Jim talks with Nate Soares about the ideas in his and Eliezer Yudkowsky's book If Anybody Builds It, Everybody Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All. They discuss the book's claim that mitigating existential AI risk should be a top global priority, the idea that LLMs are grown, the opacity of deep learning networks, the Golden Gate activation vector, whether our understanding of deep learning networks might improve enough to prevent catastrophe, goodness as a narrow target, the alignment problem, the problem of pointing minds, whether LLMs are just stochastic parrots, why predicting a corpus often requires more mental machinery than creating a corpus, depth & generalization of skills, wanting as an effective strategy, goal orientation, limitations of training goal pursuit, transient limitations of current AI, protein folding and AlphaFold, the riskiness of automating alignment research, the correlation between capability and more coherent drives, why the authors anchored their argument on transformers & LLMs, the inversion of Moravec's paradox, the geopolitical multipolar trap, making world leaders aware of the issues, a treaty to ban the race to superintelligence, the specific terms of the proposed treaty, a comparison with banning uranium enrichment, why Jim tentatively thinks this proposal is a mistake, a priesthood of the power supply, whether attention is a zero-sum game, and much more. What happens when an AI strategy meets the real-world complexity of healthcare, law, and finance? That's the challenge at the heart of my conversation with Mark Sherwood, CIO of Wolters Kluwer, a global leader in professional information services. With over three decades in technology leadership across Microsoft, Symantec, and Nuance, Mark brings a rare combination of enterprise depth and hands-on pragmatism to the AI discussion. Mark explains why cloud-native architecture and data governance are the twin foundations of trustworthy AI. He shares how Wolters Kluwer is embedding AI across highly regulated industries—from helping doctors access life-saving insights through natural language queries to giving tax and legal professionals faster, more accurate guidance on complex regulations. Behind the innovation lies a disciplined approach: governing data, managing risk, and building confidence in AI systems that must meet the highest standards of accuracy and compliance. We also explore how to build high-trust, low-friction partnerships between IT and business teams to prevent shadow IT while accelerating digital transformation. Mark offers candid insights into the rise of AI agents, the emerging risks of quantum security, and why he believes that high-quality data is the most valuable currency in digital transformation. His philosophy is simple: speed means nothing without trust, and trust starts with clean, well-governed data. From cloud transformation to the future of AI regulation, this episode offers a grounded look at how global enterprises can scale responsibly in an era where innovation often outruns policy. So as AI becomes inseparable from how professionals think and work, how do we balance speed with stewardship? And are we truly ready for the ethical, technical, and quantum frontiers ahead? Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer and David Faber discussed the market rally on a day in which September CPI was scheduled to be released. The report has been postponed until October 24 due to the government shutdown. Shares of Bank of America and Morgan Stanley jumped on better-than-expected quarterly results. The anchors reacted to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's harsh criticism of China at the CNBC Invest in America Forum. Sara Eisen interviewed Fed Governor Stephen Miran at that event, discussing his push for further rate cuts. On the AI Front: A consortium including Blackrock, Nvidia, Microsoft and xAI agreed to buy a data center company for about $40 billion. //The Wire//2300Z October 14, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: SUSPICIOUS FIRE STRIKES ITALIAN MONASTERY. ISRAEL/HAMAS DEAL ON ROCKY GROUND DUE TO DELAYS IN RETURN OF CAPTIVES' REMAINS TO ISRAEL.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Italy: A catastrophic fire was reported at the Monastery of Bernaga just north of Milan on Sunday. All 21 nuns were evacuated from the convent without any injuries, however the fire consumed most of monastery, including the storage rooms used to house priceless paintings.Analyst Comment: Random church fires around Europe are disturbingly common these days, but the timing of this fire is exceptionally suspicious. This monastery was associated with St. Carlo Acutis, who was recently canonized by the Vatican three weeks ago. This fire broke out on his very first Feast Day at the same monastery at which he received his first Communion. The cause of the fire is not known, however local sources have implied it may have been an electrical failure of some kind. Due to the delicate nature of such fires, a more thorough investigation will be needed to determine the cause of the blaze.Middle East: The much-hyped peace accords have reached rocky ground as Israeli forces have cut Gaza aid by 50%. Israeli forces have claimed that Hamas has violated the ceasefire agreement by being too slow to return the remains of the deceased prisoners still in their possession. This afternoon the Red Cross did confirm that four coffins of remains were transferred into their custody this morning, and the remains of the 24 other prisoners will be transferred into the hands of the Red Cross as soon as they are able to arrange transport through the completely destroyed parts of Gaza.Analyst Comment: Right now, the sheer destruction of Gaza appears to be the biggest barrier to recovering remains. Obviously nobody trusts statements by Hamas officials, however they have claimed that many of the remains are buried in underground locations that are currently off-limits due to under Israeli control, meaning that Hamas cannot physically get to the locations to recover remains. This of course would easily be solved by conveying the GPS coordinates of remains to Red Cross officials managing the exchange, however a very real concern still exists...it's possible that Hamas themselves don't have control of all of the hostage remains. It is widely known that Israeli forces struck several underground tunnels that were (probably unknowingly) being used to hold captives. This is indeed why there are dead captives in the first place. As such, a tunnel collapsing and all hostages and militants alike being killed in the strike means that the exact position of human remains might be exceptionally hard to find. Considering the history of warfare itself, there is not a single conflict in the history of the world in which all casualties and all remains have been recovered. Of course, this conflict is quite a bit different as the remains that are sought are those of prisoners (i.e. noncombatants), but still, this might be a major sticking point if Hamas cannot actually find all of the prisoners' remains that they had at the start of the conflict.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In the tech world, today is the last day that Microsoft will support the Windows 10 operating system. While this seems rather innocuous, this could be a rather big problem. Microsoft is known for doing their customers dirty just on principle, but in this case the problems that could result from this could quite significantly affect society. When Windows 8 stopped being supported, only 2-3% of users were still using it, with the overwhelming majority of users upgrading to Windows 10 by the time Windows 8 was obsolete. As of this month, roughly 40% of all Windows users are still using Windows 10...which stops being supported today. This means that security patches will be

Forrester's latest report indicates that the AI hype wave is reaching its peak, with many enterprises expected to delay a significant portion of their AI spending until 2027 due to challenges in proving return on investment (ROI). As a response to increasing regulatory complexities, 60% of Fortune 100 companies are anticipated to appoint heads of AI governance by next year. This shift highlights a growing focus on compliance and risk management rather than pure innovation. Meanwhile, G2's findings present a contrasting narrative, revealing that nearly 60% of companies have successfully deployed AI agents, with a low failure rate and high satisfaction among users.Despite the positive deployment statistics from G2, a study by Atlassian uncovers a paradox: while individual usage of AI tools has surged, 96% of businesses report no significant improvements in efficiency or innovation. The survey indicates that only 3% of executives believe AI has driven transformational change within their organizations. This disconnect suggests that while AI tools are being adopted widely, their impact on actual business outcomes remains limited, leading to skepticism among decision-makers.Anthropic's recent research raises concerns about the security of large language models, revealing that as few as 250 malicious documents could effectively poison these models, compromising their functionality. This alarming finding underscores the vulnerabilities present in AI systems, particularly those relying on public or partner data. The implications for businesses are significant, as they must now consider the security of their AI systems alongside their operational capabilities. In the hardware arena, Apple and Intel are igniting a new chip race, with Apple launching its M5 chip, which boasts enhanced AI performance and graphics capabilities. Intel's Panther Lake chip is set to compete with improved efficiency and performance metrics. As AI technology becomes increasingly integrated into devices, managed service providers (MSPs) must adapt to the complexities of endpoint management and AI readiness. The evolving landscape emphasizes the need for governance, security, and effective measurement of AI outcomes, positioning MSPs as crucial enablers in this transition.Four things to know today 00:00 Forrester, G2, Atlassian, and Anthropic Paint a Complex AI Picture — Success, Stagnation, and Security Risk06:09 Apple's M5 and Intel's Panther Lake Show the Future: Every Device Becomes an AI Engine09:17 GoTo, Gradient, and LevelBlue Show the Next MSP Evolution — Refinement, Not Reinvention12:21 Microsoft's Final Windows 10 Update and IE Mode Lockdown Signal the End of Legacy Tolerance This is the Business of Tech. ‘Bundling' is a well-known business strategy, especially in tech, where it's not only used to increase sales and move slow-selling products, but also to tie customers into an ecosystem (such as Apple or Microsoft). So what about all the unbundling that's been happening in agtech recently? While historically we've seen seed companies offer bundled options, such as seeds, crop management, and data products, there is now a trend towards ‘unbundling' in agriculture. This is exemplified by Corteva's recent decision to unbundle its seed and crop protection divisions into two publicly traded companies. Similarly, Farmers Business Network(FBN) has also spun off its global crop solutions business from its digital marketplace. In this episode, Sarah Nolet unpacks the bundling/unbundling dilemma in agtech with Shane Thomas, founder of Upstream Ag Insights and Matthew Pryor, Founding Partner at Tenacious Ventures. They discuss:The strategic impacts of unbundling for companies such as FBN and Corteva, as well as the broader impacts on farmers and markets. The market dynamics that encourage companies to bundle or unbundle. How Large Language Models (LLMs) are being used in agtech, including Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and other AI frameworks.Shane Thomas' new AskUpstream AI tool.Recent acquisitions in agtech, such as the Growers Edge acquisition of FarmTestUseful Links:What Corteva's Seed and Chemical Split Could Mean For Your Farm, Successful Farming Growers Edge Acquires FarmTest, Growers EdgeFarmers Business Network the latest to spin off company, following Corteva, Kraft Heinz, AgFunderNewsDTN acquires Grain Discovery, DTNAlphaEarth, Google DeepMindKraft Heinz to split a decade after merger in a bid to revive growth, The GuardianFor more information and resources, visit our website. It's time to retire NTLM - but how? Richard chats with Steve Syfuhs about the need and challenge of retiring an ubiquitous authentication protocol first used in the 1990s. While guidance to move away from NTLM has been available since 2010, it has only become feasible in the past couple of years, and Microsoft is now providing tooling to make the transition easier. Steve discusses enabling auditing of NTLM usage - recent improvements will allow you to view which services rely on NTLM. Sometimes, a configuration change can resolve the problem, and now there is Microsoft Negotiate to help as an intermediary in determining which protocol to use. We're back with a follow-up to the “no inner monologue” chaos, but this time, we're going deeper. Kristin and I unpack what it actually feels like when your brain disconnects, how trauma can flip your reality switch, and why dissociation might just be your mind's weirdest defense mechanism. Then we shift gears into something truly wild: the microscopic villains that can give you cancer. Yep, your high school biology class never warned you about this lineup of viruses, parasites, and bacteria with major overachiever energy. And of course, we can't resist taking a detour into herpes (because why not?) and what it's like to realize your body might be hosting more guests than you invited. The AI Breakdown: Daily Artificial Intelligence News and Discussions
Today on the AI Daily Brief, we explore why the next great AI platform war isn't about models at all—but about context: who owns it, how it's organized, and which platforms can access it. From Slack and Salesforce positioning themselves as the “agentic OS” of the enterprise to Google, Microsoft, and Grammarly battling to anchor AI agents in the data-rich environments where people already work, the competitive edge is shifting from model quality to contextual depth. As enterprises move toward “context engineering”—the discipline of making organizational data accessible and usable by AI—control over contextual ecosystems may define the next era of AI dominance. Last week we got a facelift—new name, new look, same deep data dives. This week? We prove the rebrand wasn't just cosmetic. Rob kicks things off with a time machine moment: his first gig at Microsoft in the '90s, building the Windows Installer. The running joke back then? "Installing yesterday's apps tomorrow." Cut to 2025, and that exact same code shows up while he's configuring an AI tool for data modeling. Build something right, and it really sticks around. And that's the bridge, AI context management isn't some brave new world. It's the same discipline that made Power BI models and Copilot integrations actually useful. You don't need to burn it all down and start over. You just need to get specific enough to matter. If you've suffered through bloated "AI strategy" decks or watched a model confidently hallucinate through your business logic, this episode's for you. The fix isn't fancier AI—it's giving it structure, purpose, and the right context to work with. That's how you turn a show pony into a workhorse. Bottom line: AI isn't a revolution. It's a new faucet. And the people who know how to connect it—and what to feed it—are already leading the next wave of transformation.

AI is revolutionizing IT service management, significantly enhancing productivity and operational efficiency. A recent report indicates that AI has reduced ticket resolution times by an impressive 76%, allowing IT teams to focus on more complex issues. However, the rapid adoption of generative AI, particularly in high-stakes areas like mergers and acquisitions, raises serious concerns about data security, with a significant percentage of businesses expressing worries over data quality and ethical considerations. The prevalence of unapproved AI tools among employees further complicates governance, as many are using these tools without oversight, highlighting the need for managed AI governance.California has taken a pioneering step in regulating AI by passing a landmark bill that mandates safety protocols for chatbot operators. This legislation aims to protect vulnerable users, particularly children, by requiring age verification and safety measures related to suicidal thoughts. The law, which will take effect in January 2026, reflects a growing trend toward AI regulation, emphasizing the importance of safety in technology. Meanwhile, the Federal Communications Commission is considering changes that could allow internet service providers to hide fees again, which could impact transparency for consumers. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is facing challenges as layoffs affect key divisions responsible for national security and infrastructure. These layoffs come at a time when the private sector is increasingly responsible for cybersecurity, especially amid rising AI-driven threats. The reduction in federal coordination raises concerns about the ability to effectively manage these threats, placing more pressure on managed service providers (MSPs) to ensure security and compliance for their clients.Microsoft has announced the end of support for Windows 10, prompting a critical need for MSPs to reassess endpoint security and upgrade strategies. With a significant portion of users still on Windows 10, the lack of ongoing updates poses a risk for vulnerabilities. This transition presents an opportunity for MSPs to not only push for upgrades but also to enhance security policies and prepare clients for future technological advancements, including AI integration. The evolving landscape of technology and regulation underscores the necessity for MSPs to adapt and provide comprehensive governance and security solutions. On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, Avik speaks with award-winning techno-thriller author Guy Morris about blending rigorous research with fiction to wake readers up to real-world risks. We unpack how 70 years of AI progress, geopolitics, national debt, climate pressure, and election manipulation converge—and why credible facts make stories stick. Guy shares the FBI-knock-on-the-door moment that reshaped his view of technology, a clear warning on facial recognition and biometric logins, and his choice to write high-tension, non-gun-hero protagonists grounded in human ethics. If you care about mental clarity in an anxious news cycle, digital safety, and page-turners that actually teach, this episode is for you. About the guest: Guy Morris spent 38 years leading tech and strategy at firms like IBM, Oracle, and Microsoft before turning to fiction. Since 2020 he's released multiple award-winning thrillers—often compared to Dan Brown and Robert Ludlum—rooted in real technologies, history, and geopolitics. Key takeaways : Research isn't window dressing; verifiable facts make fiction provoke thought and change behavior AI isn't new—it's a 70-year arc now reaching mass application; risks arise when commercial incentives downplay failure modes . Guy writes to show the convergence of pressures: geopolitics, national debt, climate, banking shifts, misinformation, and democratic backsliding Thrillers as a release valve: transforming societal anxiety into narrative helps audiences process fear and consider options. A 1990s incident—an NSA program “escaped”—sparked Guy's security lens and eventually drew a visit from the FBI, proving how plausible his reconstruction was. Core advice: avoid using biometrics (face, iris, thumbprint) as passwords; if compromised, you can't reset your face or print. He favors non-violent protagonists and ethical problem-solving; ingenuity over lethality preserves human dignity and reduces copycat harm. Mental habit: focus on history + humanity—tech amplifies old human tendencies; understand the past to choose wiser futures. Why is Microsoft switching off from one of the world's most used operating systems. And how bad that could be for millions of computer users around the world. How big a deal could this be? Also why Madagascar, one of the world's poorest nations, is now in turmoil with its President fleeing the country. And The Royal Australian Mint is releasing new $1 Bluey coins this week and they are already being pre-sold online for inflated prices. It follows the wildly popular release of Bluey coins last year. Send us a textOne of the most powerful truths about change is that it often begins in the most ordinary moments—when we choose authenticity, vulnerability, and the courage to be seen. Our guest In the Den today is Ash Beckham, who discovered that courage to be seen, which led her on a surprising journey to advocacy and activism. Ash is an author, advocate, and public speaker known for her viral TEDx talk “Coming Out of Your Closet”. In that powerful speech, Ash reminds us that we are ALL in the closet and invites us to step into empathy by recognizing the silent struggles we all carry. Today Ash and Sara unpack how Ash's vulnerability—starting with everyday moments—has grown to become a powerful form of activism and inclusion. Special Guest: Ash BeckhamAsh Beckham is a mom of two, speaker, career coach, equality advocate, and author of Step Up: How to Live with Courage and Become an Everyday Leader. Ash is an inclusion activist whose TEDx Talk “Coming Out of Your Closet” became a viral sensation. Her intrepid, relatable, and intrinsically comical style has made her an in-demand speaker, including events at Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Bank of America, and the keynote for the first LGBTQ Conference at Harvard University.
