY AZT, que imitaba un anuncio de Coca-cola; o la famosa cazadora con el triángulo y el mensaje “If I die of AIDS – forget burial – just drop my body on the steps of the F.D.A.”, dedicado a la Federal Drug Administration, que vistió David Wojnarowicz para la protesta de 1988 en la sede estatal del organismo en Maryland.

Info Regarding the National Z-Call on February 24Sex Change Transitioning for MinorsTransgender ideology is not just infecting our laws, but intruding into the lives of the most innocent among us—children—with the apparent growing support of the professional medical and education communities."All of us should demand a halt to the medical transition of minors until rigorous non-agenda-driven, long-term research is completed." Dr. Michelle Cretella, executive director of the American College of PediatriciansSex change transitioning for minors is the new popular “thing,” now promoted in schools beginning in Kindergarten, promoting risky medical procedures for minors often without parental involvement. The Federal Drug Administration has not approved pediatric hormone blocking, a relatively new practice, first introduced in the United States in 2007. Even though giving cross-sex hormones, like estrogen to a boy is also not FDA-approved, these so-called hormone treatments are now offered in Planned Parenthood clinics.Celebrations of grade school student transitioning, like the third grader in West Linn, Oregon are becoming common. If the parent chooses, soon this 8-year old boy will be given hormone blockers to avoid going through natural puberty to become a man. The treatment is irreversible. In his book, When Harry Became Sally, Ryan Anderson shares the results of a study examining the risk of suicide among transgender teens, confirming they attempt suicide more frequently than adolescents, generally. The study assumes the unproven belief that all gender identities are equally healthy and fixed in all children and teens. This is an ideological premise touted by professional medical and psychiatric guilds, not scientific fact. Evidence suggests that sex reassignment surgery does not improve rates of attempted suicide. The study also offers no proof that these radical therapies…will prevent adolescents from attempting suicide. The result of this will be scores more children needlessly sterilized, placed on toxic cross-sex hormones, and maimed by mutilating surgeries as early as age 13,—none of which have been proven to prevent suicide in the long term. There is no medical path to achieve REAL gender change. It is scientific fact individuals are born with permanent DNA in every cell of their body, either male or female. Biological-birth sex, even with surgical alteration of body parts, and opposite-gender hormone treatment, is unchangeable. There is another possible explanation for the high suicide rates that has received little attention. As Ray Blanchard and J. Michael Bailey, two LGBT affirming psychologists, have pointed out, it is quite possible that underlying traumas, mental health, and personality issues combine to cause both gender dysphoria and suicidality in vulnerable youth. There is reason to suspSupport the show (https://www.parentsrightsined.com/support-the-cause.html)

Dramatic increase in deaths among seniors since "corona vaccinations" began. "October is going to be a very exciting month in the U.S., regarding COVID-19 vaccines," says Dr. Gregory Poland, head of Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group. "On Oct. 14 the Federal Drug Administration is going to look at COVID-19 boosters for Moderna. On Oct. 15, (the FDA will review) boosters for Johnson & Johnsons' COVID-19 vaccine. And on Oct. 29, the FDA will look at extending emergency use for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children down to 5 years of age," says Dr. Poland. He adds that vaccinations of children could begin within a couple of weeks of the emergency use authorization.  Dr. Poland also says approval of Merck's antiviral COVID-19 pill is expected soon, too."We're excited about this because it's oral," says Dr. Poland. "The nice part about this is you can take it at home, and it fits with the same paradigm we already have in clinical medicine — treating influenza with an antiviral."In this Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Poland also talks about waning immunities and the approval possibility of mixing and matching COVID-19 booster vaccines being approved. And he reminds women who are pregnant to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Gazelka, M.D. (@hmgazelkamd)   A fourth COVID-19 surge is blanketing the U.S., and the delta variant is the culprit. "Where did this delta variant come from? It came from unvaccinated people getting infected in large numbers allowing the virus to continue mutating," says Dr. Gregory Poland, an infectious diseases expert and head of Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group. In the past, a person with COVID-19 might infect two to four people. But with the delta variant, one person can infect nine people, according to Dr. Poland. He says if you want to protect yourself and your family, wear a mask, especially indoors, and get vaccinated with an appropriate series of one of the COVID-19 vaccines. "These are the most studied vaccines in the history of the world," Dr. Poland emphasizes. "There have never been this many people who have received this many doses of vaccines during this amount of time with as much scrutiny as these COVID-19 vaccines have had." In this Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Poland answers questions about a person's waning immunity and the likelihood of COVID-19 booster shots. He also explains the two phases of immunity and goes into detail about the extensive Federal Drug Administration license approval process for COVID-19 vaccines. The first modern antidepressants were originally tuberculosis medications, created from leftover World War II rocket fuel. In 2019, the Federal Drug Administration approved Spravato for depression, a chemical that was originally a veterinary anesthetic and later used recreationally as a club drug. Why shouldn't tomorrow's antidepressants also come from unexpected sources? Rising COVID infection rates and death tolls lead millions to worry about their own health and safety as well as that of loved ones. These concerns compound daily stressors that can include grief, economic insecurity, job loss, food and housing insecurities—all factors that are contributing to rising suicide rates. The reliable joyful distractions such as weddings, family gatherings and spontaneous get-togethers are on hold. Unsurprisingly, anxieties combined with decreased human interaction have led otherwise healthy people to depression and a sudden increase in prescriptions of antidepressant medications. And for some people, these drugs are effective at keeping a person out of their persistent cycle of negative thoughts, a symptom that defines clinical depression. As of 2018, nearly one in eight Americans use antidepressants. Unfortunately, more than a third of patients are resistant to the mood-improving benefits of medicine's best antidepressant drugs. These people are not completely out of options, and science is steadily working to find ways to help them. There are chemicals already out there that can restore their mood balance, and in some cases, even save their lives. Unfortunately, these drugs have a name that wrongfully conjures up controversy and alarmist news headlines: hallucinogens.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thes3podcast/message

ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 044 A Mother’s Crusade to Find a Cure for Her Son - Amber Freed Amber Freed is the mother of twins, Maxwell and Riley. At a year old, Maxwell was diagnosed with a disease too rare to have a formal name, referred to as SLC6A1. When Amber was told nothing could be done, she decided to fight. She left her career that day and shifted her focus towards a treatment. She's a leader in the rare disease community and is the founder of SLC6A1 Connect. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Give us a little background on the beginning of your journey as an advocate? I was raised in a household afflicted by drug and alcohol abuse. I have two younger twin sisters and I filled the adult role in the house where it was needed. When I turned 18, I became their legal guardian. As a child, I had the weight of the world on my shoulders, but it gave me a tremendous sense of grit and determination.  Tell us about your kids coming into the world and becoming a mom. Riley and Maxwell were so loved before they were ever born. We went through two years of IVF to be blessed with twins. They were born a little early and were perfect. We brought them home from the hospital and everything was going wonderfully. At about 4 months old, I realized Maxwell wasn't doing the same things as Riley.  What started you on a mission to get answers about Maxwell's development? My pediatrician kept saying that boys are slower than girls. My mother's intuition said something was wrong. Riley was inquisitive, reaching for toys and exploring her environment. Maxwell seemed like he was just stuck in his body. From 4 months old to 9 months old, my pediatrician's tone changed. One of our first meetings was with an optometrist because we thought Maxwell couldn't see well. The optometrist confirmed that he could see. He explained that he had seen similar situations that were actually something wrong with the brain and that we would need to get genetic testing. It took about 6 months to get the results back and Maxwell just kept declining.  What were the results of the genetic test? We were led to a bad news room full of doctor's with sad faces. They told us Maxwell was diagnosed with SLC6A1 and I was so confused as to why it didn't have a name. They explained it was too rare to have a name and was only known by its genetic location. They knew nothing about the disease and they gave us an article that had been written about the disease. There are 7000 rare diseases and Maxwell is 1 of 34 people in the world with SLC6A1. We were left with the suggestion that Maxwell was too rare for anyone to care and to go home and enjoy him, that doctors couldn't help us.  Calling a scientist in Denmark was the beginning of your crusade. What has happened since then? The day we got Maxwell's diagnosis, I went back to work, resigned from my job and set off on this journey. I called people all over the world, read every text book imaginable and when I contacted someone that wasn't able to help me, I asked for three connections to other people who may be able to help. I kept doing that until I became an expert in the disease. I realized through my research that SLC6A1 is treatable and curable through gene replacement therapy. All of my efforts from that point forward were focused on gene replacement therapy. A scientist I had been trying to connect with finally called me back, explained that he was going to a conference and that he was too busy to talk, so I flew to the conference to connect with him. He explained to me that the technology existed to replace the gene, but that it was going to be a difficult journey and that $4M-$7M had to be raised.  How much money have you raised so far? I raised $2M of our $4M goal in a year and a half and it has already gotten us far. We completed the tests in mice, we've constructed the gene replacement therapy and the next steps are to file an initiation for a new drug with the Federal Drug Administration and begin the clinical trial to treat children. If we can raise the money and things go as planned, we'll be able to start the trial as early as next year.  What advice do you have for the listeners? Don't lose faith, don't lose hope, and keep trying because science is moving quickly. No one ever wants to join the rare disease community, but we're a group of close-knit and warm people willing to help each other. Nightingale Tales: Stories from My Life as Nurse, by Lynn Dow, spans 50 years of one nurse's career experiences–some funny, some sad, and all true. A registered nurse, Dow began her medical career reluctantly but eventually worked as a staff nurse, head nurse, teacher, and mentor at large medical centers on both the east and west coasts. As handmaidens to physicians in the 1950s, nurses evolved into admired independent practitioners by the start of the new millennium. Nightingale Tales is a peek into that transition, as told by a nurse who lived it. Each chapter is a stand-alone story depicting the changes in the profession, brought about by time, the feminist movement, and advances in technology. KEY CHANGES Recovery time: from weeks to days Smoking: allowed inside hospitals around machines and in breakrooms “Cracking the chest”: preceded CPR Hospital beds: manual cranks replaced with electric beds and remote controls Pharmaceuticals: borrowed from other patients or units; dispensed by nurses after 5 pm and weekends Uniforms: highly starched dresses and caps replaced with comfortable scrubs Gloves: rarely worn except in surgery; physician’s order required Leadership styles: dictatorial approach became more human and lenient Litigation: rarely used as an option for malpractice cases KEY QUOTES “We had to do it all without ever losing sight of the fact that our primary concern was to nurture our patients. We did not have the high-tech equipment so common today when I first became a nurse; back then, we relied on our powers of observation. We looked at the patient instead of the computer readouts. “If aspirin were discovered today, it would most likely be banned by the Federal Drug Administration.” “I appreciate the advantages of technology, and no way do I wish nurses would go back to practicing the way I did—but I must admit, I long for a little more of the personal touch, a better understanding of what it is to be a patient. Machine-watching is important—but it would be nice if modern nursing involved a little more patient-watching as well.” BUY Nightingale Tales: Stories from My Life as a Nurse RECOMMENDATION BUY The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right Connect with us! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode of RCA Radio, host Erika Porcelli and guest Susan Schniepp, Distinguished Fellow at Regulatory Compliance Associates (RCA), examine the resurgence of data integrity issues and the focus of global regulatory agencies. With the recent rise in data integrity-related citations, global regulatory bodies including the FDA, MHRA, World Health Organization, and PIC/S, have released documents to reeducate the pharmaceutical industry on data integrity concepts. Many of these guidelines include an element of quality culture. We break down these guidelines and examine the history of data integrity, what it means to have a quality culture, and how to integrate a quality culture in the product lifecycle. No longer just the concern of the quality control unit, data integrity is the concern of an entire organization, bringing forth the concept that your data is only as good as the culture of your company.

Your App Lady Show Notes Series 1 Episode 2 Welcome to Episode Number 1 a part of series number 2, all about apps that I use everyday. Today on the podcast, I will talk about one of my favorite apps.  But first, here is a little tech news for you. Tech News:  Apple Heart Study from the verge.com. This study is with the Apple Watch. You have to have the Apple Watch that was released second. The first Apple Watch won’t work with the study. I may need to get a new Watch!!! “Late last month, Apple launched a new study in partnership with Stanford University, one of many studies the company has embarked on since the device’s 2015 launch, that will track Apple Watch users’ heart rhythms for irregularity. This type of data collection can be done with the current model’s heart rate monitor, but more advanced forms of tracking and testing, like EKGs, would require all new hardware and software. On the same day, the Federal Drug Administration cleared the Apple Watch’s first medical device accessory, an EKG reader built into a watch strap from medical device company AliveCor. Down the line, it seems like Apple wants as much of this technology built into the watch as possible, contingent only on what is actually feasible given current hardware and software constraints.” Studies are also being done for detecting seizures, mental health issues etc. Read more at https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/21/16806656/apple-watch-ekg-heart-monitor-future-models-development App: Voxer by Voxer Pro LLC The Voxer app is like a walkie talkie. You must have WiFi or cellular but otherwise there is a free version. Voxer is great for conversation without the need for the person to be there at the moment  It’s like a monologue. You can send the voice message and then later the other person can respond back to you. You can also send text, photo and video over Voxer. The Voxer messages are encrypted end to end Voxer is available for iPhone, Android and web. I use the free version. There is a paid version that is $3.99 and includes more features like transcription and the ability to recall a message. Voxer has been key to my productivity and support in my business. My admin and I use Voxer for quick and easy communication. Because this is our primary method of communication, we are able to go back and read or listen to messages as needed. I also use Voxer to communicate with my business coach, mentors and business friends. I am able to send them questions, messages and wins and they can respond when it is convenient. This keeps the communication functional without interrupting them when they are working. Find out more about Voxer at https://www.voxer.com. Tech Tip: The tech tip today is how to save your battery power.  On the iPhone or iPad, save your battery power by turning on “Low Power Mode”. Here are the steps to turn on “Low Power Mode”: Go to the Settings icon Click on Battery Look at Low Power Mode - make sure this is switched on and you see green. "Drug companies are spending time on things which make money, not that work."  That's according to filmmaker Jeff Witzeman.  He followed his wife with a camera through Stage 3 bladder cancer.  She came through on the other side, cancer free (in 30-days) with all her organs, and none of the side-effects which chemotherapy and radiation would have inflicted on her  body.  http://cancercanbekilled.com/  The Federal Drug Administration doesn't investigate natural cures because there is nothing to patent or make a profit. Germany, Sweden, and several other European countries use naturopathic medicine to heal cancer patients; Jeff says that happens at a third of the cost and with no side-effects. How do you know what is legitimate and what isn't?  And what choices do children have in America when it comes to Leukemia or Lymphoma? https://www.facebook.com/MoneyMakingSense/ Jeff is a panelist at the Indie Film Showcase at Sundance Film Festival in 2018. Since its founding in 1977, Texas Back Institute (https://texasback.com/about-us/) has been recognized around the world as a state-of-the-art clinic for spine and neurological treatments. Along with recruiting the best and the brightest spine surgeons and clinicians, the practice has been an important contributor in the development of medical innovations such as artificial disc replacement, treatment for scoliosis, disc fusion and for the testing of many other medical devices on behalf of the Federal Drug Administration. The practice is now earning accolades for its spinal research with the launch of the Spine Biomechanics Laboratory at Texas Back Institute. According to a recent article in the online medical site “Spine Universe,” this team and facility, located in Plano, Texas is “helping patients understand exactly how spine conditions affect their movements and muscle activities, and quantifies how much improvement they have made following spine surgery and other treatments.” One of the leaders of this research effort is Dr. Scott Kutz (https://texasback.com/find-a-physician/name/scott-kutz/), a neurosurgeon at Texas Back Institute. He explained why this research is important to both TBI patients and spine specialists around the world. “From a research perspective, this process is extremely valuable because it allows us, as physicians, to understand what we are accomplishing with surgery. The subjective reporting from patients is not as conclusive. While it is certainly wonderful to have a patient return for follow-up and report that they are feeling better, we need objective measures to prove that what has been done is improving the patient’s health. This research is also important for our practice here at the Texas Back Institute and when it is documented in publications, we can share these results – both good and bad – with other spine specialists around the world.” View full article at www.texasback.com/blog

How Safe Are Your Compounded Drugs? Safer Since FDA Involvement

How safe are the special drug compounds you take or put in or on your body? Most people, today, think that they are pretty safe but that has not always been the case. Back in 2012, the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Massachusetts produced 18,000 vials of a contaminated steroid that was distributed across about 20 states. The tainted compound, to date, has sickened 751 people with fungal meningitis and related illnesses. At last total, there were 64 deaths. In 2015, the company reached a $200 million civil settlement to victims and various creditors but, as of today, nothing has been paid. The federal government also has charged company head Barry J. Cadden, 50, with 96 criminal counts including 25 counts for racketeering acts of second-degree murder. A trial began in Boston on January 9 and the jury just started its deliberations on March 17. No verdicts have been reached at the time of this recording. If convicted of the murder counts, Cadden could be facing life in prison. Today, we talk with Ed Zatta, owner of RXQ Compounding LLC about new federal regulations to guarantee the safety of small batch drug compounding. Before the New England Compounding Center disaster, each state regulated its own drug compounding firms. There are a patchwork of different laws and different safety inspection procedures. After the tragedy, 18 states enacted new regulatory laws and the Federal Drug Administration created a new category of compounding called 503 (b) where each drug compound must be tested for sterility, potency, and whether any of its elements exceeded the “Beyond Use Date.” The new federal law began in January 2017 Zatta took advantage of the federal regulations and created a new “outsourcing facility” under the stricter federal guidelines before they were required. It takes extra care and extra procedures to make drug compounds safe, according to Zatta. But, he thinks that the federal regulations ensure quality and safety for unsuspecting consumers. He asserts that the federal guidelines can prevent future tragedies such as the New England Compounding Center disaster.

A fourth COVID-19 surge is blanketing the U.S., and the delta variant is the culprit."Where did this delta variant come from? It came from unvaccinated people getting infected in large numbers allowing the virus to continue mutating," says Dr. Gregory Poland, an infectious diseases expert and head of Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group. In the past, a person with COVID-19 might infect two to four people. But with the delta variant, one person can infect nine people, according to Dr. Poland. He says if you want to protect yourself and your family, wear a mask, especially indoors, and get vaccinated with an appropriate series of one of the COVID-19 vaccines."These are the most studied vaccines in the history of the world," Dr. Poland emphasizes. "There have never been this many people who have received this many doses of vaccines during this amount of time with as much scrutiny as these COVID-19 vaccines have had."In this Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Poland answers questions about a person's waning immunity and the likelihood of COVID-19 booster shots.
