In the 7 years of doing this podcast, I've never been "on time" to connect our episode to the holiday that is happening. (For those of you who might be interested - I'd need a bigger staff to pull that off.) However, this year, this episode is about Fathers and is airing the Monday before Father's Day! Congratulations to all - us and all dad's who go the distance.I need to mention that Sensei Jay, who has a story here, has 3 sons. All of them know their dad to be amazing. But time only allowed for me to reach out to one of them. Don't be mad guys. So enjoy this episode and get in touch to be part of our salute to Mother's as warriors. Looking forward to hearing from you. Maybe this is the episode that motivates you to support us directly by clicking the link below. In this week's episode of the Vodscarf we welcome legendary documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux (after he accidentally walked onto set, why else would he be there?!) and Oxford astrophysicist Professor Chris Lintott to the studio for an hour of pure, unadulterated science and anti-comedy. Things get incredibly weird, incredibly fast. Watch as we attempt to save our nose-diving viewer retention graph by shouting random words at you, dive deep into the tragic family lore of Harry's fictional heir, Gary, and witness Louis Theroux showing he is in fact Harry's number one fan. If you've ever wanted to hear an esteemed Oxford professor explain why aliens might just be a bunch of Venusian penguins standing around in their own poo, listen up. 00:00 – Fixing our terrible viewer retention graph (Kittens! Today on Bit Public Radio, Host Luke Bovard explores the strange and unpredictable world of misconception. Correspondent Angelina Washington reports from Troy, New York, where a Flag Day celebration honoring Uncle Sam escalates into civic confusion, alphabet panic, and unexpected papal involvement. Next, Mandy Keyes investigates food misconceptions at a farmer's market in Pashook, Iowa, where a simple question about tomatoes leads to nightshade conspiracies, unusual educational materials, and some deeply confusing ideas about reproduction. Finally, in her first-ever field report, Gail "Shut Up Gail" Shephard accidentally investigates immaculate conception instead of misconception, uncovering mysterious pregnancies, impossible football outcomes, secret societies, and gardening techniques that defy explanation. Misunderstandings were made. Conclusions were reached. Facts became optional. Umar Aziz, Partner, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel at DG Partners, joins Scott Brown to share lessons from a career that nearly took him into shipping brokerage before a major life event brought him back to law.In this episode of Lessons I Learned in Law, Umar reflects on how personal circumstances shaped the start of his legal career, including his decision to return to Clifford Chance after initially turning down his training contract. His first lesson is that there is more to life than work. Drawing on his own experiences of loss, family responsibility and high-pressure legal environments, he discusses the importance of building a full life outside the job — and why excellence matters across work, family, friendships and personal pursuits. His second lesson comes from advice he received early in his career: learn from the best bits of the lawyers around you. Umar explains why every lawyer you work with has something worth copying — and something worth leaving behind. His final lesson challenges the idea that lawyers should always try to “win” every point. Whether negotiating with clients, managing internal teams or building long-term business relationships, Umar argues that sustainable success comes from fairness, trust and mutual respect — not squeezing every last drop out of the other side.Along the way, Umar discusses moving from litigation into funds, the transition from private practice into DG Partners, his COO and GC role, and why full-contact karate helps him stay disciplined, present and switched off from work. In the latest episode of The Cory Cast, I sit down with martial arts black belt and practicing attorney Tony Johnston for a deep dive into what a lifetime on the mats actually teaches you about success. Tony shares his incredible martial arts evolution, tracing his roots from the traditional striking disciplines of Karate and Tae Kwon Do to finding his ultimate passion on the ground in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). As a dedicated black belt who has spent the majority of his life studying and practicing grappling, he opens up about what it takes to sustain a lifelong love for the sport and the daily discipline required to reach the highest levels of combat sports. We also explore the fascinating intersection between martial arts and the legal world, discussing exactly how the problem-solving and strategic thinking of BJJ translate to a high-stakes career as an attorney. Tony breaks down how the mental toughness, calm under pressure, and tactical chess match of high-level Jiu-Jitsu directly mirror the challenges he faces inside the courtroom and when managing complex legal cases. It is a powerful conversation about how the lessons learned through physical struggle can completely reshape your professional mindset and execution.Whether you are a dedicated BJJ practitioner looking for tips on combat sports longevity, a legal professional interested in career strategy, or just someone looking to build more discipline and focus in your daily life, this episode is packed with practical takeaways. Tune in to hear Tony's unique perspective on modern grappling, martial arts philosophy, and the ultimate grind of earning a black belt.Tony's Instagram: @johnstony

Kazuo Saito came to Australia nearly 50 years ago and started a karate dojo in Sydney. Now in his 80s, he continues to promote Japanese martial arts—including their spiritual aspects—alongside his son, Harrison. Harrison, who is in his 20s and was born and raised in Australia, admits to having had conflicts with his strict Japanese father, but now believes that he and his father complement one another. We spoke to both of them.
We love doing these homages to Master Kelljchian's thoughts and wisdom. This quote is directly related to weapon's dexterity. But, with Sensei Derek's help, we travel all over the place with it. (What else is new!). I'll tag 3 episodes here. First off we reviewed Master Kelljchian's book 365 Days of the Warrior in 2021. Here's a link:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/7049776Much of what we discuss relates back to self-defense. We've done a number of episodes about this subject. This one is from 2020, with Sensei Jay:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/3293584And finally, we do "letter" episodes and dexterity made the cut back in 2022 during a Letter D episode. (Of course!). They're fun to hear so listen here:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/11170566Each week we remind you that we have this link to support our work. Send us a message! Really! This week on the Get More Smarter Podcast, by the time you hear this the state legislature will be just hours away from adjourning sine die. But because we record on Fridays, you're going to have to wait a week to get the download of what passed, what failed, and what might get vetoed. Then, we dig into some 2026 updates as candidates for state level office report what they raised and spent in the last critical quarter before the primary election on June 30th. Next, even though Republicans have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the governor's race, that doesn't mean their primary is any less entertaining. We report from the cheap seats as the gloves come off for who has the privilege of losing to Phil Weiser or Michael Bennet this November, and we've got a few other down ballot updates for you as well. But first, she made the topline on the ballot through the Democratic caucus and assembly process and wants to be the one to run Colorado's gold-standard elections for the next four years after spending the last four years making Jeffco, home of the podcast, the best place to cast a ballot. Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder Amanda Gonzalez joins the pod to tell us why she wants to be promoted to the state's chief elections officer. That's it for this episode! If you loved watching and/or listening to it as much as we loved recording it, you can thank us by subscribing to the pod wherever you listen, following us over on New Old Twitter AKA Bluesky, subscribing to our shiny new channel on YouTube, smashing that subscribe button on our Substack, and sharing this episode with your friends, your enemies, and your 8th favorite Member of Congress from Colorado! Published 10 May 2026This week we bring in the super sub and chat to them so you can know what to expect. Bicey has plenty on, so the addition of a super sub we feel will make the show stronger. Our new super sub is right at the front of the pro fleet racing everything from Cape 31's to Ultim's. They also bring a strong Banter game. For us it was a no brainer who to offer the role to and thankfully they were super keen to become part of the team.#womenracingaus #finalfinalracing #disrupta_ #vaikobi #vaikobisail #radixnutrition #barkarate #sailingpodcast #barkarateconversations #worldsailingofficial #sailing #boat #ocean #sport #voile #sail #sea #offshore #sailors #sailingworld #extremesailing #foils #yacht #yachts #saillife #instayacht #sailingblog #instasail
